Sonic Shuffle: Reeling from the realization that his feelings for Amy are Not Completely Platonic. Is now wrapped around Amy’s finger, but the girl herself is unaware of this, just happy that Sonic is going shopping with her.
Sonic Adventure 2: Trying to deal with his Feelings™. Failing miserably.
Sonic Heroes: ok I’ve tried dealing with them. That isn’t gonna happen anymore. Sure would be bad for my denial if Amy came up to me proposing marriage.

Sonic: O-oh
Amy: Wanna go out?
Sonic: That…. that could be fun
Amy:!!!!
SATBK: Oh th-thats today. oh. Well I’d better… how do ppl do these things? Well, we didn’t exactly plan anything too big… Wait I can bring food! Yeah… Amy likes chili dogs right? *trips into portal and goes thru cutscene* Well thats a bust. And I’m late. Greeaat. What are the odds that Amy will be in the King Arthur tale?
Nimue: Hi
Sonic: AAAA PLS DONT KILL ME I DIDN’T oh you’re a doppelganger. In a very pretty dress. Oh no. Well, she’s TECHNICALLY Amy so I could… *flirts with a confused Nimue*
*two hours later* Anyways thats why I was late:)
Amy: ITS BAD ENOUGH THAT YOU STOOD ME UP BUT MAKING UP EXCUSES AND NOT EVEN APOLOGIZING??? ✨🔨✨
Sonic: PUT THAT DOWN IM NOT LYING!!!
And it ends how it started, with a pink hedgehog chasing a blue hedgehog.

Hello there, love your blog, it's one of my favourite ones, I had a question... I read a comment that said Amy is no longer interested on Sonic anymore and that this is shown on frontiers, that they will make their own paths and lives, is this true?
Hey, anon! I'm glad you enjoy my blog! 🥰💙
No, no, Amy is definitely still madly in love with Sonic 🤭😁 The main reason she's been acting more tame and not so open about it is really just due to character development/maturity. According to Sega, "she's not [physically] chasing after Sonic anymore, but he's still #1 in her heart!" 💙🩷
Sonic Frontiers actually has a decent amount of Sonamy content, but moreso if you squint. 😁 First of all, it tends to address the situation more from Sonic's end, in his moments of saying romance-coded things like "Wish we were sharing an umbrella, Amy," and "Amy, I should've made up my mind sooner." 🥹
Sonic has always been shy about his feelings and therefore never said anything about said feelings to her, and he's more of an "actions speak louder than words" type of guy, but as she shared her desires to share her love with the world, he worried a little that he may have lost his chance. However, Frontiers also makes clear that his friends' plans to go on their own paths were not permanent. Especially seen in Amy's case when she told Sonic her plans, and Sonic replied, "I'm sure you'll do great. I wanna hear all about it when you get back!" 💙
As a bonus, the Final Horizons update treated us to a bit more Sonamy content as well. 🤩 In a conversation between Amy and Sage, Sage identified Amy as "the one who admires Sonic." Amy, with a bit of her younger behavior slipping out, replied with no shortage of sass, "Oh. And are you a fellow admirer? Hm?" 😂
There were a few conversations between Sonic and Amy, during one of which Sonic tried to tell Amy to take care of herself as well as the Koco. Amy ruefully retorted that she could say the exact same thing back to him. Sonic admitted that she got him there, and confidently stated that they would get through this together.
And of course, after all this, my favorite Sonamy moment of the whole game. After everything was over, his friends were restored, and he reunited with them.
Tumblr media
The way Amy laughed and practically launched herself into his arms, Sonic's surprised little "oh!" but the way he welcomed the hug, and kept one arm around her as he high fived Tails and fist bumped Knuckles. 🥰 First of all, it's so obvious Amy had been dying to do that the whole game, and we can imagine it was tough on Sonic to be touch-deprived for an extended period of time once again (after the Metal Virus).
I think the main reason Amy didn't run to hug him when he freed her was because she immediately saw he was somehow struggling and likely didn't want to hurt him. (But then realized she wouldn't have been able to touch him, anyway. 🥲) Although it would've been kinda funny if she HAD tried to hug him and just fell straight through. 😂
I think it's worth noticing that Sonic has had this response to Amy's hugs several times lately. Instead of avoiding them, he lets her hug him and actually puts an arm around her in return. I've got a couple more examples from IDW.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyhoo haha, I think I got a little carried away. 😂 I hope this answers your question! Thank you for the ask! 💙

Since I started being part of the Sonic fandom and the Sonamy fandom i've noticed both of them had quite simmilar misunderstoods towards amy's character.
And it's... Amy never was created to be an "obssesive girl" "an obssesive fangirl" "an obssesive girl who only thinks about Sonic and nothing else"
And this is a consequence of the bad localization Sonic had in the West and how they didn't understand Amy's character, a girl who was created with many qualities japanese people love but the west considers it "weird", still affects her character to this day at this point we're many hear by mouth and mouth how Amy is but never had the thought of thinking "all of this is true?"
Look at this comparison between japanese!Sonic and American!Sonic and how different they treat Amy (minute 1:50 - 3:29)
https://youtu.be/PiSVTpRCGXA?si=cF_eEzFO5N3BPFQO
Thanks to this majority of western fans thought Sonic was always mad at Amy when in reality that was not the original intention and destroys all the concept of "obssesive" and "fangirl" were she cared for birdie and protected Gama from Sonic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A girl who always tries to be better, helping people many wouldn't pay attention but she knows they need help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A girl who is conscious she has to work hard than his friends with super powers
Tumblr media
And Sonic being one of her main inspirations 'cause he represents what she wants to become: being free, going on your own having adventures, the excitement everything against the boring
And you would say "but in heroes she was an obssesive fangirl😭"
No, the fandom scaled the proportions and couldn't handle a single innofensive joke
Amy knew exactly exactly what she was doing telling him to "Marry him" as a joke. He would low his defenses and cause him to feel embarrassed and nervous 'cause she knows he's terrible at romance or i'm general, feelings
And many forgot that in the game Amy didn't know exactly why Sonic, Tails and knuckles we're together. In the beggining Amy saw Sonic in the paper and told us she hasn't seen Sonic in weeks and when she saw them thought they were just hanging out.
I'm talking about the girl who all the game supported, encouraging Cream and Big to rescue Chocola and Froggy and they needed someone as determinante, courageous as Amy who reminded her friends how brave they are
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
She even shows appreciation and love for the landscapes (just like Sonic)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"But- but in later games she was so obssesive and fangirl for Sonic 😭" Again bad localization for the west when in the original sources she was handled bit better than the West.
Also, Western has an obssesive to always point out the bad interpretations of female characters and saying why they are "the worst" "the most annoying characters" when at the same time try so hard to prove why this interpretation of a male character is not "bad enough" or "not the worst" and why even with bad characterizations he is still the best **cough****cough** Sonic and shadow respectively **cough****cough**
The character is not perfect, that's a reality.
She has strenghts and flaws that made her unique on her own. Her love for her friends (yes, this includes Sonic), the animals, the good and "Bad" robots and even characters who we're "devil"... She saw good, hope and love for them. She decides to help them being at their sides to show them there's always the option to chose a good path
She is the heart of all teams, she brings happines and hope to everyone. That's why all the cast loves and appreciates her and never refered to her like fandom does. That should tell you something
Tumblr media
Personally I don't agree with the idea of "Amy is not an obssesive girl anymore and now she is a strong cute girl" when she has a l w a y s been a strong cute, bubbly, sassy, kinda bratty, compassive, energetic, silly girl but many think this is new when it's always been in front of you, you just decided to finally see the character and not prejuices

Rare But Not So Rare Sonic Moments
Sonic Swooning Over Amy
So, Sonic’s been kind of the driving force of Sonamy recently. Let’s analyze that.
Tumblr media
I’ll show Sonic having feelings for Amy in almost every media aside from Fleetway and the few cartoons she isn’t in. I’ll also present the “whys” in more detail then just “Amy calmed down.” While that’s part of it, I’d like to add my own can of worms. And possible headcanons too. Bear in mind I never grew up with Sonic, so forgive my mixed opinions.
While I love Amy having a crush on Sonic like the energetic sugarplum she is, nowadays Sonic’s oddly been the drive of their dynamic. Any examples of it beforehand? Let’s look outside of the games first.
Sonic X
This Sonic takes more time to himself. He’s introverted, so his feelings for her isn’t displayed as obviously as the others. In fact, most people think he didn’t like her in this show because of how much he runs away. He even manipulated her by flirting in one episode. In my opinion this show has Sonic running away from Amy more often than not. Hot take: Sonic and Amy never had a real conversation either. They didn’t…talk like they do now. Unless you count,
“Oh, Sonic I love you!” “Ah! C’mon, Amy. Knock it off!” No, it wasn’t constant but still common.
Tumblr media
From my point of view, the conversations were short lived to none existent. It was the same in the earlier games too. Compared to how they talked to other characters or now, you might be able to notice. At least until Sonic And The Black Night where he talks to both The Lady Of The Lake and Amy. The two would also have visual gags of Sonic getting aggressively hugged by Amy. Or Amy falling on her face while trying. Aside from one moment in Sonic Riders where Sonic put Amy in danger, it wasn’t good or bad. Just cartoony for lack of a better term.
Maybe I’m just insane. You decided.
Anyhow, their dynamic in X is clearly built on actions. Like Amy giving Sonic a seashell bracelet and Sonic giving her a rose. Those little things. While I do prefer them being able to hold longer conversations, I don’t mind how X handles them. But let’s get to Sonic’s crush. I assume in Sonic X Sonic is conflicted. He’ll run away from Amy or try to pull from her on most occasions and others Sonic would constantly hold onto her when he doesn’t have to. For a long period on time no less. Amy’s the same way. One moment she’d be head over heels and other she’s bashful. Goes to show how young they were I guess. I have no clue as to why Sonic liked her back because there wasn’t much to go off of. Except the bracelet moment or her general kindness like feeding him one time. She was a bit much to him and most characters back then.
It’s possible Sonic just liked her and that was it, but I’d imagine due to all of the hand holding and small reciprocated gestures were enough to convey something was there. Straight forward and simple like the show itself. I headcanon this Sonamy being where the boyfriend gets dragged into a relationship and is fine with it. This version of Sonic’s attraction seems to be chaotic pink hedgehogs apparently.
Sonic Boom
Should I even explain it? Might as well because not only do I have something different to say, but these two haven’t been brought up much. Sonic and Amy’s romance mostly is played for laughs. Not saying their love for each other means less because of that, but the humor is the main reason they exist. Much like why in the main canon they started out the way they did. Regardless, I’ll dive deeper into Boom!Sonic’s affection for Amy to the best of my ability.
Tumblr media
Boom!Sonic is egotistical, so whenever he thinks Amy’s crushing on someone else, it bothers him. Apparently he’s the only one she’s allowed to like. No “Radical Speedsters” or “Celebrities” can take her attention away from him. Like in Sonic X he tries to keep his crush to a minimum. Even though both him and Amy are terrible at it.
The moment in “Fortress Of Squalitude” a episode where everyone is a bit rude to Amy, close to the end Sonic says, “We may have a hard time saying it Amy. But…well you know.” Then she responds with, “Yeah, I know.” It’s such a sweet moment. Not as powerful as most moments with them but for Boom it’s very nice. Sonic and the others still value her as part of the team, but it’s Sonic who expresses it out loud. Goes to show how much he cares about her for even attempting to open up in this instance. Didn’t even have to finish the sentence. Amy understood perfectly. I also noticed how much he tries his best to impress her. When he needs to return her book back, finds her hammer in Archie, (Vector did it in the show and Sonic got jealous) shows off randomly or dreams about her, and stopped racing to get her some eggs in one episode.
The funny thing about this Sonic is how much of a people pleaser he can be. Especially since the towns people are very spoiled and ungrateful. He wants to be needed and that’s possibly why he goes out of his way to do special things for Amy like go out on picnics, implied dates, and comforts her. She’s very take charge in Boom and Sonic has no problem calling her out when he needs to. Much like Amy in the show and games. Sonic will even put effort into doing things he doesn’t feel like doing for her. How honorable of him. Sure, sometimes he tries to make her jealous and isn’t perfect, but he tries. I believe Sonic likes Amy because again like Sonic X Boom isn’t canon, so more outright reciprocated feelings are allowed in this case. Not to mention the dude likes being shipped with her in the show. Which is a win in my book.
Sonic enjoys bugging Amy much like a playful boyfriend. He probably admires her leadership, but I’m saying this by observation. It could be for anything. Maybe he thinks she’s cute when she’s mad and finds her temper amusing. It could also be for her stubbornness. Some people like each other because of how much they can relate to their partner and in Sonic Boom’s case they’re two cuts of the same cloth. Although still different, due to the show’s theme, they carry the same condescending, slightly self centered, hotheaded, stubborn, and humorous traits. But they’re still good hedgehogs with a heart of gold and usually makes reasonable decisions. Not to mention they’re both equally shy about their crushes. In Sonic Boom, Sonic and Amy is that married couple who doesn’t get along much, but when they do you’ll understand why they stay together.
Reboot Archie Sonic
I haven’t read the comics (unless you count watching a few dubs and internet reviews) but I’ll give my limited thoughts. Luckily there’s not much to say. Although most people believe it was unintentional, I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch that someone from Archie thought it was a fun idea to have Sonic crush on somone in this reboot. Maybe it’s unintentional but it doesn’t seem that way.
Tumblr media
I’m basically using this part of the post to ramble about how Reboot Archie’s Sonic still manages to be a casanova. He’s like a mixture of his old self and how he is in the games. That’s also why he acts the way he does around Amy. Could it also possibly mean he’s meant to like her canonically too? Reboot Archie did have to follow a more accurate way of writing Sonic after all. Anyways, let’s run down the list of Game!Sonic if he was allowed to be down bad for Amy like they’re already dating. Which is how I view this continuity. It’s basically if Boom and X had a weird fusion and this version of Sonic’s crush was the result. Except here he manages to be more bold and upfront. He knows what he’s doing. Here’s a run down.
First of all, THIS. No joke, more of these interactions would send me to the moon. I would explain why but the panel speaks for itself.
Tumblr media
Sonic says, “I was worried about you.” Which he hasn’t admitted to her before this to my knowledge. He states this by giving her a side hug. Along with other out of nowhere physical affection and flirting. Not to single out Sonally fans. Sonic and Sally clearly have a close connection people appreciate and I respect that. In any case, Sonic and Amy in Reboot Archie also matches energies so much. They’re both clearly running off the same brain cell. You’d think they were together. They’d be a chaotic couple that’ll do the most outlandish things and somehow manage to survive them. After willfully risking their lives they’d do it again because being normal and safe is boring. I promise you, this version of Sonamy would be a huge force to be reckoned with.
-I’d also like to mention my friend Salty showed an example of Sonic being jealous of Knuckles coming with Amy on a mission and it’s brilliant. Dude gets all bratty about it too. Archie!Sonic does not play around. The post in question.
Sonic Prime
Already talked about this in another post, but I want to mention it again. Prime!Sonic is the most sensitive version of the character, so it’s no surprise he displays his admiration for Amy freely and out loud.
This moment says enough on its own. Sonic’s like this throughout the entirety of Prime and even changes the tone of his voice when speaking to or about her. It’s so authentic and adorable and makes him stand out against other variants.
Tumblr media
Amy’s crush on Sonic in Prime is up to interpretation, but I don’t think she likes him in that way personally. Like other characters, Amy tends to be done with Sonic’s childishness. Guess she thinks he’s probably too immature to be boyfriend material whether she has feelings or not. Sonic on the other hand, acts how you wouldn’t expect. I personally see him as his own interpretation, so I’m fine with it. If he wants to have goo-goo eyes for Amy in Prime, it’s cool.
Prime!Sonic has it bad and I wouldn’t be shocked if he’d be the one wanting to go out on dates. Maybe he’d cook dinner for her sense he cooks in the show. I’d imagine Amy declining at first, but does it after his constant begging. They’d be swapped version of most emotional to least emotional. Prime!Amy would be a girlfriend who feels more like a parent than a partner.
Unleashed/Black Night
No one can bring up Sonic Unleashed without the lovely Amy meeting the Werehog scene. I love how Sonic didn’t like Amy hugging him, but right after she left he solemnly mopes around for probably the first and last time. He’s never in any game slowly moped around disappointedly before. Proving he only has certain reactions when it comes to Amy Rose. At least in some continuities. Unleashed gives you a choice to go on a date with Amy or not. Then the next game Sonic Team followed through with it, but ended up having Amy mad at Sonic for missing it. At least Sonic tried. Not to mention his reaction to The Lady Of The Lake and him flirting is fun to watch.
Tumblr media
See how Sonic still likes her back but it isn’t because she’s “calmed down?” She’s still the same excitable love strucked Amy. There must be something more to it. Other than the obvious answer with Sonic Team wanting to do something with the pear. I have no idea why but having multiple hints even in the past must’ve been done for the fun of it. “We created this love interest but then railed back to Sonic not reciprocating her feeling. But we still want to market them as a couple in some way.” This franchise never cease to confuse me.
Amy encouraging Sonic in one of the cutscenes could’ve been where he started liking her back. Not in the way he does now, but he admired her none stop compassion and might’ve wanted to return the favor. “Eh, she’s sweet. Maybe a date won’t be so bad.” The fact he went out of his way to get her a chilidog and flirted with a different version of her should tell you enough. Of course it would take a while before anything else happened.
IDW/Sonic Frontiers
Yeah, after issue 2, Sonic’s never felt the need to run from Amy. From the comics to Sonic Frontiers there’s a lot of moments of Sonic being somewhat emotionally candid. Not by much, but close. I believe Amy’s the reason for that in a way. Sonic’s not afraid to hang out with her anymore. He even hugs her back on some occasions. “Ames” was a nickname from fanfics and Boom which became canon over time and he occasionally calls her that.
Tumblr media
Sonic wishes to share an umbrella and spend more time with her. He also gets excited to see her more often. It’s like Reboot Archie but slightly toned down. At least up until the hard to trigger lines from Sonic Frontiers. The same game where he outright admits to being worried about Amy and smiles back at her with a Coco looking between the two. Then he supports Amy’s decision to leave etc. We all know where we are now.
Crazy how the more you look into this franchise the more tiny details you notice. It’s also crazy how much Sonic’s been into the love interest he originally was already supposed to love. To me, Sonic had a crush on Amy in Unleashed but fell in love with her in IDW. What makes Sonamy gripping though is how unique it is compared to most romantic relationships. Leaves it to be more entertaining whenever something unexpected happenes. It keeps you engaged.
Why Sonic Crushes On Amy?
1. Amy doesn’t want to slow him down. Obviously because of IDW issue 2’s love confession with Amy saying “I can’t change you. I don’t want to change you.” Amy joins Sonic and he includes her more often because of that. His speed is no match for her persistence anyways.
2. She shows compassion and love for those around her. Not just to Sonic, but everyone. She’s the definition of soft hearted. Even for people Sonic and his friends would be weary about. Think about now in the recent comics and games where Sonic’s trying it out. I do think it should be more of Amy’s thing then Sonic’s but it just goes to show how much she probably inspired him. Who knows? Even in the past he had respect Amy for her tenderheartedness.
Tumblr media
3. Amy’s energy matches Sonic’s. Though sometimes she can be overly enthusiastic compared to him. Even before now, Amy’s always been adventurous and that’s probably something Sonic liked from the start. Not in a romantic way, but in a respectful way. If he were to have a partner he’d need someone to keep him grounded and be on the same level. No exceptions.
4. Her loyalty. No matter what Sonic does (including times she disagrees) she’s one of Sonic’s most loyalist companions. Obviously other characters are too, but Amy has her being a long time childhood friend/Sonic 06 and Unleashed going for her. 06 for trusting Sonic over Silver and Unleashed for still loving Sonic despite his transformation. Heck, before she knew who the Werehog was she wasn’t disgusted. Amy’s commendable for that.
From all these points here physical attraction isn’t included. What I like about both characters is their crushes don’t stem to how they look. Though it is worth mentioning Sonic has called Amy “Radiant” in TMOSTH, but that’s probably the closest we’ll ever get to an outright physical compliment. From Sonic at least.
- Side note thanks to @saltynsassy31 again, Sonic and Amy’s dynamic can be summed up as not a relationship but rather a situationship. Yes, it’s a real word. What does it mean? Basically two friends who has crushes on each other but doesn’t do anything about it. Just a fun detail for you guys.
Why Did Sonic Run From Amy In The Past?
I’ll make this quick, but the reason Sonic ran from Amy wasn’t because he didn’t like her. On the contrary. Sonic always could’ve ran at his normal speed to get away from her. Sonic’s the fastest thing alive. Why would he let someone he “didn’t like” catch up to him? I personally think he enjoyed the thrill of the chase. It’s why I believe he misses it nowadays. Though I do understand Sonic didn’t often treat Amy like a friend. Not in a way I can understand at least. Not that I think their relationship was bad, but from what I’ve seen, it was more told then shown due to Sonic and the gang not including her on missions. Amy normally had to catch up with them which was a running gag. Especially in SA2. It might be why some prefere her in stuff like Reboot Archie, Boom, IDW, and Frontiers. Because Amy’s friends includes her on adventures now. At least in my opinion. Correct me if I missed anything.
Final Headcanon
Since Sonic in the games has been the one to push the Sonic side of Sonamy much more then Amy does for herself, I’d like to think in most cases (especially as their dynamic grows) Sonic would start carrying other versions of him traits like trying to mess with her.
Tumblr media
He’d want to get her to chase him more often and Amy would probably ask once or twice, “What’s going on and why are you acting weird?” He’d definitely play it off as him fooling around. Sonic doesn’t know much about romance, but he does know what Amy likes. Maybe he’d ask her out or go on a bunch of traveling missions. Anything to get her to pay attention to him again. After all, there’s been examples of the guy feeling ignored by her in and out of canon. It’s possible.
-There’s also a consistent detail where Sonic’s finally ready to open up but has to deal with Amy doing her own thing. Or when he’s face with different variants of her, he’s flirtatious with them. For the fastest thing alive, he has terrible timing when it comes to making his mind up.
Conclusion
Welp, there you have it, darlings. Examples of Sonic crushing on Amy more than some would think. It’s a Sonic character analysis and Sonamy post all in one. I know there’s more, but I think this gathers examples from the actual content.
Stay Creative! 💜

Do you think it’s in-character for Sonic to like Amy back? I’m curious because some may think it’s not. I’d love to know your thoughts!
HELLO ANON IM GLAD YOU ASKED I HAVE AN EXCUSE TO RANT ABOUT SONIC’S CHARACTER BC I LOVE HIM A LOT AND I FEEL LIKE NO ONE REALLY WANTS TO THINK ABOUT HIM ON HIS OWN!!
short answer: absolutely BUT whether it’s in-character depends on the way his feelings are portrayed.
long answer: Have you ever wondered why everyone has their own personal love language? In this essay I will-
anyway
let’s take a step back and just overview sonic’s character a little bit:
Tumblr media
(amy got him those…btw)
Essentially, at his core, Sonic is a character who values his freedom and the freedom of others at his very core. His main drive to keep moving is motivated by his love for adventure and that thrill of adventure. Romance is never and will never be his top priority, it’ll always be adventure, so y’all gotta understand that first. But his friends come to a close second.
And that’s where the line between romance and friendship starts to blur a little bit. What do I mean by that?
Well let’s look at his relationship with Amy purely as a platonic relationship: Sonic and Amy are the best of friends.
Argue with the wall if you don’t agree idgaf
Tumblr media
They hang out quite a bit more than Sonic does with other characters, and Amy is the closest non-sibling relationship that Sonic has. Tails is his little brother; yes they’re close and yes they hang out a lot, but again it’s a very sibling-like bond. That’s not necessarily a bad thing and I’m not dismissing it—I really, REALLY appreciate Tails and Sonic’s relationship. It’s very cute and a very mutual thing in my opinion. A lot of people might say that Sonic only inspires Tails while Tails provides gadgets and brainpower for Sonic, but that’s just not true. FOR ONE SONIC’S CANON IQ LEVEL IS LIKE 178 IF IIRC HE’S SMART GUYS. HE DOES NOT NEED TAILS TO BE HIS BRAIN. HE MADE HIS OWN FRICKING PLANE. But Tails is the person he can always rely on and pretty much talk to about anything. PRETTY much. But there’s also that small underlying role model that Sonic should be for Tails to some extent, because he is Tails’ older brother.
Knuckles is #2 out of Sonic’s closest friends, and his main role is being a rival/challenge to sonic without being a threat to him. They’re still extremely close friends who would die for each other after all. They bicker and Sonic does love to tease knuckles quite a bit since knux is so quick to get angry. But they still respect each other and know that they can rely on each other. Also lowkey they’re kinda the not-so-friendly homie relationship; if tails and sonic are wholesome homies, knux and sonic are the “we beat each other up /aff” homies
and then we have Amy. Sonic’s closest female friend. genuinely argue with the wall if you can’t see that. SONIC DOES NOT HATE AMY HE VALUES HER AS A FRIEND AND CLOSE COMRADE sorry i hate people who say sonic can’t stand amy are you guys THAT media illiterate
So Amy is the closest thing that Sonic has to a friend who is a complete equal to Sonic, and let me explain why I say that AMY is his equal, and not someone like Metal Sonic or Shadow.
First off, Amy is not in any way a rival to Sonic. Sure she’s been paired against him multiple times in Team Sonic vs Team Rose, but it’s all on friendly terms and sillies. Second, she’s the one of the ONLY character who shares the exact same thirst for adventure that Sonic does. Heck i’m pretty sure one of her opening lines in Sonic Adventure was something along the lines of “it’s so boring when Sonic’s not around.” She doesn‘t care much for a normal, mundane lifestyle anymore than Sonic does. yes she’s a little more grounded than Sonic is in general and likes doing stationary things like baking and gardening, but she still gets bored easily. Her idea of fun can consist of picking flowers or decimating badniks (i love her sm)
Tumblr media
Lastly there’s no strings attached to her love for Sonic, she just loves him for who he is and who he inspires her to be. Her favorite thing about him is his free spirit, which heaven forbid she ever tie down. The second she expressed that to Sonic, he was IMMEDIATELY became much more comfortable around her, because he understood where she was coming from and what her true intentions were. After that he started hanging out with her way more often and he was also really comfortable with her in general (i’m talking specifically about the idw comics here). He can talk to her about just about any problem because she understands; she’s been with him much longer than most others. Bro she was introduced before Knuckles, technically speaking…and she’s gone through the same experiences and adventures that he has. The only thing that Tails has different from Amy in terms of being able to talk about problems is that in the past I feel like Sonic has wanted to protect Tails from certain things (though this seems to have changed in Frontiers with Tails’ whole thing being more independent and growing up) but he really doesn’t have to do that with Amy because he doesn’t have the same older sibling urges if ykwim.
tldr: amy’s sonic’s bestie that is most like him who’s also on equal footing with him
Tumblr media
(rip tails in the bg)
Okay then, now let’s talk rOmAnCE
Sonic’s history in the romance department has been….messy to say the least. Always baffles me because Amy has been right there the whole time…
And it seems to me that each time Sonic is depicted in a steady, strong relationship, at least some part of his core character is sacrificed for that. I feel like this is especially evident in the Archie Comics, like, you mean to tell me Sonic willingly accepts becoming king and staying tied to a kingdom?? Like that’s not inherently wrong but that’s definitely not game Sonic—that is Archie Sonic AND THATS FINE. its just a different iteration of Sonic, like how movie Sonic is drastically different from game Sonic
Tumblr media
yeah this?? i hate this. a lot. why was he such a ladies’ man in the pre-reboot archie comics 😭 ALSO DONT TELL HIM TO SLOW DOWN STOP THAT
DONT KILL ME HANG ON, I ACTUALLY LIKE REBOOT SONALLY. I THINK ITS VERY CUTE
Tumblr media
this? this is adorable and feels like sonic⬆️
Tumblr media
this?? sorry i cant take it seriously
im not talking about sonelise tyvm
And that’s why I don’t even like the idea of sonic really settling down with amy perse idk if that’s a hot take 🫣
he needs someone who’s willing to basically either drop everything and travel wherever he goes or be willing to tag along whenever needed even if they’re busy, and amy does that pretty well
Amy doesn’t mind following Sonic to the ends of the earth and to hell and back if needed. which sonic team knew exactly what they were doing crafting her character to fit sonic’s its literally a match made in heaven aksjfnhehgfrlsfnegraojvr
Anyways’s the big question:
Is it in character for Sonic to like Amy?
Well why don’t we look at a few examples where his feelings are either strongly hinted at or outright shown
Ima start with Frontiers cause it’s the most recent mainline content we have
I hope we all know about the (scrapped?) open-world voicelines…
Tumblr media
”Wish we were sharing an umbrella Amy…”
…sir?? sonic?? sonic the hedgehog?????? WOULD YOU LIKE TO REPEAT THAT-
sonic is originally japanese. sharing an umbrella in japan means you’re a couple. i rest my case.
Tumblr media
I REST MY CASE
Tumblr media
do i. even have to elaborate.
thanks sonic for being so dense for 3 decades😒
so essentially that indicates that he HAS made up his mind now? and it’s pretty obvious as to what considering the way he treated her pretty much the entirety of Frontiers
mostly the thing with frontiers sonic is that all of this is to himeslf, like a soliloquy…more on that in a sec
~
We could talk about the IDW comics but most of that is a little too subtle for me to call really “returning the feelings” and im lowkey too lazy to go find the panels im thinking of so maybe i’ll do that some other time
however i’ll just leave this:
Tumblr media
casual familiarity how i adore you (HE JUST GRABS HER NO SECOND THOUGHTS IM CRYING)
~
you think i was gonna make a long essay post on sonamy and not talk about sonic x?? did you?? DID YA???
Tumblr media
*explodes*
HOW IS IT THAT THIS WAS LIKE IN 2003 AND WE STILL HAVENT GOTTEN A BETTER SONAMY MOMENT THAN THIS ITS TRULY TIMELESS…
BIG INHALE OKAY SO i think the major takeaways from this are
This is a private moment
Amy matters a LOT to Sonic
Sonic’s not one for words but rather actions
One, yeah, this is something that is special to Amy and Sonic, to the point where even the audience doesn’t know what he said to her because its muted (stellar choice in my opinion because it adds a lot more weight to them) but its pretty obvious that he either said “Aishiteru, Emi” or “Daisuki, Emi”, both of which mean “i love you Amy” on a pretty deep level. But the point is that its between them and between them only. Even later in season 3 when Amy talks about it, she’s deliberately cut off before she can repeat what Sonic said to her that day. Obviously this isn’t supposed to be public knowledge
Two, the context is that Sonic has literally been stuck on another planet for quite some time, and most people either gave up on him ever returning or thought he was dead. But not Amy. And guess what? The first place he goes to—he literally BEELINES there as Super Sonic—is straight to Amy’s house. He wanted to see her first and likely reassure him that he was okay because he knew that she’d be worried sick. Also I think he just missed her in general…
Three, he knows what a white (or lavender idc) rose means and deliberately chose that flower to give to her upon his return. And again with the muted words, his actions speak louder to us as an audience than a simple “i looooove you amyyy” and this is generally a common theme with Sonic, especially in Sonic X (probably the most accurate representation of Sonic outside the games).
btw this can be taken as platonic but man do i want to yap about it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
amy KNOWS sonic can’t swim and even in her barely conscious state she tells him to basically leave her for dead. HIS SAFETY IS STILL HER TOP PRIORITY. but does sonic listen? nahhh. there were literally hundreds of other people perfectly capable of rescuing amy but noooo he went in and dove after her because HIS top priority was HER safety
again, actions speak louder than words
also the whole thing how he didn’t just restring the bracelet she made him, no, her tied a new string to the original ones and went and got more shells?? that are found next to his biggest fear??? yeah that speaks volumes about how much he treasures that lil gift of hers
Tumblr media
lastly its kind of small but i really appreciate how he just lets her hug him and reciprocates too? it’s very adorable
so more sonamy huggies for the soul <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE “AMES” GET ME EVERYTIME AAAAAAAAAAA
and actually sonic doesn’t really do physical intimacy that isn’t teasing, like remember when TAILS’ GIRLFRIEND JUST D I E D AND HE DIDNT HUG HIM (i have a bone to pick with sonic here)..
Tumblr media
idk sonic is generally a not very emotional character; he can’t cry, he doesn’t get angry, he can’t blush, all these mandates indicating he keeps his emotions to himself
the largest range of emotions we see in sonic are whenever he’s with amy; confusion, fear, embarassment, flusteredness, etc.
~
most other iterations of sonic are some sort of au or canon divergent so i wont talk about those buuut lmk if i missed something im sure i did
SO. IN CONCLUSION.
what have we learned? (i sound like a teacher)
Sonic values freedom over everything
amy doesn’t want to take away Sonic’s freedom, she wants to join him
Sonic doesn’t mind Amy’s affection as long as she’s not overwhelming
sonic is pretty private when it comes to his feelings or intimate moments with amy or anything else really
and i have one final thing that i want to bring up to drive my point home that some people may not take as canon but hey it exists
Tumblr media
well there you go! that’s sonic’s characterization. yes he likes amy but isn’t showy about it. that’s essentially what i’ve been building up to.
he’s not gonna go yell to the world that he loves his girlfriend sososososo much but like in private? hell yeah (though rn its more like they both know that amy loves sonic, duh, but they also both know that sonic likes amy and they’re just chilling with it, not quite dating but two friends that know they like each other)
And me personally? i like to see them as top notch battle couple with an hair tearing amount of romantic tension lol cause yeah thats my jammm
oh and then theres boom sonamy with the most amount of sexual tension ive ever seen between cartoon hedgehogs
So to answer your question directly: yes it’s in character for sonic to like amy as long as it’s mostly a private thing between him and her <3
my lang teacher wishes i could write with this much passion on my argumentative essays
ok bye thanks for coming to my ted talk have an absopositively splenderrific day 🙈

"The body language was intentional." Body Language Difference Between Sonic & Amy vs. Sonic & Tails
Although the DC x Sonic the Hedgehog 4 part mini series is non canon to the mainline story (as far as we know at least...) in one of the previews we got for the first issue we get a moment where we see Sonic grab Tails and Amy for a retreat.
However the difference in how he grabs them is interesting enough to warrant a post of its own.
Tumblr media
ABT (Adam Bryce Thomas, artist for the crossover) said the body language was intentional and later on went on to elaborate that Sonic is simply being more gentle with one than the other and that he's not interested in shipping theories nor does he have any personal stake in that realm of fandom. He just said that it'd be more in character for him to have a little tact.
First off: HARD AGREE!
Like don't get me wrong, I've been a Sonamy shipper since I was in Middle School when Sonic X was still on 4Kids TV and SA2 was on the Game Cube but I'm against shipping theories / fan shipping wars getting heated between fans. Like y'all lets calm down these are fictional characters.
Secondly: I'm making this post specifically to talk about the body language in terms of how Sonic personally interacts with Amy vs. Tails in different situations. Because they're both close to Sonic but their bonds differ to an extent. So this is really my excuse to talk about something I've wanted to for a while.
Whether you ship Sonamy platonically, romantically, or you just consider them to be friends. I hope you can at least appreciate the observations in this post. Because it also has some appreciation for Sonic & Tails brotherly relationship as well.
So let's start off with the above body language in question and focus strictly on the hands.
Tumblr media
The lines in the panel signify the strength of the grip he has on Amy's hand vs. Tails' wrist. With Amy, Sonic is holding onto her hand gently yet with enough grip to get her attention and to draw her close. While his grip on Tails' wrist is more firm with more like a "Get over here!" level of urgency to it. They both convey the same intention yet Sonic's touch differs depending on the person. Which it should because you don't act the same way towards everyone regardless of who they are 100% of the time. Sonic's no different. Sonic has always been protective of Amy and Tails but with Amy he won't physically harm her or act aggressively with her unless it's for her safety (Like pushing her out of harms way or keeping her from running into danger). So his gentle hold of Amy's hand is a good example of that level of softness he treats her with even though he knows how she's able to handle herself. With his grip on Tails' wrist, it's done in a way that screams "Brothers" to me. The older brother pulling his little brother out of harms way and getting his attention when he's too focused on the wrong thing at the wrong time. He's not being as gentle with him because sometimes Tails requires a bit more force to get his attention when he's invested in what he's doing. But the intention is still the same: Getting him out of danger and taking him along with Amy out of danger.
Next we have this scene from the main series:
Tumblr media
Now in this scene, as they're confronting Eggman, the body language between the three of them says a lot more about their feelings in the moment. Sonic is ready to fight and protect, Amy is slightly concerned for Sonic, and Tails is nervous but ready to fight by Sonic's side to stop Eggman. The difference between this scene in the previous scene however boils down to Tails' junction to Sonic in the situation. Instead of being brought out of a situation, Tails is preparing himself to work as a tag team with Sonic or provide backup in a fight. For a while now Tails has been wanting to prove he can be useful to Sonic and help him on his adventures. Which is one of the big motivations for him in the first Sonic Adventure game that rolls into SA2. Most recently in Sonic Frontiers he's expressed his desire to be a hero that Sonic can be proud of, that doesn't need to rely on his help 100% of the time anymore. Which Sonic encourages but reminds him that growing up is learning also that it's OK to rely on others even when you're capable of being a hero that helps everyone. One way that Sonic is letting Tails grow into his own hero is by letting him fight with him and on his own two feet (or in his case with his two tails). Now when you focus on Sonic's body language with Amy close by, he's taking more of a defensive stance with her. Again, even though he knows damn well that she's very capable of handling herself with that hammer of hers, he is still very protective of her. One of his arms is slightly in front of her and he's positioning himself for an attack but he's also capable of taking the full brunt of Eggman's attack if he has a weapon or robot shoot at them. Just because Amy is capable of defending herself that doesn't mean that Sonic will stand by and let her be attacked.
One more scene from the mainline series and then I wanna wrap up this post by talking about the inherent difference between Sonic's relationships with Tails and Amy.
Tumblr media
After everything is said and done with the Phantom Rider arc, when they all prepare to head home, Sonic puts his hands around Tails and Amy as they smile and leave together. The thing I want to point out is, similar to the difference in where Sonic grabs them in the DC crossover first issue, Sonic's hand placement is tactful yet at the same time very indicative of his relationships with them. Albeit maybe even a little subconsciously. With Tails his arm is wrapped around his shoulder with his hand wrapped around his arm. Very big brother like and sweet, the clear difference in height is also more pronounced in this interaction. Overall if you were to look at them acting like this and Amy wasn't there it gives the air of two brothers who just got done on an adventure. But when you look at his hold on Amy, you can tell Sonic has a different kind of relationship with her compared to Tails. First off his arm is behind her back with his hand either firmly on her lower back or just close enough to be around her waist. Generally speaking it's traditional for a guy to escort a lady with a hand on her back or around her waist to keep her protected and close so she's safe until she gets where she's supposed to be. But it's worth pointing out that Sonic is becoming more comfortable with his physical interactions with those he's close with. He's a very private guy who doesn't do a lot of PDA with friends, especially with Amy when he knows that she's in love with him and he's "runned away" from her advancements in the past. But after everything is over and the battle has been won, he happily holds her close and walks with her back home. And look at her! She's so happy that he's safe and sound she leans her head against his with her eyes closed. Like she's enjoying the fact he's holding her so tenderly and protectively. If this shot was just him and Amy walking together like this, you would say his smile here was a comfortable yet nervous smile like we've seen in the past where she's given him a hug and he looks a little nervous yet happy.
There are many moments in the Sonic Franchise where we get glimpses into the personal relationships Sonic has with his friends and unfortunately there are a lot of people who think that body language doesn't matter when it comes to understanding a relationship. But body language plays such a huge part when it comes to SEEING how close characters are to each other and how they truly feel about each other. With Tails, Sonic's relationship is that of a brotherhood by bond rather than blood. Sonic's always been there for him and yet he respects and encourages his desire to become more independent as he grows up. He will always be there to help him when he needs help and he will always stand up for him but he won't stop him from becoming a hero himself to fight by his side on equal footing in his own way. Sonic calling him "Little Brother" and "Little Bro" openly and more frequently truly shows how he really considers Tails his family.
With Amy, there is a friendship with her but he doesn't view her in the same sibling way he sees Tails. She's straightforward in her love for him and has openly asked him in the past if he would marry her. She's confessed her love for him openly and maturely to him in the IDW series saying she loves him and she doesn't WANT to change him. He's offered her to come with him on his adventure at the time but she had to help out with the struggling resistance. For Sonic, shyly telling her it isn't ALL or NOTHING is HUGE. Because he wasn't against the idea of her being by his side or adventuring with him after she candidly said she loved him for him. After that there's been a lot more flirting from Sonic's end that can be read as just being playful like he is with others. But when you consider in the past he wasn't the type to flirt back or first AT ALL with Amy, there is an inherent romantic undertone to their interactions. But it shows...if ever so slowly (how ironic)...that Sonic is either becoming more comfortable / open to the idea of a public romantic relationship with her or he's becoming more honest with himself since he's always been interested in her but has always been too shy to confess.
If that was too long for you, TL;DR end summary: Sonic's relationship with Tails is a brotherhood, Sonic's relationship with Amy is a slow burn love story.
Hope you enjoyed reading that because I had fun writing it.

I'm not really fond of the idea of Amy "toning down" her affections towards Sonic as a way to show she's "grown and matured," because I ultimately feel it removes a core part of her character (that being she's openly affectionate and touchy-feely with those she's close to and isn't ashamed of it). And it's not even a trait that she only shows or directs towards Sonic; she's done so with other characters as well.
And while I do understand why some would find this specific trait of hers annoying or overwhelming, it's still ultimately an important part of her character and is what makes her stand out against all other Sonic characters. It's both a positive characteristic and a flaw, depending on how you personally look at it.
But the other reason I feel having her hold back her affections in some faux attempt to seem more "grown up," is that Sonic himself wouldn't even want or like her doing that anyways.
Yes, Sonic has shown that he gets flustered and overwhelmed with her actions at times, not really knowing how to respond or react to her sincere proclamations of love. But he's never wanted her to stop doing it or tried to take away her freedom to do so. That's who Sonic is and what he believes in, that people should have the freedom to live their life as they please, so long as it doesn't harm anyone or take away anyone else's right to do the same.
Amy hugging him and singing his praises doesn't harm him or anyone else, nor does it prevent him from doing what he wants to do. She doesn't want to "tie him down" like some falsely claim. She understands that he'll always be running, always be going on adventures, and always be stopping Eggman's plans. And nowhere has Amy ever stated that she wants Sonic to change or slow down for her. Quite the opposite, in fact. If anything, Amy just wants to be alongside Sonic, going on adventures with him.
And the same can be said for Sonic. He doesn't want Amy to stop being who she is or to change just to appease others. That goes directly against his own beliefs and views on life. If Sonic were to learn that Amy toned herself down because she thought it was what he wanted, I'd imagine he'd be horrified and want her to follow her own heart, not his.
I'm all for Amy growing and maturing, but not at the expense of her changing the very core of her character and who she is as a person. She wouldn't want that. Sonic wouldn't want that. The mere concept goes against the very theme of what the games are about.

I really really love Sonamy and you know why? It's because of how their relationship has grown from where they started.
We all know what the beginning was like. Amy’s major crush on Sonic and his general discomfort with romance lead to her chasing him around everywhere. They weren't getting anywhere. They could hardly even be called friends at this point because of Amy’s insistence that they were meant to be together. In this stage of their relationship, Amy wasn't really in love with Sonic. She was infatuated with him. She was so obsessed with the idea of a romantic relationship with him that she forgot to stop and make sure there was actual substance behind their connection.
As we progress through the timeline, things started to shift. Amy began to mature and with that, she began to realize she was coming on too strong for Sonic. At this point, they started building a genuine friendship together. They got to know each other as people. And this is where their relationship started to grow into romance.
Because here's the thing. Love by itself is not a feeling. It's an action. You need to love (verb) someone and love (noun) will blossom as a result. So that's what Sonic and Amy did, without even realizing it. They hung out together, they learned about each other, they saw each other's strengths and weaknesses. They did little things for each other like Sonic helping Amy with her baking and Amy helping Sonic take care of his quills. And they did big things for each other like saving each other in battle or or doing huge favors for the other when they needed it. They loved each other. And then came the feelings of love.
Sonic and Amy’s love story isn't cut and dry. It wasn't a meet-cute love at first sight situation. Their first meeting was messy and Amy got kidnapped and Sonic saved her like he would anyone else. Their relationship stayed messy for a long time. But that's what makes their eventual love for each other so impactful.
They had to work for their relationship. They had to learn and grow together. It wasn't easy and that's beautiful. They've had their rough patches. Who doesn't? But they're at a point now where they won't be torn apart by simple mistakes. All because of the work they both put into this relationship.
Their love is beautiful. 🥰💙💖

I think it's funny that some sonamy shippers who are against sonadow will argue
"Oh I can't support a ship that promotes physical violence and toxicity"
And I just say "Oh yeah I agree. That's why I don't like sonamy"
Because that's literally what sonamy does. Amy has been shown to get physically violent with Sonic and others regarding her crush, as well as threatening others, pressuring Sonic about romance, and being entitled and bratty. And Sonic is clearly shown to be uncomfortable and not like when she does this. That all sounds pretty violent and toxic to me 🤷‍♀️
The difference with sonadow is that it's mutual, Sonic and Shadow fighting each other is part of their rivalry. They're shown to like battling and racing and competing against each other.
It's their love language/jk
You can't say the same when Amy gets physically violent with Sonic, there's usually no pushback and it's just Sonic being scared/uncomfortable and Amy being an entitled brat who usually ends up getting rewarded for her bratty behavior. Sonadow and Sonamy aren't comparable in that regard.

This cover is so important.
This is one of the retail incentive covers of IDW Sonic issue 1, 5th Anniversary Edition, illustrated by Adam Bryce Thomas and coloured by Reggie Graham. When I look at it, something about it tells a story to me, and that story is beautiful.
Sonic and Amy are at the Riverside Romp with Cream and Vanilla, but the rabbits are clearly giving them some space while doing their own thing.
Riverside is the town where Sonic and Amy meet for the first time in the comic series. The archway that holds the sign is also one of the decaying legs from Eggman’s crab mech, the first mech they fight together. Riverside is incredibly symbolic to them both, like how Never Lake would be in the games.
Their journey started rocky at Riverside. They couldn’t see eye-to-eye and had different approaches to how they both could help restore the world after the war. And yet, they still fully respected each other, dishing out compliments and praise and a desire to work together (in different ways). Amy even professes her love for Sonic and vows to him that she never wants to change him, and he bashfully asks her to stay with him in return. They cared for each other, loved each other, immensely then, and now, they’ve chosen to return to Riverside stronger as a pair and as individuals.
Sonic and Amy spend their day together, but they’re both their own people. Amy fawns over the sweets and the loving decorations while Sonic ogles a chilidog. They both indulge in their interests, but close together. One doesn’t need to be exactly like the other, and neither of them want that for the other. As long as they know the other’s there and always will be, that’s all they need. Being their own people despite their connection is what strengthens their bond, because the admiration they have for each other and their differences is so high.
But then, they still want to be together. They dance and cheer with interlocked fingers while sparks fly between their hearts. Cherry blossom petals sway around them, delighting in new beginnings and young love. Sonic and Amy compliment each other, bringing out the brighter sides of theirs souls. Amy’s having the time of her life, living in the moment knowing that Sonic is there with her now and always. But, beautifully, Sonic’s living the moment with with her, taking in her excitement and beauty. He usually doesn’t allow himself the pleasure, but he can’t help it, now.
Sonic and Amy have such a deep understanding of each other that it transcends language. They are in love, and I am in love with them.

I absolutely love that frontiers sonamy interactions is just them bickering about who to worry about first. "Sonic, are you ok?" "Me? I'm worried about you." Essentially is their dynamic the whole game, haha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, it is noticeable how emotional he looks at her, while she or no one else can see. As closed off as Sonic is, I also think he doesn't get too obviously emotional because when you're saving someone, the last thing you want to portray to them is that you're worried. So while she's turned away, not looking, can't hear him? He doesn't have to pretend this isn't serious. His frustration/confusion, he doesn't have to hide it right now.
His hand motions really speak to the guilt and responsibility he's about to put on himself for her, despite having no idea what's going on too. Overall, I just like the idea that Sonic processes alone, as opposed to people thinking he doesn't emote at all. Some people are under the impression (at least from what I've seen) that he can be a jerk for not showing that "he cares," but he does! Just not in the way you want him to, not in the way everyone else does. This works for his character.

Why I Personally Don’t Want SonAmy in Sonic Movie 4 (and it’s not because I hate the ship)
Okay, so before anyone gets heated, I do NOT hate SonAmy. I totally get why people love the ship. They have chemistry in various games and shows, and Amy’s introduction at the end of Sonic Movie 3 basically cracked the fandom wide open. This post isn’t here to bash anyone’s fun. Ship what you want, love what you love. This is just my take, mostly from a storytelling/writing perspective.
So here’s the thing: I’ve always seen Sonic and Amy’s dynamic as more platonic than romantic. They're friends, teammates, and they support each other in high-stakes situations, but I never saw it as “endgame couple” material.
Let’s start with Sonic himself. He’s not a romantic character. He never has been. Sonic’s whole personality revolves around freedom, speed, and moving forward. Romance has always felt kind of out of place for him, not because he’s incapable of love, but because it slows him down in a way that doesn’t fit his core character. He’s not the “hero saves princess, falls in love” trope — and that’s the point. He is the subversion.
So then, what’s up with Amy? Why is she the way she is with Sonic? Why the chasing, the obsession, the love?
Well, let’s rewind to Sonic CD, where Amy was first introduced. She was sweet, optimistic, a little naive, and yeah, she got kidnapped by Metal Sonic. Sonic saved her, and boom — instant admiration. But I don't think her love for Sonic was ever just romance. I think it started as idolization, gratitude, and a genuine desire to be more like him, to be someone who helps others and makes a difference. That’s what Sonic did for her. It inspired her to find her own strength.
And over time, she did. Amy has grown a lot. She’s no longer a helpless character chasing her crush, she’s fierce, independent, and can totally handle herself. Her feelings for Sonic have evolved too. She doesn’t need him, but she respects him.
So here’s where Sonic Movie 4 comes in.
I honestly think they’re setting up a role reversal from Sonic CD. In that story, Sonic saved Amy. But in the movie timeline? I think Amy’s gonna be the one who saves him. We already got a glimpse of this in the Sonic Movie 3 end credits. She looks strong, capable, confident, definitely not someone who needs rescuing. And I think that’s gonna be key.
Sonic’s next arc might center around growth, vulnerability, and maybe even needing help for once. Amy will probably play a huge role in that ,as a catalyst, a friend, maybe even a mentor of sorts. Not as a love interest. Not as “the girl who gets the guy.” But as someone who challenges Sonic to grow.
That’s way more interesting to me than a shoehorned romance. Again, if they do go SonAmy, I hope it’s done well. But I personally think there’s a more powerful, more meaningful story to tell if they don’t.

Hi! What about sonics moral code appeals to you/how would you describe it?
Well I’m currently writing a in depth analysis but to give a brief explanation
Sonic believes that everyone should be free to be whoever they want to be, even bad guys. But also believes that once you interfere with others freedoms or restrict them that you’ve crossed a line and must be stopped. This belief even extends to the earth, thus why he hates people who want to destroy the planet.
That’s why he never kills people or puts them in jail, because he wants to give them a chance to let them choose to be good and killing them would take that choice away.
For me I think it’s a very good ideology to live by and do so myself. It can lead to problems when people make the wrong choices but as long as someone is there to save the day then it’s not a bad way to live and make choices by. Sonic at the end of the day is a preserver, he rights the wrongs of the systems he takes part in and protects the freedoms of the earth and it’s people. He the same as a force of nature, only lead by his strong moral code and not some “destiny” that he must follow.

Crazy Sonamy take, but Reboot Archie Sonamy is Modern Sonamy if they were allowed to get together. It’s such an underrated version of the ship in my opinion. Like READ THIS STUFF.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The balance of Sonic being a bit more of a flirt with Amy’s lovey-dovey side works so well. Their characterizations here are the BEST balance of their game counterparts with a bit more freedom. Like Amy’s excitable and angry side along with Sonic’s more emotional and snarky side. While similar to the games, it’s different enough to be its own thing. Maybe I'm delusional but this is also how I’d love to see them written. Whether officially or in fanfiction. This is some good stuff!

Elise is able to find peace after Solaris gets extinguished, but what about Sonic? How did he find his peace?
Well, I believe that starts in Secret Rings. I mean, they reference Iblis, so why wouldn’t they reference other things from 06? Also the same guy who helped write 06 also helped with this so-
Anyways, throughout SR, Sonic and a genie named Shahra collect seven objects called World Rings. Like the chaos emeralds, they make the wielded of all seven very powerful, but thats where the similarities end. Each ring represents an aspect thats part of the Arabian Nights stories. Hope, Sadness, Rage, Hatred, Joy, Pleasure, and Desire.
Sonic physically collects each one bc Shahra can’t and each time he touches one, it intensifies the corresponding emotion within him. This combined with his life force being slowly consumed by a flame meant Sonic was in for a bad time. And it doesn’t end there.
Shahra sadly betrays Sonic at the last second bc Erazor was an abusive jerk who let her believe that they had a chance to be together again.
But since Shahra made Sonic her master, he wishes for her to do what she thinks is right. So she switched back to Sonic’s side, and just when Erazor is about to kill Sonic, the person who collected the rings, so he could control the rings’ power, Shahra sacrifices herself in Sonic’s stead.
Since the person who died wasn’t the collector of the rings, Erazor’s control was incomplete, leaving the rings susceptible to outside control.
Sonic just saw his friend die, so the rings that he attracts are pretty negative. Specifically, Sadness, Anger, and Hatred. These rings turn him into Darkspine Sonic. But throughout the game he’s gotten a little used to intensified emotions, so he’s able to channel it into defeating Alf-Layla wa-Layla (Erazor’s super form).
In other words, this game gets him up close and personal to his feelings, specifically his negative one. This makes it much harder for him to ignore the impact 06 had on him, so he confronts it via “Worth a Chance”.
Now that he’s more in tune with his emotions, he has to deal with becoming a monster every night, and confront another thing hiding deep inside his heart.
His love for Amy.
You see, another gift 06 has bestowed upon us is the confirmation that not only is Sonic in love with Amy, he has been for a while. Such a while in fact, that she’s referred to as his “long time love”.
Having a crush on another girl ironically brings his other crush into more focus, especially since they are similar to each other (he rescued them when they first met, both love hugs, have short reddish hair, wear pretty dresses, are determined, like thrills, are associated with light things (feathers and rose petals), he prioritized their safety over a chaos emerald (fake or not), etc). In fact, its due to their similarities that Amy and Elise become such good friends.
What makes it harder to ignore these feelings is that while he could run from Amy, he couldn’t run from Elise. She was still in danger, and he wanted to keep her safe until Eggman was stopped.
And it all culminated in the Test of Love, where Sonic had to choose between Elise and Amy. In game, no matter who you choose you get an S rank. I believe this means that the player did a better job than Sonic did, bc he didn’t choose.
Not only does that make sense for his character at the time, it also adds more angst when he sees Elise die. It’s like the narrative is telling him “Oh, you can’t choose? Fine, we’ll choose for you.”
But then the whole thing with Solaris happens, and he’s still left with memories. Or at least deja vu. And being the only one to remember that stuff isn’t good for your psyche, especially if it’s hard for you to open up.
So Sonic Team put him through emotion exposure therapy to make him deal with it. And he did. He got over 06, and now he had the mental space to deal with his feelings for Amy.
Finally we get to talk about Unleashed.
We all know that Sonic becomes a monster thanks to Dr Eggman pulling a dirty trick on him, but how does that affect him?
Well, simply put, he hates it.
Oh he puts on a good face about it, saying that he’s fine, its just that he’d stand out in town (as if he didn’t already).
But when someone doesn’t believe he’s actually Sonic, he does everything under the sun to prove it’s really him. He runs an old man’s errands bc he said he would get rid of his Werehog form. And when he first reverts back, he fixates on the weirdness of werehog form and is very happy to be his real self again. Thats not the behavior of someone who doesn’t care one way or the other.
But his feelings about his werehog form get to truly shine when Amy meets him.
Naturally, she flings herself into his arms and while he’s half-heartedly telling her to let go, he’s clearly happy to see her.
But then she lets go, and gets a good look at him.
Amy pushes him away. Says that she’s sorry and that she’d mistaken him for someone else, and leaves.
It makes sense that she’d do that since she’s mistaken others for Sonic before, bc she sensed him nearby and was just too excited.
But Sonic doesn’t know that. So he’s sad and confused as to why she left him like that. Then Chip points out that he looks different. And he sulkily stomps off, ignoring Chip’s attempts to cheer him up.
The next time we see them is when Amy is in danger. And they do a nod to Sonic CD’s ending cutscene as if we weren’t floored already.
(As nice as it would be to take the credit of this discovery, I found it on the trivia part of the Sonic Unleashed wiki page)
Tumblr media
Sonic still cares about her, but he’s depressed since she didn’t recognize him.
But then, Amy figures it out, and she apologizes, and genuinely says that no matter what he looks like, she’d still love him.
You heard it from the girl herself, she would love Sonic if he was a worm.
Oh, another thing is that one of the side quests you can do has Sonic listening to a love guru who says that he may be “as free as the wind, but (he’s) also kinda awkward”.
It may be funny at first glance but this is huge. Sonic’s seeking advice on how to deal with love. He isn’t avoiding it anymore!
And the game ends with Amy asking Sonic out (as usual), and he says yes.
How do I know that? SATBK’s credits ends with Sonic telling Amy abt the adventure but she’s mad bc he ‘stood her up’, and he flirts with Lady Nimue (Amy’s counterpart). Thats why I consider this game to be the end of Sonic stories. It wraps everything up in a nice little bow (with a few strands that Sega sabotaged).
Oh one more thing I should mention. Of the four games I’ve talked about, only one has original songs by Crush 40
Its a subtle way of indicating that Sonic’s off his game. He’s back on it by SATBK, with his theme song acknowledging his ‘haitus’ (‘Hey all, welcome to the greatest storm! I know you have waited much too long, and I (and I) will be your shining star.’).
Anyways, thats all I’ve got, lmk if I missed anything!!!
