You took a deep breath and threw open the door you'd been standing behind, making your friends almost jump out of their skin.

"Ah! H-hey bestie! How's it goin?"

You smiled evilly at your friend as the shouted at him, "Well look at that. I only have a few things to say to you. he enjoys doing kyouka's hair, dont get me wrong, but he thought it was just a kyouka only thing - after all how could atsushi not want to do things for kyouka who was like a sister and who deserved help or assistance in small things if she so asked - atsushi didn't realize how much he was doing it to show his own affection for her

he finds as he's brushing hair, that its just a way he's been showing kyouka he likes her and now w/ kunikida

anyway atsushi ends up braiding kuni's hair while he's working, and is buzzing with this newfound understanding of another way he can show affection

and with the comb tightly in his hand he asks if anyone else would like him to brush his hair, as nonchalantly as he can

naomi takes one look at his tail wagging, w/ atsushi unaware, and says yeah sure and lets him brush her hair and tie it up

she even tells him to brush juni's hair - which isn't long at all but its still fun

the next day yosano asks atsushi if he could tie up her hair and even ranpo lets him brush it back once

slowly atsushi works his way through everyone in the agency

other than dazai

atsushi offers his services to dazai too

but dazai always refuses - he jokes about atsushi only not doing his hair and when atsushi says he will, dazai gets weirdly quiet and changes the topic after a minute

atsushi does end up doing dazai's hair, not just brushing, but washing and drying and pushing it out of his face, but its on one of those weeks where dazai cant bring himself to even get out of bed and atsushi decides to take care of him instead

Okay so it's a mobile gacha game, let's get that out of the way. BUT LISTEN. 

The premise of the story is that the MC is a regular waitress in New York, when a foreign prince and his friends come to her table as a way to have a bachelor party for the prince who will soon have to choose a woman to marry in a The Bachelor -type of contest. MC and the prince hit it off pretty well and one of his friends, Maxwell, decides to throw in his lot with the MC, since the house the future queen is from gets a lot of perks and his family is Broke. MC goes along bc her job sucks ass and she figures why not.

BUT THEN! As the competition progresses, the MC spends a lot of time with the prince and other nobles, yes, but also with Maxwell. And Maxwell is a clown-type comic relief character for most of the time, but also genuinely sweet and considerate, and very much on the same wavelength with the equal goofball MC. What for me personally changed the game was when MC and Maxwell dance at a ball together, and the MC can say that there's no one they'd rather dance with than Maxwell. I myself chose that in a completely platonic bestie way. But he gets a bit panicky and says to be careful not to let anyone hear things like that when MC is in the running for the hand of the prince so that no one gets any wrong ideas! And I went "....ideas? 👀"

“Unlike other romancable characters, Maxwell isn't romancable until book 2 (the previous scene is in book 1, each book ~20 chapters), and unlike other romance options, you really have to have your eyes set on him in order to unlock his route, and ohhh it's so worth it! The set-up of falling for the person who brought you there to marry someone else, to choose the jester when you were meant to have the king.... exquisite. 

The dynamic between MC and Maxwell is so fun and full of genuine affection, and while other characters can dismiss Maxwell as an unserious clown, MC is very much characterised by the dialogue as Getting him and loving to express joy in life the same way he does. When MC and Maxwell can finally marry, it feels like they're really choosing their best friend to spend their lives with and are so excited about it.

I know this wrestles in a league multiple times smaller than many of the other combatants, but the Maxwell romance in genuinely one of my favourites in any video game. Give him a chance!”

oh my GOD where do I begin. Uhhhmmm. Okay. So Love & Passion is a chapter is the Sasaki and Miyano: First Years novel. Every chapter in that book is from a different characters perspective, and Love & Passion is from Tashiro’s POV. It is mostly about tashiros first year of high school and his joining of the ping pong club. Here look at the cover illustration

So like. There’s like. A Lot. Certifiably. Especially if you’re a tashiro enthusiast like me. Phenomenal characterization and narration that is usually very fun and lighthearted and tashiro-esque!

Gonzaburo Tashiro, first-year. At the moment, I’m facing an insurmountable barrier.

^ First lines of the chapter. He’s continuously very silly and like. Dramatic narrator. Yknow.

And such a personality lends itself to awfully poignant lines of crippling sincerity and simplicity that make me bawl my eyes out.

I don’t get it. What happened to the loneliness?

But of course tashiro doesn’t exist in a void to we have our delightful cast of his dear friends and acquaintances! Middle school bestie shirahama, who gets him into This Whole Mess (I’ll get to that later). Dearest Hanzawa Masato, who he makes various umh. Comments about.

“Game, set!” announced the referee, a second-year.

Man, he sounds so cool saying that.

As I stood there, drooping mentally and physically, I was approached by the guy who had refereed our match—the club’s vice president, Hanzawa.

And last but CERTAINLY not least. Dearest dearest previous president of the ping pong club!!!!

There he is. The saulty little binch on the right.

And if you’re wondering why we call him that. Well. He’s never given a name. Ha ha! But he has such a presence. The way he speaks and moves and looks feels so intentionally intense and like. designed. He’s so on purpose. Makes me wonder if we’ll ever get a spinoff of hanzawa masato[GETS SHOT] ha ha sorry who said that. Anyways

Dearest previous president (prev pres for short) and hanzawa torment poor tashiro. Endlessly. From the moment he joined the club—which was kind of an accident (he and shirahama joined just to check it out but eventually wanted to quit, but to quit you had to win a ping pong match. Shirahama won his match against a newbie easy peasy. Tashiro got matched up against the president of the club himself. Obviously couldn’t win and thus forced to join the club permanently)—from the moment he joined the club, prev pres and hanzawa are like. All over him. Obsessed with him. He tries to skip practice but both of them come drag him out of him classroom to come practice.

But despite his desire to not really be there, he takes club so seriously. He’s so sincere about it. He knows everyone else there is really passionate about ping pong so he cant let himself be the odd man out and rain on everyone’s parade. And this paradox—being so avoidant of the club but coming to care about it and bond with other members—really catches the eye of dearest prev pres.

“I thought Tashiro’d be spoiling for a fight, but he isn’t. That’s what makes him a genius worthy of my inner circle. Remember that, Hanzawa, ‘cause when I graduate, you’re gonna be the next club president.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And I think that guy might be a good successor to you!”

Dearest tashiro overhears this and promptly realizes the two freaks he’s met will not let him out of this. Ever. But he tells himself he’ll decline the offer. Surely they’ll find “someone more appropriate. Someone more serious about the club, maybe.”

And this is what like. Gets to the heart of this chapter. Love & Passion. AND REALLY QUICK touching on the fact that all the other chapters are named in ways that refer to specific characters. They’re all in pairs, and the chapter cover art reflects that too. She & Kuresawa. Miyano & Kuresawa. Sasaki & Miyano. Senior & Junior. SO IT MAKES YOU THINK. Who is love and who is passion. Anyways Tashiro meets and knows these various people around him and they’re all so passionate about what they do and what they like. Shirahama ends up joining the basketball club and gets really into it. Miyano and kuresawa are passionate about their books and clubs. Hanzawa and previous president are passionate about ping pong. Tashiro is passionate about… ? he doesn’t really know.

We so rarely know what other people’s passions are.

“Are you into anything, Tashiro?” Ms. Toyoda asked, and I flinched.

“Uh, me? I dunno. I guess I hadn’t really thought about it.” I racked my brain for anything I might be passionate about, but nothing came to mind.”

Later in the chapter he participates in a ping pong tournament and its like. He’s like the rush of it all and cheering for him teammates and stuff but. He doesn’t cry like everyone else when he loses.

Still, when I saw players from other school practically weeping when they lost, I couldn’t help wondering: What made them so different from me? I didn’t have the passion within me to cry when I lost.

Maybe that’s what real passion looks like. What did I have, then?

…

But something held me back, a sense that ‘passion’ was reserved for something you really, truly loved. Something you couldn’t replace, couldn’t even dream of giving up.

Ping-pong isn’t exactly the hill I would die on. But then again…

And he kinda goes through this arc where its like. Im not passionate about this like everyone else. But it has given me a goal to work towards.

And amidst all that We also get into what tashiro gets up to outside of school. Namely, he frequents a bath house where hes become the grandchild of all the old people that also frequent the place. And he also practices ping pong with his new grandpas, because he totally doesnt care about ping pong. He just. Wants to win. So he can beat the president and leave. Yeah thats it.

But he never does get around to beating the president before he has to graduate. Queue the moment that makes me the most insane

“So you’re never coming back, President?” I said.

“I ain’t President anymore.”

“Not the point! I haven’t beat you yet…” I clenched my fists, a yawning, lonely feeling of loss opening within me.

“Ahh. You mean the thing about getting to quit if you win? The next president’ll keep that promise. Dont’ you worry.”

“What?”

I don’t get it. What happened to the loneliness?

The new president—in other words, Hanzawa.

This like. Special relationship hes had with the president. This game of cat and mouse remains unfulfilled. And he feels loss and he feels lonely about it. But at the same time he can renew that relationship with Hanzawa. And it suddenly doesn’t feel so lonely anymore. And its the simplicity and bluntness of this whole exchange is what really sells it—tashiro is not particularly eloquent. He’s brash and blunt but extremely observant. And thats reflected in his chapters. He recognizes the ways other people interact with the world and their expressions and language. And its so like. Factual to him. It is the way it is. And that observancy is applied to himself too. This feels lonely. Oh. This doesn’t feel lonely anymore. But he doesnt necessarily have the self-reflection to understand why he feels certain things. Anyways.

taliiii my dear girl. she grew up on the station with just her mother and older brother (i think her dad walked out idgaf) and she was this little starfleet fanatic. wanted to get into the academy and become an officer, had all these posters, etcl. she wanted sooo badly to get off the station and prove to everyone that she could do it, because as a kid she hated seeing all these people resigned to their shitty jobs. her brother was a solar skipper and farily happy with his job. he took a rotation on the renaissance, a brand new ship, the ship disappeared, you know the rest. talii was 16/17 at this time and had just gotten her offer to starfleet academy. and she was obviously devastated but represses this bad and ends up going off to school anyway. has a total breakdown, makes no friends, spends all her time in her room, and fails out after her first semester and comes back home. everyones like omg!!! our talii is living her dream!! we cant believe you made it !!! and shes like loll yeah its so awesome!!! i flunked out. haha. she switched out of command (HER LIFELONG DREAM) and decided to work in ops/navigation as a skipper instead, fully resigned to the fact that she failed and will never amount to anything. girl has had like low-grade depression for years but never acknowledges it.

the homely ghost is a pretty well known and respectable ship, and the only way talii got to work on it was by lightly manipulating faduhl. she's like heyyyy your son died on the renaissance no way my brother did too!!!! (side note faduhls son, aubrey, and taliis brother were very good friends). and everyone on the ghost hates her because she's lazy and apathetic and never puts any actual work in. and she uses this as a little pity party like ohhhh my life is so hard no one likes me :'( even though she's choosing to be a petty mean bitch and act hostile to everyone.

she also hatessss jonathan SHE HATES HIM!!! she was the young inexperienced junior officer and everyone hated HER and then he walks on (young inexperienced junior officer) and everyone likes him and thinks he's nice. girl has 0 self reflection skills. alsoooo sidenote sidenote the talii/jonathan paralells they both grew up on the station and lost a family member to the job but jonathan represses this and is energetic and eager and this bright young officer whereas talii has accepted it and become resigned and apathetic to how much her life sucks.

torwardss the end in season 3 she does get some self reflection skills after chyell leaves and she starts becoming besties with jonathan. THEYYYY DO BECOME BESTIES... their relationship (slightly older junior officer/ unoffical mentee slash bestie) parallels her brothers relationship with aubrey. since jonathan is alwaysss living in his shadow being compared to that bitch).

oh also her mom very fanatically thinks her older brother is alive out there and waiting to come home (his death really just broke her) and talii retaliates by believing he's stone cold dead and refusing to even say he's "missing". she has crazy mommy issues. in a draft (HAVENT DECIDED IF ILL KEEP IT BUT ITS FUNNY AS HELL) she has another older brother who's off in another system basically this like 30 year old stoner that she has like nooo contact with. and he shows up one day and she's like ugh this is my stupid brother. and everyone like. YOUR BROTHER??? and she's like ughhhh no the other one. the lame one. which makes it so funny that she was obsessed with getting off the station WHEN SHE HAD A DIRECT FAMILY MEMBER WHO DID. SHE JUST NEVER MENTIONS HIM.

• Charlie Brown taught Sally sign language (ASL) all throughout her childhood. She can ‘speak’ full sentences fluently and DEFINITELY uses it to her advantage (signs curses when the teacher isn’t looking /jj). The signs come in handy when Charlie Brown goes non-verbal (selective mutism)

• Lucy has terrible hearing and has had to wear hearing aides since she was like 5. Charlie Brown keeps stressing that she should learn ASL in case of emergency, but she always refuses (“I’d rather DIE than have to learn English again.” /j)

• Schroeder and Patty are cousins; his dad and her mom are German/Polish. Schroeder’s mom is black (Somalian) and Indian, and Patty’s dad is Swedish and Kazakhstanian. Patty bonds over Schroeders love for German history and loves teaching him about their family heritage (schroeder zones out until beethoven is mentioned)

• Lucy has a separate birth dad (Balkan) than Rerun and Linus’ dad (Irish). All three of them have the same mom, who I think is a Chinese immigrant who moved to America (along with their “blanket hating Grandmother”). Linus and Rerun are both “Rainbow children”, due to their mother losing a baby before Linus was born

• I saw somebody on tik tok say that Snoopy was Filipino-American, and honestly i cant unsee it /hj

• Marcie was born in Korea and was adopted by French immigrants in America. She grew up primarily learning French and a little bit of English due to the books in her house. When she met P. Patty at the summer camp, she was taught the ins and outs of American culture and still relies on her every once in a while (marcie calls her “sir” solely because she didn’t know the feminine English pronouns for an authoritative figure)

• Frieda and Heather (the little red haired girl) are half siblings. They share the red hair and the sharp nose trait (i think theyre both roman-italian bcs of it). Heather has the coveted “nAtuRAllY CuRLy HaiR” trait as well, she just burns it straight every single morning (i like drawing it frizzy asl)

• Violet is of Native American descent (mother’s side) and Black Irish (father’s side). When she first moved in in the comic (1951), she lived with both parents, but around late 1951, she moved AGAIN, so that makes me think her parents got a divorce between those two moves. Her mom quickly married a British person (ew /j) who hated all the tom-boyish crap violet was always seen doing, so he started to push his uppity customs onto her. This, I think, is why she’s so upset at Pig Pen all the time for him being messy, despite her literally being OBSESSED with mud-pie making in her first set of comics. She just has a random change there, and a different (british) influence is the only explanation /j

• Franklin LOVESSS space and science. He aspires to be an astronaut when he grows up. He often gets in arguments with Lucy about the validity of aliens existing, and it’s one of the few things that REALLYYY tick him off. Lucy revels to see him so stressed out, but she also likes getting the last word in.

• Peggy Jean (who? /jj) and Schroeder are besties, i think. They bond over talking crap about the other peasants and Peggy loves pissing him off. They have a kind of sibling relationship, where they outwardly insult each other and wish the lather were dead, but lets be real, they would die for each other.

• Peppermint Patty is originally from Australia and met Roy through a foreign-exchange program (Roy is originally from India). They were besties at camp and when P. Patty’s dad decided to live there, she offered to let Roy stay with them. They lived together for a long time until Roy moved out with his parents (now in America) and they kinda drifted away. It’s just whenever I recall that one scene in “He’s your dog, Charlie Brown” when Roy is in P. Patty’s house for some reason, im always confused, so this is canon now/jj

Ok while all of our hearts are collectively breaking, I wanted to share a little irl story that I think about whenever I reread LTHY. When one of my best friends, who suffers from anxiety, started seeing her now husband, I asked her mom what she thought of him. And she told me she thought he was perfect for my bestie because "he's so patient with her." And that just really stuck with me because that's not a compliment you hear about people, especially men, often. You'd be more likely to hear something like, "he takes such good care of her" or something like that... but patient? What a beautiful thing to be for another person. To be someone who gives someone else the support, time, space, and compassion to work through things on their own. To show them love, respect, and acceptance of who they are.

Anyways, whenever I read LTHY I always think of this moment because Jungkook is just so patient with OC and it really is so beautiful. Despite the tough ending to this most recent chapter, he was so patient with her when he came to pick her up at the mall and as she tried on her outfits. Even as she was fighting with him outside of his parents house, he was so patient and understanding, knowing that it was probably her anxiety and trauma talking. And our poor OC can feel it, and is frustrated by it, hence her screaming "why are you like this?!". Because she doesn't feel like someone who is deserving of patience, so it doesn't make sense to her. But she does deserve it and I hope that eventually she can love herself enough to accept his patience.

Are there things that both OC and Jungkook need to personally work on for the sake of their well-being as well as their relationship? A thousand percent. But what I really want is for OC to stop shaming herself for the way she is. She already feels really badly about herself due to her experience with Jaehwa, but I think an important thing this chapter highlighted was that she's compounding that with feeling horrible about herself for how she's reacted to that trauma and how it affects the way she behaves in her current relationship. She can't erase that trauma from her past completely, so my wish for her is the self-acceptance that she may be just someone who needs a little more assurance and patience while she's working through that trauma.... and more importantly that she's deserving of someone who is willing to accept her with those scars and meet those needs. But until she's receptive to it and feels she's deserving of it, all of the patience in the world won't be enough unfortunately. Giving someone else patience is really extraordinary, but it's even more extraordinary to be accepting of deserving patience.

i definitely agree with you anon!! youre really pointing out some of the few things i really tried to hint at in the chapter! oc says it herself too actually both in the chapter "How even if you tried, he remained patient with you." and here. jk's patience surprises her over and over again. in the end, i think just because of his seemingly unwavering patience jk is able to be so understanding and empathetic towards oc. and its exactly that patience that oc cant accept because of what happened with jaehwa and her. they broke up just like that. there was no time, no patience. she was dropped like a hot potato and told to move on just like that.

i think even more than that its glaringly obvious also that oc never really offers herself any kind of patience. she gets so in her head and critises herself so much, how could she possibly go ahead and accept jk's patience?

both of them have a lot to figure out and i genuinely feel for oc so much because god knows that shes been through enough.

He just happily smiles "I think she just missed me thats all, I miss her too when the sun is up" You smile and rest your head against his strong arm while looking down at your daughter.
