Fic Snippet Friday

Here’s a Triplet fic snippet. The babies are now 3 months old.

“Divide and conquer.” Alex says, and Henry nods. For as chatty as he is, on days like these, Alex is only capable of short, directive sentences. He picks up the screaming infant in one hand and a baby wrap in the other.

Henry helps him get Matteo situated in the soft cotton sling and tie it off on the end. Then father and son head outside while Henry and Ellen get the other two babies to sleep. It only takes twenty-seven minutes this time. A new record.

When Henry gets back to the living room, he looks out the window and sees Alex standing in their yard, eyes closed, still bouncing a now quiet Matteo in a baby carrier. Henry grabs a bottle of water and a snack and joins his husband.

Alex looks around when he hears the door open. He smiles softly, but then he sees the water and his eyes grow bright with unshed tears. He nods frantically and Henry holds the bottle up for him to drink. Then Alex angles his head toward Henry and kisses him. Henry offers up a protein bar and Alex practically melts in the late summer sun. He finishes the bar in two bites.

“Thank you,” Alex whispers, “I don’t think I’ve eaten today.”

Henry kisses the side of his head and lays a hand on the swaddled bundle in front of him.

“This will get easier,” Alex says, a little desperately, “right?”

Henry nods and unwraps a second protein bar. Alex takes a bite and sighs. He stops bouncing, leaning against his husband, and Matteo immediately starts fussing. Alex stands straight up again and sheds a few tears himself.

Henry wants to help. He wants to trade places with Alex, but he knows better by now. He knows attempting to switch parents at this point in the process will only undo the last forty-two minutes of work, so instead, Henry stands with Alex, holding his hand, rubbing his back, for as long as it takes. When Matteo is truly and fully asleep, they slowly walk back inside together.
