Not art related i just wanna share what happened irl recently

So one midnight someone reported that they can't ssh into our lab's server, and the next day i saw (on a physical screen) that a process ate all 96GB of our RAM and our server was out-of-memory-ed into oblivion. Apparently a student ran a process called mem_eater, for some kind of homework i suppose

Apparently they wanna allocate 30GB of memory and hold it for a minute. Dont know why but i can see that from the comment

Wrote a fork bomb and ran it on our server

They didnt write exit() at the end of the child process code. The child process does not exit after a minute and instead goes into the next loop. My quick math tells me they are gonna have roughly 2⁴⁸⁰ processes and allocate 256MB * 2⁴⁸⁰ of memory. It fucked up our server in 30 minutes along with other students that were training their models on that server

Dont be a fucking sys admin. Also be careful with fork() for fucks sake

Can’t help but remember my senior year job fair in college which I helped ORGANIZE by the way and I had fabulous grades, I met with all the reps that came and gave them tours and answered their questions and brought them refreshments and my classmates ended the day being offered like accounting positions and marketing positions and international market positions and the rep from cracker barrel asked if I wanted to be a hostess there on weekends when I didn’t have class. So like something is wrong with me.

Like the whole "DOOM runs on anything" meme is funny sure but technically you can run any program on any machine that has the processor, memory, and storage space for it. You may need to tweak some thing here and there to get it fully operational but really that's mostly what it hinges on.

I turned my windows netbook into a Debian server and then turned *that* into cloud-based storage I could dump and share and run any files I wanted to off my internet connection when I was in college by tying an external hard drive to it using an always-on connection. I still technically have the hard drive but I sold the netbook a long time ago. I also turned my MacBook from college into an always-on minecraft server for my college friends before Microsoft decided to give us actual multi-player support.

I also turned my MacBook into a windows OS emulator when I wanted to game because I got annoyed that Mac ports are usually poopoobad quality. So I would turn my MacBook on and then load up my windows os inside of the Mac os and then actually load the game.

Like yeah I went to school for programming but I actually learned how to do most of that as a kid because my dad had a computer that had no GUI, it was all command prompt and DOS. There are times when my current windows computers are annoying me because they won't do the thing I told them to do so I load up dos and then effectively go "I wasn't asking" at it.

Sorry to break character, and especially sorry if this is how you find out I'm not an official blog, but I'd like to ask for everyone's help again! You may remember me being annoying about r/place (a collaborative art piece and de facto diplomatic game hosted by Reddit) last year, and I hate to say it, but they're bringing it back. While it is almost certainly an attempt at distracting from their API crisis, we're planning to have fun with it anyway!
