Omg I don't know how I never noticed this but after seeing your diasomnia baton post I realised that I absolutely despise their dorm uniform pants

I used to think that they diasomnia students had drip but I take that back

It just feels wrong to have such baggy pants with the top of the uniform

To be fair, we mainly see the upper half of every character so it’s easy to forget what the bottom half looks like. I’ve found that the characters’ shoes are often really wonky (like the weird elf shoes in Broomquet cards) 😭

As for Diasomnia’s pants… I actually don’t take an issue with them at all. Those pants make a lot of sense given the inspiration for the dorm (which Yana has stated in an 2020 interview to be “bodyguards and dragons”). Diasomnia is meant to look militant—and that style of pants, from what I understand, are popular in military uniforms of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These flared breeches have roots in equestrian fashion, as polo and horse riding were activities favored among army officials, particularly the cavalry. (Note that half of the main cast in Diasomnia, Silver and Sebek, are in Equestrian Club.)

This style of pants is called jodhpurs. Diasomnia’s are more specifically an “old” design (shown above). They may look a little silly, but jodhpurs were considered quite fashionable back in the day. Additionally, the design was very functional for equestrians. Having a looser fit around the thighs allows for more freedom of movement—which is necessary for certain horseback maneuvers and helps with staying on and controlling the horse. The entire leg needs to be covered in fabric in order to protect from friction.

Prior to the development of riding breeches, equestrians would wear tall boots. The drawbacks to this were that 1) the boots were expensive as heck, and 2) the boots were complicated to put on and oftentimes required the help of a servant. When jodhpurs came onto the scene, these problems were resolved. Being entirely made of a non-stretchy fabric, they were much cheaper to produce than the riding boots. The lower part of the breeches is tight and form fitting, making it ideal to pair with short boots (which are easier to put on/take off by yourself).

Modern day or “new” jodhpurs look more like this (pictured above). As you can see, they’re much more slim and have transitioned into a stretchy fabric that still allows for movement. They basically do the same thing as the older iteration, they just look different and are made with a different material!

You’re probably thinking the “old” breeches look weird because you’re much more used to seeing the “new” style! Personally, I think the “old” style makes more sense for Diasomnia’s draconian aesthetic.

Aaand here’s my current personal ranking of the dorm uniforms. (I think I gave my thoughts on them a long time ago, but my opinions may have changed since then.) This is based solely on looks but does NOT account for dorm leader variants (just the standard dorm uniforms mobs wear)!

Heartslabyul — Whimsical, fun. Somehow both casual (sneakers, white T-shirt) yet also formal (vest). I’m a sucker for the Alice in Wonderland aesthetic and asymmetry in designs so this is really my bias speaking.

Pomefiore — So pretty!! Interestingly based on a kimono despite Pomefiore being based on a European tale. Very unique direction to take this uniform. The sleeves are the best part; they remind me of really fancy curtains and I bet they’re fun to watch swishing around.

Octavinelle — Can’t go wrong with a cool and simple suit! It’s elegant… a classic. No complaints other than maybe it’s too “traditional” looking compared to other designs.

Diasomnia — Cool at a glance, but also seems like a nightmare the longer I look at it because of all the straps. It looks like you would be standing very stiffly once it is on, so I get this sense of discomfort and feel bad for the students wearing it. There’s a weird… spiked strip running down the back, which makes it impractical to recline against a chair/couch or a wall. RIP Silver every time he naps 😭 Still giving this a pass because I think it fits the intimidating vibes of Diasomnia so well.

Ignihyde — Nothing to remark on other than it’s one of the least fussy of the designs (though it lacks the class of Octavinelle’s). That works against Ignihyde; the main thing that grabs my eye is the weirdly blocky jacket and that’s not enough to keep me interested when I find the blocky jacket really ugly. There is nothing else for me to look at.

Savanaclaw — Exposed arms… That’s a nope for me 💀 Biker cowboy aesthetic is also a big nope. Colors on this are so odd; the shirt and jewelry are so earthy and then BOOM you got this bright ass yellow sash at the waist.

Scarabia — Exposed arms (again). Also not a fan of the saggy hotpants or the shoes that expose the feet. Y’all are in the DESERT. Exposed skin = more sunscreen and bug spray application needed to protect yourselves. Sounds like a pain…

So like, world's tiniest violent here. But my baby brother bought me a nice pink polo shirt in XL. I don't normally wear pink, but I do frequently wear polo shirts in XL. Unfortunately, this polo shirt is from the lemon yoga pant store, which means that it is:

made the thinnest material imaginable;

missing the little split on the sides at the bottom of the shirt that prevent it from hugging me at the sides; and

"slim fit"

Add in the fact that I weigh 250 lbs at 5'6" to get a shirt that s t r e t c h e s over my gut and makes it so that you can see my belly button.

On the physical cost of teaching

Kind of a journal entry/mild rant, content note: body image stuff

Let me begin by saying that I feel incredibly lucky to have scored a pretty good teaching job at a private high school that lets me (somewhat) live out of my dark academia literature teacher fantasy. I have a good rapport with just about all of my students, I feel good about how year two is wrapping up, and I feel like I have genuinely made a difference in some kids' lives.

But goodness, teaching can really take a physical toll. Between six grueling years earning my M.A. and Ph.D., going on the job market, moving twice, and now teaching for two years, I feel it in my bones. I was sorting through old files on a soon-to-be retired laptop the other day, and I found some selfies from my first year of grad school. God, I looked so much better then. Sharper cheekbones and a leaner frame. I looked damn good in a small slim-fit dress shirt and some well-tailored pants. I slammed the laptop shut and felt like I was going to cry.

I've had to replace all of my clothes. I wear a regular fit medium now, and my pants are all 2 inches bigger at the waist. I had to buy new belts. New undershirts. New t-shirts. New polo shirts. New shorts, also 2" bigger at the waist. Before grad school, I worked a somewhat physically intensive job and then went to the gym 5x/week, so I was in exceptional shape. I tried my best to keep that up during grad school, but as my (then-undiagnosed) anxiety disorder worsened and I was absolutely crushed by the workload, I simply did not have the time or energy to keep up my previous level of physical activity. Then COVID. Then the dissertation. Then moving. Then moving again.

I miss feeling capable and strong. I am at a school that prides itself on its competitive athletics programs, and I am constantly surrounded by athletes. Maybe two or three of my 48 students don't have the physiques of gym rats.

I haven't been able to figure out what to do with these feelings, but I have decided to take the summer off to care for myself. I want to feel in touch with my body again. I want to get outside more. I want to honor what I have done but acknowledge that continuing on this path is unsustainable. The notion that teaching is a calling and demands self-sacrifice is a toxic one. I want to want to spend this summer fighting back against what that idea has done to me.

Strip:

He’s as tall as a mountain, about 189 cm, when Lyn steps up to him, her face is against his chest. Well he’s a BIG BOY.

He’s slim, but that doesn't stop him from having nice muscles. Just because he was a racer, he had to be fit and had to exercise a lot, so his muscles are pretty visible. Mostly on his legs and stomach. Lyn just adores it.

His foot size is 43.

He has longer light brown nearly red colored hair and he has a mustache and almost invisible beard on his chin. Of course, he has a few gray hairs, but Lynda finds it sexy.

Dress style: usually he wears a shirt and pants, sometimes a t-shirt and jeans. In winter, he wears sweaters and turtlenecks and coats a lot. Of course, he wears DINOCO clothes like a polo shirt, jacket, etc. He wears a cowboy hat and boots (but he also wears sneakers sometimes). He's a COWBOY after all.

Lynda:

She’s small and slender. She is about 169 cm, so she is quite small compared to Strip and Cal.

She is also slim, but of course she has those feminine shapes like nice hips, thighs, breasts, etc. She’s simply a piece of woman as Strip would say. She also has developed muscles but it is not so visible.

Her foot size is 39.

She has medium length highlighted hair and it is a bit wavy.

She wears natural makeup, she doesn't wear artificial nails, she has her long natural nails.

Dress style: usually she wears shirts and pants or skirts (only long skirts (only has a short one for Strip)) rarely she wears dresses (for example on a date). In winter she wears sweaters, turtlenecks and coats etc. She also wears a hat and cowboy boots. As accessories, she wears smaller handbags and jewelry.

CAL:

He’s also tall, around 185 cm but still not as tall as Strip.

He’s slim figure and also has visible muscles. He loves working out.

stature: What's your OC's body type? How tall are they? Do they wear clothing to accentuate their look or do they try to mask it?

172cm, mesomorph, shaped like an inverted triangle, muscular without being bulky. He has a V-shape, with visible muscles because of his bone-dry body, while remaining fairly slim. His muscles are noticeable under his well-tailored suits and slim-fitting shirts, with suit waistcoats accentuating them more. But as he wears black every day, it remains subtle. It's obvious when he's standing from the back, well cut, the jacket drawing the V to perfection. When he drops shirt for Arasaka's polo shirt, chosen as close to the body as possible to avoid creases, there's no mistaking his lean musculature. His organic arm is exposed, muscular, with visible veins barely hidden by the imposing tattoo that runs the length of his body.

If you want to see what he looks like, all you have to do is go to the gym in the Arasaka tower, where he sometimes works out shirtless. You can see that while he's not imposing in terms of height or huge muscles, he's well-trimmed, with well-defined muscles. He's charging without really looking like it. It makes you want to touch it.

He's never really lazy. Even in comfortable clothes, he wants beautiful materials and to be able to open his door without shame. This man likes to control how others see him. If he's not going out, Isao wears an indoor outfit based on pyjama trousers and an open robe/kimono. Or maybe wide-legged trousers with no shirt. But not ugly trousers or overly baggy ones, just what you need to be relaxed but clean. Comfortable, easy to put on, but not too lazy! If he's going out, he'll choose a plain T-shirt and the same loose trousers. Often all black or red. Nothing flashy, as usual. It's all very casual.

face: Describe your OC's face. What's their smile like? Are their orbs cerulean? What would someone notice first when looking at them?

A sleek Greek nose, sculpted cheekbones, mischievous green eyes, a rosy mouth with a thin upper lip and a fleshy lower lip that makes you want to kiss it, framed by an undergroomed beard on a delicate jawline, all held in place by chestnut hair with auburn highlights in the sun, medium-length curls and rebellious locks, some of which fall over her forehead. At the age of 24, Enzo's skin is tanned under the desert sun, with freckles and scars on his cheeks and forehead, resulting from accidents in life and on the road. His eyes are circled, and he doesn't sleep much because he can drive for hours in the middle of the night, stop to sleep for 3 hours and then start again for the pleasure of driving in the rising sun. He's used to waking up early at the camp, no matter how late he goes to bed. He's up at 5.30 a.m. to be at the garage corner to work with his father in the fresh air, and then he has a siesta in the afternoon when it's too hot to work. He often leaves afterwards to run an errand or have some fun… His dark circles signify a busy life for this active man!

As for his grin, I'd like to say his grins. This cheeky fellow often wears a mischievous smirk, as if he's always got something on his mind. This reveals a dimple in the right corner of his mouth. The discreet smile, almost shy without being coy. Enzo often doesn't know how to act with the person in front of him but doesn't want to lose face. It can also be forced, with lips pursed, a sign that something is affecting him. Or annoys him. The bright, luminous, happy smile. It's the smile of good days, victories and happy moments too. It's also the smile of celebrations with friends and family.

But what people see first are his eyes. A perfect green, neither too dark nor too light, sparkling and penetrating. It's hard not to look into his eyes, especially as they are the perfect mirror of his mood, betraying his emotions!

night: What does your OC wear to sleep? Do they have a favorite pair of PJs, or are they more the birthday suit type?

A good nomad will tell you that it's a risk to sleep naked in your tent. You never know what might happen in the middle of the night, or who might turn up in the morning uninvited. Enzo is well aware of this, and that's why he always sleeps either in his boxers or in one of the sports shorts he sometimes wears around the camp. He rarely wears a top, and despite the coolness of some nights, he prefers to wrap himself up in his blanket rather than sweat in his bed! And even when he sleeps in motels after a race, he won't be completely naked, out of habit. He'll only do that when he's with Jay, who's probably too tired to look for his clothes!

He also sometimes sleeps in his car after driving for several hours. He often just takes off his jacket and gloves, and sometimes his shoes, but remains fully dressed. Once again, it's for practical reasons and to avoid being caught unprepared.
