On 18th June, 2016, India’s first batch of Women Fighter Pilots were commissioned. 

Bhawana Kanth, Avani Chatuvedi and Mohana Singh are now a part of history, breaking the norm. There is no special training for the women cadets, they will be undergoing the same training as the men do.

Women have been flying helicopters and transport aircraft since 1991 in the Indian Air Force, it was only recently that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar took the decision to have women as part of the fighter pilots’ wing in the IAF.

Here’s to these three women being the first to shatter the age old thought of women not being capable enough. Here’s to them, their grit and their hard work.

Before we get replies from trolls saying “It was just a joke, worse things are out there!”, “It happens to men too!” 

A joke that treats a woman like a sexual object is of no value. Worse things are out there, but brushing off the degradation of an individual is the root of many of them. So, congratulations to you for making the world a bit more horrific.

Yes, this happens to men too. Sexualising any gender needs to be put to an end and denying the fact that women are not treated as sex objects only fails to achieve that.
