Mission Time.

The private aircraft cut through the night sky like a blade, its engines humming beneath the tense silence shared by the elite sorcerers onboard. You and Suguru sat in the secured forward lounge—lights dimmed, seats lined in reinforced leather, every corner layered in jujutsu-enhanced barriers.

It was a high-profile mission. One of the ancient jujutsu families, long hidden within Tokyo’s oldest bloodlines, had requested direct protection during their discreet relocation to America. The stakes were beyond political—whispers of curses following their bloodline had surfaced, and it was clear someone wanted them wiped out before they could reach safety.

The family rested in their private quarters mid-cabin, their children curled up on silk sofas, unaware of the weight their legacy carried. You and Suguru were stationed in the adjoining lounge, granted a momentary reprieve. But your guard was never down—not even here.

Outside the aircraft, Suguru’s massive flying curse soared like a shadow in the clouds, its form serpentine and majestic—an armored dragon wreathed in violet mist. It circled the plane in steady patterns, warding off any threat before it could come close enough to try. Its eyes glowed faintly as it watched the skies with inhuman precision, tethered to Suguru’s will and fiercely loyal.

Inside, your body was exhausted. You’d been switching shifts—taking turns watching and resting. You hadn’t meant to fall asleep on your last break, but the adrenaline crash was inevitable.

Suguru had noticed the moment your head dipped. He didn’t say anything, just stood, pulled a blanket from the side compartment, and draped it over you. But when your body shivered—more from the cold air and the residual tension in your muscles than the temperature—he eased down beside you.

You stirred faintly as he gathered you against him, your body curling naturally into the cradle of his frame. His arms wrapped around you without hesitation, firm and reassuring, pulling the blanket tighter around your shoulders. You nuzzled instinctively into the warmth of his chest, the faint scent of sandalwood and something uniquely him grounding you even in sleep.

It should have been the other way around—you, shielding the family with your elemental wards, alert and calculating. But in this moment, he held you as if you were the precious cargo being escorted to safety.

His fingers absently brushed your back, slow and protective, even as his eyes remained sharp and locked on the reinforced windows. The soft rumble of his curse outside gave him confirmation—nothing hostile had approached. Not yet.

You breathed deeply in your sleep, and his grip around you tightened just a little. If anything did dare try, they wouldn’t reach you. Not through him.

The jet touched down on the private tarmac with a soft thud, wheels kissing the concrete beneath the veil of early dawn. The family had been instructed to remain seated while the crew began unloading discreetly—but your instincts screamed before the engines even fully powered down.

A shift in the cursed energy outside. Malevolent. Familiar, yet twisted.

You locked eyes with Suguru instantly. He was already on his feet, curse orb summoned and pulsing with raw energy. His Rainbow Dragon swooped low over the runway, releasing a deep, guttural snarl before circling the perimeter—an airborne sentinel ready to strike.

The aircraft door cracked open—and chaos erupted.

From the shadows of the hangar, a cursed user stepped forward, shrouded in a thick veil of black cursed energy. His face was hidden behind a bone-white mask, voice low and venomous as he snarled, “That family dies tonight.”

Dozens of underlings surged behind him—each radiating twisted energy and carrying cursed blades. It wasn’t just a hit. It was an ambush.

You sprang into action.

“Move!” you barked, throwing up a barrier of whipping wind around the family. The elemental shield circled them tightly as you directed the private guard to get them to the secondary transport. Fire erupted from your fingertips, searing the closest two attackers with blinding speed. You spun, shifting to water, dragging a pillar of moisture from the air and slamming it down onto another cursed user mid-leap.

Suguru was already in motion.

The enemy leader raised a grotesque cursed weapon, expecting Suguru to hide behind his arsenal of curses. He didn’t.

Suguru closed the distance in seconds, catching the man off-guard. One punch to the ribs made the masked user reel. A second—clean, brutal—shattered the mask. The cursed user tried to channel energy, but Suguru was faster. No incantations. No theatrics.

Just a surge of pure, precise, terrifying hand-to-hand mastery.

A brutal elbow to the neck. A cursed-enhanced palm to the chest. And finally, a twisting movement as Suguru summoned a curse mid-motion—a serpent-like spirit coiling around the man's body, crushing him in one blinding strike.

The enemy's scream was cut short as the serpent's jaw snapped down—ending him instantly.

The rest of the attackers fell in succession—some to your elemental wrath, others to Suguru’s curse spirits. The air was thick with smoke, ash, and silence.

Just then, headlights beamed through the mist. Another vehicle screeched to a halt outside the hangar, followed by the slam of car doors. A tall, striking woman with long blonde hair stepped forward, slinging a massive curse tool over her shoulder like it weighed nothing.

Yuki Tsukumo.

Her team of Grade 1 sorcerers fanned out behind her, already scanning the scene.

“Well, well,” she said with a sly grin. “Looks like we missed all the fun.”

Suguru gave a small nod. “Left you the clean-up.”

Yuki approached, stepping over a scorched attacker without blinking. Then her eyes landed on Suguru, and her grin widened.

“I heard you were back in the field. You’re still as devastatingly pretty as I remember.”

You blinked. Excuse me?

Suguru, ever composed, only chuckled politely. “Good to see you too, Yuki.”

You felt your jaw tighten as Yuki closed the distance even more, flicking her eyes toward you for the briefest moment before giving Geto a playful once-over. “You know, if you ever get tired of playing bodyguard, I’ve got a few missions we could... partner on.”

Your eye twitched.

Suguru caught the shift in your expression and smoothly stepped back to your side, placing a hand on the small of your back. “Maybe next time,” he replied coolly. “I already have a partner.”

Yuki’s gaze drifted from Suguru to you, her trademark smirk still lingering. “So you’re the one I’ve been hearing about.”

You crossed your arms, arching a brow. “Hopefully only the good stuff.”

She chuckled, adjusting the massive cursed tool on her back. “Name’s Yuki Tsukumo. Special Grade. One of the few who can take on a mission like this solo. But I’m guessing you already knew that.”

You nodded, but she wasn’t done.

“And you…” Her eyes swept over you with open appraisal. “Complete elemental affinity. They’ve started calling you the ‘Primordial Vessel,’ huh?”

You scoffed lightly. “That one’s new.”

“I like it. Elegant. Deadly. Suits you.” She shot a glance at Suguru. “Honestly, if it wasn’t you two, this family would’ve never made it past the tarmac. But let me guess—”

“They insisted,” you cut in, voice sharp. “Suguru is one of the few who could’ve handled this alone. But no—rich, scared, and picky. They threw their money around and demanded two of the best from Tokyo.”

You shook your head. “They wanted someone who could protect an aircraft with a flying cursed spirit,” you motioned toward Suguru, “and someone who could create an elemental barrier strong enough to withstand an ambush mid-air.”

Yuki raised a brow. “And you gave them what they paid for?”

“They got a mission,” you said firmly. “And once they landed, they got told how it works. They don’t get to keep me. This wasn’t a contract. It’s not legal to retain sorcerers as private guards, especially Special Grades.”

Your tone hardened as you locked eyes with her. “We’re not pets.”

Yuki’s smile turned sharp. “Damn right.”

She nodded, clearly approving. “A lot of us forget our worth. Glad to see you don’t.”

“I’ve never had a problem remembering,” you said, unwavering.

Yuki glanced at Suguru, then back at you, eyes narrowing slightly in thought. “You know…” she started casually, brushing a strand of blond hair behind her ear, “I’ve always wondered what kind of girl Geto Suguru would go for.”

Her gaze lingered on you, slowly sweeping from your shoes to your face—not in a disrespectful way, but like she was piecing something together. Then she smirked, crooked and knowing. “Now that I’ve seen it with my own eyes... not bad. Not bad at all.”

She turned her eyes back to Suguru, who raised a brow at her, unimpressed but not surprised.

“Actually,” Yuki added, leaning her weight on one hip, “you’re a perfect fit. Someone’s gotta keep a little light on this big guy—he broods too well.”

Suguru rolled his eyes with a faint sigh, but the way his arm subconsciously moved slightly closer to brush yours didn’t go unnoticed.

You gave Yuki a smirk of your own. “Good thing I’ve got a steady flame.”

Yuki laughed at that, full and unbothered. “Spicy. I like her,” she said to Suguru as if you weren’t right there.

He gave a low hum, eyes on you. “I do too.”

She nodded, clearly satisfied, then motioned to her approaching team of Grade 1 sorcerers. “Alright, lovebirds. We’ve got it from here.”

You gave a final glance at the now safely guarded family, then turned to Suguru as he walked beside you toward the waiting car, her voice echoing behind you.

“You ever get tired of Tokyo politics,” Yuki called out with a smirk, “come find me. I’ve got real work and colder beer.”

You raised a hand in casual farewell without looking back. “Only if you bring good snacks.”

“And a better playlist,” Suguru added flatly.

Yuki’s laughter echoed across the tarmac as the two of you walked off, the early evening wind brushing past your shoulders—mission complete, reputations intact, and egos only slightly poked.

Just as you and Suguru were about to head out from the secured private terminal, a distinguished-looking man in a crisp black suit approached—posture straight, expression calm, the kind of man who’s served high-profile families for decades. The family’s butler.

“Excuse me,” he called politely, bowing slightly before extending a sleek, black envelope toward Suguru. “Before you depart… the head of the family asked me to deliver this to you both, with their deepest gratitude.”

You took the envelope and opened it, revealing a glossy black and gold card nestled inside—clearly custom-made. Suguru arched a brow.

“They were… impressed,” the butler continued. “Not a single hair harmed. Their children never once felt fear. They believe such excellence deserves more than standard compensation.”

He inclined his head again, a faint smile curving his lips. “This card grants you an all-expense-paid stay at the Château Argentum, one of the most luxurious hotels in the country. Penthouse suite. Unlimited service. Full discretion. You are free to remain for as long as you like and this is a lifetime offer as the family is forever grateful for the protection.”

Your eyes flicked up from the card in mild surprise, while Suguru gave a soft exhale through his nose. “Overcompensating much?” he murmured under his breath, though he pocketed the card anyway.

The butler, undeterred by the dry remark, added, “The family considers your protection to be… the highest form of wealth. Feel free to enjoy any of the hotel’s services—spa, fine dining, private excursions, or… other indulgences.” He paused, as if reading between lines that hadn’t yet been written. “Simply show the card at the front desk every time you or your friends are here. Everything will be handled.”

You exchanged a glance with Suguru. He looked unusually relaxed, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.

“Well,” he said, voice a little lower as he leaned slightly toward you, “looks like we’re not flying back just yet.”

You smiled, tucking the card away.

“Not until we order champagne in a hot tub with a skyline view.”

I'm honestly obsessed with omegaverse and sentinel-guide verse right now. Unlike the western take on it, which often revolves and devolves into coercive *claiming bite* (sexual assault), the ones I've seen on jjwxc (bc of heavy censorship lmao) often chooses to approach from a different aspect. There's obviously a heavy romance plot, but there's also an element of social commentary that is more than aware of the exploitative nature of the patriarchy.

As in, ultimately, they recognize that omegas, guides, and those who have the ability to give birth are exploited resources regardless of what identifiers they use. No matter if they're scarce, no matter if the narrative itself waxes poetic about how everyone has been conditioned and propagandized to consider them to be most important and valuable above all, there's always a stone cold consensus that omegas and guides, birth givers regardless of gender, only have rights should they have the power to enforce it. Otherwise, they're living on someone else's good graces.

It's been a long time since I gave up on Western media and literature, so I could just be soap boxing from a place of ignorance, but the main reason why I couldn't just *turn my brain off* and keep reading f/m/m/m, reverse harem shenanigans, or the whole, man from space has no more women so fmc is special and valuable wow(!) trope, is that in the pursuit of easily marketable smut, they leave out any meaningful commentary and self awareness at all from an ostensibly *smart! Empowered! Takes initiative* fmc pov.

What turns me off from going back into and investigating the newest novels and mediums, though, is the consistent disdain abo connoisseur's have against straight het abo. I always thought omegaverse was about exploring gender norms and biases. It's sexist, in my opinion, if people can only appreciate the flipped gender dynamic if the feminine qualities being presented is from a character that is still considered male within the context.

If anything, the pairing that I consider to be most suitable to examine and explore abo-cerse, sentinal guide verse from, is from someone who is *gender neutral*. Not in the sense of gender nonconforming presenting masculine, or just in petulant fashion rebellion, but just as a regular person isekaid from a non guide/non-abo world masquerading as a beta/null*, but still being able to make an impact.

The message being that gender norms are restrictive and unproductive as a whole, and they should move together forward as a society- but with that said, i do prefer if this gnc character is only considered gnc in the verse, but they themselves are women, so I do recognize my own hypocrisy in this lol.

Anyways, my point is that omegaverse, although it's supposed to be a queer space/fertile garden for exploring queer identities and escaping from heteronormative ideals and biases, still fall into those same gendered biases. Still fall into the same toxic trope of straight het romances. Still roll around in the mire of internalized hatred and prejudices, and yet they consider their pairings superior just as long as the omega isn't a woman?

Maybe it's just that Western literature hasn't progressed beyond the boring abo tropes, so i can understand the disdain, but as someone who HAS always found value in female lead female centric stories, it just smacks of unaddressed misogyny.

Magnipods

The largest animals to walk Strix, and the heaviest animals on the planet, the Magnipods are awe-inspiring. With highly developed fermenting stomachs, they extract the maximum amount of nutrients from the plants they eat, allowing them to grow large even in this desert world. This also gives them an advantage, as large animals can travel longer distances in search of food, and these creatures have some of the most extensive migrations of any land-based animal on Strix.

Keelchests

Pictured: the Black Mountain Keelchest, found across the steppes of the Black Mountain region.

The unique bony projection of the chest on these animals serves a dual purpose; it acts as an anchor for the powerful running muscles, and is used defensively. Although rare, several eyewitnesses have reported the Keelchest charging at potential predators and using the bone as a battering ram. It may also be a sexually selected trait, as males have larger keels on average. Living in small herds, these animals migrate between seasonal watering holes on the midland plains.

Trumpeters

Pictured: a female Golden Trumpet, native to the plains between the Black Mountains and the Eastern Rise.

Named for their loud infrasonic calls, Trumpeters are more often heard than seen. With a tall, hollow crest that acts as a resonating chamber, these animals can communicate with each other from miles away. This comes in handy, as the males are solitary and use sound and vibrations in the ground to locate herds of females. Because of this, females have larger resonating chambers for calling and males have larger crest membranes for listening. The females and young travel seasonally, migrating between new feeding grounds. The males, meanwhile, set up a territory and rarely stray from it, waiting for females to pass by on their travels.

Skyscrapers

Pictured: a male masked Skyscraper, found on the central plains and forests, a very alarming species to encounter in the woods at night.

In a reversal of their cousins the Trumpeters, male Skyscrapers have massive hollow crests while the females do not. The males use this structure to produce infrasonic bellows to intimidate rivals, as the deeper the call the bigger the male. These migratory animals live in harems of a dominant male, multiple females, and their offspring. There also seems to be a “third gender” of small, feminine males who infiltrate harems to mate with the females. These are the only Magnipods to actually inhabit the Southern Forest for part of the year, feeding on tender new leaf growth in the spring and summer before migrating back to the savannas in the winter.

Sentinels

Pictured: the orange-crested Sentinel, found at the southern tip of the Eastern Rise, one of the more commonly observed species.

Mysterious and rarely encountered, the Sentinels only live in the highlands of the Eastern Rise. They are most often spotted perched on cliff tops, overlooking the lowland plains below. These animals seem to be solitary and it is unknown when or where they mate and raise offspring. DNA analysis has indicated that they are not closely related to any other living Magnipod, instead representing an ancient offshoot of the lineage. There is ongoing research into their population numbers and possible conservation efforts.
