When he was a kid, Eddie had a bit of a subconscious rebellious streak when it came to his mom and the losers, even if he didn’t realize it.
When his mom was being racist, he’d find himself hanging out with Mike. When she was being antisemitic, he’d hang out with Stan. When she’d make comments about the promiscuity of girls these days, he’d hang out with Bev.
When she was being homophobic, he’d seek out Richie.
This tickles Richie when they get older and get together because “Holy shit, Eds, did you know I was gay back then, or something??”
And Eddie would be like “No, dumbass, I had a crush on you” which would fluster Richie and make Eddie’s day.

Okay, can we unironically talk about Eddie’s mommy issues because I feel like some people seem to forget about them. Or maybe they just don’t realize he has them. These people all claim “Myra’s not abusive” or how she’s “not a stand-in for Sonia” and that she just “loves Eddie too much”. Myra doesn’t love him at all. She’s every bit as mentally and emotionally abusive as Sonia. And it’s shown in both the book and the movie
Eddie was ambivalent about proposing to her and only did so because Myra had more or less talked him into it. This shows she doesn’t care about what he wants if it doesn’t align with what she wants. Like Sonia
Myra tries to reason with Eddie to keep him from leaving, going so far as to blackmail him with guilt about leaving her alone. She’s telling him where he can and can’t go, which is controlling behavior. Like Sonia
Myra obsesses over Eddie’s nonexistent health issues and insists that he’s sick in situations that he’s blatantly not. Like Sonia
Sonia and Myra are played by the same actress (Molly Atkinson) to reflect how deep Sonia’s lasting psychological impact on Eddie was
Whenever mentioning IT and marrying a parent-like figure, everyone talks about Bev. And, while she did do that, Eddie did so as well. Some people seem to forget that just because someone isn’t hitting you or trying to rape you doesn’t mean they aren’t abusing you. Being told what you can’t do your whole life can be just as (if not more) damaging to a child and could even last far longer than being beaten. I’m not saying what Bev (and anyone else who’s been physically abused) went through wasn’t anything. I’m just saying that she wasn’t the only Loser who was abused and people seem to forget that

Eddie Kaspbrak
Tumblr media
“I mean it," he said, and she felt that power coming off him, coming out of him, in waves. "Bill and the rest of my friends will be back, Ma. That's something I know. And when they come, you're not going to stop them. You're not going to say a word to them. They're my friends, and you're not going to steal my friends just because you're scared of being alone."
She stared at him, fabbergasted and terrified. Tears filled her eyes and spilled down her cheeks, wetting the powder there.
"This is how you talk to your mother now, I guess," she said through her sobs.
She felt safer in her tears. Usually when she cried Eddie cried, too.
Eddie would not be able to stand against such a flood of tears and sorrow. That cold sharp look would leave his face. Perhaps he would begin to gasp and wheeze a little bit, and that would be a sign, as it was always a sign, that the fight was over and that she had won another victory ... for him, of course. Always for him.
She was so shocked to see that same expression on his face it had, if anything, deepened that her voice caught in mid-sob. There was sorrow under his expression, but even that was frightening: it struck her in some way as an adult sorrow, and thinking of Eddie as adult in any way always caused a panicky little bird to flutter inside her mind.” -It, Stephen King

here are some quotes and song lyrics ( i can’t remember who said some of them) but they remind me of eddie kaspbrak on a deep level!
“suffering did not make me brave”
“jesus can always reject his father, but he cannot escape his mothers blood. he’ll scream and try to wash it off his fingers, but he’ll never escape what he’s made of”
“our mothers are our first homes, and that’s why we’re always trying to return to them” - Michele Filgate (What My Mother and I Don’t Talk About)
“Don’t call me kid, don’t call me baby, look at this godforsaken mess that you made me” - taylor swift
“my mothers love is choking me”
“when you are not fed love on a silver spoon you learn to lick it off knives” - lauren eden
(more of a losers club in general quote) “growing apart doesn’t change the fact that for a long time we grew side by side; our roots will always be tangled. i’m glad for that” - ally condie
(more reddie coded) “the love was there. it didn’t change anything. it didn’t save anyone. there were just too many forces against it. but it still matters that the love was there”

cw for misuse & abuse of drugs (both prescribed and not prescribed)
Tumblr media
page 86 of stephen king's IT
it's really interesting to me that eddie seems to be hiding quaaludes in his house (a drug that hadn't been manufactured for two years at this point due to how easy it was to abuse), because while i do think of eddie as someone who misuses medication, i always thought of the prescribed part as being important to that. that the idea that "if it's prescribed you aren't abusing it" (which is extremely untrue btw, just want to be clear on that. prescription drugs can be just as harmful as non-prescription drugs when misused), would be something that strongly informs how eddie views his medication. so the fact that he's keeping quaaludes and probably using them even though they haven't been manufactured for two years at the time of this scene, is really interesting (directly going against doctors instructions). it makes me wonder if eddie kind of took on a "can't trust doctors" perspective. i think that could make sense, especially since most doctors without sonia interfering probably wouldn't be willing to play into eddie's medical anxiety, which after a lifetime of having his medical anxiety encouraged and indulged by his mother and wife, would probably feel like the doctor is just not paying attention.
i don't really have anything to say about this, and i'm pretty early in the book so it wouldn't surprise me if this gets expanded on later. just found this interesting
