an angle that i can't remember anybody pointing out abt Gideon re: christ allegory is the idea of Wake as Mary conscious of what her role entails. Mary conscious of and accepting of the sacrifice her child will be used for.
she's visited by one of god's lyctor's – directly contacted by Mercymorn with an opportunity – and outside her interactions w G1deon, she's the only one of them Wake ever meets. in the bible, the angel who visits Mary is the same angel that directs the wise men to seek Mary and Jesus out in Jerusalem, which adds a more sinister parallel to Mercy being the one to direct G1deon to Wake's location over the Ninth.
Wake has no direct interaction with John/God until after she’s already dead, and therefore Gideon’s conception is, like Mary’s conception of Jesus, almost completely separate from God at all, except that the resulting child will be his biologically (or spiritually in Jesus’ case).
she takes a literal journey while heavily pregnant to reach the Ninth, and has to give birth in less than ideal conditions and surroundings. and the story diverges further from there, because instead of being visited and given gifts for her child’s birth, she’s attacked, betrayed, and murdered before she can complete the mission she did any of this for.
(one could argue that G1deon and Pyrrha’s role in this allegory is both that of the wise men (keeping up three separate identities = three wise men right? g1deon, pyrrha, and the Saint of Duty all visited on her in one form. much to think on) – but also of Joseph (especially given Pyrrha tells John in HTN that she didn't tell him abt Wake's pregnancy because she assumed the child was hers, and upon finding out Gideon isn't hers, she's obviously conflicted abt it, but inevitably settles on wanting to be a parent/parental figure to her despite the truth and the complexities of Wake's actions) but that’s just a whole Can of Worms, because we know very little of what actually went down during their interaction leading up to the airlock, so we’ll just let the concept lie there for the moment.)
Wake conceives, carries, and gives birth to Gideon, the distanced but biological child of God, knowing she’ll be used as a sacrifice, knowing through trial and error that the only viable method for this plan to work is through carrying the child herself. she does it all under the faith that if she does it all correctly, if she works hard enough, toughs it out, it will all be worth it. arguably, she never sees the Tomb fully opened, but she sees it breached.
another fun tidbit from this train of thought is the idea that her niece is named Our Lady of the Passion, a tangential name for the Virgin Mary in some sects of catholicism. beyond death, Wake’s belief in her mission to rid the universe of John and the Houses, her passion, as it were, is once again present in Pash, who is not exactly present when the Tomb is opened, but is around and conscious enough of her connections and roles to realise her dang cousin is also hanging around on the same planet her aunt died on. excited to see whatever dynamic she and Gideon develop in atn, Muir willing.

The Angel & Their Lover 🕊️
Angel x Human
The window opened again that night. A soft breeze trickled in and pushed past the curtains onto the sheets. The darkest nights were always the loneliest, at least, to an Angel.
They don't remember when it started, but this nightly routine of visiting their unknowing lover became a habit. It was a human like no other they'd ever witnessed. A human with features so pleasing to the eyes and so gentle to their peers, they had never expected to see such a kind-hearted soul. It wasn't an instant magnetic attraction, but the Angel grew curious about this human's strange hobbies over time.
The Angel couldn't stop staring, whether it was the flick of their hair or the bite of their lip. Unlike most people, they spoke in a tone they'd never heard of before. It was so relaxing, yet so fitting and beautiful they couldn't quite put their finger on it, yet it drew them closer. So, they studied them carefully, analyzing everything humans did daily.
They were surprised to conclude that in their passion for looking further into this human, they had also fallen in love with them.
That revelation left them feeling something warm in their chest, a sensation they couldn't describe at first, but now all the winged being could do was follow their dearest in all the places they possibly could since physically being with them wasn't possible.
Was an angel even supposed to feel this way? This bright smile couldn't be controlled while they tenderly admired their lover closely, watching them work as their Angel hummed a whisper of a song, hoping that their human could hear them calling.
These daily ventures out to see them repeatedly left them with no answers. Yet, they persisted and stayed.
~~~
The sun sets earlier than usual in the winter season. Today, the Angel watched their precious lover work tirelessly throughout the day. They didn't wear gloves while walking outside for some reason, which worried them more when they noticed how the Human's hands reacted to the cold. It shook slightly, only a bit, but nothing more than that.
Their ghostly fingers leaned into their lover's. It would only slip through them, but imagining their fingers intertwined wasn't so bad.
As the light began to reflect from the snow and their warm breath collided with the fresh cool winter air, the Human thought they spotted a twinkle from the corner of their eye. They paused momentarily and turned to see nothing but the endless white sea of frost.
The Angel, on the other hand, couldn't believe it. Just now, it almost felt as if their lover had sensed their presence because their eyes had met in this split second. It was only for a brief moment, but it captivated Angel.
There was a goal here, wasn't there? Something they were pursuing, and they couldn't let them get away. They had to figure out how to communicate with them immediately. There had to be a way. So, Angel had finally put it together and found a solution, even if it turned out to be temporary. They were thrilled when they discovered that angels could appear in a human form for a short time, during a particular time of day.
Angel settled down their heart as they prepared the items sprawled across the ground of an open area in a field. Angel waited patiently for the time set and the moon's light to reach them. They were eager to feel the transformation overtake their body as they held their hands up in prayer.
A soft glow penetrated through the night clouds and down to their figure. Angel felt a strange tingling in their body as the light cascaded evenly around them. It was a soft and delightful switch from their spiritual form to their mortal body and an exciting experience.
A grin began to spread across their face as the thoughts of their lover took over their mind once again.
A whistle in the wind pushed them into opening their eyes and waking up the following day on that same frosty field they had performed their ritual.
Angel couldn't remember the events of last night, but a shadowy figure leaned down towards them.
Angel cracked their eyes open just a bit and was astonished to see that their Human had found them in such a dishevelled state. They quickly sat up and dusted off their clothes. They were dressed in light clothing that imitated the snow in colour, so the simple fact that their lover could so easily spot them was surprising enough.
The Human chuckled softly and lent a hand. "What's a sweet thing like you doing out here in the cold?"
Angel's cheeks began to burn again; all they could muster was a quick apology while trying to fix themselves.
When Angel got up and surveyed their landscape, they noticed it. How strange their Human's eyes appeared to be, the apparent look of knowing their smirk gave off and that aura of darkness and comfort drew them in.
Their Human was a Demon.
"You're-" Angel stopped to catch their breath. They couldn't believe their love and admiration for them had thrown off their sense of identifying a Demon.
"I'm a demon; I've noticed you have a knack for following the things you like, huh?" Their eyes sparkled with a hint of curiosity and intrigue. Angel blushed at their secret being revealed, but they felt a lightweight on their chest even more.
"I suppose you're going to tease me for this."
Demon rolled their eyes, "well, it's in my nature, but to tell you the truth, I loved having you as my lovely little stalker."
Angel took a deep breath and shook their head, "then why did you ignore me?" Angel was embarrassed; this was a mistake.
Their dearest looked over at them with another one of their unmistakable signature smiles. A soft and reassuring squeeze held tightly onto their frost-bitten hand.
"Why would I want to rob you of all that fun?"
