Chapter 2
Anyone else would think that the old building Crowley had lead them was more of a ruin than a dorm, and they would be right. Located on a hill, in a dark field, surrounded by dead trees and a beat-up gate, it appeared so dilapidated that one good sneeze might topple it. But Percy wouldn’t be a trainer if her vision was clouded with the present. No, she didn’t see things as what they are, she saw them as what they could be, she looked at the potential and she liked what she was seeing.
“It’s beautiful.” She muttered, finally with some good news, she untightened her hold on Mimikyu.
“Isn’t it? Right, scoot inside now. There you go.”
The two headed inside, and it was safe to say that the interior wasn’t better than the outside, but Percy had already started to make a mental to-do list while looking around, until the headmage interrupted her thoughts.
“This should keep the elements at bay for the time being. Now I should return to my research. Do try to find some way to busy yourself. But don’t let me catch you wandering the campus! Ta!”
With that he went on his merry way, finally leaving Percy alone with her thoughts and Mimikyu. She sat on the broken couch for a while and gave her brain some time to process what happened, was happening, and plan what to do next. When she finished planning, she got up and put that plan into motion.
Firstly she reached to her Pokeball belt and let the rest of her pokemon out. “Okay guys, come on out!”
Pumpkaboo, Mightyena, Dusknoir, Darkrai, and as you already know, Vaporeon. Each came out of their balls with a cry of their names and turned to their trainer.
“I’m assuming you guys have been listening in,”
All five of them nodded.
"Very well, let us commence with our primary objectives." Percy opened her bag and took out her PC that was given to her by Professor Oak. It was his newest invention, normally PCs reside in Pokemon centers but for her, Professor Oak made a portative one, "Indeed, to restore this place to its pristine condition, we shall require the expertise of the most skilled individuals." She chose her Indeedees Sebastian and Mary, Cinccino, and shiny Braixen. "Esteemed ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present our current predicament: By virtue of an encounter with a portal in the distortion world, we have found ourselves transported to an alternate dimension. Consequently, this abode shall serve as our temporary residence until we discover a means to return to our native realm."
The Pokemons that were newly out of the PC took one look at their surroundings and gave their trainer a look of disbelief.
"Behold, my dear companions, though this realm may not appear welcoming at first sight, let us recall the transformation we wrought upon our humble abode in Lavender Town. We fashioned it into a veritable paradise for ourselves. Thus, I dare posit that with patience and unwavering determination, we can bestow upon this place a similar splendor and make it our own sanctuary."
The Pokemon looked among each other and then turned to their trainer for commands whit a newfound determination, they trusted her judgment, they knew she would never let them down.
“Many thanks. Now, Braixen, light up the fireplace, and then lend your aid to Cinccino in the task of sweeping away the accumulated dust.” The two nodded with a cry of their names and Cinccino already started sweeping while Braixen walked to the fireplace. Then Percy turned to the rest of her Pokemon, "While they attend to their duties, let us commence the process of tidying up, beginning with one of the chambers. Pumpkaboo, would you graciously illuminate our path and guide us towards our designated destination?"
In order to make the master bedroom hospitable for Percy, they mainly removed broken bits of the house and cleaned it. Pumpkaboo provided light in the process. Although it was a challenging task, her Pokemon made it easier. The rest of the house could wait. After all, she hadn't yet acquired the means to make proper repairs. Looking out the window, she surveyed the lawn.
“Flygon, Garchomp, Krookodile, can dig a pit to make a lake, and the grass types can plant a vegetable garden, as well as try to prepare habitats for everyone...
Percy didn’t like keeping her friends in PC nor in their Pokeballs but the house was too unstable for all of them right now. She supposed the ghost types could stay in the dorm except for Palossand and Dhelmise. She needed to figure out something for the others. As she was thinking she felt Mimikyu’s black appendages around her leg, she looked down and smiled at him then reached down and took him into her arms.
"Fear not, my dear. Rest assured, we shall persevere. Through ingenuity, adaptability, and unwavering determination, we have triumphed thus far. Trust in our resourcefulness and resilience, for they shall guide us through this endeavor." Droplets of rain fell from the sky as she said this. Eventually, it became a true rainstorm as it got faster and harder.
They watched the rain until there was a slam at the front door that got everyone’s attention.
“GWAH! It’s pouring out there!” a familiar voice whined. Percy walked back to the main room to see the fiery feline, Grim, was now there, soaked. He laughed at her.
“Bwahaha! That look on your face is priceless! Like a bat that got blasted by a water gun.” He noticed all the other monsters when they started to growl at him for insulting their trainer. “Nya!? How many more monsters do you have?”
"Approximately 120, to be more precise.” Percy informed him as she extended an arm to get her Pokemon to calm down. "By what miraculous means did you manage to reenter this space?"
He looked smug. “As if I wouldn’t just sneak back onto campus the second I escaped pryin’ eyes. You all got no idea what I’m capable of! I ain’t givin’ up on goin’ here just ‘cause I got kicked out one measly ol’ time. And if you think otherwise, you don’t know grim!”
“you got spirit, I’ll give you that much, but why are you so determined to go to this school?” she asked.
“Isn’t it obvious? I was born to do this! I’m a magical prodigy who’s got the makin’s to become one of the greatest mages who ever lived! So I’ve been waitin’ and waitin’ fort hat black carriage to come for me. And yet…” his eyes started to fill up with tears. “Hrmph! That Dark Mirror’s got no eye for talent! That’s why I took the initiative and came here myself. You humans don’t understand what a mistake you’re makin’! Not lettin’ me in is a great loss to the World!”
A droplet from the ceiling wiped the smug look from his face as he jumped. “Mrrao! C’mon, scoot over! I’m gettin’ dripped on here!”
Now this made Percy let out an adorable giggle, "Ah, indeed! It seems the repair of the roof has now made its way to the forefront of my ever-growing list of tasks." She said as more drops came from the ceiling.
“Bwah! Another hole in the roof!” Grim cried as he took cover. “ These flamin’ ears are like my trademark, y’know? I can’t let ‘em get doused!”
“And here I thought Dante was fussy with water.” All the other Pokemon snickered at the thought of aquaphobic male Pyroar, quite opposite of his mate Davina, the female Pyroar.
Percy sighed, “Guess I’ll go look for some buckets.”
“I dunno why ya don’t just magic those holes away. You could have it fixed in half a jiff.” Grim pointed out before smirking. ”Ahhh, right. You can’t use magic at all. Pffft. Man, you’re useless.”
Percy glared at him. “At least I don’t look like a drowned Raticate, and I might not have the gift of magic but I take pride in the unique abilities of my loyal Pokemon companions. Rest assured, if your incessant insults persist, I shall summon one of them to graciously escort you back into the downpour."
Mimikyu emphasized her point by clawing at the air with his now bigger-than-normal appendages, making Grim squeak.
“And if it’s that easy to fix the leaks with magic, why don’t you do it then?” Percy asked.
“Ha! You got the wrong idea. I’m just a stranger takin’ shelter from the rain. You ain’t the boss of me, besides you got your monsters to help. If ya had some cans of tuna to trade, well, that’d be another story. But I don’t work for free.”
Percy glared at him and snapped her fingers, knowing what that meant, Mimikyu grabbed Grim with his claws and brought him to Percy’s eye level. “They are Pokemon, and you will address them as such, also if you don’t want to sleep out in the rain, you will help.”
She made a motion for Mimikyu to drop him and the two walked away to find those buckets. The feline grumbled angrily but eventually followed her.
All of her other Pokemon separated to explore their new home for the foreseeable future, only Dusknoir, and Pumpkaboo remained.
With Pumpkaboo lighting their way, five of them neared the staircase when Percy suddenly stopped. Grim was about to ask her why she stopped when she yelled.
“Dusknoir, Foresight!”
The Gripper Pokemon’s body became outlined in light blue and his eye also glowed light blue. He then released a large light blue force field from his body that expanded all around, revealing three ethereal, White forms to them. One of them cackled.
“Yee hee hee… Bwa ha ha ha ha ha. Good instincts. It’s been a while since we’ve had guests!”
“Oh, I’m just itchin’ for new friends! Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha!”
“AAAAAH! GHOSTS!” Grim screamed. “GHOOOOOSTS!”
“Look honey, if you’re scared of ghosts this thing’s really not going to work,” Percy said to the petrified feline. If three marshmallowy gentlemen with cute little top hats were enough to scare him off, he can’t handle the rest of her friends.
“All the people who used ta live here got scared of us and ran away.” The average-looking one explained.
“Oh, did they? How rude of them, from where I stand, you three look like very refined gentlemen to me.” She complimented them. Percy knew people’s prejudice against ghost Pokemon and real ghosts. And even though sometimes they’re right, to her, ghosts have always been just friends she didn’t make yet.
Her compliment seemed to stun him for a moment, but the larger one cut in, “We just want a new ghost to play with! What do you say, buddy?”
Oh she knew this game alright, she just laughed and said, "Fortunate news, gentlemen. I happen to possess a collection of 24 freshly acquired apparitions, ready to cater to the desires of your deceased hearts. And as luck would have it, three of these ethereal beings are currently in our presence."
Grim clung to Percy as Mimikyu, Pumpkaboo, and Dusknoir got ready to battle, “Eeeeep! I’m a master sorcerer! I ain’t afraid of any dumb ghosts! Myahaaa!” He launched a fireball that ghosts immediately dodged.
“Nuh-uh. Not even close.” The bony ghost taunted.
While Mimikyu and Pumpkaboo started to launch shadow balls at them, Dusknoir led them to their way with shadow punch, but they weren’t seriously trying to hurt them. This was just the ghost equivalent of a game of tag.
“Over here! Over here! Ah ha ha ha!”
As they continued to play, Percy turned to Grim, who threw poorly aimed fireballs occasionally. “Why do you close your eyes when you make fire?”
“Shaddup!” Grim argued. “I don’t need any lip from you, human!”
“I’m a trainer and a champion on top of that, this is what I do for a living.” Percy argued back, “Look maybe if you chase them off, the headmage will let you enroll in here?”
Grim immediately changed his attitude. “Myah…?! Hmph… I’m Grim, Master Sorcerer! How come I can’t even hit one of these little—“
When the ghost started to laugh at him, Grim said, “Hrmph! Ganging up on us… Yer a buncha cowards!” even though they outnumbered the ghosts.
"Rest assured, if you adhere to my instructions, your aim will be precise and your targets shall be effortlessly struck." She then turned to her Pokemon and commanded them to stand back to back and Grim to get on top of Pumpkaboo.
“You, human!” Grim said as the monsters all took their places. “You tell me which way the ghosts are!”
“You got it! Dusknoir, use your antenna, find them and get them out of their hiding places.
He eagerly listened to his trainer and felt the electrical waves from the ghosts, and in seconds they were out of the walls they had hidden in.
“Ah, what are you guys!?”
“Are you ghosts too?!”
“How can you find us?!”
After that, the Pokemons and Grim made quickly dealt with them, and with one last fireball Grim threw the ghost gave in.
“Hwaaahhh! Okay, you win! We gotta get out of here! Before we get disappeared for good!” They all vanished one by one.
"If you seek another round, gentlemen, we shall remain present and prepared for your amusement!" Percy yelled after them.
“H-huh?” Grim said in shock. “Did we… win?”
When he started to move too much Pumpkaboo threw him off and get back to her trainer’s side.
“You all did an amazing job,” Percy said as she pet her Pokemon, who gladly accepted it and took Mimikyu in her arms again, then turned to Grim. "I extend my sincerest gratitude for the invaluable assistance you have provided."
“Aw, geez, I was scared outta my—“ He quickly put up a facade. “I mean, they didn’t faze me one bit! Just a walk in the park for a mage of my caliber! Whaddaya got to say now, ghosties? That’s right!”
The Pokemons looked at him weird but Percy stopped them, “I implore you, dears, give the credit when the credit is due.”
The door opened again and the Pokemon charged up their attacks again but it was just the weird Corviknight masked man.
“Good evening. In another gesture of my immense kindness, I have brought you dinner.” He then noticed Grim. “ Wait. That’s the creature we ejected for causing trouble at orientation! What is it doing here?!”
“Helping with the ghosts you forgot to mention.” Percy shot him a look and crossed her arms. She was sensing a thick aura of incompetence from this guy.
Grim looked surprised that she defended him but seemed quite confident with the champion backing him up.
“You’re welcome, by the way!”
The headmage looked confused. “ what is the meaning of this, Miss Remmington? But you know, on that topic, I do seem to recall that this dorm had a mischievous ghost problem. Ah, yes… That’s why it was abandoned, in fact. The ghosts scared away all the students.”
“And did that little fact fly from your mind when you located me and my friends here?” Percy asked with an annoyed tone. She didn’t mind the ghosts but a heads up would be nice.
“Yes, sorry about that, but you were saying that you two joined forces to drive them away?”
"Indubitably, honing and orchestrating teams of remarkable Pokémon to engage in cohesive battles is indeed a vocation that I wholeheartedly pursue. It is through such endeavors that I earn my livelihood." She said while petting Mimikyu.
“’ Joined forces’ ain’t exactly how I’d describe it. More like I drove ‘em away, and the human watched. And I only did it ‘cause I wanted some tuna.”
“Yes, you drove them away WITH my Pokemon’s help.”
Crowley looked at her, rather impressed. “You truly are a beast tamer. Would you two be so kind as to demonstrate your ghost-eradication methods for me?”
“One, no, ‘cause I already wiped ‘em all out.” The feline argued. “And two, no, ‘cause where’s my tuna?!”
“I will play the part of the ghosts. As for the tuna, you’ll receive it when you defeat me.” He smiled to himself. “Oh, what generosity, Crowley…” He then pulled out a vial and chugged it in one go. “Now to chug this transmutation potion!”
The ghost Pokemon readied themselves for battle again as Grim complained.
“Ah, you gotta be kiddin’ me. I gotta work together with the human and her weird monsters again?”
Percy silenced him by picking him up by his collar and putting him on Pumpkaboo again. "Cease your incessant prattling, for it is within the realm of possibility that this particular juncture may present itself as your sole opportunity to seek admission within this school."
“Hrmph. All right, but this is the last time. And I better be up to my jowls in tuna afterward!”
Needless to say, Crowley didn’t last very long. With the combination of Dusknoir hackling him when he vanished, Mimikyu, Pumpkaboo, and Grim’s combined attack, with Percy leading them, they were quickly able to beat him. The ghost types didn’t even break a sweat but poor grim was having a hard time catching his breath.
“*Pant* *Pant*… Well?”
“Incredible… I’ve never seen anyone bend monsters to their will quite the way you have.” The headmage muttered, returning to his original form.
“That’s my day job, headmage,” Percy told him while putting one hand to her hip.
“I must confess, my educator’s intuition did sense something about you after that brouhaha at orientation, Percy. I could tell you had a certain animal trainer-y, beast master-ish quality to you. Oh, yes.” That said, I…” he kept mumbling to himself all the while Percy and her pokemon gave him a deadpanned look.
“Really? What was your first clue?” she asked rhetorically, she then side-eyed the little feline, “regardless, would it be possible for Grim to stay with us?”
“WHAT? A monster, stay HERE?”
“Whoa, did you just…?” Grim asked, genuinely touched.
Percy shrugged. I implore you, sir, to consider allowing Grim to remain in our company. He may possess a fiery temperament, but I have had experience dealing with such spirited Fire-types in the past. Furthermore, even if we were to dismiss him, rest assured that he would find a means to rejoin us. By permitting him to stay, I can assume the responsibility of overseeing his actions. I beseech you, kind sir, to grant us this favor.
Crowley sighed. “Hmmm… I suppose I cannot deny your plea. Very well.”
“Myah?! Really?” Grim yelled as the ghost Pokemon gave their trainer an unsure look, but Percy reassured them with scratches.
“Let me be clear!” the headmage interrupted. “Under no circumstances would I admit anyone to Night Raven College who has not been selected by the Dark Mirror—especially not a monster! Nor do I intend to allow you, Percy, to freeload until you’re able to return home.”
“Hrmph. Never shoulda got my hopes up…” Grim muttered.
“Now allow me to explain. Since the Dark Mirror transported you here. Therefore this school does bear some responsibility for your well-being. So I will allow you to remain in this dorm, free of charge. However, you will need to pay for your own food, clothing, and incidentals. As to how you will do so, penniless as you are…” he thought for a moment. “Ah. Ah ha. Yes, a fine plan, I’m simply going to ask you to do a few odd jobs around campus. From what you’ve done here, Miss Remmington, I can tell you know your way around a broom. So what do you say to you two working together as a janitorial team? If you agree to that, I will make a special exception and allow you to remain on campus. I’ll also allow you to use the library, so that you may study, and research ways to return home. How boundlessly charitable I am. Ah, but only when your work is over, of course!”
Percy sighed, “I guess it can’t be helped. Okay, sounds fair.”
But Grim didn’t agree, “Whaaat? What kind of deal is that?! I wanna put on one of those sweet uniforms and be a student, not sweep up people’s junk!”
“If you’re not satisfied with my offer, I can arrange to have you thrown out again.”
“Myah?!... Alright, fine! Let’s do it.”
“Fear not, Grim.” Percy said, with now Mimikyu on her shoulder. “With the help of my Pokemon, we’ll finish everything in a jiffy.”
“Wonderful, then I beseech you both, starting from tomorrow morning, to work as hard as the newest members of Night Raven College’s janitorial staff!”
His words made Percy freeze, “I’m terribly sorry but did you say morning?”
“Yes, see you in the morning,”
“Wait, but—“
The masked man was already out the door, “Sleep tight, you’re gonna need it!”
“But I have solar urticaria…” Percy sighed, “Considering the circumstances, it seems I shall require an ample supply of sunscreen.”
That night Percy returned Migthyena, Dusknoir, Braixen, and Darkrai into her PC, and got Gengar, Polteageist, Phantump, and Chandelure out and explained them the situation. Together they spend the night cleaning the rest of the dorm, while Grim fell asleep in Percy’s room, soon after the headmage left. Finally, the morning came she got Flygon, Garchomp, and Krookodile out for them to dig that pit and Gyarados and Milotic to fill it. As she was watching them work from inside the dorm, with Mimikyu on her right shoulder, the ghosts approached them.
“Do you ever sleep?” the largest one asked. “You’ve been working all night.”
Percy turned to them, “Typically I indulge in slumber during the morning hours and rise at the break of dawn. However, if this temporary custodial duty is to endure, I must acquaint myself with the morning regimen. Thus, I shall make an earnest attempt to remain awake today and indulge in restful sleep come nightfall."” She explained.
“So I hear you’ll be living here from now on?” the bony one cackled. “Hope you like pranks as much as we do! Hya ha ha!”
She smiled at them. “Verily, I do hold a fondness for such playful endeavors. However, I implore you, dear gentlemen, to exercise caution, for should you initiate a spirited prank war, it would grant me the prerogative to respond in kind.” She winked and extended her hand to them. “I didn’t get a chance to introduce myself, I am Persephone Remmington, though I invite you to address me as Percy. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
The three ghosts shared looks with each other, then the average-looking one came forth and lightly put his hand on top of hers. “Pleasure to meet you too, young lady. My name is Phineas,” he first pointed to the large ghost then the bony one. “This is Gus and Ezra. To be honest you’re different from anyone we’ve come across so far.”
“Yeah, you’re not scared one bit,” Gus spoke up.
“Why would I be scared? Ghosts have always been my friends, I grew up with them.” Percy grinned and then looked at the clock in her Poketch. ”And speaking of friends, I’ve got to feed them. Would you please excuse me?”
The three ghosts giggled and disappeared inside a wall, while Percy walked towards the kitchen. It wasn't anything to be jealous of, still, it had dishes, an oven, and a somewhat working fridge, which was more than she had growing up. She took the Pokemon food jar out of her bag and yelled, “Okay guys it’s breakfast time!”
All at once the members of her main team with Cinccino, Vaporeon and the pair of Indeedees invaded the kitchen. She divided the Pokemon food between the 10 of them, then sighed. “I really need that vegetable garden done today.” She said as Grim walked into the kitchen.
“Uh, I’m starving.”
“Good morning, Grim.” She greeted.
“PHANTUMP!” Grim was about to answer but the Stump Pokemon’s sudden greeting made him shriek instead.
Percy laughed and translated for her friend as she watched him run circles around the feline. “He says ‘hi’, Please accept my apologies for his exuberance, as he tends to become overly animated upon encountering a new acquaintance.” She then introduced her friends one by one, “That’s Phantump, the floating teapot is Polteageist, the Purple pumpkin is Pumpkaboo, the purple chandelier is Chandelure, the purple ghost is Gengar, the stylish rodent is Cinccino, the ever so diligent Indeedees Sebastian and Mary, this little cutie is Mimikyu.” She while giving her partner who jumped into her arms from her shoulder, a kiss.
“And you already met Vaporeon yesterday.” She finished.
“You have too many monsters. Why do you have so many monsters?” Grim wept silently.
Just then, Crowley walked in with a very concerned look on his face.
“Are you aware that there are two dragons, a red crocodile, and one scary, one majestic, two sea serpents outside?”
“Oh, Rest assured, they’re mine. They are currently establishing suitable habitats within our new domain.” Percy reassured him.
“Very well, did you sleep well?”
“Not at all! When I sprawled out on the bed, the mattress fell right through the frame! Exactly how ramshackle IS this dorm? And worse yet, I got woken up by ghosts!” Grim complained.
Percy shrugged, “My night went well.”
Crowley smiled. “I am delighted to hear that you’ve adjusted so well, despite being sent to another dimension! Now, speaking of moving on, let us discuss your assignment for today. Your job today is to clean the campus. That said, the campus is vast, and without magic, it'd be quite a herculean task to clean it all. Therefore, today I’ll have you focus on the area spanning from the front Gates to the library. I do expect that you’ll keep a close eye on Grim, lest he causes another incident like yesterday.”
“Understood.”
“Do not fail me. You and a few of your… Pokemon, can eat lunch in the cafeteria. I eagerly await the fruits of your labor.
The headmage headed out as Grim grumpily crossed his arms.
“Hrmph. I ain’t cleanin’ nothin’! ı’m here to study magic so I can be blastin’ off spells left and right! Like BAM! POW! FWOOM!”
“After we clean, we can study in the library.”
He grumbled as Percy choose six Pokemon to accompany her.
“Hmm, Mimikyu is a must, who else? Cinccino, Vaporeon, Unfeazant, Sebastian, and Phantump. Yes, that’ll do nicely.” She then opened Her PC and got all of her grass types out. “Serperior, Lilligant, Shiinotic, Shaymin, Whimsicott, Appletun, Flapple, Applin, Decidueye, Eldegoss, Roserade, Arboliva, come on out!”
And in a flash out they were, Percy quickly explained to them where they were, gave them the container that contained the berries, and told them to plant and grow them till she came back. As they walked to the backyard to do as their trainer commanded, Percy run upstairs and changed out of her robes to the spare clothes she had in her bag, thoroughly applied a generous amount of sunscreen, put on her sunglasses, took out her parasol, grabbed her bag and she was ready to go.
