right, anyway! the girl ur dating complains abt this annoying new girl in you ~elite~ school, the daughter of a famous singer. apparently shes weird, and mean, and combative, so tacky and rude and unfiltered and disruptive. this new girl heard some mildly incriminating things you and your girlfriend talked abt, and now shes worried. your attitude is, of course, to go up to the new girl and threaten her for no real reason

ok,. you go on to your little rich kid school club. you get attacked and stabbed on the way to ur secret community service - yknow, over the drunk driving, - and a little child has to live on the street bc ur dad arranges that his brother is wrongfully arrested over it. youre not happy abt it, necessarily, but also youre not the type of person who would do anything to stop it, especially against your dad

your dad humiliates you and tears you a new one and you're all very frustrated w life. but you bow your head to him and move on, as always, because what else can you do?

you get drunk, again, and ends up kissing your girlfriends' best friend

the next day you stumble upon that girl in the hallway, and provoke her - like before, she claps back immediately. didn't she realize already this is your place, and the rest of your friends', and not for people like her??

heres the answer: she starts fighting your friend for calling her mother a slut (in not so many words) and you get in the way - and she reads you and your dad for filth. then, she gets her finger right at the center of the wound - she'd much rather have her people and her mother's artist crowd and revealing clothes and ""lack of class""" over having a corrupt father who'd sent someone to jail for a crime they didnt commit.

I’m so relieved we are talking about this because this isn’t really talked about in the winx club fandom, thanks for bringing it up Jay:)

As someone who did see Flora as south asian growing up as I’m south asian myself, it is very important to actually grow up and realise what her representation as latina means. In my culture, it is normal to be very welcoming when other races dress up in south asian traditional clothing. Where I come from it’s encouraged in school even for other races to dress up in sarees for what we call Racial Harmony Day. It’s a bonding moment between us and other races where we teach them how to tie sarees and it’s nice to see them actually appreciate the culture with us instead of appropriating it like certain celebrities such as Selena Gomez/ Kim Kardhashian. Which was why back then I didn’t feel like it was wrong to draw Flora in South Asian Clothing as I’ve done before. Butttt, like you said, It is erasing her representation as a latina to take that away from her and that is something I should have realised.

And, Aisha as a south asian is an extremely important point to bring up because I’ve experienced racism myself when it comes to that topic. When we used to play winx club with the other girls in my neighbourhood (some were asian, some were white), I was always made to be Aisha because I was dark skinned. It was like by default, because I was the only dark skinned girl, i had to be Aisha. I wasn’t allowed to be Stella or Flora like I wanted to because I don’t look like them. And, there is so much racism against black people in the south asian community itself because of colourism (which seriously needs to be talked about more) that this was pretty upsetting to a child. there’s so much to unpack there because this shouldn’t be a thing amongst literal children which then goes onto adult life. It’s not only erasing identities but its also harmful stereotypes

It is so important to not take away Aisha’s , Musa’s and Flora’s ethnicities, especially for those who create Winx content. And, as for Nabu being south asian coded, I feel such a big responsibility to do something about it, because yes there is so much to explore there but he isn’t a popular character and he gets often misread as a black person.

Anyway! I completely understand! Children see themselves in characters and in a world with very little representation, them looking like us is really important. I completely understand why people wouldn't see Flora as latina (since it really doesn't Jump out at you like Musa being chinese), but I do think recognizing that and respecting it as an adult is important. I actually really liked your Flora art and if it's okay for non-south asians to wear sarees then I don't see an issue with it honestly? The winx travel a lot! Or it could be a special occasion for Aisha and Nabu's wedding yknow ajghladg Like the clothing is important but as long as we're still respecting the fact that she's Latina then her wearing a saree should be fine I think?

And with Aisha!! OGH there's so much racism that goes into letting which kid play which character and the darker skinned kids always had to play her. Like it didn't matter if they weren't black or if they were but wanted to play someone else, white kids would always make them play her :(( White kids, and often white adults, really don't understand how frustrating it is. It's one of the first "wow they really only see me for my race/ethnicity/skin color" that kids go through with other kids. No one should have to go through that :( And Aisha especially shouldn't be taken away as representation from black people like it doesn't matter that she's from Andros - she's meant to be black rep. Trying to make her anything but is just erasing the already very little rep they had in the show

And with Nabu, like again I would never be mad that a kid sees him as black instead of south asian, especially if that kid is black themselves and sees him as more rep. But as adults, we should be able to use our critical thinking skills and recognize that they intentionally designed him to Look south asian (his mother has a bindi like!!). Just because a character is dark skinned it doesn't mean they're automatically a black character (which is something that a lot of people, especially non-black people, like to think). Like I was hyper aware of asian characters in media so I'm really glad that I always saw him as asian, but there are tons of characters that I got wrong and it doesn't take a lot of effort to correct yourself.

It just,,, like I know a lot of people may not understand why this is important but it is. Winx Club is a show that has already gone through so much racism, whitewashing, and erasure. We need to do what we can to make sure the fandom is vigilant of our own biases and unconscious bigotry. And like I said earlier, you can't separate the winx girls from their race. You can't separate Flora being latina without taking away a fundamental aspect of why she was created. You can't take away Musa being asian without taking away everything from her culture. You can't take away Aisha being black without taking away representation and very important race discussions about how her character is treated. Racism and race affects so much more than people like to think and it's just... hhhh when people ignore that.

I feel like religious folks can’t win. ok finished cloud cuckoo land by anthony doerr. it’s alright he’s good at weaving together stories and it has a strong central thread that binds a ton of seemingly distant narratives together. his prose is good; the dude loves stories and it shows. and I love stories about stories so I immediately picked up this book when I read the backing.

err weaker points is that it’s frankly one of those things that you can tell the writer is like…a center-left white american guy whose main purview into political issues is from the seat of the safe spectator trying to write a story encompassing all of humanity. politics, violence, and change wrought by humans instead of time is scary and almost always portrayed as senseless, power-obsessed delusion that’s beyond the grasp or interests of common men. to his credit he tried to extend a great amount of personhood to a character he even classifies as an extremist terrorist (who are like, leftist ecoterrorists; terrible chinese commies who “senselessly” call an american soldier an imperialist pawn also make their appearance—the question of the soldier being in a foreign land fighting the war is never addressed beyond his personal unfamiliarity and the plight of the american soldier) and puts a lot of effort into weaving a circumstance that explains why this “guileless boy” gets radicalized into anarcho eco communism through youtube cult figures (lol, interesting choice considering the reality of things) but he still classifies and grants these roles according to his belief yknow. all of the female characters get married and pop out a bunch of babies in the end and their function as such is supposed to be some narrative tie in to the theme of hope. he writes this passage:

and pretty much only reflects on it later on to have anna (the girl) be like Well he doesnt treat me like a possession. and of course here they’re only playing into an illusion to survive the absurdly cruel rules of their world, but they fall into the illusion in the end, and she, who had such a deep and compelling narrative before, pretty much loses all agency at the point their tales meet. she spends the rest of her life childrearing and learning the language of her conquerers and sewing haphazardly, which she hated as a child, and to be a “carrier/symbol/memory of hope” and is content while her husband’s life and journey continues. this is their return home and the end of the monomyth. and this isnt unintentional or a mistake it’s just written as a part of this overarching theme: the world is forever cyclical in the same way, everyone is the same, through stories we are able to just bear it and stave off death, and so “the world as it is is enough”. everything is in its place. it sort of believes that if only people understood that that they would settle down and not seek great change and foolish notions of a better world. but then it also sort of touches dotingly on this aspect too; it says the fools are just human and being a fool and dreaming of better things and not understanding all while tangling the threads of their mistakes and misguidedness more are what makes them human.

it’s sort of the reason why j0yce from DE (YESSS im going unto the epic crossover again) is the one to say an extremely similar line: “This world is enough.” it’s a lovely line and it does ring true, and it’s something that staves off despair which is a huge central thing to his story, but the outcomes of it are different for everyone. this doesn’t really occur to him and he writes like the power of this idea will always result in the same inevitable outcomes. people realize the world is enough; they abandon the cloud cuckoo land and return home and are granted peace and happiness and truth, for a time, and its enough. he both sideses everything in his story except this. and this whole story reminds me of when DE’s writers mentioned they moved elysium from the middle ages to modernity after realizing they couldn’t cling to antiquity and the middle ages and the old days when “history was not so complicated” to convey what they wanted to convey. doerr sort of instead clings to it instead; the entire narrative is spun around the idea that the myths of old are undying and unchanging and hold a sort of immortal truth that will forever govern human lives.

im not a huge fan of this personally, obviously, and reading through the book was like someone showing me a ton of ingredients I love and cooking them up real fancy with a lot of flourish and then coming out with something that tastes pretty good but is a little bland, like something is missing or there was some misunderstanding of what flavors could have been created. but it’s a fun tale to read with great pacing and great skill in running parallels between all the stories involved and it says something nice enough about human hope and living memory

heads up: 1) this will get long 2) i'm summarising a lot here so even though it's a lot i can't exactly describe all the nuances 3) trigger warnings will show up when relevant

phil is mimi's (@/thatsmimi) character from DSCP, which is an rp based off of jon bois' 17776 story/series. in short, it's set in a world where everyone became immortal for no reason on april 7, 2026 (an event called the moment), and also space probes have managed to gain sentience over time and are people now. the DSCP stands for deep space communication program and is a NASA program (made up for the rp) that basically acts as a big group chat for lots of probes.

phil is the head researcher of the DSCP (NASA staff is practically non-existent at this point, really). he's usually pretty uptight but also snarky - or even asshole-ish, but that's more of a defense mechanism he's eased up on over time. he has a whole arc with nancy (a sentient probe), where he was the first person who talked and bonded with her as she processes being a person, and - actually this is too hard to summarise but he leaves the DSCP at some point due to Conflict and Turmoil but he comes back. they have a very strong bond and she helped him see that he's not just some asshole but really, deep down, a good person.

sicily is mim's (@/coatcandy) character from a TMA rp (or TMARP)! i, uh, am not in this rp and do not know much stuff about TMA. but she's like, 19, an archive assistant (US not british) and got sent off to a very harrowing mission by an archivist AKA her dad to a 19th century ship thats perpetually stuck in the arctic that has several avatars on it. but she actually makes friends/bonds with the whole avatar'd crew and they find a way off.

and also she kills her piece of shit abusive adoptive father who only her took her in after her mother was murdered (an event that caused her to become slaughter-aligned) to train her up for Archive Things. yknow, when you're nay but a teenager and a bubbly kindhearted girl who deeply struggles with her humanity <3 (harold deserved it tho)

and then she becomes the assistant to a different archivist, isidore and they're actually friends etc.

and these two RPs are within their respective RP canons not connected at all. but! mim wrote a series of crossover fics that are basically just phone calls between phil and sicily that purely occur by accident due to multiversal avatar-y bullshit and they share anecdotes/some #struggles with each other cuz both of them got something fucked up going on with their universes (phil - everyone's immortal and no one can die, sicily - your regular TMA fare)

when they get to the apartment it's like... all fucked up by avatar bullshit, and they find that phil in this universe is actually now a ghost who's being trapped in the apartment due to lonely avatar stuff (he didn't become an avatar he's um. dead) phil manages to make it back, but uh, yknow. he struggled with depression and suicidal ideation before the moment (still does sometimes, some ways, that kind of stuff is tied up with his self-perception issues). in his own universe he never made that choice (and then the moment happened so he's been living for thousands of years in world where no one can die), so seeing a timeline in which he did... yeah. i'm not elaborating on it here but it hits in a way.

this isn't in the fic, but there's also a parallel in these crossover universes - in the way that phil didn't survive in sicily's universe, sicily also didn't survive in phil's universe, because the avatars don't exist there, she didn't become slaughter-aligned when her mum was murdered, so she didn't survive that attack either. and she was 14. so there's this... thing we've got here, with two people who meet and connect, and their lives crossover, and the connection is over. and that person is dead in your own universe, and you couldn't have met that person anyway because they'd be a different person, but still you have to mourn them because you've had that connection and.

[edit: one thing i forgot to mention was that knowing that other universes where the fears and avatars and all that dont exist also hits sicily pretty hard in ways. because she doesnt know who she'd be without all that. and phil reassures her of course. you're a kid it'll get better. but then. she actually is dead in his universe. so. </3 cant figure out how to articulate what this story is really exploring but its a lot! i recommend mimi's directors commentary in the video 👍]

look obviously i could never explain in a single post what all the emotions and narratives and relationships mean here. that's wrapped up in phil and sicily's own stories, which ultimately belong to no one else but the people who told those stories, and the people who got to experience those stories. and i'm gonna get sappy here - yes, it's just something really special to an incredibly selective group of people, but really that's the point. the point isn't to create some grand narrative you get acclaim and praise for, it's just to create a story, just for you and your friends, to connect through that work of creation.

and mim (along with everyone else who co-created these rp universes which led to this crossover) really created something so emotionally engaging that even if other people's wouldn't fully get the entire story at play, because the story wasn't ever made to be understood by more than a few people - even then, i can't help but want to share it. because i love it! it's incredible. something about me is i will always want to share the things i love no matter how incomprehensible.

It’s gross and I’ll tell you why, and I’ll break down the article as well because it makes me as angry as a bull.

You simply CAN NOT break these characters down to these (biased!) individual traits. And in Jason’s case, it’s not even a trait, it’s just damn slander with a photo of him dead attached to it, because DC still likes to push the narrative that it’s his fault he died. When in reality, he was a CHILD who was tricked and betrayed by his mother, and in the end still tried to save his mother who was responsible for his death. Joker and Sheila are responsible for this child’s death, NOT HIM.

These are all incredibly complex characters, with incredibly biased descriptions.

For Dick (the only one with his hero name for some reason), the oversexualized Robin by the fandom is more like it rather than ‘the cute Robin’. Which is kinda sad because he has a lot of depth that can be explored and stories that have been told that are really great (not Ric, screw that guy). Like his relationship with Bruce, his relationship with Damian, his relationship with his teams, his life outside of heroism, police life, dealing with his mental health, etc.

From what we’ve seen if I had to pick a single descriptor for him, I’d pick “The protective Robin” or “The first Robin”

Because he’s always willing to throw himself into harm's way to save others. Especially when it comes to his found family. Or the first Robin works well because he was the first. He started the whole Robin line.

For Tim, I’m sorry but I can’t really comment on Tim because I haven’t read his run yet, it’s on my to do list. But from what I have seen from other comics that include him, ‘the smart robin’ doesn’t fit very well because to be Robin they ALL had to be smart. And they all were smart Robins.

If I had to describe Tim, it would be “the detective Robin” because out of all of them, he is the best detective and is the most proficient at it.

For Damian... oh boy, I’m so sorry but he’s not my favorite Robin at all. But I know he’s complex and has depth. If anyone who reads this is a Damian stan, feel free to add onto this and tag me.

And last but definitely not least... Jason Todd.

This whole tweet and the article attached is Jason Todd slander (not what I pay for the DC Universe app for!) and a misrepresentation of his character.

He was a CHILD who just wanted to help and make a difference! He wanted to help the people in crime alley because he knew what it was like to be in that situation and he wanted to save people! When he first put on his Robin suit it gave him MAGIC. He had Robin magic but that Robin magic wasn’t enough to save him from getting beat to death by the joker.

Yes, sometimes he did not listen but that goes for EVERY robin, my girl Carrie Kelly included.

He had sense, he was also a child who made mistakes! Like all the other Robins!

Then he was brought back under the WORST possible circumstances, to come back and find out his death had little to no impact (unbeknownst to him of Bruce’s grief). Then go under some intense training, deal with pit madness, have his mind tainted with, then grow some problems with the man he loved who took care of him. His father.

If I had to pick a label for Jason? It’d be the discarded Robin. He was this boy who was thrown away by the fandom at the time by murder. Then like a broken toy, the writers proceeded to get a new Robin.

Or the redeemed Robin. When Jason was reborn as Red Hood, overtime he became a fan favorite in the DC community. Even won DC’s sexiest man. He was hated at first but is now loved by many.

Heck, maybe even that label because he’s grown from his first resurrection so much. Instead of being angry at the world, he’s now chosen to accept what happened to him and even reconcile his relationship with his family.

Holy moly, this article sucked all the life out of me until I was left DCeased (get it?). It is way too obvious an angry stan wrote this.

How is this in any way Jason’s fault? I don’t recall him having the ability to write his own comic book? This is the writers fault, not Jason’s.

Okay, sure it was rude to interrupt them, I’ll give them that one. But I’m also pretty sure Jason’s insert was for comedic effect. Tons of comic books have these moments.

I had to laugh at the “SO NATURALLY JASON TODD DID SOMETHING ANNOYING TO INTERRUPT IT” it’s just, damn. This article just reeks of bitterness.

This one confused me, so I went to go read the comic book that they were talking about. This, once again, was intended to be a comedic moment. Jason was simply expressing his excitement for going to go to the Gotham library so he blurts our “Holy Gutenberg!”. Bruce spins him around and tells him to never do that again. Even Jason’s confused on why he doesn’t like the reference. I think this is simply comedy, such as when he threatens to fire Carrie if she moved the batplane in the animated movie.

If a crowbar was right there Bruce NEVER would have grabbed it to hurt Jason over a REFERENCE. No sane person would.

Let’s look at the keywords here,

Once again, YOU WANT TO BEAT JASON UP FOR SOMETHING OUT OF HIS CONROL, AND NOT HIS FAULT? TO TOP IT OFF, NOT REAL?

Want someone to blame? Blame Scarecrow and the fear toxins for making Dick see all that. This was an alternate dream reality, no characters were in control or even there.

Yknow what, valid. Honestly, I’m pretty sure the heroes there have memorials elsewhere as well and Jason only got that robin suit on display (which was honestly more so to remind Bruce of his failure and make himself feel guilty), but fair.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this better have been some abstract marketing (which I hope it was) for the new Death in the Family movie coming out.

All in all, the Jason slander from DC was infuriating and frankly unnecessary. He deserves so much better because once again, he is a complex character who deserves a deep dive.

wanna see you keep talking about AT: what's your biggest criticism with each character in the series (as in a writing failure/something you didn't like about them, things of that sort)

Aww fuck! Now you’re asking. 

Everyone: Sometimes they went a bit too far with making the characters act dumb, sociopathic, etc. The show would usually be pretty consistent with having them react humanely. It was season 5, when the show had started taking itself seriously, that the characters acting sociopathic felt like a bit too much. 

Finn:  In his “jerk arc” he went too far. He had no empathy for the lemon people, he had even less than PB, who was already acting pretty sociopathic. He legitimately harrassed both FP and PB. He touched FP’s shoulder and made her uncomfortable. He stroked PB’s hand after the high five in Too Old, which by the way has actually been cut in many countries due to how gross it was. He got super weird in Rattleballs where he was a total simp and told PB about the robot even though he knew she’d kill him, just because he wanted to impress her.  Then in The Tower, he had tunnel vision and legitimately KILLED like a dozen candy people with his tower, which was hilariously referenced in Hot Diggety Doom when he said the candy people don’t trust him anymore.  I didn’t like that they made his arm grow back. Or that he kissed a million princesses in Breezy, which is a poor reflection on the crew’s treatment of girl characters in the show :P I know we ended up with the awesome Fern arc, and Finn got over his romantic hangups in a satisfying way, but the amount of people the episode alienated is unreal. It did a lot of damage to the fandom.  

PB: I hate the entire way they baited her having feelings for Finn. If you remove that kiss in Too Young, her character makes much more sense. Reading her around it makes the ep seem like a massive inconsistency. I don’t like they waited four seasons to work on her as an actual character.  I feel like they went a bit too far in making her cold and pragmatic or sociopathic. Just a smidgen. This is because some of her actions verge on irredeemable. I’m mostly thinking about her relationship with Flame Princess. It doesn’t seem right she’d have no feelings about ruining the life of a fairly innocent child. Also she totally got a bunch of flame people killed in The Cooler. At least in The Cooler, she demonstrated a modicum of doubt before taking apart the sacred Fire Giants. She’s certainly not like the Diamonds, but FP was right to say she was a bad person, and I’m glad she was horrified by what she was becoming, but couldn’t immediately turn off her paranoia or bad instincts - it’s something she works on for the rest of the show and post-canon. (It’s also why shes a million times better than the Diamonds) I think her character in season 10 could have been better handled. For start we got no followup to Elements. It’s pretty significant she became a giant candy monster and brainwashed all of Ooo, no???? It did take them two seasons but they eventually showed she was impacted by having been possessed by the Lich. I was hoping we’d get exploration with Elements too, especially because of how much she unintentionally hurt everyone, like Marceline. They tied her actions in the series far too much to her character for it to feel like something that could be brushed off.    But what was weirdest was that she wanted to go to war with one of her creations. That didn’t seem right. Pb has a complicated relationship with Lemongrab, shown right up through to the same finale (even exploring how they would currently interact in Diamonds & Lemons), and she didn’t want to go to war with him, but she did want to get him usurped by Lemonhope. If she is willing to stoop to war now, why didn’t she just... yknow.... have Gumbald executed? Stealth plan? It seems far more up her alley, and he even tried the same thing. The season finale tried to say she felt under pressure to go to war, but I don’t think it does a good job at communicating why. Why wouldn’t a secret mission work? Would it count as a war crime? If it did, who would sanction her? Gumbald in general sucks. There are better “dark reflections” of Bubblegum in the series, and Patience was a much better villain. I wonder how things would have been different if the season could conclude at its intended pace? 

Marceline: My criticism with Marceline is a lot easier to summarise, because I’ve thought about her less and she’s less involved with the show.... which is the WHOLE PROBLEM!   

1. Put Marceline in the show more. She was barely in the first six seasons at all! She’s such an awesome and fun character when they let her be. More eps like Go With Me would have been awesome.  Even more eps like Princess Day or Be Sweet, where she was LSP’s bestie. 

2. Her character’s personality, for a long time, revolved around being a source of angst. She wasn’t demonstrating her fun side at all. I guess they didn’t want to write her continuing to be a big jerk, but it meant she paled when pitched against the rest of the cast - especially PB and Ice King, who were always great, and if they were in an ep with Marceline, their characters always outshone her. This could have been repaired by having her go on more adventures with Finn and Jake, and developing Marceline’s reactions to various situations. Give her more complexity.     I really love Obsidian because Marceline demonstrates her wild side in this ep and goes on an adventure which is very personal to her. She has some cool action scenes near the start, and this episode connects her more serious personality with the comedic representation at the start of the series. I think this is the best Marceline episode, followed by Varmints (she was so fun but mature in this ep). I like how she was during and after Stakes too. She had far more personality when they were putting her in eps with multiple other characters.   

Ice King: I have no massive thoughts here. I think some of the things he did were a bit too messed up. He killed a bunch of cloud people and furniture in season 6. His actions before that point were far more innocuous, though he did accidentally kill PB those two times, and he did threaten to kill princesses after kidnapping them in season 1. I LOVE Ice King season 7 and up though. He’s so good. I was shocked at the finale when they “killed” him, had him revert into Simon with very few consequences, like all those years as Ice King had vanished. I was so glad to see Simon struggling with his past identity in Obsidian. “This is how I cope!” 

Jake: Like the others barring Marceline, I thought that Jake occasionally did stuff that was too messed up. But because he’s a less serious character, who is already verging on chaotic good/neutral, it isn’t as impactful. I don’t have any major issues with Jake. Maybe I’ll change my mind on rewatch? But I love how he can be so self-contradictory. 

Flame Princess: Last one I want to bring up. This character is a mess. Rebecca intended her to be this very innocent person, having new experiences. This was how she was characterised right through to Earth and Water, but after that episode, her character got... an unfortunate reset. Suddenly a mature and BORING ruler who barely appeared anymore in the show. I felt a lot more could have been done with Flame Princess, and they shouldn’t have made her so dull later on. They played her as a virtuous character who got over her breakup with maturity, and led her kingdom with honesty, to further the development of two entirely different characters rather than to make FP interesting in herself.

i can’t figure it out, and i think when it comes down to it it’s just the plain and simple fact that i have too many faces.

i do this a lot. people don’t always see it and it isn’t always clear to those who don’t look, but i can spell it out for you if you ask or if you take the time to notice. look, here it is: i am an actor.

and i don’t mean that i lie. i do, but not about what you’re thinking. not about feeling, not after middle school, but i am still an actor—so i have a lot of faces.

there are a lot of things i hide, okay? and you can read all my letters and attend all my shows and sleep under all my sheets but you still won’t know me. most people don’t know me. people don’t like me, they like the me i put up for them. people like to think i have it together. i don’t. people like to think they see me fully. they don’t. they see what i let them see.

and i think this is what scares me. that i showed her, yknow, some of the most “me”s that anyone had ever seen, and she went and called me a manipulator, and a bully, and non-empathetic, and a spineless bitch! so i guess there’s a part of me that believes the core faces i have really are those things. and i hide them.

so when you like me, i doubt you like, yknow, me. because you like what i let you see. you like gentle hands and you like laughing in a courtyard and being an active listener. you like counting for a swear jar and swallowing judgement that has been bred into me like i’m a show dog for gossip and you like hearing me say your name. you like when i look at you but still can’t always look you directly in the eyes, or maybe i look too intensely, because my social anxiety kicks in and i go on autopilot.

you don’t like the trenches. which, okay! we all have trenches. but these are bad, and ugly, and they make me sick to think about. people don’t know about what is buried between mud and gore here and i don’t like to tell them. but vulnerability voluntarily means they have to know. and then i am put up for judgement.

this masquerade tells another story. one with which i am poison fanged and angry. i fantasize about tearing everything i have down and sinking my teeth into the people i love just because i know that my words hold that weight, that with one sentence and a well timed snark i could ruin everything. it is here that i know that i am a lighthouse, and i can guide any ship to any harbor and you may think you are in control of a situation but i am the one guiding you home, you see, and i will take whatever secrets you will give me and hoard them in the captain’s log. and in the past, i cried crocodile tears and i wailed at the thought of people i love leaving me in the hopes that they would pity me. i fished for days and never caught a carp. even just yesterday, i spat out words like they were teeth and laughed in the face of reality and still, now, i hate the people i am supposed to love the most but i would never tell them. i believe i am a god, i know in my chest i am a saint and i am better than you and i want to rub it in your face but i don’t, i contain this and instead i smile gently and tell you everything is going to be fine, while my body contorts in my mind’s eye to a jungle song of perverse pride and greed. i am stingy, i am gluttonous, i am cruel.

so those are the trenches. this is what i am dealing with here. so it will never truly be someone else’s fault. and i have a hard time saying this (this is a trench in of itself, okay?), which makes this all the harder to verbalize that i am terrified of loving when they don’t know me in this way. people leave when they find out, people wrinkle their noses at me and i laugh it off and take note and compartmentalize instead. so i don’t let them see it at all, and people end up enjoying the company of a girl who doesn’t exist. (the child inside of me, however, does, and it is very angry.)

and yknow, i realize to an extent i’ve always been this way. i don’t like people in ways that really, really mean something to me until i have them for a year or so and they see me for a year or so and even then that’s not a guarantee. there’s some sort of tint on romance for me, but they aren’t rose colored lenses. grey, maybe? half moon glasses and something soft and shapeless in my hands. it has always taken me longer. i never understood how you could like someone without really knowing them. that truly blows my mind. i could never, ever imagine loving someone without having any basis of a connection with them and i guess that’s why this time is working out so well for me emotionally? so i guess it isn’t totally her fault, but i don’t think getting a knife twisted in my gut helped very much. trauma is one hell of a drug.

i hide a lot. people don’t realize it. whether they choose not to or i just have secured my masks that well, i’ll never know. but i have a lot of guilt, over this. i know people want to know me. i want them to know me too! i just can’t get it to happen. i keep spoonfeeding them a superficial stew of “me”s and hope they get enough flavor to guess the mystery meat in the bottom of the pot. i should probably give up, i think, and resign myself to the fate of eight, but i can’t bring myself to do that either. i am obsessed with being seen. i guess i just want to know how your me fits in with my me and how to curate the catalogue of personas to fit you just right. i want you to be happy with your purchase, don’t i?

fucking hell, this whole thing is a mess. i am exhausted, and tired of how complicated i make things. (trench number three: i can’t communicate for shit. i am a huge pussy bitch. i am terrified of hurting any feelings so i generally make things worse instead of dealing with anything. my mom dug this one for me, actually! go mommy issues, aka trench number four—but that’s a different story.)

1. LET’S START WITH MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE MOVIE: mulholland drive - a drama, a mystery and lowkey a thriller - after a car crash, a woman loses her memory. she finds help from a young actress that just recently came to hollywood and together they try to get her memory back, and find out why the amnesiac woman has so much money on her. as they get involved in mysteries, schemes and the hidden parts of hollywood, they fall deeper into a world that they aren’t even sure is real.

2. eternal sunshine of the spotless mind - i would call this a romantic drama! - basically it’s about a couple whose relationship turns sour, and they decide to get a procedure that will delete their memories of each other. it’s honestly such an interesting movie and it’s really tense as you watch strangers, once lovers, dance around each other and systematically forget they have done it

3. magnolia - i would call this a drama - it’s basically a bunch of stories complied into a movie, with characters SEEMINGLY unrelated trying to learn about love, forgiveness, and the meaning of life, lives separated but much closer than they know

4. the music never stopped - drama! - it’s basically the story of a father trying to bond with his estranged son, who recently discovered he has a brain tumour that prevents him from forming new memories. his dad, left without a choice, tries to connect with him through music

5. american beauty - drama - it’s really hard to give this a synopsis, and the ones i see aren’t all that accurate. it’s true that a suburban dad has a lot of sexual frustration, but that’s not necessarily the essence of a movie - it’s a family with a lot of pent up feelings, frustrations, and others

6. gisaengchung (parasite) - drama, thriller(?) - i think everyone might know this movie already but it’s definitely worth mentioning! it’s hard to describe, but try to think of the differences between a high class family and a lower class one. what if hte lower class starts trying to profit from the others? that’s when greed comes into play

7. byōsoku go senchimētoru (5 centimeters per second) - i’d call this a romantic drama, but not with all the focus on romance. romance is the undertone for the drama - this is an animated movie told in 3 instances of someone’s life, when he fell in love as a child, when he lost that love as a teen, and when he’s trying to get over that love, surrounded by the cold world and adult obligations.

8. lost in translation - drama, comedy (i say comedy not bc it’s a comedy just because it’s light hearted yknow) - a washed out actor travels to tokyo for a commercial, where he meets a young woman. they form a bond and start an unlikely friendship. 

9. the night of the hunter - it’s a noir film, i’d say a bit more than thriller but not exactly HORROR, crime - a religious fanatic marries into the family of a gullible widow and her two kids. only the kids know their father hid $10,000 from a bank robbery, and there’s something strange about their step dad.

10. beasts of the southern wild - adventure, drama, fantasy (?) - this is a really good take on environmental issues in my opinion. a six year old has to learn courage and love as she deals with her father's fading health and melting ice-caps that are flooding her ramshackle bayou community

11. green room - horror, thriller - a punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a bar. this movie is so nice to watch because it flows really well and you feel really tense

12.  inglourious basterds - war, drama, adventure - in france, during the second world war, a group of jewish u.s soldiers come up with a plan to take down nazi leaders, not knowing the owner of a theatre is planning something with the same objective

13. amour - drama, romance -  an octogenarian couple’s love is tested when the wife has a stroke, and the husband sees himself forced to change his whole life to take care of her. 

14. rosemary’s baby - thriller, horror(?) - a young couple trying to have a baby moves into a fancy apartment, surrounded by peculiar neighbours. once the wife gets pregnant, she becomes convinced that the neighbours are trying to steal her baby for a satantic cult

15. moonlight - drama - the struggles of childhood, adolescence and adulthood, as told by an african american man struggling with his identity and sexuality. 

16. el laberinto del fauno (pan’s labyrinth) - drama, war, i’d say thriller sometimes -  in the falangist spain in 1944, a bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world

17. oldeuboi - action, mystery - a man is kidnapped and kept prisoner for 15 years. once he’s finally out, he discovers he has to find his captor in 5 days so he can find out why he was kidnapped. in the meantime, he starts a peculiar involvement with a much younger woman, and uncovers secrets he didn’t know he had kept

18. låt den rätte komma in (let the right one in) - crime, drama, fantasy(?) - an overlooked and peculiar boy finds love and revenge in an even more peculiar girl

19. birdman (or the unexpected virtue of ignorance) -  a washed-up superhero actor attempts to revive his fading career by writing, directing, and starring in a broadway production. this movie’s synopsis doesn’t give it the proper emphasis but it’s so good. it’s also all shot in the sequence of a day (obviously there’s cuts, but you can’t see them so it looks like only 1 shot and it becomes an amazing experience)

20. the blair witch project - horror -  three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind. this movie was one of the first ‘found footage’ films that really sent the genre flying, i would highly recommend

21. for the same reasons above, i recommend [REC] (the spanish one), as it also brought found footage films to the public in the beginning. it’s about a journalist who finds herself stuck on a building with the infected, since the police decided to sacrifice everyone inside for the sake of the virus not getting out.

22. salinui chueok (memories of murder) [trigger: mention of r*pe]  - action, crime, drama - in a small Korean province in 1986, two detectives struggle with the case of multiple young women being found raped and murdered by an unknown culprit

23. once - music, drama - a story about a pianist and a guitarist coming together and trying to live out their struggles through music. 

24. gokseong (the wailing) - mystery, horror, thriller - soon after a stranger arrives in a little village, a mysterious sickness starts spreading. a policeman, drawn into the incident, is forced to solve the mystery in order to save his daughter.

read Barthes ‘death of the author’, I need to digest it a little more but I have mixed feelings... I like that he wants to establish a kind of criticism which isn’t about discovering an authoritative interpretation of the text, but...

okay, he opens with this line from a Balzac about ‘Woman’ (said that way!) and he asks, who says this line? Is it the main character, is it Balzac speaking from experience, is it Balzac philosophizing, is it... and the point is that its actually-- all of these, for “all writing is itself this special voice, consisting of several indiscernible voices”. In order to write I efface myself as the writer, so I can write these multiply encoded utterances which are unique to writing. When I write philosophy, or when I write a blog post, or when I write in my diary, I always write as me, the voice I write in is only & exclusively my own and you can take it as an expression of my thoughts alone, but writing fiction is effacing my voice in order to bring out multiple voices, “multiple writings, issuing from several cultures and entering into dialogue with each other, into parody, into contestation“.

So I can’t read Baudelaire’s poems like I might Baudelaire’s diaries, as a way to understand Baudelaire’s voice or vice versa. I have to instead tease out the play of different voices expressed in the text - in the famous example, how the lesbians in his lesbian poems are standing in for leading French cultural narratives about lesbianism (as an interminably escalating sinful desire), etc. and in only this way we can understand the text’s meaning.

Certainly this is true. But... aren’t there times when the author undeniably intrudes into the text? When I cannot grasp the text, as the reader, without grappling with the author? Here is one such moment: today I was reading Hemmingway’s the Killers. At a certain point, George says the n word. Then, the narrator says it. This is an event in the writing which immediately demands I respond on the level of the author: okay, okay, its issuing from the culture of white American Chicago 1920s social discourses, yada yada, I get it, but do I trust Hemmingway with that? Hemmingway, who goes trophy hunting in Cuba and who tours Africa and when he’s there, his wife records, dresses like a Masai girl when they fuck? What do I say in a conversation later when it comes up? Can I recommend it? Should I mention it? C’mon Barthes! I gotta think about it!

This sort of question became suddenly very relevant when fandom entered the online space, because those ways of engaging with a text - curation, recommendations, ranking and rating, etc. - were so much a part of the culture. Folding Ideas uses a nice paroday of a typical conversation in one of their videos, where somene says ‘I think the violence in Orcs Raping Anime Women was gratuitous’ and someone argues with them saying ‘the orcs do that because they’re made of pure evil’ - they make the point that someone, somewhere made the decision to write a story about evil orcs who rape women & that decision is subject to evaluation. Most of us have probably made an argument like this before. We have to see Barthes on the side of the guy who defends the show here, saying ‘its a play of signs between cultures...’! Folding Ideas is here arguing for the importance & centrality of the author, right? Their decisions & intentions inform what the work ‘says’.

You could potentially argue that this is about evaluating a work & not interpreting it but idk, if you take for example Tarantino’s films, yknow, I think if you don’t grapple with the fact that he has the guys say the n word 100 times because he has some kind of weird... lets not get into it (and this is something Tarantino certainly doesn’t intend to communicate); or that KoRn have so many songs about child sexual abuse because Davies is an abuse survivor, you can misinterpret what it says, or if you don’t know why he’s writing a song called ‘faggot’, right... or: without an awareness of what is being said how do you decide whether or not Campo de Exterminado by Holocausto is nazi propaganda or a threnody on the horrors of genocie? Or, generally, in any satire, without understanding, or at least entering the game of attempting to understand, what the author means, you surely misunderstand the text, or misengage with it. You know..?

Just took a look at Billythefridge's tweets. Like I get Billy isn't flat out saying "pedophilia and child grooming is a-okay," but seeing him refuse to fully condemn Greg and act like it was no big deal that he so adamantly defended him for so long is still pretty sad. Maybe a few anti-o's are taking things a bit too far, but it's pathetic seeing certain people try to paint us all as crazy when we were the only ones *actively and consistently* warning people about an obvious pedophile for years.

(Same anon) Alright, I thought about it a bit while making breakfast and maybe it wasn't super obvious to everyone that Onion was a pedophile. The rumors certainly reached many, but most people don't do their research. It just sucks when anti-o's tell people and give them proof that Greg is not someone you want to be friends with and they brush it off. I will give people like Jaclyn credit for calling him out after the Blaire video and I don't blame his exes for hiding after being hurt by him.

Yeah some anti-os I admit do go too far. Like that is a thing, I don’t remember seeing any personally but it’s here, we are a community full of a lot of people we are bound to get some bad apples. But trying to paint is ALL bad isn’t it chief. Just because a few people on Twitter are being dicks doesn’t mean ALL of us are dicks.

And yeah, the things about rumors. Fans and sometimes friends rather dismiss the rumors because:

They don’t wanna believe it.

The friends might have known X for a long time/IRL and know they wouldn’t do that.

Especially with someone with Greg who always has something going on, they rather ignore it since it doesn’t involve them; they don’t see it as a big deal, or they don’t care.

Like there are reasons why some people ignore or flat out dismiss rumors even with evidence. It’s like a “I don’t wanna believe it” thing for some. Though it is concerning, like with Ana or whatever that girls name is Greg collabs with. She said on Instagram to someone who asked her “why do you still associate with him.” And she basically said “get a life I have my own and you have yours.” It’s scary though because she has 3 kids, one 13 year old girl. Even dismissing that Greg admitted he left Madison’s child in a dirty diaper for a while because he didn’t want to be near “baby junk”. Like it’s a scary thing to hear....he’s a parent with a baby girl, and he said and did that to another parents baby girl?.....

Again I do get why Billy and other Greg friends don’t necessarily end it with Greg, through jt is super questionable due to the rumors and his history, and things he’s said straight up before... it’s just concerning overall. With Jaclyn yeah, I doubt she really kept up with anything as well as a lot of people when it comes to Greg. I’ll give her that. And the exes they needed time to heal so yeah of course.

I also think Billy won’t do anything or say anything, because Greg hasn’t done him wrong, why should he do him wrong yknow? Though it doesn’t mean he agrees with X and thinks it’s okay. I’m sure he thinks it’s wrong, but it is concerning he’s almost borderline defending someone of grooming a girl when she was 14 and he still associates with him. It’s always bad when you associate with evil.

Am I making sense? Basically I get why some people dismiss it, but it’s still scary in cases they do even with evidence. It could easily change but for now.... yikes.
