We had a fabulous time visiting Batuu yesterday! Our outfits were comfortable and functional and well suited to what turned out to be a relatively cold and cloudy day in southern California. Disney cast members definitely seemed to interact with us more because we made the effort to dress up, and we got some lovely compliments from other guests, too. We were even gifted some BSO credit coins by random strangers who liked our outfits!
Tumblr media
It was Jack's first visit to Batuu, and while I did get to spend a little bit of time there with my mom in October, this was my first opportunity to really explore the entire area, browse through the shops, and sample all the food and drinks available. It was at least as cool as my first impression of it back in October, and Jack was impressed and delighted by all of it. We spent a good portion of the day just admiring all the details and world-building and excellent sets.
Jack has requested no photos, but I did manage to snag this pic of him blocking the camera like a victim of the paparazzi, lol.
Tumblr media
But look at those pleats! Both Jack and I are so pleased with how they turned out. Several of the Resistance jackets on display in the Rise of the Resistance queue had similar pleat details, and it was fun to look at them up close.
Tumblr media
Over this last weekend and all the way up to late Monday night, I was able to add a few last details to our outfits. I finally adjusted the chain length of my dangley earrings and glued the leather cording wraps to the back of my kyber crystal necklace so that it wouldn't slip out. While I had the glue out, I figured I'd take a stab at making some spat-type things to cover the lacings of my tall Doc Marten boots. I was completely winging it from start to finish, but I'm really happy with how they turned out!
The spats are made from some left over suede I've had in my stash for literally more than 20 years now -- it's been used for an Aragorn vest for Jack, a couple of bags for me, and the inner layers of the big wedge shaped piece on my Oswin belt. And I still have some left over! Maybe I'll make myself a belt pouch to match these spats at some point in the future.
Tumblr media
The narrow end of each spat tucks under the laces closest to the toe of my boot, and theoretically secures to itself with a hook and eye, though I found the hook didn't really hold from that angle, and really wasn't necessary anyway. The straps then velcro around the back of my leg, at the lowest point of the bend of my ankle, and right at the top of the boot, so that the strap sits just above the top edge of the boot in the back, which helps keep it from slipping down.
To make these I really just draped scrap suede on my boot while wearing it, started cutting it to the shape I thought might make sense, then copied that over for a second spat. I measured how much I would need for the straps and how much of an overlap I wanted for the velcro, then cut out all those pieces and glued them together using E6000 -- which works wonderful for adhering velcro to suede and suede to suede, but is a bit more iffy with the metal hooks and eyes (one eye popped off when I was taking off the spat at the end of the night, but since it wasn't staying hooked anyway, I'm not fussed).
Despite being such a quick off-the-cuff project, the spats worked out great, and added that last little bit to my outfit by covering the laces of my boots. They're visible in the third photo, the full-length shot in front of the door (and in the video below), and I think they add an understated bit of texture difference in all the black-on-black there, in addition to obscuring the modern look of the boots a bit.
Besides those detail bits for me, I also made a pair of little pockets for Jack's jacket, to hold 'code cylinders'. It's a tiny detail that really makes the jacket look that much more Star Wars-y, and the cylinders themselves are empty and their tops unscrew, so the space can actually be functional, too. (Currently they're filled with gum!)
Tumblr media
And at Jack's request, I threw together a quick insert for the zipper section on his collar that used to hold the hood before we removed it. The hood was making the collar too puffy, but without it the collar didn't have enough body to stand up on its own.
I took some measurements, then cut a piece of cotton duck canvas (that I had originally bought to cover the zippers on my Moment vest, before I changed gears and made the Batuu vest instead) to the right length and about three times the height of the interior of the hood section. I did a simple zigzag tri-fold on the height, ironed it flat, and marked some guide lines perpendicular to the length. Then it was just a simple process of quilting the three layers together by machine sewing in short vertical rows ~1cm apart.
Tumblr media
The quilting gave the canvas even more stiffness, and after that point it absolutely did not want to fold or droop along the short vertical axis. I slipped it into the former hood pocket (after snipping one corner to fit around the snap I hadn't accounted for), zipped it closed, and gave the whole collar area a quick pressing. It's removable if we ever need to, completely washable, and keeps the collar standing upright without looking too stiff. Jack was very happy with the result.
With our outfits finally done, we headed into the park around mid-morning, with a plan to stay late. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with Batuu Bounding at Disneyland (which is notoriously a bit more hit-and-miss than Batuu East, in Florida), but we got through security without incident and through the rest of the park without anyone commenting on our outfits. We saw someone else wearing the same leather-look leggings as me, and a guy wearing similar jacket and pants to Jack (but without the pleating), which made us feel like we didn't look too weird, by general Disneyland standards.
Tumblr media
Once we were in Batuu, though, our bounding definitely got noticed more. A couple of fellow guests complemented our outfits (including the kind strangers who gave us the coins!), and cast members seemed way more interested in interacting with us in-character. I got to bring up a bit about the history I'd made up for Samæni Ray -- which led to one cast member later referring to me and Jack as "my friends from Denon!" All of the prep and character design made it a lot easier to think on my feet in those little improv interactions.
One cast member in particular kept finding us throughout the day, just suddenly appearing out of nowhere it felt like, and kept trying to sell us a speederbike that totally wasn't a broken down lemon.
Tumblr media
Later in the day, he kind of sold us out to Kylo Ren and a pair of stormtroopers (but like, in a fun way, lol) which led to an intense interaction with Kylo Ren right up in both my face and Jack's. Kylo Ren is tall, and the voice and the mask and the body language was all perfect up close. There was a bit of nervous laughter on our part, but we kept our cool and convinced Ren that that since we'd only just arrived on Batuu from Denon, we couldn't possibly know anything about any Resistance activity in Black Spire Outpost.
We were way too in the moment to get any photos, but because we were dressed up and Kylo Ren was so much up in our faces, we did draw a bit of a crowd, so for all I know other people may have taken pictures or videos of the event, lol. My family has a saying about 'look hard' rather than take photos, and it was definitely that for us.
Overall the whole day was wonderful, and we ended up spending nearly 12 hours in Batuu without leaving once. I got to pilot the Falcon multiple times (though I can't really say I've gotten any better at it, lol), and got to try out gunner and engineer, too. We managed to ride Rise of the Resistance both during the day and again after dark, explore every part of Black Spire Outpost in detail, learn to play Sabacc with a cast member, have drinks at Oga's, and eat a bunch of really tasty, really well-presented food.
Tumblr media
All together it was an excellent, excellent birthday. And we're already talking about when we might want to go back again.

So ah, new development: apparently I am NOT the only one who gets songs stuck in their head and can impact the whole workshop with that sleet? Someone has had the “can I get to the yams?” song in their head for the past six hours and friends? I am going to lose my mind if I can’t figure out who it is. I have already asked half of the main floor. I have ruled out the informations departments, and the warehouse couriers. Who tf is it, who wants those sweet yams I’m going to scREAM—

Helicobacter Pylori
Spicing things up a bit with a Gram Negative Helical/spiral Bacteria
Tumblr media
Epidemio:
up to 50% of the population worldwide, but even more in endemic countries/the 3rd world
Tumblr media
it can cloud differentials, as it can be asymptomatic unless it caues peptic ulcer disease, in which case the infection may have been decades prior to detection - so you have to interpret serology with a grain of salt (it may not be the culprit of acute infection)
often picked up in early childhood and lingers without treatment for dcades
by contrast, 5% of children in the US have had it, so it may change your clinical decision making depending on where your patient grew up
In australian populations, up to 30% have it, but again, high frequency in older migrants, lower socioeconomic status etc.
Transmission:
faecal oral or even sexual (did not know that one)
increased risk:
lower socioeconomic status/growing up in a developed country
family history of infection and gastric cancer
What it does:
cause ulceration (peptic ulcer disease)
and inflammation or gastritis
due to it's helical shape and flagella, it can penetrate the mucosal lining
Trivia/History:
discovered by Australians in Western Australia in the 1980s
To quote the IM physician, Barry Marshall, in the face of skepticism that a bacteria could survive the stomach's acidic environment: "everyone was against me, but I knew I was right"
After failing to publish and some lab snaffus, he decided to do a Jonas Salk and swallow a broth of Hpylori himself. Of course this last experiment was published in an Australian journal.
At any rate, it is now widely accepted that Hpylori is linked to PUD and gastric cancer and by 2005, the two Australians who found the bacteria received the Nobel prize in medicine
we now know so much more about the pathogen with advancements in microbiology
they also came up with the urease breath test for it
Clinical presentation:
asymptoamtic
symptom onset occurs after gastritis and peptic ulcer disease develop: nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, abdo pain, or at the extreme when the lining has eroded, bleeding/haematemesis
Tumblr media
Important differentials
coeliac's
Crohn's
nSAID induced gastritis
reflux
lactose intolerance
eosinophilic oesophagitis (sooo rare, usually a/w dysphagia)
Investigations (all with relatively good/high sens and spec)
H pylori antigens in stool
serology (antibodies in serum, urine) --> usually IgG, hence can remain positive for years even post eradication
urease breath test
if a scope was involved due to PUD, then histopathology and culture (reduced sensitivity if treated with PPI in 2/52 prior or Abx 4/52 prior)
actually had no idea they breathed into little bags.
Tumblr media
Treatment:
triple therapy - PPI, amoxicillin and clarithromycin for 14 days, in penicillin allergy replace amox with metro (increasing resistance is why metro is not first line in some countries - refer to local guidelines made based on local Abx resistance trends)
In patients younger than 50, it can be cost effective to treat if they have reflux on testing (if there's a high pretest probability - see increased risk groups) given the life time risk of PUD & gastric cancer, can also reduce risk of GIB
balance of risk/benefit: will it significantly improve QOL or will risks of ADRs outweigh the benefits (eg frail, elderly, multiple comorbidities)
when used in those with PUD - improves ulcer healing, recovery and prevents relapse
in simple ulcers, triple therapy is all that is required in more chronic complex ones --> 8/52 of PPI is also recommended to prevent recurring of bleeding etc.
not treating can lead to relapse and complications like bleeding/perforation/cancer risk
Complications
rarely, it can cause gastric adenocarcinoma as a known carcinogen
aka MALT lymphoma - mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue
this resolves with triple therapy (Usually)
consider it in family histories of gastric cancer
life time risk of gastric cancer at 2% and 15-20% risk of peptic ulcer disease
Wish the acronym wasn't MALT. But could be a good way to remember it. MALT, tasty, gastritis and Hpylori.
Tumblr media
Follow-up
test for eradication 2 weeks post with stool antigen or urease breath test (serology less effective as the IgGs can remain positive for years) but that's on holding the PPI for 1/52 to prevent a false negative, some countries want both tests
in resistance or relapse there's salvage therapy, usually with bismuth or a quinolone.
Sources:
Wikipaedia - I havent covered pathophysio or it's cellular mechanisms and virulence factors, but there's a good overview in wiki
StatPearls (more paeds focused in this one)
CDC guidelines
Australian Therapeutic guidelines (Paywalll rest above are free)

Happy December! What were your favourite moments of 2022 on simblr? They can be from your blog or someone else’s <3
Hiii!! What a great question for some reminiscing. This was a great year for Simblr imo. There's a few things that were fav moments for me.
Royal Simblr Portrait Collab - Was very proud of this and it turned out to be the 2nd post on my Tumblr Top 10! I love those portaits and use them in my game pretty regularly. Plus it was nice seeing everyone come together like this!
Royal Collabs - It's always a fun time when I get to collab with my favorite folks on Simblr. I've got to do so many fun ones this year like the KBE store opening in Whitmore with @whitmoreroyals, the political snaffu with @royalmedani, and just seeing my sims live their best life in other countries: @armoricaroyalty, @houseofwindensor, @thebaillieroyals, @the-royals-ts4, @trentonsimblr, @warwickroyals, @cyberth0t.
Sims Coachella - That was so fun and I'm so glad I participated. That post was also in my Top 10! Can't forget that incredible performancy by Bailey Kay @ladybugsimblr!!
Next KBE Model - The fact that I had the idea and actually executed on it was a miracle. lol. But it was so fun and I'm glad KBE had one last hurrah! Or did it? Who knows. lol Of cours thanks to the folks who helped make it happen: @trentonsimblr @ladybugsimblr @someone-elsa @eslanes @royalmedani @mickimagnum @ellemant @atreanroyals
KBE Sparkle Collection - They may just be some recolors, but I'm always proud of myself when i do a cute little collection to make Bria's brand feel a little more real. This collection definitely helped me get more skilled at it and it was just overall fun to do!

So I have a rough timeline of what happened to the Inn after we left it.
Three kids (Wendy, 8; Charles 14; Eve, 5 ) had escaped from a nearby orphanage after it was destroyed by the Dreamer invasion; I don’t think there were any other survivors. They managed to reach the Inn, miraculously avoiding trouble along the way. The electricity was still functional due to the emergency generator - the Nameless Church had been setting this place up as their second safehouse after all.
Having found shelter and a refrigerator full of food, the kids were happy for that evening - at least until they found out this place was “haunted.” Sometimes the food would levitate without warning and disappear, the refrigerator would close shut as soon as it was opened, sometimes they’ll randomly trip on nothing on the floor. Essentially, they discovered the B.C.’s who were probably wondering “why are all these people stealing our food.”
Charles was the one who had asked the B.C.’s if they could stay and that they were sorry for disturbing them (thinking they were the ghosts of the deceased). After that small snaffu, the B.C.’s started tolerating other people’s presence, even as stray dogs kept bringing more and more people here. There’s like 18 people in the inn now, most of them kids - and a dozen recuperating dogs. Some of them are adults who have permanent injuries like the military guy Raymond that initially fired the warning shot at us.
No one’s sure how the whole “taxes” thing got started. But given they were assuming the B.C.’s were the spirits of the dead (now wearing hats after Eve said she’ll feel better if she could see them), every time a B.C. would come back from raiding the supermarket, they’d dump the food at the people living inside - and the people in turn would offer some of the foods they collected back. “Taxes” got its name because it’s both one of the main B.C.’s that did the raiding and was also reliable enough to be taken outside and not do typical B.C things (like get utterly distracted).
Pretty sure the Blank Canvases get something out of stuff being offered to them whether it be food or material. It explains why Taxes has a flower on its head. The others seem to have more “leaves of grass” on their head so Taxes isn’t hogging the wealth, but it’s clearly Taxes has grown the most in intelligence. It’s also clearly the leader.
Which brings us to now.
The Inn group is now packing up to move to the residential safehouse - the Canvases are helping by eating stuff to put into storage. Taxes is staying by Eve’s side like a big red flamboyant bird; Eve oddly enough can see Taxes but not the other Canvases.

No bc the amount of damage to society that male bronies in the early 2010s, SNAFFU comics and male cartoon youtubers and creators have done to young girls by filling up searches and google images of children’s characters with disturbed deviantart VERY thinky veiled f*tish material and would groom young female fans, and how so many of them have hard drives of physical and animated cp (like snaffu, even when I was a super young kid I knew he was WIDELY KNOWN to be a sex offender yet he was still allowed to post his creepy f*tish content about the literal power puff girls, 5 year old characters beloved by children 😐) When I (and many others I assume) first explored the animation and art communities they were so dominated with male chauvinism and depravity, they would share gross misogynistic and explicit materials CONSTANTLY while creating content about children’s shows to algorithmically groom kids into this, so many were called out for grooming girls literally ages 13 to like... 8??? I think this is why the animation and comics communities and job positions are overwhelmingly male while historically art colleges have been majority female, they’ll see female talent and do their best to groom and jade them into losing their passions until they can maintain hierarchical control. Also interesting how many of those moids later came out as awesome trans gals to hide their asses, with transitions goals to look as similarly to anime child characters as possible and again NOBODY talks about it

Is there an estimated date for the release of the demo? I don't want to rush you I just have no idea if there is or not, I'm terrible at using Tumblr
No, no, you're totally okay! I've had a lot of irl snaffus that shoved my release date. So, honestly, I have a rough idea for November at the latest. While The Forgotten Series is something that I'm passionate about. And I do love working on it. I still have to make a living.

Okay, so after last night's snaffu (including in the GOOD RUN where Chrom got hit on a 12% while in Pair Up with A Support Sumia...) Anna has offered her apology. I got an on-sale Master Seal and a regular price Second Seal from two merchants.
Also, I did a run in the OG file for Lon'qu's birthday since he's married to my Avatar. In the new file, he also got me a free Titania's Axe.
Off to recruit a dragon...

For the longest time, I thought the artist Imogen Heap was actually pronounced "Image In Heat" - the description of a mirage. This is what it sounded like to me. I'd thought she'd wanted to call herself a cool replacement for the word instead of "Mirage."
I had no idea her name was Imogen Heap until years later when I actually saw it in writing.
Boy, I felt dumb. In my defense, when I was a kid, I didn't know that Imogen was an actual name, so my brain matrixed unfamiliar syllables into something familiar. The natural progression for my logic was that the last part was "Heat" and not "Heap." (Unless strongly pronounced, or used in a known word and context, it is hard to differentiate the P and T sounds.) And Imogen sounded like "Image in." What do you see when it's really hot? An image. A mirage. It just made sense to me to say "Image In Heat" and think she was really cool to call herself the description of a mirage.
Because of this audio snaffu, there's a popular band in my book called "Image In Heat." :) It's a friendly jab at my own mental gymnastics to understand her name.
youtube
I still love her song "Come Here Boy." It's the chord progressions, the arrangement, and the vibe. I had a habit (still do) of loving a song for the instrumentation with the ability to ignore the words. To me, they become sounds that just hit me in the right way. Words unneeded.

Bit of a financial snaffu hit me this morning when I lost $326 in cash on the way to deposit it in the bank, which is not great since that was going towards bills/taxes.
If anyone needs artwork done, tarot readings, intuitive sketch readings, or something of the like, I'd appreciate you looking at my info or shops. Thank you.
