Raph Is A Great Strategist

Numerous times in the show Raph has shown to have a preference for straightforwardly punching his problems away rather than think up a more complex solution. Like how his immediate fix to getting Mayhem out of the mirror in Mystic Library was to punch everything in the bathroom but the mirror. However, when Raph understands the situation requires more in depth strategy, he’s shown to be an incredibly capable tactician.

In nearly all the plot heavy episodes like Shadow of Evil, Many Unhappy Returns, and the season finales, Raph gets moments where he’s highlighted for his strategic thinking. In Insane in the Mama Train, he’s the one who figures out which eyeball-button goes to the front car with the dark armor, because “‘it was the only button [the Foot Clan] didn’t want me to press!’” [21:05]. He’s also the one who came up with the scheme to defeat all the (known) combatants in the train, with Leo specifically attributing Raph as the deviser during their mind meld [19:46]. In Many Unhappy Returns, after spending a single night waylaying the Shredder, Raph formulated a plan using all the tricks the team learned, seamlessly transitioning the mystic collar Leo acquired into it [19:53], to defeating the Shredder. Additionally, he’s repeatedly called for a retreat during fights, like in Shadow of Evil, Shreddy or Not (Finale pt 2), and the movie, when he can tactically recognize that a battle couldn’t be won. Each time, the show/movie implied that that was the right call, for the family to lose the fight but win the war.

And it’s not just that Raph is good at strategy when he’s pushed to be more serious; the show characterizes him as passionate about creating plans, he enjoys doing it. Literally in the first episode, Mystic Mayhem, after the turtles’ initial plan failed of getting Splinter out of the living room to touch his Do-Not-Touch Cabinet, Raph immediately started devising a new plan that involved “ten chickens [and] a gallon of rubber cement” [9:35]. It was convoluted, sure, and they didn’t end up using it, but it was inventive and the opposite of reluctant. This is also shown in Bug Busters, where Raph planned out dousing Mikey in honey to attract the oozequitoes [2:52]; Snow Day, with the idea to freeze Ghost Bear like in Jupiter Jim Pluto Vacation 4; and Raph’s Ride-Along (and also Bad Hair Day), where Mind Raph created multiple schemes to get the criminals arrested. The show wouldn’t have made Raph be so creative with his plans if they were trying to characterize him as someone who didn’t like strategizing.

So does why Raph do stupid shit sometimes where he doesn’t think things through at all? Well, even though Raph is good at strategy and enjoys doing it, it’s clear his immediate impulse is still “punch the problem in the face”. In fact, all the turtle boys contain the fascinating dichotomy of being incredibly smart in some areas, and the dumbest teenagers alive in others. Just look at Donnie. It’s also how Raph is a loving protective older brother, and the guy who shoved Leo into a wall so hard he disappeared in one frame for shits and giggles (The Mutant Menace x). None of this means that Raph is bad at strategy though.

tldr: Yeah, Raph has a lot of dumb and, frankly, insane moments in the show, but he’s still an incredible tactician who’s plans consistently saved his family and sometimes the world. He's a great strategist.

Man oh man, this one was way messier and off model than my last few updates but whatever, we got to keep this ball rolling! Life's been crazy so I've had to take some unwanted breaks in between updates. Thanks everyone for your patience as always!

One thing I wanted in this flashback was to really get a sense of how the brothers worked as an experienced team with Leo at the helm as a proper leader. It's something we never got to see much of in Rise and I felt it was important to include since half the team is already gone by the time of Replica. Team Dynamics Ted Talk under the cut!

We know from Casey Jr that Leo stressed the importance of listening to your team. A big part of that also means knowing how to communicate with them in general.

With Michelangelo, he keeps it short and succinct, trusting his brother to know what he's doing when in his element. This trust goes a long way with Mikey, having spent years of his youth as the baby striving for the respect he felt he deserved. Leo knows it's best to not bog Mikey down with details, allowing him to improvise as needed. This unspoken freedom has only grown over time as Mikey has dipped deeper into spiritual arts that, frankly, go completely over Leo's head.

The greatest sacrifice Leo has ever made was read Donnie's Big Book of Bad Guy Codes. While he doesn't remember ALL the numbers, he has memorized the ones that matter and it has helped tremendously in avoiding miscommunication with his genius brother. More importantly it silenced any of Donnie's usual belly-aching. As Leo's "twin"/"equal" the two still butt heads from time to time. Donnie respects his brother's authority (mostly) but will still push the boundaries of what he's allowed on a semi-regular basis. Give Donnie an inch and he will take the mile and then find a loop hole that allows him to go twenty miles more. This is partially due to him often being the one left behind at HQ, making the turtle just a TAD stir crazy. Leo does his best to keep him in line regardless.

Big brother Raph will forever and always be big brother to Leo. As such he holds a place of authority in Leo's heart and is someone he still regularly seeks counsel from in both the ways of leadership and more. Raph is always happy to support his younger brother and does a surprisingly good job (albeit after years of practice) of walking the line so as not to step on his brother's toes in the process. At least not since the secret of "the Key" blew up in their faces several years ago. They don't talk about that anymore. Leo is the leader now and he's done a great job in recent years as far as Raph is concerned. He trusts him to make the right call. The two have a close bond and regularly use mind meld to quickly communicate rather than speak ...this will be important to remember for the future.

At what point did you decided to make Uncle Tello sick? Way back at the beginning of the second comic? During the tiny Tello attack? Somewhere in the middle? I NEED TO KNOW!!

This is an interesting little story.

Before I started drawing this comic, I wanted to write a fanfic. The fanfic is about the young Leo who goes to a bad future and gets stuck there for a while. He has medical knowledge and his ninpo, so pretty quickly he becomes something of an apocalyptic ambulance for the resistance. He rescues people and yokai from the battlefield if they are seriously wounded. Thanks to him, the survivability of the resistance increases dramatically because they have someone capable of instant evacuation and immediate medical attention.

Also, there was supposed to be Donnie in this fanfic. Alive. And Leo would have had the most interaction with him, because Rafe, Mikey, and F!Leo would have been on missions all the time. And Donnie's right here in the lab. Safe, building stuff and listening to Leo chatter haha

But through the whole fanfic, there would appear these very little things, little signs of illness. And eventually Donnie would slowly die.

I thought about this story for a long time and planned a lot of hints for the disease arc. But then this comic started, and I thought, hey, I'm certainly improvising and I don't know where this is all going, but the sickness death plot has already become canon in my head, so I'm going to draw this comic with the idea that Donatello's ending looks like this.

Donnie’s a photo enthusiast

Any sunset or equation or person he finds entrancing, you can bet he’s archiving that in his archives

So, when he notices you looking like an absolute spectacle, you know he’s all over that, camera in hand, ready for a shoot

But when he sees the results, he’s flabbergasted

Jaw agape, brows furrowed, completely puzzled

 “Ope. Uhhh, the lighting on that one was really bad. Just the lighting. Definitely not you. Anyway, let’s try that again.”

When it ends up the same - that is to say, foul - he’s absolutely perplexed

He tries a plethora of angles, multiple kinds of lenses, he makes new inventions to try and solve it, but it is all for naught

Despite his effort, every photo of you fails to capture the inane beauty you capture naturally

That doesn’t mean he’ll ever stop trying

Mikey

Mikey has the exact same situation

Somehow his rugged good looks don’t translate well into photographs

So, when every time he sets out to get a nice picture of the two of you, it never ceases to seem like some sort of eldritch horror

“Life is messy. So is art.”

He’s likely to say something along these lines while admiring a photo of you two looking like feral gremlins

Honestly, Mikey is a chillaxed kind of guy, so he’s never going to be upset about your pictures not turning out

Even if he has a specific vision for one, he won’t be perturbed if it doesn’t look how he wants it to

He’ll just do what he does best: improvise

Leo

When Leo first meets you, he actively tries to take terrible photos of you

Call it what you want - a bonding experience, blackmail material for down the road - it’s just something he does with every new person he meets

Fortunately for him, the task proves easy

Maybe even too easy

Once he gets a sufficiently vast album of downright horrific photos of you, Leo decides to let you off the hook and get some nice photos of you and him

Except he can’t

Every photo he gets with you in it is rancid, respectfully

At first he thinks you’re messing with him

“Okay, I get it. It was unfair to try to take bad pics of you, but you can stop now.”

When he sees your confusion, that’s when he realizes that it’s not you, that it’s actually just happening naturally

So that’s when his objective changes: take a genuine good photo of you

Raph

Just like when he saw a pigeon eating a slice of pizza and couldn’t stop pursuing it with a camera, Raph finds a good photo of you to be just as elusive

”Wait! Don’t move!”

Despite how it sounds like there’s something life threatening, he just thinks it’s a viable opportunity for a genuinely decent photo of you, the lighting just so, the atmosphere perfect

Yet he can never seem to get one that portrays just how he sees you, nothing that does you justice

It also doesn’t help that every photo he takes of you is unbelievably blurry and/or has one of his fingers partially covering the lens

To be honest, he never knows if it’s you or him throwing the photo off

So he just calls the blame 50/50

Some miscellaneous doodles for ACT I of my Grown Apart AU!

If you squint, you can get a little context for the plot. ... If you don't feel like squinting, however, here are some convenient notes I've included about what's going on in each image:

Donnie hides his spidertech underneath a specially designed tailcoat that he made himself. The back has two openings on either side, hidden by an overlapping layer of fabric, from where the mechanical legs extend. Naturally, each spider leg hides a multitude of secret functions, most of which no one else but him knows about (not even Big Mama.)

Raph thinks Draxum's new prisoner/test subject, who he's been instructed to keep an eye on (no trouble there!), is just the cutest thing ever.

Leo and Mikey experience the joys of a two-child-household. When the little sibling is bored, no one else is allowed to know peace.

When Draxum joins sides with the Foot Clan, Raph is forced to work alongside humans for the first time. Draxum's always taught him that humans are the enemy of the yokai and that they need to be destroyed, so he's a bit...conflicted about this new development.

In an attempt to prove his usefulness to Big Mama - Donnie enters the Hamato residence as a spy, under the pretense of being an escapee of Big Mama's prisons (is it really all pretense, though?) He manages to win the ever-optimistic Mikey over with little trouble, but Leo is not as easily convinced and remains suspicious of the purple-clad "yokai's" intentions.

Big Mama can't risk losing her best engineer and mechanic to the above world as she did her champion all those years ago. So, she takes every necessary precaution to ensure Dontavius (Donnie) remains under her thumb, exactly where she needs him to be. After all, Mama knows best ❤

Splinter searches for his two lost sons, ninja style - Leo and Mikey are still too young to be left at the lair by themselves, so he's had to improvise.

A little clue as to how April first meets the boys - Leo and Mikey, that is - in this AU.

He was in the middle of feverish dreams with his brothers, finally waking up, opening his eyes but seeing nothing. That scares him, he puts his hand to his face, feeling the bandages on his face, that explains the blindness... He hoped.

Lou Jitsu: – Calm down... It's okay, boy. Are you okay...

He recognizes Lou Jitsu's voice, becoming calmer, but he feels claws on his hands, making them strange.

Mikey: – Where... Where am I?

Lou Jitsu: – You're safe, we're in the sewers, in an abandoned wing.

Mikey: – Sewers? – feel your body relaxing, but for a short time. – The... The little turtles! Where they are? They...

Lou Jitsu: – They are all here. – He picks up the four babies, placing them on Mikey's lap. – They started crying whenever I took them away from you. So I had to improvise a bed here.

Mikey: – They are... They are all here... – he tries to feel them with his hands. Rapha's thorns. Donnie's soft shell. Leo... or was it him? It didn't matter, they were all there, they were all safe and that was what really mattered. - Everybody is here. – he repeats, with the lump in his throat tighter than ever. – They are safe.

Lou Jitsu: – Are you... their father?

Mikey: – What? No! No... – he swallows, pursing his lips. – I... I'm nobody... I'm just another one of Draxun's experiments... One of his failures...

Lou Jitsu looks at the boy, looks at the drawings on his back, they look similar to one of the little ones. He thought there was something more.

Mikey: – I... I need to know... My eyes they...

Lou Jitsu: – What do you remember?

Mikey: – That everything was exploding and when I turned around... Flames...

Lou Jitsu: – I see… – he sighs. – A secondary explosion took you by surprise. It hit your face and then you felt a little... Weird...

Mikey: – Strange? Strange how?

Lou Jitsu: – You... You passed out for a few moments, but then you stood up, you were awake, but not conscious. He helped me get the kids here, and when we were safe, he just... collapsed. He was unconscious for two weeks.

Mikey: – And my injuries?

Lou Jitsu: – Third-degree burns on arms, legs and face. They're healing well, with no apparent infection, which was very lucky since we're... right in the sewer. You've been through the worst.

Mikey: – And... My eyes?

Lou Jitsu: – They… – swallows. – The fire hit them, I... I don't know if... They're fine, I'm not a doctor and I couldn't take you to one, so... - I had stolen medicines, bandages and whatever I could to take care of the boy.

Mikey – Can you take off the blindfold?

Lou Jitsu swallows hard, doing as the boy asks, removing the blindfold from his eyes. He keeps them closed for a while and when you open them he still sees only darkness.

Asking some writers/artists I follow:

Is there anything in your fic/comic that you as the author know about, but won't end up in the actual story?

So I have a rather uh disorganized way of telling the story of the TSAU, I jump back and forth in the timeline quite a bit depending on what part of the story I wanna tell. Overall I improvise quite a bit, and because of that I can't be 100% sure what will be depicted in the story and what wont. But I might as well share some little tidbits of lore that are probably not gonna be mentioned in the main story (though they still might who knows lol)

So uh. April and Kendra are exes. Kinda. They were pretty close friends when they were younger and decided to become a couple when they were like 9 or something. This lasted for a grand total of.... 2 days, maybe? Then they had a huge fight about something silly like, I dunno, Kendra hacked April's tamagotchi as a prank and she got mad so they broke up and they've had major beef ever since.

Draxum made Mikey wear some type of artifact or gear that supressed his mystic powers as a kid for his own safety. Mikey started showing an incredible talent for the mystic arts at a very young age. Draxum was excited about this for all of 5 seconds before realizing that Mikey is a VERY small child with NO impulse control and he's definetily gonna turn himself and the rest of the family into glitter unless Draxum finds a way prevent that from happening until Mikey has the chance to develop an understanding of consequences. (He's learned to control his powers well enough to not need them by the time of the main-story, so he no longer wears the supressors)

Donnie's whole villain-act he puts on is partially a coping mechanism. He grew up never knowing anyone like himself (unless you count Splinter, I suppose) so the only times he saw himself represented in anything was characters in comics and shows and such. There were plenty of anthropomorphic reptile characters in the media he consumed, and Donnie clunged to anyone or anything that he could at least somewhat relate to. Problem is, a lot of these anthro reptiles were like.... y'know... villains. It's pretty common for super heroes and stuff to fight evil mutant reptile creatures, and even stories with only anthro characters reptiles tend to be charactarized as more villainous. Granted, turtles specifically usually don't get this treatment, but it still had quite an effect on Donnie as a little kid that most characters similar to him would be viewed as evil, which caused him to internalize that mindset. So turtle tot Donnie basically went like "Yes! This is what I am! A villain in someone else's story! It all makes sense now! This is a healthy mindset to have!" and just kinda embraced the role that human society had given to him because he didn't really know how else to deal. (Things changed after meeting April and he found out that there might actually be humans out there who might treat him like a person and not just a freak of nature! He still plays into the villain-persona, partially for fun and partially as a coping thing, but he doesn't have nearly as a negative view of himself now as he did as a tot)

And last, but certainly not least................ Draxum owns a Lou Jitsu body pillow (PURELY for research-purposes, NO other reason!)

I thought 2k12 Donnie and Leo may be arguing again？Just like the original series（S2E25-26）.Because Don didn't follow his plan.....

Yes and no. See, in the first part of Hell on Earth you see this sequence play out:

Donnie finds a hole in Leo’s plan. The hole being that Leo wants them to destroy the crystals as soon as possible, but if they’re destroyed, then they can’t make a portal home.

If the Kraang get away with that crystal, tracking them down could take weeks if not months. That would be months of the Kraang having the ability to make a portal from anywhere to the Rise universe freely. Leo knows the kind of damage the Kraang can do in months and doesn’t want to risk it, so to guarantee that the absolutely can not get away with the crystal, they have to destroy it.

Krang, however, doesn’t mind them getting the crystal, once the Technodrome is through the portal, he has no intention of going back there. Krang wants to close the portal as soon as possible, but he wants that crystal intact so he can conquer all of reality, every dimension, every universe, everything everything. So, while they don’t have to destroy the crystal, Leo worries that if it’s not destroyed, just because the portal is closed and Krang is back in the Prison Dimension, the Kraang could just steal back the crystal and the whole disaster could start all over again.

Leo’s point here is that the only way to guarantee that the crystals don’t fall into the wrong hands or start some new catastrophe, is to wipe them from existence. Except if he does that, then—as Donnie pointed out—they’ll be stuck in the Rise universe forever.

Now you’re probably about to comment: “why don’t he just get Mikey to get a shard?” Well yes, as the author, I’m aware of that. But in universe, Leo has no clue what he’s up against. He doesn’t know what’s going to happen, what crazy tricks the Kraang and Krang have up their sleeves, he has no idea what could happen and so he’s planning to have to plan later when he better understands the situation.

Donnie, however doesn’t see that Leo is trying to improvise his plan moment by moment to account for the wild and unpredictable nature of the Kraang and Krang. If you guys remember back to Eye of the Storm, Leo learns to value his life after he scrapes death for the third time, but Donnie doesn’t see this. He still think Leo is a suicidal maniac with a guilt complex trying to prove his worth as a hero. He thinks that when Leo drew a blank, that he was lying. He thinks that Leo wasn’t saying “we’ll figure something out” because that part of the plan literally didn’t exist, but because he does have a plan and he knows that if he told it to Donnie, that Donnie would object.

Donnie is doing what Leo had hoped he would: figuring out a plan to make sure they can get home. I’d say the issue here is really more that Donnie has zero trust in Leo and is extremely suspicious of everything he says and does. I’m sure I could get into way more stuff on why Donnie still has no trust in Leo, but I feel like this response is long enough.

So to summarize: Yeah Donnie and Leo are in another fight, though this one isn’t verbal, yet anyway. Donnie thinks Leo is up to his old tricks, but really Leo is just trying to figure out how to take down some of the most powerful monsters in the universe while making sure everyone doesn’t die and ensuring that him and his team can get back home and hasn’t got there yet. Suffice to say there’s a lot of miscommunication going on, or really the lack there of.

For SWANATELLO

-A few of you noticed in this comic that Leo has flashcards! He (and the rest of his family) use these, as well as notes and visuals on Swannie's research board, to help him remember things. Part of the hope is that by going over memories and details repeatedly, Swannie will have an easier time remembering them and holding onto information even when they're not there. It is helping! A little, anyway.

-Swanatello dances often, even though there's no music... (Well, no music that anyone else can hear, anyway...)

-Swanatello tends to be a bit more outwardly emotional/needy than Donatello, which is partly just because he is so often confused or stressed, and therefore is more prone to seek comfort from his family when he's able to recognize them.

-Swanatello is currently capable of recognizing (to varying degrees) all three of his brothers, April, and Splinter. But he has yet to ever allow Baron Draxum access to his lake (much to everyone's frustration, as Barry would, in theory, be able to do a lot more research and make more progress if he could inspect the actual lake, and Donnie.)

-None of them will admit it, but all his brothers are a teeny bit salty that he can kick their asses so easily now.

-Fun Fact. This story takes place post-movie.

-Swanatello isn't the only one who does ballet! The Twins have been studying ballet since they were quite small, though it's fallen a bit to the wayside since they began their Battle Nexus careers, as their focus shifted to combat training and PR activities. Likewise, they both grew up taking voice lessons and are wonderful singers, and play multiple instruments (Leo plays the piano and guitar, and Donnie plays the violin, harp, and flute.)

-Both of them view themselves as the others' protector.

-Whenever they're out and about in public, Donnie always walks on Leo's right side, in case his bad knee or hip becomes painful. This way, Leo can subtly lean on Donnie if need be.

-Whenever they're doing interviews or on talk shows, they're always sent with instructions or some kind of script from Mama. Donnie has a photographic memory, whereas Leo struggles, and likewise, Leo finds improvising to come naturally whereas Donnie is more likely to freeze up or flounder. As a result, Donnie will always give Leo subtle hints, keywords, or cues during interviews to keep him on track, and Leo does most of the talking. If Leo is having a hard time, Donnie will jump in and nudge him in the right direction. Likewise, is Donnie is freezing up, Leo will always jump in and take over.

OKAY, so context is below the cut...

So on twitter, Star_Sparkler did a few drawings of August (her OC of Donnie's clone/daughter) if she had grown up in the bad future timeline. Well, one thing led to another and we started doing a fun little "what if" back and forth between her bad future August and Omega. It is entirely unscripted and improvised, but it's been really fun so far.

It's still ongoing (updates maybe once or twice a week), but it's hard to filter through on the Twitter threads so we had been meaning to make a proper compilation before it all gets lost in the ether. Well, @sewerninno surprised me the other day with a slide compilation that had all of our drawings... all +150 of them 0_o. Thank you so so much!

I felt it only fair to share it with the Tumblr community as well.

HUGE HUGE NOTE: This is NOT canon to Replica. Nor is any of the information about Omega shown here necessarily canon. This is just a fun what-if scenario where both AUs have August in the story. Omega is also a much bigger softy with her since, contextually, this is Donnie's daughter, so also sort of Omega's. So yeah... take it all with a big grain of salt.

ALSO, just so you know nothing really "happens" per se in this drawn out meeting. It's just a long, conversation between two characters, but if you like sweet, sappy, silly stuff this might be for you. Ok, I'm done, here you go.

I just wanna ask, is this gonna end sad? The Cass au I mean. Cause' you said Casey's maybe 13-14 right now, so I don't know if you're leading up to the events of the movie, or this is a comfort au where everything ends well and no one else dies. Besides, you know, minor angst.

Because after the last update on Krangified Casey, I'm feeling like this is the calm before the storm. You even said and I quote during the grandpa Mikey bit "Alright. Raph is alive again, Donnie isn't dead 'yet', Leo has his brothers and a son figure.."

Well, I kind of...improvise the whole story. I don't have a pre-conceived plan, and I usually come up with a story right as I'm drawing it.

The only thing I know for sure is that I want to make these comics compatible with canon. At least for the most part. So it's not au, but more like a DIY season about the bad timeline :1

Which means that I will either bring the events of the comic to the events of the movie, or come up with my own good ending that takes place after the movie. But I'll be honest, I haven't figured out how I'm going to do either of those things yet
