Doai but all the humans have isat craft types
Tumblr media
I'll make sure to do Alex and Mortimer later
Rambling time undercut
If you don't know the isat (aka in stars and time) craft type system basically it's the magic/battle system in the game where every character has a craft type, Rock, Paper and Scissors. I'm not sure if they are exactly born with them or it comes with time but it's an omnipotent thing that everyone can weild and learn, sometimes you can learn more than one craft, other crafts are also a thing apart from rock paper scissors one i can name is Body craft which can modify your body to your liking, the other two crafts are very spoiler territory for the games story.
All forms of craft are available to humans although I'm not sure if i want the Veldiguns to have them, either the crafts deal damage to them or are completely immune to them, I don't want them to be completely immune to the Craft attacks so I'll go with them only taking 6 damage per hit, unless it's a combo which is 16 dmg(which doesn't do alot to their health bar).
I see the veldiguns however having color, the game in general is set in a greyscale world plus it's in lore that color did used to exist(i think), thus making the veldigun more like anomolies by having a shade different from grey lmao. Although color seem to be an important but minor aspect in doai if Vol.1 is anything to go by in my head.
Not entirely sure where I'd be going with this without majorly spoiling the game, I just thought the whole Craft types thing is neat.

GUYSGUYSGUYS I STARTED THINKING ABOUT ALEX WILLIAMS’S UNNAMED FRIEND AND HAD A THOUGHT PROCESS
Okok, so, we know that Alex had a friend who was gotten by the Lankmann foundation and who gave Alex the tapes, but as of right now we don’t really know who that person could have been. I started thinking about that today, and although this theory isn’t really likely or really supported by canon, Consider:
What if Sean Grim was the friend?
Sean Grim, the skeptic from the Haunted Halloween PSA. This guy
Tumblr media
As of right now, he’s only showed up twice, once in this clip and once as a different take for this clip that was scrapped in In Loving Memory. But just bear with me here, hear me out.
First of all, he is one of three people who were interviewed in that video. The others were the owner of Grimmso’s, who was solely there to drive in how weird the robbery was, and Alex Williams, who was a witness to the Smiling Snatcher disappearances and ended up becoming Really Important to the story later on. Did his appearance there seem weird to anyone else on a rewatch, or is it just me?
Like, folks, his first appearance is questioning a news story and saying that nothing the news says should be fully trusted. That sounds like the kind of person who would see the Lankmann Foundation show up and go “hmmm, nope, I don’t trust that.” And then go looking for more information maybe?
Second thing, think about how Alex Williams was introduced in that first volume. They were just a side character who only showed up for less than a minute, and then ended up being the main character in Volume One. Add to it that, this might start sounding a bit “crazed theorist” over here, but consider the fact that Volume Zero isn’t just a single recording of a tv or from a camcorder or something mundane. This tape is described as probably being haunted, and shows off information that the general public weren’t supposed to know. Thinking about this leads to the idea that everything we’re shown in that tape is deliberate. Everything is important in some way.
So, Sean Grim hasn’t been mentioned yet since Volume One. I think that he is going to end up being just as important as Alex. I don’t have an idea of when he might show up again, but I have a feeling that he will, and considering Alex’s unnamed friend, I have a feeling that Sean could be him.
Now, my theory is very far from bulletproof. Sean literally shows up for less than a minute and all he’s doing is dismissing the weird break-in at Grimmso’s. In fact, there’s also a possibility that he could end up taking an antagonistic role in DOAI, maybe even being on the side of the Lankmann Foundation, as in In Loving Memory, we see Sean doing a different take of the clip he shows up in before being berated by the person filming for not selling the script enough. Paying someone to dismiss the idea of the veldigun does sound like something the Lankmann Foundation could do, as even if it’s before the foundation was created, Lankmann probably still would have enough sway to keep it quiet. It’s very much a possibility, just like the possibility that my hunch could be wrong and Sean could never show up again.
But I’m just. Idk, we don’t have a lot of information on where the lore could go, and Sean Grim not being knowingly involved in the plot yet, plus Alex’s friend being unnamed, it doesn’t feel like a coincidence to me. He has to be important in some way, so my theory as of now is that he is Alex Williams’ friend who found the archive and gave it to Alex before Lankmann got him.
Chat? What do we think about this idea?

mom says it’s my turn on the writing
It b̵͕͕̾̽́̍́̆͜u̷̾̀ͅr̷̛͓͂̅͝n̷̝̬͖̺͕̐̆͝ę̵͔̰̯̑͑̇̃̊̈d̶͚̲̟̹̣͛͑̊͘
Alex couldn’t suppress it anymore. Their transformation was almost complete, they knew it, and it hurt like hell.
Something was needed to complete the transformation, to make the burning stop. Something was missing, and they needed to find it.
They turned the corner, the long hallways of the asylum bathed in red from the alarm. They were dripping, their form still unstable. They looked around, only to see a caretaker standing on guard, gun in hand. Their mask obscured their expression, but Alex could feel the fear radiating off them.
Their pupils dilated. Their stomach growled. They couldn’t control themself anymore.
They l̶̼̜͛̇̕u̸̫͈͙̅̅̊̿͋n̷̻̤̩͒g̸͖̙͊̀̕ͅë̵̙͎͉͎͗d̴͕̯̘͙͂̊̎̚
They å̵̙̰̫̺̯̊b̷̧̠̳̦̠̒̔̌s̶̪̘͒̚o̴̳͚̲̰̮̞͑͐̅͘͘͝r̴̼͊͂̅̈́̆̾b̶͚͖͎̪̠̻́ę̵͓̰̭͔̐̃͜ḋ̴̬̕ ̶̝̯̟̘̭̾͝ͅ ̸̨̢̛̩͈̞̖̰̲̜̘͕̘̪̫͙̇̅
Welcome home little one
———————————————
Alex had been acting weird since the raid. Something was wrong, Clyde could tell. It assumed that transforming from a human into a velidgun was not easy, but this was different. They were being more distant, muttered to themself when they thought it was out of earshot.
It was concerned for its huma- Alex, it wanted to help, but it didn’t know what to do. At their core, Alex still thought and acted like a human, and Clyde had no clue how care like a human would. It was learning, but it still didn’t fully grasp the concept
It wanted to help, but it couldn’t.
It hated feeling helpless
———————————————
They could still hear the caretaker they absorbed. They knew his memories now, his thoughts and emotions, his life inside and out.
They couldn’t control themself, they had needed the burning to stop, and it did. It seemed like they had to absorb someone in order to complete their transformation, or else they would’ve been stuck in that in-between form.
That didn’t stop the guilt though.
His name was Sean Grimm. He was a senior in college, a couple years younger than Alex. He had been payed by the foundation to discredit the story about Clyde’s break in, Alex had remembered him on the news report that day, and was offered a job afterward. Lankmann needed people to do his dirty work, and Sean already had played into his hand.
Alex curled into themself, wings folded over their body like a feathery cocoon. They could still hear Sean’s voice in the back of their mind. He was confused and scared, and Alex couldn’t blame him. They couldn’t imagine what it was like, trapped in a body you couldn’t control, lurking in the back of some monster’s mind.
Alex didn’t regret what they did to Lankmann. If there was a hell, that bastard would be rotting there for the rest of eternity. But if they could go back, they would’ve absorbed him instead, just to stop the burning and not murder an innocent man.
Unfortunately, you already have, Willams
What was that?
Alex unfurled their wings in shock, whipping their head around in trying to find the source of the voice. It wasn’t Sean, he was still quiet in the back of their mind.
The voice was familiar in the worst way, identical to the doctor-
Oh
Alex sunk back to the floor, eyes wide.
You’re a fool if you thought you would’ve gotten rid of me that easily Willams
———————————————
“Alex?” Clyde had found Alex curled up next to the nest, wings covering their face. It sat down next to its partner, and Alex lowered their wings.
“Is something wrong?” Clyde asked, and Alex buried their face in their hands. Clyde flinched, they only did that when they were upset. Clyde leaned closer to it’s partner, curling its tail around them in an attempt to comfort them.
“I killed someone” Alex whispered to themself. Clyde tried to buried the confusion it felt “he deserves it, he was hurting people, you better than anyone know thi-“
“No, not him” Alex said abruptly “I mean, I did kill him, but I don’t regret it. He had to die, and if I didn’t you’ve would’ve, and I don’t know it would’ve effected you if you had absorbed him”
Clyde gritted its teeth, not letting its thoughts stray there. Alex took a deep breath, and continued “During the raid on the asylum, before I completed my transformation, there was this, burning that I felt. It was like the worst fever I had ever had, and I needed to make it stop.”
They took another breath, shifting uncomfortably. “I saw a caretaker, but he hadn’t noticed me. I knew he could stop the burning so I-“ they cut themself off abruptly, burning their face back into their hands.
Clyde didn’t know how to respond. This was natural for velidgun. They were predators, and now Alex was to. But Clyde could understand why Alex was so distressed. They used to be human, they weren’t anymore but they still thought like one.
“I killed someone” they repeated, the words sharper this time “He’s dead because of me, because I couldn’t-“
Clyde pulled them into a hug, cutting them off. “You did what you had to” it said.
Alex blinked a couple times, before wrapping their arms around Clyde in return.
They could figure this out together.

yippee here's the second part of this!
here's the rules from last time
this includes some OCs that I have not revealed yet
this also includes scenarios from the DOAI sitcom au
this also includes ocs from my dear friend @mapalssyrup's au, Bleeding From Every Orifice (‼️which I do not own‼️)
the memes from said AU will be labeled with BFEO and the ones from the sitcom au will be labeled, well, sitcom au
when someone is labeled "Mortimer Gray", it was mortimer when he was human, and when it's just "Mortiemer", that's when he's veldigunified(tm)
same applies for Alex

What was the fucking PLAN here, now that they've split the Circle and sent two people off alone into two different places
In the event that, say, one of those two people found the fucking monster, what was the plan. What were they going to do about that.

Draw near, allies, for these are dark days for “kink-shaming”. At best, this is one of the whiniest, most pathetic and least helpful phrases to have entered the parlance of modern times – and at worst, it’s just another guy’s excuse for sexual abuse. It’s confusing. You try to be modern and post-conventional, and you end up enabling the most old-fashioned and conventional nastinesses of all.
Still, thank heavens for the parade of embattled famous men fighting kink-shaming’s corner. I have just one thing to say to all the lady authors, lady pop stars and lady actors out there. And that is: if you haven’t had an eye-wateringly expensive lawyer draft a statement about how consensual your sex with a tormented junior was, then are you really properly creative at all?
Fighting out of a Brooklyn detention centre, we have the rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is on remand facing sex trafficking charges and about 120 lawsuits alleging drugging and sexual abuse, including of teenagers and minors. He denies the charges, some of which relate to his so-called freak-off parties. This week, Diddy’s lawyer’s take on the multiple federal charges was that the US government was trying “to police non-conforming sexual activity”. “The prosecution of Mr Combs is both sexist,” this lawyer hazarded, “and puritanical.” Righto.
Elsewhere, we have actor and oil scion Armie Hammer, #MeTooed back in the day over a number of sexual abuse and coercion allegations, plus a little light cannibalism talk – which he says was like being “left standing there naked in front of the world with all of your proclivities or kinks being judged by the world”. Despite police reports, no charges were brought, and Armie now observes of his downfall that “people were my bags of dope with skin on it”. Ah, ye olde sex addict, hoovering up his chosen substance – women – that just happens to have “skin on it”.
Meanwhile, Channel 4 is currently showing a documentary on the rock star Marilyn Manson, who has successfully ridden out years of grim abuse allegations, including by his much younger former partner, Evan Rachel Wood. The documentary contains some previously unaired interview footage, in which Manson declares: “I’m not into rape whatsoever … I prefer to break a woman down to the point where they have no choice but to submit to me. Rape is for cowards, for lazy people.” Certainly for other people.
But arguably the newsiest one this week concerns the author Neil Gaiman, subject of what might have been last summer’s dam-breaking Tortoise podcast, Master. Except, there are some dams that people – and fandoms – are hugely invested in keeping intact. It has taken till now for the follow-up, courtesy of New York Magazine, in the form of an investigation entitled There Is No Safe Word, which features eight young women alleging sexual assault, coercion and misconduct by Gaiman, six of them on the record.
Gaiman denies anything was non-consensual, and says that the claims contain “descriptions of things that happened sitting beside things that emphatically did not happen”. He has remained largely hidden behind lawyers since the allegations surfaced last year, with one of these legal eagles telling Tortoise that “sexual degradation, bondage, domination, sadism, and masochism may not be to everyone’s taste, but between consenting adults, BDSM is lawful”. Was boundaried BDSM what was going on? The alleged victims say no, and they say it at complex length in the New York investigation.
Take the story told by Scarlett Pavlovich. Even unconventional people end up needing conventional things such as childcare, which Gaiman and his ex-wife Amanda Palmer seem to have decided was best obtained by asking women who were also fans. Aged 24, Pavlovich has arrived for her first day of work at Gaiman’s – he is 61 – to discover the child is in fact on a playdate. She has only known the author for a couple of hours when he suggests she takes a bath in his outdoor tub while he’s on a work call. Minutes after, he appears naked, and joins her, swiftly beginning to stroke her feet. According to the New York Magazine report, she tells him “she was gay, she’d never had sex, she had been sexually abused by a 45-year-old man when she was 15. Gaiman continued to press.” Indeed, he does so to the point of anal penetration. “Then he asked if he could come on my face, and I said ‘no’ but he did anyway. He said, ‘Call me “master”, and I’ll come.’ He said, ‘Be a good girl. You’re a good little girl.’” She goes home to Google #MeToo and Neil Gaiman. Yet in time, she also goes back to Gaiman and Palmer’s houses. And months later, a vulnerable young adult without a home and estranged from her own family, she is still stuck in this toxic cycle. And has still never been paid for all thechildcare.
In our era, people have righteously debunked the myth of the perfect victim – but less so the myth of the perfect perpetrator. The perfect perpetrator is an evil stranger – yet sexual abuse is overwhelmingly likely to be carried out by someone you know, who you may be related to or in a relationship with, and who is pretty nice to you some of the time. These are complex and inconvenient truths, but they are truths.
Furthermore, there are perfect perpetrators in the public imagination. Harvey Weinstein, once he was exposed, was the perfect perpetrator. Physically repulsive – hey, it is what it is – and not actually famous in the world outside his professional community, he was the kind of 2D scumbag no civilian could possibly be invested in. People in the normal world will always be incalculably more relaxed about the exposure of a movie producer, a job they instinctively regard as commoditised, than they will be about losing any kind of artist, a job whose works have affected them over the course of many years. Perhaps this is why many fans of the master storyteller Neil Gaiman are refusing to listen to the less appealing, less magical accounts of those women who allege he took advantage of them.
As for Neil himself, I see Gaiman still can’t let go of the allyship argot, which frequently feels performative and knackered, but in the circumstances of this case comes off as actively ludicrous. Finally breaking the silence on Thursday, Gaiman said that he hadn’t commented thus far on the multiple, months-long stream of allegations, some of which he had allegedly sought to silence via NDAs, “out of respect for the people that were sharing their stories”.
Sharing their stories, if you please! Neil: some of them have “shared their stories” with Auckland and Devon and Cornwall police. Are you attempting to be an “ally” to your own alleged victims? Either way, great to find you holding space/checking your privilege for them. You’ll note that people like Neil even react to sexual abuse allegations in a superior way. Honestly, I’m feeling somewhat lesser, here. I’ve literally never given $60,000 or $275,000 to people I haven’t sexually assaulted so that I can – hang on, let me get my reading glasses on – help them get therapy/“make up some of the damage”. Having said that, I have always paid my nanny via PAYE, and have never attempted to have sex with her. I recommend it.

Also the thing with Molly is that she is Irish. Her family, all she had known, is back in Dublin. She doesn’t have anyone to turn to, while the girls at least have eachother.
Also, it is said she came from a rich Dublin family. Molly probable would not have many transferable skills and was used to people doing things for her.
Even Sean dislikes her — her being from Dublin and rich isolates her from the only fellow countryman in the camp. He even calls her a ‘west Briton’, a derogatory term for people from Dublin.
Although I have to say whether by accident or not Molly really is the quintessential tragic Irish woman. Irish literature is often quite grim. She is almost like a love letter to that tragedy. Idk. I got a lot to say about Molly.
Absolutely. Molly has no one outside of the gang, the gang is why she is fed, why she has a roof over her head, why she have money to do literally anything. They give her all the practical stuff, but she has nothing social, she is an outcast socially but she also cannot leave becauseshe sacrified everything for them, she cannot go back to her family, she has no friends and she cannot survive on her own. She can stay and have all the practical but feel miserable, or leave and have nothing.
And idk who you are, but if you wanna talk about Molly my dms are open!! Idk a lot about her in dept but i would love to listen :D

My doctor just told me that I need to read more flashback scenes of baby bradshaw and bbf Jake or I’ll die. Normally I’d get a second opinion but I think he’s right.
Hahaha that's a very grim diagnosis. Good thing I've got just the cure!
Here's a prom flashback for ya!

Brother's Best Friend - Prom
Jake Seresin x Reader
“You’re going,” Jake says firmly, placing his hands on his hips because he means business. He's standing in the doorway to your bedroom.
“I’m not going,” you respond stubbornly, turning away from him. Your boyfriend dumped you two days before prom night and there is no way you’re going to attend now.
“Don’t give him the satisfaction of thinking he broke you,” Jake continues in the exact same, resolute tone.
“He did break me.” You sigh with a sniffle and swivel back in your desk chair to face Jake.
Jake looks at you with a small grin. “No way,” he says. “You’re unbreakable.”
You snort, wiping your eyes. “Stop,” you demand, even though he has made you smile.
“You already have a dress,” Jake persists, strolling into your bedroom and pulling your beautiful gown out of the closet.
“I don’t have a date,” you grumble.
“So?”
“So, it’s embarrassing! Sean’s already got a new girlfriend!”
Jake cringes. “Sean’s a loser.”
“I’m a loser!”
Jake sighs, setting your dress down onto the bed, and walks over to where you’re sitting. He crouches down before you, placing his hands on the arms of your chair, and looks up, trying to catch your gaze. “There is no way in hell you actually believe that,” he says.
You glance down at him, your heart racing because Jake Seresin has never ever been this close to you before. You’d almost forgotten how much you used to crush on him back in the day and, now that you’re staring unblinkingly into his eyes, you’re right back to being the silly little sister who’s infatuated with her brother’s best friend.
“You are by far the coolest person I know,” Jake continues. “And that includes your brother, by the way.”
You chuckle self-consciously and lower your gaze. “Too bad Sean doesn’t think so.”
“Sean is an idiot,” Jake retorts.
You smile. “A loser and an idiot,” you say. “Didn’t realize you thought so highly of him.”
Jake gives you a wry look. “He’s lucky I don’t kick his ass.”
You roll your eyes and laugh. “Jake, I don’t want to go, truly. I’m not sad about it.”
“You will be. Someday.”
You let out a frustrated sigh. “My friends aren’t going.”
“So?”
“So, the only reason I agreed to go was because Sean wanted to. I don’t want to go alone.” You cringe just thinking about it.
Jake purses his lips, gazing into your eyes. “I’ll go with you,” he says decisively.

Franklin Part 1.
Tumblr media
You look around the crowd of people, slightly overwhelmed by the turn out at the fair today. It was a Saturday night after all anyone who wanted to enjoy an ounce of fun weekend before work/school on Monday was here. Unfortunately for you crowds weren’t your thing since a fight tended to break out and nowadays a gun would be pulled quickly.
“Damn! he walks like his dick is heavy” you hear
You start coughing choking on your cola
“What?!!” Wanda comments
“She must be talking about Franklin”  Lashay adds as you all now looked towards where she looked, Franklin’s crew walked towards them mostly because of Leon but still they made their way towards you
There’s a light laughter between you girls “Girl you crazy!” your best friend who just happens to be your cousin Harmony adds to the discussion
“Oh shit they coming this way yall straighten up!” Tasha snaps quickly adjusting herself clothes
You groan internally you didn’t want to deal with Franklin and his men. You were around them from elementary to now, and right now mentioning Franklin and his men was like mentioning the grim reaper and his minions. After Kevin's death and Franklin’s release, it was like they were untouchable, and anyone who crossed them ended up dead. Franklin didn’t have that innocent aura about him anymore, you couldn’t describe it he was different confident
“Ladies!” Mike Mike greets bowing his head
“Hey y'all” Lashay greets
“What y'all doing here?” Leon asks
“We are at the state fair duh we are here to get some drinks food and have fun” Wanda responds
“The questioning is what are y'all doing here?” Harmony asks
“Shit y'all can’t be the only ones having fun!” Jerome comments
You hang back as the group merges and moves through the fair. You would integrate, often joining the discussion, but for the most part you kinda just chilled in the back and watched as the couples (Tasha/Franklin, Wanda/Leon, Harmony/Sean Louie/Jerome) cupcaked while the rest of you walked at a distance from them.
“Girl Sean talking about making me his girl” Harmony comments as you two finally made it back to your rented out home
“Oh nice!” you say removing your shoes
“You had fun tonight?”
“Yea!” you smile
“Good see it was fun” she says in a “i told you so” mocking tone
“Yea yea whatever!” you wave her off before retreating to the kitchen. You two spend the night conversing before heading off to sleep.
Life goes on and not much can be said about trying to survive and make it in a world that wouldn’t allow you to.
“No,” you look at your cousin with a dead face
“WHYYY GIRL? COMME ONNNN” she begs
“Why do I” you point to your chest, “need to go? Tasha, Lashay, Bri, CiCi they are all going”
“Because cousin, it's a christmas/new years party, damn you wanna be the only bitch in south central staying home on new years eve??”
“You know i don’t like crowds” you argue “and you know damn well that house is about to be packed”
“When will you get to experience partying at a drug lords house again?” she counters
“I would hope never Harmony”
She fake cries “come on girl pleaaassseee” she begs as she hugs you
“Harmony”
“Franklin said bring all your friends you know I cant show up without you”
“Why not?”
“Because you are part of the package”
“Just go with the girls” should
She turns you to face her “Y/N! why don’t you want to come?”
You sigh “i already told you!”
She gives you a light push “Fine, be boring, have no social life, have no love life, just  survive, Work, school, home, bills thats it???” She throws her hands up when you give her a blanks stare in return
You roll your eyes as she walks away. What she said got to you eventually, you didn’t want to only survive, you wanted to live just not around Saint and his men, it's like a body dropped every time he was around.
You ponder for a few days before approaching her, what could hurt a one time party never to be mentioned again at least you could counter if she ever asked you to leave again.
“Whats the dress code?” you ask as you stand by the kitchen counter
“What?” She asks as she mixes the rice on the stove
“For this party” you clarify
She turns to you with a stunned face, mouth a jar wide grin quickly taking over, “you coming?!!!” she asks softly, when you nod she screams and throws her arms around you “OH MY GOD!!!! AHHHH! YES GIRLLLL YESSSS WHAT MADE YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND?”
“Okay calm down!”
“Sorry” she takes a deep breath “I’m just soo excited”
“Yea yea whats the dress code i mean can i show up in jeans or?”
“Jeans girl really?” you shrug “You can or you can get a nice pretty dress stand out, get your hair done, nails?”
“So dress up is the dress code?”
She shrugged “he never said just you know dress nice”
“I can dress nice in jeans”
“In a dress!” she stresses
“Fine” you weren’t going to argue your way through this party
“Ooh girl, I can't wait to go shopping, let me call the girls and then we can plan to go out together!” she comments before returning to the stove.  You groan already regretting agreeing to go to this party.
The night of the party approaches quickly and you feel your stomach doing flips, it was too late to tell Harmony you changed your mind, you two were looking for a parking spot in the neighborhood, it seemed like half of south central had already showed up to the party.
You don’t even know how time flew by so quickly, one minute you're in the chair getting your hair done, next thing you're putting on your lipstick, perfume, shoes, now walking towards the door. Watching as people poured in and out of the party.
The chilly LA evening weather was much appreciated as you were not trying to arrive at the house with a thin layer of sweat on your body. Not after you've primped and primed the entire day.
“HEEEEYYYYY!”  Harmony greets as you two walk in
“MY BABY IS HERE!” Sean yells on top of his lungs
You stand back as you watch them greet
“Y/N?” you hear your name
You turn to face one of Franklin's men “I’ll take your coat”
“Oh you shrug off your trench coat.”
“I missed you baby” you hear harmony whine in a baby voice you can’t help but laugh
The house was sorta full, you could still see across the room and make faces you knew that wouldn't be the case in the next hour or so. You just know the party was bound to get shut down
You step further in securing the coat check in your clutch.
“Hey”  you greet Franklin
“Glad you could make it Y/N” he greets giving you a half hug, you quickly inhale his cologne he smelled good you make a quick note to yourself
“Thanks for the invite, we brought you this” you say handing him a gift bag
“Oh shit you didn’t have to” he smiles at you
You shrug “well my mama said never show up to a person's house empty handed you know”
He nods “what yall get me?” He asks trying to move the tissue paper around
“Oh uh really good wine”
“Expensive wine”  Harmony adds
“And some Bourbon”
“Expensive bourbon”
“Okay Harmony!” you look at her incredulously causing Franklin to chuckle
She chuckles “I’m fucking with you girl but”  she turns to face Franklin, “my cousin went around turn looking for the best wine for you”
“Oh word?” he turns to face you a bright smile on his face
You feel yourself getting flustered “No I just” you feel yourself blushing “It's a gift and I  like to give good gifts” you defend, you don’t even know why you were blushing
“That's true you ever want a good gift you ask her she’ll find some good shit”
You smile “I’m gonna say hi to the girls and boys”  you say walking away from them
“Awkward ass” Harmony comments causing Franklin and Sean to burst out laughing. You throw your middle finger at her and keep walking
It wasn’t that you were purposely trying to impress Franklin, it was just a gift. What would it look like showing up with cheap wine and liquor when you kept hearing about the thousands he was moving weekly. He would probably be offended, you heard about his temper.
1 hour you say to yourself as you made your way around the room, thats it thats how long you were staying 1 hour. You eventually find a small group of girls to talk to, avoiding Harmony and the rest as they were either in the circle with Franklin or right near it, in the center of the house. When you turn to look at that area you catch a glimpse of Tasha on Franklin's lap, with a flash she gets up and other women take a seat on his lap, you shake your head internally before returning to the conversation.
The next time you look down at your watch you realise 2 hours had passed. It was already past 11pm and you should have been home by now.
You quickly chug the water you have been drinking, (you weren’t gonna take risks drinking and driving) you slowly push your way through the massive crowd avoiding anyone from that group spotting you. Unbeknownst to you Franklin had his eye on you the entire night. He watched as you stood in the corner and talked to the girls, then back to the kitchen, bathroom, he even saw you spill water on yourself, he smiled slightly before returning to his conversation, no matter where you were tonight he made sure his eyes were on you.
At one point you two make eye contact but you smile and quickly look away. Plus the comment Harmony made awhile back about him looking at you a certain way had you nervous being around the man, you can’t explain it you just wanted to get out of South Central unscathed and gaining the attention of Franklin wasn’t a plan.
“Yea I’m leaving,”  you chuckle nervously while handing them the coat check
“Damn before New Years? it's gonna happen in like 40 minutes”
“I know but I kinda wanna start getting home before traffic you know” you explain
You already knew Harmony was gonna be with Sean tonight at his place you begged her to go to his instead of ruining your night with their sexcapeds gladly for you she agreed
He nodded in response “Yea that makes sense, LA traffic can get crazy”
“Yea it can” You open your clutch to pull your keys but find nothing, you frantically push things around to see nothing, your lip gloss, napkins, mints and your wallet
“Shit” you say to yourself as you think back to the night? Did you leave them in the car? Are they with Harmony? Did they drop and you didn’t hear them? Your mind races trying to trace back the night.
“Here you go” he says handing you your coat
“Thanks”
“Leaving so soon?”  you hear close to your ear from behind you,
You instinctively tilt your head away, “Huh?”  as you continue to check the pockets quickly turning around slowly
You release your breath as you feel the keys in your coat pocket, you look up and see Franklin looking down at you smiling
“FUCK!”  you curse internally  “Heyyy” you smile quickly turning to glance at where he was to see if anyone else noticed. It was so packed now you couldn’t see past the sea of bodies now
“Leaving so soon?” he asks again pulling his hands behind his back
You giggle nervously “Oh yea I don’t wanna get stuck in LA traffic”
He tilts his head slightly confused “But you just got here”
“No i got here 2 hours ago”
“I didn’t even get the chance to talk to you tonight” You make a face, he chuckles in response “I’m saying i wanted to catch up with you” he shrugs “we ain't really talked since highschool”
“Oh” you shrug “nothing much going on with me”
He smirks “Nah you more interesting than that, I aint even get the chance to tell you look good tonight yet,” You look down at your semi formal sweetheart dress, you were actually glad you agreed to dress up as many women were and you didn't’ want to be the odd one out actually even Franklin was dressed up suit tie the whole shebang
“Oh” you smile “thank you Franklin, you look good too clean up nice”
He removes the coat from your hands gently “how about you stay a little longer?” he bargains
You chuckle nervously this could not be happening “Noo” you reach for the jacket but he puts it behind his back. “Franklin!”  you scold
He smiles looking at you “comeon girl you can’t leave right before new years!” he argues
“I don’t like driving at night. You know how the cops are? And its new years too!?” You catch his eyes drifting lower to your cleavage before making their way up to yours. You use that to your advantage and reach around but he quickly moves the jacket the opposite way
“Franklin!” you look towards where he was seating in the center of the house and see a very ugly mug on Tasha’s face and the other women seemed to share the same sentiment glaring in your direction
“Come on its" he looks down at his watch, "only 30 more minutes, that can’t hurt”
“No! Plus looks like Tasha is gonna kill you” you comment
“Tasha?”  he looks at where you tilted your head
“Oh shit!” he laughs “I don’t care about Tee”
You cross your arms on your chest “Aren't you two dating?”
“No!”
“Mmmm well you might not be but she believes you two are and I need my coat Franklin” you open your hand out for him to give it to you
“I’ll take you home”
“No how are you gonna get back here plus it's your party don’t be ridiculous!”
“RIdiculous?” He guffaws  “I'm not the one leaving a new years party 30 minutes before new years that's the point of the party!”
You huff and look up at the ceiling. You need to find a solution. You would leave the coat but it has your keys! He moves closer smiling at how flustered you were getting (“I just wanna go home”) you think to yourself, this shouldn’t be happening he should be dating Tasha. Why isn’t he? Weren't they over each other at the fair and tonight? What was this some freakyshit they were into or what?
“What is it?” He asks softly bringing your attention back to him, that damn smile, those dimples, nope no Y/N you need to go home
“Franklin I would like to go home please”
“Y/N I told you I’ll take you home”
“What about Tee?”
“Tee can get a ride home, why you keep brining her up?”
“Franklin”
“I’ll take you home. I promise”
“When?”
“Right after the celebration is over!” he smiles slyly
You frown “No thats like at 6am!”
He chuckles you caught on quick “No give me till 1am at least”
You contemplate no way you were getting the coat back that was for sure
“Fine you promise?”
“I promise ima get Dreads or Mikey to take you”  You scoff “what?”
You  reach around and snatch your coat shocking him in the process
“No you said you were gonna take me home so you needed to take me home not punt me off to your men” you complain as you throw on your coat quickly
He smiles at your brattiness “okay okay i will” he reaches for you
You move away from him “Nope i’m going home goodnight Franklin!”
He sighs, “can you at least let me know you made it home safe?”
“Fine i’ll page Tee”
He  groans and you chuckle, he bites his bottom lip as he watches you walk away defiantly

I made a list of all the DoaI characters we know of so far and any information on them that might be relevant, use this for theory-crafting (and correct me if you think there’s anything I should add):
Dreams of an Insomniac - Characters
Volume 0 - Haunted Halloween PSA
Tommy Merrick
Overarching story’s protagonist
Visiting old family home, vaguely recognises the things on the tapes and even knows a Veldigun (possibly either Winfrey or Simon) personally
Has to do something in Lankmann’s Asylum (post-collapse)
Owen Grady
Reporter who wrote the OG Bizzare Break-In article
Rick Graham
Owner of Grimmso’s
Sean Grim
Listed as “Sceptical Civillian” in Volume 0, but his segment of the report was shown to be scripted in In Loving Memory
“To think they said our small-town representative was corrupt…” <- possibly Lankmann?
(see Volume 1 segment for Alex Williams)
Officer Kenneth Krueger
Father of Klaus Krueger
Attacked by Clyde in 1986/7(?), became riddled with Veldigun cooties, and was experimented on by Lankmann until his death in 1996
Death was faked in 1987, claiming he had hung himself in his son’s closet (complete with a forged suicide note, which may possibly be a real note twisted to look like one due to the heavy distortion and blurring of the final paragraph?)
Mortimer Grey
In-house animator for the Lankmann Foundation
Most famous for work on cartoon series Candy Mouse
Possibly riddled with Veldigun cooties?
Mr. Wilson
Father of Sam Wilson, one of the children “eaten” by Clyde on Halloween ‘86
Got “eaten” by Clyde the following January
Wife still alive by the time Family Photo Album takes place, or at least wasn’t “eaten” by Clyde
Clyde, or “The Smiling Snatcher”
The first(?) Veldigun to make itself known in Eastridge County
“Infant” (by Veldigun standards) during the events of Halloween ‘86
Used to hunt children, now has a preference for adults
Uses taunting and psychological manipulation to get to its victims
Can wear the skin of its victims, though wether this is literal or just an extension of its hallucinations is unknown
Volume 1 - Foundation Archives
Alex Williams
Lives on 66 Elk Crescent
Partial witness to Halloween ‘86, was interviewed by ECN shortly afterwards on the same night(?)
Was put under “witness protection” by the Lankmann Foundation, borderline forced to join the asylum shortly after its founding
Going to meeting with someone “very dangerous” after the events of the recording of Volume 1
Someone that they care about has been “hurt” by the Lankmann Foundation, in a mysterious incident that will probably be touched on in the mini-volumes
Doctor Herbert Lankmann
Founded the Lankmann Foundation in 1990(?) with money inherited from his late father (who he probably murdered)
Pays the police to hide all the unethical things he does
Has mechanical hands and screens fitted into/replacing his eyes (likely a more accurate and trustworthy version of the goggles?)
Became more aggressive, alongside the Caretakers, after an unknown “incident” (likely the aforementioned one that hurt one of Alex’s friends)
Patient 66
Lived on 45 Elk Crescent
Abducted from her home by the Caretakers for unknown reasons
Described as “about in her 30s” by Alex, shows no obvious sign of mental illness and is physically fine
Went into Room 66, encountered Winfrey and didn’t die???? (the first time at least)
Probably died the second time (and got her voice stolen)
The Caretakers
Silent, stoic henchmen of Lankmann
Wear masks and goggles at all times
Winfrey, or “Specimen 02”
14-foot tall Veldigun, kept within Room 66 in the Lankmann Foundation
Auditory hallucinations come in the form of distant music, the knocking of doors and windows, the voices of people who aren’t actually there, etc
Took the voice of (and probably killed) Patient 66 the second time it encountered her
All things in mind might actually be pretty passive for a Veldigun? (didn’t kill Alex when they first entered either)

Willow Reviews: Creature Commandos - Season 1
Tumblr media
While many were initially surprised and confused at the announcement that the rebooted cinematic DCU would begin with an animated series about the Creature Commandos prior to the more expected Superman film, I was nothing short of thrilled. I knew nothing of the team outside of its base concept, having only experienced the original incarnation of the Commandos via the DC Showcase: Sgt. Rock animated short. But the Universal Monsters were a staple of my childhood and James Gunn's whacky and raunchy but emotionally sincere style makes him my most trusted comic book filmmaker. So I was more than ready for a 7-episode animated series that promised to be “Suicide Squad but with monsters”. What I wasn't ready for was the ultimate culmination of all of Gunn's previous work with comic book characters and my personal favorite piece of DC animation since Batman: The Animated Series, only kept from being its equal in my eyes by one significant flaw that I hope future seasons address.
The Characters
Without a shadow of a doubt, what makes Creature Commandos work so brilliantly is the characters. The character work on display here is James Gunn's finest outside his take on Rocket Raccoon for the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, with some already rivaling Rocket with just this first season and having the potential to surpass him if future seasons and concluded character arcs prove effective and strongly-written enough. Were it not for one particularly disappointing misfire, this would be the James Gunn superhero cast I consider perfect.
The strongest characters are thankfully the five titular Creature Commandos. Everything that works about Gunn's takes on the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Suicide Squad is on full display here with no weak links. The Bride especially stands out as a haunted and cold-hearted badass who borrows much more from Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones and Clint Eastwood’s Man with No Name than the four-armed alien-abducted incarnation of her seen in Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers run. Her brilliant backstory melds the best Frankenstein elements from Mary Shelley's novel and James Whale's films together, and coupled with Indira Varma's vocal performance made this my definitive take on the “Bride of Frankenstein” character concept across all of fiction. G.I. Robot fares just as well, with Sean Gunn's adorably whimsical performance turning what could have been an annoying one-note character into a lovable presence that lightens up an otherwise grim and cynical story whenever he is on screen.
Sean's additional character Weasel, returning from the previous DCEU canon, is held back from being quite as strong a character as the others by his inability to verbalize and thus became the pick for least favorite of the Commandos. However, he remains an endearing and weirdly cute comic relief layered by a heart-wrenching backstory that completely recontextualizes how he was presented in The Suicide Squad. Though I'll admit, I was able to predict it six months in advance when watching the teaser trailer. Ultimately however, Weasel being my least favorite is like being forced to rank my favorite ice cream flavors; they're all great, but someone HAS to be at the bottom. Zoë Chao's Nina Mazursky has similar setbacks initially, but only from how long it takes to learn anything about her beyond being the token nice character in this ensemble of monstrous killers and supervillains. In this sense she can at times feel like a copy-and-paste of Pom Klementieff's Mantis from Gunn's latter two Guardians of the Galaxy films and the holiday special. But her interactions with G.I. and especially the Bride keep her from ever becoming boring, and the similarities to Mantis just mean that she is effortlessly adorable and endearing while you wait for the narrative to give the answers to your questions about her. And said answers being given when they do works to make finally learning what brought her to Belle Reve and Task Force M all the more tragic.
On the other side of the coin, a character who is immediately a blast to experience before you dig under the layers is Alan Tudyk’s Doctor Phosphorus (Tudyk also provides his voice to Dr. Will Magnus in G.I.’s flashbacks and does Clayface's wicked chuckles in the main plot). His sarcastic delivery of every breath he takes, near-total nihilism with a hidden soft side, and his being the center of the show's best action scenes make for such an instantly hilarious, badass, and fascinating character that if it weren't for the Bride, he would be at the center of my fandom brainrot toward this show.
The supporting cast does its job well enough, with Viola Davis and Steve Agee doing what they did best in their returning DCEU roles of Amanda Waller and John “Dye-Beard” Economos, respectively. But the real standout is Frank Grillo, a welcome addition as Rick Flag Sr., the father of Joel Kinnaman’s Flag Jr. who was last seen in previous canon's The Suicide Squad. He has a surprisingly friendlier tone with the Commandos than his son had with the Squad, and this makes for an interesting change of pace when he’s alongside them. It's unfortunate the plot decides to brush him aside in the latter half, seemingly just to prepare him for whatever roles he will play in Superman and the second season of Peacemaker. At the same time, it allows for the Bride's elevation to team leader that sparks what will clearly be her series-long arc of eventually letting her walls down and opening herself up to literally any form of relationship or attachment. So I suppose I can let it slide, even if I did enjoy Flag Sr.'s presence as the token human and want him to stick around.
But despite a magnum opus’s worth of protagonists and a solid supporting cast, this season’s ensemble does noticeably suffer in one place, and that is in its trio of antagonists. Initial big bad Circe is a fun and flashy menace for the first three episodes, but disappears from the narrative altogether after episode 4. And with so little of how she's written having anything to do with how DC depicts Circe anywhere else, it makes you wonder (ha ha) why one of Wonder Woman's greatest villains was used at all. It might as well have been a one-off original character for how disposable and non-Circe she is. The ultimate antagonist, who will not be spoiled here, is afflicted with what I call “Prince Hans Syndrome”. There are almost no clues to their true nature until it is revealed toward the end of the season and thus we have little time to know and appreciate them as a villain. But at the same time, their impact is harrowing and undeniable once their villainy goes mask-off. Their actions are bound to forever haunt the show.
But most frustrating of all is David Harbour's Eric Frankenstein, a well-acted but often annoying case of missed opportunity and wasted potential. I admittedly feel this way partially due to my personal life experiences and how strongly I identified with the Bride and her story. Being a transgender woman who was raised by an emotionally immature father with temper problems, and who has also been a victim of stalking and harassment, I was all too familiar with the experience of Bride being told she is meant to be a certain something when that is not the life she wants for herself and having to constantly be on the run after Eric asserts his sense of entitlement to her and her “purpose”.
What Eric did to the Bride in those flashbacks and the subsequent threat he poses to her struck me personally as an ultimate irredeemable evil that perfectly embodied the horror of modern misogyny and incel behavior. Keeping with my comparisons of the Bride to Jessica Jones, I felt he was effectively set up to be a more childish and brutal answer to David Tennant’s Kilgrave. So I could not help feeling frustrated and a little insulted when he reappears in the modern day plotline with his sinister vibes from episode 2 mostly gone in favor of dopey delusions of undying romance that reminds one of Pepé Le Pew. These more comedic moments are much too frequent and at times seem like they're actively trying to undermine the inherent horror of the character.
I think perhaps this attempt to have it both ways with Eric being hilarious and horrifying could have been more effective if he was a more present threat to the Commandos and fought them to get to the Bride on a regular basis over the course of the story. Instead he is given his own mostly-solo side quest and only interacts with the Commandos for, and I don't think this is inaccurate, less than one second before he is instantly removed from the narrative altogether. I hope future seasons and storylines place him more actively in conflict with the Bride and the Commandos, because what season 1 goes for does not work and made me hope he is never seen or even mentioned again.
But even with all those frustrations in the villains and especially Eric, Creature Commandos bears a strong enough main cast that they just barely deter the overall quality of the season. Were it not for the extremely adult nature of this series, I could see the Commandos becoming a staple of goth childhoods worldwide. I hope DC editorial takes note of the reaction to these characters and brings the Commandos back into the current post-Rebirth comics continuity with more or less the same roster as this show, because they're just that pitch perfect a group. So long as the writers make sure to give them better villains, that is.
The Story
Reminiscent of shows like Lost, Once Upon a Time, and Arrow, Creature Commandos splits its episode lengths evenly between the actual plot and episode-specific flashback stories that for the most part reveal a certain monster's origin and what brought them to Waller's custody in Belle Reve Penitentiary. After the first episode that's entirely main plot setup, it's made easy to identify the remaining six by who their flashbacks are dedicated to; “the Bride one”, “the Weasel one”, etc. It would take too long to review each episode one by one so I will specifically talk about my picks for the best and worst of the bunch. But for the sake of satisfying curiosity I would rank my preference from best to worst as: 3, 2, 6, 7 and 4 tied, then 1, and finally 5. Ironically, almost identical to how I rank their central monsters as well.
Episode 3, the one centered on G.I. Robot, is a brilliant metaphor for veterans who lose their sense of purpose after being relieved of duty. It is not difficult to count it among my favorite episodes of animated television and just needs to be experienced. 2, as I mentioned when talking about the Bride's character, contains an exceptional alternative take on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel, exploring a What If…?- like scenario where Victor Frankenstein fully gave in to the creature's blackmail and actually completed the construction of a female counterpart. It becomes a heartbreaking story of a woman born from male entitlement, and her life on the run in an endless search for identity beyond her “purpose”. Episode 5 on the other hand, while far from bad contains a flashback story for Eric Frankenstein that doesn't tell us anything we don't already know or could infer about the character from what we had seen before, ultimately feeling redundant and like a waste of time. Combined with the least amount of main plot progression in the series, this episode was the one and only time I asked myself “That's it?” once the credits rolled.
The big picture plot ultimately amounts to an amalgamation of both DCEU Suicide Squad films with a coat of monster-colored paint. It feels appropriate however because unlike the comics' Project M army squad from WWII or modern day S.H.A.D.E. agents, Gunn's Commandos are quite literally an in-canon Suicide Squad replacement. After events nearly identical to what we saw in The Suicide Squad and season 1 of Peacemaker (but not close enough for those to count as official canon), Congress has voted Task Force X/the Suicide Squad out of existence, prompting Amanda Waller to exploit a loophole in forbidding the use of human operatives by assembling a team of monsters instead, “Task Force M”. This task force, given the nickname of Creature Commandos by Waller herself, must carry out a glorified escort mission to save the ruler of a potential US trade partner from a murderous witch, only for it to transform into an assassination mission with the breakout of World War 3 on the line. It is solid enough, but can feel unevenly paced at times, like Gunn's scripts enjoyed the flashbacks and character moments so much that he looked at the actual plot and went “Oh yeah I gotta put something here”. This is especially true in episodes 5 and 6, and stems from how much of the plot is reliant on conflicting sources of information and how long it takes to clear it up and set the mission straight.
In terms of the lore, it is undeniable as a DC fan that the environmental storytelling and use of cameos and name drops in this season to paint a picture of how this new continuity works makes the future beyond exciting. Even better is how these moments never feel like they are awkwardly nudged in to announce an upcoming movie to you, as often happens with Marvel’s projects. There is an effort to establish a rich lore and history so that Gunn and DC Studios can explore the past in equal measure to the present. It is like if the patrons of the Mos Eisley Cantina from A New Hope were obscure but recognizable names you could tell stories about if you wanted, but serve equally well as the background decoration or pieces of the Commandos’ past they are presented as.
But this story is not really about a task force mission or a peek into the lore of a rebooted franchise. The story of this first season instead truly lies in the Commandos’ internal journeys processing their own trauma and searching for connection that they lost, never had, or denied themselves. In this way, the flashbacks are the bread and butter of the show and what makes this first season's storytelling truly exceptional. They are designed not to tie back to the events of the mission or to be dramatic reveals that each monster narrates to their comrades in arms. They are to show us in the audience what drives each characters’ choices and interactions while thematically exploring all the different definitions of a monster. Those definitions are then pitted against the monsters of the real world: in this particular case war, misinformation, and misogyny. Without the flashbacks, the story would lose its substance and this would be nothing more than what one would probably describe the show as to convince non-comic readers to watch it: “Suicide Squad but with monsters”.
The Style
As with all of James Gunn's comic book projects so far, this season has a bit of a jukebox soundtrack where action sequences and montages are amplified by a song handpicked by Gunn during the writing process. Due to my unfamiliarity with most of the tracks, it largely became just a vibe I came to identify simply as “Creature Commandos music”. A lot of solid rock tracks with Eastern European polka flair sprinkled in, carried most of the time by the works of Gogol Bordello. The band's “Start Wearing Purple” especially stood out as the track for a kickass Bride vs Circe fight in episode 2 that carried a “let’s fucking go” hype energy I would compare to the “Come a Little Bit Closer” scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. It quickly became my favorite song of the bunch and is destined to be on my Spotify Wrapped at the end of the year. But the best use of pop music comes in the next episode, when G.I. Robot mows through Circe’s forces like grass in a euphoric massacre set to The Dresden Dolls’ “Coin-Operated Boy”. This scene was so perfectly done that every single song used after it felt inferior and most failed to capture my attention as the season went on. But I never outright disliked a musical moment on the show, so they clearly did their job setting the mood at the very least. I suspect a rewatch focused on the music will bring more of the songs to my attention and change my mind, but at the moment I am convinced Gunn’s signature use of music peaked early when it came to season 1 of Creature Commandos.
The Verdict
As the first official entry in the DCU, season 1 of Creature Commandos is a promising introduction to this updated timeline that's elevated to greatness by James Gunn’s best band of superpowered misfits yet. It’s only held from perfection by its trio of mediocre villains and a wee pacing problem as the finish line approached. But what works about Creature Commandos works so exceptionally well that those problems mostly feel negligible and can be forgotten as you enjoy the monsters rampaging through Pokolistan and weep over (most of) their backstories.
I’m almost sad the next project is Superman and not a second season of this series. I can only hope the Commandos are set to be the third most prominent team behind the Justice League and the Teen Titans in this new universe. Because otherwise I may have to march to DC Studios and ask to play in their sandbox myself just so I can get more of the Bride and G.I. Robot.
9/10, strongly recommend as long as you are okay with intense gore and potentially distressing subject matter such as depictions of stalking, a threat of sexual violence, and child death.
