Ada Combs plays Banjo and sings for the boys on her porch in 1959 Whitesburg, Kentucky, US.
Ada Combs was born in 1905 and grew up on Bear Branch of Poll's Creek in Leslie County. She tells about her windowless one-room school and of wading through the creek to reach it. She recalls farm chores and neighborhood activities such as stir-offs, bean-stringings, and gatherings to play music. She picked duck and goose feathers, made soap, and helped her aunt make maple sugar. Her family pickled beans, made sauerkraut, and sulfured apples as well. Combs especially remembers her grandmother's first cookstove because prior to that time cakes and pies were not made in her home. Combs recalls the flu epidemic of 1918 and comments upon herb doctors and "granny women." She indicates that she was twenty-one when she first visited Hyden. Combs married and left Leslie County before the advent of the FNS (Food Nutrition Service)

Time for Smallholder Farmer Empowerment
The urban dwellers have always been contented partaking of cheap food supplies while reserving their serious money for ostentatious activities like drinking alcohol while consuming imported supplies
For ages, the smallholder farmer has been regarded as a small earner. The urban dwellers have always been contented partaking of cheap food supplies while reserving their serious money for ostentatious activities like drinking alcohol, consuming imported supplies and gyrating in discotheques. Food was taken for granted and the plight of the peasant farmers was only given lip service. Many…

What a difference a few weeks make … the Polycrub has exploded and I love it. We’ll soon be harvesting fresh strawberries, spinach, sugar snap peas and even have some ginger poking up through the soil. The beetroot is flourishing and the cauliflowers look fantastic too … I’m just so happy. 😃
The whole thing looks and feels like a literal jungle and it’s one of my favourite places to sit and relax … 😌

A few years back I spent a January working on this smallholding in Wales and I'm still friends with the owner on Facebook so I occasionally see posts from her dickhead husband (one of the reasons I left) and they're always shit like
Tumblr media
Their farm is a horse stud with 10 horses and a couple of other hobby animals. They produce maybe 6 pigs a year and some lamb. No vegetables. While I was there eggs from their chickens went uneaten because they had like 25 chickens but didn't want to eat eggs every day and didn't have a proper hook up for giving/selling them as everyone else in the smallholder neighbourhood also had chickens

Effects of climate change on farming
Farmers have been adapting to the conditions imposed on them by their region’s climate since the inception of agriculture. Recent human-induced climate changes like Extreme heat, floods, droughts, hail and windstorms, are pushing them further to the corner. On top of that there are changes in weed species and distribution, pest and disease pressures, in addition to potentially depleted soils and increased pest pressure. Climate change affects farming in several ways by bringing the change in
average temperatures
rainfall
climate extremes (heat waves)
pests and diseases
atmospheric carbon dioxide and ground-level ozone concentrations
the nutritional quality of some foods.

Getting ready to light our fire.
We discovered this ‘Kindling Cracker’ a few years ago, and it’s been a real blessing. So simple and easy that everyone in our family can use it.
We’ve fastened ours to a log, then all you need is a 3 to 4lb stoning hammer to split the wood. With lots of animals and kids running around, for us it was a much safer option than using an axe.
I’d highly recommend it … 👍😃
