Bloomberg: The Second Trump Presidency, Brought to You by Right-Leaning Male YouTubers
Davey Alba, Leon Yin, Julia Love, Ashley Carman, Priyanjana Bengani, Rachael Dottle, and Elena Mejía at Bloomberg:
As Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th US President on Monday, he was surrounded by his family, donors and wealthy tech executives. Just a few feet farther away stood a political newcomer who’s been credited with encouraging lots of votes: Joe Rogan. The fact that Rogan, the host of the world’s most popular podcast, watched from the Capitol Rotunda as Republican luminaries like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis were confined to overflow speaks volumes about the new dynamics at play in Washington and the media writ large. Over the past two years, a set of massively popular podcasters and streamers cemented themselves as the new mainstream source of information for millions of young men, and, according to a new Bloomberg analysis, used their perch to rally these constituents in support of Trump and the political right.
In an effort to understand the media diet of a generation, Bloomberg watched and analyzed over 2,000 videos from nine prominent YouTubers. Reporters reviewed nearly 1,300 hours of footage from their channels, mapped out the podcasters’ guest networks and quantified the frequency of key political messages that they distributed to tens of millions of subscribers each day. To hear them tell it, America is in a desperate place, destabilized by soaring inflation, migrants streaming across the border and the beginnings of a third world war. Gender politics have gotten out of hand while schools and the medical establishment duped the public. The same messages were communicated in Trump’s inaugural address on Monday. Now that Trump is back in power, the broadcasters are well-positioned to help build support for his political agenda, transforming grievances into policy that could have lasting effects even beyond Trump’s term in office.
In the months leading up to election, hosts had more politicians and pundits on their shows and discussed the issues more frequently. Of the broadcasters’ videos that reached over 1 million views on YouTube during the time span Bloomberg reviewed, more than a third of videos mentioned voting or the US elections — often with the host explicitly calling on listeners to vote. None of the broadcasters style themselves as political pundits, and their conservative talking points were sandwiched between free-wheeling discussions of sports, masculinity, internet culture, gambling and pranks — making the rhetoric more palatable to an apolitical audience. Still, their popularity is sparking a “very big sea change in terms of who are the voices that matter,” Mark Zuckerberg, Meta Platforms Inc. chief executive officer, said in a conversation with Rogan published Jan. 10. “There’s this wholesale generational shift in who are the people who are being listened to.”
According to Edison Research, close to 50% of people over the age of 12 listen to a podcast monthly. Rogan’s three-hour interview with Trump in late October drew about 50 million views on YouTube. Zuckerberg, for his part, recently loosened Meta’s policies on Facebook and Instagram to allow more of the type of rhetoric that’s common among the podcasters, such as disparagement of transgender people. He added Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Dana White, who encouraged Trump to join as a guest on such podcasts, to Meta’s board. Elon Musk, the owner of X, has made product changes to allow longer video streaming, in support of podcasters — and joined several as a guest himself. Google, meanwhile, wants to work through some Republican perceptions of its liberal bias and show that YouTube has already long been popular with conservatives, according to a person familiar with the company’s thinking. Over the weekend before the inauguration, many of the podcasters were coveted guests at parties hosted by YouTube, Spotify and other organizations. YouTube declined to comment. Spotify said “podcasts offer candidates a direct and influential way to engage with their audiences,” noting that both Trump and Democratic rival Kamala Harris took advantage of the medium. With the podcasters’ audiences skewing about 80% male on average, according to people familiar with the shows’ listener demographics, the hosts connected directly to a voting bloc that helped propel Trump back to the White House. Of the 903 podcast guests tracked by Bloomberg in the past two years, only 106 people, or 12 percent, were women. Men, and particularly white men, have long made up Trump’s core support base. But in November’s election, young men swung especially hard to the right. More than half of men under 30 supported Trump, according to the AP VoteCast survey of more than 120,000 voters, though outgoing President Joe Biden won the group in 2020. Exit polls have shown that Trump received more support from young men than any Republican candidate in more than two decades.
“We definitely helped with the young male vote,” Kyle Forgeard, a member of the Nelk Boys, said in an interview. “On the podcast, we just speak our mind, try to be true to ourselves and say what we think.” Above all, the broadcasters described American men as victims of a Democratic campaign to strip them of their power — a comforting message to a disspirited audience. These days, young men are lonelier than ever, with those aged 18 to 23 the least optimistic about their futures, and having the lowest levels of social support, according to Equimundo’s 2023 State of American Men report. Trump and his allies showed up for young men in the places where they were already spending their time — and supplied them with answers.
[...] The male-oriented podcasts tracked by Bloomberg each have their own style of show. Theo Von often discusses substance abuse issues and childhood experiences with his interviewees, while Lex Fridman focuses on expert opinions and tech topics. Shawn Ryan chats with people associated with military and law enforcement, saying he exposes the inner workings of the US government. Logan Paul, the Nelk Boys and Adin Ross tend to focus on humor, sports, pranks and creator drama. Of the programs reviewed, The Joe Rogan Experience, Flagrant by Andrew Schulz and The PBD Podcast by Patrick Bet-David follow the most typical host-and-interview talk show format, discussing news and popular culture, all while challenging political correctness. The hosts largely do not push back against their guests’ ideas. Von, Rogan and Schulz are also comedians, and they often recast controversial content as edgy humor. Yet even as the podcasts have tried to brand themselves uniquely, similar themes and characters appear across the network. Bloomberg’s analysis of 2,002 episodes across the shows reveals how closely interconnected the podcasters’ relationships are, and how much the shows’ talking points overlap. Over the past two years, 152 guests made an appearance on at least two of the shows. Recurring characters are common, not just as guests, but as “friends of the shows,” including the UFC CEO White and comedian Shane Gillis. The effect gives viewers a sense of being inducted into a virtual, close-knit friend group from home.

The Night Agent showrunner talks about plans for season 3 and what Peter, Rose, and the landscape of the show might look like. I LOVED hearing that there is a specific focus on portraying mental health and that the creator reached out to Matthew Quirk when writing Rose to really understand her character 🥺

Anne running the East Hills Teen Center gives me anxiety. I feel like she needs a security guard or at least someone with muscle to hang around and help her run things. She seems to run things mostly on goodwill but what happens when someone doesn't respect her? As we see in a future episode...
Our regular gang is mostly lost. They're playing games at Cordy's, just waiting on a vision. I really like the character development that occurred during Angel's breakdown. We used to see Angel and Gunn as the muscle and they'd go fight the evil while Wesley researched. Now Wesley is getting his hands dirty and he comes out a much more confident leader, which will have consequences down the road. Also, bonding.
Angel uses his attractiveness to his advantage and sets up a meet-cute with Anne. He wants the dirt on why she's involved with Wolfram & Hart. She says they've been like saints helping out the shelter and now they're organizing a charity ball. Angel discovers it's a money-laundering scheme.
Enter Boone. Angel's apparent nemesis who wants to bring him down. They met in Juarez in the 20s and got into a fight over a girl. After fighting for three hours without a winner Boone let Angel go when the sun came up. Haven't we learned this lesson already? Come on, W&H. Angel's way more likely to bring someone on side than end up dead. When you gonna get that?
I did enjoy Angel surprising Lilah in her car. He's furious at them sitting in their ivory tower pulling the strings and he wants to shake up their control. After what he did to Holland and company it shakes her up pretty bad. Lindsey is sick of following company rules and wants Boone to kill Angel.
Lindsey comes in when Angel is talking to Anne and plays the concerned puppy perfectly. Anne's been around awhile, though. I'm not sure she fell for it. I think she's pretty fiercely protective of her "kids" and willing to look the other way at the bad vibes she's getting.
Angel's plan works decently well. Lilah and Lindsey are at each other's throats, each thinking the other screwed up and gave Angel proof of their scheme. They act frantic when they think he has dirt on them, humiliating them in front of their bosses. Angel allows Boone to steal the charity money and then fights him for it. He gives the money to Anne when he wins.
Wolfram & Hart are pissed. It's against company policy to kill Angel as all prophecies say he has a key role in the apocalypse. At this point, the firm is just hoping Lilah and Lindsey will provoke Angel to murder them and he'll finally be on their side. Great employee protection here.
Honestly, this period of the season lagged for me. It picks up again towards the end but I really don't enjoy the group separated. They play off each other so well.

How successful would Vic Mackey…

Propaganda for the mic skills:
1) Michael Chiklis is a good actor 2) he’s a heel in his own show 3) he’s got some good heel zingers like when he shot a guy and then reported the dead body 4) he’s destined to be a wrestler since his show is called THE SHIELD
/

Propaganda for the wrestling skills:
Trained fighter by being a police officer. Maybe he can’t do the flippy stuff but he’s got the physicality and aggression for the role. Maybe he can be a Gunther-type wrestler, just smacking people around really hard.

David Badash at NCRM:
He’s been called the “least qualified nominee in American history,” and has insisted to reporters that his confirmation battle will not be played out in the press, but Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, after multiple appearances before the cameras, appears to be gaining ground on what some assumed last week was a nomination that was dead in the water. Hegseth has put to use his decade of experience as a Fox News host and leveraged his ties with his former employer to turn the ship around.
In addition to charges of being “wholly unqualified,” Hegseth is attempting to overcome numerous damning allegations, including tattoos that reflect an affinity for Christian nationalism, alleged “aggressive drunkenness,” possible alcohol intoxication on the job, alleged sexual assault of a woman who attended a Republican conference with her husband and children and says she was trapped by Hegseth in his room, and alleged financial mismanagement of two charities that support veterans. He is also trying to change the accurate perception that he opposes women in combat roles. Women have been in combat roles in the U.S. Armed Forces since 2015. But Hegseth has long been opposed to women in combat. Last month, Hegseth took heat after declaring, “I’m straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles,” and that “men in those positions are more capable.”
[...] Telling Sean Hannity he had a “great” meeting with U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) on Monday, the fast-talking Hegseth launched into apparently pre-scripted remarks. “I mean, people don’t really know this. I’ve known Senator Ernst for over ten years. I knew her when she was a state senator, running to be the first female combat veteran, and we support her in that effort and have continued to, because, you get, you get into these meetings and and you get, you get to listen to senators as an amazing advise and consent process, and you hear how thoughtful and serious and substantive they are on these key issues that they pertain to our Defense Department, and Joni Ernst is front and center on that, so able to have phone calls and meetings time and time again to talk over the issues is really, really important.” “And the fact that she’s willing to support me through this process means a lot, and I also want an opportunity here to clarify comments that have been misconstrued that I somehow don’t support women in the military.” “Some of our greatest warriors, our best warriors out there are women, who who serve raised their right hand to defend this country, and love our nation, want to defend that flag, and they do it every single day around the globe. So I’m not presuming anything, but after President Trump asked me to be his secretary of defense, should I get the opportunity to do that, I look forward to being a secretary for all our warriors, men and women, for the amazing contributions they make in our military.”
What Hegseth did was change the framing of the controversy. Hegseth isn’t under fire for saying he doesn’t want women in the military, he is under fire for saying he does not believe women are capable of serving in combat—even after nearly a decade of them doing so.
On Monday’s edition of Hannity, former Fox host and potential DOD head nominee Pete Hegseth gaslighted the American people into believing that he supports women in military when in reality he has repeatedly opposed women serving in the military.

SWAT CBS Series Finale; Criminal minds can now have Shemar Moore back.
The show ended on a good note; final episode was epic with the whole team working together to take down the bad guys as always.
Anything Shawn Ryan makes will always have an epic finale. Look at Sons of Anarchy? The ending was good, but it made closure happen. This was closure as well when 20 Squad stays liquid and fights to protect their city all over again day in and out.
I became a fan of this show when season 6 was just coming out, my mom and I loved this show, and we always talk about it. I binged it first and then she did. We just couldn't put it down because each episode was amazing.
But with a series ending there is still time for Shemar Moore to come back to Criminal Minds as Derek Morgan. Mainly because Derek can help out with what is going on in the show. Derek would know how to handle Elias Voit from the start. He may make the ladies heart's melt but hey he has good potential for a character.
There is a chance Paramount plus could take in SWAT, but anything is possible now.

Angel's descent into Darla begins.
Wait, that came out wrong.
The Darla-dreams are slowly taking over Angel's life. He's sleeping more but still exhausted. He doesn't tell anyone what's happening, likely because there's an element of shame here. Darla was evil and his time with her was some of the darkest of his life, and even some of these dreams feature times they killed innocents. But he's enjoying them anyway.
Cordelia and Wesley are left to liven up the Hyperion Headquarters. I sympathize with Cordelia's dusting struggles--after a couple layers dust turns into a strange glue-like substance. It's gonna take serious work to clean that place. This is when Gunn barges in expecting an appointment with Angel to investigate a snitch. He doesn't think much of getting Wesley and Cordelia's help instead.
When the group meets Jameel, a man promising to help them find Deevak in exchange for money, Gunn is relentless. It's clear his impatient, all-business attitude isn't reserved for Cordelia. Throughout the episode we see him making enemies left and right and even being harsh to the people he's supposed to be protecting. He's like a machine moving towards some unnamed goal and it seems likely to get him killed.
Cordelia has a vision of just that.
It's interesting seeing Angel's approach as a volunteer hero that runs a business vs. Buffy's destiny. We frequently see Buffy fatigued by her mission (she's always on call) or fighting monsters while her friends enjoy Prom. But here lies Angel, enjoying sexy time with Darla while armed-with-guts-and-an-ax Cordelia tries to save the day when he won't pick up the damn phone. Eventually Wesley wakes Angel, who attempts to strangle him for "making her go away". He has to be dragged to the mission.
Angel: It's just ... you know... there are visibility issues ... not to mention the whole hat head thing... and really when you think about it... How come I have to wear the Ladies' helmet? Wesley: Stop being such a wanker and put it on. (Angel puts on the hot pink helmet) Wesley: Looks good. Hop on board, gorgeous.
Cordelia is determined to protect Gunn, who seems bent on self-destruction. I get the sense he hasn't always been Mr. Abrasive. He has so much intel on his part of the city and such a solid network, it stands to reason he fostered good relationships at some point.
This is confirmed when a party in the neighborhood is attacked and someone almost ends up dead. Alonna's death has Gunn feeling the weight of responsibility and he's turned into a drill sergeant. Jameel hasn't taken too kindly to this treatment and is actually Deevak, which nearly gets them killed. The gang saves the day but Cordelia's vision hasn't been beaten. Gunn is on a self-destruct mission.
Darla: You give and you give and you give. Angel: I'm used to it. Darla: Always the protector, never the protected. Angel: I have so many things to make up for... Darla: And you have. You take care of so many people, but... who takes care of you? Angel: You do.
It's interesting seeing Darla seduce Angel. I think she's always understood his Angelus side and knows how to reel him in. The egotistical, selfish parts of Angel fall prey to Darla. We see that she's actually with Angel as he sleeps, not just in his mind.
Character Notes:
Angel: In his dream, he sings "Send in the Clowns" and "Tears of a Clown" to The Host. Both songs are about being foolish and rejected.
Charles Gunn: He calls Wesley C3-PO and Cordelia stick-figure Barbie. He says he hasn't bothered to see a movie since Denzel got robbed of the Oscar for Malcolm X, but it seems more likely he's too frenzied by the mission for movies.
Cordelia Chase: She seems reluctant to wake Angel. I think she knows he sleeps naked. David Nabbit offering financial advice gets her hot and sweaty. I really love her relationship with Dennis.
