The Villain of Romance - Episode 7

Now that I’m all caught up with episodes of See You in my 19th Life, let’s get back to this one, which I think has ended by the time I was watching the other drama. I’m happy to jump into something light hearted once again, after all the drama that unraveled in the other show.

Oh that’s right. Last time they introduced a new sunbae and that guy seemed really suspicious to me. After giving a ride back to Heejae and hearing about Yoojin, he seems even more like bad news.

Hyeon confesses his feelings to get rejected. He still wants to be Yoon’s library boy though.

During lunch, Yoojin cheers up Heejae about writing his novel and owning 3 imported cars. He’s prohibited from going to any meetings before he sends the summary of his novel to her to review it. Then the new sunbae comes in the cafeteria so Hee Jae calls him over. When she hears his name, Yoojin starts feeling very unwell... I’m a little afraid of the backstory between those two. Hopefully nothing too terrible and nothing that will trigger me.

Yoojin skips class because she’s still unwell ever since she saw Jinwook. Heejae covers for her with the teacher. They have a group assignment and Jinwook offers to have Heejae and Yoojin in his group since no one wants to be teamed up with Yoojin. When he informs Yoojin about it, she gets mad. Heejae doesn’t understand and asks a senior student that is friend with Yoojin and learns that Jinwook and Yoojin used to be a famous campus couple two years ago. I figured that he was her ex, it was kind of obvious. But what happened for her to react that badly?

Yoojin wants to leave the group, but Heejae pitches in, revealing in front of everyone that they are exes. And he says he’s okay with it. But maybe she’s not okay being with her ex? Like what if something really bad happened between them? Honestly, I wouldn’t ever want to do a group assignment with one of my exes. I’m way over them, but not over the trauma it caused me.

Go Yoon receives a lot of backlash on the internet and Hyeon is worried about her even though she rejected him and wants him to take a break so he can set aside his feelings for her.

Heejae ends up going crazy with jealousy and it peaks when he notices that she had an one hour long phone call with Jinwook. He’s going overboard. And he breaks up with her.

Obviously, they leave us on that cliffhanger. It kind of went downhill really fast for me. This episode isn’t my favourite, it wasn’t as light hearted than the previous ones and that’s a little bit why I signed in for this show.

Commentary: In South Korea, the mere mention of feminism can end a conversation

MELBOURNE: One of my former colleagues from Ewha Womans University recently went on a blind date in Seoul. Her date was elated to learn that she attended one of the finest institutions in the country. However, things took a turn when my colleague mentioned her research areas: Gender and women’s studies.

“My research interests literally scared that man away; luckily it was not me,” she told me.

That’s a bit of an odd reaction by her date, you might think. Not so in South Korea, where gender equality and the feminism movement are polarising issues.

Korean men generally admire the prestige associated with Ewha Womans University graduates, yet they are simultaneously unsettled by the very academic pursuits that empower these women.

It reflects a contradictory blend of admiration and apprehension, where respect for the graduates’ intellect (jiseong) clashes with unease towards feminism. The tension highlights the complex dynamics of gender relations in modern Korean society, where women advocating for equality are sometimes shunned or even targeted.

In the presidential election two years ago, conservative candidate Yoon Suk Yeol courted “anti-feminist” male voters and pledged to abolish the Gender Equality Ministry, accusing it of treating men like “potential sex criminals”.

The 2024 World Economic Forum global gender gap report ranks South Korea 94th out of 146 countries in an index that examines economic opportunities, education, health and political leadership.

BURNING SUN SEX SCANDAL

The situation is further exacerbated by rising violence against women. According to a 2023 report in The Korea Times, crimes against females rose to 28,228 in 2021 from 16,006 in 2007. Additionally, 86.7 per cent of victims of violent crimes in Korea were women from 2011 to 2020.

The Burning Sun sex scandal of 2019 that involved high-profile K-pop stars is an example of the issues plaguing South Korean society.

The scandal, centred around the Burning Sun nightclub in Gangnam, Seoul managed by former megastar Seungri from BigBang, involved drug-fuelled sexual exploitation, gang-rape and illegal filming and sharing of those acts by well-known figures such as singer-songwriter Jung Joon-young and celebrity Choi Jong-hoon. The scandal also revealed collusion between various celebrities and the police.  

The sexually explicit videos and images of unconscious women were disturbing, and reflected a pattern of dehumanising, incapacitating, loathing, and objectifying of women.

Seungri was convicted on multiple charges including procuring prostitutes for potential investors and served an 18-month jail sentence. He was released in February 2023. Choi was released in 2021 after serving two years and six months, and Jung was released in March this year after serving five years.

The case returned to the spotlight recently after a BBC documentary released in May revealed the high personal price suffered by the two female journalists who exposed the scandal.

Viewed as feminists waging an unsubstantiated assault against innocent K-pop stars, Kang Kyung-yoon and Park Hyo-sil were harassed both online and offline. They endured abusive comments, death threats and phone calls in the early hours. During this time, Park suffered two miscarriages.

ANTI-FEMINIST BACKLASH

The various forms of violence against the Burning Sun victims as well as the journalists stem from a mix of anti-feminism and deep-rooted structural problems.

Women’s studies in South Korea can be traced back to the 1970s, but the feminist movement in the country largely began to ride the wave of the global “MeToo” movement in the 2010s.

In 2016, the senseless killing of a woman in a toilet by a man near Gangnam Station catalysed a powerful feminist awakening in South Korea. The man told police he had chosen a woman as his victim “because women have always ignored me”. The attack became seen as a symbol of misogyny.

From that moment, Korean women began to rally and harness their collective strength, fully embracing the worldwide feminist momentum. It was during this period that communities like Megalia and Womad emerged. However, their form of feminism was associated with radicalism and hostility specifically towards men, turning feminism into a “dirty word” in the country.

In November 2023, a man in his 20s launched an indiscriminate attack on a part-time worker at a convenience store simply because she had short hair, labelling her a feminist.

This reflects a broader societal tendency to stigmatise women. Men often blame women for their own struggles, such as low marriage rates, without acknowledging structural issues in a patriarchal society.

In July, Seoul City councillor Kim Ki-duck was criticised after he made unsubstantiated comments connecting a rise in male suicide attempts to an increasingly "female-dominant society". He argued that women’s increased participation in the workforce over the years had edged men out and made it more difficult for them to find marriage partners.

According to a survey in 2021, 84.1 per cent of women in their 20s believe that discrimination against women is serious in South Korean society. Conversely, 78.9 per cent of South Korean men in their 20s feel discrimination against their gender is serious too.

To navigate gender conflicts in South Korea today, my former colleague - and others like her - will need to keep advocating for change. Perhaps one day, friends will be able to speak freely among each other about gender issues without being afraid of judgment.

when lucas for example got into his scandal it seems he was generally almost fully accepted back by most kpop fans compared to seunghoon riize who was treated as tho he comitted a crime so what makes one idol more favoured than another in terms of what sort of reaction or pity they get from kpop fans? same with seungri who did worse than those two and he is still doing shit and god knows what in france (of all places)

What would be Jungkook's reaction to Seungri in the Burning Sun?Would he be relieved that Jennie didn't hang out with him or just want to fight him because of all of the times Seungri try to force a friendship with Jennie? (aka lure her in)

Hmmmm if this were to happen I see him disgusted and furious about the situation. As well as being disappointed that he would even go this low. I also see a mixture of both. Relief she didn’t go anywhere near him thanks to her situational awareness & gut feeling and wanting to beat his ass for trying to get her involved in that horrible mess. Bangtan, her friends and loved ones wouldn’t even want to imagine the what ifs and would be even more protective of her.

From watching the documentary and seeing tweets about everything, I even see Seungri wanting Jennie to be a guest DJ at his parties which she’d decline many times. She should feel happy and excited a big bang member wanted her to DJ for them but because it was seungri, she didn’t feel comfortable.

And with a foreigner like her, I bet some of his nasty ass business partners would want a “foreign” experience if she was lured in 😒 after she informs G-Dragon about his persistence in wanting to hang out and how uncomfortable she is, he’d firmly tell Seungri to stay away from her along with the rest of Big Bang, which will get him to back off. He’d do a lot to make sure he doesn’t go anywhere near Jennie again to talk. I see Jennie confiding in G-Dragon about everything first since she didn’t want to worry the members. But after getting things settled, she’d tell the guys everything and reassure her she was OK thanks to G-Dragon and the rest of Big Bang on Seungri’s case about her.

I’m not even surprised. I said this was gonna happen. I knew he wasn’t gonna be in jail for long. South Korea does not take crimes against women seriously. Regular everyday guys are able to get away with a slap on the wrist, so i expected it to be even easier for a celebrity.

When I see those reactions for G-Dragon, the change in people's comments right now makes me a little sad. G dragon was the most desired and admired idol in his era. Everyone respected and admired him. He was quite successful, bold and talented. It's not as strong as it used to be, but he still has an impact. And now, when bts became the most famous and v became the most popular of the group, people started insulting gd in a very ugly way after the tae-jennie rumors. No matter what anyone says, GD is a respected person. If the current idols are running now, they owe it to the fact that 2ne1 and bigbang walked first. Also, considering how much difficulty gd has been exposed to, his reckless attitude today is not interesting either. Who deserves what or who doesn't deserve someone is not to someone's opinion. Let's just respect.

We can't deny that big bang and Gd have made an impact on the kpop industry, but i think the majority of the respect he lost is because he supports ot5, and with that people interpret that he still supports seungri. I think that is the issue here, the support he has shown to someone that fuck really bad

So I got into a rabbit hole of 2ne1 reactions on youtube, so I was really in my feelings for them, and since it's 2ne1 I started thinking about other yg artists too. Obv I started thinking about bigbang. I follow 2ne1 and member tags here on tumblr so sometimes I'd see posts here, but they aren't actually that popular here so it's very few new pics. I suddenly thought the worst and immediately went to seungri tags and guuurrlll, I can't believe it, people are posting new pics of him post prison ☠️ girl groups will disband in the best terms and still lose popularity but boy groups could be put into prison and they'd still be waiting for their oppars. That's it I really put myself in that position and I needed to vent lmao

Trust me, I feel exactly the same like. It's not even an exaggeration at this point to say that every single one of the biggest boy groups out there, from TVXQ!, to SUPER JUNIOR, to BIGBANG, to SHINee, to EXO, have had or continue to have at least one criminal (charged or not) in their lineups like... BTS next??? The brainrot is real.

Remember when YG used to do a Who's Next? for their comebacks? They should have one for who's getting charged with a crime at this point

he’s a light sleeper so when he saw you wincing and groaning in your sleep, he sat up concerned. you’d a history of lucid dreams and he knew sometimes the nightmares get too vivid for you to handle. he jerked you lightly, waking you up. on waking up and seeing him in front of him after dreaming about him leaving you on your doorstep, you couldn’t stop yourself and hugged him immediately. hot tears flowing down your eyes.

he hummed “shh” while rubbing your back. his grip around your, now shaking figure, tight but not suffocating.

“baby, you want some water?”

you shook your head before pulling back and kissing him, a short but passionate kiss.

“promise me, you won’t ever leave me.” you looked him in the eye.

he hesitated for a second because, frankly, you two had never talked about the future before. nothing was ever planned, you two had decided to just go with the flow and not rush into things so when you asked for a commitment, a lifetime commitment, he was taken aback but he knew in his heart that you were the person he wanted to spend eternities with so he nodded.

“is something wrong?”

you were sobbing and couldn’t speak coherently, “y-you’re so aw-away.”

“but i’m right here with you!” when the manager walked towards him to escort him he showed his hand and motioned to be left alone.

everyone left the dressing room and the event manager declared a small five minutes delay to the fans.

“i’m so sorry for calling you like this but i had a nightmare. i saw that you didn’t want me anymore and so you just left me. i woke up and you weren’t beside me. i’m so sorry for bothering you.”

when you’d calmed down a bit, he walked to the stage with his phone and showed you the crowd and everyone cheered for you putting a huge smile on your face, surely washing your worries away.

everytime you’d a nightmare, seungri would sing for you, sing you back to sleep. but tonight when he was awoken, he was worried. he hadn’t ever seen you this upset, you weren’t crying, more like your tears had dried. you were staring at the ceiling pointlessly. he turned to you concerned, “are you feeling sick? do you want me to call the doctor?”

you looked at him after a while, “why are you still me?”

“i’m not sure i understand the question.”

He’d roll over, his arm outstretching naturally to hook around you, but the fact that there was a body next to him confused him at first, but when his head popped up to look he’d just settle back down. He’d pull you closer before realizing it was just a hook up, but a warm body was a warm body and he’d hope that you understood later, from what he remembered you were cool. When you woke up and tried to leave he’d surprise even himself by asking you to stay, but you were fun company and even if the relationship never went anywhere you’d still be someone he thought of when he wanted to have a fun night, and not just in the sex way. 

Seunghyun:

His first thought would be ‘why is she still here.’ but as he got up and got dressed he’d start to not care, going about his morning until you woke up. When you did and quietly apologized for staying he’d shake his head and tell you it was fine and offer you a cup of coffee and possibly a cigarette. He’d sit and talk with you because he wanted to, not because he felt bad. He’d walk you out, give you an awkward hug and let you leave. But for the next day he’d just think about you and wonder what type of person you were, and if you were someone he could eventually see himself with. 

Daesung:

He wouldn’t know what to do. Does he wake you up? Does he let you sleep? What happens when you woke up? He decided the best option would be to just pretend to sleep until you woke up to leave, but when you started to move he sat up before he could stop himself. He’d give you an awkward good morning and suddenly become very self conscious. He’d ask you if you were okay, and when you smiled and nodded while dressing yourself he’d also awkwardly ask if you need anything. When you left he’d get more comfortable, and send you a text, telling you he had a good time and hoped you did too. He’d probably remain in contact and become good friends with you too. 

Seungri:

He’d wake you up by kissing you and pulling the cover up over you more incase you were cold. When you woke up and giggled, covering your face at your obvious nakedness. heedful you in tighter to cuddle, which would turn into another round. He’d come around to keeping you with him all day, mainly cause the sex was great and you were obviously enjoying yourself so much. He’d find you exciting and spontaneous and find himself calling you more and more after you left that evening, if not to do the deed than to just talk.

The Villain of Romance - Episode 6

I’m so excited for a new episode of this very light and funny show. I have other stuff to finish before going in, but I don’t care. I had a terrible day today, so I deserve a little feel good. And this is just the perfect next 45 minutes for me.

So this time around, we’re tackling the hard subject of how to confess. Hee Jae tells Hyeon his version of how he asked Yoojin out, which is pretty epic. And then she tells her version, saying that it was the most embarrassing day of her life and people made fun of him. Because it was indeed kind of cringe. Anyways, Yoo Jin agrees to help Hyeon confess to Go Yoon, that way he’ll leave Hee Jae alone. What a little devil.

When he does his ppt on his plan to ask Yoon out, Yoo Jin tells him he didn’t put enough of Go Yoon inside of his plan, so he should go now to learn more about her. Doing so, he gets caught by a neighbourhood friend staring at her and mistakes him as a stalked. She almost slip up about their relationship. Then the guy actually helps a little Hyeon, even though he suggests that he doesn’t confess. He ends up making a very nice confession plan, however, he didn’t think about the means to go the beach, so they decide to go down the regular path: flowers and music at the restaurant. But Go Yoon never shows up, she went to another city.

Hence, the three of them make the drive there so Hyeon can meet her. He decides to confess under the ferris wheel, but he ends up hearing her tell a friend on the phone that he’s just a book delivery guy. So he leaves Hee Jae and Yoo Jin behind, going back home heart broken.

But not for long, as Hee Jae cheers him up and Hyeon ends up confessing to Go Yoon on the mike in the library or I don’t know where. But seems like the other neighbourhood friend is actually a really stalker, his room is filled with Go Yoon’s pictures.

And they also introduce a senior student to Hee Jae. I smell trouble coming.

I can’t believe they left us on a cliffhanger. That’s the first time happening so far. I’m not sure I like it. I actually liked that even though the episodes are related, they were complete as stand alone too. So even though maybe a lot of time passes between two watching sessions, it’s alright if you forgot what happened in the previous episode, because it wouldn’t matter so much.

He didn’t want to pry at why you where crying, he wanted you to tell him on your own time. So when you calmed down a bit you told him and showed him the comments on your recent Instagram post. He would be fuming on the inside but would toss your phone aside and pull you up in front of the bathroom mirror and tell you how beautiful you are to him and would hold you in his arms.

“Those people are just jealous because you have my heart, You are the most beautiful and sexiest woman/man I have ever laid my eyes on! So, don’t ever listen to those assholes and only listen to me.”

Daesung: He would be the studio when he saw your post on Instagram and smile at how cute you looked in one of his sweatshirts, but once he scrolled down to leave a comment he saw people saying harsh things about your weight and would write a damn book in the comments about how cute, beautiful, and amazing you looked. Then would call you to see if you wanted to get take out and watch movies tonight.

“I cant wait to come home to OUR house and kiss YOU all over your CUTE face!!”

Taeyang: He would get pissed off when he was scrolling through your Instagram and seeing all of the hate comments about you and your weight. He would go on a full on rampage on his Instagram, twitter, and Facebook about body shaming and how he loves you and is very upset his “fans” would do something like this to someone he loved dearly.

“How dare you call yourselves my fans, I don’t ever want to see your faces at my concerts! (Y/N) doesn’t deserve this at all! What has she/he ever done to you? She/He is the most amazing, and beautiful person I have ever laid my eyes on! She/He takes care of me when I’m tired, sick, unhappy, or just not feeling like myself. She/He is the reason for me being healthy and happy! I hope everyone who sees this that has ever body shamed my (Y/N) feels ashamed for saying all of those hurtful words.”

Seungri: He would hear your soft whimpering coming from the bathroom when he got home from practice. He would call your name worried but when your whimpers stopped and saw you walk out and fake a smile he knew something was up. He would take your hand and lead you to the living room couch an dsit you next to him. He would ask whats wrong and when you lie and say nothing he will look in your eyes knowing. When you told him why you were crying he would hold you in his arms and let you cry it out if you needed to whispering how much he loves and adores you. He tells you not to listen to them because they are all wrong.

“Let it out baby. Don’t listen to them, they clearly don’t know what they’re talking about because you’re absolutely perfect to me and that’s all that matters.”

G-Dragon: He wouldn’t really know how to react seeing you crying on the couch when he walked through the front door. He would slowly make his way over to you. He would touch your shoulder causing you to jump and scream from not knowing he came in. He would rush around the couch to help you up off the floor. You sort of forgot about why you where crying because he scared you, but you quickly remembered when you looked at his face and you would started to tear up again. He would ask why  and you would just point to your computer showing your twitter mentions. He scrolled through them and slammed it shut, grabbed your hand and dragged you to his car. He ignored your questions and drove until you guys reached a pier that over looked a beautiful beach and it was starting to get dark so it was amazing.

“I don’t want you reading any of that stuff anymore. If you happen to see it i want you to keep scrolling. Not one of those comments are true. You’re absolutely perfect, I couldn’t imagine being with someone else. That’s why…”

He would then get down on one knee and pull out a black velvet box.

“I want to know if you’ll make me even happier by becoming my wife/husband?”

I don't understand why people would want to even be around him. His bad press can easily rub off on you. He isn't really a celebrity anymore. He isn't in BigBang. He has basically been banned from the entire South Korean Entertainment Industry. The people around him are those people who are desperate for fame and attention. Even if he is a criminal, they still wanna be able to say they met and hung out with an ex member of Big Bang.

BIGBANG Reactions to You Being Jealous

☆Seungri☆:

You knew that Seungri had always been friendly with other idols. You knew that the idols that he was friends with included female idols. However, this did little to soothe the green monster inside of you as you saw him with Yuri, the lead dancer of SNSD. You had just been shopping when you stumbled across the two of them together. He had been eating a burger with her on a park bench, and despite you trying to tell yourself that it meant nothing, that they were just friends hanging out, you couldn’t seem to shake loose the budding jealousy taking hold of you. You didn’t want to be the clingy girlfriend who banned her boyfriend from meeting up with his friends, but you also didn’t want him hanging around girls as beautiful as her. Not wanting make a scene however, you decided not to confront the two.

You had arrived back to your house when a new text sounded on your phone. It was from Seungri.

Hey! What are you doing right now?

You scoffed. I wonder why he’s talking to me and not his other girlfriend, you sneered. He has no right to talk to me after not even telling me that he was going to go out with his friend. Fine, if he won’t tell me that he’s going to grab lunch with his idol friend then I sure as hell won’t be telling him anything. 

You put down your phone just as another text alert sounded. Not being able to help yourself, you flipped it over to see what Seungri had sent you.

Are you home? Can I stop by?

Who does he think I am? Am I just a booty call for him? Ugh, seriously. This time, you turned your sound notifications off before putting down your phone, ignoring him for the rest of the night.

The next day, you awoke to the sound of heavy knocking on your front door. What the fuck? It’s only 7 in the morning! I don’t have to be up for a few more hours. This person better have a legitimate reason for waking me up so fucking early. 

You opened your door, too pissed off and tired to bother checking to see who it was. Before you could make sense of what was happening, you felt yourself being crushed into a tight hug.

“What the fuck?” you half-whispered, half-said to yourself, trying to figure out who in their right mind would try to hug you right in the morning.

“Seungri, what the hell are you doing? It’s 7 in the morning! Get off of me!” You pushed Seungri, however, he didn’t budge.

“You didn’t answer my texts or calls last night… I-I thought something might’ve happened to you since you always text me before going to bed. I was so worried.” Seungri turned his head slightly from its position on your shoulder and took a deep breath in, relaxing his body as he calmed down knowing you were safe in his arms.

“Why would I answer you? Don’t you have another girl who you can talk to when I’m not there?” you sneered, pulling back from his embrace. Seungri looked at you confusedly.

“What are you talking about, Jagiya?” he asked, scrambling to find the answer to his own question rapidly inside his own head. “What other girl?”

By this point, you had created distance between yourself and Seungri. You crossed your arms, infuriated that he didn’t know what he had done wrong.

“Oh, so is that what you do with your side chicks? Go out with them for some burgers and then forget it even happened? Who do you think you are?”

Seungri scrunched his eyebrows, trying desperately to figure out what you were talking about. Seeing your angry expression, however, understanding slowly began to dawn on him.

“You’re not… talking about me hanging out with Yuri the other day, are you?” he asked cautiously, trying to gauge your reaction to see if he had gotten it right.

“What else would I be talking about? Why? Are there other girls you’ve been seeing, too?” you huffed out, getting more and more infuriated by the second. You couldn’t believe the nerve of him, asking if it had been that event that triggered this response.

“Y/N… Sit down. Let me explain to you what happened,” Seungri tried to reason with you, however, you stood your ground.  

“No, I will not fucking sit down and have you talk down to me. Explain what you need to in five seconds or I WILL kick you out.”

“Okay, listen. I was just shopping when I accidentally bumped into Yuri. We chitchatted for a bit when she asked if I had had lunch and I hadn’t so she invited me to go grab some lunch with her. It honestly meant nothing to me. You’re my everything, not her, and I never knew you were there or else I totally would have ditched her for you. I didn’t bother texting you about it either since it happened accidentally.”

“How am I supposed to believe that Seungri? How?!? She’s gorgeous and you’re telling me that you’re nothing more than just friends?!?” You had tears in your eyes at this point, threatening to spill over the brim of your eyelids and coat your cheeks with the pain imagining Seungri with someone else caused you.

“Y/N, she may be pretty, but she’ll never even hold a candle to your beauty. I can understand why you’d be upset but I’m being honest. You know me. You know that I don’t like to lie, especially not to you.”

You heaved a breath of relief, quickly wiping away your unshed tears. “I’m sorry, Seungri. I don’t know what came over me. I was just so jealous seeing you with her that I-I-I just couldn’t think straight. I’m sorry for doubting you.”

“Don’t worry babe, it’s okay. After all, when your boyfriend is as good looking as me, it’s easy to feel jealous of anyone who gets anywhere close to me. Oh, and next time, don’t give me the silent treatment unless you want your hunk of a boyfriend to die from the worry.”

“I hate you.”
