Ok it's time for my insane little brain to go overanalyze the fact Renee called Hangman an ELITE level performer and Hangman made an odd face and then later said Renee said something that reminded him where he would like to go and he needs to mend fences and have tough conversations.

One really subtle, fun thing about the locked tomb is how they talk about “generalist” necromancy.
Judith says in Cohort Intelligence Files that Abigail’s necromancy is “generalist,” though we later find out her real skill lies with spirits. No matter how true it is, this is one of a few things in CIF that paint Abigail as a less-than-stellar necromancer (another one is the idea that her political power is what sets her apart from the others).
So “generalist” necromancy is seen as less advanced than a specialization, like Harrow’s in bone or Ianthe’s in flesh.
You don’t see a ton of that in fantasy media. In A:TLA, normal benders like Katara, Toph and Zuko are far less powerful than Aang, because he can bend all four elements. In Aurora (my favorite ever webcomic that you should all read), Erin has more prestige than any other living mage because he can do every type of magic. The Owl House shows wild witches like Eda, who do multiple kinds of magic, to be outlaws and outcasts. I could go on.
The reason fantasy authors do this is because they want to present magic as a skill/ability, whether it’s inherent or learned. It’s like sports or an instrument: the more you practice, the more things you can do, and the more things you can do, the better you’re considered.
And that’s the big difference between these examples and the Locked Tomb: instead of a skill to learn, TLT presents necromancy as an academic field.
In academia, specialization (like a college major, or being a specific kind of doctor) is common and expected. You’re encouraged to dive deep into one area of expertise, rather than being a jack-of-all-trades. That’s what necromancy is.
“Yes, Pent is a ridiculously powerful political force and talks to ghosts on a regular basis, but she’s a generalist. Not like Ianthe, who’s good at flesh magic!”
It’s really subtle, but it adds to the tonal blend of sci-fi and fantasy that helps make TLT so cool.

that brian/michael scene you just posted from 2.19....i basically word vomited in the tags but i still don't feel like i'm explaining myself well. my brain just went [incoherent beached whale noises] and then i died. brian my baby boy...my baby boy
Hey!
"He doesn't owe me anything."
"He doesn't owe me anything."
"He doesn't owe me anything."
"He doesn't owe me anything."
I am unwell. Baby boy, baby indeed 🫂
Listen, your tags were perfect and far more coherent than I could be.
Tumblr media
And you're right and you should say it... the miscommunication and lack thereof is what killed them.
As Brian tells Mel in 2.16 he thought they were good and that Justin knew he loved and cared about him, yeah he never verbally said it but through all his actions.
Brian didn't want to explicitly tell Justin to stay, he wanted him to do that of his own free will! But Justin wanted him to say something, anything, to give him a crumb so he would know he wanted him there!
As you say they spoke AT each other, with both of them waiting for the other to make a move, instead of laying their cards on the table and having a proper conversation with each other.
Eventually when they reunite in 3.08 we get Justin saying "Now I know what it is you want from me and what I can expect from you"
They finally get on the same page and are unstoppable for the remainder of season three, they are a team.

Cuddles for Breakfast
Happy father’s day, and to all those without fathers I hope you make the best of this day. This is here for a little celebration!
Pairing: Henry Cavill x wife!reader
Summary: You and your daughter surprise Henry for father’s day.
Warnings: None, just fluff.
Word count: 562
Tumblr media
Her name is Sophia, it seemed so obvious when you held her in your hands for the first time. Henry agreed instantly. It was just something in her violently curly black hair and a button nose that just screamed Sophia. And before you knew she’s already three years old.
She’s grown up to be a confident little girl. Like said, she has Henry’s unruly black curls and his intense blue eyes. But your husband swears up and down that she has your attitude. A sharp tongue and even wiser than anyone outside your family would know.
“How do you feel, pretty girl?” You ask, watching as she analysis the hairdo you had done for her. “It’s perfect, Mommy.” Her eyes shine bright and she flashes you a smile directly stolen from your husband. You can’t help yourself and pepper kisses all over her little face. Watching her little button nose scrunch up.
A giggle pours out of the bathroom before you press your finger against your lip. “Shh, my smart girl, you’re gonna’ wake Papa up.” You wink at her as her eyes grow big and she shakes her head. Then you scoop her up and place her on your hip.
“Are you going to carry the presents, while Moma brings the food?” You explain, watching when you put her down and she pets Kal, who absolutely adores her. She mumbles an agreement and grabs the present. She scolds ever so slightly when he almost makes her trip.
You give her the go-ahead when you finally reach the bedroom. Both of you seem to stop and admire him sleeping so peacefully. His broad form takes up most of the bed. His chest rise and fall and his own curls splayed across his cushion and forehead.
That is quickly interrupted by Soph running and jumping on the bed. “Papa, papa! Wake up, wake up!” She screams with glee, seeing out so much to this. Since you told her what you were planning, she’s been ‘planning’ with you.
Now, finally, that the time has come she is just bouncing with excitement. Henry’s blue eyes snap open, thinking the worst before seeing his little girl beam down at him. His hands reach up and grab her, also peppering her with kisses.
“Good morning, my two most special girls.” He beams at you, gently grabbing your arm after you place the breakfast tray in his lap. Placing affable kissing on your wrist. “And why am I being so spoiled this morning?” He asks little Sophia, pulling her close into his side.
“Happy Father’s Day, papa!” she grins handing him her present package. He can already feel the tears forming. He never thought that this would happen. That he would be in such a position to have two of his own beautiful girls pampering him.
“Really?” He canvases your facial expression, still struggling to believe that this is his life. “Yes, papa. Open your present.” His little girl answers for you and he doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to say no. He does as instructed, cooing and praising Sophia for her many Father’s Day paintings and drawings, all covered with glitter of course.
Then he pulls out the new Warhammer painting set, limited edition, you got him and a fancy bottle of decades-old Bourbon. And after that, he shares his breakfast and cuddles his girls close.

Purple Hyacinth analysis: the contrast between episodes 43 and 142
I made a thread on twitter to show how episode 142 was an obvious callback to episode 43 so i decided to post it here as well. Warning: the panels from 43 might be triggering.
First of all we notice Kieran lying a lot in episode 142. The man didn't have a plan at all coming in there and he makes no effort to go around her ability either. It's clear deep down he didn't want to end their partnership, he knows they make a great team but he's doing everything to put distance between them for her sake only. He cares about her so much (read: he's in love with her) and wants to keep her safe.
Tumblr media
This is already a huge difference compared to episode 43. Kieran got his walls up so high when Lauren came to the cave. He is acting cold with a disdainful and arrogant attitude, and uses rhetorical questions to avoid lying to her. There's not a single lie from Kieran in episode 43 except for the one where he slips up when he tells Lauren he has always been a monster.
Tumblr media
Kieran's "i am merely stating facts" from 142 is obviously a lie while in episode 43 he is actually stating facts: he talks about the atrocities he committed as the Purple Hyacinth. He is proving Lauren right: he is a monster.
Tumblr media
Kieran physically hurts Lauren in 43 and it's not a lie when he tells her he wouldn't cry. He is cold and brutal. In episode 142 he could have said something more hurtful in trying to push her away but he can't. He cares about her too much now and would never hurt her again. "I'm not indifferent to what happens to you" = how to tell someone you care about them without actually saying it. Kieran please.
Tumblr media
Another obvious callback to episode 43 is that Lauren now admits she was fully aware of the risks from the beginning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They've come such a long way since then. From Lauren calling him a monster in 43 to her reassuring Kieran in ep 142 about who he is as as a person and that she isn't afraid of him while she takes off his "mask" (the glasses)... i'm not okay.
Tumblr media
Lauki's dynamic is so well written and i'm still in awe of how Eph and Soph handled the development of their relationship after what happened in 43. Lauren telling Kieran she trusts him and won't back down is so important and yet another milestone in their relationship.
Tumblr media
To end this post i want to point out the differences in atmosphere and lighting as well. Episode 43 is cold and dark, and episode 142 has a very warm atmosphere.
bonus:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Conclusion: Lauki's development is wonderfully written. I dare say it's legit one of the best dynamics i've ever come across in a piece of fiction.
Thank you for reading!

hi
What are your thoughts on Cynthia's dress and where she got it from?
SO GLAD YOU ASKED
I'd had some initial thoughts based on my first impression of the dress when I watched the episode, which I expanded on with further research of 1950s fashion plus my own knowledge of storytelling via costumes and color theory. Please note before I get into this theory that it is just that: a theory, based on the analysis of a garment and the knowledge I have acquired via my specific education and discipline.
That said, I do know for a fact that at least some part of my line of thought was correct. A few days ago, I stumbled across an Instagram page, (pinkladiescostumes), which is run by Sam Hawkins, the costumer who designed episodes 4-10. Hawkins has made several posts with clearer images of certain costumes, original concept designs, the inspiration behind the looks, and detailed descriptions of the reasonings/ideas behind them and what they're meant to convey. Highly recommend you give the page a follow if you use insta and are interested in costumes!
Now let's get into it. As before, this is a long post, so analysis is under the cut.
First things first, what are we working with here?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Images from @ pinkladiescostumes on instagram)
It's got a floor-length hem, with a tulle overskirt. It looks to me like the tulle is tiered (I think I'm counting eleven tiers??? God, making a three-tiered skirt in a class last semester nearly gave me a mental breakdown, I think eleven tiers of TULLE would have actually killed me), but the rest of the skirt layers are not. Spaghetti straps, with a detachable tulle shawl. And what looks like a nice lacy, flowery detailing on the bodice. Light, girly, and flowy. (Also fun fact from the costume page: This was an actual vintage dress that was altered to fit Ari! The shawl was added on for Cynthia, though.)
I know I've previously called this look a monstrosity, but that was mainly in jest. This dress is GORGEOUS, it's just not very Cynthia.
Of course, that is, in fact, the point. But I will circle back to that. I want to talk about why I think this is a new dress. Let's talk a bit about school dance history and fashion trends.
It was around the 1930s that school dances as we know them today began to arise. The debutante balls held by colleges began to gain a casual cousin in high schools by the names of soph hops and proms. By the 50's, tea-length dresses came into fashion, similar to what Jane is wearing. Speghetti straps and strapless were making their appearances as well, usually paired with shawls (even useless little ones like what Cynthia is wearing!). The rise of rock and roll and other such music that inspired fast, swinging dances meant that fuller skirts with lots of movement were a go-to. I was doing digging and found a few articles with some interesting pictures.
Tumblr media
(Image from Elle article "Prom Dresses Through the Years: An Evolution" by Mary Grace Garis and Charlotte Chilton)
Tumblr media
(Image from The Vintage Inn article "Prom in the 19040s and 1950s")
Tumblr media
(Image from VintageDancer article, "1950s History of Prom, Party, Evening and Formal Dresses")
Tumblr media
(Image from r/VintageFasion post by u/bonesbugsnferns, "took my great grandmothers 1954 prom dress out to see glenn miller orchestra with my boy:))
Do any of these look familiar?
Each of these dresses are from the very early 1950s; at most from '55. Why is that significant? Well, in 1954, when season one takes place, you probably wouldn't find these dresses second-hand.
Now, admittedly, this is where my theory becomes less physical-evidence based and is pulling more from my own lived experiences, but bear with me and hear me out.
Coming off of The Great Depression and World War II, people were hesitant to get rid of things, especially clothes, and especially women. A dress for a dance might only be worn once, but it would be saved in a chest or an attic for a future generation (see above, the reddit user who wore her grandmother's prom dress from 1954) rather than be taken to a charity shop.
Of course, the Fall Ball wasn't a prom, but I raise you this: my grandmother still has every school dress she ever wore, whether it be prom, homecoming, or a winter formal; as do most of my aunts, cousins, and female friends. I still have my eighth-grade Who's Who semi-formal dress in my closet at my mother's house, and my prom dress is still in its original bag (class of 2020! I did not get my prom).
I grew up very poor, and most of my dance dresses came from thrift stores. Rule of thumb: anything you find that's gonna be in budget is gonna be at least five years out of fashion.
So, this leads me to believe that Cynthia splurged and bought a new dress. It fits in with her story arch as well.
At this point in time, Cynthia's having a rough go of it. They've been pushed out of her comfort zone in the drama club, she bailed on the play quite literally at the last possible second, and they're having feelings for a girl that she's not ready to, and cannot safely, confront. Being queer in high school, especially when you are or believe yourself to be the only one in your friend group who is, is a very isolating experience. And remember your LGBT history kids: being gay was a criminal offense, even in California, for most of the 20th century (in fact, California wouldn't see a significant attempt to lessen the laws until the 1960s).
So keep in mind here: Cynthia's hesitation to act on their feelings (or rather, the total refusal to acknowledge them) isn't (just) coming from something as simple as a fear of rejection or social isolation: if she is found out, she is risking a criminal record, imprisonment, forced conversion, or death.
And how does that fear manifest? By trying to look as much like a girl as possible. And if that means buying a brand-new dress she'd only wear once? Then so be it.
And this dress is the antithesis of anything we see Cynthia wear in the entire series. Their wardrobe is full of dark colors and loose fits, sharp lines and relaxed appearances. Even her more feminine school clothes contain traces of these more masculine elements. So what is this dress trying to say?
Anyone here familiar with color theory?
A brief explanation: our brains associate colors with certain things, and a designer will utilize these associations when trying to elicit a certain thought or feeling about something. (An example of this going badly that I feel most are familiar with, see: A Children's Hospital.)
Tumblr media
(Image from Colors Explained article, "Meaning of the Color Yellow: Symbolism, Common Uses, & More")
This graphic I found explains what yellow is associated with pretty well. Every color has its positive and negative connotations, and what is being done with Cynthia's dress is very clever.
As I stated previously, they are trying very hard to put up a front of being perfectly fine. She is not ready to confront her feelings for Lydia, let alone the fact that she's queer, and both of these things are burdens she has to carry alone. So she throws herself into a date with the one boy she can guarantee is interested in her. She dons a flowery, lacy, yellow dress, looking as much like the "pretty peppies" as she can make herself appear. And she tries so hard to seem happy with him; be the enthusiastic, bubbly, smiley girlfriend.
Lydia, of course, sees right through this. "You can't pull that off."
And we see the mask slip. Yellow means other things as well; caution, sickness, cowardice, betrayal.
Caution: this carefully crafted straight girl persona.
Sickness: anyone can see how uncomfortable, how ill they look in their own skin.
Cowardice: running, running, running; from the play, from Lydia, from the Pink Ladies, from what she's realizing about herself.
Betrayal: Lashing out at Lydia when she tries to make amends. Dragging Shy Guy into the kitchen, just to hurt her. Pushing him to do more, blaming him when he can't make her feel normal, turning her cruelty on him, damaging a life-long friendship in the process.
And in the end, a new dress didn't matter. It doesn't make her 'normal', doesn't make these terrifying notions go away. It was only a warning sign for what was to come.
If you stuck around this long, props to you! This went on longer than I intended, but y'know, I got a lot to say. I've got a few more costume analysis requests burning a hole in my ask box, plus my list of fic plans (which has gotten... longer), but I'm going to have to take a brief hiatus. On top of my summer stock work getting more intense in a few days, I also need to prepare a research proposal in association with my degree track so that I can graduate on time, and I have to start working on the first draft soon, so if I put myself on hiatus from what I want to be writing, I'm hoping I can force myself to get what I have to write done faster. Part of said research is going to involve looking into 1950s fashion, so I'm counting this as a knowledge refresher.
That said, I'm leaving my ask box open to more requests, questions, or anything else, and I'll get to them as I can. Bye for now!

ow introduction post jeeez
hi! i’m Sophi/Soph and it is always going to be a little weird.
this blog is mainly for Sleep Token stuff. i reblog a lot of art, [some of it may be nsfw/suggestive ALTHOUGH VERY RARE but alas you’ve been warned], recordings and pics from concerts, shitposts, memes, the ususal. but i’ll reblog and post about non ST related stuff also.
i don’t know their names, identities and haven’t seen their faces and i’m not interested in knowing. conjoining, i don’t post about that either. i enjoy the music for what it is, just how the band members intended for their followers to do. i love that i can project in peace. so this is a safe space for individuals who subscribe to that <3
i also post my thoughts on Sleep Token. it’s not analysis per se, rather a string of thoughts and feelings i experienced, combined and made a playlist of to make sense. it’s mostly sappy shit about how i love this band’s lyricism and tunes lmao. you can find it on my #sleep token thots tag
other tags i use:
#yummy art: for fanart and especially suggestive and nsfw pieces #open mic moment: my ramble tag #my video:) #my gif :) #my photo :): all for things i filmed at concerts myself #it's ii'sday innit: special chewsday post #motorbickle shenanigans: i am a bikette and am enjoying the bike life so i will post abt it occasionally c: #kiki<3: for my sweet sweet baby (my cat)
disclaimer: this blog is a mess and i'm bad at tagging properly. it's a work in progress yall. i'll obviously post some more of my stuff and will update as i go!
i don’t reblog or post negativity. it has its place, those are valid feelings of human beings but i don’t like spreading that. i might engage with/adress something once in a blue moon, cause i am human after all but my intention is to giggle, twirl my hair and kick my feet in the air
these are some of my most cherished tokens:
this is my full recording of Atlantic live performed at Leipzig on 10.12.2023. and this is Atlantic filmed in Berlin on 8.12.2023. this is a very nice part of TLYW also from the Leipzig ritual on 10.12.2023. ii’s The Summoning solo performed in Berlin on 8.12.2023. some nice Nazareth gifs i made :) a smol part of Rain live in Berlin on 8.12.2023 and some seriously yummy moves by Espera/vessellettes

Me trying to explain that Blackpool Combat Club surrounding Hangman and Dark Order getting involved after Hangman made it clear he didn't want them involved, means Hangman is going to separate himself from the Dark Order and be broken down and beaten by Mox, the House of Black glitch during the Elite promo means the Elite are going to be broken down and mind fucked by Malakai until no return and lose the trios titles, and that's gonna lead us back on track to finally getting a reunion between the boys!!

[ID: A reply on a post from the original poster, @/katakaluptastrophy, reading “@/sunshine-fruit-of-the-vine Ooh, your point in the tags about Corona’s comment to Judith is really interesting! Though I suppose it could also be interpreted as the Second being the ones doing the business contracts? Also please tell me more about your political headcanons…” /End ID.]
@katakaluptastrophy this is old but you absolutely do not have to ask me twice oh my god. This is where I reveal exactly how much of a history dork I am so be warned. I have also indicated Vibes in case that is helpful to anybody
So the common denominator among the Houses (as well as among societies as a whole, I spent like half a unit in my sociology class on this last year) is that there’s always a small upper class/nobility/etc and the population gets larger as you go down the ladder. That manifests in different ways within the different Houses, but it’s the same principle: The rich are few, and the poor are many.
That being said…
SECOND: The military leaders of the Nine, the Second are the ones who do the actual conquering of planets. However, Corona’s comment about how “as a Second, [Judith] should be willing to sell her birthright for economics” suggests they might not be getting their share of the profits. A huge portion of the Second lives in poverty, especially the capital city of Trentham, and pretty much the only way to escape it is to join the Cohort. The wealthy and powerful (generals, admirals and war heroes) vehemently deny there ever being a problem. For vibes, think New York City or Chicago but A Little Worse.
THIRD: The economic center of the Nine, the Third is a trade powerhouse and a hub for merchants and artisans. But they also export something a little less palatable: Propaganda for the Empire. The capital, Ida, is an enormous massive palace very similar to Versailles, where the best of the best workers (and the friends of the royal family) are privileged to live. Unlike the Second, where hard work actually can bring you up in the world, success in Ida comes out of bribes, flattery and sex. For vibes, think Paris but even less subtle, and crazy on the amethysts.
FOURTH: Supposedly a backup to the Second. In actuality, the lack of any real leadership has left the small and vulnerable population (veterans, the sick and disabled) to the mercy of the Fourth’s criminal underbelly. The capital city of Tisis is functionally a ghost town, mostly full of impotent, sheltered nobles and extensions of the mafia collecting bribes, and the other cities aren’t much better. For vibes, think Piltover (I don’t play league of legends but I LOVE Arcane), but the upper city is way more depressing and abandoned and the whole thing has kind of an ancient Roman feel as well.
FIFTH: The administration of the Nine, the Fifth works closely with the Emperor himself to keep the internal workings of His Empire running smoothly. Koniortos Court is a complex and many-armed bureaucracy, managed by its Lords or Ladies (and Seneschals, who do most of the actual diplomacy) like clockwork. It lies nestled in the capital of Rhax, where the majority of the Fifth’s population lives and works. There are frequent rebellions, but they’re snuffed out with alarming ease. For vibes, think combination of Victorian London and the city from Ulysses Dies At Dawn.
SIXTH: Less of its own independent state and more of the Emperor’s House of Wisdom, the Sixth House is the center of learning in the Nine Houses. Almost all the Houses send the best of their best to study there, so there’s a lot of people, but its native population is incredibly small- the size of a single city on the Third. Most of the Sixth is a single huge, labyrinthine library, surrounded by dormitories and a few spaceship ports for trade with the Seventh. Rank is decided not by birth, but by ability and age (in theory, anyway; in practice, they’ve strayed a bit from Cassiopeia’s vision). It’s still very communal, and everyone considers each other family on some level. For vibes, think a walled city combined with a super old university.
SEVENTH: The Seventh is responsible for most of the beautiful things made in the Empire. They export and import a lot of art, from pottery to poetry, and are considered superior craftsmen to the Third (which is why Ianthe thinks so poorly of their cloud formation poems). Outside this, they’re largely self-sufficient and very insular, doing their own farming making regular contact with only the Sixth. The lower classes are mostly farmers, while the aristocracy is just a few families, which is how Heptanary cancer happened. For vibes, think the romanticized version of the antebellum South from old books that like to gloss over the slavery thing, but a little bit sickly and weird-looking.
EIGHTH: The religious center of the Nine, the Eighth is in control of the worship of the Emperor and his Saints, as well as the Nine’s religious traditions. They’re also responsible for a chunk of Imperial propaganda- less than the Third, though, and directed less to the shepherd worlds and more within the Nine Houses. They live similarly to the Ninth House, with religious decadence, everyday asceticism and very little social mobility. The population of the Eighth House is actually very diverse, full of pilgrims from all over the Empire. For vibes, think medieval Italy but it’s all minimalist white and it ruins the whole thing.
NINTH: We know about the Ninth. We got like ten chapters about the Ninth. For vibes, think the Ninth.

Started studying ceremonial magic rituals from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley’s Astrum Argentum and Ordo Templi Orientis . Although I have my feelings about Crowley as a person, He no doubt created brilliant and illuminating occult literature that teaches the Qabalah so well that I must separate the Art from the Artist. Began to record my Gnosis for thy own Order called “ The Qabalistic Templum Atra Flamma “ = The Qabalistic Temple ov the Black Flame. The Black Flame refers to the Qabalah and the Ain Soph Aur : The Limitless Light ov God, Infinite Creative Potential that Exists above Kether And is the internal invisible Etheric flame of light/energy that exists within us all. Also the Torah was allegedly written with black fire. The limitless Light ov God brought into manifestation through Kether That gives Chokmah The Wisdom of Everything and Holds the Science of the Holy Tarot and the Zodiac with all Stars and All Divine Light, blasting into Binah, which gives Form, Time, and Space for the lower 7 Sephiroth to form emanations and Our Multiverse and reality is created. I am becoming a Wizard. 🤣
Tumblr media
The Black Flame corresponds the Supernal Triad of Kether-Chokmah-Binah also, with emphasis on Chokmah: Infinite Potential and Super-Consciousness This is my book of shadows that I have titled “ Libre Umbrarum “ In the photographs, I have presented the formulae for the Qabalistic Cross, The Lesser Banishing Ov The Pentagram Ritual, The Lesser Invocation Ov The Hexagram and The Lesser Banishing Ov The Hexagram along with detailed explanation of the Rite Ov The Analysis Ov The Keyword:
Part i: The rest will be in next post🌓⚡️🪐🕍

Incoming frosh here. Not sure what I want to major in, but math, econ, and possibly ORFE. I liked HS math a lot, but don't even want to try placing out of MAT 103-104 because it was virtual and I wouldn't be confident going into higher level math courses with what I feel is a weak foundation. What would my schedule look like after that if I wanted to pursue math? I think (??) I'd have to do 215-217 as a soph, and then all eight department reqs in 2 years, which seems kind of terrible??
Latios:
yeah… the ”215-17 soph year, then 8 departmentals in 2 years + junior IW + thesis” would be pretty terrible. (almost as if the course progression in the math department is very unwelcoming towards those without a lot of prior background.) if you want to major in math, one option to avoid this is to take whichever 10X/20X math class would be most comfortable for you freshman fall, while aiming to take 217 freshman spring. this might sound kind of scary, and it would definitely be A LOT of work and time. however, 217 does not actually require 215 as a prerequisite (linear algebra and intro real analysis are independent). i believe 217 follows Axler’s book (which is very readable with minimal background) pretty closely, so maybe you could read the first bit of that beforehand (or even now!) you could also go for 204 (which isn’t full on proof-based like 217 but covers more of the theory than 202, i think) freshman spring. one relevant fact is that not all the departmentals strictly need you to have taken 215-17 (even if it might say that on the course catalog, you could probably just take the class): combinatorics, intro graph theory, topology come to mind. if you don’t feel comfortable taking 217 as a freshman, you could go for 215-17 + two departmentals (one each semester) soph year. and taking 215 soph fall would open up lots of analysis options for a soph spring departmental in addition to 217. but if this sounds worse than 217 as a freshman, i’d point you to doing 217 freshman spring. like you said, you *really* don’t want to be doing 2 departmentals every semester on top of independent work in junior and senior years.
also: how familiar are you with what a proof is/how to prove something? because it is a TERRIBLE idea to take 215 or 217 without knowing what it means to write a mathematical proof. if you aren’t familiar with proofs, any math you’d learn in any math class here with number at least 214 will feel very different than the math you’ve learned, which can be a difficult/confusing change in mindset. as for what you should do now: maybe look at an intro analysis/linear algebra book, some ones people like are Axler, Treil (linear algebra), Rudin, Spivak, Pugh (analysis)? a book like the ones mentioned would prepare you well for the content covered in 215/17, along with introducing you to theoretical math in general if you aren’t yet comfortable with proofs. (BUT! imo the best way to start learning theoretical math is through ”problem solving” like material; see stuff like AoPS resources, Zeitz’s Art and Craft, The Book (more difficult). these things are also a lot of fun!)
good luck OP, hope this is helpful! feel free to ask any questions about math here anytime if you have any.

How to Read Social Science
The concepts and terminology of the social sciences pervade almost everything we read today.
Modern journalism, for example, does not limit itself to reporting facts, except in the kind of shorthand, “who-what-why-when-where” news story that one finds on the front page of a newspaper.
Journalists, much more commonly, enmesh the facts in interpretation, commentary analysis of the news. These interpretations and comments draw on the concepts and terminology of the social sciences.
These concepts and this terminology are also reflected in the vast number of current books and articles that may be grouped together under the heading of social criticism. We are confronted with a continuous flow of literature on such subjects as race problems, crime, law enforcement, poverty, education, welfare, war and peace, good and bad government. Much of this literature borrows its ideology and language from the social sciences.
The literature of social science is to confined to nonfiction. There is also a large and important category of contemporary writing that might be termed social science fiction. Here the aim is to create artificial models of society that allow us, for example, to explore the social consequences of technological innovation. The organization of social power, the kinds of property and ownership and the distribution of wealth are variously described, deplored or lauded novels, plays, stories, moving pictures, television shows. Insofar as they do this they may be said to have social significance or to contain “relevant messages.” At the same time they drawn on and disseminate elements of social sciences.
Furthermore, there is hardly any social, economic, or political problem that has not been tackled by specialists in these fields, either on their own or by invitation from officials who are actively coping with these problems. Specialists in the social sciences help to formulate the problems and are called upon to help in dealing with them.
Far from the least important factor in the growing pervasiveness of the social sciences is their introduction at the high school level and in the junior community colleges. In fact, student enrolments in social sciences courses are running far ahead of enrolments in the more traditional literature and language courses. And enrolments in social sciences courses greatly exceed those in courses dealing with “pure” sciences.
What is Social Science?
We have been talking of social science as if it were a single entity.
That is hardly the case.
Which, in fact, are the social sciences? One way to answer the question is to see what departments and disciplines universities group under this name. Social science divisions usually include departments of anthropology, economics, politics, and sociology. Why do they not ordinarily include as well schools of law, education, business, social service, and public administration, all of which draw on the methods and concepts of social sciences for their development? The reason commonly given for the separation of these schools from the social science divisions is that the main purpose of such schools is to train for professional work outside of the university, while the previously mentioned departments are more exclusively dedicated to the pursuit of systematic knowledge of human society, an activity that usually goes on within the university.
There is presently a trend in universities toward the establishment of centres and institutes for interdisciplinary studies. These centres cut across the conventional social science departments and professional schools, and include studies in the theories and methods of statistics, demography, psephology (the science of elections and polling), policy- and decision-making, recruitment and treatment of personnel, public administration, human ecology, and many more.
Such centres are producing studies and reports that incorporate findings of a dozen or more of these specialties. Considerable sophistication if required even to discern the various strands of these efforts, let alone judge the validity of the findings and conclusions.
What about psychology? Those social scientists who interpret their field strictly tend to exclude psychology on the grounds that it concerns itself with individual and personal characteristics, while the social sciences proper focus on cultural, institutional, and environmental factors. Those who are less strict, while conceding that physiological psychology should be subsumed under the biological sciences, hold that psychology, both normal and abnormal, should be regarded as a social science on the grounds of the inseparability of the individual from his social environment.
Psychology, incidentally, is a prime example of a social science area that is currently enjoying great popularity among students. It is possible that enrollments in psychology across the country are larger than in any other subject. And the literature of psychology, at every level from the most technical, to the most popular, is enormous.
What of the behavioural sciences? Where do they fit into the social science picture? As originally used, the term behavioural science included sociology and anthropology and the behavioural aspects of biology, economics, geography, law, psychology and psychiatry, and political science. The accent on behaviour served to emphasize observable, measurable behavior capable of being systematically investigated and of producing verifiable findings. Recently, the term behavioural sciences has come to be used almost as a synonym of the term social sciences, but many purists object to this usage.
Finally, what about history? It is acknowledged that the social sciences draw on the study of history for data and for exemplifications of their generalizations. However, although history, viewed as accounts of particular events and persons, may be scientific in the minimal sense of constituting systematic knowledge ,it is not a science in the sense that of itself it yields systematic knowledge of patterns or laws of behavior and development.
Is it possible, then, to define what we mean by social science?
We think so, at least for the purpose of this chapter. Such fields as anthropology, economics, politics and sociology constitute a kind of central core of social science, which almost all social scientists would include in any definition. In addition, we think it would be conceded by most social scientists that much, though not all, of the literature of such fields as law, education, and public administration, and some of the literature of such fields as business and social service, together with a considerable portion of psychological literature, falls within the confines of a reasonable definition. We will assume that such a definition, although admittedly imprecise, is clear to you in what follows.
The Apparent Ease of Reading Social Science
A great deal of social science writing seems like the easiest possible material to read. The data are often drawn from experiences familiar to the reader––in this respect, social science is like poetry or philosophy––and the style of exposition is usually narrative, already familiar to the reader through his reading of fiction and history.
In addition, we have all become familiar with the jargon of social science and use it often. Such terms as culture (cross, counter, and sub), in-group, alienation, status, input/output, infra-structure, ethnic, behavioral, consensus, and scores like them, tend to appear in almost every conversation and almost everything we read.
Consider the word “society” itself. What a chameleon-like word, what a host of adjectives can be placed in front of it, while throughout it continues to convey the broad notion of people living together rather than in isolation. We hear of the aberrant society, the abortive society, the acquiescent society, the acquisitive society, the affluent society, and we call continue on through the alphabet until we arrive at the zygotic society, which is one that is in a continuous state of ferment, not unlike our own.
“Social,” as an adjective, is also a word of many familiar meanings. There is social power, social pressure, and social promise––and then, of course, there are the ubiquitous social problems.
The last phrase, indeed, is a fine example of the specious ease that is involved in both the reading and the writing of the social science literature. We would be willing to wager that in the last few months, if to the last few weeks, you have read and even possibly written the phrase “political, economic, and social problems.” When you read or wrote it, you were probably clear as to what was meant by political and economic problems. But what did you, or the author, mean by social problems?
The jargon and metaphors of much social writing, together with the deep feeling that often imbues it, make for deceptively easy reading. The references are to matters that are readily familiar to the reader; indeed, he reads or hears about them almost daily. Furthermore, his attitudes and feelings regarding them are usually firmly developed. Philosophy, too, deals with the world as we commonly know it, but we are not ordinarily “committed” on philosophical questions. But on matters with which social science deals, we are likely to have strong opinions.
Difficulties of Reading Social Science
Paradoxically, the very factors we have discussed, the factors which make social science seem easy to read, also make it difficult to read. Consider the last factor mentioned, for instance––the commitment that you as a reader are likely to have some view of the matter your author is considering. Many readers fear that it would be disloyal to their commitment to stand apart and impersonally question what they are reading. Yet this is necessary whenever you read analytically.
Such a stance is implied by the rules of reading, at least by the rules of structural outlining and interpretation. If you are going to answer the first two questions that should be asked of anything you read, you must, as it were, check your opinions at the door. You cannot understand a book if you refuse to hear what it is saying.
The familiarity of the terms and propositions in the social science writing is also an obstacle to understanding. Many social scientists recognize themselves. They object vigorously to the use of more or less technical terms and concepts in popular journalism and other writings. An example of such a concept is that of the Gross National Product (GNP). In serious economic writing, the concept is employed in a relatively limited sense. But many reporters and columnists, some social scientists say, make the concept do too much work.
They use it too widely, without really understanding what it means. Obviously, if the writer of something you are reading is confused about his use of a key term, you, as a reader, must be so, too.
Let us try to make this clear by drawing a distinction between the social sciences, on the one hand, and the so-called hard sciences–––physic, chemistry, and the like––on the other hand. We have observed that the author of a scientific book (taking “scientific” in the latter sense) makes clear what he assumes and what he desires to prove, and also makes sure that his terms and propositions are easy to spot. Since coming to terms and finding the propositions is a main part of reading any expository work, this means that much of the work is done for you in the case of such books. You may still have difficulty with the mathematical form of presentation; and if you do not have a firm grasp of the arguments and of the experimental or observational basis of the conclusions, you will find it hard to criticize the book––that is, to answer the questions, Is it true? and What of it? Nevertheless, there is an important sense in which the reading of this kind of scientific books is easier than the reading of most other kinds of expository works.
Another way to say what it is that the hard scientist does is to say that he “stipulates his usage”––that is, he informs you what terms are essential to his argument and how he is going to use them. Such stipulations usually occur at the beginning of the book, in the form of definitions, postulates, axioms, and so forth. Since stipulation of usage is the characteristic of these fields, it has been said that they are like games or have a “game structure.” Stipulation of usage is like establishing the rules of a game. If you want to play poker, you do not dispute the rule that three of a kind is a better hand than two pairs; if you want to play bridge, you do not argue with the convention that a queen takes a jack (in the same suit), or that the highest trump takes any other card (in a suit contract). Similarly, you do not dispute a hard scientist’s stipulations in reading his book. You accept them, and go on from there.
Until quite recently, at least, stipulation of usage was not as common in the social sciences as it is in the hard sciences. One reason for this is that the social sciences were typically not mathematicized. Another is that the stipulation of usage in the social or behavioral sciences is harder to do. It is one thing to define a circle or an isosceles triangle; it is quite another to define an economic depression or mental health.
Even if a social scientist attempts to define such terms, his readers are inclined to question his usage. As a result, the social scientist must continue to struggle with his own terms throughout his work––and his struggle creates problems for his reader.
The most important source of difficulty in reading social science derives from the fact that this field of literature is a mixed, rather than a pure, kind of expository writing. We have seen how history is a mixture of fiction and science, and how we must read it with that in mind. We are familiar with this kind of mixture; we have had a great deal of experience with it. The situation in social science is quite different. Much social science is a mixture of science, philosophy, and history, often with some fiction thrown in for good measure.
If social science were always the same kind of mixture, we could become familiar with it as we have with history. But this is far from the case. The mixture itself shifts from book to book, and the reader is confronted with the task of identifying the various strands that go to make up what he is reading. These strands may change in the course of a single book as well as in different books. It is no easy job to separate them out.
You will recall that the first step of an analytical reader has to take is to answer the question, What kind of book is this? In the case of fiction, that question is relatively easy to answer. In the case of science and philosophy, it is also relatively easy; and even if history is a mixed form, at least the reader ordinarily knows that he is reading history. But the various strands that go up to make the social science––sometimes interwoven in this pattern, sometimes in that, sometimes in still another––make the question very hard to answer when we are reading a work in any of the fields involved. The problem, in fact, is precisely as difficult as the problem of defining social science.
Nevertheless, the analytical reader must somehow manage to answer the question. It is not only his first task, but also his most important. If he is able to say what strands go to make up the book he is reading, he will have moved a good way towards understanding it.
Outlining a work in social science poses no special problems, but coming to terms with the author, as we have already suggested, may be extremely difficult, owing to the relative inability of the author to stipulate his usage. Nevertheless, some common understanding of the key terms is usually possible. From terms we move to propositions and arguments, and here again there is no special problem if the book is a good one. But the last question, What of it?, requires considerable restraint on the part of the reader. It is here that the situation we described earlier may occur––namely, the situation in which the reader says, “I cannot fault the author’s conclusions, but I nevertheless disagree with them.” This comes about, of course, because of the prejudgements that the reader is likely to have concerning the author’s approach and his conclusions.
Reading Social Science Literature
More than once in the course of this chapter we have employed the phrase “social science literature” instead of “social science book.”
The reason is that it is customary in social science to read several books about a subject rather than one book for its own sake. This is not only because social science is a relatively new field with as yet but few classic texts. It is also because when reading social science, we often have our eye primarily on a particular matter or problem, rather than on a particular author or book. We are interested in law enforcement, for example, and we read half a dozen works on the subject. Or our interest may concern race relations, or education, or taxation, or the problems of local government. Typically, there is no single, authoritative work on any of these subjects, and we must therefore read several. One sign of this is that social science authors themselves, in order to keep up with the times, must constantly bring out new, revised editions of their works; ad new works supersede older ones and rapidly render them obsolete.
To some extent, a similar situation obtains in philosophy, as we have already observed. Fully to understand a philosopher, you should read, the philosophers your author himself has read, the philosophers who have influenced him. To some extent it is also true in history, where we suggested that, if you want to discover the truth of the past, you had better read several books about it rather than one. But in those cases the likelihood that you would find one major, authoritative work was much greater. In social science that is not so common, and so the necessity of reading several works rather than one is much more urgent.
The rules of analytical reading are not in themselves applicable to the reading of several works on the same subject. They apply to each of the works that is read, of course, and if you want to read any of them well you have to observe them. But new rules of reading are required as we pass from the third level of reading (analytical reading), to the fourth (synoptical reading). We are now prepared to tackle the fourth level, having come to see, because of this characteristic of social science, the need for it.
Pointing this out makes it clear why we relegated the discussion of the social sciences to the last chapter in in Part Three. It should now be clear why we organized the discussion in the way we did. We began with the reading of practical books, which are different from all others because of the special obligation to act that the reader is under if he agrees with and accepts what he is reading. We then treated fiction and poetry, which pose special problems that are unlike those of expository books. Finally, we dealt with three types of theoretical, expository writing––– science and mathematics, philosophy, and social science. Social science came last because of the need to read it synoptically. Thus the present chapter serves as both the end of Part Three and an introduction to Part Four.

Okay I know I JUST said I really like this episode BUT LEMME CRITIQUE ONE THING
The whole opener of every one getting mad at Mikey is flawed as hell. Mostly because all of the things they accuse him of have either A) were not seen on screen or B) didn’t happen as often as the writers think it did.
For starters the whole he’s been skipping training a lot is literally impossible given what the team has been through since the Battle Nexus, y’know the whole Triceratone invasion, all of them being captured by Bishop, Splinter taking Mikey on his own solo assignment to practice learning to use his brain as much as he uses his body in battle, went on patrol with Leo for an entire night, helped Angel find her brother, teaming up with Karai, the time traveling, Ultimate Drako attacking which separated all five of them into different dimensiona, the whole family almost dying to stop Shredder, literally the episode before this was all of them plus Casey training in an abandoned area, all of these are situations where Mikey has been fully active in and did his part.
Everything the show has done since the Battle Nexus completely contradicts this narrative they’re trying to push about Mikey being lazy. Sure he can be unfocused but the last thing Mikey has been is lazy.
And then there’s the whole he rubs his Battle Nexus win in everyone’s faces every chance he gets. Another thing that false flat on its face. I remembered this as I began to watch season 3 and I counted how often Mikey brought up winning the Championship and it was only about four times, maybe five, not that often, which is surprisingly low considering how cocky this version of Mikey can be when he does succeed.
But honestly? Mikey being cocky about winning an inter-dimensional battle seems pretty justifiable to me, even if it was on a technicality before this episode ended. The battle nexus is one of the biggest battles in any dimension, who wouldn’t brag about winning something so grand? Sure it can get annoying but at the same time, it’s a pretty rare win.
And you also gotta consider how underestimated Mikey is throughout the series, because Mikey doesn’t have Leo’s laser focus, or Raph’s strength or Donnie’s intelligence, it’s often mistaken that Mikey isn’t as skilled in ninjitsu but that couldn’t be more false as its well known to fans that regardless of the incarnation, Mikey is actually the most capable and gifted of his brothers. He’s had moments since the very first episode that he knows how to handle himself perfectly fine in battles, can beat his brothers one-on-one, whenever the team doubts his ability for a plan he has one and its works out incredibly well.
Ninjitsu is something that comes rather easy to him as his body and spirit already move in a flexible way. Mikey’s very good at adapting to a situation and that’s shown with how he fights, even down to his weapon choice. Mikey’s well aware that he does slack off and that he struggles with focusing on something that doesn’t interest him, but he’s never been blind to the dangers of the battles he’s in.
It all comes down to Mikey applying himself. When Mikey applies himself, he’s one of the best fighters his family has, and this episode, despite this whole critique I’m giving right now, proves that.
When Mikey needs to fight, he fights.
