1: actor eddie x publicist steve where eddie is notoriously obnoxious at every public appearance in an effort to self sabotage to the point of not having to attend them anymore vs pr industry famous publicist steve whose whole schtick is somehow having his clients so whipped that when he tells them not to embarrass him they have no choice but to obey.

eddie doesn't even realize it's happened until he's being interviewed on a red carpet and he thanks the interviewer before he leaves.

and 2, the polar opposite: actor eddie whose publicist is now out of a job bc his new pop star singer boyfriend has him so wrapped around his finger he wouldn't dare embarrass him and therefore has wiped his public image squeaky clean without attending a single nda meeting

Summary: Janus had an argument with Virgil and goes to Logan to cool off.

The door to Logan’s room burst open without warning.

“Ridiculous! Completely ridiculous!” Janus grumbled, walking in and closing the door behind him none too gently. Logan raised his eyebrows and closed the book he had been engrossed in until a few seconds ago – after marking his spot of course.

“What happened, love?” he asked, concerned. Janus simply huffed, shaking his head.

“Virgil just- ugh.” He walked over to his boyfriend, throwing himself next to him and placing his head in Logan’s lap after discarding his hat. Familiar with Janus’ non-verbal way of asking for comfort, Logan began gently running his fingers through his boyfriend’s hair and carefully untangling the knots he found. Janus sighed in content, shoulders already losing some tension.

“Thank you, darling.”

“It is my pleasure. Would you like to stay like this in silence for a while or do you want to talk about your issue?”

“Your pragmatism is appreciated. I think I need to vent for a moment. Let me finish before you offer any solutions?”

“Of course.”

“Thanks.” Janus took a deep breath and a moment to sort his thoughts. “I was assisting Thomas today, to keep his stress levels from rising, since, as we both know, he has been struggling with that recently. But Virgil wouldn’t let me work in peace. He hovered at my shoulder constantly, questioned everything I did or suggested and kept Thomas on edge all day. And when I asked him to back off a bit, he blew up on me, accusing me of trying to manipulate Thomas and having ulterior motives, which is why I was trying to get rid of him. Definitely what I was doing.” Janus rolled his eyes and Logan couldn’t help a fond smile appearing on his lips. He couldn’t help but find his boyfriend’s need for dramatics endearing.

“I know Virgil doesn’t trust me, and I get why, it’s a fair stance, I did some shitty stuff to him in the past, but I always had Thomas’ best interest in mind, even back then! How am I supposed to regain his trust if he is actively sabotaging everything I try to do to help!?”

“Are you now ready to hear my thoughts, or have you not finished?” Logan asked, patiently, after his boyfriend was quiet for a few seconds. Janus smiled at him, very grateful for his support.

“I mean, I could go on for at least an hour, but I think I got the point across, so it might be best you tell me what to do before I talk myself into a rage again,” he sighed. Logan nodded in understanding, after all, this has happened a few times already.

“I have a few questions for you first, if that is alright with you?”

“Sure.”

“Question One: How long has Virgil been with you today?”

“Most of the day. At least six to eight hours, I presume.”

“Alright. Question Two: How have you dealt with his criticism before asking him to leave?”

“I didn’t ask him to leave, just not to be… as involved.”

“Either way, what was your response before that point?”

“I either didn’t engage or explained to him my reasoning. Which he then mostly insulted in return.” Janus had closed his eyes at that point, solely focusing on the hands in his hair and the comfort they brought.

“I understand. So, you were patient with Virgil for hours and even offered him an opportunity to discuss your actions civilly?”

“Yes.”

“Well then, I’d first like to say that I’m proud of you for being so patient. I know the two of you have a hard time getting along on your best days. Related to that, I believe that Virgil is most likely more irritated than usual due to Thomas’ recent increase in obligations, which might have influenced his behavior today. Which is not to say he was justified in his reaction. If you would like, I could talk to him about activities to destress himself as well as Thomas.”

“I appreciate you wanting to help, dear, but I don’t think that would be very effective. He has accepted that we are dating but I think he believes I’m manipulating you as well if you take my side constantly to resolve arguments.”

“A fair point. Then may I suggest asking Patton for help, even if they are not on the best terms, I think having him as a mediator is a possible solution.”

Janus hummed, pushing his head more firmly into Logan’s hand. Sometimes Logan couldn’t help but think that a cat would fit his boyfriend better than a snake.

“I’ll think about it. Thank you, darling, I feel much better.”

“I am happy that I could assist you. Now, would you like to continue watching of The Good Place?”

“I would love to, as long as you keep your hand where it is.”

“Of course.”

“Wonderful.”

They fell asleep together not even an hour later with Logan’s hand still buried in Janus’ hair.

I’ve been reading Kirk/McCoy on and off for like 10 years now, and you - through your fic and this here blog - are like single handedly responsible for dragging me back into it this time around. I wondered about any head canons you had around Leonard’s childhood and teenage years. We at least get a glimpse of young Kirk and young Spock in the movies, but nothing for McCoy, and I’m very curious about your take.

Oh, I have plenty of thoughts around Leonard's youth, though I'm afraid it's hard to recall what's already made it into posted works and what's still buried in WIP drafts, so forgive me if I get a little slip-slidey. Some of this is semi-canonical, some I've just made up for Reasons, but I think it's all plausible enough!

1. Leonard grew up as the only son of a prominent family in the (fictional) small town of Marysville, GA.

Extended universe canon has it that his paternal grandfather was Chief of Medicine at Emory in Atlanta, which I think we can reasonably assume is still the top hospital in Georgia as of the 23rd century. And of course his father was a doctor as well. So he comes from a solid line of highly educated and successful professionals.

Leonard is semi-canonically from Atlanta himself, but I've gone ahead and rejected that, because no fucking way was that folksy-ass motherfucker (who is after all "just an old country doctor") born and raised in Atlanta proper. (Though it is also extremely funny to me to imagine him as some city asshole cosplaying as a hayseed for some mysterious reason, knowing damn well that no one else on the Enterprise knows enough about Georgia to catch him out.)

To reconcile this, I've decided that his mother's family was originally from [vague hand wave] some ways outside Savannah and that Eleanora didn't much care for city living, so after getting married, she and David moved to Marysville, where they were initially viewed with some suspicion as outsiders (and high-and-mighty city slickers, at that) but in time came to be accepted and respected as pillars of the community.

2. He was the only grandchild on his maternal side and spoiled rotten by his granny and granddaddy.

The family alternated holidays between David's parents in Atlanta and Eleanora's parents near Savannah, and while Leonard loved both sets of grandparents, he preferred being at his granddaddy and granny's place and often accompanied his mama on extended summer visits. The McCoys were kind but a bit more serious and reserved, with a beautiful home filled with lots of things little boys weren't allowed to touch. Much more fun to run around orchards sticking worms in his pockets and getting into mild mischief. It didn't hurt that Granny was a superb baker (and also known for her eggnog, as noted in pentimento).

Fun fact: it's his granny and granddaddy's home outside Savannah (which tends to get a lot of there-and-gone afternoon thunderstorms in the summer) where his childhood memories take place in sforzando.

3. He was a mama's boy.

He looked a lot more like his father and of course went on to follow in David's footsteps as a doctor, but personality-wise, he's much more like his mother, who shared a similar blend of fussing over her brood and low tolerance for bullshit.

4. He was raised up right. Theoretically.

Look, an attempt was made, okay? Someone - many someones - for sure gave that boy all the right home training. He's from two long lines of born and bred Georgians, and there is absolutely no way he wasn't rigorously trained in appropriate manners, decorum, and housekeeping. He even did cotillion classes, remember! (Jim definitely remembers. Jim will never, ever forget, nor let slip an opportunity to bring it up.)

So his elders tried. And as noted in pentimento, his parents did their best to work with him on his temper when he hit his teen years and started blossoming into the mouthy hothead we know and love. It's not his their fault he grew up into such an irascible old cuss who's apparently determined that the genteel passive aggression he grew up steeped in must sometimes be supplemented with full-on aggressive aggression.

I guess what I'm saying is, you can't blame his raising for why he's so Like That. That's sheer force of personality, baby. (I mean, aside from the part where he enjoys swanning in to inquire about his frenemy's troubles and drop a "helpful" and vaguely insulting pearl of wisdom before swanning back off to gossip about it with his bestie. That there's a Southern specialty.)

5. He was fairly popular growing up.

I recognize I may encounter some skepticism on this point, given the, uh, everything about the grown-up Leonard we know and love, but let's look at the facts.

He was from a good family, which goes pretty far in a town like Marysville.

He's exceptionally smart and hard-working as an adult, and given where he ended up career-wise, one can imagine he must have done well in school. I've even gone so far as to decide he skipped a couple grades at some point, though admittedly that was partly an effort to make sense of his timeline so that he could be a fully trained doctor by the time we meet him on the shuttle at 28.

So anyway, he was smart and a good student - but as Jim intuited in pas de deux, it wasn't the sort of disquieting freaky-smart that made baby Jimmy something of an outcast in his own small town. Leonard's was a more...palatable intelligence, let's say. And it helped that he was also a jock.

Yeah, you heard me. The extended universe indicates that baby Leonard dreamed of being a pro basketball player, and as an adult he is in suspiciously good shape for a man of science, so I went ahead and had him play basketball in middle and high school until a knee injury took him off the court for good.

So in summary: smart, good family, an athlete, well-mannered, and looks like young Karl Urban? Yeah, I'm pretty sure my guy did just fine among his peers, introversion/short fuse/social awkwardness be damned.

In fact, I'm looking forward to introducing you to some of those peers in the high school reunion fic! Assuming I can manage to finish it before the heat death of the universe!

🏩 - how does your f/o act when they're sick?

Depending on how sick he is depends on how long he will last, but Lightning spends the first hour or few of him being sick being "I'm completely fineee! It's just a few minor symptoms.." and then regaurdless of if the symptoms actually progress or not he completely crumbles and caves in and needs to be doted on. This happens regaurdless of how sick he is, even if it's just a runny nose and a headache with some sneezing he will eventually reach a point of pouting and claiming that he can't leave his bed(super effective on me, I will absolutely dote on him without hesitation). Though once he's better he normally ends up trying to bashfully deny ever acting in such a manner, or that anyone that was "that sick" would also have been in that state!

Jackson hardly ever gets sick, so he will completely refuse to believe he is sick until the very last minute or it reaches the point that he can't deny it anymore. He absolutely can not stand being sick though, and he will immediately go and take medicine and go through a cycle of really hot showers, hot foods, swaddling himself with heating things and blankets, and trying to sleep his way through the entire thing so he can just drive any of the sickness out of him as quick as possible. If anything I'm there to keep him from going overboard and roasting himself alive(especially if he's already running a fever) and keeping him from driving himself mad. Being sick already sucks, don't need to be sick and upset on top of it!

🧶 - other than their main hobby/career, what other sorts of things do they like to do?

I think I mentioned this before in like the biggest tangent ever, I can't remember what prompted it, funnily enough I think it mightve been in responce to something you asked as well, haha!! But Lightning actually really loves dinosaurs and going to museums and just getting to infodump a bunch. He will hardly turn down a challenge to things and likes to push himself and can be a bit competitive(some times a little less playfully than others), but he has moments of totally just wanting to kick his feet up and relax, watch some documentaries or to just let himself doze off.

Jackson is often understimulated most of the time and has trouble finding things that don't leave him feeling bored or empty/unsatisfied, and it's partly why he sticks to games, or moreso one racing simulator game in part because it was one of the few things that he actually enjoyed as was good at. He keeps himself very reserved, and even something as simple as just finding out what he enjoys is something he keeps close to his chest, but truthfully I think he kinda enjoys and prefers to getting to kinda be more of a tag-along in things, or at least, he does with me. That way if he's bored he can engage as much as he'd like, and if it's too overwhelming for him he can seperate himself or just leave whenever he wants. There's a little bit more to it than that because he can at least be open about it with me(even if he doesn't have the nerve to be very direct about it, believe it or not) and it's not perfect in every situation, but it's easier for him to just be on the sidelines and commentate or be an observer. He definitely has a fondness for techno/digital stuff like video games and LED lights in rooms and RGB keyboards and lights in gaming computers, etc., and he enjoys rediculous(/positive) tehcno/electro dubstep sorts of music. I'd be impressed if you caught him listening to anything else. I don't think he ever really got the chance to explore himself or his interests or what he'd be interested in very much in the first place, so it's really nice to kinda get to explore that with him and find out :)

So here's the thing: I'd never written a multi-fic series before pverse. I didn't mean to this time, either! I wrote palimpsest, and for reasons I'm sure you now understand I simultaneously started writing anagnorisis as a companion piece, and I thought at the time that those two would be it. But then I had readers asking me a bunch of questions, and my answers had a funny way of transmogrifying from long-winded Tumblr responses into full-blown fics, and then I’d get MORE questions, and all of a sudden I had a verse on my hands.

Anyway, it was while writing anagnorisis that I realized I needed a prequel to fully unpack how Jim and Leonard's relationship transformed over time. And then, in trying to tackle THAT story, I realized I needed a prequel to the prequel to fully unpack Jim's journey pre-Academy in order to understand his starting point when he and Leonard meet, since his evolving character arc is such a key driver of the gradual change in their dynamic.

So when I talk about “Jim’s prequel,” I’m often conflating two separate Jim POV WIPs: a solo piece that follows Jim from elementary school until the day he joins Starfleet, and then the follow-up to that, which is very much a McKirk-centered story that takes us from the Academy up to the events of palimpsest and beyond.
