For context on THAT, if you’re not already aware, I hosted a stream series for a while called CPU Kerfuffle, which was a series of Smash Tourneys with Level 9 CPUs, with each character given their own names/backstories that myself and a lot of others in the server had grown attached to.

During my hiatus, I had been checking out other fighting game cutscenes like Injustice 2, Blazblue and MK and loved seeing the unique dialogues between characters. As a fun practice for dialogue and character writing, I started the first ever Non-Canon Curiosity Tournament (or NCCT for short) where I randomly set up a bracket of characters and came up with pre-match dialogue and victory quotes for whoever won.

The first NCCT was just that. Me generating quotes. But then the second NCCT came around, and I had an idea. Within the story of CPUK, the NCCT’s took place in the dreams of the contestants. However I wanted to take things one step further. Within the dreams there was a ceramic Nelson. If any of the characters picked up the Nelson….

Then the members of the Discord could directly communicate with the characters of CPUK. This eventually led to what I can honestly say is some of the most interesting writing I’ve ever had the pleasure of putting out there.

It’s been archived by members of the Discord with frankly immaculate formatting, and I think the Discord has actually been doing live reading nights over these last few months! (I plan to wait until it’s all said and done before I listen to it since apparently it’s going to be edited down)

Wukong wraps his arms slightly tighter to keep Y/N closer, “ I know. I’m just…. Worried about what might be coming for us, and that it might mess up or take away what we have. That I might… lose y-” Wukong trails off choking up the tiniest bit looking at Y/N.

Y/N looks at him so touched before tilting to press a loving kiss to his lips before pulling back to look at him, “ No one knows what will happen in the future, but for right now we’re here and we have each other and our friends. We’re ok.” Y/N says “ And I’m not going anywhere.”. Wukong looks at her/him/them with such adoration it makes her/his/their heart ache.

“ Now come on,” Y/N says moving towards the bedroom smiling at him over her/his/their shoulder “ We’d better start getting ready for MK’s training today. You know he’ll be pouty if you’re late”, Wukong chuckles as he watches Y/N disappear into the bedroom to get dressed for the day.

After the training session and everyone surprising Monkey King with his newly rebuilt home, Wukong asks Y/N to say over in the new house. Early into the morning Wukong holds Y/N close in his arms as they both are fast asleep and Y/N wakes up to see a glowing light coming from beneath the bed, “ Wukong.” Y/N says worriedly starting to shake him awake for only a second before they both fall through a portal.

personally, i like to imagine him as someone who does not care for egotistical and heroic figures that lean on the celestial’s favor. maybe he is like y/n and yawns with his books at a Wukong concert Macky feels like a guy who would laugh in Wukong’s face if Wukong introduced himself as the Monkey King and then call himself the Macaque King (see what I did there :3)

Just to clear things up, No Axel and Bowie aren’t romantically involved with Wayne here. There also isn’t any love triangle happening or at least the seeds for it being planted.

The cast (especially Bowie) simply isn’t fond of Wayne and Julia’s budding relationship mostly due to how unbearable the latter was to be with when they got to stay with her last season at the resort as she got out of the game midway. (late pre-merge)

Since Julia got kicked off very early this time in a double elimination (along with Chase) for simpky not being liked, the cast thought that this was the perfect time to warn Wayne about being with her as he wasn’t able to witness exactly how she was at playa for making a considerably deep run last season.

Bowie coming from a place of concern as the boyfriend of Raj, who is Wayne’s best friend, orchestrates a plan on how they could get him to lose interest in her as he doesn't want him to go through any potential mistreatment from her like they did.

Normally, Bowie doesn't meddle with the relationships of other people nless he can get something out of it or it concerns someone he has connections with.

and maybe the thought of potentially having to attend double dates with the person he hates the most was enough for him to hurl.

Now come the images. As Wayne was thinking about Julia, Axel was simply not having it anymore. As his friend and the only person left who has the guts to tell him directly what the cast thought of her, told him that a guy as nice as him shouldn’t waste his time on someone like her and he deserves someone much nicer. (Much like in canon, Wayne is well liked while Julia is despised so that greatly affects how they see the pair in this AU.)

Wayne retorts that there’s something more to her that they just haven't seen yet. (Hence the Basic Straining edits)

The second image is Julia finally catching onto what the cast was trying to do, which also sets up her more ruthless approach to the game and to the rest of the cast when she returns.

And the final image is Bowie realising what he’s done after witnessing Julia storming off.

Since there was an unexpected tie for winners (matchup 13), I have decided not to run a bonus poll to determine the extra contestant.

As a consolation, however, I will run a different week-long bonus poll just for fun with the four would-have-been candidates, the first bonus poll’s winner, and a few fan favorites. Meanwhile, Zack—beaten and battered from his fight against an army of troopers—hobbles across the wastelands into Midgar with a mako-poisoned Cloud on his shoulder. Though he has managed to escape death for now, the ominous rift in the sky gives him little reason to rejoice.

That is hardly the only threat facing the world, however. The Shinra Resistance Committee, backed by Wutai’s interim government, declares war on the company; figures shrouded in black robes carry with them the corpse of Jenova, a veritable calamity from another world; and the Weapons—fierce and monstrous guardians of the planet—have recently awakened.

Amid this chaos, Sephiroth has set his plan in motion, thus ensuring myriad fates intertwine and are birthed anew.

An ex-SOLDIER: first class, Cloud came to Midgar to start a new chapter of his life as a mercenary. At the invitation of his childhood friend, Tifa, he accepts a job with Avalanche. Together, they confront Shinra, ultimately leaving Midgar behind in pursuit of Sephiroth and the truth─a quest which will lead them to defy destiny itself.

He fights by switching between modes specializing in mobility and offense. A single swipe of his huge sword can knock several foes off their feet at once. Some of his abilities also allow him to take the fight to the air.

Barret Wallace (voiced by John Eric Bentley in English, Masato Funaki in Japanese)

“This is the planet we’re talkin’ about! Y’all know she’s gonna pour her heart and soul into this fight!”

The leader of an independent Avalanche cell, Barret spearheads an operation to take down Shinra’s mako reactors. He pays a hefty price for this, however, when the company retaliates, and his comrades die in the crossfire. Armed with the memories of his lost friends and the newfound knowledge of Sephiroth’s plans, he departs Midgar in hope of saving the planet and safeguarding a future for his daughter Marlene.

What he lacks in speed, he makes up for in both sturdiness and strength, converting his anger toward Shinra into raw firepower. He employs a variety of ranged attacks, from rapid-fire salvos to powerful explosions, which allow him to strike foes high in the air or across the battlefield.

Tifa Lockhart (voiced by Britt Baron in English, Ayumi Ito in Japanese)

“Ever wish you could just snap your fingers and forget the worst stuff?”

Though a loyal member of Avalanche—an underground organization that opposes Shinra—Tifa nevertheless questions the group’s extremist tactics, struggling to reconcile her cause with her conscience. This internal conflict reaches a fever pitch when her group’s actions effectively lead to the fall of the Sector 7 plate. Racked with guilt, she leaves Midgar in search of a new path to tread.

She strings together swift combos while utilizing a variety of martial art techniques. Her ATB fills quickly, allowing for the use of multiple abilities in rapid succession. She also boasts several skills that deal more damage to airborne or staggered foes.

Aerith Gainsborough (voiced by Briana White in English, Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese)

“Just look at it all… A living, breathing planet. Even after everything we’ve done to it, it’s still going strong.”

A flower seller who lives in the Sector 5 undercity and the last remaining descendant of the Cetra, a people known for communing with the planet. Shinra takes her prisoner in their efforts to reach the Cetra’s foretold “promised land,” but Cloud and company come to her rescue. She escapes Midgar and embarks on a journey into the outside world of which she has long dreamed.

Utilizing the power of magic, she casts spells from a safe distance and launches attacks that home in on her foes. She can also conjure beneficial wards and warp between them, as well as restore the party’s HP with her limit break.

Red XIII (voiced by Max Mittelman in English, Kappei Yamaguchi in Japanese)

“I may be clad in fur…but that doesn’t mean I’ll purr.”

Red XIII is a beast with a flaming tail, crimson fur, deadly claws, and the ability to speak. Cloud and company help him escape Professor Hojo’s clutches, and he decides to join them on their journey. His species is known for their long life spans, and he is no exception. As this Cosmo Canyon native is the eldest member of the party, he offers its members words of wisdom from time to time.

He sets upon foes with an unrelenting assault, laying into them with a beastly ferocity. Guarding against incoming attacks will feed his Vengeance gauge. Once it is full, he can unleash his inner beast, but sufficient skill is required to maximize its potential.

Yuffie Kisaragi (voiced by Suzie Yeung in English, Yumi Kakazu in Japanese)

“If I win, you get the honor of serving yours truly!”

A member of Wutai’s elite corps of ninja operatives, Yuffie infiltrates Midgar on a mission to steal the “ultimate materia” from Shinra. Her plan ends in disaster, as she fails to claim the materia and loses her partner Sonon in the struggle. Just as working alone begins to take its toll on her, however, Cloud’s group comes into the picture.

—Weapon: Throwing Star

Using her throwing star and ninja skills, she excels at both long- and close-range combat. Elemental ninjutsu allows her to exploit enemies’ weaknesses without relying on spells. She also keeps opponents on their toes with a variety of aerial attacks and tricky techniques.

Cait Sith (voiced by Paul Tinto in English, Hideo Ishikawa in Japanese)

“Alright, everyone! By popular request: a fortune or two to steer you true!”

A wisecracking, feline-shaped robot often seen poised atop his big moogle pal. One of the Gold Saucer’s most popular mascots, he is well loved for his fortune telling—a service he also offers to Cloud and friends. His adorable appearance also belies access to a surprising amount of insider intel on Shinra.

Sephiroth (voiced by Tyler Hoechlin in English, Toshiyuki Morikawa in Japanese)

“Don’t be afraid. It’s not death—it’s a homecoming.”

A former SOLDIER: 1st class of legendary renown, he is said to have died in the line of duty in Nibelheim five years ago. This is proven untrue when he appears at the Shinra Building and absconds with a research specimen known as “Jenova.” He now toys with Cloud at every opportunity, seeking to change the course of destiny and rule the planet.

Zack Fair (voiced by Caleb Piece in English, Kenichi Suzumura in Japanese)

“I dunno—hopes? Dreams, maybe? Something like that! So long as we’ve got those—and hold on tight and never let go.”

Zack may have worked with Sephiroth as a SOLDIER: 1st class, but he trained under a different operator, and it is from this man that he both learned to take pride in his work and received his iconic buster sword. After a grueling battle in which he overcomes the odds and cheats death, Zack returns to Midgar—where he hopes to see his love Aerith—with a mako-poisoned Cloud in tow.

Abilities

Magic materia can be set in weapons and armor to enable the use of spells such as Fire and Cure. Casting spells consumes both ATB charges as well as MP.

Summons

Setting summoning materia will grant access to the power of the gods. A horse-riding swordsman who brandishes an enormous blade known as Zantetsuken. He gallops toward foes and sends them flying with a single, sweeping slash.

Powerful attacks in which two characters team up to turn the tide of battle. I thought about Huebei and thought of a couple of really cute ideas.

First and foremost, I can see archeology and paleantology being a special interest of hers even going into her adulthood. Girl wants to work on archeology dig sites and stuff and loves the museum. In Soft Boiled Wukong asks MK to help him out by taking her to a trip to a museum while he and the rest of the Noodle Gang set up a surprise party for her on the island the first time her birthday comes up after the monkey family met the group.

Second... and I don't really know WHY, but I can see her being a dancer. Maybe a ribbon dancer or something, but I think of her dancing gracefully as her tall, lanky teenage self and as her buffer adult self and think,'Yeah, that fits.' I can only assume it's the bit of Macaque's dad's influence that she likes performing. Goodness knows she didn't get it from Wukong! Although he can be just as artistic too and as someone who is artistic from an artistic family, I find that if an inheritance trait, even if my style of art is completely different from my siblings' preferred media. We all joke I'm the only one who can draw even tho all the rest of them can play music, something I frankly am terrible at no matter how much I practice altho that could be the stage fright speaking

Third, I can totally see her and Red being inseparable as babies. They were born not far apart in age and basically have similar powers to each other, whenever Uwkong needed a break he'd go to DBK for babysitting and vice versa up until their falling out and Wukong being forced to seal DBK away. It's for this reason I imagine she would like to sneak out to Uncle Bull's resting place just to be near him again. She knows her dad didn't really have a choice, but she misses Uncle Bull and Red. She makes sure Red never sees her or knows she's there when the Bull Family visit.

The first thing Wukong teaches her, besides how to control her lazer eyes, is the transformations. This was a bit of a necessity since, during the journey and shortly afterwards, Wukong would find himself in a situation where demons and celestials of all walks in life would try to sneak onto the island to search him and his cub out. While most were just curious, a few beings did not mean them well, but luckily for Wukong, they only ever searched for a monkey and his baby... they never searched for a sparrow or a tiger. Fresh from the Journey, visitors were the last things Wukong wanted to deal with!

Yuebei quickly starts to see MK as a sort of big brother figure, in spite if her jealousy that he of all beings got picked to be her father's heir and not her. It didn't matter to her that she had explicitly told her father once she never wanted to follow in his footsteps, that staff is her BIRTHRIGHT! Even so, the first time MK got hurt in front of her (Calabash episode actually) she near lost her shit.

Haha! I do love having Yuebei be interested in bone-based sciences due to her literary association with bones. She was def a "dinosaur-kid" who would run up and down beaches, digging up little shell fossils to bring home and show to her baba. Wukong isn't 100% sure what a trilobite is, but his cub is super excited to explain them to him when she found a weird fossilized pillbug. Wukong just loves that his babygirl has such a passionate interest in the world.

As Yuebei gets older, she goes through phases of hyperfixating on different archaeological eras and cultures. As someone who has an ornament cabinet full of Egyptian god statues from one such phase, I can imagine a few sections of the Stone Palace treasury has been organized so Yuebei can display her interests.

I can imagine (even pre-series) Tang running into Yuebei at the museum, the little glamoured demon just fascinated by a display/diorama on Tang-era trade routes. The scholar thinks its the cutest thing ever! The two become sort of nerd buddies once Yuebei warms up to the Noodle Gang.

And ooo ribbon dancer Yuebei!!

I have watched some performances, and many of the dancers are buff af.

I can see Wukong struggling to find a creative or physical outlet his daughter would enjoy, only to turn around to find the cub dancing with a stray phoenix feather. He sighs, knowing that the theatrical spirit of Macaque has lived on in some way. Heavens know Yuebei is far more confident on stage than Wukong will ever be!

Yuebei and Red Son were def tight as cousins well up until Bull got imprisoned, and they still have an "older sibling, younger sister" relationship in the modern day. PIF and Red never held Wukong's actions against his child, and if the little rebel liked to visit her auntie and cousin without her baba's permission, then they would accommodate her.

I love the idea of Wukong training his daughter some key powers, like the transformations. Yuebei's different transformations tend to be dark furred/scaled/feathered with little red-orange flecks. Almost like a certain Macaque's... one thing she has trouble changing is the age of the animal she turns into. She's almost always a juvenile of the species no matter how hard she tries.

Yuebei, showing off: "Watch this! I can turn into a tiger!" MK, excited: "Sweet!" Yuebei: (*transforms into a tiger cub*) MK, wondering if that was intentional: "Umm..." Yuebei, furious: "Not. A. Word."

And ofc the baby girl had a problem with her lazer eyes shooting off whenever she had a tantrum - so Wukong had to devise a way to help her control those early on. Welding goggles and sunglasses help a lot on his end, but Guanyin also helped teach younger Yuebei meditation techniques so she could calm down in the moment and avoid triggering a shot.

In the end, even if Yuebei naturally developed a lot of her baba's powers, she sort of resents that MK was chosen as his successor and not her. But she also *knows* it killed her baba to give the Nüwa-made cub up to give him a "normal" life. A life that she couldn't have...

She wants MK to realise his responsibility and not waste it. But also wants to be a kid like he does. The two have to work together to make a balance.

Always a painful delight to reread Monkeying Around, but now i have a question of a "if" escenario, how horrible it would be if the G&M existed in the Au where Mac reseted himself, would they think that was Mac reincarnation until they talked with mk and wk, or would they never know since they might be somewhere in the world?👀

Alright then let's try and see how it might play out! Forgive me but this is probably going to get long and rambling!

So the first problem is what AU this is set in because MT!Mac and BtF!Mac have wildly different back stories - MT!Mac coming to the island as an adult and BtF!Mac being born there. Then we've got the problem that season 4 isn't canon to BtF and the fact there is a bonkers plot unfolding in the background of MT and that bonkers plot won't allow for a reset like in BtF.

Another problem is that BtF does actually have a fully fleshed out storyline - I've just resisted the urge to write it when I have so many other WIPs on the go - so I know it but no-one else does 😅 so bear with me as I try and explain elements of it 😅

Ok, so in slamming these AUs together this is what I've got:

- MS, MD is canon

- But most pre-LMK fics that involve the Spirits of Wǔxíng, other Celestial Primates or any other non-canon characters or elude to something being up with Mac are not.

- Season 4 hasn't happened and MK doesn't have a monkey form

- After centuries of searching, it is confirmed that Mac is dead when Wukong goes to ask Guānyīn to check the Dìyù for him as per MT. But this time she actually gets an answer. She tells him how he died and eventually Wukong tells the G&Ms the truth. So the G&Ms are no longer searching but they still travel.

Ok, so that's our starting point. Now a bit of info on what Mac Jr is up to after BtF!Mac resets himself.

He's out there trying to live his best life - travelling about and putting on shows using a range of shapeshifted disguises. He also develops a sort of one-sided parent-child relationship with BtF!Mac - viewing this man he's never met as his parent rather than as who he used to be. Someone that "died" to bring him into the world and did all he could to give him the best start. And someone he grapples with being separate from but also wanting to prove himself to.

He does have a little knowledge of who the G&Ms are because BtF!Mac left him his, admittedly selective, memoirs to help him avoid making the same mistakes he did but he doesn't know much or that they're still alive or that they were searching for his old man for so long. (In BtF the G&Ms are actually dead but for this remixed AU obviously they're as close to their MT counterparts as I can get them!)

In BtF, MK and Wukong accidentally find Mac, in disguise, putting on a show in the middle of a town they're checking out for hero reasons and that basically kicks off the plot of Wukong refusing to believe BtF!Mac is really gone for good and MK deciding he's going to teach Mac Jr how to be a good guy. MK's plot is a lot more lighthearted but it follows Mac Jr becoming his own person. Wukong's plot... 😬 Let's just say it doesn't end with reconciliation.

Alright so that's us set up to finally answer your question 😅

So there's a couple ways this could go - the original plot of Wukong and MK finding Mac Jr or one, or all, of the G&Ms finding out in the world first.

OG plot first - Once Wukong believes that this isn't actually some con Mac is running, then he is torn over whether he needs to "fix" Mac or not. He doesn't feel conflicted about it in BtF, he's bringing back OG!Mac, but in this version he's more concerned about the G&Ms and doesn't know what would be better for them - the Mac they knew but bitter and angry and damaged beyond repair or this new Mac who's happier but is fundamentally not the same person. (He doesn't care what would be better for Mac Jr or what he thinks.)

The decision is eventually made for him because the G&Ms come back after finally hearing about MK and it doesn't matter what Wukong tells MK, MK eventually will tell them about Mac Jr.

And now the G&Ms.

They won't think he's a reincarnation because MK & Wukong will have filled them in on the LBD plot but they are going to have a lot of feelings about it. Mac Jr initially feels very awkward and doesn't want to be around them because obviously they're very upset at seeing "him" after such a long time and then that he doesn't remember them and seemingly doesn't want to.

What would eventually happen is that they would come to view Mac Jr as OG!Mac's kid, ergo their nephew, and he would eventually let them see everything that OG!Mac left for him, including everything he wrote, etc. It wouldn't be smooth sailing but eventually they all have a very good relationship.

So the other plot, without the intervention of Wukong and MK, has a similar sort of end game with them accepting Mac Jr as his own person but the initial meeting would probably be a lot more dramatic and stressful. Because it dawns on Mac Jr who these monkeys must be and he decides it's safer to book it. The G&Ms don't know who this guy is but he's the spitting image of their brother and has his powers so he's getting hunted down no matter what.

(Another difference between MT and BtF is that MT!Mac and Wukong start life as infants but in BtF!Mac and Wukong are born adults so it could be a really interesting twist to explore a baby!Mac version of events but let's just stick to the adult Mac canon here!)

Reincarnation does not usually result in someone being born again as the same person but given that Macaque and Wukong aren't normal monkeys - they couldn't rule it out. All sorts of theories were thrown about as they tried to catch Mac Jr - including that he hadn't actually died and Heaven had lied to Wukong, sentient clone, that Mac had somehow created a back up of himself if he ate it, etc.

Eventually they catch him and Mac Jr is very much "I'm not who you think I am" and takes them to the place OG!Mac reset himself to prove it. And from there it follows a similar trajectory to option 1.

To be honest, option 2 is a lot easier for everyone involved because it lacks Wukong, and to a lesser extent, MK's involvement but eventually they get involved when the G&Ms return home but at that point they've already declared themselves aunts and uncles and everyone else just needs to deal with it.

I appreciate the fact they know OG!Mac is dead changes things significantly but there's no reason for them not to be able to figure that out without MT's plot, although I suppose LBD could have made a move a lot sooner and complicated things 🤔 but while it would draw things out a bit, again they'd reach the same ending, albeit with a lot more grieving involved.

It was trickier to combine these AUs than I thought it would be - they're are particular plot points in both that contradict each other and certain elements effect characters and their relationships to each other so there was a bit of cherry picking! But it was a lot of fun to think through it! But hopefully all of that made some sort of sense!

My absolute favourite has got to be Shed Skin by Penguinabominations and snowxhanyouxqueen

It’s a fanfiction from the Yakuza franchise and is set within an alternative Version of Yakuza 0. An absolutely fantastic read, a gorgeous writing style and intriguing characterisation of Kiryu and Majima. Highly recommend it, but please read the tags first for potential Triggers.

This fanfic man… It lowkey broke me. Another Yakuza fanfiction this time focussing on my favourite character from the franchise: Ichiban Kasuga. The fanfic heavily discusses themes of SA but in a respectful manner. But still only read this if you are in a mentally safe place. But like shed skin, this fan fiction NAILS the characterisation of the cast, with its dialogue sounding like it could be straight from the game itself.

In the Twin Stone AU does Macaque and Wukong still get along in the current timeline or is it still the same as in the show? And how does this affect MK?

Funny cuz i dont have a 'current timeline' in twin stones. Story's mostly set in the past for now.

Season 1-3, they're not!!! They're very much not!!!!!!!

Post-season 3 and pre-season 4, they're eehhhh. The initial malice is sorta gone, but they're really indifferent to eachother.

For mk, he was torn. He's disheartened to find out two people he considers as family want to tear each other's throats out. He knew that they ended off on a bad note, none of the two want to tell him how bad though. He hates it that they don't tell him anything.

It's not his business to fix them though, that's for them to decide, it doesn't change how he sees them. He tries not to get involve in it, only ever there to advice or mediate.

Mk was really ecstatic post-season 4. He's more comfortable inviting them both to hang out a lot now without the fear of one of them going out of line.
