Snow-white marble quarry in Buguldeika.
One of the largest in Russia and in the world, the marble quarry in the village of Buguldeika is located in the Olkhonsky district of the Irkutsk region on the shores of Lake Baikal and is part of a nature conservation area. Experts say that the territory of the Buguldeika deposit contains more than 10 million cubic meters of marble, which is more than two billion years old. So the deposit is much older than Lake Baikal itself. Due to the nature conservation status of the area, mining here has been suspended.
The quarry has not been in operation since the last millennium, but despite this, it has become a center of attraction for tourists who are happy to come to see the huge blocks of marble - next to them, a person seems tiny. In the warm season, lovers of original photos pose on the huge blocks, and rock climbers often come. In 2022-23, the quarry turned into a full-fledged tourist site. For security purposes, it was fenced off, and "crooked mirrors" were installed on marble blocks on the ground surface, somewhat reminiscent of the T-1000 robot from Terminator 2. You can get there at any time for free.

OP: I'm taking the civil service exam and if I get in there, will they fire me if I were mentally unstable?
Cnetizens: Sweetheart, guess why the civil service exam is oversubscribed as fuck?
yll: No, we have one in our unit. His performance bonus was deducted, and then he, armed with a fruit knife, stabbed two Deputy Directors of Bureau and then smashed the Director-general's office. He is now recuperating at home, and we have to visit him regularly. However, he is very principled and only attacks leaders when he has a seizure, not ordinary staff.
xhzz: Warrior.
dtxgg: I heard from my senior coworker in the organization that during one of the general meetings, when the Director-general was making an impassioned speech, this big sister suddenly slammed the table and shouted, “It's all bullshit!” Then she waved her sleeve and left, and from then on everyone realized that she was not normal. Big sister's exploits included rushing in during a bureau meeting and flickering on the forehead of every Director with her knuckle; when the leaders were eating at noon in the cafeteria's booths, she rushed in, made the rounds, and asked, “Yo, where's the corruption?” The leaders told her to go home and get well, she said she was not sick. After that, the big sister became the real Director-general of our unit, walking everywhere with two security guards behind. She came especially early every day, wearing sunglasses, patrolling the unit building, behind the two little brother trembling. No matter who it is, Big Sister will bash them right to their faces. The canteen auntie who scooped less food when dishing out, the masses who came to the unit to handle administrative affairs and stole the paper from the printer. She bashed them all, not to mention the leaders. The leaders have become numb. Later, the big sister's condition was slowly brought under control, and she had already retired when I joined the unit.
xxxC: LMFAO check the comments lmao
luvpp: There was a man in my mom's unit who became mentally unstable after joining the workforce and ran to the Director's office every day to sit there, saying that he himself was the director, and then the director granted him paid leave, and he still went to the unit to sit in the director's office as usual.
yzxka: ASDDFGHFGJ this one
momo: Our unit invited an expert to give a lecture, and when it was all over, he rushed up to the expert and asked loudly, “Do you know what it means to be full of crap?”
sbkpg: lkkfghdfgsdf
xuexue: The leader took me to another building in the office area, beforehand he specifically explained to me, “There is a man who guards the gate, if he asks you, do you believe in the universe, you must answer categorically, I do! Otherwise you won't get in.” Later I realized that the man was a little mentally unstable, and he was transferred to guard the gate, in fact, that building was originally inside the office area but the higher-ranks let them built a fence and set up a security booth in order to give him a post. Once the Director of Division went to a meeting and failed to answer his question and did not get in.
Vvvviola: After reading the comments, you will understand why everyone wants to take the civil service exam, because it is a job where even if you are really crazy, you will not be fired. It is completely different from capitalists squeezing laborers and laying off employees after squeezing them out.
momo: But as long as you don't go crazy, you'll be used like crazy.
arww: That was the case with the senior who was my tutor when I joined the office. She was crazily obsessed with her religion, and I don't know what kind of sect she was, but she played Buddhist scriptures in her office every day, wore a big red robe(*the unorthodox kind sect of buddhism), and meditated when she wasn't working, and practiced her skill in the room. I ordered a takeout at noon, it was Duck Blood and Vermicillon Soup. She righteously criticized me: duck blood can't be eaten, the animal's blood is full of anger, eating it will lead to evil spirits. I was so frightened that I dropped the vermicelli in my mouth. The leaders were quite polite to her. I worked with her for a month, she retired and went home, and I took over her job.
momo: Sister you go eat Duck Blood and Vermicillon Soup fearlessly hahahahhahhahah
lin: The Chief of my section, beat up two directors-general in a row, the third director-general was a woman, she told him, "I'm a woman, you can't beat me up".
xrhmm: they are even haggling
sytxztt: fuck
sstd: so did he beat that director?
lin: No, he doesn't beat women

So. Been a while since I shared my opinions on a mech.
So let's talk about the Nelson, and, because of its history and association, Albatross.
So, the Nelson is a highly mobile skirmisher chassis meant to conduct a variety of high-tempo operations. Specifically the kind of operations that IPS-N likes to conduct when on the offensive, and is, for their use, meant as a compliment to the Blackbeard in situations where ballistics are a non-starter.
On a qualitative level, I think the Nelson is decent. It does what it's designed to do well, as is the trend with IPS-N frames. However, the Nelson is one of the few times IPS-N uses paracausal tech.
The Perpetual Motion Drive onboard the Nelson serves to make it move faster, and make it shiftier, making it better at what it already does. Move fast.
Because of this drive, as well as it's manuverability, the Nelson tends to outshine the everest in conversations of fastest mech, and while the everest is faster, the Nelson isn't far behind.
And then they strapped a ramjet onto it! Because it wasn't fast enough apperently!
Now, This mech has become synonymous with Albatross, and for good reason. IPS-N makes a whole lot very good frames with a decent price tag, combine that with the agreement the two organizations have had since before thirdcom, and some people make the mistake of thinking Albatross is subordinate to IPS-N.
They're not.
Albatros cooperates with IPS-N on convoy security detail, both as an augment to IPS-N's own in-house security teams, like the ever ignominious Trunk Security, and as subject mater experts, as Albatros will often engage pirates on their own and often without any input from IPS-N.
Now, remember when I said Albatross predates thirdcom?
They were the spark that lit the Thirdcom revolution. Seccom had them listed as a "Terrorist Organization" due to their saunch anti-authoritarian position, and their willingness to act on that.
Yes, IPS-N unofficially backed them in this period, but that was because for most of the lead up to the Thirdcom revolution, IPS-N were fence sitters. They saw the writing on the wall, that there was going to be a revolution, and so the curried favor with both seccom, and the revolutionaries to hedge their bets.
Notice how IPS-N's formal agreement with Albatross only happened after it became clear that Seccom was losing.
The relationship between IPS-N and Albatross on the surface seems to be like they will always have eachother's backs. That's IPS-N lying through their teeth.
From having spent some time with Albatross on my way out of HA space, Albatross, especially the veteran leadership, many of whom are older than Thirdcom itself, views IPS-N with the same trepidation as anyone else who knows of the shady shit that they got caught doing. They would never let their organization become subordinate to such a group.
//For Cogito Ergo Sum\\
(OOC: A lot of this about albatross is because many here in the fandom make the mistake of seeing Albatross as an extension of IPS-N. They aren't. They would sooner tell IPS-N to get bent than let themselves become an extension of that which they fight against. That doesn't mean that they won't be misled, but they would never willingly or knowingly become a tool for IPS-N to expand its influence. (not to mention, IPS-N has a gameplan akin to that of the imperialist-era Dutch. They have nowhere near the territorial ambitions of, say, Harrison Armories. IPS-N is perfectly happy being space UPS/Fed-Ex, they just want to be the only game in town. That's why they have Trunk Security. To do all of that shady shit people think IPS-N has Albatross do for them.))

... Thanks Charles. For an untold amount of time, the Europa Ice War has been raging on a small frozen moon in Jupiter's orbit. Protests have erupted globally around government buildings, recruitment centers, and capital city streets as citizen dissent reaches a record high. Just behind me you can see the wall of people chanting and yelling as Terra Secure Forces hold the line near the fence of Launch Site Tango, in anticipation of yet another shipment of Marines.
Anti-War protestors are calling this "The Forever War", citing the continuing body count both on the moon and in transit.
As Terra Governments shorten the length of training camps, fewer and fewer pods even make it to Europa at all. It's clear to everyone that this war has taken it's toll.
The less than transparent Terra Government has caused many to debate what the war is even about. Conspiracy theorists speak of a dark and ancient evil, drawing people into the moon for unknown and malicious intent. Experts however suggest more likely motivations; that the moon itself, when claimed, could solve the imminent water crisis, largely ignored by official government reports here on Terra.
Those in support of the Europa Ice War claim that The President has our best intentions in mind, and that we should trust in the systems. Dissenting voices often retaliate, saying blind obedience of a "shadow government" is how we ended up this far in the first place.
Tensions are definit-- Charles? Can you... Can you hear that sound? I think... Sorry viewers I'm getting... Oh my God. Oh my God everyone is screaming get down I-- ughf-- I uhm. Okay its like 2.30 am, I can’t sleep and have this idea stuck in my head and I just KNOW I‘m not the only one, although reddit has like two posts asking about it and I found like just two fanarts? Nevertheless I had to write it and I‘m sorry if its not good or anything and sorry for not factchecking the timeline or wordings of things but I‘m too lazy to watch the movie while writing so yeah, just bear with me on this one.
Jurassic Park: A New Beginning with Steve Irwin
Chapter 1: The Crocodile Hunter and the Dinosaurs
John Hammond never did anything halfway. When he set out to bring dinosaurs back from extinction, he spared no expense. And when it came time to ensure his dream was viable—to secure expert approval—he knew he couldn’t rely on paleontologists alone. No, this wasn’t just about fossilized bones or ancient plant life. This was about living, breathing animals.
And so, instead of stopping at Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler, Hammond decided to seek out one more voice—one that spoke not of the past, but of the present. A man whose name was known across the world. A man who had spent his life face-to-face with nature’s deadliest predators.
Steve Irwin.
Queensland, Australia — 1993
The midday sun beat down on the Australia Zoo, glinting off the water of the crocodile enclosure. A small crowd stood gathered along the fence, leaning forward in anticipation. The air buzzed with excitement as Steve Irwin—barefoot, clad in khaki, and grinning ear to ear—stood at the water’s edge, holding a chunk of raw meat.
“Alright, mates, watch this,” he called out, his voice full of boyish enthusiasm. “Now, this is Agro. He’s a big salty—fifteen feet, over a thousand kilos, and an absolute ripper of a croc. But what makes him real special is how he strikes. Watch the way he uses the water for cover…”
A ripple moved through the pond. The crowd gasped.
Then, in an explosion of force, the crocodile lunged upward, jaws wide, teeth flashing in the sunlight. Steve barely flinched as he tossed the meat in the air. Agro’s massive jaws snapped shut with a bone-shaking CRACK, and he slid back beneath the surface.
“Crikey, did you see that?” Steve laughed, turning back to the crowd. “Perfect precision. That’s a predator that’s been evolving for millions of years. Just incredible, right?”
The audience erupted in applause, but Steve had already turned his attention back to the water, watching Agro retreat to the depths.
That’s when he heard the voice.
“Absolutely magnificent, Mr. Irwin,” came the smooth, practiced tone of an older man. “I can see why they call you ‘The Crocodile Hunter.’”
Steve turned, wiping sweat from his brow. Before him stood an elderly man in a crisp white suit, leaning lightly on a cane. His blue eyes twinkled with something Steve recognized instantly—passion.
“Well, g’day, mate!” Steve grinned, stepping forward to shake his hand. “Steve Irwin. And who might you be?”
“John Hammond,” the man said, shaking Steve’s hand warmly. “I’ve come a long way to meet you.”
Inside Steve’s Office – Australia Zoo
A fan whirred softly, barely cutting through the Queensland heat. Steve sat behind his cluttered desk, arms folded, as John Hammond spread out a series of photos and documents in front of him. What Steve saw nearly took his breath away.
“Now, I know this must seem… impossible,” Hammond said, watching Steve’s face closely. “But it’s real. I’ve created a biological preserve—an island where dinosaurs live again.”
Steve let out a slow breath, rubbing his jaw. “You’re telling me… you’ve actually got real dinosaurs? Not just bones? Living, breathing dinosaurs?”
Hammond nodded. “Thanks to cutting-edge genetic engineering, yes. And that’s why I’m here, Mr. Irwin. I need someone who understands animals—not as distant relics of the past, but as living creatures.”
Steve barely blinked before he let out a booming laugh. “Mate, that’s the most bonkers thing I’ve ever heard! But crikey, if it’s true, I have to see it.”
Hammond’s smile widened. “I was hoping you’d say that.”
Two Days Later — En Route to Isla Nublar
The InGen helicopter cut through the sky, the ocean stretching endlessly below. Steve leaned out slightly, watching the waves roll beneath them. He felt the kind of exhilaration he hadn’t experienced since wrangling his first croc as a boy.
Across from him sat Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler, paleontologists whose expertise Hammond had also recruited. Grant, ever skeptical, kept shooting Steve sidelong glances.
“So, you’re some kind of… what, wildlife expert?” Grant finally asked.
Steve grinned. “Something like that. I work with crocs mostly, but I’ve wrangled just about everything—big cats, venomous snakes, even the odd cassowary. If it’s dangerous, I study it. If it’s endangered, I protect it.”
Grant frowned slightly. “And Hammond thinks you’ll have insight into dinosaurs?”
“Well, mate,” Steve said, flashing a mischievous grin, “I figure a predator’s a predator, whether it’s got scales or feathers. Crocs haven’t changed much in millions of years. What’s a dinosaur but a big, scaly mystery waiting to be figured out?”
Ellie smirked. “I think I like you.”
Hammond clapped his hands together. “Excellent! Now, hold on tight—because welcome… to Jurassic Park!”
As the Island Appears…
Through the chopper’s windows, the massive gates of Jurassic Park loomed in the distance. Lush greenery stretched as far as the eye could see, untouched wilderness hiding ancient creatures long thought extinct.
Steve leaned forward, eyes sparkling like a child’s. “Ohhh, mate, this is gonna be wild…”
And as the helicopter descended, none of them had any idea just how wild it was about to get.

The charge that the United Nations is failing to listen to Israeli women elides the fact that, to date, no women have testified publicly about experiencing sexual violence. As Israeli advocates have correctly insisted, this doesn’t mean sexual violence did not occur. Many of the victims of violence on October 7 are dead and will never be able to tell their stories in their own voices, and others may not speak publicly for years, if ever. However, we do not honor the voices of those who may have experienced sexual violence by ventriloquizing them or claiming to speak on their behalf. This is especially true in a context where independent investigations are being intentionally frustrated, and where it is not at all obvious that victims of violence on Oct 7 desire a war of vengeance. As Israeli hostages being held in Gaza continue to die from violence there, many of their families are calling for a ceasefire.
Historically, women have not only been silenced or disbelieved about sexual violence. They have also been spoken for and instrumentalized, particularly in conflict situations. For example, in 2011, claims that Viagra had been distributed to Mohammar Gaddafi’s soldiers to encourage mass rape were widely circulated, including by the then-United States Ambassador to the United Nations and ICC Prosecutor, despite an acknowledged lack of victim testimony verifying the claims. These rumours provided essential context within which Security Council support for military intervention was generated. They were subsequently debunked, with an International Commission of Inquiry finding claims of an overall policy of sexual violence against civilians unsubstantiated, but only after the war was complete.
‘Believe Women’ does not, and cannot, mean ‘Believe the IDF’, the Israeli police or security force, or even those who claim to be feminist advocates. As Judith Levine has suggested, the actual victims of violence on October 7 ‘are disappearing into propaganda, becoming talking points to legitimize the pain of other women, children, and men in the killing field on the other side of the fence.’ The dangers of propaganda are particularly pressing in a conflict that has already seen eyewitness testimony of atrocities, such as the beheading of over forty babies, being withdrawn only after being widely circulated and even repeated by United States President Joe Biden.
In contrast to calls for swift condemnation and authoritative statements of what happened, proper investigations that allow victims time and space to speak with adequate material support and protections take time and are almost impossible in conditions of active conflict. In the former Yugoslavia, for instance, the investigation conducted by a Commission of Experts took years and could only begin once peace was established. By refusing to cease hostilities and allow an independent investigation conducted in accordance with international standards of fairness, Israel is prioritising shielding itself from accountability for its own actions in Gaza. As a result, Israel is deferring and potentially denying its opportunity for justice and accountability as well as the opportunity for victims’ voices to be heard on the international stage.

Good Fences (Fluffuary #16)
FEB16: Long Walk
Author's Note: Y'all, I'm sorry. I'm struggling today. Hope this is okay.
John’s teammates had all flown off to their respective final destinations, and you were alone once again. Since he would be on leave for a while, you decided it might be a good time to get away. So, he came up with the idea to take a trip up to the Catskills to camp and enjoy the cool spring weather.
The drive up to the mountains was long, but it was beautiful. You and John talked about everything under the sun, and you shared a playlist together, singing loudly — and maybe a little off-key — in the car together. He held your hand when the roads were easy, and when you took off your hoodie to cool down for a bit, you caught him staring out of the corner of his eye.
When you arrived at the campsite, he was an expert at putting together the tent. You helped when you could, and you started making some sandwiches for lunch.
“Did you want to take a walk up to the cliff there? If I remember right, it’s a pretty amazing view,” you suggested.
“Alright,” he smiled, “That sounds great, love. Lead the way.”
With lunch finished and cleaned up, you secured the camp and headed for the viewpoint. The hike was extremely easy, and there were some parts of the trail that were wide enough for you to walk side by side, holding each other’s hands.
The vantage point was deserted. You had expected crowds with the nice weather, but no one seemed to be camping in this area. It was wonderful to have it all to yourselves, and when you reached the top of the trail, the view did not disappoint.
John sighed as he looked out over the cliffside,
“Stunning.”
“It really is. Thank you for coming with me, John,” you wrapped your arm around his waist and leaned into his side, relaxing into his broad body.
“Mmm. You’ve been givin’ me bloody good views all day, haven’t you?” He commented.
You raised an eyebrow at him,
“What do you mean?”
“You know that shirt’s proper transparent, right?”
Your blood went cold, and you looked down at yourself. From your angle, it looked like a normal shirt, and even though you didn’t need to wear a bra with it due to its compression fabric, you thought it looked fine. You asked,
“What? Are you serious?”
Instead of responding, John smirked and turned you toward him, squaring your shoulders with his. Then, he took his fingers and began to gently rub your nipples through the shirt, finding them immediately without needing to guess. The slick fabric made his touch feel intense and it tingled across your flesh, making your body respond to him right away. Your nipples hardened into taut peaks, and he began to pluck at them cruelly, making you writhe beneath his hands.
“Serious. I can see damn near everything, love. Not that I’m complainin’,” he grinned and leaned down to kiss your neck.
“Oh, God,” you whispered, your mind going blank as your pleasure took over.
“Don’t worry, darlin’,” he whispered back, “There’s no one around.”
“John,” you were nervous, “What if… mmf… what if someone comes?”
“They won’t,” he chuckled, dragging his hands up underneath your shirt, cupping your bare breasts in his hands, warm and greedy.
He began to squeeze them softly, massaging your flesh and heating your skin, kissing your neck all the while. You were nearly trembling from his affection. The fact that he was touching you like this in a very public place — even if it was deserted — was making you feel wild and unruly.
“Such a pretty girl,” he praised you in your ear, nearly growling in the dark gravel of his voice, “Perfect fuckin’ tits. So soft. Sensitive, hm?”
He pinched your hard nipple, increasing the sensations he was already sending to you, and you gasped.
John laughed quietly to himself, enjoying your reactions to his efforts. He smiled and said,
“You wanna feel what you do to me, love?”
He took your hand and placed it over the crotch of his jeans, and you were shocked to find him fully erect, his cock standing flush and upright, the swollen head of his length threatening to peek out over his beltline.
“John,” you whined, “Take me back to camp, please…”
“Better be quick, pretty girl. Double time.”
You giggled, wriggling out of his hands and heading back down the hill at a quick clip, and he moved to chase you, pinching your ass as he caught up. Luckily, you made it back to the tent without running into any other campers, but you made a mental note not to trust that shirt again.

Part of Stonehenge has been covered in orange powder paint by protesters.
Two Just Stop Oil campaigners sprayed the powder paint on the historic site near Salisbury, Wiltshire, at about 12:00 BST on Wednesday.
The move comes the day before celebrations beginfor the Summer Solstice at the 5,000-year-old landmark.
Wiltshire Police confirmed two people had been arrested on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument.
Just Stop Oil said the orange powder paint was cornflour and it would "wash away with rain".
The group named the two protesters as Niamh Lynch, a 21-year-old student from Oxford, and Rajan Naidu, a 73-year-old from Birmingham, in a statement.
'Extremely upsetting'
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the incident as a “disgraceful act of vandalism”.
Leader of the Labour Party Sir Keir Starmer said the damage was "outrageous" and described Just Stop Oil as "pathetic".
Members of the public were heard shouting "no" and seen running to intervene as the campaigners ran up to the stone circle at the Unesco world heritage site.
A spokeswoman for English Heritage described the spraying of the monument as "extremely upsetting" and confirmed the site remained open to the public.
She said the incident would not affect the annual summer solstice, with celebrations still planned to take place overnight on Thursday.
BBC correspondent, Paul Clifton, the first reporter to get to the scene shortly after the incident, said the three stones closest to the public path were "splattered" with the powder.
He added that many of the tourists visiting the monument were "slightly bemused".
"Stonehenge managers and security guards are standing by the path," he said.
"I've heard a suggestion that because it is powder paint and the weather is dry and sunny, it may perhaps be removed without lasting damage, but they will need experts to inspect the stone before forming an opinion."
Just Stop Oil said the motivation behind the incident was to demand the next UK government end the extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal by 2030.
A spokesperson for the group said: "Continuing to burn coal, oil and gas will result in the death of millions.
"We have to come together to defend humanity or we risk everything."
Mike Pitts, archaeologist and author of How to Build Stonehenge, said the incident was "potentially quite concerning".
He said: “The monument has been fenced off for decades and the megaliths' surfaces are protected.
"They are sensitive and they are completely covered in prehistoric markings which remain to be fully studied and any surface damage to the stones is hugely concerning.
“A rich garden of life has grow on the megaliths, an exceptional lichen garden has grown. So it’s potentially quite concerning.”
A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: "We responded to a report that orange paint had been sprayed on some of the stones by two suspects.
"Our enquiries are ongoing and we are working closely with English Heritage."

Drones, snipers, razor wire, sniffer dogs, body armor, bulletproof glass, and 24-hour armed security.
This is not a list of protections in place for a visit by the president of the United States nor the contents of a shipment to frontline troops fighting in Ukraine. This is a list of the security measures election officials in counties across the US have had to implement ahead of Tuesday’s vote as a result of the unprecedented threats they have faced in recent years.
Officials are putting in place the typical final measures to ensure the smooth operation of an election, but beyond checking that they have enough ballots and that machines are working properly, officials are now faced with having to monitor for threats and make sure they have done everything they can to protect themselves and their staff.
“Given the current political environment, the possibility that an event may occur has increased, and our election professionals have responded in kind,” says Tammy Patrick, a former election official in Arizona’s Maricopa County who is now a senior adviser at the nonprofit Bolstering Elections Initiative. “Efforts focusing on the physical security of the voters, election workers, and staff by putting in bulletproof glass, panic buttons, razor wire, and fencing are fairly common, as is the installation of surveillance cameras and systems, cyber protections, and training on de-escalation techniques and response drills.”
Nowhere in the US is the militarization of the election process more evident than in Maricopa County.
The fourth largest county in the nation, Maricopa became ground zero for election denial conspiracists in recent years, after GOP lawmakers sanctioned a bogus recount in 2021, run by the Florida company Cyber Ninjas.
As a result, the county has for years been putting increased security measures in place. “We're a fortress now,” Stephen Richer, the Maricopa County Recorder, told WIRED back in February, outlining how he had to navigate security fencing, metal detectors, and security checks in order to get into his office.
As the 2024 election approaches, the measures Maricopa officials are putting in place have been ratcheted up significantly.
Officials have added a second layer of security fencing to protect election offices, as well as concrete k-rails, which means election workers will be bused in from offsite locations due to reduced parking spaces. At the country’s tabulation center, every door will be fitted with metal detectors, floodlights will be installed, and on election day the center will be protected by a ring of snipers deployed on roofs around the building, election officials told NBC.
There will also be mounted police on standby outside the building, round-the-clock armed security, and drones in flight over the building, monitoring for approaching threats. The entire election office building is also covered in security cameras that livestream everything online for anyone to watch, a security measure that doubles as a way of offering transparency into its election process.
“The security and safety of our elections and those that help conduct them are paramount in ensuring a smooth election process,” Taylor Kinnerup, communications director for the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office, tells WIRED. “Since January of 2021, our office has increased badge security access, installed permanent barriers, and added additional cybersecurity measures based on the recommendations of law enforcement and other experts.”
The threats against election workers spiked in the wake of the 2020 election, spurred on by Donald Trump’s baseless allegations that the election was stolen. While the threats receded somewhat in between election cycles, they have picked up again in recent months.
WIRED revealed earlier this month that the Department of Homeland Security has issued a series of reports to government agencies warning about the “heightened risk” of right-wing extremists carrying out attacks around the election.
Just last week, the Justice Department’s Election Threats Task Force announced charges against four men for threats they made against election officials. “The fact that election workers need to be worried about their security is incomprehensible and unacceptable,” FBI director Chris Wray said in a statement about the threats.
Some of the charges relate to threats made back in 2022; as a result, election officials have been preparing for years for next week’s vote. Since the beginning of last year, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has conducted over 1,000 voluntary physical security assessments at election offices.
One of these assessments was conducted in Pennsylvania’s Luzerne County in late August, with officials from CISA and Homeland Security recommending that barriers be installed to prevent cars from ramming into the ground floor of the building housing the county’s election offices in Wilkes Barre.
“This is a measure taken to safeguard staff, the public, and the ballots,” Luzerne County manager Romilda Crocamo told local TV station WVIA earlier this month as workers installed boulders along the front of the building.
Crocamo also said the county had decided against using drop boxes because they could not adequately protect them. This week, multiple drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, were set on fire in incidents police say were linked.
In addition to protecting the buildings where election staff work, some high-profile election officials have had to protect themselves.
Arizona secretary of state Adrian Fontes, the top election official in his state, revealed on Monday that he regularly wears a bulletproof vest after a series of threats were posted online and included his home address. In Adams County, Colorado, the county clerk and recorder Josh Zygielbaum has also been advised by local police to wear body armor after someone followed him home after a recent local election.
Zygielbaum recently told USA Today that he has taken the advice and now wears one every day. He has previously used militaristic phrases like “harden the office as a target” to describe his efforts to beef up security, which has included the installation of panic buttons under every desk
Tate Fall, Cobb County, Georgia’s election director, has also installed panic buttons that link directly to emergency services after a poll worker reported an agitated voter during this year’s presidential primary who was carrying a gun.
In some cases, new election offices have been built since the last election, including ones in California’s Los Angeles County and Durham County, North Carolina. These have been built with security in mind and feature bulletproof glass, security cameras, and doors that will open only with the right credentials.
In Los Angeles County, they are also deploying trained sniffer dogs to screen all the mail coming into election offices after a surge in letters sent to officials containing white powder, several of which have tested positive for fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid that can be deadly even in small doses.
As a result, most election offices across the country have Narcan kits on hand, and officials have been trained on how to administer the drug in the case of an accidental opioid overdose. Taking things a step further, in Durham County’s new election office, they have constructed a dedicated mail-sorting room that features a separate exhaust system to prevent potentially hazardous substances contaminating the rest of the office.
“Election workers now need to be experts in security, cybersecurity, public health, and public relations, while handling drastically more information requests and recounts,” Adam Hinds, former Massachusetts state senator and current CEO of the nonprofit Edward M. Kennedy Institute, tells WIRED. “One problem is they are already stretched in terms of funding and resources. As election administration receives more attention, our election workers deserve the resources necessary.”
