The thing about the time lords is yeah they’re a super powerful species, it wouldn’t be all that inaccurate to call them gods of time, but you get yourself a time lord and like 70% of the time it’s like oh this is a guy I could kick in the shins really hard and get away with it unscathed

Can I just say, I really appreciate how Critical Role plays the Devil trope straight. There's been this phenomena in a lot of modern media (I'm not going to mention specifics but I'm sure a few examples pop up in people's minds) where Hell and the Devil aren't scary or malevolent forces. Hell is portrayed as being basically the same as our world just "edgier", and the Devil is a pretty decent guy actually. Heaven are secretly the real bad guys!

But Critical Role doesn't do that. In Exandria, Asmodeus *feels* like the Devil. He's malevolent and manipulative and terrifyingly powerful and he hates you, personally. We never see that type of portrayal anymore! And it's amazing! And he still manages to be sympathetic and tragic without losing his edge!

And the "Good Gods" are portrayed as flawed without being secretly evil or something! Like, actual nuance? In my Heaven/Hell dichotomy? What!?

It's just such a breath of fresh air after so many "The Devil was right, actually" stories. So props to Matt and Brennan and the cast.

Danny Fenton, aka Phantom, has been given a new task!

In short, literally no one in the Ghost Zone/Infinite Realms wants their mostly peaceful afterlife to be rocked by a certain Gotham rogue named Joker. Which, when he dies, is almost sure to happen because of whatever the hell was in that vat he dropped in included ectoplasm. So, yay, he’s also a little ghostly too, meaning he *is* pretty hard to kill. Unfortunately, there’s also a certain vigilante that is quite keen to murder him in recent years.

So now Danny has to keep the mass murderer trauma clown alive for as long as he possibly can while attempting to keep the Joker from. Well. Being the Joker.

Oh, and naturally, Danny got this assignment AFTER Joker got out of Arkham. Again. And entirely blew up the asylum. Time to join the Goonion, he is NOT doing this without getting PAID, thank you.

I'm deeply entrenched in Realm of the Elderlings chaotic brainrot, having almost finished Fool's Fate (still one hour left to listen to and I keep dragging it out because I'm not ready). So to soothe The Traumas™️, I've been doodling the Fool and noting down silly scenes that make me laugh both with and at myself. I apologise in advance.

The colours aren’t right for the first doodle but I don’t have a white posca pen 🥲 Second sketch is based on a bust of some 18th century noble who had wonderful aristocratic features I had to borrow for Lord Golden.

why was one of your main characters that you took time to slowly let us learn more about throughout the series, who resonated with people and whose life seems inspired by modern veterans, of which your own dad was one, who notably survived the story (evading dead mentor trope) and found relative peace & quiet in the end,,, expendable for your stupid gimmick to make blatant retconning seem punchy and thoughtful? did someone on your team convince you that would be cool? it's not cool. it's really lame and reveals how little you care about the character. like did she roll her eyes at the people begging for a Haymitch prequel? like, ugh why him? I'm gonna make everyone in his own backstory more interesting and have more agency than him. and he won't be funny, either.

literally…like man you put in work on this character for three books and when it’s his time to shine this is the result? it’s so lame and idk. take pride in your characters. take pride in your work. maybe it’s just my approach but you should not be so easily swayed by others’ opinions about your writing that your work turns mediocre to please them

Your blog is the only blog where I feel safe enough asking this question. What do you think of Percy Jackson fans who feel as though they and the series have a moral superiority to Harty Potter ? Obviously, Harry Potter and its author are laden with questionable and sometimes straight-up hateful takes and views. But the way PJO fans constantly compare the two, its authors (even though RR is far from flawless), and the two MCs (ignoring how the two both share similarities in the fact that they are both traumatised, abused, angry teenage boys). I'm sorry that this ask got so long, but this has been annoying me for a while now.

This is an interesting question - for one, fandom fights over superiority is a concept that has been around for ages and has never been constructive. PJO and HP fandoms have been fighting in that exact way (and it has gone both ways!) for literal decades (remember, PJO turns 20 this year) so this isn't new, it's just taken on a moral flavor. Let's go over some things though (but please keep in mind i never got into HP and never read the books or fully watched the movies so my knowledge of HP is primarily pop culture absorption/secondhand from my family and friends):

Are either series perfect? No. HP absolutely is full of hateful sentiments and JKR is a hateful person and I do not respect her for that. Disney's marketing recently has absolutely fully leaned into trying to put Rick above her as a moral paragon and emphasizing how progressive he is and his support of diversity in middle grade series, despite some failings to reflect that in the actual text. Are Rick and JKR equally bad? Definitely not. Rick has had tangible good influence on adhd/dyslexia awareness that very directly impacted people like me as a neurodivergent kid going through school in the 2000s. JKR meanwhile has directly negatively impacted trans laws internationally very recently.

Rick absolutely isn't perfect, but he's vocally supportive, has made a lot of effort in the past to be inclusive, and still attempts to do so. Most of his issues simply stem from his own unaddressed internalized bigotry/biases and his research on varying topics not being great (plus poor management decisions such as not hiring a sensitivity reader actually fit for the story he's trying to tell). But he's not hateful. JKR is. JKR is very vocally hateful and bigoted and this is absolutely reflected in her work as well even in earlier HP. They are comparable in that they are both middle grade authors of easily two of the most popular middle grade fantasy (or specifically hidden world fantasy) series out right now. They are not equivalent in the slightest in their bigotry or tangible damage.

In terms of Percy versus Harry, I personally don't think they're very comparable. They share some similarities, but mostly just in that they're both the protagonists of their stories and thus serve protagonist purposes. Beyond that their use within the narrative is pretty different functionally. Their worlds' magic systems are not comparable. The hidden world aspect in both their universes isn't even comparable, since in PJO the "hidden world" aspect is very different from most hidden world fantasy formats because the entire point is that it's functionally not a hidden world. The characters themselves are very different as well - Percy's personality and the way he behaves and reacts to his environment is absolutely nothing like Harry's.

Most of the anti-HP-in-general sentiments stem from wanting to cut off JKR's notoriety, which I think is valid to want to do. And I do think there are a lot of issues with continuing to support JKR's work especially in ways that functionally promote her work or support her financially. Obviously, we will never be able to scrub HP from the cultural zeitgeist. It's just not feasible and I'm very anti-book burning so I do think it's important to acknowledge the role HP has had in pop-culture alongside acknowledging its harmful materials. HP is a text you absolutely can't death-of-the-author your way out of because a lot of the vitriol is baked into the text and worldbuilding in very overt ways - and there are plenty of other pop-culture staple novels like this. But fandom in general, at least true fandom and not mainstream fandom, is so obscure most of the time that I don't think, so long as people are not ignoring negative themes of the source material and are being thoughtful as they navigate engaging with it, that it is an inherently bad thing for HP fandom to just exist at all. It's never going to just stop existing no matter what people do. And HP fandom are not the only ones who should be thoughtful about how they engage with their source material - PJO fandom is not exempt from examining some of the problematic aspects in our own text and figuring out how to be respectful with those topics. It's just a lot easier for PJO fandom to tune it out without it being noticed because there's less of it and it's (at least sometimes) less overt. Honestly if HP fandom decided to go more down the path of a fandom like Warriors or Miraculous Ladybug, where the average sentiment is more along the lines of "Oh god no don't read/watch the source material it sucks/we stopped paying attention to it year ago and it's not relevant at all to what we're up to. We're over here functionally rewriting everything from the ground up/doing our own thing" I would very much support them in that endeavor. I do think there is merit in limiting promotion of the HP source material as much as possible, though.

Hopefully that all makes at least some amount of sense.

hey. so. the well was absolutely gobsmackingly like. i have no words. but so many. oh my dear god. big day for annoying people (midnight & ten truthers (…me…)). the music. the ten-isms from fifteen. i was so nervous and scared i was full body shaking genuinely. coming out of the well… laughing…. ok pantheon??? i don’t even… the flashback to midnight specifically also like girl hello tv show! mrs flood at the end in a star trek ass outfit (not really but yk) like GIRL NOOO SHE KNOWS SHES GONNA KEEP STOPPING THEM AND MAKE IT SO THEY NEVER COME BACK TO A PLANET THAT DOESNT EXIST???? this episode had it all. rtd loves to self reference. the thing on the back was so turn left and it was interesting how that was incorporated/expanded into midnight because not that they did go behind her but it was a tight enclosed space so i enjoyed that aspect of it very much. also was giving me the satan two parter w ten and rose just bc of the well tbh i don’t trust mining planets in doctor who …. and also the earth not existing anymore is giving the stolen earth/journeys end but also the preview for the next episode is like ruby’s back (WITH A BOYFRIEND… let her date women goddamn belinda and her gots to meet stat) but i would assume they can’t get back to earth for the entire time till may 24th? something fishy is going on and some fuckery is going to happen majorly next episode 110% i wont be trusting a single thing.

okay y'all can make fun of me for this if you want but i had a dream last night

and i woke up wanting to CRY.

that i was basically in a fantasy novel with a whole adventuring party and everything, and myself and one of the other party members were very in love, but the problem was that this guy was basically the equivalent of a fire genasi from dnd (except he looked nothing like that) and he was quite literally extremely hot to the touch (like, painfully so) and at one point we were having a sweet moment and he tried to place his hand on my cheek but it burned me, and he felt so bad about it and very sadly said "If I loved you less, perhaps I could touch you more."

implying that the heat he gave off was amplified by how much he loved me.

Dude like Rhysand is a douchebag for sure but wrapped up in his mysoginist/jerky language he seems way more respectful of Feyre than Tamlin is.

Like he’s always like oh yeah? You don’t like that? You don’t like what I did? Here’s the tools to fight me. Now fight me. Everything he does that’s super douchebaggy seems to come with a taunt, like “I see in you an equal who can best me. I’m poking at you to make you fight back the way I know you can”

Whereas Tamlin is…idk the crappy stereotype of the “nice guy” that’s “so loving” but wants to just hide her away and shelter her and not trust her to protect herself or even have the knowledge of what’s going on in the world at large.

I kinda hate Tamlin and like Rhysand and I’m pretty sure that’s not what the author wants me to think lol
