She turned angrily towards a girl around her age, they asked why she became a Demon Slayer. “I became a Demon Slayer for one reason… For my friend.” She turned back to where she was originally facing. 

She tried calming herself but was asked by the other, “What friend? You mention having one but they aren’t here. Are they a demon you’re hiding? You know it’s acceptable to-”

“THEY AREN’T A DEMON!” She screamed, tears falling from her eyes. The other stood shocked, it wasn’t uncommon for her to get angry but it was different this time… “My friend she… She was turned into a demon- attacked our village… Whoever this new Muzan is is awful just like they said the last one was!”

“... Why didn’t you take her with you? I’m sure Kamado would’ve helped you-..”

“Because I killed her.” She finished and started walking away into the forest to continue their mission….

Personality: Kiko is a hotheaded with a small softspot. She tends to lash out and get angry quickly, something she’s always done but she can never bring herself to attack out of anger. She gets scared hurting people, demons are a similar case until recently. Her soft spot comes from her caring nature of living in such a welcoming village and being a farmer. She actually shows her softside a lot, it’s just unbelievable.  

Backstory: Kiko Fukuda, born in a small village working as a farmer. She lived with only her dad, a kind fellow who’s always been helpful and caring. Her mother died shortly after Kiko was born, so she taken care of her father as an only child. A small village meant very little people meaning Kiko didn’t make many friends, she was chill with most but no one was around her age. Except one person… Kokoro Akemi. A girl her age, a lovely and swet girl always looking out for everyone. She was loved by the village and was considered the sweetest girl to ever exist! Kokoro and Kiko were the closets of friends, childhood bestfriends that could never be seperated!

That was… Until sunset, a beautiful but cold sunset. Kiko was staying up late to watch over the farm and saw a figure walking along the path. They were confused, why would someone be up this late? They were almost limbing like an old person, she thought. Moving closer she noticed something… That pink haori with white snowflakes, long black hair with a flower crown made by Kiko that same day- it was Kokoro. Kokoro was different- why.. Why did she have blood on her?! Her Haori, hands, kimono, face and hair. She called out for her and they turned sharpely at her, hissing. Teeth sharp and pointy, eyes like a cats and… No, This wasn’t Kokoro Akemi.

It was to late, by the time Kiko noticed they lunged towards her. However, Kiko had enough time to grab a hoe and whack them right across the head. Kokoro rolled back to the side but quickly got up and grabbed Kiko’s face, scratching her right face open. Kiko, this time, smashed into Kokoro’s head so hard the hoe was threw her skull out the other end. They froze, the demon couldn’t move anymore and Kiko was furious. This wasn’t Kokoro… It coudn’t be- it must’ve been a shapeshifter or a ghost! 

The sun rose, and she started burning. Yet, Kiko still furious she felt saddness, she didn’t know why- it wasn’t like she killed the actual Kokoro, right? Still, she dropped the weapon and the demon fell down like a lifeless corpse. She heard a voice of pity behind her, she wiped her head around it revealed someone in a uniform with a green, checkered haori. Kiko shouted at them and they apologized before introducing themselves as Hinata Kamado. They were part of the Demon Slayer Corps and fought bad demons. She asked if who she just killed was really Kokoro. Hinata nodded and said yes. Kiko was a lot of things in that moment, angry, sad, heartbroken and horrified. She just brutally killed her own friend just because they became a demon how could she… Her best friend…

Hinata offered her comfort and explained it wasn’t her fault, the new Muzan had transformed her into this demon. He offered her a choice, learn about the truth, the truth behind everything buried in history and a chance to avednge her friend; or she stays here and heal from everything that has happened. Kiko, without hesitation, joined the Demon Slayer Corps...

i got a second cat carrier this morning because i panicked about the fact that both my cats are sick AND they cannot fit in the cat carrier i have together anymore.

the new case is both too small for either of them (they fit but it looks like they probably can't get up and turn around if i close them in tho Merlin fits better so it will probably be his case) but both of them have of their own free will gotten in and sat in it while it was just sitting on the floor. so maybe it's fine for trips to the vet. it's a softsided case with a fleece lining as opposed to my hardsided case.

Tasting Notes

I was semi-prepared. I threw in some new records, brought my softside bag with more records in it, and showed up more or less on time. Elevator worked, so I rolled to the booth and set myself up. I usually start with something loud and declaratory, but this time I wanted to ease into the set with dynamics and subtlety. The "Joan Of Arc" 12" from Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark is usually slotted deeper in the set, but I liked hearing it front and center.

I goosed the tempo with the Kylie mashup, and followed that with Foxy, the Cuban-American soul disco band. The TK Records 45RPM 12" kicks so hard that Jules had to come up and turn the mains down because it was so loud in the front. It's hard to tell from the booth what the volume is in various parts of the space. Some places it's loud, and in other parts it's low. The booth is in a "dead" spot. It's not bad, it just takes tweaking. I'm there to cut through the noise, not to be noise.

Jules is back up during the Third World 12" to bring the volume up again. She asked me if different records sound different, or are recorded differently. It's a great question, one that I consider all the time during the acquisition phase. Some records jump off the turntable, and some records sound dead. I'm always on the hunt for 45RPM 12" cuts, but depending on when you play them, what records surround them in the set, how many people there are in the bar, and any number of other variances, things can fall flat. I've had things fall flat during some sets that were bangers in previous sets. And, a lot of it is timing – whoever is there listening, their energy also contributes to the vibe. I watch Tavis behind the bar; if I can get him moving, then I know I'm onto something.

Someone came to me early in the set to see what I was all about, and when I told him I only played vinyl, he said "Oh, you play '80s stuff." Which made me immediately put something from the '70s on, and follow it up with a contemporary track. Who says I don't take requests?  I got more contemporary artists mixed in tonight: Billy Nomates, Orbital, Ari Lennox. And I like to throw reggae records into the flow freestanding, and not in blocks of reggae records. They have such a great sound for sound systems. Tailor made for it. I could never cut it as a genre DJ. It just doesn't interest me. I love music in its totality. And the things I don't love? I just leave them out. 

My methodology, such as it is, is half improv, half improbability. I don't just play what I like, but I like what I play. I play music I can respond to. I feel at home in the Spacebar, so I play music that you would hear if I were playing music for a party in my home. I'm not there to be the show, but to play my part in the show. I didn't play the Bad Brains, Judas Priest and the Clipse to show how smart I am, I played it because I thought it would sound good. And it did. And it helped the rest of the set gel. I was having a hard time finding my footing early on. It wasn't bad, I just felt tentative, sticking with things I knew. I don't construct set lists beforehand, although I do choose records for the crate that I think will work, and build it up from there. It is a limitation, but limitations are not a bad thing. I am employed to construct a vibe, and while I am averse to taking requests, I do like it when people ask for things like Prince. That got them the long version of Appolonia 6, and later on, the first Prince record I ever bought, "I Wanna Be Your Lover." I heard that on the radio in 1978, and instantly became a fan of the man. DJ IGA says that "Sex Shooter" is the hallmark Mossback record.

The three crowds that rotated through the bar this night were odd. I guess I was spoiled by the Rollergirls showing up the previous two Saturdays I played. Those folks bring an energy to the proceedings!

I was trying to get to 2 a.m., but I fell short and ended the night on the Herb Alpert, "Rise" 12" I got out of the used bins at the Record Exchange. Cheap. I was struck again at the marriage of that jam that Diddy looped for B.I.G. It's genius. And something to aspire to. There's a lot out there, if you are open to hearing it.

It had been ages since Macaque first opened this Orphanage, and by ages it had been literal centuries.

As they all were getting older, MK and Bai He had suggested it to him. They saw how much he loved kids and was good with them. Even other than themselves, and so after much deliberation… and a couple bits of encouragement from pretty much everyone and even Wukong, well he decided to set one up.

Demon, Human, Celestial, Macaque took in all of them and everyone in that orphanage knew they were safe thanks to Macaque if Macaque heard crying well… he would pop out of a shadow in an attempt to soothe them, Pigsy and Tang would help him when he first opened it up. Storytimes were portrayed by shadow plays or by Wukong or MK or Mei coming and talking about their journeys and adventures.

And well, even when a kid left the Orphanage after becoming an adult or being adopted, he would still keep an eye out for them. After all, his shadows do allow him to travel anywhere in minutes. And when a kid got adopte d Macaque had a record on who by and where to, so it was easy to check on them. Sometimes old kids came back as adults to visit or help out, it was always nice to see them again.

But if you were a member of the orphanage you were safe for life, you had a stone Monkie protector who could move through and use shadows, and could hear the past, present, and future thanks to his six ears.

So when a Macaque heard the crying of multiple kids with, “No! Don’t take me! Mr. Macaque! Help!”

And Macaque was instantly in the room with them and then he encountered the cause of the kids' screams.

“Quick nab them. No one’s going to miss them-hey why’s that one smiling now?”

The kid, who was now smiling after noticing Macaque, said, “You done fucked up.”

“What-?”

Macaque then spoke up, “Kai, Language.”

The two kidnappers jumped and looked behind them.

“Now what kind of dipshit cowards are you? Kidnapping kids for Buddah knows what nefarious purpose because you think no one cares about them?”

“N-No! We were just looking to see which ones we wanted to adopt-”

“Bullshit. Thats a lie and we both know it,” Macaque laughs, “Too bad for you, this orphan is run by the Six-Eared Macaque. I didn’t call myself the warrior for nothing. And these kids are under my protection.”

He dropped the glamour over his eye as his eye and scar glowed purple as shadows flooded the room, hiding the kids from the kidnappers' sight, as he summoned his giant shadow.

And with a swift few swipes he took care of those kidnappers. Killing them and then using his shadows to transport them outside of the orphanage a fair distance away so the kids wouldn’t have to see them.

After he took care of them he turned back to the kids, “Are you all alright?”

“Yeah now that you’re here!”

“Thank you Mr. Macaque!!”

“You saved us!”

“Of course, you’re all under my protection and I care about all of you.”

“Mr. Macaque! Your scar is so cool!!! Why don’t you show it more?”

Macaque laughs, “Its better to use it as a threat. Scares people into knowing they screwed up.”

“I’ll admit, it’s pretty threatening,” called a voice from the window, “I knew you had a softside.”

Macaque sighed, “Hello to you too, Wukong, suprised you didn’t show up sooner.”

“Well I was gonna but I had to bury the bodies!”
