Doing dishes is definitely gross but sometimes I don't have a choice but to do it. The sponge has to be changed regularly tho because there's no way I'm touching that icky-looking sponge. There are certain jewelries that makes me feel claustrophobic (watches, bracelet). Rings however are like sensory toys. And I totally avoid swings and anything related to it that makes me dizzy.
(not my photo) . Struggling pretty hard in the mental health department tonight, since Angel left. I have so much venting to do, so much anger, and so many feelings that I just don't have words for... . I'm going to watch old Scooby-Doo movies and try to sleep. . #MentalIllness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #insomnia #painsomnian#pwin #chronicillness #chronicpain #scoobydoo #sensoryseeking #sensory #depressed #stressed #lonely #eds #ehlersdanlos #ehlersdanlossyndrome #POTS #MCAS https://www.instagram.com/p/CkutrvEue00/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
"If you've told a child a thousand times, and the child still has not learned, then it is not the child who is the slow learner." - Walter Barbe 1977
When there's an underlying condition that has not been identified and needs are therefore unmet, you can tell a child the same thing a million times and their behavior won't change.
What WILL change their behavior is understanding the root cause and figuring out strategies that will address their underlying unmet needs... then, helping them apply those strategies.
But getting upset because they "aren't listening" is unproductive and will likely lead to increased frustration all around.
Also, as they say... insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
sensory seeking is a form of self-regulation where we seek stimulation and sensory input and we should never stop someone from seeking sensory input.
turns out I'm a huge sensory seeker when it comes to certain sensory input so I wanted to share what sensory seeking as an adult looks like for me:
smoking cigarettes
eating crunchy foods
listening to music really loudly
tight hugs
enjoying fizzy soft drinks
eating salt and vinegar chips
repetitive movements like rocking back and forth
making lots of noise
seeking out specific scents
enjoying dancing at clubs and pubs
scrolling on your phone
needing background noise
lots of heavy blankets
honestly though I love fizzy soft drinks like there's nothing more satisfying than the burn of carbonated beverages down my throat 😅
I also never realised that always needing background noise was a form of sensory seeking to the oiunt that I prefer to live on a busy road with continuous traffic!
friendly reminder that it's totally possible to be a sensory seeker with some senses and be sensory avoidant with other senses 🌈
Took the little ones for a walk after school and went to the park. Lots of fab park equipment, but they both wanted to play on this homemade tree swing! 🤣 . #sensoryseeking #sensoryseeker #sensorystimulation #spiritedchild #raisingmyspiritedchild #parenting #adoption #family #famille #familia #familie #park #parklife #play #playoutside #playoutdoors #outdoorplay https://www.instagram.com/p/CoFwpJIsB1a/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Added new shirts to the shop. These are especially close to the heart for us with all of Emma’s diagnoses. We have to advocate and fight tooth and nail to ensure she is getting everything she needs to thrive and be the happy baby she is. I may or may not wear these shirts to her appointments because this mommy doesn’t have time for games or the run-around! #advocate #advocatelikeamother #ilovemyspdwarrior #caffeinateandadvocate #specialneedsmom #specialneedsparent #spd #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryseeking #sensoryavoider #developmentallydelayed #visuallyimpaired #ehtmdesigns #customshirts #specialneedsshirt #spdshirt #sensoryprocessingdisordershirt #sensoryprocessingdisorderawareness #specialneedsshop https://www.instagram.com/p/B1HyP4KASLO/?igshid=1gv32lloaesfa
Yes, this is the original admin of Sensoryseeker. I had lost the blog a few years ago after I took a break. But now that the url is back, we're back in business!
Sharing some play ideas as a #musictherapistmom. When I was an intern in an adult disability facility in Brisbane, I came to know about the #multisensoryroom and it was WOW! It costs a bomb 💣 and I always wonder if I can create a similar set up in my music sessions. And Yes- actually I do! Music is sensorial and that’s when I like to pair up soft music while dimming the lights or pairing it up with laser at the end of a session. If you’re a teacher/ parents who have been to classes and seen soft music pairing up with lights, now you understand it’s function. It’s a calming strategy towards the end of a very energetic music class! Some backgrounds: I have chosen a profession that embrace #neurodiversity and the more I learn the more I believe that EVERYONE including you and me could have different types of #sensoryneeds. You may be a #sensoryseeker or a #sensoryavoider. That understanding has led me to believe that there is No Bad Kids, but just kids whose sensory needs are not met. Only if our sensory needs are satisfied, then we reach an equilibrium, that’s when learning takes place. So I have decided to set up a light table at home and see what effects it has on the children. It was fun to observe the different ways of explorations my 1, 4 and 7 years old have. We used that towards the end of the day to wind down the day. To add more magic to it, I selected a playlist that I like to listen to 😁 cos it’s not always about the kids, but it’s good #selfcare for the parents too!
