Kumogakure Worldbuilding II

Dating and marriage in Kumogakure

Kumogakure is filled with a lot of different people, so finding a partner is rather easy. Unlike Kirigakure, which is rather traditional, casual relationships and hookups are not a rarity here. There is not a huge emphasis on marriage, and there are even people who do it for tax reasons alone. Tax reasons being the tax incentive given by the Kumogakure government to encourage the people to have children. Since Kumo lacks established shinobi clans and kekkei genkai wielders, they always try to lure foreigners to move to their village and start a family here.

Family dynamics

To ensure that children grow up happy and healthy, Kumogakure has established daycare facilities for the children of its workers, including shinobi, as it is simply the most economical to do so. Same goes for adoption, as Kumo has made it possible for couples (no matter if hetero, homo, mono or poly) to adopt children if they are able to afford it. Adoption is not looked down upon and a part of Kumo family culture.

Side-headcanon: Kumogakure shinobi like Karui probably have English (Kumo's language) names, but adapt Japanese (Konoha's language) 'nicknames' (Karui literally means lightweight/light) over time.

The Kumogakure shinobi academy

Unlike in Konoha, Kiri, Iwa and Suna, going to the shinobi academy in Kumo will actually cost you a bit of money. It is not outrageously high and based on your income, but it will cost you. Richer families have the opportunity to hire private tutors for their kids, and the percentage of privately payed 101 shinobi tutors is the highest across the continent.

Another thing that makes Kumo special is that there are many older genins, who have practiced other careers before becoming ninja, and it is not frowned upon but seen as a normal part of life.

Different shinobi departments

Like every other village, Kumogakure has a genin-, chunin-, jonin- and anbu department. However, the hierarchies are drastically flatter than in, let's say, Kirigakure. There is a high degree of respect between the different ranks and ninja of lower ranks still look up to their team leaders, but there is a higher sense of equality among Kumogakure teams.

Ichigo feels so stupidly nervous watching Grimmjow's pack investigate his apartment. His apartment with the huge bath he never uses and the sunken living room-couch area and fuck, all his pillows and blankets are in the cupboards after the grueling wash they all needed last time his pack stayed over. Renji makes a mean cocktail but by god they stain.

He's going to look like he's trying too hard if he gets out the cushions now, isn't he.

At the start of this Manga it starts of as Mirai as a Genin chasing Cat at this time Kakashi is still hokage, this would have to take place before Boruto was 7 and after he was 5 meaning 5-7 but age of graduating Academy is 11 or 12 unless Mirai somehow graduated early so possibly at 9 turning 10 that year.

While Novel is different doesn’t show Mirai as a kid Genin and it takes place when Boruto is in academy it takes place after chapter 700 but because manga shows them as genin then it takes place after they graduate academy and not while there in academy, so the Novel version takes place after Chapter 700 and Before Naruto Gaiden The Seventh Hokage and Scarlet Spring.

So yeah I'm 39. I didn't bother watching Naruto in the 00s because it wasn't my jam. It still isn't, but eh, it never hurts to know some things.

I'd catch an episode here and there, but there are 220 and I figured given the monster of the week plot shows of the past, maybe I was missing a whole lot of content. But, upon an actual watch.. not really.

It has some environmental storytelling, but not too much for a children's show. It has a bold amount of violence and death. That's not a mark against it. I'm genuinely surprised this managed to clip passed the censors, as most studios would be told, "yeah we're not going to air this show about child bloodsport. it sets a bad precedent; think of the children!" But, it stands as a glowing example of the then difference between what you were allowed to produce for mainstream broadcasts in Japan vs. the no-fun police in the US.

But more than anything else, it focuses on a few specific events that drag over multiple episodes and are bookended by slice of life just to make the protagonists more rounded as people and not fighters in a fighting game.

I was expecting there to be more arcs and conflicts over the 100 someodd episodes I've watched, but honestly, given I've also watched Dragon Ball Z, and that can be summarized as, 'meet Raditz,' 'Meet Vegeta and Nappa', 'meet Frieza', 'Meet the Androids' 'Meet Cell', 'Meet Buu', that's surprisingly little over such a long period.

So far, Naruto has fought.... a dickhead nihilist in the leaf village, and was a one boy stompdown for it. Some bara dude wearing cowprint and his sad girl in the snow twink boyfriend. The Shinobi School System, that tries to educational murder him on a daily basis. Snaketwink von Hithhith. No-Sleep McSandvaginooki, and his gourd of fine granulated childhood trauma. His own ignorance and youthful inexperience with working ninja magic. And then Snaketwink von Hithhith and his nerdy pal Medschool Beetlejuice again.

And I'm up to episode 101. That's very close to halfway through the whole original run. If this were a J-RPG we would barely be out of the first two villages in Breath of Fire 2.

I'm pondering if it gets more intensely story twist and turn packed by episode 220, 'cause relatively speaking, it doesn't have much time left.

Oh. And also, I think I understand a little better what people are complaining about when they talk about Naruto Filler. From enjoying Akira Toriyama's silliness, I can appreciate slice of life and gags from my manga and anime. And uh, well... I think shonen fans are sometimes a humorless bunch. At the same time, some of these episodes feel more like they're extra long funny doodles in the ledgers of an old European monk's tomes. So, I can kind of get why they're seen as wasted episodes. That's a cruel way to think of them, but I guess when you're invested in the metaplot and characters, just using them as if bringing them out of a toybox to do stupid shit is seen as a waste of time.

I guess perhaps the creator wanted to create more content in the world using the world's rules to tell whimsical off-stories. The fanbase appears to've rejected this method of lateral and parallel worldbuilding, on account that these stories may as well not exist as anything but intermission. It's a subtle trick. To have the audience watch a slice-of-life thing that never gets referenced again, but you still accept is resolved and was part of their day-to-day life. These episodes and the narrative styes just make those bolts and seams extra visible and the fanbase can tell, on a fish and lizard brain level, reject them as superfluous. It's an interesting experience to witness. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it or picking it apart. I'unno.

Noble or Nefarious, some of gaming’s greatest Ninja warriors!

Ninja’s. the warriors of shadow. They lurk in the darkness before striking. Often armed with powers considered magical, or weapons that require great skill. These Ninja are no longer in the shadows, as they are taking the spotlight. As a rule for this list, no Ninja that originate from anime will be on this list, so namely, no Naruto characters. (Also, for anyone who does not know… Kunoichi means female ninja, keep that in mind.)

Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden) One of gaming’s most legendary Ninja. Ryu Hayabusa has gone on several death defining journeys. He has saved the world from men and demons alike. Armed with a wide assortment of weapons and ninjutsu, Ryu dispatches his foes with no mercy. Ryu does not fear death, nor does he hesitate in striking down his foes. In the ninja gaiden series, Ryu fight hundreds of brutal opponents, he utilizes acrobatics and masterful swordplay. In the Dead or Alive series, he relies on skillful hand to hand combat. When not in combat, Ryu is a Curio shop owner and is the love interest of a female American agent. Ryu has appeared in various other games either as a guest character or a cameo as well.

Joe Musashi (SHINOBI) Sega’s response to Ryu Hayabusa. Joe Musashi is one of the main characters of the SHINOBI series. A ninja from the Oboro clan. Joe is half American half Japanese and is quite the skilled warrior. Proficient at ninjutsu and shuriken throwing, Joe has fought evil since his early twenties. Joe is a righteous man who strives for world peace and has clashed with the evil terrorist syndicate Zeed on several occasions. He would eventually become the head of his clan and would continue defending the world from evil.

Scorpion & Sub Zero (Mortal Kombat) Scorpion and Sub-Zero, one of the most iconic rivalries in video games. The Sub-Zero we all know and love is the brother of the original Sub-Zero. Scorpion is a wrath obsessed with revenge and can rarely see past his own anger. Sub zero can control ice and can use it to freeze opponents solid while in battle. Sub-Zero is calm and calculated and is the leader of his own people. He tries his best to be a good leader but is not afraid to bust some heads while doing so. Scorpion is a fallen soul that was given a second chance to enact revenge. While the target of his revenge is Noob Sabot, he tends to target the current Sub-Zero. Scorpion is adept in his knife throwing and has decent manipulation over fire. Scorpion is undead and very angry, rarely listens to reason and tends to be the one who stats fights. In some cases, the two put aside their differences and work together, when that happens they become near unstoppable.

Grey Fox (Metal Gear Solid) Frank Jaeger, also known as Grey Fox is a mercenary turned vengeance fueled cybernetic ninja. Frank made an appearance in the first Metal Gear title as the infiltrator of outer haven, he was captured and rescued by Snake. He would disappear after the supposed Death of Big Boss. In Metal Gear 2 he reappears, this time as Snake’s enemy. Having sided with the real Big Boss, Fox tries to drive Snake away several times but ultimately fails. The two engage in a fist fight and Fox loses and supposedly dies. Later, in Metal Gear Solid, Fox returns in his famous cyborg ninja garb. A man obsessed with fighting Snake once more, he is a rogue card in the Shadow Moses incident. He eventually turns to Snake’s side and dies in the games finale. His death would carry a legacy that plays a large role in MGS4. As a cyborg ninja, Fox can render himself invisible and deflect bullets with his sword. He strongly prefers fighting hand to hand.

Kat and Ana (WarioWare) Not every Ninja is a shadowy warrior that leaves behind a trail of bodies. Kat and Ana are two young ninja in training. Their name is a pun on the word Katana. When they are not in school they are training to become professional ninja, but usually something silly happens in the process. Their microgames in the wario ware series vary from game to game, covering themes such as nature, ninjas and everyday life. They also appear as an assist trophy in the smash series.

Ibuki (Street Fighter) A young Kunoichi in training from the street fighter series. Despite her training, Ibuki acts like a normal teenage girl. She is not to fond of her training and finds it bothersome but takes it seriously nonetheless. She tends to sneak off and skip her duties to do her own thing. She desires to meet cool and handsome guys and will often judge her foes based on the way the look, act and dress. At some point she fights an immortal hermit named Oro, and even though she lost, it was considered her final test and she was granted a pass. She then went to university for ninjas.

Kaede (Onimusha) A ninja assassin who would dive headfirst into combat regardless of the risk. At some point in the past she was sent by an unknown benefactor to assassinate a mane named Samanosuke Akechi. She instead became his ally and eventual lover. The two would travel together over the next couple years. She plays a role in several Onimusha games, usually aiding her lover or searching for him when he went missing. Eventually she would fall in combat at the hands of Gargant. After her death, she is still remembered fondly by her widowed lover.

Rikimaru (Tenchu) A young master class Ninja assassin. Raised and trained by the man who killed his parents, Rikimaru was turned into a deadly warrior since an early age. Stoic and ever so serious, Rikimaru is loyal to Lord Gohda. He has helped quell rebellions and has fought off rival ninja clans to ensure Lord Gohda’s protection. A detached man, Rikimaru is very rarely influenced by emotions. He is skilled in many forms of combat and swordsmanship and is the current head of his clan.

Yuffie Kisaragi (Final Fantasy VII) A teenage kunoichi thief who desires to restore her homeland of Wutai. She is one of the secret characters of FFVII and makes her debut by trying to steal Cloud’s materia. A spunky, emotional girl, Yuffie can act quite childish at times. She tends to get on her allie’s nerves but can be a skilled comrade in battle. Yuffie fights with a giant shuriken. As the series goes on, Yuffie grows up and matures a bit but still has an immature demeanor at times. She also appears in Kingdom Hearts as one of Sora’s first allies.

Strider Hiryu (Strider) A master spy and an active Strider agent. Hiryu’s name, nationality and age are all top secret. The most info on him other than his appearance is that he was born in 2030. Hiryu is extremely skilled and collected in combat, often considered to be the top Strider agent to date. Being able to dodge bullets and defeat tons of enemies without showing fatigued, Hiryu is often the one who is left standing. Eventually the other Striders are whipped out, and he is the sole survivor. While he could easily flee, he chooses to fight. It is this bravery and tenacity to survive that make him an excellent Ninja.

Izuna (Legend of the Unemployed Ninja) A 16-year-old kunoichi who is down on her luck. Izuna and her clan were kicked out of their castle because their leader thought Ninja were obsolete. Stubborn and somewhat clumsy, she winds up accidently offending the gods and must go on a quest to set things right. Surprisingly enough, she is a gifted individual that can allow gods to leave their shrines and support her. While not the most skilled ninja on this list, she is a kunoichi nonetheless.

Shadow Man (Mega Man) A ninja robot master who originated from Mega Man 3. A skilled martial artist hwo loves to sneak up on people, Shadow man is surprisingly impulsive. He has a variety of attacks, such as creating a clone or using a smokescreen in battle. His weapon is the shadow blade and he is weak to the incredibly useful top kick. He reappears in several other games as well which further his ninja skills. Shadow man is possibly alien in origin as well.

Wonder White (Wonderful 101) A superhero and a ninja in training. Wonder White, known by his real name Momoe Byakkoin and his other super name, the claws of calamity, is one of the heroes of Wonderful 101. Armed with special weapons passed down from generation to generation, White is a speed oriented fighter. A man who enjoys long entrances and spouting philosophy, he can be somewhat of a nuisance. While calm and cooperative, Wonder White is very talkative… Not very fitting for a ninja.

Was re-reading Bridge-arc and it was by the time Sakura comes to sasuke with her lie of joining him in order to kill him.

So these are Sasuke words when she said she wants to join him

"Do you what i want to do?" "Are you really willing to betray the leaf for me?" to what she answers yes, and he asks her to prove it, before he says his ussual "Humph"

I saw a lot of SS using this pages as proof that Sasuke really wanted to believe Sakura, that his questions were actually genuine, specially when he asked her if she was willing to betray the leaf for him.

Also they use that he tells her she is a medical ninja, so how did he know about this?

So, what do you think of this takes? I always thought he never trusted her the very first moment she showed up there

I think only in SS fandom... Sasuke becomes a Fool, a Monster who likes to kill everyone but want to eyesmex with her, a Dominating Daddy and what not....

His questions were actually genuine, specially when he asked her if she was willing to betray the leaf for him. Sasuke really wanted to believe Sakura...

Oh Really??? 

If Sasuke truly believed Sakura, WHY IS HE ASKING SAKURA TO PROVE HERSELF??

The last time I checked, If Sasuke trusts someone completely, and if that ‘Someone’ hurts him in the worst way possible, still Sasuke would never ever believe that the person was really trying to hurt him... instead he would consider it as an Illusion.

It upsets me to bring these panels..

In order to make Sasuke hate him, Itachi showed the horrible truth through his Tsukuyomi.... And yet Sasuke couldn’t believe it. 

Honestly tell me, If only Itachi told him a “lie” that he didn’t do it.... Would Sasuke believed him??? 

Of course, Yes!!!! That’s the level of belief he had on itachi.

Whereas with Sakura....

It’s really funny... The very first question he asks her is, “What are you trying to pull?”

Trying to pull means ‘Deceive’ or ‘Cheat’ or ‘Trick’.... I wonder those people have basic English knowledge to understand the meaning of this word!!! 

It’s very evident that he didn’t believe her, the moment she started to spout these bullshit... Not one bit!!!!

If Sasuke truly believed her, he wouldn’t have asked her to prove it... Instead he would have gladly accepted her to be with him.... Instead all he did was going behind her back and tried to kill her because she was being pathetically dishonest which radiates 5 miles away from where she was standing....

There is no honesty from both the parties involved and yet they claim this scene as genuine??? 

Also they use that he tells her she is a medical ninja, so how did he know about this?

Ughhh!!! What are they trying to pull up with this claim??? That Sasuke was keeping tabs on Sakura’s details desperately and wanted to keep her by his side????. 

Are they fools??

Sasuke is not a fool.... He stayed with Orochimaru, A Scientist and Kabuto, A Doctor for 3 years..... Both of them have a history with Tsunade in their own ways. 

Tsunade was the first person in the Shinobi World who implemented this brilliant system of having one Medical Ninja in a 4 man Team. 

And that system has been followed by every generation in Konoha which was evident from Team Minato... Where Rin was also a Medical Ninja...

Well, not only this... Kabuto has also shown his excellent skills as a Doctor in Part 1 during Neji Vs Naruto Battle during Chunin Exams... 

And all these panels are from the chapter 101, 102...

So, this system is very much established in Narutoverse even before the official arrival of Tsunade (Chapter 149) into the Manga... That is, During Chunin Exams, Sasuke was also in the village....

According to their logic, Either Sasuke must be an ignorant fool to not know about the Shinobi System of his own Village or During his time with Orochimaru, Sasuke became an absolute idiot to not observe Kabuto’s Medical skills (Which he had learnt from Konoha) ... 

With all that being said,

Sasuke knew Naruto is a Jinchurikki and a person who creates Diversion in Team 7 and a combat oriented Shinobi.... So, He can’t be a Medical Ninja....

Kakashi.... He knew about his own Sensei... and his skills. 

Sai... is Sasuke’s replacement... And hence he can’t be a medical Ninja. 

That leaves only Sakura.... So, she must be the Medical Ninja.

It’s not a Rocket Science, you know!!!

100) Something to note: There are scrolls prepared to summon a human being (they probably work similarly to the typical summoning scrolls we’re used to later on), is this technique the exact same or differs? Is it used during battles? Wouldn't it be beneficial for Medic-Nin to be summoned on dangerous missions rather than being there all the time and potentially get hurt?

101) Of course there was a test inside another test (much like in the first stage), in this case, the applicants were evaluated on their capacity to -quoting Iruka, “demonstrate the ability to remain within a mission’s stated parameters.” Also meaning: not breaking the rules.

Kishimoto is quite good and consistent when constructing the universe of the manga and people doesn’t give him enough credit for it: it’s stated previously that the shinobi system is oppressive and treats ninja as mere tools, and despite presenting “nice” characters inside of it, the structure they move on is still repressive. Iruka saying this with a smile doesn’t change the fact that what is asked of them is to follow orders no matter what -not watching the scrolls (assuming they contain vital information) isn’t the actual end, they’re preparing them for more morally questionable commands.

102) Iruka points out the weakness of both Sakura (Earth=Body strength) and Naruto (Heaven=Mind/knowledge). Kishimoto drew Sasuke as the main character shown when Iruka refers to a person having both qualities.

103) Jin: One person or all people. The description of Chünin. Those who get promoted are people that demonstrate both qualities (Earth and Heaven) and who command new units (therefore, they’re responsible for each member of their teams).

104) Naruto doesn’t consider himself a student anymore -nor a child. I stated before that the first chapters make emphasis on the pass from childhood to adulthood through the headband (becoming gënin), here we are reminded of that fact through Naruto and Iruka’s exchange. Again, adulthood doesn’t have to do with age but rank.

105) Many shinobi don’t seem to know well enough who Orochimaru was -even despite him being one of the three legendary Sannin. Did Hiruzen bury all of Orochimaru’s information once he deflected? How come there’s a rumor he died? How come they didn't hunt him? Does Konoha possess an unit like Mist to hunt their rogues?

106) Hiruzen is already aware that Orochimaru came for Sasuke. If he was still communicating with Itachi it isn’t far-fetched to think Itachi told him about their fight and the reason for it. Another possible explanation could be because Hiruzen knew about Orochimaru’s interest, so he assumed that the Sharingan was something he wanted long ago. In any case, Hiruzen allows Orochimaru’s threat to rule over his politics: he continues the chünin exams at his request (even if Orochimaru hadn’t demanded it, there’s nothing that could point out Hiruzen would have canceled them, he’s more concerned about Konoha’s reputation as a militia than the wellbeing of its participants).

107) Hiruzen is actually surprised most rookie teams survived (not passed the test, but survived).

I’ll put this in the same point since we’re still on Hiruzen’s character:

The Chünin Exams -and their actual purpose:

This has been often referenced, so expanding on this will add little to the topic, yet not having it in some part of my analysis blog feels particularly näive, so here it is.

We had a notion about what the exams were about back in the introductions of the Sand Siblings, where Temari explains to Naruto the reason why they were in Konoha and were granted permits to stay within its borders. That conception was false -or rather, it masked the truth. As Hiruzen explains solely to those who reached the final stage of the exam (preliminary rounds), the idea of the exams isn’t to “promote friendship” -but to create a war-like scenario where each shinobi is tested. (x) The actual objective of the exam is to filter the candidates that aren’t remarkable enough to either survive or pass the exam in order to display only the best applicants of each village to the most important figures of the countries (x).

The reasoning behind it is quite easy: The better the candidates and the better the show they’re able to deliver to potential (and rich) customers; the more probabilities of getting more commissions (triumphs on one on one fights means that the most likely shinobi from that village will guarantee a successful mission). The more commissions, the more money; the more money, the more power (x) -and since this is only a mere demonstration of dominance (not only of the village, but the countries as a whole), they need to ensure the candidates will show their higher levels of strength, and for them to do so, the exams are designed to mirror a war -that is, extreme circumstances of life and death.

The “friendship” that Hiruzen often speaks about (and many fans still take in the strict term of the word), is more about preserving the balance between the villages at the risk of people’s life. That’s the type of friendship that Naruto will end up defending -to keep the balance in between the greater villages, massacres, discrimination, and even wars (and war-like scenarios, such as the Chünin Exams), are permitted.

In the same manner, not only the shinobi are defending the balance between nations -but also, the honor of their clan/village. It’s no surprise then that Kakashi is so insistent on tying the Uchiha’s honor to Sasuke’s name.

108) Orochimaru is literally standing next to Anko, Hiruzen, Kakashi, and many jönin and none of them are able to notice his presence -the INCOMPETENCE.

109) Anko is the only one concerned about Sasuke’s wellbeing (Kakashi says Sasuke will be mad to stop the matter, so great tutoring you fucking twat), and Hiruzen is more concerned about Orochimaru’s words. Keep in mind that they all know about the Cursed Mark and what it can do -yet, displaying their forces is better than protecting the last remaining Uchiha (Itachi’s trust in them protecting Sasuke is so pathetic).

110) Hayate’s words: “this is no-holds-barred combat. Each pair of combatants until one of them is dead or unconscious… or admits defeat.” Further proving that Hinata was saved because of her status: She wasn’t unconscious, she refused to forfeit despite Neji telling her to do so and stopping mid-fight to allow her to do it (Naruto actually encouraged her to keep going even tho she was clearly close to dying), and she wasn’t dead. Neji was never out of line and continued the fight according to the rules introduced by no other than the proctor -and the quantity of jönin that jumped to save Hinata is another indication of her privileged position, she deserves no sympathy in that stage. It was her conscious decision to continue the fight.

It is true that he states that there are some cases where he will intercede before that happens, but “they shouldn’t count on that.” He didn’t intervene when Lee fought Gaara -just with Hinata, thus, she’s privileged.

111) Naruto sees how concerned Sakura is for Sasuke and because he doesn’t want him to lose (so they can finally fight), he yells at Sasuke and ties his performance to his clan. If I ever see Naruto speaking of the Uchiha clan again I SWEAR TO GOD--

112) Sasuke mastered Lee’s technique while also being able to control the Curse Mark in the span of a freaking fight. Earth and Heaven. Guy explains that Sasuke’s feat is remarkable.

113) I stated this before, seals and/or Cursed Marks can be counter-sealed. This is one example. No reason why the Caged-Bird Seal couldn’t be, as well.

114) Kakashi literally insulting Sasuke for fainting after he sealed the cursed mark WHAT--

116) The Aburame clan seem to also have a big pool of chakra from which the Kikaichus feed off. Shino’s strategy is rather great as well.

117) According to Kakashi, Sakura surpassed even Sasuke at circulating chakra through her body and deploying it with precise timing.

118) Ino should have won. Her strategy and acting were flawless -narrative likes to intercede to give Sakura an advantage she did nothing to deserve.
