At least in my circles...

The Residence

It's Knives Out style fun with a Black female main character detective, Cordelia Cupp (played by Uzo Aduba) who could arguably be autistic, although it's never stated outright.

I won't say she's exactly supposed to be a Sherlock Holmes variation, although there are certainly nods like the English tweed jacket, sitting in an armchair across from suspects in a well-appointed drawing room during interviews, and getting cheek-to-rug to pick up clues.

There is also a sidekick detective played by Randall Park, although I didn't get any Watson vibes from him and there's not any friendship between them. He mostly just follows her around.

The cast is diverse, with a background gay couple (one of whom happens to be the President of the United States). Why no Tumblr love?

Under the Moon of London Town

"A high moon tonight Watson" Holmes muses, as he stands looking out the great window, partially silhuetted in the light, "Much of London will be out." He turns his head to look at me "Shall we join them?"

"You always say that there is hardly any crime, and yet much risk, being out on Full Moon nights." I point out these facts from my usual seat on the far side of the fire.

Holmes lips press a little, but I see his eyes spark, and the corners of his mouth turn up. "Perhaps, my dear Watson, but there is Chance as well. His eayes postively gleam as he moves across the room with great steps "Will I see you downstairs?" he asks, almost in passing, as he sweeps through towards his room

"You will." For all I played Devil's Advocate, I at my heart, have a hankering for adventure, it was not merely patritism, and certainly not finace which had led me to the Army- shocking as that might be tro some readers.

I hear Holmes door click and rise, gathering my coat and stick. I go out the front way, wishing "Good Evening" to Mrs Hudson on both of our behalfs. Then I turn the edge of Baker Street, around to the gate of the yard at the back, and ease it open.

A lithe black shape with keenly pricked ears trotted out, carrying a thick leather lead in it's mouth, which it held out to me. I took it and clipped the lead onto the simple collar, also black leather, that he wore. He didn't need it, of course, but it would incite comment and unwanted attention on the street

Then we turned and walked back onto the street, just a man and his faithful hound out for an evening consititutional. I should of course, reverse the appellation, for it was more strictly a Hound and his faithful follower.

I had no particular idea where Holmes would lead me tonight, only that he had a fancy on this occasion for excercising his canine senses in place of his almost-as-pestigious human ones.

It was bright and easy to see about me, with the good moon, but for Holmes in this form it would be as bright as daytime, and the smells of the city would make a map as readable to him as those printed on paper are to me - so he has explained to me. So I follow the slight tugs on the lead, and let us weave through the streets of London, the flopped ears pricked as high as they may be with interest.

A/N I imagine Holmes canine form to be something like a Flat Coat Retriever

They mentioned the anniversary of their (unofficial but emotionally important) wedding and the bbc characters were like ummmm awkward for the producers

*turns up after a billion days of silence to share a cursed concept* tonight i dreamt of a multiverse-style sherlock holmes movie where there were both book!sherlock and watson and bbc!sherlock and watson

in my brain's defense the book version figured out the culprit of the murder

I am listening to The Angel of the Crows and am about an hour and a half in. I’m enjoying it so far, but I am hoping that it ends up having a little more going on than being yet another retelling of A Study in Scarlet with a twist.

Omg FRRR??? I think I became more hyper aware of our interactions since the secret santa started and I felt like you were interacting with my posts more and I was like omg she knowwws she has to know 😭😭😭 and the only reason I could come up with a gifset like that was cuz I procrastinated so hard LOL but I was planning on doing it last night actually (since I thought the reveal was supposed to be nearer to actual Christmas) but then I started seeing people posting their gifts and I panicked LMAOOO

It was so funny it took me so long to track down a friend who had watched the series and she wasn’t a swiftie so it was hilarious how the two of us were trying to get our two brain cells to work tgt AHAHAH so I kept throwing lines/themes of the songs to her and she’d suggest which characters they could apply to, the hardest most time consuming part was finding which season and episode to get footage from (I had to do that part myself cuz by the time I realised I needed help with that too it was like 11 pm so I was like yolo AHAHHA I was literally googling the characters and matching their photos to their scenes cuz I was like Kara??? Reese????? Who are these people???????)

I'm not sure if this will make it into a Sherlock Holmes fic I'm writing or not, if I'm honest probably not - BUT I'm incapable of keeping something so funny (to me) by myself! so here is the excerpt that made me giggle at my drafts today:

Holmes’ out-of-context conversation starters had become something I expected, though they still often surprised me, I was no longer bewildered or startled by them, as I had been when we first started our acquaintance. My friend’s mind could drift anywhere and alight on the most minute and intricate of matters, which would escape the notice of the general population. Though, I can hardly put into words my astonishment of what his opening words were when I entered 221B that afternoon. “Bees, Watson!” “Bees?” “Yes, bees. I have become intrigued by their structures, Watson – it is most fascinatingly detailed, and I must gather more data on the subject.” Holmes stood by the window, face turned at an angle, for the benefit of addressing me whilst still being able to watch the passers-by below, pale afternoon light highlighting his profile. As I set down my things and settled into my chair, he stayed there, pensive, I observed, given that his hands were steepled under his chin. “Is this for a case?” I asked, wondering if there were connections I had not yet seen.

It’s so wild to think about that less than a year ago I only had six posted fics to choose from and now I have thirty-seven. So this was a hard choice… but in no particular order, here are my tentative top five!

Midnight Marauders - My longest fic, clocking in at more than 17k! It’s for The Great Ace Attorney, and chronicles how a young Herlock Sholmes met, befriended, and eventually moved in with a certain traumatized doctor, with a mixture of humor, drama, and warm-hearted pathos. I hadn’t read A Study in Scarlet when I started writing this, so the meeting is wholly original! (Perhaps Iris took some creative liberties.)

The Musgrave Ritual Sacrifice - My second-longest fic at more than 14k! It considers how the events of canon Sherlock Holmes story “The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual” might have played out in the eldritch horror universe of Neil Gaiman’s “A Study in Emerald”. Follow the brilliant detective, his partner, and their quiet, fond romance through a world of terror, mystery, and doubt.

i’ve studied how to properly love - Did you ever watch Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century and think to yourself, “Jesus Christ, the deeper implications of this children’s cartoon are absolutely horrific”? Then this fic is for you! It manifests as a journal written not by Watson, but by his robot imitation, as he worries over the newly-resurrected Holmes (who has convinced himself the robot Watson is the real man he loved), the self-destructive, guilt-ridden Beth Lestrade, and his own feelings, sentience, and sense of self. One of my favorite things I’ve ever written, actually.

A Proper Celebration - A sequel to an adorable Jeeves-Holmes crossover ficlet by Loremaiden, this is a short little oneshot about Bertie getting published for the first time, and fellow author and lifelong supporter Watson coming from Sussex along with Holmes to congratulate him. By far the fluffiest entry on this list. (And I’m a bit proud of managing a decent Bertie Wooster POV voice that people seemed to like!)

To Taste Death Valiantly - I love the Raffles stories by E. W. Hornung. I also love the 1971 cult film They Might Be Giants, an odd romantic comedy about a man who thinks he’s Sherlock Holmes and the doctor named Mildred Watson who is assigned to look after him. So I thought to myself: what if there was a Raffles version of the same story - but this time they were both girls?? Thus, this is the tale of Sarah “Bunny” Mathers, failed writer and suicidal housewife, and how a chance meeting with a beautiful, delusional burglar gives her a new reason to live. Probably the nichest entry on this list, but I had a lot of fun writing it.

His eyes shone, and his cheek was flushed with the exhilaration of the master workman who sees his work lie ready before him. A very different Holmes, this active, alert man, from the introspective and pallid dreamer of Baker Street. I felt, as I looked upon that supple figure, alive with nervous energy, that it was indeed a strenuous day that awaited us.

(Aside: I do enjoy that while they’re approaching middle age Watson is as Disaster Bi as ever and wants us all to know that Sherlock Holmes Still Got It)
