Bruce hides the thin lines on his neck behind the high collar of his turtleneck, closing his eyes. The crossword puzzle on the last page of the newspaper whitens untouched and Robertson feels nauseous again. For the fifth time in the last three hours, damn it, do the new pills really cause this kind of reaction? He sighs, opening his eyes and running his gaze over the printed photos of the murder scene again, thinking only of the piercing eyes of the dead woman's brother during the interview.
Michael Fassbender and director Steve McQueen paint a dark picture of New York in this rendition of a man with a good job but uses his charm to seduce many different women while masking his deep insecurities. Eventually his sister (Carey Mulligan) makes a planned visit last a long time. That's when the backstory kicks in and gives necessary context to this perplexing after-hours drama. Not for a faint of heart; great acting performances add flair to this clever film.
It’s too bad I can’t watch House of Stars ( because it’s soup ) because the director and the cinematographer clearly adore cinema. Because Kama Sutra : a tale of love + Shame (The sheets !) + and a kill bill / lady snoowblood fantasy in a single shot ? MAKE A REAL HORROR BL TEAM !
Jack Drake is Tim's Dad. Not Bruce. It doesn't matter what you think of him or Bruce. Canonically Tim's entire career up until Identity Crisis was about wanting to tell Jack who he was, and to gain his understanding and approval and pride. His murder, just when Tim finally got all of them, fucking broke him.
Bruce is a father figure to Tim, and Bruce loves him like a son. But they have a far more complicated relationship than just father and son. When Tim thinks of "Dad", he thinks of Jack Drake, the same way Dick thinks only of John Grayson as his Dad. Even Cassandra, horrifically abused by David Cain, will never not think of Cain as her father, because that is what being a child means. You are not wired to reassign the emotionality of that role, no matter how much they hurt you. Ironically, Jason is the one who can't help but see Bruce as his Dad, no matter how much he doesn't want to, which is what breaks him so much.
There's a reason they all except Damian call Bruce "Bruce". A mentor, partner, guardian and refuge more than a father, but still a father in all the ways that matter. But more importantly, the shadow that eclipses everything else in their field of vision, with his own well of gravity trapping them in orbit.
Families of choice, adopted parent-child relationships and human relationships as a whole are incredibly complicated. When you try to force it all into a nuclear family model with traditionally assigned roles, you're flattening the characters and refusing the rich tapestry of the human experience.
sorry but if you actually think Cancel Culture ™ is a thing then you're kinda a dumb fuck. Cancel culture isn't real, holding people accountable for their actions is a thing, but this whole narrative around Canceling that's evolved over the past few years isn't real. It's never been an actual thing. Its just a fear mongering tactic to further vilify the groups who were being harmed in the first place and victimize the person who did something wrong.
Your fav being called out for playing an antisemitic video game that directly gives profits to a hugely influential TERF, who's said openly she sees getting profits / royalty cheques from her franchise as endorsements for her bigotry, is not "cancel culture". It's called the consequences for your actions.
You have every right to do and play whatever the fuck you want, but that goes both ways. If you go out of your way to build up and financially support these people who're openly advocating to take away trans people's rights, then you get to deal with people not trusting you because of it. You get to deal with trans and Jewish folks not feeling safe around you, not wanting to be around you or not wanting to talk to you. Because you have shown that you care more about nostalgia and temporary personal emotional gratification over the wellbeing and safety of those communities in the real world.
People have explained why supporting HL is wrong, people have explained why it's harmful, people have explained in detail the issues with this situation. You. Just. Don't. Care. You don't listen, or read, because in the end, you can't be bothered enough to put in the effort of having 1 moment of critical thinking.
It's not that folks don't have arguments or evidence, it's that it clearly does not matter to you. It's that the value of an antisemitic game full of one horrific thing after another is worth more to you than the real, living breathing people who are going to be, and have been, affected by this.
You come across as a bad person. Not because some person on Twitter determined you must be, but because your actions speak far louder. And they're screaming red flags.
I'm not going to argue with you over your own bad decisions and life choices. You've made your bed and are mad that people are telling you to lie in it.
Unpopular Opinions: A few characters I think are queer (maybe not canonical, but very, very codded) Batch 1.
Remember kids: I am only talking about fictional characters and no real people and what I mean is that the cannon leaves things open to these interpretations.
Brandon Sullivan (Shame, 2011) bisexual. Fic in the works exploring that. Also an essay with a supporting article.
Silas Selleck (Slow West 2015). Gay. (Yes, Gay. As in exclusively attracted to men. There is a reason I am writing him as Silva's paramour in my AU fic The Forest From the Trees. I will have an essay about Silas' sexuality in a future post).
Payne (Slow West 2015). Gay. He and Silas were lovers while Silas was in Payne's gang and you can't convince me otherwise.
Don't believe me? Look below:
Bikram and Bala (Gunday, 2014) Probably bisexual, but I go back and forth. Gunday is extremely queer codded.
Simba. (Yes, I went there!) Let's just say queer. That dude dances like a gogo dancer for crying out loud.
