“Here’s my idea,” said Team Leader Rabbit. “We’ll take Director Tigger on a long debugging session in the Hundred Acre Codebase, to some module he’s never seen before, and we’ll lose him there. And when we find him again he’ll be a different Tigger altogether. He’ll be a humble Tigger, an ‘I see you have important work to do’ Tigger, an ‘I’ll leave you to it, then’ Tigger, and he’ll excuse us from staff meetings.”
So Rabbit (and co-workers Pooh and Piglet) led Tigger deep into the legacy device drivers, through undocumented, self-modifying spaghetti code that had lain untouched since 1991.
“It’s a funny thing,” said Rabbit ten minutes later, “how every subroutine looks the same in the kernel debugger. Have you noticed it, Pooh?”
Pooh said that he had.
But Tigger, who hadn’t touched code in over a decade, bounced gleefully from one thread to another. “Look!” he hooted. “I found a memory leak!”
“It’s lucky we know the codebase so well,” said Rabbit half an hour later, “or else we might get lost.” And he laughed the careless laugh of a software engineer who never gets lost.
“The fact is,” said Rabbit an hour later, “we’ve missed our breakpoint somehow. I think we’d better reboot the emulator.”
“No,” said Tigger. “I wrote this module myself, when I was an intern. All we have to do is patch the stack frame and NOP out this RET, and it’s bound to fall through into the scheduler eventually.” He turned to Rabbit. “I may be awhile. In my absence, you go ahead and run the staff meeting.”
