I absolutely loved the Netflix show "Bodies" and can't wait to read the graphic novel. Si Spencer also wrote Hellblazer's "City of Demons" which I love, so I have high hopes.
I’ve not noticed any publicity for Bodies following the casting, and whether that’s mine own fault or lack of effort by Netflix, I can’t say. What I can say is this unheralded series is brilliant and fully deserves the great audience numbers it pulled on launch (it topped the Netflix Top 10 on first full week of release).
Bodies — what’s it about?
There’s a decent guide to this time travel…
The Vinyl Underground #1-6, December 2007-May 2008, written by Si Spencer, art by Simon Gane (pencils) and Cameron Stewart (inks), colors by Guy Major, covers by Sean Phillips
Kyle Soller, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Amaka Okafor, and Shira Haas in Bodies (2023) 'You're Dead Already'
Ep1
The same body appears in four different time periods - 1890, 1941, 2023, and 2053 - and four detectives attempt to solve the case in their respective eras. However, it quickly becomes clear that the mystery extends further than each of them thought.
*The placard dedicated to Si Spencer at the end of the first episode is for the author who wrote the comics that the series is based on. He died at the age of 59 on February 16, 2021
First off, the set-up is fantastic. Four murders in four very different times with only one corpse. Secondly, the approach of having a different artist for each of the periods was amazing. Sadly, neither of those things ever really pay off. Si Spencer's narrative is so overblown and only ever runs in circles, delivering a sci-fi heavy build-up that just never pays out in a satisfying manner, leaving us instead with overly ambiguous ideas and a completely forgettable climax. (Seriously, I read it last night, can't for the life of me remember that last dozen pages, or so.) And the artwork never feels stylistically unique enough between periods.
I read this graphic novel because Netflix released an adaptation (& because I've been meaning to read more graphic novels in general). I wasn't familiar with the story or the writer aside from the trailers for the show. I really wasn't prepared for what I was getting myself into. I should've just skipped this book and only watched the show.
