Hi Pia, I hope you’re well. Please feel free to ignore this if it’s too personal... but how do you deal with death as a concept when you have the chronic illnesses that you do? Are you afraid to die, and if you are, how do you keep from constantly thinking about how you could die early (so to speak) if your health takes a turn? I’ve had a lot of health scares recently and it’s getting harder and harder to just live without feeling constantly afraid. Thank you for everything you do.

Firstly, I am very sorry to hear about your health scares. They suuuuuck. They really suck. I’m replying partly out of solidarity, but I don’t know if I have anything that will really work for you, because sometimes I really struggle to find things that work for me, but I’m happy to share what I’ve picked up along the way. <3 And I hope in the meantime that things pick up for you.
The timing of this is pretty spot on, in that I’m going through pretty serious scanxiety at the moment (what we call ‘anxiety around getting scans for cancer’ in my cancer support group that I’m a member of). I had a full body PET scan two weeks ago (no results yet), and I have a head/neck MRI on Friday, for which I can hopefully get the results Mon/Tuesday. But I don’t have my follow up with my Endocrinologist until late July, so I won’t know for about 6 weeks if I have any new tumours in my abdomen.
I definitely don’t want to die from this disease, and it will probably be the thing that kills me. Not any time soon, that’s less likely, but it’s just...likely overall. A lot of the statistics are stacked against me, I have three primary tumours in my head/neck, and there’s no indication that my body is going to stop growing them, and there’s no cure and likely to be no cure in my lifetime.
So yeah, I get anxious. I am afraid to die (I mean in general, unless I’m suicidal, but also specifically the way this disease is likely to kill me: progressively taking my hearing, my ability to swallow and talk, my ability to move my arms and my head and my neck, my sense of balance and ability to walk upright without collapsing, and more - which doesn’t even count metastatic disease - is a horrible way to die). And I live with the knowledge that like, it literally takes one scan result to change my entire life all over again (hence, scanxiety).
BUT, living in constant fear is just...not helpful. It’s understandable, it is an understandable emotional response, but it’s not a helpful response. Because what matters most in these scenarios is quality of life; and you get quality of life (in chronic illness and acute disease) by managing emotional outcomes as vigilantly and with as much self-compassion (and patience) as possible. So these are the things that work for me, if they don’t work for you, that’s fine, some might even feel completely wrong for you, that’s also fine and normal. The things we tell ourselves to cope in this are deeply personal. I hate the phrase ‘fuck cancer’ for example, other people who have cancer use it as a battle cry and feel strong because of it.

* ‘Can I literally do anything more than I’m doing to change the outcomes of my illness without hurting myself? No? Then admit you have no control over this and let it go.’ This is something I tell myself when I start panicking. ‘But what if I get this result what if this happens what if this tumour starts growing again what if.’ I just look at myself sternly and say: ‘HOW is this helpful?’ It’s NOT. Knowing the answers to any of those what ifs changes nothing in the moment except my anxiety, distress and fear levels. And then I say ‘so WHAT would be helpful? What do you have control over?’ And then I might wait and think... ‘well...I really like that Youtube channel One Meal A Day I might watch one of those videos’ or ‘well...I might journal about my feelings and give them some space (see further down) and then try and let them go because just cycling around them isn’t productive.’ Sometimes we hang onto anxiety because our brain convinces us it will somehow be helpful. With this stuff it rarely is.
* WORRY TIME. Yay worry time! Set aside 5-20 minutes a day (or every three days, or once a week, but you might need to start with once a day when things are really bad) to write down ALL of your worries about your illnesses. All the irrational things, the logical things, ALL of it, no matter how embarrassing. And omg, chase those worries down. Really sit and be with your worry. Give it space. Let it speak! But do it with the intention that once those 5-20 minutes are over, that’s it. You’re done. If your worries start up again, say gently to yourself: ‘You told me all of this during Worry Time, but if this is new, please save it for tomorrow, I will give you space to share with me then!’ Treat your worry like a little animal that doesn’t know any better, and has to be taught some boundaries. Worry Time becomes the boundary. That doesn’t mean you won’t feel anxious the rest of the time, just if you do, it’s easier to step back mindfully and go ‘huh, I’m anxious right now, that’s really interesting, but I’m going to do something about that tomorrow, and so for now I’m just going to acknowledge it but I’m going to try not to let it ruin my day.’
* ‘Everything right now, this moment, this second is exactly the way it should be.’ This is Taoism, and some people hate it. I use this most often when I’m in excruciating pain, or terrified, or literally in a panic attack. I don’t know why it helps so much, but it does. And I think it’s because it works like this: ‘Everything right now, this moment, this second is exactly the way it should be. Terrible things are happening all over the world. Other people are feeling pain like I am. Animals and plants go on living and dying. Right now everything in this moment is perfect messy imperfection and I am a part of that, a small cog in a huge ecosystem. I am a part of something, I belong in this, and I hate it - I really hate it - but even that is part of that messy imperfection. It just is. And therefore, I can release any attachment or urgency to change the things that I cannot change.’ And then...I will still be in pain, or having a panic attack, or terrified, but it will feel integrated and connected to me. It will feel like it’s a part of something. Still, ultimately, sometimes useless but...even useless excesses of terror are a part of the messy imperfection of life.
This leads onto the second:
* ‘In this moment, I am okay.’ Not like, literally 100% healthy. I’ll never be that. But I’m okay. I’m okay as a person and a human being who deserves love and comfort, and I’m okay to just grab another minute to feel okay. You can pair this with mindfulness meditation, and Smiling Mind has a great free app, and most of the meditations are between 5-8 minutes long. Sometimes ‘I’m okay’ doesn’t mean ‘I feel okay’ - and that’s okay too! I’m not trying to erase my emotions, I’m not trying to make myself never feel afraid of dying, that is an appropriate response to something that literally threatens my life but isn’t doing it urgently right this second. And because it’s not doing it right this second, well, right this second, I’m okay.
* Goals that have nothing to do with your health. For me, probably pretty obviously, it’s my writing and my art and similar. I have responsibilities towards my loved ones and my animal companions. Sometimes just...putting my head down and getting stuff done helps take my mind off things, and that also makes me feel productive and like I’m more than my illnesses. Socialising is a part of this. You are so much more than your illnesses, but you have to live that way too, that’s your responsibility to yourself, to remember that you are more, and then to embrace that in your actions (I mean, keeping in mind spoons/energy levels), even when you’re not always feeling it.
* Look at the things you can control and shore them up where you can. Like, consider writing a will. One of the things I’ve had to do is consider what I’ll do if I get sick so quickly I can never finish Fae Tales or never write anything again. These practical steps can be distressing, but sometimes they can answer background anxieties you didn’t know you had, and put them to bed. ‘I don’t need to worry about this, I’ve already done this part.’ Sometimes it’s just knowing that every time you see a specialist, you’re going to write down your questions, so you no longer need to worry about forgetting them. Things like that seem little, but they add up as background anxieties we do have control over.
* If you can afford it; Therapy. Depending on your illness/es, there may be support groups. Some are dodgy as shit (Fibromyalgia groups have categorically been the worst spaces I’ve ever encountered for genuine support), but generally speaking for serious illnesses, there are support groups. They can be an incredible resource. I help moderate the Australian/New Zealand Para/Pheo Support Group (there’s only one, lol), and like sometimes it’s depressing (people I care about do, on occasion, die), but knowing I’m not alone, knowing I can get advice about what to ask my surgeons or my Endocrinologists or Oncologists, especially for a rare disease? Fuck that’s so invaluable. And being able to help other people advocate for themselves has been really empowering for me.
* Don’t expect to get rid of your fear or anxiety entirely. If you’re alive and you’re human and you like life, you just can’t do that. So remember that when you’re feeling those things, you’re being a normal human being, and you are not alone (even when you feel like the loneliest person in the world, even that’s a part of it). It won’t fix those things, sometimes you can’t. Some days I just give as like, shit days, it happens. June I’ve given up as kind of a shit month honestly. Am I having good moments? Yes. Am I stressed every day about this disease? YES! Fun times. (I won’t be stressed every day if the scan results show that everything is the same tbh, like, then I’ll go back to ‘normal’ where I rarely think about it).
* Don’t write off the day until the day is over. I used to have this habit (and still can sometimes) of writing off the day as being ‘a bad day’ because of a terrible morning. I actually started this habit as a child, because of trauma and abuse, and it was something I kept doing because of mental illness. So this is something I was doing long before cancer came along and additionally kicked my ass. These days, even though I feel so bad sometimes I feel like hell, my entire life is a write off, I try and keep in mind that one thing can change the tone of the day and make it better. And that ‘thing’ can be me and my choices. And the fact is, even if I try some Youtube videos, or to pet my cats, or talk to friends, or whatever and it doesn’t work, at least I can look back and reassure myself: ‘You’re trying so hard, you’re really trying your best’ and also ‘you know this never lasts, it never has, you still have moments where you feel good, which means you’ll have a moment where you’ll feel good again. It’s okay. I’m okay.’
* Dark humour can be a saviour. Oh boy, can it ever. But be careful who you share it with.
* Gratitude for what you have now, and not what you might not in the future, because the future is an illusion, it’s not here now. But you are. I have a journal where I write down something I’m grateful for every day. Even if I’m feeling cynical and hateful and anxious and bitter. And then I might just say ‘I’m grateful for chips’ or ‘I’m grateful for that nice leaf I saw but nothing else’ lol. Just something. I’m grateful I can still hear, I might not hear one day, but I’m listening to a song right now. That matters. I’m grateful I can walk. I’m grateful I can read this post. I’m grateful I can still write my books despite the mild cognitive brain damage I got from radiation. My gratitude doesn’t always feel warm or nice, but I am still, somewhere, deep down, glad I haven’t lost those things.

It’s hard, and many of these things take time to learn, and repetition, and getting back on the wagon when you forget. Some days they won’t help, and some days you’ll be so glad of one 5 minute mindfulness meditation it saves the whole rest of the day for you. Sometimes sleeping is a really good reset tool for the brain.
Some people find Buddhism helpful (all life is suffering can become pretty zen when you’re suffering), I found the philosophy of Taoism helpful on top of my regular paganism.
ANYWAY this post is now...2,200 words long fuck that’s longer than some of my university essays I’M SO SORRY so I’m going to stop. Just, please anon, from the bottom of my heart, be gentle with yourself. It’s hard. This stuff is hard. It requires an unfair amount of effort to make it less hard, but that’s all life gives us, because life never promised to be fair or just or compassionate to us. So we must be fair and just and compassionate to ourselves. And that, in its messy imperfection, is all we can do to be a perfect part of this world. <3

“When Fives is killed, his essence refuses to become one with the force, instead, searching out the easiest sentient being to attach itself to. After years working beneath Palpatine, Fox has had his mental shields completely eroded and his defences completely shattered, making him the perfect person for Fives’ essence to transfer into. The two of them must figure out how all this strange ‘jedi stuff’ works and how they can both coexist long enough to save their brothers and if they’re lucky, perhaps the rest of the galaxy too.”

Fives was struggling to keep his breathing calm as he began fretfully pacing the small length of his assigned quarters. He could feel his nails digging into the soft flesh of his forearms as he clutched at them with a white-knuckle grip, creating little moon shaped indents along his skin even through the thick material of his blacks. Panicking over a situation went against everything he had been trained for during even the earliest stages of ARC training, but recently it felt as though those months of work had been thrown completely out of the window.  
Losing his mind and making rash decisions would be a terrible mistake – the events of the last rotation had been a perfect example of that – but there were only so many scenarios that Fives had been trained to handle, even with how he had been encouraged to regularly think outside of the box and use more unorthodox approaches. What to do when randomly waking up in someone else’s skin was certainly not on the general training curriculum  
Deep breaths. Take stock of the situation. Come up with a goal. Design a plan to reach said goal.
On flimsi it sounded easy enough, but Fives was struggling to complete the first step successfully, and he was beginning to have serious doubts about managing to deal with the situation. Though giving up in the face of difficulty had never been in the trooper’s nature, and so with a deep breath Fives managed to force himself to cease his pointless pacing. He took a moment to close his eyes, feeling each breath as it entered his nose and exited through his mouth. Breathing in fresh, cool air that soothed all the way down his throat, and exhaling breaths laced with all his worry and fear, carrying away the negative emotions so that his mind could be clear and logical.  
When Fives opened his eyes again he refused to look at his reflection, switching off the refresher light so that he wouldn’t have to keep accidentally seeing his appearance and becoming any more distracted than he already was. He seemed to unconsciously gravitate towards the cot in the corner of the room, sinking down onto the firm mattress, sighing heavily as his body once again reminded him of just how exhausted he was.  
As attractive as it sounded to be back in his own bunk, surrounded by his snoring brothers all safe and sound, he wasn’t about to try and make another escape attempt, not after having already just spent hours on the run from the Guard. Then there was of course also the issue of Fives’ commandeered body, who exactly it belonged to, and if it was possible to give it back to them. He knew he couldn’t trust the Corrie brothers to help him, and apparently Captain Rex wasn’t pleased with whoever he was now body sharing with.  
It wasn’t as though he could simply tell them what had happened to him either, for they would undoubtedly think he had gone mad, and Fives was far from eager to be shipped off back to Kamino to give the doctors a second attempt at wiping his mind. So it seemed that until he could come up with some indisputable proof of who he really was, he would have to try his best to lay low and draw as little attention to himself as possible.  
Ensuring that he distances himself from the rest of his brothers would be a challenge, but he was sure that he could come up with some excellent excuses for any odd behaviour, he was an expert liar after all. The 501st would likely be getting deployed again within the next few days, so he knew he wouldn’t be bothered by any of his closer brothers, and Captain Rex and General Skywalker would likely be spending their short leave time at the base and the Jedi temple respectively.  
Keeping away from the Chancellor would be simple – the man only interacted with people of importance or high rank, and Fives was certain he didn’t qualify as either – as far as he had heard, only the Guard commanders regularly spent time around him and he was certain that he hadn’t recognized the body he’d seen in the mirror, so it was unlikely he was anyone of importance. There had been several Coruscant Guard members that had come to the warehouse to arrest him, but judging by the fact he had been led to the officer quarters he was likely using the body of some sergeant or captain.  
He had no idea what routines the Guards usually kept to, but with any luck he would have some sort of superior to report to, and from there he could figure out some way to get a hold of a roster or mission details. With any luck he would have enough down time to try and find some clues as to what had happened to him, or at least something to help prove his identity. The thought of attempting to contact the Jedi briefly crossed his mind, but the memory of General Skywalker’s reaction to his earlier behaviour still left a rather bitter taste of betrayal heavy in his mouth, and he quickly pushed aside the notion, deciding that his first goal would be to try and gain the support of his fellow brothers before speaking to anyone further along in the command chain.  
With his goal in mind, and his body begging for rest, Fives dropped down onto the cot, feeling all the tension in his body bleed out as he sunk into the material of the mattress. He was about to finally concede defeat and drift off when a soft pinging sound came from the datapad perched on the table beside his bed. Curious, he dragged the padd closer to him, holding it up above his head to quickly scan over the message sent to him.  
The message was sent from a CC-2224, and after a few moment digging through his memory, Fives was able to recall it was Commander Cody’s designation. The message was Cody demanding that he tell him what had happened earlier that evening, and Fives could practically feel the irritation radiating from the text when Cody added that Rex was completely beside himself and that apparently it was all his fault that their vod’ika was so distressed. Fives was briefly taken aback by someone referring to Rex as their vod’ika, and had to quickly remind himself that yes, Cody probably would view Rex that way considering he was the elder clone in their relationship.  
Fives wanted to reply to the message straight away, his very bones practically shouting that he couldn’t just ignore a question from his superior, but he wasn’t entirely sure himself what had happened, and spreading misinformation would likely not help his situation. Until the ARC was certain about what had transpired in the warehouse he would have to pretend he hadn’t yet seen the message and pray to the Maker that Cody was too busy to comm him for answers.  
Scrolling a little further up the conversation, he saw that his own designation was set as CC-1010, confirming that his body was that of either a commander or captain. Unfortunately, he couldn’t quite remember anyone with that specific number – he never really bothered to remember the numerical designations of anyone other than his closest brothers in case he ever had to write up a report detailing the deceased – the GAR didn’t care for the names of the clones serving them, only noting their number for ease of recording.  
Switching off the datapad screen, Fives placed the device back on the table, stretching out on his temporary bed with a rather large yawn. His eyes were refusing to focus on anything and his eyelids were beginning to droop, so knowing that he would likely have quite a stressful day when he woke, he was quick to wriggle into a slightly more comfortable position. He hadn’t been bothered to switch off the overhead lights, but that seemed not to matter, for he was quick to drop off to sleep.  
Although it was easy for him to get to sleep, Fives found himself tossing and turning the entire night, his head swimming and refusing to let him get too comfortable. He was too used to needing to sleep lightly for him to be able to fully relax, at least not without someone keeping watch or laying beside him, so he wasn’t entirely surprised when he woke still feeling slightly groggy. For a moment he wondered what he’d been woken by, before his thoughts were interrupted by the soft sound of knocking.  
Quickly rolling from the cot and to his feet, Fives took a second to give a large stretch before pressing the keypad to unlock the door, watching as it slid open to reveal a clone in fresh white armour. The shiny straightened to attention, moving their arm to perform a salute before seeming to realise that they couldn’t do so while weighed down by the pile of crimson armour held within their grasp. “Good morning, sir,” he greeted, voice wavering slightly, but still sounding far too chipper for someone awake at such an ungodly hour, “I was sent by one of the medics to return your armour to you, sir, they forgot to give it to Commander Thire before your both retired.”  
“Uh, yeah, thanks kid,” was all he offered, finally managing to blink the blurriness from his eyes as he moved aside to let the shiny into the room.  
The young clone was quick to place the set of armour neatly in a pile on Fives’ desk before turning back to him once more, “is that all, sir?” he asked, waiting for Fives to offer him a nod and a quiet affirmative, before snapping a brief salute. The shiny pivoted around on his heel and was out of his quarters before Fives even had the chance to blink, leaving him once more alone and slightly miffed that he hadn’t been able to catch the kid���s name.  
Rubbing his face slightly to rid himself of any other lingering exhaustion, Fives walked over to the stack of armour, gingerly lifting up the helmet that sat at the very top of the pile and staring into its visor. A sinking feeling began to steadily grow in his gut as he realised that he recognised the helmet. He had seen the very same visor staring back at him when a blaster bolt had been shot through his chest, and he knew almost for certain who owned it.  
Pushing aside some of the armour pieces, Fives was horrified to find that there was indeed a kama and commander’s pauldron that matched the design of the bucket still in his grasp. He might not have known the identification number, but it was infinitely easier to recognise such a unique armour design.  In his hands sat the helmet of Commander Fox.  
Fives was trapped in the body of his own killer.  
Someone sure had a sick sense of humour, and if they really wanted to torture him then they were certainly doing a good job of it. He silently wondered what exactly he had done in his past life to deserve such a cruel punishment. He wanted to just crawl back into his bunk, hide under his blanket and proceed to wallow in self pity for the next hundred years or so. He knew life was unfair, especially for a clone, but this was an entirely new level of cruel and unjust.  
“You ready yet, Fox?” Fives practically jerked away from the armour when Commander Thire poked his head in through the door that remained still open. Seemingly ignorant of Fives’ response, Thire continued, “I know I said that I’d cleared your schedule for the morning and you’ll probably just be catching up on paperwork, but did you want to join me and the boys for breakfast?”  
Fives wanted to immediately turn him down, but he knew it would likely look rather suspicious if he tried to completely avoid the other Guard members, and the worried yet hopeful look that Thire was subjecting him too made it neigh impossible for him to turn him down. “Sure, vod, just let me finish getting my armour on.” As uncomfortable as it made him to even touch the foreign armour, he had to try and seem natural.  
Luckily for Fives, the commander’s armour had most of the same components as his ARC armour, and if he tried hard enough he could almost pretend that he was wearing his familiar blue plastoid. He left his helmet off for the time being, tucking it under his arm, before moving to join Thire who was stood just outside the doorway in the hall. The Commander gave him a nod and a soft smile, reaching out and gently wrapping an arm around his shoulders.  
“How are you feeling, vod?” Thire’s eyebrows had furrowed in concern, his face looking almost painfully piteous as he looked at Fives. They had slowly started walking, and Fives was careful to pay attention to where they were going so that he could hopefully find his way back to his quarters later.  
Fives gave the Commander a smile, though it felt awkwardly forced, “I’m fine, just a little tired is all.” He was nervous, and praying that the other clone didn’t pick up on it, growing more anxious by the second as Thire’s eyes continued to heavily scrutinize his face for any signs of a lie. He heard the Commander make a soft noise, looking away from him but looking no more convinced than he had been before Fives’ attempt at reassurance.  
“Okay, well, I’m going to be busy all day, but we can chat tonight when we’ve both clocked off, alright?” The Commander gave his shoulder a firm squeeze just as the reached the entrance to the mess, dropping his hand from Fives’ shoulder just before they stepped into the room, ensuring that no one had seen their brief moment of brotherly support. Fives had heard stories of Commander Fox, the brave, confident leader, and so he figured that being seen receiving reassurance for any sort of worry could potentially damage such a reputation.  
It was strange really, because Fives was so used to the openness that Captain Rex usually showed him – sure he wouldn’t completely break down in front of his men, but he was quite happy to both give and receive affection from his men – he personally thought that it made him stronger for being able to do so. He was forced to remind himself that this was the Coruscant Guard, not his buddies from Torrent, and they likely had their own ways of supporting one another, even if it wasn’t quite as open as he was used to.  
Thire led them to a bench off to the side, already half full by the time they reached it. On one side sat sergeant Hound, who was grinning at Commander Stone sat beside him, apparently winning some sort of argument if Stone’s expression was anything to go by. Commander Thorn sat across from them, snickering slightly at the other two as they quietly bickered.  
They all glanced up the moment they caught sight of Fox and Thire, and Thorn quickly scooted down the other end of the table to make room for the two approaching commanders. Hound and Stone had taken a pause in their argument, watching as the other two clones sat down, and Thorn slid two trays and two cups of caff in their direction. “Managed to grab you guys some of the fresh caff before everyone else started fighting over it,” Thorn explained, taking a sip from his own mug.
Thire made a pleased sound as he took a gulp of his own drink, “I don’t think I’d be able to make it through the day if I’d been stuck with that dodgy stuff they keep reheating throughout the day, tastes like gutter water.”  
“Do I want to know how you know what gutter water tastes like?” Stone smirked at Thire, chuckling when the other Commander simply rolled his eyes.  
Fives was happy to listen to the officers ribbing one another, enjoying the moment of familiar, harmless mocking between brothers, as he eagerly tucked into his breakfast, feeling as though he hadn’t eaten in a week. He wasn’t sure if he was happy or not that even in a world where everything seemed to be turning on its head, ration squares still tasted just as bland as always.

Scene: Character being chained to the ceiling, leaving her standing on her tip toes to prevent her from completely relaxing. She was already wounded with minor bruises and cuts, the most serious of which is a broken collar on the left side, the bone didn’t break through the skin. Torturers will apply an electrode? to her right hand / finger on the right hand and which onto a prod. They would touch it over various parts of her body which will cause the broken collar bone to break through the skin
2/3) They will switch to beatings after this point. This is set in the far future but in a frontier setting, it is likely the electric torture rig is crude for the time. My character will be held for 1 - 2 days before being rescued.(3/4) Will the contact point on the body be a electrode? Or what’s the usual method of fixing the first contact point to the victim Will the entry and exit point of the current suffer from severe burns? How big will the wounds be? Will a bit be required to prevent the character’s tongue from being bitten off while being shocked?(4/4) Will my character suffer permanent memory loss of the days of her torture? Or just confusion over those two days but memories slowly coming back to her?
Took me a few readthroughs to understand the scenario but I think I see where you’re going withthis.
 The majority of thequestion seems to be about the damage the electrical torture would cause: thatis really dependant on the electrical source used. It really varies a greatdeal.
 And here’s the thing,we could go into the subtle differencesbetween electrical sources and how torturers have used them (Rejali does thisfor about five chapters) but I think it reaches a point where you have towonder if that detail is necessary. Do you think it adds anything to the storyif the reader knows exactly what sort of electrical source is used? Or thecurrent setting?
 Personally I think thatlevel of concentration on the instruments detracts from the emotional impact ofthis sort of scene.
 So I think this is downto what you choose. How injured doyou want your character to be? Does it serve the story if she gets electricalburns? Does it add anything to the plot or character?
 Those aren’t things Ican answer for you. What I’m going to do is outline two different levels ofinjury that are possible with electrical torture and how they’d work. Go aheadand chose the one that works best for your story. :)
 However the electricityis applied there will always be two electrodes. Both contact points with thevictim are electrodes. Having one attached to her hand and the other applied todifferent parts of the body echoes a lot of real life accounts. What theelectrodes look like and how they can be attached varies a lot. They can justbe a small bit of metal, they can be wires, they can be crocodile clips.
 If you’re not going to choose the result with moreexternal injuries I’d suggest not using crocodile clips. That’s not becausethey’re inherently more dangerous. That sort of clip leaves a telltale patternof red marks with or without electricity. If the torturers have gone to theeffort of trying to reduce marks and scars in other ways then using a crocodileclip doesn’t make much sense.
 The torturers couldwrap wires around her hand, they could attach the electrode with tape or theycould force her to hold it. Usually torturers will do what they think is easiest so thinkabout what sort of thing they might have to hand. String might be unlikely inyour future setting for instance but electrical tape could still be common.
 I'm going to start withthe 'clean' non-scarring scenario.
 In this case theelectrodes might cause some redness, but due to the electrical source used theywon't actually burn the skin. Any redness will fade quickly and be a vaguelysimilar shape to the electrodes. In Taser or stun gun victims these marks (inthe rare occasions when they occur) look a little like insect bites.
 She would spasm whenshocked. She might scream. Biting off her tongue would be a possibility butwould be less likely unless the torturers directly shocked her jaw.
 She might lose controlof her bowels.
 The biggest risk inthis scenario would probably be a heart attack. Repeated electrical shocks fromthese sorts of sources, especially at the front of the chest, can stop theheart. In the time frame you're interested in I think it's realistic for thecharacter unless you've established that she has a heart condition.
 In the scarringscenario things are going to be a little different.
 Scarring electricalimplements can leave burns and blistering where the electrodes contact thevictim's skin. The place that's going to be most at risk is her right handbecause she has one electrode attached to it. That hand will likely suffer theworst burns and that will probably affect her mobility in that hand. Dependingon the position and severity of the burns she might end up getting itamputated.
 Burns over the rest ofher body are going to depend on how long the electrode is in any one particularspot. If the torturers keep shocking particular areas or leave the electrodeson a particular spot for a long time, that area will likely be burned as well.
 I'm a little hazy onhow big the burns usually are. Slightly larger than the electrode itselfappears to be the norm but it's difficult to judge when the electrodes aremoved and applied to different areas or applied repeatedly to the same area.
 In this sort of set upmuscles locking suddenly, contracting as hard as they can repeatedly andviolently, would happen. This can happen throughout the entire body and in somedevices it was hard enough to break bones, the jaw is especially prone tobreaking. And that means that she would be at higher risk of biting off hertongue and a bit of some variety would probably be used. The main reference Ihave to this type of device comes from Rejali and in the only case he quotesthat mentions specifically what the bit was it was a wooden stick.
 Alleg wasn't torturedusing this sort of electrical device but he was gagged with his own shirt whichwould come with a higher risk of choking.
 With musclecontractions this violent her collar bone tearing through her skin would happenmuch sooner than in the non-scarring scenario. If the torturers stop usingelectricity because of this then that probably means less shocks. Even withless shocks there’d likely be a lot of very visible damage especially to thehand the electrode is attached to. But less shocks overall would reduce thenumber and size of burns over the rest of her body.
 If you do go this routeI’d strongly recommend consulting ScriptMedic’s burns tag and looking upelectrical burns. It’s also worth remembering that burns are very painfulthroughout the healing process and can remain painful even when fully healed.
 The memory problemscaused by torture are a different issue entirely. Unless she’s shocked directlyto the head (which I suggest you avoid) any memory loss she experiences won’tbe because of the electricity. Torture in general causes memory problemsregardless of the type of torture used.
 Usually those memoryproblems don’t mean forgetting thetorture. This can happen, but it’snot common compared to other memory problems. So I’m going to start by goingover more common issues (note that not all of these will happen to everyone).
 Memory problemssurrounding torture can be thought of as belonging to three main types-intrusive memories, memory loss and inaccurate memories.
 Intrusive memories are persistent,vivid memories of traumatic events. In torture victims this usually meansreliving memories of torture over and over again. It means that virtuallyeverything can remind the survivor of being tortured or start them thinkingabout being tortured. It’s extremely distressing and a particular feature ofPTSD.
 The vividness and persistenceof the memory doesn’t mean it’s accurate though. This does not mean thattorture victims ‘make it up’ or ‘exaggerate’, what it means is that traumaaffects our ability to remember things and as a result there are usuallyinaccuracies in a victim’s memory.
 In the case of a short,one-off attack a common way this manifests is inability to identify theattacker. It can also mean identifying the wrongperson as the attacker and being extremely sure they are correct.
 It can also manifest inother ways, with inaccuracies in descriptions of the place they were tortured,the way it was carried out or the order in which things happened, for example.A victim might also get details wrong, saying a door to a room was on the leftside instead of the right for instance.
 Memory loss is alwaysof recent memories. Older memories, such as those of childhood or the victim’sname are not lost under torture. The memories that go are generally the ones thatwere shortly before and shortly after torture. So far as I know this memoryloss is permanent.
 But there are othersorts of memory loss associated with torture and trauma survivors. Whenimmediately experiencing torture a victim may forget things that they laterremember: being in pain has a detrimental effect on memory. I get theimpression that’s not what you’re talking about here though; the question seemsto be about what she’d experience after torture.
 In which case one ofthe most relevant types of memory loss is a sort of general forgetfulness thatsurvivors can experience. This is a little broad and difficult to define but itcan negatively impact almost every aspect of a survivor’s life. It makes keepingappointments more difficult. Basic self-care can be more difficult (ie how longhas that meal been in the oven? Where are the keys? Were those bills paid?).Learning new skills is more difficult and remember things like course material isnoticeably more difficult than it was before.
 Losing memories aboutbeing tortured can occur. It can be permanent,in some cases people do ‘regain’ memories lost to trauma. But it’s difficult tosay whether later ‘remembering’ of a traumatic event would be accurate. Issueswith inaccuracies in memory still apply and just because a survivor feels that something is accurate doesnot necessarily mean it is.
 If you’re wedded tothis scenario and this sort of memory loss I’d advise that she only loses asmall portion of her memory of torture. It would be very rare for her to loseher memory of the entire incident when it’s this long. She might, for example,not remember the moment her collar bone came through her skin, or she might notremember the torturers taking her down from the restraints, or putting her intothem.
 Forgetting the entireincident would be unrealistic but forgetting short moments within the overallattack does happen. She might assume she passed out and was briefly unconsciousfor those moments.
 She probably wouldn’trecover those memories but she could convince herself that she has if shestarts to obsess over them and thinks about them a lot. Which is certainlypossible. Memory problems are extremely distressing for survivors and I thinkthey’re one of the most ignored symptoms in fiction.
 Whatever you decide todo regarding memory loss I’d suggest trying to include another broader memory problem.Perhaps some inaccuracies in her memory of torture, or difficulty identifying hertorturers’ faces, or general forgetfulness after the attack that she findsfrustrating.
 You should probablyalso take a look at my Masterposton the common effects of torture if you haven’t already. She’s likely toexperience more than memory problems, though which other symptoms you chose togive her is entirely up to you. I generally suggest picking things that fit thecharacter and story.

Psychokinetic Levitation
The only ability Duff really has; he can move and levitate objects not attached to the ground and move them around with his mind. The lighter and smaller the object, the easier Duff can move and the more he can move. If the object is large and heavy, it will require more focus to move it and may not lift high off the ground. Duff needs to be able to see the object in order to move it. The only exception is himself, which has taken several years to master. He can also propel smaller object at higher speeds; but only enough to at best inflict minor scratches and bruising. Objects too heavy for Duff to move can induce headaches, or even knock him out.
Passive Telepathy
Unlike other psychics which can read minds and understand people’s thought, Duff can read people’s emotions and get an idea of what they are feeling at a moment. Unlike his Levitation ability, Duff does not need to see the person and can sense emotions at a relatively good radius (about 1 km). He uses this mainly to pick up on when people are in danger by picking up on the most distressed emotions and following them until it’s at its strongest point.

Not an actual power; he just has some training using guns. Specifically, long-range weaponry such as snipers. His weapon is currently fitted to fire rubber bullets so he can’t kill people, just injure them should there be no other weaponry/tools around to use.

Deadpan and calm, Duff is usually relaxed and laidback. As the extent of his abilities have spread so that objects once heavy to him as a kid are now easy to move, a lot of the work he does he’ll use his mind- when no one is looking of course. He has no big drive to go forwards in life and settles for what’s easy- an attitude that once influenced his prior theft and still permeates in the way he behaves today. Though now aware that theft, injury and hurting others are wrong- he also lacks some scruples on hurting people who do break crimes though usually the less violent and easier the criminal is to handle, the less likely Duff is to try violence as a means for a resolution. If the villain is tough or aggravating Duff however, he’s willing to fall back to violence- typically lifting the villain and tossing them around or using small, but heavy objects to hit them with.
Though wanting to be a big, well known hero Duff prefers to try and keep his personal and “hero” life as far apart as possible. For Duff he does this primarily by treating his position as a Cosmic Defender as “the real job” and his small job as a repairman as the “side job”. He’s relaxed when out of costume and is quite serious when in costume. This also means Duff is somewhat desperate to show that “Corax” is more than just an ex-sidekick and can get very upset should others poke fun or degrade him. In fact, Duff hates his prior alias, “Lad Wonder” and will likely- should the person be a villain, go right to violence if they dare bring it up. The worst villains, the ones that should really upset him or commit serious crimes, tend to get his “worst treatment” which often involves tossing them around high in the sky.
Additional Info:
Duff grew up knowing he could levitate objects since he was five. When he reached seven, he chose to keep it secret, deciding to use his powers for his own needs.
Duff’s parents at the time were young and not looking to have kids, so they put him up for adoption. Duff flowed place to place, never really having a permanent home.
Around age eleven Duff was caught by Cosmic Defender Ms. Magnificent, a powerful psychic hero, when he was pick-pocketing money from people in a crowd after a big fight using his levitation skills. Rather than report the wayward kid, the Hero opted to take Duff in to train him to be a hero. He took on the alias Lad Wonder.
Initially believing he could potentially grow up to be a hero, he worked with Ms. Magnificent for a few years. He learned how to levitate his own body and fly, but unlike Mr. Magnificent his powers were limited to just levitation and passive telepathy.
When Duff turned 18 he chose to leave, deciding to pursue his own super hero career. He tried for a few years but found that beyond picking up petty robbers and non-superpowered thugs to carry them to police or stop their weapons, he was not the best at handling more powered-up villains. Annoyed with the limitation, Duff began to focus less on trying to be careful and getting the job done and took a brief break to train his mind. He also began to pick up on using armed weaponry despite his mentor’s protests.
3 months before Duff’s 24th birthday, Ms. Magnificent informed him that she was leaving to deal with a mission in deep space regarding alien refugees in need of help. She asked him to keep an eye out for trouble while she would be gone.
6 months later and Duff (now taking on a new name; Corax) has been defending his home city and the criminals that dwell in it. Without Ms. Magnificent and other powerful heroes to keep him in check, he has gradually moved to more violent means of dealing with villains using his levitation abilities which have grown stronger over time.
Some talk also has spread that Duff is tempted to switch from rubber bullets to real weaponry.
When confronted about hurting criminals, Duff usually explains that he never actually leaves them permanently injured and justifies that it’s fine, as long as they come out of it alive.
Was once fit and muscular as Lad Wonder, but having pushed his levitation skill to a point where he doesn’t need to do much, he’s grown lazy (physically) and sustains himself mainly on takeout from his less-than well paying job.
