WHAT WAS THE NICHE 2020-2021 DNDADS DRAMA

GOD. sorry to leave everyone hanging on the 2020-2021 dndads drama I had to be a responsible college student but 2020-2021 dndads fandom was bizarre. anyways.

the basic gist was that there was this one server where a very significant portion of dndads fans were- a lot of writers, artists, regular Tumblr bloggers, and it was pretty chill! I met some very close friends there (literally) (they have PhDs in understanding glenn close) (hi guys <3) and it was great! there were a lot of silly headcanons happening (everyone think about dubsquared RIGHT NOW!!!) and people doing collaborative work and making cool art and fics and all that! And then sometime around June 2020, people started having problems with dndads.

if I'm recalling correctly, the main issues people had with it were the lack of women (which like, fair, but also if you're looking for groundbreaking earth shattering female characters then maybe a podcast focused on father-son relationships isn't your best bet?) and that they felt the fandom/show wasn't a safe place for kids (mostly since their patreon server didn't have a set way to check people's ages) (which, again, is a fair point! but also 1: that's because it's a show FOR adults, and 2: is not entirely on the cast to manage? or at least, not an easy thing to regulate). From there, people started coming up with more and more convoluted and nitpicky issues with the show (I think the weirdest ones I saw was that there were sex jokes in a podcast that kids listened to, which like....it is an adult podcast....for adults...)(and also the person who complained that Anthony had them call him daddy. on their dad podcast) and it all kinda spiraled out of control and there was a period of time when the dndads Tumblr tag was very prominently people hating on it whether it was warranted or not. The server is pretty dead now but it was a crazy time. it also sucked really bad and I think people should have just calmed down <3
