something super interesting to me is how a lot of viewers still struggle seeing mike reciprocating will's feelings, when the same thing could've been said for joyce in season 3.

i'd argue she's even harder to read than mike (mainly in s4) in most moments she has with hopper in season 3.

let's start off with their first interaction in season 3! and to really get into the grime, joyce's first time seeing hopper in the season.

is she just happy she has a visitor on a super slow day at work ("you're our first customer")? could be. she did immediately drop what she was doing the moment hop walked in, though.

when she does pick up on her tasks, she does incorporate a little flirting with hop... followed by the winona doe eyes look-up

then her gaze keeps getting softer

doesn't pull her eyes away from him...

and here it is. our first ever look at joyce byers yearning. (she hasn't processed what hop is saying yet give her a break lol)

she gets lost in the moment, and actually acts on wanting to feel closer to him, and comfort him.

these lyrics from "she's got you" by patsy cline are echoing her confusion right now. the lyrics in the caption are actually wrong, it should be "i really don't know, but i know it won't let me be" (i know that bc i'm a big fan of this song but that's beside the point lol). she doesn't know what her feelings for hopper could mean, but she's starting to realize they're there, and they might even be freaking her out a bit. understandably so! she lost bob a little under 8 months ago at this point, she hasn't even had a year to process her grief and trauma that came with witnessing it all.

then, hopper makes it real and asks her out. it is all about the microexpressions. her expression might've dropped, but her eyes are still saying the same thing, they're still holding that sense of longing. but that doesn't mean she isn't afraid, and taken aback, so it makes sense why joyce retreats.

on the subject of joyce retreating, standing hopper up isn't the only example. in my opinion, this scene is a very underrated, yet summation of how joyce handles romantic confrontation.

as hopper continues to call her out, we don't see her again. because once he says this, she basically dips.

sure, hopper wasn't fully digesting the problem at hand. but, all i'm saying is, isn't it convenient for joyce to use that fact to redirect the whole "you like me, but you're scare to move on" conversation by stealing his pliers (i think?) and making this lab mission happen?

and also, something something "like mother like son".

this is the part of the post where i flip the bird to anyone who says byler analysts only talk about other relationships to prove byler (which, i gotta say, is annoying in general because bro i love these characters with my whole soul, and identifying dialogue and visual parallels that I DIDN'T PUT THERE is apparently disrespectful and shallow or something? touch grass, idk what to tell you if this post is somehow offensive.) anyway! i am actually using byler to shed light on joyce's perspective on her relationship with hopper during season 3, and how similar the relationships are in stranger things collectively, so let's go!

let's rewind about 24 hours! i'm gonna lay out this interaction, because there's something familiar about it.

the second the romantic implication is said out loud, and taken as such, joyce gets deflective and uptight. this leaves hopper to emphasize their "friendship" in his defense.

this sounds a lot like mike and will's fight at rink o mania. (both in episode 2 btw)

will even clarifies that this is about friendship more than once, even if some things he said were his attempt in seeing how mike would take them. the importance of this is that joyce and mike get defensive in their own way, and it is because, regardless of how hopper/will delivered it (or intended the delivery to be), they took these conversations romantically, and reacted similarly. of course, joyce is a woman in her late 40s, and mike is a 14 year old boy, so one reaction is more extreme than the other, but that doesn't diminish the essence these reactions share. they [mike and joyce] even leave in one last stinger (again, one is more extreme than the other.)

while we're on the subject of byler and jopper uniquely paralleling each other, here's another one that spells it out better!

joyce and will feeling like they're losing their mind/going crazy because of the mindflayer vs hopper and mike feeling like they're losing their minds/going crazy because they think they're seeing things (you could go further saying its an association with el, since hop was fighting off the demodogs to keep them off of el, and mike literally thinks he's still seeing el herself).

i want to include one more scene comparison, and i've talked about it vaguely before.

before it was upside down, joyce and hop had their first moment on screen where they both openly and mutually pined for each other on this couch. and not only that, but it is all while being basked under a very similar morning sunlight.

1- Himiko x Ochako. I hold it very dear to me because it's the first ship that makes me think of my gf. BIAS! But it's just...we can identify so much with it, it was special, specially when we were still starting to learn things about each other.

2- Miku x Luka. This one's too classic to put somewhere else at the bottom. It's somehow like THE ship, icons for my lesbian ass, specially because when I was younger and into Vocaloid and Magnet came out, I was still in the closet, so looking back at it now is, idk, also special. Like now I can enjoy this ship even more. My younger self would be proud.

3- Ame x KAngel. Weirdest one because of selfcest/mirrorshipping whatever people call it these days. I've always found ships of one character x another version of themselves to be kinda tragic, and deep. It's like if there was no one else out there that could understand them better than they can understand themselves (happens to me with Neo x Trivia as well btw), and Ame has been so relatable and dear to me (as other characters in this list), that I gotta put it in the Top 3.

4- Spicecream (Cinder x Neo). It was actually my first RWBY ship so it's eternally up there for me. For one way or another it helped me cope too??? And in my head it's very toxic yuri, like, I give them the possibility of a good ending as well where they resolve their problems and get better, but I like the spice of making it actual toxic yuri. My head is a murder scene with these two LMAO...

5- Strawberry Shortcake (Ruby x Neo). I'm not gonna lie, I'm still traumatized from when people called me out over this stupid shit- but it still holds a special place in my heart as well because I developed a very nice story with my friend. It actually ended up being even less toxic than Spicecream and pretty wholesome, but people truly spoiled it for me. Either way, my focus on ships happen to depend on me being hyperfixated or not, so maybe my brain will get wired to get fixated on it again lol.

To me the ending felt like a copypaste of FFXIV Endwalker final sequence minus the friendly blood knight (walking through bridges in a liminal space seeing shades of people you've met in your travels, fighting a personification of existential despair, being saved by friends praying). I guess it's a stereotype of the genre? Or maybe they just borrowed from that game specifically, they do borrow from each other for inspiration.

I can't believe there are so few Guthred enjoyers ;_; He's fascinating (I may have a kink for a combination of devotion and ruthlessness. and being evil so that someone else can be noble and good looks at faves)

I don't necessarily want Capitano to come back as a playable character or in any particular form but I'd like that story to be continued in some way. He did trigger the paradox, I think? Would be lovely if it, well, did something (again, another bit of lore that looks promising but may not ever lead to anything. maybe the recent leyline disturbances are not actually connected to this)

I'm a bit fuzzy on what part of plot was the interlude. Healing abyssal corrosion? I think that was an attempt to feed us lore that we only had in side quests before. The Abyss mimic sovereign didn't bother me too much either, he seems just a hp sponge while the (fake) previous pyro archons talk to us and despair. I don't mind this type of storytelling in games. (perhaps my problem with Genshin lately is that I look at it and see mechanics and plot devices and their justification, not a living world or ideas I want to agree or argue with)

I think Natlan just generally had a lot of things that didn't land if you were not already into them. Like the choice between survival and preserving memory and legacy is an absolutely beautiful theme but it got mentioned twice in passing. Making the player attached to some part of Natlan culture (last remnants of a singing tradition, a precious relic, a patch of special flowers that allow a ritual of talking to a shadow of a dead loved one) and then making them to sacrifice it to progress the plot and save a character would have been more convincing (I guess the spiritstone was a bit like that?). The way it was presented was too abstract and got resolved too quickly (through a sparring match and a conversation), it's a choice that needs to be felt before it's made.

I sort of vibe with Capitano's stance as a person who currently seems to be on the losing side of history. The desire to save those you can still save, a certain cynicism that comes from knowing that simply being right is not enough, a hope that someone else might fare better than his country. But again, I don't think it's anything but implied and it's not what people discuss about him?

Mavuika repeating "no one fights alone" when she does everything alone herself should have probably made me feel something. Or being shown how no one is ever truly alone if they are part of a line of people following the same goal. Or how every single hero got their special name after they had to deal with something completely alone because that's what heroes do. The relationship of a hero and their nation and the paradox of loneliness and not-loneliness of this path is a beautiful story too. I really should have felt something. Somehow I didn't.

It's all a bit like Ayato with his child ninjas and Arlecchino with the House of Hearth. Both are essentially the same trope but HoH arc hits most people harder because it's spelled out rather than hinted at.

It could be argued that none of it is a story Hoyo wanted to tell but "good guys who are too awesome to have real interpersonal problems uniting to kick ass of a 100% evil guy" is, well, a story that deserves to be told but most of us got lured into genshin by morally grey husbandos, let's be realistic here.

It's strange to change the genre to shonen mid-game, yes, but generally Natlan feels half-baked more than it feels conceptually wrong.

My expectations were also extremely low, so maybe that's why I didn't mind.

I'm also making peace with the fact that it's not that writers are hiding lore from us, there is just no lore. They keep regurgitating the thing about fake sky and hope and dreams being able to counter the Abyss because that's all there is really. Everything else is flavour text and ass-pulls to make cool cinematics.

(Abyss is a Mysterious Evil Thing From Space and will remain such for the next 15 years, there's no beautiful paradox in Teyvat's foundation that created it. it's not a Japanese story for writers to be able to think like that.

this annoys me in the same way George Martin's books annoy me by almost being what I would want from a perfect story. it's more frustrating than a story that is just bad)

Hoyo writers are also extremely good at doing their homework and referencing Good Literature, so this is high quality flavour text and cinematics are indeed occasionally cool.

That said, I do hope that Capitano's action was the "good job breaking it, hero" trope. Would be kinda meh otherwise.

the idea gets to me.... bc like gangle is consoled in ep 4 by the fact that zooble cares about her. its a few things that help her but theres a reason the episode ends w that. the two care a lot but zooble is the one that looks more like they have things handled. but see im not so sure they do. they have their own deep problems, with the circus and themself, like all of them do, theyre just more active about their decisions. gangles struggles vary but having people around her who care helps. gangle has seen the circus before zooble. zooble has never seen the circus without gangle. the idea of gangle meeting someone and returning to a world without them hurts my heart. i like to think that she could manage, and that zooble abstracting wouldnt lead her down her own terrible spiral, because i think the ideas zooble would have impressed upon her could help her manage that loss. but gangles already struggling just in general. it could go either way

and like smth abt the idea of zooble specifically abstracting is haunting to me, bc of all of the cast members, they would be the only one to leave a physical part of themself behind. theyre able to move limbs that arent attached, but it seems like theres a system in place for these things- their head and body are the main constants and they can move detached things likely only at a specific distance or in a given time frame. they arent constant parts of the.. meaning that if they abstracted, theyd leave many many parts behind, something that doesnt seem like its always the case. even extra accessories in the rooms seem more for decoration- zoobles parts were a genuine part of them, so the idea that they genuinely left effectively a part of them behind when no one else can do this.... falls over

Regarding the previous post, I think the way I approach trying to evaluate a piece of art is asking "Do I think the positive things I get out of it outweigh the parts of it that I don't like?" And when I call something a "guilty pleasure" song/show/book/piece of media/etc. it's really more in the sense of, "Given who I am as a person, the flaws I've found in this should be complete dealbreakers for me, but somehow they aren't, and it makes me feel like I'm having an identity crisis."
