Terrible peek into the nitty gritty of writing a hockey au: Trying to figure out what nickname a player would end up with.

Because, like, the naming conventions are arbitrary and weird but also there ARE rules.

1. First initial last initial. In Tommy's case, that'd make him a TK, which in this scenario could be confusing? I don't have any specific plans to include Lone Star characters but I know some people watch LS so that one doesn't make sense.

2. First name nickname - You got your Nate's, your Sids, etc. Tommy's already a nickname. Is that just a leftover from his years in hockey? Did he get that nickname in juniors and it just stuck? Possible.

3. Choosing a random section of the last name and adding the ē sound to the end ie Landy, Ovi, Bedsy. Marchy, etc. This would include possibilities like Kinny (no), Nardi (???) Kinsey (just sounds like a different last name)

4. First initial partial last name: TKin, which... No

5. Random (usually animal) word and or animal/name portmanteau: Moose, Squirrel, (Ratthew is a fave of mine) - if I'm pulling from canon he could be The Beast but 🤷‍♀️

6. Something unconventional that a broadcaster probably came up with, or sprung out of some Strange Event (Chimney fits this fucking perfectly) My fave example of this is Conor Magahey calling Kurtis MacDermid "Chrysler Town and Country" but MacDermid already has "Dermy" which is fun and cool. Did a broadcaster call Tommy a "Ch-53e Super Stallion" at some point and that shortened it to Super Stallion, and then Stallion, at some point? (Not a terrible possibility)

And like, what do I do for Eddie. He's anti-nickname canonically but the fanbase always has a nickname anyway, at some point.

sorry, sorry, to get back to your actual question. yes i’ve read iBear. was very into iBear for a while. it’s a fun fic. it’s definitely been a while since i’ve read it, wasn’t on my mind when the topic came up in my asks, but it’s very fitting for the recent masc kink discussions on this blog for sure (the characterisations aren’t really my jam any more, but tbf that was in the spacetoaster era of sidgeno). my iBear favourites were actually The State of Marriage and I Like The Way I Smell On You, (aside from a very specific one which was orphaned, iykyk, i’ve just been around long enough to remember when it wasn’t. lol), which i recommend reading if you haven’t yet and you’re in the process of reading your way through their catalogue

Oh yeah we all had to take care of an egg as part of our fifth grade sex ed class. Fun fact: they were all dyed easter eggs to make sure no one would replace theirs and cheat if they dropped it. We had to write down what color our eggs were and draw a picture and turn it into the teacher before we left class (shout out to the dumb jock who dropped his egg accidentally on the way out of class)

While we're on the topic, if this happened in the NHL, which pairing(s) do you think would ace the activity and which do you think would somehow drop it in the first five seconds?

sid and geno - sid would be meticulous about it because he was going to win at being an egg mom, and while geno wouldn’t really care about the project he would care about sid’s opinion of him so he’d play along. A+

tanger and flower - tanger drops it almost immediately and flower has to make a spectacular save to keep it from hitting the ground, but he grabs it too hard so it breaks anyway. to this day they’re still arguing about whose fault it is. they stay up all night trying to dye another egg to match and they get close enough that the teacher knows it’s a fake but can’t prove it. B-

matthew and leon - the eggs survive but they do not. rip they would have made great parents. N/A not graded

(as usual as soon as a question is posed my brain is wiped clean, i can’t think of any more pairings i have an opinion about except tk/patty which 1) we know they fail immediately, and 2) were just gonna move on from that guy.)

When did you make this account? Was it during s4 cause it remember that’s when I started seeing you. Sid you decide to make it cause everyone was just so ok with the iris thing and you just couldn’t take it.. (cause same)

I started this account March this year.

(Interesting enough I do have another account, but I never posted anything on it)

To be honest I was really nervous in the beginning, I knew a lot of people in the fandom wouldn't like me. What made me start this was pure frustration. I really tried to forget that storyline, to pretend it never happened. I didn't want to be angry at Carlos – no one likes to feel anger, it’s an awful feeling. But it didn't go away and I needed to vent.

The fact that TK interactions with Iris were labeled as funny and amusing is something that I will never get over with. I don’t think enough people in the fandom understand how dangerous that was – I don’t think enough people in the fandom get how often people with addiction deals with self-worth issues, sense of being inadequate and guilty. The things she said could have made so much damage.

And to made someone that deals with addiction to feel like they have to be approved by another person (a stranger, no less) in order to have their relationship with their significant other to be accepted is in such poor taste.

Carlos clearly blaming TK for her disappearance and act with that level of hostility? That was just another level of terrible. That could be the nail in the coffin. Yet there was no talking about it. No apologies, nada.

In the end I truly regret having watched this show.

i hope you don't mind me asking — but how / why did you pick the teams you cheer for currently? i just realized we don't have favorite teams in common but i love your energy and all of your poetry posts so much 🫶

oh so the penguins just happened to be the first team i found when i googled “hockey” but the bruins were an accident and also a mistake.

i don’t entirely know why i like the teams i like. i think i just tend to pick one character or dynamic i find interesting and follow that down a rabbit hole. i got into hockey after watching the pens 2009 cup documentary

(big strong manly dudes who talk about sports like it’s war and celebrate hard hits, playing through injuries, and getting into fights, who also nicknamed their little goalie friend Flower and made sure to give him forehead kisses after every game. i didn’t stand a chance)

so sid, geno, tanger, (talbot), and most of all flOWER were my first loves and ive kinda just stuck with them ever since.

at one point i tried to put together a spreadsheet to figure out which other teams to root for (based on their names, logos, place in the standings, nr of scandinavians etc). i immediately eliminated all the red white and blue teams because i thought the colour combination was unimaginative, then eliminated all the teams whose logo was just a letter because i thought that was stupid, then forgot all about the spreadsheet because a bruins fan was nice to me and i decided to root for her team just because i liked her vibe.

(dragged one friend down the marcheron rabbit hole with me and we watched game 7 together and i will truly genuinely never stop feeling guilty about putting her through all that. then bergy retiring broke me unfixable etc etc and now we’re here)

minnesota kinda became my team a few months ago, mainly because flower plays there, but also because i got to watch them play in stockholm and that was v exciting for me. the wild have been getting most of my attention lately because that’s the fandom where i have the most fun. whereas the goalies and the superstars tend to suck up most of the oxygen in other fandoms, wildblr for some reason tends to focus on the fourth liners and the losers and that’s more my vibe just in general.

hockey is only really an internet hobby for me, and none of my Real Life Friends really care about it, so i need some fandom friends to yell about these things with. im also several timezones behind and i catch most games a few hours after the fact, so if i have to scroll through a lb of a fandom that’s very negative i tend to just blacklist that tag. there’s a few teams i now see very little of & don’t massively care about for that reason.

this turned into a much longer reply than i intended but also i just really liked the question & you worded it real kind so i didn’t want to half ass it.

there’s other players i still like even though i don’t keep up w the team much (eichel, natemac, that little slutty guy from montreal, bertuzzi, tk, ej, etc etc) but there’s only so many hours in a day, you know?
