okay so I'm watching this video explaining button layouts on video game controllers. and it's basically going over that once the four button layout was decided on, the most comfortable button was the bottom one, so that was made the "select button"
that's why Xbox has A on the bottom, and it's also why Sony eventually changed X to yes and Circle to no for the Playstation in the US. (no, it's not because Americans are stupid and thought X ment yes. although I wouldn't put it past us to believe that.)
and like, yeah, I agree that it's the most comfortable button to press. I play a lot of platformers where running or attacking is the left button, and I can easily jump with the bottom button by just rolling the lower part of my thumb. it's intuitive and basically second nature to me at this point.
but why does that mean it should be the "select button"?
maybe I'm just Nintendo brained, but to me, the select, confirm, yes, dialog, move-through-menus button will always be on the right. it just makes far more sense to put it there.
like, on a Nintendo controller, whether is snes, ds, classic controller, pro controller, or switch controller, they've all had the same layout of buttons since the 90s. and that's what I've been playing for literally my entire life. every time I try to use an xbox, I just get confused and mess up with the menus.
and like, I'm sure xbox players feel the exact same way with a Nintendo controller.
idk. I don't really have a point with this post.
I think the main thing is that I'm so used to the games I play having Y be a general attack or run or button you're gonna press a lot, B being a jump or some other button you're gonna press just as much, A being a simple interact or dialog or select button, and X being for menus. and even though A isn't the most comfortable button to press constantly, I still think it's fine enough to press often when you need to. it's not like it's actively uncomfortable to press. the most I would have to do is subconsciously shift my hand when I know I'm about to talk to someone.
was there a point to this post? no. I just wanna complain how I'm a Nintendo bitch and xbox and playstation controllers scare me.

i’d seen screenshots of the persona threemake (having only ever played p5) and thought, huh, it’s weird they’ve kept the menu icons and text boxes and everything all blocky and blue and PS2-y, it makes it look dated and behind-the-times even though it’s a 2024 release
how fucking wrong i was
it’s so striking and crisp, and bold, now that i’m playing it and diving through it. it’s so extremely 2006 in a good way, like in the 18 years they’ve managed to figure out the aesthetic and bottle it. it’s like, iPod-punk, sony cd player-core. they’ve managed to nail the look of that clean, hospital-y vibe that came just before frutiger aero. fuck man it’s so beautiful

How many Final Fantasy games are there? I lost track?
It's easy to lose track but don't worry- It's simple once you know the history:
In the beginning, there was Final Fantasy 1. Released in 1987, the first Final Fantasy was then also released in 1989, 1990, 1994, 200, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2021. Final Fantasy 2 was released about as many times, beginning in 1988, but only in Japan. As such, it is known in America as Final Fantasy: The Lost Levequests. The same thing happened to Final Fantasy 3, which was released in America as “2 Final 2 Fantasy: Lindblum Drift.”
The second Final Fantasy released in America was Final Fantasy 2, which was Final Fantasy 4, the Japanese Final Fantasy 4 being a re-skin of an America only game called Chocoboki Panic. Final Fantasy 2, the first SNES game in the franchise, was acclaimed for being incredibly fucking depressing. Like you start the game by killing some kid’s mom and then there’s something about a cursed town maybe? I don’t know, it lost me early on and I never got to see Golbez or Zeromus or whatever. Also, I’m fine with even Dark Souls type menus now but I mean, in 1991 I wasn’t gonna spend 45 minutes trying to figure out how to equip a fucking shoe.
Final Fantasy 3: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate: Alucard’s Revenge 2 came out in both Japan and America in 1994. Introducing cutscenes to the series, Final Fantasy 3 (Abbreviated Final 3 or sometimes Fantasy 5: Hobbs & Sephiroth) was best known for its main villain, Kafka. Kafka was a difficult and frustrating boss who trapped the protagonists in endless bureaucracy and paperwork until they died of old age, never knowing why. It was later released again in Japan as Final Fantasy 6: The Fate of the Fantasy.
After this, the series switched from Nintendo consoles to the Xbox.
The first X-Box, simply called the Xbox, hosted Final Fantasy 7; The next Xbox, the Xbox 360, hosted Final Fantasy 8; The Xbox 1 hosted Final Fantasy 9, and the Xbox 10 hosted Final Fantasy X. Thus if X=7, 360>8, 1=9 and X<10, then Final Fantasy itself equals 11, which is ideal because Final Fantasy 11, the 14th game in the franchise, was indeed a remake of 9, which was the sequel not to 8 but 7, remade later as 13. This can be remembered with the mnemonic “SPUGNUT” but I don’t know how or why.
With fans confused and the Xbox being discontinued by Sega, Final Fantasy sought a new start with Sony and their NeoGeo: Turbografx master system. The first game for that console was Final Fantasy 11 2, not to be confused with 12. 11 2 and 11 3 were released before 12, but well after 14, known first as Final Fantasy Genesis, but re-titled after Final Fantasy 18 into Final Fantasy Genesis 19:18, or in Japan, Shin Megami Tensei.
Final Fantasy remakes continued with Final Fantasy 13, which was Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy 17, which was Final Fantasy 16, and Final Fantasy 21, which was Kingdom Hearts 5, and the upcoming Final Fantasy 22, which will be both Animal Crossing 6 and Land Before Time 15: The Longnecks Take Manhattan, featuring Pinhead from Hellraiser and Beyoncé.
The next Final Fantasy game is planned to be Final Fantasy 28, which will come in two editions, Final Fantasy Dark Cloud and Light Ning. Truly, the greatest franchise ever to spin off from Battletoads.

Here's the Miyuki-chan in Wonderland I promised ya. The format is ISO so that I could copy the DVD directly, including the menu and extra features. This is one of the more 'barebones' releases from ADV, but it does include the PDF of the paper dolls, which wasn't included in Tokyopop translation of the manga. I'd advise playing it in VLC for delicious DVD delights.

I have unlocked the power known as "OBS Stinger Transition Masking" and now I'm passing the savings on to YOU!
What the hell are you talking about?
If you stream using OBS, there's something called a "Stinger Transition" that lets you create custom fades between two different scenes. So if you have a static "be right back" scene separate from a live streaming scene, a transition will fade between the two.
A "Stinger" transition is something OBS added that lets you substitute a video file as the transition fade. Essentially, you'd have a (usually transparent) video file and at a specific point, that stinger video would cover 100% of the stream, at which point you'd tell OBS the time code of 100% coverage so it could secretly swap scenes underneath it.
But then OBS added "Track Matte" which lets you do fancy masking. Now there's a whole complicated process where, if you want full color animated transitions, you have to generate a special split video but that's too fancy for me. What isn't too fancy is just basic mask transitions, like the GIF you see above, and "Track Matte" lets you take the easy way out and do this instead. I promise, it's not hard!
So, I went through and converted my favorite gradient transitions I have for Vegas to work with OBS's Track Matte Stinger Transition Masks (wow, what a mouthful). And! I'm letting you download them and giving you instructions on how to use them. Before we get to how to install and use them, some credits:

How To Install These
Download your chosen flavor:
OBS Stinger Masks [720p].zip
OBS Stinger Masks [1080p].zip
Extract all the MP4 files somewhere. Preferably to their own folder, and possibly somewhere inside your OBS install if you can help it.
Open OBS. You should have a little menu called "Scene Transitions."
Tumblr media
If you don't have this visible, in the drop down menus at the top, click on "Docks" and make sure "Scene Transitions" is checked.
With your Scene Transitions panel available, click the + (plus) icon and select "Stinger."
Tumblr media
This will prompt you to give your new Stinger transition a custom name and take you to the customization menu.
Tumblr media
In the "Video File" field, we just point it towards one of the MP4s you just downloaded and extracted. In this case, I have chosen "Swooce In.mp4"
You can probably ignore everything else, but make sure to check "☑ Use a Track Matte" and under the "Matte Layout" drop down, make sure it's set to "Mask Only." The other two Matte Layout settings are for the fancy full-color alpha transparency video transitions, but we're just doing simple black-to-white masking.
At the very bottom of the menu (I'd have to scroll down on my sample image) there should be a "Preview Transition" button if you'd like to see a sample of what it looks like in motion.
Click okay, and you should be done! As long as the custom stinger you just made is the one selected under "Scene Transitions", every time you change scenes, it will blend between them using the video you selected.
Can I make these any faster? Or slower?
Not within OBS, no. You would have to change the speed of the video file itself. I tried to be mindful of how good these looked at what speeds, but if you think they're the wrong speed, you'll have to crack open a video editor for yourself and figure out how to change the playback speed.
And, obviously, if you have even minor experience with video editing, you can probably grasp the concept of how this works pretty easily, meaning it should be pretty easy to make your own stinger masks with all kinds of fun patterns. As long as it goes from black to white!
You could also be a psychopath with Adobe Premiere and learn how to do the full color animated transitions too, if you want. This seems like a pretty decent tutorial on how to do that, but like I said, that's way too much work for me.

Highway to Pail Day 8
[Day 1] [Prev] [Next] @do-it-with-style-events
February 8: I need a cup of coffee before I can espresso my feelings.
One of the upsides to being a demon was that, sin all you like, you couldn't get addicted. Didn't have the neuro-whatsits and thingies for it. It was kind of unfair to stick the humans with that, in Crowley's opinion, but nobody had ever asked him. Aziraphale would probably say something something overcoming the body through strength of will showed the triumph of the Almighty or whatever, but Crowley knew he didn't really believe that either, not after whatever happened while he was Downstairs in the 1800s. Last it came up, Aziraphale had said something about China, got a haunted look in his eyes, and changed the subject.
Anyway. Addiction. Just because a demon couldn't get physiologically addicted to substances and/or sins, apparently didn't mean he couldn't experience something like it.
When humans don't get their morning coffee, they're irritable and feel like shit and really long for something nice and hot to drink to help them focus. When Crowley skipped a morning coffee, he was irritable and felt like shit and wanted something hot to drink that'd help him focus. It's a good thing Crowley didn't know about the headaches or fatigue, or he'd probably get those too.
He'd been in Las Vegas for four and a half hours, all of them had sucked, and all the coffee shops in a mile radius were either Starbucks brand or used Starbucks products. The infernal inspiration job he'd done on Howard Schultz had gotten him a good thumbs-up from the line supervisor in charge of the Americas, but Crowley seriously regretted it now. Maybe if he'd at least handed it off to Aziraphale, the quality of the mass-produced omnipresent too-burnt coffee would be halfway decent. Then again, probably not; you couldn't teach taste, and Schultz didn't have any.
He was desperate enough to try his luck anyway. Maybe if they dumped enough sugar and milk on it, it'd be almost drinkable.
He stood in the interminable, echoey line at the MGM behind a pair of blonde teenage girls with the words "AMERICAN EAGLE" written across their faux-vintage t-shirts in bold—jingoism extended to even trendy rich kids, apparently, weird fucking country—scrolling through the contacts in his Sony Ericsson (custom matte black with red lettering on the keypad) to decide who it would be most annoying to be on the phone with while ordering.
"—and Sammy was like, what are you gonna get, and I was like, to be honest I don't really know because, like, I never tried it before? And he said the best thing for me would be a frappy-whatever, since they're sweet."
"Sammy's a freak, dude, they've got so many calories, oh my god. I could never."
"No, what? But he said it was like, mostly milk? I thought milk was good for you."
"Maybe like with cereal but my mom said the frappés here have like two thousand calories or whatever."
"No, oh my god!"
"Right? Oh my god. So I'm getting a 'PSL,' that's what Lauren, you know, Jessica's sister that goes to UNR, that's what she gets." Crowley could nearly hear her saying the quotation marks around "PSL." He perked up, just a bit. Almost anything teenagers thought uni students did was either sinful itself or could be twisted that way for work, and he did not have a great feeling about this temptation job.
"What the heck is a PSL? I don't see it on the menu?"
"Pumpkin spice latte, it's on the big sign in the middle."
"Oooohhh, that looks good, maybe I'll get that too."
Well, now Crowley had a new coffee order. Wouldn't freak the barista out as much as "six espressos in a big cup, nothing else" and then filling the rest of the cup with sugar and half-and-half to absolutely drown the shitty coffee, but a little recon was still work. Besides, how bad could it be?
The girls ordered their coffees without incident, he ordered his coffee while obnoxiously on the phone with nobody since Aziraphale was in New Delhi for a book thing and refused to buy a cell phone, and it took a hellishly long time for the shortstaffed baristas to make the coffee, but that was all alright. It would be fine. Crowley would get his caffeine fix and everything would be alright.
The coffee was bad. He'd expected it, but still managed to be disappointed. Burnt Arabica made lukewarm by the addition of cold milk was just a bad job, which meant he had done a good job on the Schultz thing, but was currently bad news for him.
But the coffee wasn't as bad as it could be.
Pumpkin spice, it turned out, was mixed pudding spice, cinnamon and nutmeg and allspice and cloves, no vegetables involved. It made the coffee smell wonderful, and putting it on actually good coffee was something he'd have to suggest to Aziraphale when he got home.
He'd have to put some a little creativity into twisting this into a sin, but his bosses would like it, always liked a bad job paying dividends in the future. Lying to people about vegetables to sell coffee was probably something. Greed, maybe, if you squinted? Could probably twist it into a virtue, too, Heaven liked it when Aziraphale could "thwart" one of his schemes. Maybe humility. Have some burnt coffee with nice spices to remind you that God made spices and humans made bad coffee, or something.
He'd figure it out after he found the guy he needed to convince to card-count and the lady he was supposed to convince to go into politics. He wasn't sure he remembered which was who's job, honestly, but the "PSL" thing was going to be a hit both Up and Down.
Author's note: This is a period piece. It's set in 2005ish.
I don't remember if there actually was a Starbucks inside the MGM in 2005 but there was one by 2007 so I'm going with it.
American Eagle is a clothing brand that was extremely trendy at the time; I desperately wanted to have one of those shirts, but I have never ever fit into skinny-mini model clothes, and so alas, I never did.
The Sony Ericsson was a high-end phone in Europe at the time and boy does this take me back. That's what my knock-off not-Nokia looked like! I used to be able to type so quickly on that thing under my desk, you have no idea.
Tumblr media
UNR stands for University of Nevada, Reno. I don't know why Crowley knows what that is. Maybe one of the targets is a student there.

New Story Unlocked - Archon Quest Chapter IV: Act V
What original sin does the God of Justice, who claims to judge the gods, herself bear... One cannot make an enemy of the divine. If the Heavenly Principles are not to be defied, the answer shouldn't be to bow one's head and wait for death. Instead, let there be a spin, a hop, and a skip. Then, let the "sinner" take a final bow.
