writeblr intro!

Well, hello there! Welcome to my page! Thought I'd finally get around to writing and pinning an intro, seeing as my writeblr recommendations post has gone STRATOSPHERIC and I've followed so many new accounts!

I'm Jeb (he/him), 21 years old, and an aspiring writer, poet and disaster dork from New Zealand (who currently lives in the UK - England, to be more precise). I'm a huge lover of writing and reading science fiction works, particularly hard sci-fi - Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series and his novel The Songs of Distant Earth were the works that inspired a young me to start taking writing seriously. I also write fanfiction, romance, horror, a smidgen of fantasy, spy fiction... whatever takes my fancy, basically! I also love writing and reading poetry, and hope to have some of my poems published professionally by the end of 2023!

Outside of writing, I'm a huge motorsport lover. Formula One is my main passion, and in fact I originally joined tumblr to post about my then-WIP, The Edge Of Control. TEOC may be in cryogenic storage, but my love of speed and high-octane racing remains: I regularly watch F1, IndyCar and the World Endurance Championship. I also love spaceflight, astronomy, Shakespeare, teen movies from the 80s/90s (ESPECIALLY John Hughes' work), many cheesy romcoms and lasagna. (What? It's literally the perfect food!)

Right, now with all that out of the way, let's get onto the real good stuff... (sorry in advance for the lack of taglists, I haven't remembered how they work!)

Are there pets in your world? Which ones are popular, and which would be considered rare or eclectic?

There are most certainly pets in the setting! Of course there's your typical dog or cat or other kinds of pets people in our world may have. And since it's a fantasy world and not real, I will say that there are some people with pet foxes, weasels, and other creatures that are extremely unsuitable to be kept as pets in the real world. Though I'd imagine these people are people closer to nature through magic. Maybe packs of lycanthropes would keep wild canids as pets! And I almost forgot, but one of the vampires (who we don't meet until book 2) has a few pet bats that he adores. His name is either Nikodemos or Nicodemus--I haven't fully committed to the spelling yet, but the first would be his birth name either way and he may or may not choose to spell it like the second.

There's also another vampire who has pets! Aramour of the Night Terrors raises chickens and likes to go into town and sell eggs and sometimes the chickens themselves. There's a little chicken coop outside the lighthouse the clan lives in.

There's a kind of pet that Ren would love more than anything else, but I shan't say what it is because I still have my two truths and a lie for him running >:3

There have definitely been attempts to keep more mythical creatures as pets, but it's ill-advised.

The giddy headrush and hot flushes are perfect, thank you! He does get butterflies but I kind of allude to that later on (in a very indirect way) so I was looking for something a bit different for his original reaction to the message.

I need description help. How would you describe the feeling you get when someone you reeeeeally like texts you? I'm looking for something more visceral rather than "butterflies in stomach" or similar, because my character would not describe it that way (especially because he is still somewhat in denial about his feelings for this person).

Lol I'm a little late as per usual XD. 2024 was a fucking year and 2025 will also be a fucking year. Thank you to all the peeps that made it a little bit better! Sitting in the hurt seems like the only plausible course of action, but then there’s that passing idea that only forms when the anger turns into puppet strings. He’s staring at the blink line on the search bar, and it’s calling him, begging him to remember that home isn’t here.  “I needed to run for as far as my legs would take me,” imaginary Seb is understanding, calm and if anything he should be a voice of reason, “To anywhere that wouldn’t have ruthlessness waiting for me. You need to make peace with not really ever having a place to belong—since you know you belong in the car, on the circuits that you’re supposed to win over. But you don’t get to do that anymore, Daniel. All you are is skin and bone now.” Daniel can’t will himself to cry, despite the white hot need to do so. He’s staring at the open tab on his screen; it’s a photo of the sprawling expanse of mid-western nothingness, swirls of red desert and endless fields of vibrant green. If he can’t find understanding here, in the hollow walls of a hollow city, then he’d need to heed Sebastian's advice—to run. As far as his legs would take him, until he could make his existence more than just another tale of failure.

To be entirely fair, I never write a theme in mind. I pick some characters, find out what makes them tick, then come up with a story from there. That said, here are the themes I've found along the way.

Current hyperfixation (changed from obsession because I don't use that language for myself): I don't currently have one, but if I am very good and very, very careful, I might just be able to coax myself into hyperfixating on my papers that are due. I have been trying for a while now and I a getting close! I can feel it!

Last song: I was singing along to Tiny Dancer in the car.

Fav colour: still green. Specifically green like the underside of a maple leaf when the sun shines through. Though I also have a special place in my heart for literally any non-standard colour the sky turns (lavender, true purple, orange, gold, pink, azure, teal, lightning storm grey, snow-glow grey, that overcast white that is just a little too bright and so on...)

Sweet/spicy/savory?: I do like my sweets, but I always half the sugar. Every now and then I like a little spice but I am white and weak. (I did once eat for entire packets of admittedly weak wasabi to try to clear my nose during allergy season. It did work.) I love savory herbs and spices too, but in moderation. Migraines, ya know?

Relationship status: I need a boyfriend so bad. Please.

Last thing I googled: Festooned. To make sure it meant exactly what I thought it meant.

AASOAF

Mariel: 7/10 Mariel grew up on a farm so she's pretty used to seeing creepy crawlies around. That said she can't keep her cool around them like she can with rodents and other types of pests so she is definitely the sort to be startled by one, and call for help if there is someone nearby. Otherwise, our little lady is bucking up and dealing with it on her own.

Axtapor: 10/10 A big part of Lizardfolk diet is eating bugs including roaches. While they aren't his favorite, he's known to indulge from time to time because the wings have a nice crunch to them *chefs kiss*. So he just manhandles them whenever they're around and down the hatch they go!

Fay: 0/10 Fay grew up impoverished in the slums of a place called Saltend and on more than one occasion discovered roaches in her bed, clothes, food, hair, blankets you name it. Safe to say she was traumatized after being surrounded by them for so many years. She is definitely calling in for backup if she sees one.

Wilkes: 10/10 Even though he's a Lizardfolk, he doesn't eat roaches. Rather, he despises them because Fay hates them so he's become quite the exterminator on her behalf. He can hit one from across the room with a throwing knife and has done so on many occasions. I should add, that he also doesn't let his adoptive parents eat them either. The Sikthax-Seymour household is a roach-free zone 😤

M.O.W

Hartim and Lexlar: 20/10 So these two are from The Oasis Heartlands which is mostly jungle ergo, LOTS of bugs to eat. They hunt bugs for fun and roaches are no different but they are a little bit more sadistic with roaches than other creepy crawlies. Lexlar will catch a bunch, enough to fill a jar, and then set them loose in an enclosed area, like a room for example, and let Hartim just go nuts trying to catch and eat them lol. Then the same thing vice-versa, Hartim will catch a bunch and release them for Lexlar. They claim it's a speed trial but they're really just playing with their food lol.

Happy New Year!!

Holy shit. 2023 was a hell of a year. Almost done with my undergrad degree. Thesis research started. Stories created. My largest story sort of dropped.I've gotten back into the swing of writing fanfic. My notebook is almost full again which is wild cause I felt like I didn't write much last year. Gender getting explored (After doing my damnest to ignore the hell out of it. Repression isn't good kids don't be like me.) Silly goofy times with my friends up here and in person. Last year I plastered some doodles and tagged a bunch of people that followed me through. Some of those people are gone now but I hope they're doing well! I started this year drunk as fuck and surrounded by cool people. I also started this year puking up my guts and falling asleep beside my best friend watching Bottoms. (Lol and continued it puking up my guts it's unfortunate.) So let's get this fucking year going!! And may any fuck that dragged you down in 2023 rot.
