Real talk out of pure curiosity: I saw you posted you were working on chapter 59? Of your fic

How do you have the motivation to write 59 chapters of a fic? Or I guess how do you keep inspiration for it?

I tend to lose inspiration after like three chapters rip

Real talk: I've been working on chapter 59 for 3 months. XD

The story in question (Hypnotic Nightmare - AFO x F!Reader - TW: noncon/abusive relationship/non-reader directed violence) has been going since October 2020. It's 265,000 words and rising. I also have A Taste of Your Own Venom (Shigaraki Tomura x F!Reader - TW: consensual relationship but Tomura is pretty obviously a yandere) which is about 197,000 words and my original, professionally published book Maid For Your Master which is about 86,000 words (Gothic romance, horror, F!Reader insert, TW available here) and I am working on the sequel.

There are a few things that help me out writing these monsters:

I like slow burn relationships. Smut is great and all, but I need the back story to be seduced.

I binge produce 10-20k words at a time then take several weeks off to chill.

I try to have multiple projects so that when I can't work on one **cough cough Venom**, I work on another.

I don't post the chapters right away. I used to, but I find that writing them out, holding them back until I've started working on the next chapter, and editing them one more time before the post works best. Ideally, I like to work 5 chapters ahead because it lets me add new ideas and then build them in to previous chapters. This makes it more fun and less stressful.

I have an ending in mind before I post. This allows me to work towards an specific point which is satisfying to readers, even if I get distracted by writing out every kink on earth (eg. Hypnotic) or I need a break (Venom).

I don't post everything I write. I write out tons and tons of ideas and wait to see if I have the motivation to finish them. For example, I have a 5 chapter outline for a yandere professor Overhaul story which is waiting in the wings to be posted. Been working on that for two years.

I don't hold back when a short fic idea hits just right. That is why we've had things like Red Sky at Morning (AFO x F!reader - dubcon merman) and Hands-On Instruction (AFO x F! or M! reader - dubcon professor x college student). If someone suggests something and it sparks joy, I write it. If if doesn't, either because it's not my bag or I'm too over stressed to work on it right then, I usually just reply in private.

Truth is #4 is not happening with Hypnotic right now because these are the final chapters. I am hoping to make 60 the last and then write an epilogue to give closure.

Another thing to consider is that, for long fics (eg. > 5 chapters), I don't recommend posting them on Tumblr. Tumblr gets buggy after about 2k words, can randomly drop your post and seems to hate extensive formatting (eg - glitches after you make so many formatting changes or tags). Also, based on my two years of fanfic experience on this site, Tumblr users don't engage much with long fic as a rule. They prefer headcannons, short smut (eg - one chapter), witty one liners, etc.

For proof of this, let me point out that Part III of Feeling The Spirit has 89 likes and 25 reblogs. The <200 word SFW drabble I posted last night of Tomura clutching a plushie while gaming? Over 100 likes and 12 reblogs in 6 hours. Tumblr like fast and furious content.

Archive of Our Own is much better for long fic. The website is more stable, formatting is much better with HTML (see the text bubble exchange in the first chapter of Liar Played by the Heartstrings - it's my crowning glory), it's easier to scroll between chapters, and long fics do better with their algorithm. The more chapters you post to one story on Ao3, the more your fic gets bumped to the top, the more people see it. Tumblr shows your story more based on reblogs, so you want things that people can quickly agree with and move along because that's what they reblog.

If you're writing on Tumblr alone, losing motivation in 3 chapters makes sense because engagement drops like crazy. On Ao3, engagement doesn't really take off until chapter 10-15 (where people can binge read your stuff), so it's more motivating.

The honest truth is though - this is my natural temperament:

Ask anyone who has had the misfortune to DM me. My mouth doesn't have an off switch. One of my commenters on Feeling The Spirit compared me to Victor Hugo because I spent an entire chapter introducing the haunted house.

So... for example... Hypnotic started as a 5 chapter project... and then it kinda ran away with itself.

Honestly, the thing for me is that writing is a hobby, not my day job. I just write when it makes me happy and then post it slowly when I have enough content for people to enjoy. That keeps the pressure off and lets me share my messed up brain with all of you.

Shigaraki was beginning to get annoyed. He swore he’d blown out the candle like five times already, and yet every time he turned around to go to bed already it had relit. It wasn’t bad enough that he was being forced to work by candlelight since the old, run-down building they were squatting in had no electricity, but now the damn thing just wouldn’t go out.

This time, he glared at it after he blew on it, willing the glowing ember to fizzle out in a wisp of smoke. It stayed like that, faded, glowed, faded… then flickered into flame again. He swore loudly and resisted the urge to knock the damn thing over, only to be met with laughter from behind him. He turned to see Dabi holding his sides like he was about to split, and his eyes narrowed, the pieces falling into place.

“You.” He hissed venomously, and Dabi wiped away a tear.

“What? You wanted me to train my quirk. I’m improving my fine control. Big, sweeping walls of flame are all very well and good but sometimes you gotta do somethin’ a bit more subtle, don’tcha think?”

“Subtle isn’t in your repertoire.” Shigaraki grumbled, going over to him and past him.

“Hey, hey.” Dabi caught his arm and stopped him. “Where d’you think you’re going?”

“Uh… bed?”

“I don’t think so.” Dabi backed him into the wall, and tilted his chin up. Shigaraki narrowed his eyes again.

“You’re wearing heels.”

“Am not!” He looked affronted.

“Yes you are. You’re not that much taller than me most of the time.”

“Shut up I am too.” Dabi leaned into him, smelling of fireplace cinders and burned meat. It was a familiar smell, by this point. Shigaraki glanced down at his feet, noting the chunky soles of his combat boots.

“Uh huh. So why are you stopping me from going to bed?”

“Because it looked to me,” Dabi caught his lips in a soft kiss, “like you were going by yourself,” another kiss, “and we can’t have that.” This time, he pushed Shigaraki flush against the wall, and kissed him far more deeply, parting those cracked lips with his tongue, and pushing a thigh up between Shigaraki’s legs. Shigaraki gasped into his mouth, responding eagerly. When they broke it, both of them were panting softly, and Shigaraki looked at him through his lashes.

“I’m too tired.”

Dabi pouted. “Really?”

“Yeah.”

“You’re such a cocktease.”

“Hey.” Shigaraki jabbed the centre of his chest with a fingertip. “You came to me. You started bothering me with the fucking candle. You stopped me going to bed. You shoved me against the wall and kissed me. You’re the one doing all the teasing.”

“Yeah, but you tease me just by existing.” Dabi slid a hand around to the small of his back and kissed the scars on his neck. Shigaraki let out a breath, tilting his head back to bare his throat.

“The others will hear, Dabi…”

“Only if you’re loud…” He purred, mouthing over his Adam’s apple. “C’mon. At least let me share the bed.”

Shigaraki huffed, but caved. “Fine, fine. You can sleep with me.”

“Score.” Dabi grinned. He took Shigaraki’s hand, and led him through to the scruffy office room with a mattress shoved against the wall and piled up with sheets and pillows that Shigaraki had co-opted as a bedroom. It wasn’t spectacular, but it did the job it needed to. Almost immediately, Dabi was tugging off his clothes, putting lean muscle and rippling scars on show. Shigaraki lazily shucked off his own coat and tugged off his shirt, kicking off his shoes and jeans. He laid back on the mattress, and no sooner was his back on the fabric then Dabi was hovering overhead, grinning wickedly. He kissed him again, rougher this time, and ran a warm- always so warm- hand up Shigaraki’s front. The same flame that had lit that infuriating candle burned steadily behind his eyes, and Shigaraki wrapped his legs around Dabi’s waist.

“It’s my birthday today, you know.” He breathed between kisses, making Dabi stop and pull back.

“Really?”

“It could be.” He admitted. His birthday, like his name, had been granted to him. He had no way of telling if it truly was the day of his birth, or just the day when he and Sensei had celebrated it.

Four-four.” Dabi mused. “Of course it is.” Then he went right back to Shigaraki’s neck, leaving bites and bruises in his skin.

Shigaraki was not quiet, and Dabi did not make it easy for him to try to be. Every touch, every motion, every kiss was designed to get the most out of him and damn was he good at it, leaving Shigaraki breathless and begging. And just because it was his birthday- just because of your birthday, Dabi claimed- he let Shigaraki just lay back and enjoy it, lavishing all the attention his body deserved. Both of them knew it would not be the first or last time that Dabi found an excuse to worship his boss’s body. And in the aftermath, Dabi curled around him, chest to his back, feeling his slim frame move ever so slightly with every breath in and out. He brushed Shigaraki’s hair aside, and kissed the outer shell of his ear.

“Tomura?”

“Mm?”

“Why didn’t you tell us it was your birthday sooner?”

Shigaraki considered that. “It feels wrong,” he admitted, “to celebrate something like that right now. Without Sensei, and without Kurogiri. Whilst we’re living in a shitty dump like this. Celebrations should be reserved for good times.”

“I dunno.” Dabi murmured, holding Shigaraki to his chest. “In the grand scheme of my life, this feels like a pretty damn good time to me.”

Shigaraki drew lazy patterns on the back of Dabi’s hand, and not for the first time wondered what it was in Dabi’s past that haunted him quite so badly. “Fair enough. We’ve celebrated now, haven’t we?”

“Mm.”

A beat passed, and then another, and slowly, Shigaraki’s racing mind began to fall into the fog of sleep.

“Tomura?” Dabi’s voice tore him out of it ungracefully, almost startled him.

“Mm?”

Dabi took a deep breath, and Tomura felt a creeping sense of dread that Dabi knew his words were going to ruin the moment. “I’m sorry?”

“For what?”

“I left the candle lit.”

Shigaraki Week Day 1

Cleaning up in the aftermath of a battle was never fun. Even in his tenth year of being a full-fledged hero, Izuku hated seeing the wreckage of buildings, the crushed remains of what used to be someone’s workplace, their livelihood, their home. As the dust settled and people nursed injuries, cried over their losses, he picked his way through the rubble to the medics, checking in to make sure all the civilians who had been caught up in the fight were okay. It was something he did whenever he could, and always asked if he could provide any resources or a helping hand to make things easier.

It was as he was helping carry a box full of medical supplies that he felt a tug on his leg, gentle but insistent. He stopped and looked down, eyes widening a little when he saw the child clinging to the leg of his hero suit. Setting the box down, he crouched down and addressed the boy.

“Hey there. What’s up?”

The child had messy dark hair that covered his face, his clothes ragged. He looked skinny, and far too young to be alone. Little more than a toddler. The kid muttered something, tugging on the hem of his shirt. Izuku smiled apologetically.

“Sorry. I didn't quite catch that. Can you speak up, please?”

It was then that the boy looked up, pushing his hair out of his eyes, and Izuku stifled a gasp. The boy’s eyes were a vivid, startling red, the skin around his eyes and up his forehead afflicted with a condition that Izuku had only ever seen in one other person- the villain who had come dangerously close to irreversibly destroying society in Japan. The reason why so many things about his adult world were so different to the one he grew up in. But he held it in, and swallowed it down.

“Can you help me?” The child asked in a tiny, wavering voice, and Izuku’s heart went out to him.

“Of course. What do you need? Are you lost?”

He shook his head, eyes swimming with tears. Izuku frowned.

“Have you been separated from your parents?”

“I… don’t know…”

“Um… can you tell me where they are?”

“No…” The boy sniffled and wiped his eyes, scratching a rough patch on his cheek.

“Hey…” Izuku took his wrist gently, stopping him from hurting himself. “It’s okay. We’ll find them.” He sincerely hoped they weren’t amongst those who had been seriously injured in the fight. “What do they look like?”

“I don’t know…” The boy said again, and shivered, tears finally spilling down his cheeks.

“Oh… Okay…” Izuku murmured, offering his arms. “Come here.” The child fell into his embrace, sobbing quietly. Izuku had a nasty feeling that this boy had been abandoned, that he didn’t have anywhere to go back to. Certainly his appearance suggested neglect. “Alright… You come with me, okay? I’ll make sure you’re taken care of… safe.”

He took the boy back to the police station, gave him a toy to play with as they searched the database for any record of a missing child reported. No results showed up, and Izuku found himself watching the boy play rather than the text on the police officer’s computer screen. He was still quiet, even as he muttered to himself the plotline of the game he was playing with himself. Izuku didn’t want to admit it, but there was a certain light in the boy’s eyes, a quiet fanaticism, which reminded him again of Shigaraki. He tried to write it off as just being because of the similarity in his skin condition, but even so, something about it was uncanny.

“I’m sorry, Midoriya-san. I don’t think we can help. We could call social services, but…”

“No, don’t worry about it.” Izuku murmured. “Just keep looking. I’ll take care of him for now.”

“Are you sure? Looking after a child that young… and we don’t even know the boy’s name, or if he has a quirk.”

“It’s alright. My mum’ll be able to help.”

“…Okay. Good luck, Midoriya-san. We’ll keep you updated.”

Izuku nodded, and went back to the child’s side, addressing him again. “Okay, we’re done here. Are you hungry?”

The boy looked up at him with those unnerving red eyes and nodded. Izuku bent down and offered his arms, and the boy let himself be picked up, toy and all. “Hey, we should give that back now.” Izuku tried to take it, but the boy hugged it tightly to his chest, staring at him resolutely. Izuku sighed, and turned to the police officer. “Can he keep it? It’s the only thing he has.”

The officer looked up, and smiled. “Sure. It just came from lost and found, so…”

“Thank you.” Izuku adjusted his hold on the boy, and they left together. “Hey… Are you gonna tell me your name yet?” He asked as the boy made the little toy walk up and down his chest.

“Don’t know it.” The boy murmured, and Izuku blinked. He was starting to wonder if the kid was suffering memory problems.

“Okay.” He relented. He’d have to come up with something to call the kid sooner or later, if he was going to be staying with him.

He picked up a snack for the boy at the local store, as well as a few other bits and pieces, and headed home. As soon as they were in Izuku’s house, and the kid was sat at the kitchen table with his snack and a glass of juice, he called his parents.

“Hey mum. Hey dad.” He waved at Inko and Toshinori when they appeared on screen. They both smiled as they greeted him in return.

“To what do we owe this call?” Toshinori asked, and Izuku rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

“Listen… this is gonna sound really weird, but… do you believe in reincarnation?”

They exchanged a look, and Inko asked, “Honey, you know we support you no matter what religion you choose to-”

“Not like that.” Izuku cut her off, glancing over at the boy who had to lift the glass of juice with both of his tiny hands. “Today… did you see the news? The fight?”

“With that plant-manipulating villain, right?” Toshinori asked, and Izuku nodded.

“Yeah, that one… Well, afterwards, this kid came up to me…” Izuku dropped his voice so the boy wouldn’t hear him. “He says he doesn’t know anything about his parents… he doesn’t even know his own name, but I took him to the police station and they couldn’t find any reports of any missing kids matching his description. Dad, he looks like-” He swallowed, “-He looks like Shigaraki.”

Toshinori’s eyes widened. It had long been one of his greatest regrets that he hadn’t been able to save Shigaraki, the man who had been incarcerated after he had finally been defeated at been too far gone to be saved, and had faced execution for his crimes. Toshinori had never forgiven himself for what he saw as letting Nana’s grandson die.

“Is he… with you?”

“Yeah. He’s-” Izuku subtly flipped the camera and showed them the kid, managing to do it without his noticing. “He’s staying with me for now, but I don’t know- I don’t even know what to call him.”

“Tenko.” Toshinori said, his voice thick as Izuku turned the camera back to see him again. “Call him Tenko.”

Izuku nodded softly. “…Okay. What should I… do?”

“Just look after him. If they find his family, then return him, but until then… make sure he’s looked after.”

“I can give you some tips honey, and if you ever need a hand, just let me know.” Inko interrupted, and Izuku smiled.

“Okay. Thanks mum.”

After a little more talking, Tenko finished his food and slid out of the kitchen chair to begin exploring, and Izuku had to hang up to watch over him.

Over the next few weeks, Tenko settled in. Izuku fed him, bathed him, gave him the spare room as his bedroom, and began buying the things he would need to look after a child. Despite the unnerving look that never left his eyes, Izuku quickly grew fond of him. Inko and Toshinori visited to help him set up and prepare to raise the boy, and neither Toshinori nor Izuku could stop Inko from getting far too excited about playing the role of grandma. Tenko remained quiet but amicable, curious and oddly intelligent, and accepted his new name with no fuss. Wherever it was he had come from, this situation was clearly new and much, much better, and he took to it like a duck to water.

The police never called, and slowly, Midoriya Tenko became a part of the family. And a greying, ageing All Might watched his adopted grandson with a gentle smile, wondering that maybe the universe had decided to give Shigaraki Tomura a second chance, after all.

This is going to be my own fic wrap up, my first one ever because this was the birth of my Ao3 account, so all of my fics are from this year. I’ll try to keep things concise, but it’ll still be pretty long. I will do this in the form of a Read More after the first few fics. There are over 90, I’ll try to go alphabetically. 

All of them are from the same fandom, BnHA, so that’s nice. More gen fics, less romance. Most of them are for series, events, other people’s aus - and I’ll make sure to share all of that when I share each fic, especially because some of the events are probably repeats and this is a little bit like free marketing [only tagging them once because that would get obnoxious, especially for the weekly event things I did]. Other than that, I hope you all enjoy and may 2021 suck slightly less.

Walking Back - EraserMight, 1.5K. When Yagi thinks that Aizawa looks too tired to get back to the dorms on his own, he does his best to help him. It ends with a bit of a shock [for OTPtober] 

Warranted Interruptions - Gen, 1K. Monoma and Aizawa don’t interact often, which is fine with the both of them - but that doesn’t mean that Aizawa can ignore when someone is hurting [for @/dadzawa-week-2020] 

Winter Home - TodoMomo, 1K. Todoroki ends up going with Yaoyorozu on a family vacation and feels welcomed [for @/todomomoweek2020]

Deku, Uraruka and Todoroki can't win either way really and it's just so sad to see. It both comes down to both sides criticising the kids for the same thing that's that they care too much. Those who wanted Deku to have more conflicts hate that he didn't because he cared too much. Those who want Uraruka and Shouto to only care about how Toga and Touya were hurt only criticises them because they care about people and the hurt the lov is causing to them as well too much. The thing is Deku, Urakura and Todoroki both care about the people which the lov are hurting due to their actions and their individual villain and they are all trying to balance these feelings out and are likely just so confused on what they should do. They are 16 years old they aren't always going to know what the right decision is especially in times like this where they can't ignore that the lov needs help but at the same time they can't just ignore the pain the lov are causing. These kids care and it's so sad how heavily criticised they are getting because of it.

They really can’t win.

And literally I know this because you can say everyone would have been satisfied with Shouto and Ocha just outright saying “idc what they did, I’m gonna save them”, but reactions from last year when Deku did just that tell me otherwise. When chapter 305 dropped people complained. And when chapter 342 dropped people complained.

For me, I think everyone’s reactions make sense for their characters. They’re all learning. Shouto is battling his own inner demons while also wanting to rid Touya of his. Shouto wants his family whole and right now as things are (from the POV of Shouto) it doesn’t look possible. Touya is in handcuffs. Nothing has changed for the better yet. Shouto looked broken after his fight. Ochacko is trying to reconcile Toga’s actions with the fact that she now feels sympathy for her. Trying to decipher Toga’s words that went over her head, figuring out why Toga cried that day, figuring out what Toga is looking for out of life. Because she doesn’t know. Right now, she knows almost nothing. Obviously I think that’s gonna change pretty soon. Hell even Deku himself still has a lot to learn about Shigaraki, he’s still in the dark on a lot. He only pieces together words from their previous interactions to try to figure out what Shig wants.

I just wish it wasn’t a constant negative wave of reactions every week. I only got into the series in late 2020 but in the short time the energy of the fandom took a huge shift toward being bitter and mad all the time. I miss my earlier experience here lol
