The Villain of Romance - Episode 1
Tumblr media
Since I spend a lot of time on Viki for subbing purposes once again, it obviously becomes a source of inspiration when it comes to finding new dramas to watch and this was on the home page when I logged in this morning. And who do I see on the promotional picture? No one else than Baro from B1A4. Well I know he’s not part of the band anymore and that’s how I first knew him and he was one of my favorite with his very low voice. The picture looks cute, so I decided that this will be the next drama I’m watching, probably in parallel with something else because the episodes are not all out as I’m writing this review. Hopefully it will be a change from all the past series I have been watching lately.
For a second there, I thought I jumped in too fast and that it was actually a Reality Show, with the two anchors. They were reading a letter from a viewer I guess and that leads us to the story so far. Hee Jae gets into a fight with his girlfriend, Yoo Jin, decides to go on a trip alone with another man, her childhood friend.
Yoo Jin seems to be a very bossy woman. So far, I think she’s a little abusive with Hee Jae. Why would she take him to him super spicy food when she knows he can’t handle it very well? I personally looooove spicy food, however, my partner can’t handle it very well, so I don’t put as much peppers when I cook to suit their preference. And that’s not being submissive, it’s just being considerate, the same way they stopped using white pepper everywhere since I don’t like it even though that is his preference. Anyways. It doesn’t look like a healthy relationship to me.
Hee Jae didn’t know for a long time that Yoo Jin’s childhood friend she spends so much time with is actually a man and is very shocked on the day he meets him. Ever after that, he keeps following them around and getting between them every time they meet. One, that’s very childish. Two, that’s way too controlling. If you can’t trust someone, don’t date them. However, I can’t completely blame him, because she does stuff that annoys him on purpose and that’s really not nice.
Hee Jae ends up begging his friend to drive him to the hotel where Yoo Jin and Sang Ah are staying. He comes right as she’s leaving. In the room, Sang Ah tried to kiss her after she told him he was sad long enough about his breakup with his girlfriend and she rejected him quite violently. Hee Jae’s friend’s car died on the way there, after Hee Jae abandoned him.
And that’s it for now. So far I wouldn’t say the plot is incredible, nor is the acting. I mean, it’s okay. I’m only just one episode in, so I think it might actually be in the spirit of parody? In that case, I’m all in.

Every single day I'm grateful for that time I stumbled on the SVSSS headcanon that while Bingqiu is considered highkey confusing and lowkey cringe in the demon realm, Moshang is known as the Power Couple™. They're the demonic love story. The 'It Couple'.
Just generations of demons sighing over the dramatic and bloody love story of the Northern King and his right hand man plus spymaster, yearning for one of their own filled with such glorious violence and betrayal! A classic childhood friends to lovers narrative filled with ups and downs and copious murder and gore! Love at first sight! The story of the loyal spy who rose up the ranks of the brutal Northern Court, culling his competition while providing vital intel to his liege, all the while infiltrating the most powerful cultivation sect in the world and eventually even becoming a Peak Lord! The slow burn of all slow burns! All kinds of spicy complicated power imbalances! Sexy, unexpected age gaps! Years of heavy plot! Decades of passionate courting! The pinnacle of inter-species forbidden romance! The tale of a man who swore eternal loyalty after falling violently in love at the very first meeting, calling a mere Prince His King in his desire and determination to see his beloved's ascension to the throne that was his birthright, and the Demon Prince who was unexpectedly presented with fierce loyalty in a life that had until then been rife with treachery and grabbed it with both hands and never looked back!
...and there's Junshan and the weird human he keeps around. Somewhat interesting if you're into that teacher-student thing I guess. There were very few deaths. Some bland murders. The trial arc and the self destruct thing plus corpse hoarding was interesting but overall very vanilla. Unseasoned. Not even a proper decade of drama. Kinda boring. And Junshan's half human so they're like Walmart version inter-species romance. But whatever the Emperor's into I guess. His dad was kinda weird too but at least his relationship with that human woman had some kick to it. The new generation just doesn't appreciate a long drawn out painful romance tsk tsk...
Like infinitely grateful to whoever first spawned that headcanon. Never fails to make me laugh. Honestly the most hilarious thing I've ever seen in this fandom. Hope your pillow is always cold and you never stub your toe.

Would you be willing to do more enemies to lover tropes in hero x villain?
"You have a date?"
"If you don't want me to date other people, screw me yourself."
There was a beat of absolute silence. The hero abruptly realized what they'd said. They whirled to face the villain, eyes wide. "I didn't mean - that is - I don't know why I just said that."
Everyone around the room was gaping at the two of them.
The villain's head tilted, oh so slowly, to the side. Their gaze burned into the hero.
"I was being flippant," the hero said.
"Mm."
"You know, because you're possessive."
"Am I?" The villain's voice was silken.
"So I was just getting in there before you said something snippy."
"Oh? Is that what you were doing?"
The hero glared at them, face hot, stomach fluttering.
"Leave us," the villain said.
Everyone around them scattered.
The hero cleared their throat, not speaking until the last door had fallen closed. They wrenched their gaze away to anything, anywhere, except them. "It's not a serious date. I mean - they're not you."
The thing, whatever they were calling it, that they had with the villain was infinitely complex. Consuming. They were the most important person to the villain, and vice versa, and they both knew it but...
But they'd never kissed. They'd certainly never slept together.
Sure, the hero would probably get antsy if they thought the villain was going out with someone who might become first priority. But it wasn't - they weren't - the hero hadn't even been the one to bring up the bloody date!
The villain rose to their feet.
"You're walking dangerously close to one of our lines, hero mine," they warned softly. They sauntered closer, seemingly lazy, except that was the one thing that they never were. "You look startled enough that I can believe it was an accident. We could forget about it."
The hero watched them, a little mesmerized, heart pounding. The villain stopped in front of them.
The hero opened their mouth.
The villain tapped their lip. "Ah, ah. You're not getting away with another flippant comment after that. Think."
The hero closed their mouth. They swallowed.
It was a truth universally acknowledged that when the air between them began to crackle, the hero would say something snarky or careless to diffuse the tension. Nine times out of ten, the villain went along with it. Eight times out of ten, the hero didn't say something quite so dumb in a room full of witnesses.
It wasn't fear. It was terrifying, but it wasn't fear. It would have been so much easier if they were simply scared.
The villain set their hands on either side of the armchair the hero sat in. The hero let themselves be bracketed in with the same slow deliberation as the villain had approached them.
The hero exhaled a breath.
"Good," the villain murmured, studying them. "Now. Would you like to take that back?"
The hero said a lot of crap to the villain that they never took back. They were the only one who did. They watched the villain for a beat, every atom wondering what it would be like if the villain's hands slipped from their careful placement on furniture onto flesh.
The dates weren't like that. The dates were never like this.
But, lord, it would be such a stupid thing to do to cross that line.
The hero tipped their chin up, holding the villain's gaze again. "Do you want me to take it back?"
"If you don't, I'm definitely taking what you said as a challenge."
"Ah, yeah. That's fair." The hero wet their dry lips. "Fair warning."
"So?"
It had happened before. A threshold moment. A teetering. The villain's eyes would go dark, like they currently were, tracking everything. They'd let it go, though. If the hero asked. They always did. For all of their obvious possessiveness, the villain was never the one who brought it up.
"So," the hero dared, before they could stop themselves.
The villain's eyes notched another inch darker, more molten. Their nails dug into the upholstery.
The hero shivered; delicious and awful all at once. Intoxicating.
"So you were being flippant?" the villain prompted.
"So flippant. Unforgivably reckless. I mean, we're a terrible idea."
"The worst," the villain agreed. "Your dates are much sweeter."
"You can be sweet. When you want to be."
The villain clicked their tongue, warning.
The hero grinned back at them. Wild. Drunk, perhaps, on the vertigo of such reckless possibility, such foolish wanting.
They were at the line again. The hero was boldly brushing it with their toe, smudging at it, taunting.
The villain waited.
"You're sweet to me," the hero said. "Despite yourself." They leaned in, and up. "Tell me to stop."
"Do you want to stop?"
"No."
"No," the villain echoed. Then they grabbed the hero by the hair and kissed them.

the modern villainisation of demeter will never cease to enrage me bc it wasn’t ENOUGH to just take a story of a girl being torn from her home from everyone who loved her and dragged away to be forced into marriage and twist and corrupt it until it was a romance story about female empowerment that wasn’t ENOUGH they HAD to take the original hero of the story the mother who went to every length to find her daughter again to bring her home and demonise her character until she was this horrific overbearing unloving mother. overprotective controlling without love. they turn the story of her grief at her YOUNG daughter being torn from her without her knowledge into the story of a misunderstood bad boy and a horrible cruel mother who won’t give him a chance and i really find it sickening. it’s ironic, that the ever misogynist age of hellenistic greece, has a better grasp of how disgusting and horrifying this situation was that a modern, self proclaimed ‘feminist’ era.

Will the villain of book 4 be female/male or can we choose the genre considering there is a romance option? *_* Also, if we are in a romance with the vampires, does the villain still want the MC?
The plan is definitely for now to make it a choice, yeah. Especially as they will be a romance option! I've already planned in the choice and though it might be a bit jarring narratively, I need to remember it's also a game as well as a story and some choices just need to be obvious, lol! :D
And yes. The villain will be trying to...bring the MC to their side no matter whether in a romance or not as, once again, the MC has something the villain wants...related to their blood in an unexpected way this time!
It's just the romance angle will only play out if you choose it and only on the 'friend' route where you're not already romancing one of the vampires. And you will have multiple options to stay in the romance or not as it is a villain romance and this villain is really...very villainous, lol! Definitely may not suit everyone!
Thank you so much for the ask! :)

Loving Names
Hero was perplexed when Villain stopped calling them by their terms of endearment. Things like “honey,” “love,” or “sweetheart,” had made them melt, but they’d never dare show interest to an enemy like that. They were just curious as to why, that’s all.
It was just a bit strange now that they realized after their last few battles with Villain, all the nicknames had disappeared entirely.
In the time they met Villain they always knew there was just something about them that drew them closer. It wasn’t just the way Villain affectionately talked them up or the small remarks that gave them butterflies but also the hints of deeper feelings they left for them with every banter.
It all tore at their heart, of course they can’t openly say something so embarrassing. A hero’s job was to protect the city and its citizens from villains and this one was no exception.
So Hero never reciprocated the behaviour. They couldn’t let themselves become caught up in the emotional drama Villain was leading them in.
At least they should’ve saw it coming. They should’ve known that after denying Villain from the satisfaction of ever knowing how they felt, that Villain would eventually stop pursuing. They would stop the flirting and the lingering gazes. The gentle but brief touches and the high risk close combat that gave Villain a chance to speak soft poems to them.
It was like a reset button had been pressed and Villain immediately returned to how things initially were when they first met.
For that, Hero felt great regret.
Which is why they were planning on confronting them.
***
They found Villain sitting casually at the scene of another crime. It almost seemed unusually quicker than normal. It would take at least an hour to detect Villain at any of these attacks, but it looked like the universe had something else in mind.
Determination pushed Hero toward their nemesis, the question still boiling deep inside them.
Hero walked behind them as the other idly sat on the roof, their feet dangling at its edge. “Villain,” they spoke.
They rose from their position, and turned to look at them with sly eyes. “Just in time. Shall we continue where we left off?”
Without much hesitation, Hero pulled out their weapon and readied themselves for the dance they’ve grown so familiar with.
Villain closed the gap and swung in their direction; their hand aiming for their gut. They quickly blocked the attack and backed up, a swift kick sent them back and let Hero breathe momentarily.
As the battle continued against Villain, their heart began to race out of anticipation for the promised conversation. It would be awkward at first, but as soon as they could get it out they would play it all off cool.
“What’s got your mind wandering?” Villain shoved Hero to ground as quickly as they tugged the weapon out of their grasp.
At first, they didn’t acknowledge the concern, but figured if anything, now would be the time to ask. Their eyes warily stared at Villain’s mischievous mask, though words began to fail them, “Uh…” it had to be now. They couldn’t let this stress take hold of them any longer.
The criminal stood just a few feet from them with a curious glint. They were certain they knew exactly what Hero was going to ask.
“I noticed…” Their voice was a lot shakier as they stood, “That you stopped with all the… names.” Their gaze stayed glued to the ground as their face grew hotter.
Villain hummed with an expression that lightened up instantly. “Oh, what do you mean?”
So they were going to play stupid. Was this some kind of punishment for not giving the reciprocation they were looking for?
They should’ve known and yet…
“You know…” They wiped their sweating hands onto their suit. “You always had a way with words.”
“I don’t seem to know what you’re talking about, Hero.”
They pouted slightly at the responses, “How do you not know? You’ve always called me… other things…” They trailed off. Just how long was Villain intending to keep them in this agonizing situation?
A laughter echoed which sent their head spiralling. Villain moved closer, their steps were quiet enough to match any predator. “I’m starting to think there’s something you want from me. I wonder what it is?~”
Hero tightened their lips. Maybe they should’ve kept their mouth shut after all. “I’m only asking a question.”
Villain circled them, still putting on their clueless face, “I can’t answer a question if you won’t make it clearer for me.” They shrugged. The enemy was no where in sight, though they could sense Villain stalking behind them.
A ghostly touch climbed up their spine. With their shoulders tense, Hero spun around to face Villain who was only inches from them. “W-what!?” They stammered.
“You always keep me waiting, Hero. Always guessing your motives.” From their expression Hero caught something change, “A never ending cycle of not knowing…”
They sighed, their heart still hammering in their chest, “Did I do something to upset you? To make you stop… with the terms of endearment?”
Lips curled slowly upwards at their questions. “Oh. So you did like them after all.” They chuckled warmly. “Did you enjoy having cute pet names?”
Hero took several steps back, “What? No!”
“Alright. Then I guess there shouldn’t be a problem then if I stop—”
“No, don’t!” It came out unexpectedly from them. It was enough to make Villain’s eyes go wide, and the air to grow thicker.
Their thoughts tugged at them again, they didn’t want Villain to just stop but they also hated to admit they loved it.
“So you don’t want me to stop? Why?” They chuckled.
Damn it. Villain knew exactly what they were doing.
Their mind fumbled to grab the words they needed to play it all naturally.
“Why? Because uhm…”
“C’mon. I know you can say it for me~”
They nervously tapped their foot to the ground, “Fine…” They said through clenched teeth, “I liked it.”
“You mean you loved it, right?”
They nodded.
Their nemesis’ laughter didn’t stop though, it only increased from there. Villain always went overboard with their teasing. “You loved what?” They leaned in closer.
Their hands tightened into a fist this time, eyes shut as their head hung low. It felt so shameful and exhausting to keep this up. “I loved it when… you call me… your love.”
“Aww… so you aren’t as heartless as it seems” Villain lifted Hero’s chin and brushed the hair from their face, “That’s all I needed to hear from you, my little dove.”
Oh, and there it was again. That satisfying tingle against their skin. That rush of dopamine and excitement.
Villain sensed their change in mood and smiled confidently, “You really take advantage of these pet names, don’t you?”
“Only from you.” Their head tilted into Villain’s palm.

The Villain of Romance - Overall Review
Tumblr media
So I just completed this series last night and it’s more than about time I gave my full out review on it. I think a lot of people disliked this drama for many reasons, but as for me... Well, keep going to know more!
Plot
The story is focusing on two college students that are experiencing dating problems in their relationship together. It’s mostly going for clichés, but gradually they work through each of their differences and issus to make their relationship lasting.
Albeit very simple, the plot was okay, it showed different sides of what it is to be in a relationship and making it work. It was mostly satirical in my opinion and not meant to be taken seriously, as most of the traits shown were actually over exaggerated for comedy purpose. That kind of humour might work for some and might not for others. I found it entertaining. And through all that, they still carried a message and to me that was good.
Overall, it’s nothing super extraordinary, but it deserves a round 7/10.
Acting
Here, it’s kind of interesting, because I would say that the acting is actually rather poor. But it’s also kind of staged. It’s like, we did it on purpose. So if you’re looking for dashing acting skills, I would suggest to skip on that one. Nobody is taking themselves seriously, and that’s something I personally liked about this show.
However, purely based on the scale I’m usually using for rating acting, as non speaker of the language, this gets a little 5/10.
Aesthetics
The visuals and sounds of this drama was nice, it matched pretty well with the story and what was going on. Everything was lighthearted, which was nice. There’s nothing much more to say about it. They did well, but it wasn’t stunning either. It’s a 7/10.
Do I recommend this drama?
I would say I do recommend this drama to anyone who would like to watch something very lighthearted. There are some extracts that are a little darker and more seriously, but it’s mostly a satire. I’ve seen a lot of backlash on the comments saying that the relationship is toxic and everything. But that’s kind of the point? The two protagonists are working through the toxicity of their relationship to make it work and grow. I think that’s the interesting part, because it’s talking about very toxic traits that are often shown in dramas, but that it’s never actually addressed as a problem the main couple has to solve. I mean, I haven’t watched that many recent k-dramas lately, so maybe the curve changed on that matter, but still. For the longest times, these things were okay, even dreamy, and now that it’s put into a comical way, it isn’t? I don’t know. For me they just making a lot of fun of those situations while showing ways to grow out of it. It actually gives decent advice on dating, in my opinion, not that I’m a dating expert. Plus, the show’s name is the Villain of Romance, obviously there would be bound to have some bad things happen. Anyways. It’s funny, it’s light, it’s a short ride. I would say go for it if you don’t take everything seriously when there’s no need to. It overall gets a 7/10 for me. It’s not going to be drama of the year, but still. It’s a fun watch, so enjoy it!

i'm aware that due to luffy's more cheerful personality and looks, a lot of people might find it weird to picture him in sexual situations. especially since most of us see him as aroace (as if aroace people couldn't have sex or be in love but, y'know, that's for another time) and it's completely understandable to not feel comfortable around sexual stuff if you don't like it with this specific character. however, being uncomfortable around that type of content and infantilizing luffy's character to the point that you consider it problematic or wrong to put him in romantic/sexual situations is too much and you should let people enjoy characters however the fuck they want. if you don't like something just scroll and ignore it, but don't try to make everyone follow your own moral compass and likes because we're all different and luffy is just a fictional character.
people often forget he's the captain of a pirate crew. he's mature and has critical thinking and if seeing a cheerful/cute character instantly makes you assume he deserves to be "protected" from sex/romance, you are: infantilizing his personality (that may or may not be neurodivergent coded, but that's another story), villainizing sex and romance instead of just seeing those as something you don't personally enjoy but should let other people consume, and using being aroace as a shield from the real world and a stereotype instead of actually being inclusive and truly seeing him as aroaspec. friendly reminder that aroaspec people can have sex and be in romantic relationships because it's a spectrum. that's the whole thing about it. it's understandable to not be comfortable around sexual situations with a character you don't perceive as sexually active, but that doesn't mean it's wrong to write him that way. let people do whatever they want with their idea of luffy and have fun!
