Hesse’s use of crayon drawings, the character’s goofy-ass expressions, Knuckles’ gullible nature played for laughs in an affective way...the Sonic: Mega Drive comic really helped the franchise as a whole grow into something really fun!

If dance battles are still a thing/necessity to the third Sonic movie (like in the second one), I hope it’s a fight between Sonic and Shadow. I think that I’d be awesome—and quite comical—to see these two fight each other with different dance styles in order to get a chaos emerald.

Part 3 - Knuckles

Knuckles wasn't always a big fan of when his friends came to Angel Island. He did enjoy their company-- to some extent-- but there was always that nagging thought in the back of his mind that he could get distracted and lose track of the Master Emerald.

Today, which was a bright and sunny day, Sonic, Tails, and Amy had swung by to visit. From what Sonic had explained, they'd been out flying in the Tornado solely for fun when Tails had seen Angel Island on the radar and had the idea to pop by and say hello. Even though he wasn't the best at interacting with people, Knuckles had to admit that the idea of people wanting to see him made him happy. It helped curb the loneliness that sometimes struck him as he stood alone to guard.

Just to be safe, Knuckles had resorted to reclining atop the Master Emerald itself while Tails caught him up to speed on all they'd experienced since they'd last seen him. Amy talked about some recipes for sweets she'd discovered and promised to make and bring some the next time they popped by.

As they'd talked, Knuckles hadn't been looking at them; just listening. He was lying back on the Emerald, switching back and forth between cloud-gazing and resting his eyes. It was only about a half hour into the whole conversation that he realized he hadn't heard a single bit of input from Sonic. Given how talkative the dude was on his good days, AKA most days, that . . . was weird.

With a slight frown, Knuckles half sat up and glanced over at his companions, but Sonic was nowhere in sight. "Where'd Sonic go?" he demanded.

Tails shrugged. "He got bored and went for a run a few minutes ago."

Knuckles stared around the island for a moment, wondering if he should track the hedgehog down. He wasn't entirely comfortable with the idea of Sonic, who was notoriously reckless, racing around his island with all its delicate ruins and Ancient valuables. Sure, Sonic wasn't a thief as far as he knew, but still . . .

Seeming to read his mind, Tails quickly said, "Relax. He won't break or hurt anything. He doesn't do stuff like that."

At Knuckles' doubtful stare, the fox added, "You can still go check for yourself. Amy and I can watch the Emerald while you're gone."

Knuckles was startled to realize he didn't feel too worried about leaving his charge in the protection of these two younger ones. He knew what they were each capable of, and he was surprised to realize he trusted them.

"Thank you, Tails," he replied, attempting a warm smile, then hopped off the Emerald and hurried down the path in search of the hedgehog.

He knew the island like the back of his hand, so he wasn't expecting the search to take very long, but he still ended up surprised. Instead of tearing around the island like an uncontrolled missile, Sonic was half curled up right in the middle of the pathway through a field, fast asleep and snoring away.

"What are you doing?" Knuckles demanded. Sonic jumped a little and cracked one eye open, which lazily moved up to meet Knuckles' questioning stare.

"What does it look like?" Sonic rolled over slightly and yawned. "The sunshine feels good out here."

Knuckles really wasn't sure what to think of the situation. "You realize there are far better places to nap on this island, right?"

"Uh huh. Sure." The hedgehog's voice was thick with exhaustion as he rested his head back down on the warm stones. "But prob'ly not as good as thi . . ." Before he'd even properly finished his sentence, he was out like a light again.

With a tiny grin of amusement, Knuckles just shook his head and sighed, then turned and started making his way back to the Emerald and his other friends. Even though he didn't claim to know Sonic all that well, the hedgehog sometimes felt like a chaotic little brother to him. A weird chaotic little brother who liked to take naps in weird places.

Friendships could be weird, he decided, as he climbed back onto the Master Emerald and resumed talking with Tails and Amy. But he'd never experienced this feeling of happiness elsewhere. He didn't feel challenged or judged by this little bunch who called him their friend. Sonic was weird, they could all be weird. And that was perfectly fine.

Doesn't it annoy you how childish Sonic is? You're a better warrior than he is.

“It really shows that ya know nothin’ ‘bout Sonic ‘r ‘is character.”

A frown paints the echidna’s muzzle, clearly annoyed by the statement. It showed how little they knew of the blue speedster by seeing him as childish or immature. NOT that Sonic couldn’t be at times.

“Sonic CAN be a lil’ childish at times ‘n a goofball, BUT he is more than that — “

“ — he’s brave ‘n loyal to those he cares ‘bout. Never given up ‘r lettin’ fear hold him back even when everythin’ seems hopeless. Always stayin’ true to ‘imself ‘n helpin’ those in need so that they don’t ‘ave to be afraid.”

“He can be immature at times, childish, ‘n a major goofball BUT he’s a hero for a reason. He’s strong ‘n dependable to a fault, with the will power to never give up ‘r back down. THAT’S Sonic.”

I swear in Project Shadow, Shadow was quite similar to Sonic in a...goofy way :3 Yes, he was more sensible XD But still was allowed to be a goofball in his own right...splashing Maria while brushing his teeth...drawing on his homework...stuffing himself with pizza slices (Me too Shadow, me too) :3 There's something so...similar ;)
