It’s a Hades x Persephone book but like an AU not really a retelling. Persephone is a student studying journalism and wants to do an article on the elusive and mysterious club owner, Hades. Has on page smut (helll yeahhh) and honestly surprised me with how much I enjoyed it!

Forced proximity who. Not really smutty at all but what was there was pretty well written. An editor and I think a publisher (I honestly don’t remember) end up in the same small town. And they’re rivals! Gotta love a good ole enemies to lovers.

As you said your considering watching "Star Twinkle Pretty Cure" loke with Heartcatch plan too do reviews??

I just finished Episode 16 a few days ago, so I’m about a third of the way into the series. I’ll give my thoughts on it so far.

While I still prefer Tsubomi for her character development, I think Hikaru/Cure Star is a very likable lead with all of the energy she brings to the table. I like how she’s a shameless sci-fi nerd with her love for all things space, mainly constellations and aliens as shown in the first episode. She’s just so full of optimism and eagerness, she fills the role of leader well with how she can easily rally the other Cures. A good example of this was in one episode where Hikaru drew up a redesign for the team’s damaged rocket ship (which I’ll get to later) that the other Cures like so much, they manage to get the repairs done much quicker despite spending some time adding on accessories because of how motivated they are. This is a kind of character trait I really like seeing for leaders, being able to motivate the others to do things outside of the battlefield. Hikaru is just a really fun character so far, and is currently my favorite this season.

Lala/Cure Milky is also a really interesting character so far. Being an alien, most of her episodes deal with her getting to know the human race and its cultures, mainly through her friendship with Hikaru. She starts off more apprehensive to her situation on Earth, but does become more open to learning more. At the same time, this does lead to a flaw where she tends to blindly focus on pure logic and hates failure, much like a certain other alien primarily dressed in blue. There’s an episode where Lala transfers to Hikaru’s middle school and has a pretty bad first day with how little she understands the social protocol, and the next day, she relies on her AI to help her blend in more and understand to the point where she forces herself to stop using her verbal tic “-lun” at the end of her sentences. It shows how much she hates failure, and it says a lot about her character. She still manages to grow past this flaw a little, and I’m looking forward to seeing how else she develops in the series.

Elena/Cure Soleil is basically the big sister of the team kind of like Yuri from Heartcatch, though without the added baggage the latter had for most of her series. She’s referred to as “The Sun of Mihoshi Middle School” by the other characters. Really subtle there, writers. Granted, it’s referring to her friendly attitude towards her fellow students mixed with her athletic skills, which naturally draws a lot of students to admire and look up to her, even Hikaru. Unlike Itsuki, she’s much more relaxed around others and even asks Hikaru to stop referring to her as her sempai, especially since Hikaru has seniority over Elena as a Precure. She’s generally the more level-headed one of the team, and tends to rely on diplomacy more often, like when she diffuses an argument between Hikaru and Lala early on, and later helps to convince some aliens to hand over one of the MacGuffins/toy tie-ins, the Princess Star Color Pens peacefully after helping to defend their planet. From what I’ve heard, Elena and the fourth Cure were added to the show last-minute thanks to executives, but I think Elena fits in with the cast pretty well so far.

Likewise, Madoka/Cure Selene is referred to as “The Moon of Mihoshi Middle School” because she’s... high-class? Fancy? Rich? She’s basically meant to be a foil to Elena in some regards. While Elena is more lax and friendly, Madoka is more stoic and a bit of a perfectionist. While Elena has a happy relationship with her family, Madoka has a much more tense relationship with her father who hates aliens for no reason, and will take any chance he gets to remind the audience how much of an asshole he is. I think he’s running for the Worst Father in Animation Award after hearing Gabriel Agreste won it three years in a row. Madoka generally has the hardest time as a Precure because of how she has to keep it a secret from her xenophobic father, and seems to be struggling with her loyalty. This is mainly because I’m so sick of family drama from Miraculous, but Madoka’s character arc revolving around her relationship with her dad is honestly why she’s my least favorite out of the four.

Fuwa is nothing more than a plot device/cute thing to look at. I mean, at least the fairies in Heartcatch could actually speak in complete sentences, and not say their names like a Pokemon. Prunce is honestly a much more memorable character with his dialogue and plays the role as comic relief well.

I really like the villains so far. They’re all aliens based off Yokai and have their own approaches to the monster of the week formula. Kappard (a Kappa), is a vain warrior who tends to use the imaginations of others to create new weapons to use against the team. Tenjo (a Tengu), views her troops as pawns and uses the the imaginations of others to turn them into giant versions of the show’s grunts, the Nottorei. Aiwarn (a Hitotsume-kozo), is a trickster who uses corrupted Princess Star Color Pens to create the true monsters of the week, the Nottoriga, using the imagination of others. There’s also an Oni-themed alien who’s their boss, but he hasn’t really done much yet. Overall, these villains have some really creative motifs that I really want to see more of. It kind of reminds me of the movie Treasure Planet which did something similar by combining fantasy with sci-fi.

Another thing I really like about this show is how it generally plays with certain sci-fi tropes. The very first time the team goes out into space to search for one of the Princess Star Color Pens, they get into trouble with the locals, who see it as a sacred artifact, and even before that, look down on the Cures for not having fur like they do. It’s a pretty realistic depiction of making first contact with an alien race like that. Another interesting episode is in the aforementioned episode where Lala goes to school for the first time. You’d think that since her kind work are automatically educated by artificial intelligence, she’d be really smart, right? Actually, because of how much she’s relied on an AI to help her do everything, she’s so inept that she can’t even calculate double digits in class like 15+10, and generally struggles on her first day of school.

Generally, I’m really enjoying the show so far, and I’m looking forward to continuing it.

[fanfic] To Awake

He wasn’t sure of how long he’d lain there. He didn’t remember where he’d been before here, or if he’d even been anywhere at all. There wasn’t much in his head, other than the fading sense of pain centered in his chest, and some sort of weight on his back.

He twitched. He couldn’t get up, not yet, but he tried to move and couldn’t. A fading instinct told him that he should breath but it wasn’t wrong to not breathe either. Everything seemed heavier now. It wasn’t a wrong feeling and he wasn’t sure of what he was comparing it to. But he felt heavy. He knew that much. Heavy and with a weight on his back.

Slowly he tried to open his eyes, at least. He could manage that. He lay on what looked like a beach – though how he knew what a beach was, he couldn’t have said. But this was a beach, though not one he could say he’d ever seen in his life – however long that might have been. The sand he could see was a pale red, and if he fought hard enough to raise his head, he could see equally red well, it wasn’t water, but it was liquid, at least.

“Are you sure you saw something this way?” A voice spoke. It wasn’t a voice that he recognized but he knew it was a voice regardless. Someone else was there – at least two someone elses.

He tried again to lift his head, twitching it to the side, and couldn’t quite make it.

“It won’t be them, Durbe,” the voice said, not waiting for an answer from whoever their companion was. The speaker’s voice held pride – he recognized that much, if nothing else.

“I’m aware of that,” the other voice finally replied. “But it could be something useful. Did you want me to call Vector for this?”

The proud voice, growing closer now, sneered. “No.”

The nameless one could hear the faint crunch of footsteps now and he made one more attempt. A sudden spike of strength came from an unknown place and he found himself sitting up. The weight on his back shifted, and he flopped half-over as he did. He tried to get a good look behind himself and couldn’t get his head bent around. Something was in the way – large and hard and a deep shade of blue.

Was it him? Was that a part of him?

Then he turned his head around to stare at the two who stood not that far away. Both of them seemed created of rock, just like he was. One’s skin was shades of gray, while the other in brilliant gold. The gray one didn’t seem to bother with anything like clothes, while the golden one wore a sort of sarong-like item, and had long golden hair as well.

That was the one that spoke, though neither of them possessed a mouth. But the nameless one knew the words came from him.

“Who are you? What are you doing here in the Ocean of Ill Will?” He bent closer, sharp eyes skimming up and down. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you before.”

For a brief second, the nameless one thought that he should move lips that he found out in this moment he didn’t have. But the words sounded regardless.

“I don’t know.”

The golden one turned to the gray one. “He’s new. A new Barian.” There was a definite hint of wonder in his voice and the gray one nodded slowly before turning his attention there.

“Do you remember where you came from before here?”

Slowly he shook his head, trying one more time to move. This time he had better luck, since the golden one reached out to help him up. When he came to his feet, he tried to look at his back again, and saw the blue – whatever they were – there still. He reached one hand to brush against it and twitched – not just his hand, but the things there.

“Those are wings,” the golden one told him. “You have wings – not many Barians have those.”

Barians. Like so much else it wasn’t a name that he recognized, but it felt right even as he heard it. He stared down at himself. His skin was as hard and rocky as theirs, but a deep shade of blue. Tiny jewel were set on his joints, but they offered no impediment to moving. What held him before seemed to have only been weariness.

“I don’t remember anything,” he said at last, turning to look at them. One hand moved and there was a flicker of blue energy that became something solid – a deck of cards.

Oh. Yes. He knew now. He was a duelist. He picked up the cards and rifled through them cautiously. Cyber Dragons – the wings looked like what he could see of his own, even with tiny threads of metal there.

“I’m Durbe,” the gray one introduced himself before gesturing to the golden one. “This is Mizael. We’re two of the Barian Emperors. You, it seems, are a new Barian.” He gestured again, this time to some of the scarlet towers that now could be seen rising in the distance. “What Barians there are live there, except for the Emperors. We live there.” Another gesture, to a taller tower.

Mizael continued to regard him. “Are you certain you don’t know your name?

He knew that he shouldn't know it. But the question stirred up a small thought, a sensation that wriggled a trifle closer. He reached for it; was it his name? He thought it might be. It felt like a name.

“Lesath,” he said at last, and while he had no tongue to taste the words with, it did feel oddly right. Yes. His name was Lesath. It didn’t entirely feel right, but it felt like it was his.

Mizael held out his hand. “Let me see your deck,” he ordered. Lesath regarded him, the wings on his back flickering.

“Why?” This deck was precious to him. He knew very little, but he knew that at least. He wasn’t going to hand it over to just anyone.

“Because I want to see how good of a duelist you are,” Mizael said, crossing his arms over his chest. “You can either show it to me or duel against me.”

Lesath didn’t know much. His location, his name, the names of these two near-strangers, and that he carried this deck. He drew himself up and his wings spread broadly.

“If those are my options, then I will duel you.” He believed he could remember how to duel.

Durbe stepped to one side, a hint of interest in his eyes. Mizael took two steps back, his own duel disk appearing.

It was a short, rough, powerful duel. Lesath learned quickly that he did indeed know how to duel and he seemed to be reasonably good at it. Mizael was no slouch either, and their monsters roared in rage at one another. Lesath wondered if he heard words in those roars.

One other point he learned quickly – they used different styles. His was something called “Fusion”, while Mizael wielded a style called “XYZ”. Their talents were close enough that the duel ended in a stalemate, neither claiming true victory. But Lesath could not say he was unsatisfied with the results. Fighting someone this strong felt right in ways that he couldn’t deny.

Mizael brushed himself off after the duel. “Barians like you work for us,” he said a trifle gruffly. “Those are allowed to live in our palace, to make it more convenient. I want you to join the ranks of my servants.

Lesath shrugged. It wasn’t as if he had anything better to do with his time. He did need to learn about where he was – and maybe learn about where he was and how he’d gotten here. Who knew if he’d ever learn anything but it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try.

And he really wouldn’t mind learning more about Mizael, either. That clearly visible pride attracted him, a mirror of his own.

“Vector will probably throw a fit that you picked him without giving anyone else the chance,” Durbe offered, definite hints of amusement in his voice. Mizael only shrugged.

“I don’t make my decisions based off of what Vector thinks,” he declared. “If he wants to argue with me about it, that’s his problem. Lesath is mine.”

Lesath didn’t think anyone had ever claimed him like that. He didn’t want to argue the point either. He wasn’t sure of who Vector was but he also didn’t care. He far preferred the company of Mizael and Durbe already. He wondered if he’d feel differently in the future.

He glanced at the ocean, then to the scarlet skies, and the red crystal tower that dotted the landscape. Not a world he knew anything of, but he thought with a little time, he could come to call it home.

Notes: Lesath is the name of one of the stars in the constellation Scorpio’s tail. The only birthday ever given for Ryou is November 1, which makes him a Scorpio.

One day I will write more about Ryou’s time as a Barian and his adventures there. He might even remember his real name one day.

Some people would have told you that dancing the night away on your wedding night in your heels was a bad idea. Those people are cowards. Sure, your feet wanted to murder you, but you were currently wrapped up in Bucky’s arms, so those people could suck your metaphorical dick. You both had collapsed onto the bed of the master bedroom of the cabin at the base of the woods on the mountain. The snowstorm kept you away from your actual Honeymoon destination, a small beach island miles away from the Northern Kingdom, so this would have to do for now. At least you were in a huge wooden cabin, alone (though your guards were set up not too far by), and finally in the arms of your new husband.

Bucky’s right hand reached out interlacing with your left. “Gods, we should have left the party hours ago, My Love.”

You chuckled, sitting up slowly. “We definitely should have. Maybe we would have had the energy to consummate out marriage like you were suggesting earlier.” You were entirely teasing, but you saw Bucky’s eyes widen as he quickly sat up.

“No, no, no, no,” he quickly rushed out. “We can totally do this, give me like ten minutes to calm my heart from dancing before we do anything.”

You laughed at that, kissing his cheek sweetly. “I think I can wait ten more minutes,” you teased before kissing him soundly on the lips. You quickly deepened the kiss, smirking against his lips as he gave you a small growl. “Down wolf,” you pulled away, letting your hand drift over his arms. Somewhere during the night, he had taken off his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves, looking like the human personification of pure sin.

You stood, amused as he leaned forward to chase your lips. You gently took off his crown, running a hand through his hair before placing the silver band on the dresser then placed your own crown beside his. You then placed your royal crested ring down, Bucky’s soon joining yours. You moved to take of the constellation necklace, only for a warm arm to wrap around you, tugging you against a thick wall of muscle. “Leave it, babe. Let me help you undress, my beautiful, stunning Wife,” Bucky whispered into your ear, sending shivers down your spine. The dark timbre of his voice sent a jolt of warmth to your core.

“Why of course, my dear Husband,” you tilted your head forward, shuddering faintly as the coolness of his metal hand pressed against the back of your neck. Your coronation cape fell to the floor first, then, Bucky slowly unfastened each button on the back of your wedding dress. Agonizingly slow, teasing you. “James…” You warned lightly. He smirked behind you, knowing he was in trouble since you used his first name. Finally, he popped the last button off, helping you tug the lace off your shoulders and letting it billow to the floor in a neat pile. You stepped out of it, turning to face him. He groaned lowly, sounding like it was trapped in the back of his throat. Your wedding dress had a built-in bra, due to the sheer lace illusion all over the design, leaving you in only white lace panties, with a navy-blue lace garter on your upper thigh.

“Fuck me, y/n/n,” he murmured, in pure awe of you.

Chuckling at the choice of words, your hands started to undo the buttons on his shirt. “Well, I am trying to, My Love,” you gave up on the buttons, a rough tug breaking the last two free.

Bucky gasped softly, thoroughly surprised, “Gods, you’re utterly perfect,” he muttered, blue eyes looking down at you.

You took a step back, frustrated, “Can you please get naked already? Your stupid belt hates me,” you sounded bitter, wanting to seem sexy by taking off his clothes, only to be foiled by his pants.

He scrambled to pull his shirt off, and nearly tripped over his shoes and pants as he shimmed out of them. Left in only black boxers, and the necklace you gifted him, he looked back towards you. You sat on the edge of the bed, legs crossed at your ankles, biting your lip as you watched him. “If you wanted a show you should have told me, I would have been happy to oblige,” your eyes slowly made their way above his chest and looked up to see him smirking. Smug. Well let’s change that, shall we?

You uncrossed then crossed your legs at your thighs, pressing them together and making a show out of teasing him. “Oh, trust me, baby boy, I’m getting quite the show,” you practically purred. His jaw went slack, and you couldn’t help the little smirk on your face. “Well? Going to stand there all day, My King,” you made sure to emphasize that, biting your lip as you gave him your best look of innocence. You could practically see him gulp.

“Oh, you’re definitely going to get it,” he growled, firm and precise in his movements as he came closer. He ran his thumb down your cheek, tilting your chin up to face him. “I know you can’t get pregnant again since you already are, but how about we practice?” he teased, “We can christen every single room in this cabin, and then when we go to the actual honeymoon cottage, we can christen every single room there as well.”

You shuddered, nodding as you let your eyes close, leaning into his touch. “I am yours, and you are mine,”

“From this day until my last day,” he finished, smiling warmly down at you. “I’m going to have the privilege and honor of loving you forever,” he sunk to his knees, now below you. He gently spread your legs, pressing a kiss on your inner thigh. “And ravaging you,” he smirked, sucking a mark onto the sensitive flesh. You moaned softly, running your hand through his hair.

“You absolute wolf,” you groaned out as his kisses and marks trailed higher.

He ripped the lace panties off, then tugged the garter off your leg with his teeth. His smirk was feral, “You love it though.”

“That I do, but I liked those panties,” your breathing hitched as he pulled your thighs over his shoulder, taking a long slow lick up your already slick core. You whimpered softly, your free hand holding your weight up.

“I’ll make it up to you,” Bucky didn’t waste any more time. His mouth attached to your clit, making you moan out. He ran his thumb against your folds, thoroughly enjoying your mewling. You writhed, still in his grip, biting your lip as blush crept up your cheeks. “Are you seriously writing your name with your tongue?”

He went red, chuckling as his fingers slipped out of you, “Caught me, My Queen,” he smirked, a bit self-assured, but he was going down on you like a champ, so you weren’t about to complain.

You sat up, tugging him onto the bed and straddling his hips quickly as you tugged his boxers off. “My turn for tricks,” you smirked, the vantage point letting you look down on him as you slid down onto his length with a groan. With every roll of your hips up and down his cock, you felt the coil in your stomach tighten. With every fervent shock shooting down your core and up your spine, your grip on his shoulders tightened. “Fuck,” you murmured, rolling your hips harder.

He groaned below you, face nuzzled into the crook of your neck. The coolness of his metal necklace and arm touching your smoldering skin sent more waves of pleasure straight into you. His grip on your hips tightened as he bucked up into you, making you cry out softly as he nudged your g-spot. “Gods, just like that, baby,” he mumbled as you tightened around him.

You moved faster, teetering just on the edge of your release, moaning and panting his name like a prayer. He twitched below you, hips rolling up to meet yours. Knowing he was close you tilted his head up, kissing him roughly, sucking on his bottom lip with a groan. “P-please,” you slurred, seemingly drunk on the pleasure as you tilted your head back, eyes fluttering close. Bucky’s lips attached to your neck, sucking, nibbling, and licking his own marks to claim you.

He latched onto your pulse point, tugging your hips down onto his hard. “Just like that, fuck, I know you’re close. Cum for me, baby,” he groaned, pressing his nose against the back of your ear. The two of you clung to each other, sweaty and sated, at least for now. He tugged you up the bed, collapsing beside you and cuddling close. “Gods, can we do that again?” you joked, still haven’t caught your breath yet.

He laughed, smiling at you fondly. “Whatever you wish, My Queen,” he kissed your forehead before tilting your head up to give you a sweet kiss, one you would never say no to. “From now until the end of time.” Bucky smiled warmly, finally, for the first time in his life at rest. Finally, able to enjoy life and everything that came with it.

Looking for the perfect Pagan or witch name? Check out our list of over 100 magickal names drawn from the realms of the occult. Whether it’s for yourself, an animal familiar, or a fictional character, have fun perusing these delightfully witchy monikers.

Christian names have usually honoured Biblical figures and saints, but Pagans prefer to name themselves after nature, folklore, and the gods of antiquity. Many names are drawn from ancient stories and are charged with mythic power. Some of the names on this list didn’t start out magickal, but got that way in modern times through association with famous witches. (This is admittedly a Eurocentric list, since my own background is in classical literature and Western magick. If you are the bearer of a witchy name from another tradition, I’d love to learn about it!)

Many witch names are unisex and others can be adapted to any gender. Creating compound names are one way that Pagans pay homage to sacred objects, spirits, and concepts (e.g., Raven Moonflower or Amethyst Dragonfyre). Try mixing and matching these first names with your favourite nouns and adjectives to create your very own Craft name.

Adelinda - A Germanic name meaning "noble serpent." A variation is Delinda.

Aine – “Radiance.” Queen of the fairies in Celtic lore.

Airlia – “Ethereal.”

Aislinn – “Dream or vision.” Irish female name.

Alcina – A Greek sorceress. Title character of an opera by Handel.

Alita – “Winged one.”

Althea – “Healer.”

Alvin/Alvina – “Elf.” Many "Al-" names related to elfkind, including Alfred/Alfreda ("elf counsel") and Albert ("bright elf" or "elf ruler").

Ambrosia/Ambrosius – “Food of the gods.”

Amethyst - Lovely purple stone, known to the ancients for bringing sobriety, wisdom, and protection, especially to travelers.

Angela - “Divine messenger.”

Aoelus – “Wind.”

Aradia – Legendary Italian Witch, one of the principal figures in Charles Godfrey Leland's 1899 work Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches.

Ariadne – “Most holy.” Mythical figure associated with mazes and labyrinths.

Ariel – A Biblical name meaning “Lion of God.” In Disney, a little mermaid. In Shakespeare, a shape-shifting spirit who aids the wizard Prospero. Also the name of the famous poem cycle by Sylvia Plath.

Artemis – Greek virgin goddess of the moon and wild animals.

Arwen – An elven princess in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Arwen is derived from Welsh and means “fine” or “fair.” A masculine form is Arwyn.

Asteria – “Star-like.” Variations include Aster, Astrid, and Astra.

Aura – “Wind,” in Greek. In metaphysics, the word refers to the energy field surrounding the body.

Avalon – Legendary final resting place of King Arthur. Also the setting of a series of fantasy novels by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Awen – “Inspiration.” Symbol of the well of creativity and of the bardic arts.

Bran – Means “Raven” in several Celtic languages. A great historical name with connections to Welsh mythology and Arthurian legend.

Breena – “Faery place.” Variations: Brinna or Briana.

Brigid – Celtic goddess of the forge, healing, and poetry. Beloved in Ireland and around the world, variations of her name include Bridget, Brighid, and Bride.

Calypso – “Hidden.” A nymph who detained Odysseus for many years.

Cassandra – Ill-fated soothsayer of Troy. Cassandra incurred the displeasure of Apollo, who cursed her so that her prophecies would never be believed.

Cedar – An ancient tree associated with wisdom and protection.

Celeste – “Heavenly.”

Cerridwen – “Fair as the poem.” May also derive from the Celtic word for “cauldron.” A powerful enchantress of Welsh legend, identified with the Wiccan mother goddess.

Charon – As the boatman on the River Styx, Charon ferries souls across to the Underworld. The modern Greek equivalent is Haros.

Chimera – “Dream, phantasm.”

Circe – Greek demi-goddess or witch renowned for her knowledge of herbs and potions.

Devin – “Musical poet.” A Gaelic boy’s name, now unisex.

Diana – Roman name for the moon goddess, known in European lore as the “Queen of the Witches.”

Draco – “Dragon.” One famous bearer is Draco Malfoy of the Harry Potter series.

Eartha – “Earthly.” From Old English.

Erzulie – A spirit (or family of spirits) in Vodou. She has many forms and rules over love, beauty, health, and sexual passion.

Fabula – “Legend.”

Faye – “Fairy.” From Old English/Old French. Also Fay, Fae, Faeryn, Fayette.

Fiamma - "Flame." This Italian word carries the same connotations as "flame" in English, meaning either a (literal) fire or a (figurative) lover.

Foster – “Forest guardian.” From Old English.

Freya – “Noble lady.” One of the most revered of the Norse deities.

Gaia – The personification of Earth, and one of the Greek primordial gods.

Glinda – “Fair” or “good.” The Good Witch of the South in the Oz novels of L. Frank Baum.

Gwydion – Master magician and trickster of Welsh lore. His name means “born of trees.” Famous bearers include the American witch and bard Gwydion Pendderwen (1946–1982).

Hazel – “Hazel tree.” Hazel branches are the traditional material for divining rods.

Hecate – Crossroads-dwelling goddess of witchcraft. Her name may mean either “power” or “far-reaching.” The Greek spelling is Hekate.

Hermione – “Messenger.” A female name derived from Hermes. Popularized as a Witch name by the Harry Potter series, but also appropriate for a Hermetic magician.

Herne – “Horned.” The lord of wild things, identified with the Pagan Horned God.

Holly - This cheery girl's name is shared with one of the sacred trees of Celtic lore. A male or family name version is Hollis.

Isis - Mighty Egyptian goddess of magick and healing.

Jasmine – A delicate and aromatic flower known for its mystical and aphrodisiac properties. The name is Arabic in origin.

Jinx – “Trick” or “curse.”

Lamia – The Lamia is a child-devouring serpent or monster in Greek mythology. She was once a Libyan queen, but was cursed by Hera for her trysts with Zeus.

Larissa – A Greek sea nymph, also the name of an ancient city in Thessaly.

Leo – “Lion.” Also a sign of the zodiac.

Ligeia – “Shrill” or “whistling.” The name of one the Greek sirens, revived by Edgar Allan Poe in his short story by the same title.

Lilith – Adam’s first wife, according to Hebrew mythology. Lilith is associated with various night demons and flying goddesses.

Lorelei – Freshwater mermaid of the Rhine River. The Lorelei is a temptress who delights in the destruction of fishermen.

Lucia – A Latin name meaning “light”. The masculine form is Lucius.

Lucifer – A provocative name associated with the Christian devil. Lucifer means “light-bringer.”

Luna – “Moon.” Luna Lovegood is a minor character in the Harry Potter series.

Rowena – A Germanic name, possible derived from the words for “fame” and “joy.” Another name revitalized by the Harry Potter series.

Sabrina – Latin place-name meaning “from Cyprus” or “from the river Severne.” Teenage witch of comics and television.

Sage – “Wise redeemer.” Also a widely-used herb in witchcraft.

Salem – Historic Massachusetts city known for its 17th-century witchcraft trials. The feline familiar of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Samantha – In Hebrew it means something like, “God heard” or “told by God.” In Greek, it may mean “flower.” Samantha owes its witchy cred to Samantha Stevens, the protagonist of the TV sitcom Bewitched.

Sedona – A town in Arizon famed for its energy vortexes, now a thriving New Age community. This pretty name has no known meaning and was probably invented by an early settler in the area.

Sophia – “Wisdom.”

Stella - "Star." Variations include Estelle and Estrella.

Strega – “Witch” in Italian.

Sybil – “Prophetess” or “Divine counsel.” This name, from ancient Greek, also belonged to the famous English witch Sybil Leek (1917-1982).

Sylvia – “Of the forest.”

Tanith – Phoenician moon goddess whose name means "serpent lady." Famous Taniths include science fiction and fantasy writer Tanith Lee (1947 – 2015).

Tara – In Irish, a rocky hill. In Sanskrit, a star.

Thurston – “Thor’s stone.”

Umbra – “Shadow, ghost.”

Vesta – Roman hearth goddess. Priestesses of Vesta tended the sacred flame in her temples.

Willow – “Willow tree.” Willow is a popular witch character in the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Beckett and Oriana laid a tangled mess in the sheets their breathing returning to normal. That was quite possibly the most insane and amazing thing I’ve ever experienced. I feel like I swallowed sunshine.

Looking down at Oriana laying on his chest he smiled to himself. She’s incredible.

“Hey,” Beckett said causing her to look up at him “Think you’re ready to tell me what’s going on in that pretty head of yours now?”

Oriana’s face fell, and she looked away. “You have to promise me you won’t tell anyone.”

Beckett brought her face back up to his “I promise you.”

Oriana’s face softened, releasing a small smile “Before that day when I came in through the pond…I had no idea magic existed. I woke up for college after having a super terrifying nightmare where that shadow beast appeared, and my dorm mirror sucked me in and now here we are.”

“Surely your parents must have mentioned something to you over the years?” Beckett said.

Oriana’s face was somber “I’m adopted, so I never knew my birth parents.”

“Oh, Ori I’m sorry I didn’t know,” Beckett said rubbing smooth circles on her shoulder.

“And now I’m Sun and fire Attuned and I don’t even know how or why…and that thing keeps coming for me and I have no clue why…I don’t even know who I am anymore.”

Tears threatened to spill over and she shut her eyes trying to fight them off, and Beckett felt awful.

I have been an absolute prick to her, and this entire time she’s been innocent and dealing with the weight of all of this. She was literally afraid of me ...of what I’d do if I found out.

“Ori look at me,” Beckett said locking eyes with her “we’re going to figure this out together, alright? In the meantime, I will teach you everything I know about magic and I’ll help you in your classes if you need the extra boost.” Bringing his hand up to cup her face he smiled.

“Why Beckett,” Oriana teased, “If I didn’t know any better I’d think you were trying to spend more time with me.”

“Ha you wish,” he said winking at her. Pausing for just a moment, he continued “I want to show you something.”

Sitting up, Beckett focused his energy as a hologram lit the room. Stars danced around, forming constellations in the darkness of his bedroom.

“This is one of the first things you're taught about magic. Just like the stars belong in the night sky our affinity for magic is innate. It's inside of us. Those of us that can point out and define the constellations are destined to use that magic.”

Beckett put a hand on Oriana’s. “Ori, I’ve seen how you nail every spell you’ve done. Magic is in your blood. You may not know who you are, but I do.”

“You do,” she asked quizzically.

“I do, you’re Oriana, the girl who drives me absolutely insane. Fire and Sun Attuned, amazingly talented and witty enough to keep up a grade A banter with yours truly.”

Oriana giggled “You can be quite the charmer when you wanna be.”

Beckett’s face tugged into a smirk “Only when I want to be, so let’s keep this a secret between us, eh?”

“I doubt anyone would believe me anyway…no offense, but you have a snobbish reputation.”

“None taken, I can be quite the snob, just normally I don’t care who it affects.” He responded

Oriana blushed a shade of pink as Beckett gave her one of his million-dollar smiles. With the swipe of his hand, the stars disappeared, and the room dimmed back into darkness. Beckett laid back down

“It’s far too late for you to sneak back into your dorm, not to mention I’m not entirely sure it’s safe for you to be walking around on your own with that monster still out there somewhere. As long as you promise not to hog all the covers you can stay here with me tonight” he said a smug sarcastic smile on his lips.

Oriana hit Beckett playfully in the chest as she settled down against him “Even if I steal all the covers I promise to keep you toasty” she said with a wink.

Beckett couldn’t resist smiling “Please don’t set any more things on fire. I happen to love my furniture.”

Rolling her eyes Oriana laughed “You didn’t seem to mind when it happened before.”

Beckett’s cheeks reddened “Well, yeah ...but. That was different” he said composing himself. “We’ve got a few early classes tomorrow we should get to sleep.

Oriana closed her eyes relaxing into him before opening her eyes again “Wait how did you know my schedule?”

Beckett only grinned while his eyes were still closed, and Oriana couldn’t help but snuggle into the crook of his arm.

Oh, Ori, what on earth are you doing to me. Beckett thought as he drifted off to sleep with Oriana safely in his arms.

The following morning, Beckett woke up to find his bed empty. He frowned. Did I dream everything?

He rolled over and looked at the corner of his room, where his jacket was. Nope. Not a dream. I need a new jacket.

Sighing, he got out of bed and pulled on his clothes. He needed to get to class. At least he would be seeing her again shortly.

When he arrived, his eyes instantly found her, sitting next to Zephyr, laughing at something he was saying. Beckett felt himself go rigid at the thought of someone else making her laugh. He glowered at them and walked towards his normal seat in the front. Unable to stop himself, he paused at her desk.

“Oriana. Good to see you.” He said stiffly.

She rose her eyebrows at him. “Good Morning, Beckett. I trust you slept well?” She smirked

“Actually, I was a little cold when I woke up.” He muttered, continuing on his way.

“What was that about?” Zephyr asked Oriana.

“Oh, Um…well, you know we had detention together.” She started. “Well, we kinda started talking, and he’s really not as bad as you think. He can actually be quite…kind.” She finished

Zephyr’s mouth fell open. “You’re blushing!”

“What? No I’m not!” She defended

“Oh girl, you have a crush on the resident Loner Nerd. You can’t hide this from me!”

“Zephyr, shhh” Oriana whispered. “Seriously, shut up. I’m just saying he’s not so bad.”

“I literally thought he was going to shoot daggers through his eyes at me. What really happened at the library?” he asked

“Noth…”

“Good Morning, class.” The professor walked in. “Time to get to work.”

Oriana saw Zephyr shoot her a look that clearly said this conversation wasn’t over. She made sure she was first out the door when the class was dismissed. She was halfway to her next class when Beckett fell into step next to her.

“Well. I see you felt like you needed to do the walk of shame this morning. Sneaking out before I woke up? Oriana, you could have stayed as long as you wanted. I…enjoyed having you with me.”

Oriana laughed “You enjoyed a lot of things. I did too. But I didn’t know how you would feel this morning. Last night was…I don’t know what it was. I figured you wouldn’t want me in your room anymore, and I needed to change before class.”

“You’re embarrassed.” He accused. “You’re embarrassed of me. To be seen with me.”

“No! That’s not…”

Beckett scoffed and, glancing around, took her hand and led her to a corner where two buildings met, out of sight from the rest of the bustling students.

“Beckett…” Oriana began

He pressed two fingers to her lips to stop her, then replaced his fingers with his lips. He kissed her soft and slow, and she moaned into him, flashes of the previous night rushing back to the front of their minds. He pressed her against the wall, deepening the kiss, before a burst of laughter sounded from somewhere and he pulled back abruptly.

“Sorry, I…Sorry.” He muttered. “Clearly you don’t want…”

“I do!” She exclaimed, a little too loudly. She bit her lip as their gazes met. “I do…want you, I mean. Beckett, last night was…I mean, God, it was amazing. I had no idea that when we touched, something like that would happen. I honestly thought you would be the embarrassed one! I didn’t think you would want me today, I really didn’t. I thought you might want to forget everything.”

“Ori…” He breathed, and started leaning in to kiss her again, but stopped himself. He didn’t want to get carried away here, and something about being with her made him get carried away. He cleared his throat.

“I should go.” He said, simply, and turned and walked away, leaving Oriana staring after him, completely confused by what just happened.

She walked into her next class in a fog. Does he want more? Last night was incredible, and the magic he showed me…I’ve never seen anything like it. I guess I shouldn’t have snuck out this morning after all? No, what am I talking about? I need to focus on school, I don’t have time to figure him out.

Beckett sat down in his next class, back to fuming. He couldn’t believe the emotions running back through him again. What is it about this girl? She’s amazing, and frustrating, and incredible, and sexy as hell, and something wants to hurt her, and I will die before I let that happen again.

As his professor started talking, Beckett was once again pulled back into his thoughts. I’ve been a complete ass to her except for last night…I guess I understand why she would think she needed to sneak out of my room this morning. But after our worlds collided together…ugh. Damn it. Maybe she’s right. Maybe I don’t want more. I don’t have time to date anyway.

But as the class wore on, Beckett found himself completely unable to focus on the lesson, a first for him. I guess there’s a lot of firsts happening since I met her.

He glanced out the window just in time to see her rushing past the building, pausing for a moment, her eyes turned in his direction. He felt that strange yet familiar pull again, and all he wanted to do was go to her, pull her close, tell her that she’s his. But as quickly as she came into his view, she was gone again. It was such an unfamiliar feeling for him, caring deeply for someone. He needed to get himself in check, as he realized the class had ended and everyone was gone, except for him. He’d missed the whole thing. He sighed, running a hand through his normally perfect hair. This was going to be an interesting year.

OC Design Talk - Episode 1: Perseus [Starglass Zodiac]

Kicking off one of the things I made this blog for: Character design talks!

I absolutely LOVE talking about character design and the thought process that goes into all of my original characters, so I hope to make a series out of it! I’ll be talking about visual design as well as backstory and personality for the characters, and the general intent behind their concepts. Over time I’ll have links to different characters and their talks in each post, so you can go exploring if you want. :D I might make an archive page or post somewhere too for navigation purposes. I’ve got a lot of characters I want to talk about, past and present, but we’re actually starting off with a brand new one today!

As of writing this post I just finished this design today / yesterday, but it’s already gotten so much love and I’d really like to talk more in depth about it. Plus I love how it came out anyway. ;u;

Presenting: Perseus! He is one of the zodiac companions from my webcomic series, Starglass Zodiac.

In this story, zodiac companions are essentially the “children” of the zodiac. While not all of the companions are the age of a child necessarily, they generally have less experience than the main zodiac, and thus look up to them as mentors / role models. Any of the constellations can be chosen as a companion, and it is a mutual decision, leading some to try for the position directly (like Centaurus to Sagittarius).

Constellations in this universe go through different incarnations, and thus have varying personalities and appearances depending on whose spirit inhabits them at any given time. Every star has a set amount of energy, and every incarnation has their “time” before they eventually die, leaving behind black holes. Some are lost in deliberate usage of energy, such as in combat, while others die out naturally. As new stars are born, previous constellations have a chance to be reincarnated, and new constellations can form from these as well. There is a chance, however, that they will not return at all.

For Perseus in particular, I liked the idea of previous incarnations of the constellation being more like the character upon which it is based. Mythologically speaking, Perseus was a famous hero known for slaying monsters, similar to Hercules. With this incarnation, however, I thought it would be interesting if he actively fought against what his name is famous for. Or more specifically, used his skills in combat to fight for better things. This Percy does not fight for glory or fame, and does not possess the ego of a typical hero. But despite his change in motive, he still has to carry the burden of his “monster killer” title, as if he himself has become the monster instead. He views this as punishment for the misdeeds of the others who bared his name, ashamed of a past that wasn’t really his own.

Perseus is a companion to Aries, and the two are almost polar opposites (outside of being skilled on the battlefield), with Aries being the most volatile and aggressive between them. That said, Aries did recognize Perseus’s desire to redeem his name. Aries, being the least agreeable of the signs, has similar goals when it comes to keeping his aggression in check and upholding his role as a sign and co-protector of the Astral Plane. In his words, “if I can do it, you can too, kid.”

From a visual standpoint, I wanted Perseus’s design to be somewhat chimerical (as in, made up of seemingly unrelated parts), but with a unifying colour scheme to tie it all together. In this case it would be different parts of monsters that, presumably, his previous incarnations had slain. Arguably Perseus’s most famous kill, Medusa, is referenced here, particularly with the snake-like elements of his skin and hair. Demon-like horns, claws, a tail, and a cat-like animal hide are also present. He likely has sharp teeth too, even if they aren’t drawn here (I will do follow-up drawings later).

Like all of the other constellation designs, his symbol (designed by these lovely folks) is incorporated into several aspects of his design. How often a symbol appears in a design can vary greatly depending on how well it can be incorporated, and sometimes its inclusion is more subtle as a result. We have a good mix of that here with Perseus, with his belt, cape and shield being the most obvious uses of the symbol, but it’s also present on his chest plate underneath the animal hide. His shield specifically is a reference to the mirrored shield that was used to turn Medusa’s glare against her. His sword exists for similar reasons, and is his weapon of choice in combat. The rest of his attire is Greek and Roman inspired, like his mythological counterpart.

I came up with the blue-yellow-pink dynamic with the colour scheme starting with his eyes, and went on to develop it from there. I knew I wanted either blue or green as a main colour, as those are common for monsters, and the brightness of the pink and yellow made for a bold colour scheme. I did try a bright orange instead of pink a few times, as that is blue’s complimentary colour, but I found the contrast was not strong enough between it and the yellow. Having a bold colour scheme matched with a quieter personality creates the kind of contrast I want in his character as a whole, implying that he is easily misunderstood by others. I also wanted the eyes to be a focal point both in the line work and the colour, so the contrast had to be striking. Admittedly I use eyes as a focal point a lot in my designs (looking at you, Cassie), but I wanted that to add to the strength of his concept rather than just be a preference of mine.

Perseus is incredibly self-conscious of his eyes, believing that his monstrous appearance will scare others merely by looking at them. This is another nod to Medusa, though Perseus can’t turn anyone to stone (much to his relief). This makes him more reserved and reclusive as a result, averting his gaze where possible and quietly keeping to his own business. Even his fighting style is very understated, favouring precision over strength. When he meets others face to face, he closes his eyes immediately, claiming they should not be seen by the faint of heart.

Functionally, Perseus’s eyes move and dilate normally, but appear slightly further apart than a more focused gaze would be, creating a more eerie stare. He may be looking at you, but he’s also looking through you. I hoped this would make him look a bit more pensive as well, and prone to staring while lost in thought.

When he meets Cassie for the first time, Perseus mistakes her for Cassiopeia* and kneels before her like a knight would to a queen.

*Cassiopeia is the mother of Andromeda, who was strapped to a rock to appease the sea monster, Cetus. True to form, Perseus rescued Andromeda by killing the creature.*

After Cassie explains that she has an unusual eye herself, Perseus finally opens his, giving in to his curiosity. He is grateful, if a little confused, for her positive reaction to them. Eventually Cassie convinces him to meet Orion, another zodiac companion. Orion, being blind, will never see Perseus, thus negating his appearance-based fears. Orion also understands Percy’s desire for redemption, being on a similar quest himself as a once-famous hunter. The two quickly become friends, with Perseus offering to “be his eyes” when needed.

Overall I’m very satisfied with the design and concept as a whole. The zodiac companions are minor characters in this story, but I’ve always like stories that have a lot of interesting characters to fill out the extended world, and the Astral Plane is perfect for that. Characters like these are also great for supplementary comics and short stories, and I’ve got some ideas for those later on. :’D

NASA’s Fermi Mission Energizes the Sky With Gamma-ray Constellations

Now scientists with NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope have devised a set of modern constellations constructed from sources in the gamma-ray sky to celebrate the mission’s 10th year of operations. Among them are the Little Prince, the time-warping TARDIS from “Doctor Who,” Godzilla and his heat ray, the antimatter-powered U.S.S. Enterprise from “Star Trek: The Original Series” and the Hulk, the product of a gamma-ray experiment gone awry. “Developing these unofficial constellations was a fun way to highlight a decade of Fermi’s accomplishments,” said Julie McEnery, the Fermi project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “One way or another, all of the gamma-ray constellations have a tie-in to Fermi science.”

Since July 2008, Fermi’s Large Area Telescope (LAT) has been scanning the entire sky each day, mapping and measuring sources of gamma rays, the highest-energy light in the universe. The emission may come from pulsars, nova outbursts, the debris of supernova explosions and giant gamma-ray bubbles located in our own galaxy, or supermassive black holes and gamma-ray bursts — the most powerful explosions in the cosmos — in others. “By 2015, the number of different sources mapped by Fermi’s LAT had expanded to about 3,000 — 10 times the number known before the mission,” said Goddard’s Elizabeth Ferrara, who led the constellation project. “For the first time ever, the number of known gamma-ray sources was comparable to the number of bright stars, so we thought a new set of constellations was a great way to illustrate the point.” The 21 gamma-ray constellations include famous landmarks — such as Sweden’s recovered warship, Vasa, the Washington Monument and Mount Fuji in Japan — in countries contributing to Fermi science. Others represent scientific ideas or tools, from Schrödinger’s Cat — both alive and dead, thanks to quantum physics — to Albert Einstein, Radio Telescope and Black Widow Spider, the namesake of a class of pulsars that evaporate their unfortunate companion stars.

Ferrara and Daniel Kocevski, an astrophysicist now at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, developed a web-based interactive to showcase the constellations, with artwork from Aurore Simonnet, an illustrator at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California, and a map of the whole gamma-ray sky from Fermi. Clicking on a constellation turns on its artwork and name, which includes a link to a page with more information. Just watched the first episode of Star Twinkle Pretty Cure!

It begins with Hikaru looking at the stars, drawing what she sees in a notebook, when she spots a peculiar constellation after seeing a shooting star that she quickly writes down. As she tries to figure out what to call this cute constellation, her notebook suddenly starts glowing and the creature from the constellation emerges from it.

After the opening credits, Hikaru is momentarily stunned by the creature from the book suddenly appearing in her room, before gushing over how cute it is and being generally amazed. Suddenly, the creature pulls her through a portal to somewhere in space, much to her amazement, until she spots a dark-looking planet.

Hikaru wakes up the next morning, initially disappointed to find her adventure was just a dream, only to quickly realize it wasn’t when she spots the creature still in her room. It flies out the window, and she decides to chase after it, after briefly saying good morning to her mother, grandmother and a male relative who I guess is either her father or grandfather, I’m leaning more towards the latter based on apparent age. The male relative seems to worry that Hikaru’s got her head in the clouds, but both mother and grandmother see no problem, thinking she’s just excited about a fun dream she had.

Hikaru heads to a star observatory place, I guess, and tells the old man running the place about what happened, and wonders if the notebook he gave her had special powers. He says it’s just an ordinary notebook he found, but says he made the right call in giving it to Hikaru, and compliments her imagination.

Hikaru continues her search for the cute alien creature, but starts losing energy and stops to eat the lunch her mother and grandmother gave her. As she’s about to eat a donut, the space creature reappears, clearly interested in the donut. Hikaru shares her donut with the cute alien, deciding to call it Fuwa and then drawing the image she saw during her flight through space the previous night.

While the two take a nap in the field, Fuwa has a dream, recalling the mission she was given. Meanwhile, a blue haired girl and an octopus-like alien are being chased by several ufos. Fuwa wakes up and creates another portal for the girl to make it to Earth. Hikaru seems both excited and a little nervous at the prospect of meeting more aliens. The octopus and the girl emerge from the ship, the girl seeming to suffer from motion sickness. Hikaru’s nervousness quickly gives way to more excitement, as she gushes over both the octopus and the girl, the latter who only seems to speak in an alien language.

The octopus, Prunce, explains that he and the girl, Lala, are looking for the Cures, and they got separated from Fuwa who was with them. Prunce is surprised that Hikaru gave Fuwa another name, trying to correct her on what the creature’s proper name is, but Hikaru insists on sticking with Fuwa since the creature’s actual name is too long. Lala seems amused by this.

Suddenly, the other aliens that were chasing them show up, led by an alien who calls himself Kappard. Hikaru is intially excited to meet even more aliens, until she notices that Fuwa is afraid of this other alien group, that has come to capture her. Prunce decides to flee with Lala and Fuwa, and Hikaru, in the heat of the moment, decides to join them. They are surprised to find that Hikaru joined them in the rocket, before showing her the view of space outside.

However, the other aliens catch up, and blast a hole in the window, sucking Hikaru’s notebook and Fuwa into space. Hikaru wants to save Fuwa, but Prunce points out that an Earthling like her can’t survive the vaccum of space. Even so, Hikaru takes the risk, and is protected by Fuwa’s power once more. Kappard is still determined to obtain Fuwa, so their leader can use her power to take over the universe. Hikaru tells him Fuwa is not just an object, and declares that even if she doesn’t fully understand what is going on, she will protect Fuwa.

With her declaration of protection, Fuwa’s power transforms Hikaru’s notebook into the Twinkle Book, and she gains a ink pot pendant and a pen. Using these items, she transforms into Cure Star, while singing about it no less. After transforming, Cure Star is confused over what she just said and did, before Kappard sends a bunch of mooks to attack her. Cure Star manages to jump away, and block their attacks, before actively fighting back as she starts to get the hang of her new abilities. Kappard himself eventually gets involved, saying that even with her powers, he has more experience in space combat than her, but she manages to force him to retreat with a well-placed punching attack, and he tells her she won’t be as lucky this time.

Hikaru and Fuwa return to the hastily fixed ship, where Fuwa gives Hikaru and Lala the ability to understand each other’s language. However, the rocket is still too damaged and falls back to Earth, while the future yellow and purple Cures watch it in the distance, mistaking it for a shooting star.

So, that was the first episode of the new series! I really liked it! The soundtrack is really good so far, and I thought both the opening and ending themes were pretty catchy! Wasn’t expecting Hikaru to sing during her transformation sequence, though. I thought it was cute, though, and I’m curious to see if the other Cures will sing as well, and then they’ll all sing together during group transformations? Could be cool!

Anyways, I really like Hikaru so far, and I’m already seeing the theme of imagination that will certainly be one of the main themes of this season. I’ve always been someone with a big imagination myself, so I’m looking forward to seeing how this season turns out. I also like how Cure Star’s first battle continued the tradition of “newly transformed pink Cure jumps much higher than expected upon gaining her powers”, but this time in space.

I’m curious about learning more about the aliens. Like, are the aliens Kappard summoned like this show’s equivalent of the Sunackies and Choiarks from HeartCatch Pretty Cure and Happiness Charge Pretty Cure? And will they summon monsters of the week like other Pretty Cure villains? Or will they do something different with these villains? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing what happens next, and presumably getting to know more about Lala in the next episode!
