In Defense of Shitty Queer Art

Queer art has a long history of being censored and sidelined. In 1895, Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray was used as evidence in the author’s sodomy trials. From the 1930s to the 1960s, the American Hays Code prohibited depictions of queerness in film, defining it as “sex perversion.” In 2020, the book Steven Universe: End of an Era by Chris McDonnell confirmed that Rebecca Sugar’s insistence on including a sapphic wedding in the show is what triggered its cancellation by Cartoon Network. According to the American Library Association, of the top ten most challenged books in 2023, seven were targeted for their queer content. Across time, place, and medium, queer art has been ruthlessly targeted by censors and protesters, and at times it seems there might be no end in sight.

So why, then, are queer spaces so viciously critical of queer art?

Name any piece of moderately-well-known queer media, and you can find immense, vitriolic discourse surrounding it. Audiences debate whether queer media is good representation, bad representation, or whether it’s otherwise too problematic to engage with. Artists are picked apart under a microscope to make sure their morals are pure enough and their identities queer enough. Every minor fault—real or perceived—is compiled in discourse dossiers and spread around online. Lines are drawn, and callout posts are made against those who get too close to “problematic art.”

Modern examples abound, such as the TV show Steven Universe, the video game Dream Daddy, or the webcomic Boyfriends, but it’s far from a new phenomenon. In his book Hi Honey, I’m Homo!, queer pop culture analyst Matt Baume writes about an example from the 1970s, where the ABC sitcom titled Soap was protested by homophobes and queer audiences alike—before a single episode of the show ever aired. Audiences didn’t wait to actually watch the show before passing judgment and writing protest letters.

After so many years starved for positive representation, it’s understandable for queer audiences to crave depictions where we’re treated well. It’s exhausting to only ever see the same tired gay tropes and subtext, and queer audiences deserve more. Yet the way to more, better, varied representation is not to insist on perfection. The pursuit of perfection is poison in art, and it’s no different when that art happens to be queer.

When the pool of queer art is so limited, it feels horrible when a piece of queer art doesn’t live up to expectations. Even if the representation is technically good, it’s disappointing to get excited for a queer story only for that story to underwhelm and frustrate you.

But the world needs that disappointing art. It needs mediocre art. It even needs the bad art. The world needs to reach a point where queer artists can fearlessly make a mess, because if queer artists can only strive for perfection, the less art they can make. They may eventually produce a masterpiece, but a single masterpiece is still a drop in the bucket compared to the oceans of censorship. The only way to drown out bigotry and offensive stereotypes created by bigots is to allow queer artists the ability to experiment, learn through making mistakes, and represent their queer truth even if it clashes with someone else’s.

If queer artists aren’t allowed to make garbage, we can never make those masterpieces everyone craves. If queer artists are terrified at all times that their art will be targeted both by bigots and their own queer communities, queer art cannot thrive.

Let queer artists make shitty art. Let allies to queer people try their hand at representation, even if they miss the mark. Let queer art be messy, and let the artists screw up without fear of overblown retribution.

It’s the only way we’ll ever get more queer art.

Bob was a bookworm. To probably no one’s surprise, he’d been a voracious reader from the time he was still learning his ABC’s on Sesame Street. He was always the kid reading under the covers with a flashlight past his bedtime, annoying his teachers by finishing novels weeks ahead of the class schedule, crashing into light posts and trees because he just couldn’t take his nose out of his book. Hell, sometimes Phoenix had to grab a book out of his hand and stuff it in her purse in the middle of the Hard Deck bar because he’d missed his turn at pool. The man simply loved to read.

But somehow, that wasn’t the reason he spent so much time at the bookshop he was standing in on this drizzly Saturday morning. No, that would be the pretty pair of eyes that followed him from the cash register, the ones that always seemed to sparkle a bit brighter when the little ringing bell announced his arrival.

Normally, Bob liked to come in by himself, so he could quietly gaze at you while you shelved books or helped other customers, customers who weren’t rendered speechless by simply standing too close to you. It was a smidge ridiculous, he admitted to himself. He was in the Navy, a TOPGUN graduate, someone who, despite his bashful appearance, didn’t shy away from danger. But oh, he definitely shied away from the cute bookstore owner who smiled despite his fumbled one-word answers to the questions you asked about the books he bought. Those embarrassingly one-sided conversations were the highlight of his day. His week, really. Just the two of you in the quiet of your cozy little shop.

But no, not today. Today, Bradshaw just had to tag along. “Nothin' better to do,” his buddy had mumbled with a nonchalant shrug when Bob asked if he was sure he wanted to come to the bookstore.

Now, Rooster snuck up behind Bob, who was craning his neck around a bookshelf to get a glimpse of you, still managing to look cute despite the bored look on your face as you counted change in the register.

“Guess now we know why you’re in here all the damn time,” he teased, loud enough to make Bob’s cheeks burn red as he prayed you didn’t hear. “Reading three books a week, my ass.”

Bob let out a little huff as he turned towards Rooster, gritting his teeth. “Lower your voice,” he hissed.

“Why?” Rooster continued, his smirk growing when he saw how he was getting under his friend’s increasingly blushing skin. His eyes flickered to you before he called out, “Hey, honey? This ain’t a library, is it? Do I have to watch my volume?”

Your playful eyes flickered to Bob before settling on Rooster’s smug face. “Normally I’d say no need,” you started slowly. “But if you’re bugging my favorite customer there, I might just need to adopt a noise level policy.”

Favorite customer. The two little words danced in Bob’s ears, which were currently a deep shade of red. Despite the fact that he was here every Saturday morning like clockwork- and sometimes more than that if he could manage- and the fact that you always tried to engage him in conversation at the register, Bob hadn’t quite been sure you knew he existed until this moment. He’d been so sure he was just another customer, someone who blended in with every other person who walked through your door. Surely, you had plenty of customers who flirted with you; how was he, with his monosyllabic responses, supposed to stand out?

Still, there you were, smiling at him as Rooster clapped a hand on his shoulder and gave him a little shove. Bob stumbled forward, clutching the book he’d been carrying around, and approached your little counter.

He adjusted his glasses as he laid the book down in front of you. “Just this one today,” he murmured, barely loud enough for you to hear.

But you were used to his quietness. You liked it. “That’s one of my favorites,” you mused as you took your time finding the bar code that you could’ve found in your sleep. “You’ll have to tell me what you think.”

He nodded absently, his hands fidgeting on the countertop while he watched you scan the book. “Sure.” With a glance over his shoulder, he met Rooster’s eyes; his friend held his hands up, urging Bob to say something, anything, else. “Am I really your favorite customer?” he blurted out.

The small chuckle you breathed out made his heart skip a beat. “Well, one of my favorites,” you corrected, teasing dripping from your voice. “There’s also this dog that comes in with his elderly owner all the time, and this little toddler whose mom had brought her in since she was just a few months old.” Something sparkled in your eyes as you leaned forward on the counter and slid the book towards him. “But you’re definitely in the top three.”

“What’s he have to do to take first place?” Bob didn’t notice Rooster slink over to the register, but now one of those heavy arms slung over his shoulders. “Help a guy out,” he added with a wink.

Was Rooster flirting with you for him? Bob wondered with a wince. This was certainly a new low.

If you thought Rooster’s intervention was lame, you didn’t show it. In fact, your gaze remained firmly on Bob, although your words were in response to Rooster’s question. “How can he take first place,” you repeated with a small hum. “Maybe by asking for my number?” The smile you flashed Bob would have been enough to bring a man back from the brink of death. “Himself, though. No help from the peanut gallery.”

The air caught in Bob’s throat mid-breath. Sure, sometimes women flirted with him- but really, they were flirting with the uniform, not Bob. You, on the other hand, were smiling at the man in glasses who bumbled around your shop a couple times a week and trembled whenever you not-so-accidentally brushed your fingers against his while handing him his purchases. Just Bob.

He shrugged off Rooster’s arm and stood up straight as he could, the way he did whenever an admiral or captain walked by. Deep breath, he reminded himself as he clenched and unclenched his fists. She wants you to ask.

“Do you think I could get your number?” he asked, his voice sounding unfamiliar to his own ears.

That lovely smile widened as you leaned your cheek on your hand. “Depends what you plan to do with it,” you said. Challenged, really. After months of trying to get this guy to respond to your flirting, you were making him work for this. Just a little.

His throat went dry. Oh damn. “I…” He blinked, hoping he didn’t suddenly look as small as he felt. “I could use to… call you?” Your raised eyebrows urged him on. He kind of liked it, the way you emboldened him. He wanted more of it. “I would call you,” he repeated, a little more sure now. “And… I’d ask you out. For coffee.” Oh heck, it was so cute the way you wrinkled your nose. “Dinner,” he tried again; you rewarded him with the return of that dazzling smile. “And-and we’d talk all about the books we’ve read and the books you think I should read, and I’d ask you about your store and I’d even talk about my job, if you wanted me to. And I’d take you home after and walk you to your door and-” He swallowed hard, the flush on your cheeks giving him the courage to go full-speed ahead, fast as the fighter jet he’d just been flying the day before. “And before you go inside, I’d ask to see you again and if I could kiss you goodnight.”

After what felt like an eternity of you staring at Bob, studying him, you finally let out an amused little hum. “That’s the most I’ve ever heard you say,” you mused, drumming your fingernails on the book that still sat between the two of you. “Promise you’ll talk that much at dinner?”

Relief flooded his chest as he nodded. “Yes ma’am.” He cleared his throat. “I’ll talk as much as you want me to.”

“I’ll hold you to that.” Still holding his gaze, you reached over for a flyer advertising a book and wine night you were hosting the following week- an event Bob had already decided he’d be going to, of course- and used a glittery blue pen to scribble down your name and number. “I’m free tonight, by the way.”

Dazed was the only word to describe Bob as he took the flyer from you. “Tonight,” he echoed, a smile finally stretching across his face. “I’ll, uh, see you tonight.” He looked down at the flyer, admiring your looping letters, the way the glittery ink caught the light, your name- oh. “I’m Robert, by the way,” he blurted out. “Or Bob. Everyone calls me Bob. It’s my callsign.”

It looked like now that you had him talking, he didn’t know how to stop. And it was pretty damn cute, if you were being totally honest. “Nice to finally meet you, Bob.”

“Nice to meet you too.” His shoulders finally relaxed as he just stared at you, the ghost of a smile on his face. “Really nice.”

He probably would have stayed there all day, just taking in the sight of your pretty smile and basking in the pride of finally successfully speaking more than two words to you. But Bradshaw clapped a hand on his shoulder, breaking his gaze from yours.

“Why don’t we let this lady get back to work,” he suggested with a shit-eating grin, “and I help you figure out where you’re taking her for dinner tonight?”

Bob nodded, quickly turning his eyes back to you; oh, thank God, you were still smiling at him. “I’ll see you later,” he promised, raising his hand in a half wave as Rooster finally started dragging him away. “And- and I’ll call you.”

 “You better,” you teased, casually tossing his forgotten book to him; he barely caught it. “Because I’m looking forward to answering your question.”

He paused in the doorway, brows furrowed. “My question?”

You nodded, eyes flittering up and down his figure. “Whether or not you can kiss me.”

“Oh.” He looked down, all of his bashfulness returning with a vengeance. When he looked back at you, you were still grinning. “I hope you say yes,” he admitted, barely loud enough for you to hear.

“Guess you’ll find out tonight.” You offered him a little wave as Rooster yanked him out the door. “Bye, Bob.”

“Goodbye-” But the door had already closed behind him. Bob allowed Rooster to drag him down the block a ways before finally regaining control of his steps. When he looked at his friend, he found the smuggest grin waiting for him.

Rooster chuckled and ruffled Bob’s hair. “You don’t gotta thank me,” he razzed. “Just promise me I’ll be the best man at your wedding.”

Bob grinned and shoved his friend off him. “I think Phoenix’ll fight you on that one. She’s already called dibs.” He glanced down at the flyer and book in his hands, reminders that your conversation really just happened. That you actually wanted to go out with him- and might even let him kiss you.

He’d barely settled into the passenger seat of the car when he pulled out his phone and began typing, ignoring Rooster’s knowing smirk. Sure, maybe it was a little sooner than you expected. But Bob couldn’t help himself; while he didn’t usually read love stories, he knew that he wanted this one to begin as soon as possible.

first off, Remy is quite the romantic, however, he also has an impulsive streak so when he asked you out, it’s safe to say it was pretty unplanned on his end

he asked you out in the mansion kitchen, slipping a playing card with the question into the pockets of your sweatpants while you stood making coffee.

and he had the biggest devilish grin on his face when you found him later that day and gave him the card back, writing a yes on the card

on top of being a romantic, Remy loves to cook so say goodbye to ever having to cook for yourself, unless you like cooking then he is happy to share the kitchen with you and make dinner with you

you also have to now get used to sharing a space with three cats. After all you did start dating a proud cat dad.

he’s extra protective on missions, even though he knows you can hold your own he’s always keeping an extra close eye on you while out in the field.

Remy is also really good at handling panic and anxiety attacks. if you struggle with mental health he is always there to support and help you through it

he will also go out of his way to learn everything he can about the conditions you live with. you deal with OCD, guess who is spending hours reading up on it and talking to doctors about how he can help

he also will naturally want to move a lot faster with the relationship. he’s got a very all or nothing mindset to life however, he will easily adapt to your pace for the relationship, respecting and talking about boundaries. he may act like a little kid but he is pretty good with communication

except his past. he’s gonna take some time to open up about his time prior to joining the x-men. he’ll share everything about New Orleans with you but his childhood? oh that’s gonna take a while.

Remy also deals with nightmares, most of them revolve around his time under Apocalypse’s control as the horseman Death. Some are about his time with Sinister.

he’ll try his best to not wake you up whenever he has one, slipping out of bed quietly and walking around the house.

when you do notice or wake up to one, he won’t be too keen to tell you about the dream but he will accept the comfort. he’ll lay his head on your chest and let you soothe him back to sleep

and the same goes for you if you ever have a nightmare.

Remy's strongest love language is definitely physical touch, this boy cannot keep his hands to himself, whether it's holding your hand while walking together or having his hand on your thigh, inching up further and further, you are going to have a clingy boy on your hands

overall, you have a partner who will adore you like a devotee with his deity and will support you and protect you till his dying breath

I've never actually gone out of my way to like, actually watch 9-1-1 myself, and thus just about everything I know about the show comes from twitter discourse, gay fanfiction, and random clips and edits that i come across on tiktok, and yet I have decided that ABC desperately needs to let me become the new showrunner, and thus;

Things I would do if I suddenly got to replace Tim Minear as showrunner (even though I'm not 100% sure what exactly his job is past deciding on storylines):

The first episode is the entirety of the opening emergency - doesn't totally matter what specifically it is, but there are actual like serious civilian injury and casualty, Athena and Chim have to work closely together for this one and one of the larger groups of injured civilians is this group of middle schoolers and one of those kids even younger brother. it's the opening of the season so we probably shouldn't do anything too horrific to the kids, but they're hurt and it's just a little too close to being bad for for Athena or Chims comfort. At the end of the day Chim says that he's headed home to hug Jee and the baby, and Athena asks if she'd be welcome to visit as well. there's a scene of chim, Maddie, and Athena hugging jee, then chim goes to take her to bed or smth while Maddie takes Athena to see baby robert in his crib - Athena smiles down at him and says "hi bobby," and for a moment we cut down to her pov over the crib of the baby stirring, but right as his eyes open we hard cut to an overview shot of Bobby nash, alive, waking up on a table, he doesn't look particularly surprised just tired and miserable. and thats how we end the episode 🎉

jee still thinks that baby Robert is her sister. no matter how many times someone tries to correct her, no matter the fact that his name is Robert, she insists that that's her little sister. it's an unending recurring bit through the entire season

there's a whole episode where buck finally just decides to binge watch glee (possibly after getting injured and put on temp leave), and one of the characters thats only in like two episodes of the first season that looks disturbingly similar to chim. like, that's literally him. and buck goes on this whole crazy conspiracy about chim having a secret twin or clone that is also an actor, before chim finally just tells him that he was on the show bc he was friends with someone that worked on it at the time and had extra vacation time and thought "that might be fun" - buck goes slightly crazy at this information

eddie gay realization scene is something silly and dumb. like the thing that finally makes it click in his head is so small and absurd that he starts to think back on all the things that should have tipped him off and goes "Oh my god I'm a fucking idiot" –> it's something silly like,, he watches brokeback mountain for the first time bc buck wanted to see it, and while he's crying at the end he just goes "oh my god I'm gay 😭" and buck goes "what." and he goes "wha? 😥" and doesn't even realise what he'd said - or that he meant it - until like 30 minutes later while buck spirals next to him

Buck actively calls himself bisexual. thats all.

an entire episode from Chris's pov - it's majorly shot differently than the rest of the show, and has a different narration style. honestly, after the end of s8 I just think we deserve more of Chris's perspective on everything happening around him, thanks

buddie canon by the middle of the season, I dunno how specifically, but yeah - secret relationship for a few episodes which then leads to;

bottle episode in the firehouse - everyone is violently bored and causing problems about it, theyve even tried saying the q-word but it just wont work, buck and Eddie keep trying to sneak in some alone time but everyone is in such close corters and aware of everyone else that it's fucking hard, finally they get a moment but chim walks in on them and is horrified. they manage to convince him that he needs to keep it secret at least for a little while (they're guilt trippy as fuck, you'd best believe) - he's struggling the entire rest of the episode, and honestly buddies made peace with the fact that everyone's going to find out today anyways, so they're not particularly upset or surprised when he finally blurts it out infront of everyone. everyone else though goes deathly quiet, glancing between chim and buddie, and finally buck goes "... it's really quiet right now." and Then the bell finally rings for the first time in 10 hours

buck and Eddie run into father Brian while they're out (pre buddie canon, me thinks) and Eddie is kinda embarrassed while he tells him that he was totally right and blahblahblah. meanwhile, buck is right beside him about to pop from jealousy at Eddie giving some credit to this guy for his gay realization - even when he realizes he's literally a priest, he cannot stop being weird about it, and Eddie just thinks it's soo funny of him

Maddie becomes an emergency medical director for dispatch: she directs people on what they should do during medical emergencies until help arrives - she kind of already does this, but I think having her take on this particular role would be a good move forward for her character and career

Analyzing Once Upon a Time

This can't be how the story ends

Since this blog is now as old as Henry in the Pilot, we thought this would be a good time to re-introduce this Once Upon a Time theory to the new kids on the block - and to the old kids on the block, because we have learned a thing or two during the decade we've been researching this concept.

The heart of the theory can really be summed up in one sentence:

"Everything that happened on Once Upon a Time also really happened in our world, and it is all a metaphorical retelling of Emma's life experiences in the past and in the present."

That's the part of the theory that we are certain about. Every episode has a deeper meaning, there is no fluff and together they all form one big story.

Does that mean that the story that we watched, didn't really happen? No, it's more like getting two stories for the price of one. The best metaphor we can come up with is that of lenticular cards.

Remember those little cards that you would twist and then the image would change? It doesn't really matter which one of those two images is real, because they both are. Someone had to draw and print both of them and use the right technique so we could see them both. Usually the images tell a bit of a story when you combine them, but they work perfectly fine as two standalone images.

So what we are doing is simply twisting the card, we're revealing our second story. We've really emotionally invested in these characters and now we're entering an Alternate Universe that was written by the same writers. And that's the real appeal of this theory, to get another story after the show's been off the air for so long, with the characters we know and love, because they are both.

Let's say the genre of the story we watched on television for 7 years is fantasy and the genre of our new AU is magical realism. So take a seat, suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride, because we're about to watch the official trailer of this new ABC show called Once Upon a Time.

If you watch the trailer, you see the idea of the two sides of the story being reinforced. You also hear the voice-over tell us that "someone from our world" needs to save the fairy tale characters while showing an unconscious Emma. This is the moment when the story splits in two.

Once Upon a Time takes place in what Jung called "The Collective Unconscious", or in this case The Enchanted Forest - a place where humankind's stories are real, where the fairy tale characters we know and love live - the world of archetypes.

A metaphorical curse is cast when Emma crashes her car. She loses consciousness and travels to her own subconscious mind. The fairy tale world and Emma's personal world collide and she gradually steals the fairy tale characters to work through her own issues and traumas. This is how the fairy tale characters actually get trapped in our world.

This is why this version of the story is "Magical Realism" - In magical realism, the underlying idea is that the world we currently live in actually has an undercurrent of magic, of intelligence, a magic that expresses itself through uncanny coincidences. We see this in the Pilot. Emma makes a heartfelt wish, and a second later, her long lost son rings the door bell. Unlikely, but possible in our world. When she slams her car door in anger, electric sparks fly and when she looks up at the clock, it's stuck on 8:15. August 15th. The date her long lost son was born. Odd coincidences, but entirely possible.

This magical world, however, is also a world of karma, because she violently knocks a man against his steering wheel earlier in the episode. Later that night, she hits her own head. This was the only way for the hidden magic of our world to grant Emma's wish and to restore her karma. The intelligent universe forced her to confront her demons with the help of age-old archetypes, so she could heal from her traumas, learn the life lessons she needs to allow people like Henry and Regina into her life.

Everything we saw on this show was Emma's real experience during the show's timeline, but the undercurrent of the world she experienced was created by her memories and by everything what's going on in the world around her while she is in different states of consciousness. Like Jefferson points out during "Hat Trick", even fictional stories come from a real place. They come from the writer's emotions and experiences, codified into story.

What we didn't know when we first started writing this theory, was how weird our consciousness really is. Real comas are nothing like movie comas where people just sit up one day. Maybe they need a little bit of physical rehab and then off they go. No, in the real world, people spend days, weeks, months or even years living in between their dream world and reality, trying to make sense of it all. Some people report having no memory of the months after they woke up and after they were up and somewhat functional. Many report strange dreams and remembering conversations that happened around them - except they thought they were participating.

Based on this newfound knowledge, we concluded that Emma was only in a deep coma for parts of the show's timeline. We think Emma's state in this theory closely aligns with what medical professionals call a minimally conscious state (MCS). Sleeping curse victims in an MCS are awake but show limited awareness of their surroundings. They may respond to stimuli, have brief moments of purposeful behavior, or even show emotional reactions to familiar voices or events. While their consciousness seems fragmented, they can form connections between external events and their inner experiences. The show uses David's coma story to tell us what's happening with Emma. He is able to grab Mary Margaret's hand, which he couldn't do if he was in a full coma. That means Emma is sometimes saying words and interacting with the people around her. They can connect with her in meaningful ways. And they do.

The show is peppered with hints that point to Emma's state in the land without magic. Jefferson is one of the characters who is used as a part of her subconscious that is trying to make Emma aware of her situation in the reality realm, but during the second episode, Emma herself gives us a description of the curse that she is now trapped in.

Emma: "So, for decades, people have been walking around in a haze, not aging, with screwed up memories, stuck in a cursed town that kept them oblivious."

What's very important about this description, is the "screwed up memories". The flashbacks about Emma's life that we have seen, are just as metaphorical of the other parts. They did happen, but they didn't happen in the way we saw them happen. The best explanation for how these 'new memories' are created is by looking at one clear example.

The "memory" of Emma giving birth to Henry is actually a metaphorical memory of Henry coming back into Emma's life, through parallels and visual clues. In this new memory, she expresses how she really felt in that moment, in so much emotional pain she could scream, and terrified to be asked to be a mother. This is how all the stories are created.

Much of the show works this way, except unlike during this scene, we haven't seen the original experience that the metaphor is based upon. So to decipher the rest of Emma's memories, all we can do is look at the recurring themes and storylines, as they show what Emma is wrestling with. Season 1 is full of car crashes, because crashing her car in the Pilot is a very recent trauma. Parents giving up children is a recurring trauma, because it matches both her story and Henry's story. This is the translation key to figure out Emma's story. Look at the patterns.

If we listen back to the show's trailer one more time, the theme song that was chosen to represent the show couldn't be more of an invitation to see the reality layer of the story.

This is Emma fighting for her life in reality. Asking Regina and Henry and the people around her to help her come back to life, because this can't be how the story ends. This can't be how she dies.

Ooookay... so where's the fun exactly?

You may be wondering, what is the appeal? Admittedly, this story is somewhat sad and dark at first glance, but remember when you watched the first season and you were trying to guess the characters' fairy tale identities? You get to do that again, except this time you are trying to guess the real world identities. You get to experience the curse from the inside and it really does feel like you can recapture some of the fun from the first time around.

Once you realize that the memories we saw were warped, many questions bubble up to the surface. How did Henry really find Emma? Who gave him the story book and why? How did he come to his conclusions? Is he the author because he is creating the fairy tales he is reading to Emma? Who are Emma's real parents? Why was she given up for adoption? What really happened to her in foster care? Is Neal really Henry's father or is there more to the story? What is wrong with Emma? Was there something fishy about the adoption? Why is she in and out of consciousness? How do Henry and Regina react? Did Regina really try to kill her? If Regina wasn't actually the evil queen, why did Henry think she didn't love him? Why is everyone suddenly related? Who is Emma Swan? Who is Regina Mills? Who is Henry? And Gold? And Hook?

It becomes a gigantic mystery, a fantastical true crime show. And the more people lend their ears and their eyes to it, the better our chances are to actually solve this very, very weird puzzle. Because as we said, the only part of this theory that we are sure of, is that everything we saw, is all a metaphorical retelling of Emma's life in the past and in the present. We report on the connections we find, the possible interpretations. The recurring themes. The meaningful parallels. We don't claim those are the correct interpretations, because they change as we dig deeper.

So consider this an invitation to take a bite out of the forbidden fruit of knowledge, join in and share your observations, because we would like to see the full picture once we tilt our little card to take another look.

He has no issues with commitment. If anything, he tries to hide how ready he is to commit to someone so he doesn’t scare them off. Utano has told him in the past that this sort of intensity can be seen as a red flag.

Although he dreams of being a husband, it takes him a while to feel ready for that next step in life for a couple of reasons. One, he can’t believe he reached that milestone in life, and two, he wants to make sure you have similar goals in life since he only wants to get married once. (Nekota’s marriages have scarred him.)

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

He comes off as brusque and serious to those who don’t know him well, but once you’ve gained his trust, he’ll treat you gently. He’s very attentive to your emotions.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

He doesn’t like giving hugs unless it’s a very emotional situation, which he’ll do as a sign of reassurance. He also isn’t a fan of receiving hugs unless it’s from the little kids on the show or from the person he likes. Side hugs especially make him suspicious, since that’s what his bosses usually do when they ask him to work overtime.

With you though? Oh, he loves giving you hugs, wrapping his arms around you from behind. His hugs are very firm and warm. Uramichi really likes it when you cuddle into his chest. 

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)

He’s rather picky and cautious when it comes to partners, but when he finds the one, he’s smitten. He feels like he said I love you too quickly in his last relationship, so it takes him a while to tell you that he loves you (maybe 8 months to a year in). 

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

He does feel jealousy quite often, but Uramichi understands that it comes from a place of insecurity for the most part rather than your behavior. Although he may feel pangs of jealousy immediately, he does his best to be rational before acting on it.

Uramichi may bring up the issue when you’re in private, but if something or someone is really driving him mad, he’ll whisper hotly in your ear that he’s jealous and can’t stand it. It doesn’t directly address whatever’s bothering him, but it does make you drag him away to somewhere more private where he can show you how jealous he is.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

You’re not sure if you’d categorize his kisses as awkward, shy, or both at first. His lips just press flatly against yours as if he’s already expecting to be rejected. When he knows that you feel the same way about him though, his kisses grow in fervent passion.

Of course he likes to kiss your lips, tangling his hand in your hair to press your mouth closer to his. He also likes kissing your neck, blowing ticklish raspberries on them.

Uramichi goes wild when you kiss along his collarbone and all over his chest.

L = Little ones (How are they around children?)

Uramichi plays the big brother role very well. He excels in being goofy and fun but isn’t afraid to be firm with the children when they’re acting up. Even though the kids on the set often clown on him, they know he has a kind (but lonely!) heart deep down, which is why he’s so popular. It would probably bring him to tears if he knew that the kids see him as a protective and safe figure, someone that he wishes he had in his life as a child.

He secretly wants to be a father–despite his fears of failing like his own–so he doesn’t mind dealing with children with different personalities. He sees it as gaining experience for fatherhood. Being around kids absolutely drains him though.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

It’s not that Uramichi isn’t a morning person, he just hates waking up and knowing he has another horrid day to live.

Usahara mentioned that Uramichi has multiple alarms and hits the snooze button a lot. This is a bad habit he developed after he quit his career as a gymnast. Our boy was really going through it and sleeping in a lot. When he started to get his life together, he found it difficult to get back into his old routine of waking up immediately and working.

On his days off, he sets his alarm to 9 or 10 am, so his day isn’t completely wasted. His morning routine after washing up consists of stretching, a light jog, then a cig as a reward after. He’ll let you sleep then wake you up with cuddles in bed.

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)

Uramichi is the type of guy that indulges in revenge bedtime procrastination (purposefully staying awake for decompression/”me time” activities at the behest of your sleep and rest). Long day working OT? Guess that means he’ll stay up till 2 am to make the most of his day. Naturally, he sets 3 extra alarms when he does this.

You’d think that this bad habit would improve once you get together, but it actually worsens. Since he had to spend 8+ hours at work without you, naturally he needs to stay up late to spend time with you. He’ll fight back yawns and “rest his eyes” several times before he finally lets himself fall asleep. The only way he’ll stop is if you sleep (actually sleep) together. He likes being able to cuddle and love on you throughout the night.

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)

He’s surprisingly willing to open up about superficial things early on. However, he’ll slowly reveal his rough past, insecurities, and depression slowly and sporadically. He’s afraid of scaring you off.

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)

He’s easily annoyed, but he finds his tolerance for things is much better after being around you. 

Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?)

Uramichi has a secret memo on his phone that has notes about your favorite things. He does his best to remember things about you, but he does forget sometimes. He also has a tendency to remember the things that you hate better than the things that you actually do like.

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

When you tell him that you want to live together. Uramichi views this as the first step towards your future together.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

He’s insanely protective, especially since he’s famous (though he wouldn’t dare admit that out loud). Uramichi doesn’t feel comfortable announcing your relationship publicly until he goes over potential issues that you may face: nosey reporters that want to know about that washed up gymnast Uramichi, weird mommy blogs that police everything their children engage with, and gossip columns. He’s willing to throw away his reputation and pride if it means protecting you.

Uramichi just wants someone to stand up for him (No, sit down, Usahara! Uramichi said that you don’t count!). He’d absolutely love it if you did something that healed or protected his inner child. I think allowing him to be vulnerable and reassuring him if he’s failed (or thinks he has) would make him feel safe. At the end of the day, he needs to know that he’s loved and that he has a home to come back to. 

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?)

Maximum effort for everything, even if it burns him out. 

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

Smoking and drinking are his biggest vices, though I can see him cutting down on that significantly once he’s in a happy relationship.

He can’t say no to the Together with Maman merch that Kikaku constantly throws at him. Even though the Kotori-san merch scares you both, the pile of plushies continues to grow in the spare closet. (You’re both afraid of being cursed if you donate them.)

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

He’s not concerned about his looks at all. He thinks of himself as an average-looking guy (mommy blogs and sports columns beg to differ). 

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

Well, he felt empty before he met you, so he figures he’d feel his usual normal if you’re gone. He thinks he’s actually having a health crisis if you two got into a big fight or separated.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)

Uramichi really likes it when you baby him and doing gross coupley things like feeding him food or wearing matching outfits. He’ll sigh and make a big show of how exhausting that is or how you’re both in public and can’t do that. Really though, he’s loving every minute of it. (The paps got some good shots of you two adding a padlock to a famous bridge known for giving couples eternal love.)

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

He really dislikes people who are constantly tardy.

Uramichi also looks down on people who brag about their skills and can’t back it up. (Luckily he doesn’t have to deal with these types too often.)

One time, Utano set him up on a date with an acquaintance that reminded him of Kumatani. It was traumatizing. He doesn’t like it when his partners share too many similarities with his friends.

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?)

He’s a cuddler when he sleeps! (Which is the only reason why that lifesize Kotori-san and giant baguette are still in his bed.) It’s difficult to get out of his grip once he wraps his legs around you.

Ok soo there were

SOME peeps who don’t believe Timmy couldn’t become a lawyer due to how bad he did in middle school (strange concept middle school we don’t have those in Australia we just go from

Primary to high school here there is no middle school (think our high schools take over the middle school part and add that into high school years)) BUT forget that

A) Timmy had a very not great human parents who would leave him with a very bad abusing babysitter

And

B) had had a very bad no good crazy out of his mind Teacher who didn’t really care for his students & only wanted to capture fairly god parents and just love any excuse to fail Timmy because he’d use that to try to get to Wanda & Cosmo & peri

If you had taken Timmy to a teacher who cared about their students there would be more parent teacher meetings and they’d have found out Timmy’s parents were not fit to be parents

And if Timmy’s parents really cared about how Timmy was doing in school they could of hired a tutor or changed schools where they could of help Timmy learn and do better but they were too warped up in themselves to notice Timmy needed help with school or that Cocker wasn’t fit to teach

And I can say this as someone who has adhd and has a mother who truly cared for my sisters and I she saw how I struggle and school wasn’t doing anything she looked into ways to help me learn my abcs so I could read and write this out now (I know my spelling & grammar still not great but I did develop a love for reading and can do that now thank to her )

Also I believe that once they had Peri Wanda & Cosmo they were the ones who would help Timmy learn because no other adult in his life was doing that for him AND so I believe once Timmy stopped having Cocker as a teacher (like when he goes to high school) I believe he’d be able to study better (and I don’t know maybe get a proper therapist who probably figures out Timmy has ADHD because Timmy seems to have undiagnosed ADHD)

So I believe @jessadamsdraws the deal au where Timmy becomes a lawyer could happen once he stops having Cocker as a teacher because Wanda & Cosmo care for both Peri AND Timmy as their kids and would want what’s best for both of them (and if Wanda is anything like my mum is I believe she would find a way for Timmy to get the help he deserves & needs)

So yeah I believe Timmy could become a lawyer

Also I love fan theory that Hazel might be autistic being as she has a really hard time dealing with change and it’s great Wanda Cosmo and maybe Peri are there for her as well

I have so many questions about what 9-1-1 is going to do when/if Eddie returns to LA. He owns his house and is renting it to Buck who gives up his loft. So then is Buck going to have to look for somewhere new to move to if/when Eddie returns.

What we know: Eddie is definitely going to Texas and Tim said we'll get something from him in Texas in 8x12. He also said the door is open for Eddie to return to LA.

He's also said that everyone's life changes in 8x10 so that could be interesting.

So there's a few options:

Eddie is not coming back to the show after this season. Personally I do wonder if he's moving to Nashville after some time in Texas. It would certainly tie the spin-off to the OG. And if Nashville doesn't make it past a season then Eddie would just revert back to the OG. I say this because ABC has done this before with Grey's when they had Warren go to Station 19, and the moment that Station 19 ended he came back to Grey's. I'll bet it was in his contract.

It's also an easy way to just connect the shows and bring the audience over to the new show in a more concrete way. I think they've learned a lot about that from Lone Star and how so many people just didn't care for Lone Star in the same way and they need Nashville to be successful and it would tie the two shows together somehow. I could be completely off base on this but I really doubt that Ryan would leave the show without having some other role lined up and if he were getting a pay raise and higher billing then I could see this happening.

Other option is that Eddie is in Texas for most of the rest of the season but that we see him from time to time and that when he returns Buck is forced to find a new apartment. Hijinks with them living together for an episode. Or maybe he couch surfs for a while again. I know that buddie shippers will jump on this and say they'll get together and keep living together while in a romantic relationship. I wouldn't even begin to entertain that idea. Absolutely nothing points to things going that way.

I mean it's 9-1-1, Buck would probably find a new apartment halfway through an episode and we'll never refer to this again. And if I can put my clown make up on for a moment, maybe by the time Eddie returns, Buck is back in a relationship (ideally back with Tommy) and they decided to move in together into Tommy's house. (highly doubt this will happen even if I still have hope for bucktommy to get back together).

It's just such a drastic move. There is literally no reason to have Buck move into Eddie's house when any random person could have rented it and Buck could have just kept his loft. As a gesture of goodwill to give Eddie a send off it's nice but Buck could have also just gone out of his way to find someone interested in renting the place without also needing to move himself. And if Eddie was going to come back in just a few episodes, then what is the point? So I really do think if nothing else that we will not have Eddie in LA for several episodes but that we'll see him in Texas with Chris after he leaves and that it will feel completely pointless if/when he returns and he and Chris need their place back.

I guess we just gotta wait and see.

I really hope ABC has decided to step in for season 9 because the more we learn about things bts of this season the worse Tim sounds.

Like we have Ryan admitting he thought twice this season he was fired.

Jennifer admitting she thought she was fired this season during the serial killer arc.

Anirudh now saying he thought he was fired this season before then finding out no he wasn’t and being roped into some marvel level conspiracy??

And then Tim actually firing Peter this season.

And with Anirudh admitting Tim created a fake script that showed Ravi dying in order to confuse and mislead the cast and crew. Was Tim also responsible for the alive Bobby script?

Like this is not how you treat your cast and crew. At all.

ABC definitely needs to keep a closer eye on Tim, because he just loves to reference these obscure movies in the show and it doesn't always fit, The Vertigo-plot comes to mind. Or what about his idea for a 'Apocalypse Now' helicopter scene? 🙄

He also looooves to spend time on side characters that don't matter in the big scheme of things, like Brad or Gerrard. It's okay to feature them, but he needs to cut back these characters' screen time in order to focus on the main characters we all love and cherish, like Eddie Diaz!

It also seems that there's a lack of good communication between Tim and the cast. Definitely something they need to keep an eye on, I agree. Next to that he also needs to plan more and let someone help him with time management, because that is a skill he severely lacks.

Killing Bobby is of a different order though, because I have a strong feeling that we don't even know half of what went down there. All the weird cast-reactions and the short Peter/Bobby send off? The way everything suddenly changed? How they cut up episodes 12 and 13 in order to 'force' in that 'lab rats' two parter? How every character's story arc came to a complete halt after a few great episodes of character growth and build up? The way those scripts changed all the time and that it wasn't clear for a while who was going to die? As if they were trying out different scenarios and ultimately decided on the one that killed off Bobby.

I don't know. There is something so weird about all of it. I'm not so sure anymore that Peter was actually fired OR if he potentially wanted to leave the show. 🤔 But then... why didn't they think it out more properly? Giving Bobby a more proper send off?

The only thing I'm now sure of is that Bobby Nash is dead in the 911 universe. I truly believed he was coming back and I waited until the last second of 8x18 with hope in my heart.

I don't think they'd drag out a resurrection storyline into season 9. It wouldn't make any sense to do that, because it would only upset people even more than they already are.

So yeah, I do think ABC will need to sit down with Tim and have a 'talk' with him, to make sure he creates a more consistent season 9. But I do still have trust in Tim as a showrunner. I think he could pull off a great season 9... with some help and guidance. 😋

And yes, I'm definitely looking forward to season 9. I've watched a lot of shows and I've seen a lot of characters die. It's always sad and heartbreaking, but ultimately the other characters go on living their life. And I'm very excited to see where their story is going next season.

You all know that my favourite character is Eddie, so I'm definitely excited to see what's going to happen to him in season 9. And then there is Buddie of course. After the insane season 8 Buddie build up? I'm pretty confident that season 9 will deliver on that front.

So yeah, I'll be sat in the autumn/fall! Bring on season 9.😄
