Vocal Mimicry and Ear Worms

Every time the drink machine finished, it played a little song.

It was pretty simple, less than 10 notes, but it was the same song, every time.

It wasn't even that it played the same song every time. It wasn't even that everyone on the ship - except the humans - got a drink from the machine.

The song was catchy.

Peg started it. She just found her self whistling the "drink finished" song one day. "beep beepita beep beep beep beepita beeeeeeep." She couldn't help it.

Then, Kelly picked it up. The song worked its way into her head too. She'd be working at her station and suddenly she'd be struck by an intense need to sing the song.

After about three cycles, every single human on the ship was singing it. Normally, this would be chalked up by the rest of the crew as "just another strange Human thing" but the problem was that it was the 'drink finished' song. Everyone onboard was conditioned to want to go get their drink when the song was done.

The humans could mimic is perfectly.

"beep beepita beep beep beep beepita beeeeeeep."

Captain Flowing River Rapid's feathers fluffed in irritation. Two people on the Command Deck got three quarters of the way out of their seats before they realized what they were doing and sat back down, sheepish. "Desmond! What have I said about mimicing the drink finished melody?"

Desmond ducked his head at the reproach. "Sorry Captain River, I couldn't help it. It's just so catchy."

Captain River clacked his beak. "It wouldn't be so bad if not for the fact that you can all mimic the sound so well."

Desmond turned and looked at the Captain. "What? We are? We're singing it, but it doesn't sound exactly like the drink machine."

The Captain pointed at Desmond accusingly. "Don't deny it! You're all singing the song at all times of the cycle! You know that everyone thinks a drink is ready when you do it. You sound exactly like the machine!"

One of the Sefigans who got partially up from their station nods quickly, their antenna bobbing. "Captain River is correct, Des. You all really sound a lot like the drink machine. How are you doing it?"

Desmond shrugged. "I mean, we heard the song, and it gets like, stuck in our heads. Singing it feels like one way to get it out. Plus, it's fun to sing Kel. Fun to make sounds."

Kel's wing covers clack. "Can you mimic other things?"

"I don't know Kel, I don't really think of myself as a mimic. There are others who can do it much better than me. Some humans made a whole career out of it."

"That sounds like a thing I human would do, yes. But what about your Des? Let's see...." Kel looks down at their station. "What about this?"

Kes runs a test for the collision alarm. It's a warbling rising and falling tone."

Des thinks for a second and sings - for him - a pretty close approximation.

Captain River gasps and leans back in his chair. "How do you do that?"

Desmond wails. "It wasn't even that good! I just heard the tones and repeated them."

Kelly entered the Command Deck just then. She was carrying a pad and her overalls looked stained. "Captain River, I've just come to report tha-"

"Kelly! Mimic the collision alarm"

"What? Um.." Kelly makes the same noise."

Now, everyone on the Command Desk gasps. Kelly is taken aback and looks at Desmond. "What's going on Des?"

Desmond sighs. "They say we're all mimics. It started with the drink machine."

"Oh that. I still can't get it out of my head! 'beep beepita beep beep beep beepita beeeeeeep.'"

Kes starts to rise from his seat again and catches himself, and sits back down swearing.

Band AU! Call of Duty Headcanons

Hello! Sorry I haven’t been on here in a while but I needed to get this out, its been stuck in my head for so long but I’ve been a little nervous to post/write about it, credits to @threehuskiesinatrenchcoat because I used his post for this!! enjoyyy 😘

(Characters Included: Phillip Graves, Alejandro Vargas, Valeria Garza, Rodolfo Parra)

Phillip Graves

Graves is going to be the bands lead vocalist. His country accent gives their music a catchy vibe, his voice really makes you want to turn the music all the way up and sing along the whole way through. During performances you can see him wearing a cowboy hat, ripped jeans with a brown belt and some cowboy boots. He may take off his white or gray wife-beater during the last few songs. He can get quite sweaty..

He loves his fans dearly and loves to receive their gifts. His favorite would probably be a decorated cowboy hat with his initials and a sweet note handwritten on the inside.

Alejandro Vargas

Alejandro plays bass guitar. He’s like the backbone paired with the band’s drummer and maintains a steady rhythm. He’s very skilled with his hands and his fans don’t hesitate to say so, it gets a good laugh out of him. His usual attire during performances can be a dark red t-shirt, jeans and boots. He usually won’t wear anything additional like hats, he says it kind of affects his focus when he’s trying to play. Although, on his wrists he wears some bracelets he’s received from fans.

During a world tour, the band played in Las Almas and received a large Mexican flag. The flag was signed by many fans and had some words of encouragement to every member as well. He has it set up in the band’s usual practice room.

Valeria Garza

Valeria is the drummer. She moves fast, skillfully, and hard. The tattoos on her strong arms receive a lot of attention. She wears her usual bandana around her neck, a dark gray tank top, some cargo pants and black boots. She’ll have at least one or two hair ties on her wrists, although she has about nothing to tie up. She’ll find the edits made of her online amusing, she won’t hesitate to favorite one or repost it. Valeria does those drumstick tricks, she’ll throw one up during a pause, catch it, and keep it going.

Her hairstyles change occasionally, a fan favorite is her hair braided on one side of her head with the other side let loose. The fans would love to see her in a long sleeved black turtleneck with her gold chain again but, she got way too hot the last time. What a sight to see..

Rodolfo Parra

Rudy is the lead guitarist, he plays the electric guitar. Not unusual for him to have a band-aid or two on his hands. He absolutely shreds on his guitar, he has some back ups incase something happens to his during a performance. He likes to wear a white t-shirt, light jeans and maybe some adidas sneakers too. His hands can get quite cold too, it’s a slight shock to a fan when they get a high-five or something..

He likes to decorate his guitar and he lets the fans join in on it, they bring in cute stickers for him. Back to having backup guitars, Rodolfo usually posts a story on the band’s Instagram to let their fans vote on which guitar he should use that night.

the second entry i accidentally deleted a while ago and couldn’t bring myself to rewrite bc :') ??? sobs. u would not believe the scream i scrumt that night. WAHH

the bathroom counter isn’t split in half between you and your boyfriend. your things get paired—keiji’s toothbrush sits next to yours in the cute matching holders he bought, your hair products are assorted next to his (he notices the new oil he got was missing from its spot, but says nothing), and the fluffy spa headbands hang next to each other on the wall.

you flip flop between believing it makes things faster or slower each morning, but while you sit on the counter, covering your mouth as you yawn, keiji says amused, “this makes it easier for me to take care of the both of us, huh?”

you shoot him a look. “it’s not my fault. no one should be up this early.”

“well, bokuto wanted everyone to have breakfast together so come on, i’ll help if you need me to,” he coaxes you softly, holding out your headband. you pout, movements groggy after you rub your eyes for the umpteenth time in the last 20 minutes.

you hop off the counter, and he turns the faucet on for you. it’s a quiet morning; the neighbour’s kids aren’t out in the backyard, nor is the neighbour across from you mowing their lawn. the only sounds are running water while you splash your face, and keiji humming the tune he’s complained has been stuck in his head for the past 2 days. a smile finds its way to you when he quietly sings the chorus. “thought you didn’t like that song?”

he pauses. “i mean it isn’t bad, it’s just annoying to think of the same 30 seconds over and over. i kind of accepted it’ll just be stuck in my head until the next one.”

there’s a tap on your arm while you wipe your eyes, and with them closed you reach for the towel keiji holds for you. “i can play you an equally annoyingly catchy one?”

“oh please don’t.”

“it’s the one stuck in my head. we could match.”

he scoffs and pinches your side, grinning when you try to elbow him back. “i’m fine suffering over here, thanks.”

there’s a lull when you put the towel away, the two of you looking at each other in the mirror. even after putting the water to cold, sleep still lingers and you almost yawn again. instead, you take the half a step between him and you, resting your head against his shoulder.

an arm easily wraps around your waist and a chaste kiss is pressed to your forehead. you can feel keiji's fingers rubbing circles against you as his lips linger on your skin. he teasingly murmurs, “you okay, or do you need me to brush your teeth for you?”

“mm, maybe i do.”

“yeah? okay.” your head falls slightly when he moves to pick up your toothbrush and toothpaste. “what? keiji, i was kidding.”

keiji ignores you, getting the brush ready before facing you. “say aahh,” he sing-songs, hovering the toothbrush near your face, not even trying to hide his smile. “keiji no—”

“no, keiji aahh.”

you can’t help laughing, and he takes the opportunity to sneak the toothbrush in. a choked sound of betrayal escapes you, but there’s nowhere to go with his hand where it is, the other positioned to catch anything that drips. so you stand there as he carefully brushes your teeth, your own hands awkwardly hovering as if you’d be able to help. keiji starts to hum his song again after praising you, “good job, baby.”

you know he really doesn’t mind even though it’s a silly thing to do, he probably finds it amusing, and you wouldn’t be surprised if he finished. so for a while you let him believe he’s going to, before you suddenly close your mouth and reach for his wrist. the action takes him by surprise, and just as quickly as you move, you get jabbed at the back of your mouth. “ah, ow.”

“shit, sorry, sorry.” keiji lets go of the brush for you to take, frowning even when you laugh. you wave him off but he's unconvinced, and you try to reassure him. the words come out oddly as you try to brush and not accidentally drool, “it’s okay. at least i didn’t choke or something. do you know how embarrassing it’d be if i died because you tried brushing my teeth?”

keiji huffs before shaking his head, the joke relaxing him a little. “you’re the one who moved. i was fully prepared to stand here for 2 minutes,”—he reaches for his own brush and the toothpaste—“also i think they’d find it silly and romantic.”

as soon as he’s moved back to standing up, you move to turn the faucet back on. “oh yeah? please tell that to my funeral audience.”

“‘kay, i’ll even photoshop your funeral photo so there’s a little toothbrush in the corner.” the image flashes in your head, and you manage to spit out your toothpaste before laughing, “i'd break up with you in the after life if i saw a toothbrush at my funeral.”

putting your toothbrush back in its spot, the counter calls for you again. you hop back on top and begin to swing your legs as you wait for keiji to finish. he shoots you a questioning look, but doesn't complain about your company. “so you really don’t want a little toothbrush friend?” he asks after a while.

you snort. “you’d put my murderer in my image?”

“the toothbrush is innocent, i think we’d be considered the murderers.”

“fuck,” you mutter, earning a huffed laugh in response. “homicide at 7 in the morning is a great way to go, i guess. still keep the toothbrush out, though.”

“okay,”—he spits out his toothpaste—”no funeral toothbrush photo.” and as soon as he's cleaned up, keiji leans against the wall, gesturing for you to join him. he asks softly, “ready to actually get ready now?”

for a second, the question confuses you; you forget you actually had plans today. keiji looks at you expectantly, a ghost of a smile on his lips. you see an opportunity and, jokingly, put on puppy dog eyes and pout, leaning against him again. “...help me get dressed?”

keiji takes the time to blink twice, processing your question. and then he laughs again, the sound filling the air and lightening your mood even more. maneuvering so he can intertwine his fingers with yours, he kisses your temple then turns to walk you back to the bedroom. “anything for you.”

okay so anyone following me can just politely scroll past this but the release of this album is genuinely so monumental, i just want to record some of my initial thoughts

every song sounds so incredibly good!!!! like first of all the production is absolutely god-tier, but with a cast of 钱雷, 尹约, 唐恬, 沃特艾文儿, 徐威, and 周天澈, how could it not be. but also, all of them have worked so closely with zhou shen over the years, so all the songs of this album just feel… so zhou shen. like it’s so him. it’s so perfect. in every single song you get to peer more into his worldview and that in itself is so 🥹

Track 3: “Restart” 重启 made me cry on the second listen. i felt emotional the first listen, but ig i didn’t pay as much attention to the lyrics (bc i have the chinese literacy of a grade schooler lol), but when he sang 太多次迷路 太多次失误 (“lost my way too many times, made mistakes too many times”) i started tearing up. especially with the lyrics related to trying to do his parents right, it just hit really close to home for me. and the line 重来几次才能清楚 (“it’s only clear after a few redos”)—personally it was a really healing song overall

Track 4: “The Memory Store” 记忆商店 is, if you forced me to choose, probably my fave from the album so far. it’s just straight up haunting. it’s so dystopian and so poetic. it makes me feel like, i can’t describe it properly, but do you know in the studio version of “Doomsday Spaceship” 末日飞船, in the bridge portion where zhou shen hums Clair De Lune, and its so haunting and full of wistfulness for a bygone time? that’s the closest description i can give you of how it feels.

when he sings 不虚拟的拥吻 想不想买 没噩梦的睡眠 耳边goodnight (“a non-fictitious kiss—do you want to buy? a sleep without nightmares, a goodnight in your ear”) is SO CHILLING AND SO SATISFYING AND SOUNDS SO GOOD its gonna be stuck in my head for the next few years. 他说想再荡个秋千 妈妈我想飞的高点 星球以光束穿越 妈妈我想落到地面 (“he says he wants to swing on the swings again—mom i want to go higher. the planet is travelling at the speed of light—mom i want to get off now”) okay brb i’m just gonna go into the woods and scream. 岛屿还未消失这个世界还曾下著雪 亲爱的我很抱歉 不朽的 没有了 没人记得 (“before the island disappeared, this world even used to snow. my dear, i’m so sorry—there’s nothing not decayed, no one remembers it”) SHENSHEN GET OUT OF HERE RIGHT NOW BEFORE I GO CRAZY

Track 5: “Alarm” 警报 is uhhh. alarming. apparently the english name is The Giver which also fits really well. it’s such a direct and kind of chilling way for shenshen to remind us to take care of ourselves, but also this song is gonna haunt me in a whole different way. every single line goes so hard and has so many implications. i might try to translate it later but for now, if you know you know 😵‍💫

Track 6: “Mind Your Manners” 少管我 OUR BELOVED. SO CATCHY SO ADDICTIVE. apparently in his interview with cosmopolitan magazine (which i still haven’t read yet), shenshen says this song (WHICH BTW HE IS PARTIALLY CREDITED FOR IN THE COMPOSITION AND LYRICS) is written for shengmi. ”希望歌迷们对自己说的：当我决定好做自己的时候,谁也别管，也管不了” (loose translation: “its my hope that everyone will say to themselves: what i decide for myself, no one else should dictate it, nor can they dictate it.”)

this song actually won over one of the football boys at my school. I'm not even joking. he sat next to me in english for a little while this last year and told me he loved our song. Taylor swift 1, football 0

but anyways, this song is so good. football boy is right. its so catchy, and the country twang in this song is so prominent. the music video is also so pretty! I think this would've made a good lead single. no offense tim mcgraw.

her adult voice will definitely push this up to a 9/10 on the rerecording, but it just sounds kind of shaky now (and she was 16, it's not unexpected. and she doesn't sound bad, but compared to ttpd or fearless tv, it's just obvious that she's really young) and the bridge isn't the best (again, she was 16. it's fine) this song is a 10 in my heart though

this song really lives up to its name. taylor even forgot to put it on the cd! or just mine, at least. what's funny is that I'm not even joking, it's on the disk and stuff but not in the lyric book

this on isn't her best work. I don't think it's unlistenable, but it's definitely not my first choice ever. that being said, I couldn't write it if I tried, so I really can't be talking.

i think this song is also kind of pick me girl energy, but so is ybwm so I don't really think it's that big of an issue.

i don't know where else to fit this in, but I have a VERY vivid image in my head from when I listened to this song as a small child. there's Taylor at a punch table at a school dance with the muse of this song, and the lights are out and there's a whole bunch of purple-y light everywhere. don't know where it came from, but it stuck with me

all things considered, this song isn't bad, it's just kind of forgettable. invisible, you could say (that was an awful, repeated joke. I'm so sorry)

her voice sounds a little bit whiny to me in this song.

this is another one that doesn't really leave an impression on me. I don't really have a strong opinion about it. it kind of reminds me of teenage angst. this is a song someone listens to after their first breakup (a relationship of approximately 2 weeks) and is just a little bit dramatic.

i don't hate the song, but I do probably skip it pretty consistently. this song and invisible are probably my only real skips on debut, which is not bad considering taylor was about 16 at the oldest when this was being made.

hi i’m sorry i realize i am one of many anons to talk to you today, but i just wanted to say i really love and appreciate seeing these discussions! i’m so happy that this is a space where i can feel we can voice our opinions and not get shot in the head like on twt

anyways, i also am not a fan of 3d, but i was kinda seeing that coming. jack harlow gives me the ick and i didn’t really like the lyrical content. i mean seven was seven, and bts has done songs before where they alluded to love and sex, but seven and 3d feel so … shallow? at least seven is catchy, but idk. idk how to feel about this route jungkook is taking, of course i will always love him but i am really glad that i feel safe to say here that i want to take a step back from this part of the journey.

i think it’s fair that jungkook may want to show a more mature side of him, considering his journey and how much he’s grown in the industry, but going from my time and begin to this just feels … disingenuous, i guess? and i hope if/when he releases his album it’s not just full english songs about sex

I must say, both Seven and 3D were instantly stuck in my head, they’re definitely earworms which is an art in itself and probably what they tried to achieve the most. still doesn’t make the songs good, though. the lyrics do nothing for me personally, neither did all the shirtless promo ahdhfj I don’t know I’m just not the target audience I guess! but there’re still sooo many who like this kind of sexy easy vibe and that’s totally valid. just as much as jungkook wanting to go more mature, I agree with you on that. it’s great to see he’s comfortable enough to talk about sex and the like, really! just, subjectively, it’s been too on the nose / done in a too superficial way for me 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m sure there’re more clever yet still cheeky ways to go about it. and yes, just as you said, the prior solo work to chapter 2 jk pipeline is very confusing. it’s just so so so different and unexpected, but that could have its own charm for him as an artist too, right? to go 180 and surprise everyone

I'm not gonna lie, the song reminds me of Turbulent Storm. From all the techno music to its progression, like it's calm before suddenly– yeah you know

But unlike Turbulent Storm that is catchy and can be sung, this Absolute Perfection doesn't really get stuck in my head.

Seriously, Turbulent Storm is so catchy though, I never read the lyrics but I can like Go ahead! Blablabla uhh Kimi no frontierrrr cross the storm! Koete Ike, koete Ike, yeahhhh

Exceed also lives rent free in my head, or any other enstars songs I've repeated so many times, so maybe? The Absolute Perfection will get stuck in my head too beyond the aaaaaaaa… aaaaaaaa…. Haaaaaaaaa…. Aaaaaaaa x2

But it's at last, like finally, a Nagisa-center song holy sheet, how many years have it been? Even in Adam, Melting Rouge Soul is Ibara-center. and in shuffle, it's just Sakumas. At least Hiiro got Vermillion and Hysteric Humanoid before the Black out see-saw but Nagisa's are just uh basic songs like Awakening Myth, The genesis etc. Oh there's Deep eklipus. But does it really count.

So anyway his voice would just be overshadowed by others, imho if I hear them sing together all I can hear is Hiyori

And the MV is also kinda lacking at a glance with the only effects being butterflies, light up tower, color-changing sky, lotus on the ground, fire sprinkler, some smoke & lighting (basic) and the random ray of divine light at the beginning. Oh and the giant gate.

But if I imagine that stage irl, it's extremely cool though, with sheer size of everything and the fricking 360° sky changing colors (the heck is this stage, are they in the Las Vegas round building). It's amazing.

And I absolutely love the giant gate, it reminds me of Virgo Shijima's ability.

Wait, I'm here to roast. So I get that their theme in this song is like eastern paradise, but those clothes are inexcusable. It's not that bad, but the white pearl necklace is just… horrible…

And also, a pearl is a gemstone (but not a stone). As a gemstone enjoyer, ofc Nagisa also has it in his feature scout 2 outfit.

His fs 2 is white, complete with absolutely perfect transparent white gloves, the pearls are perfect there.

And in SS, the outfit is also white.

Meanwhile, I dislike the pearl necklace on the MV with passion. It just looks gaudy or like Miss Piggy from the Muppets or Lisa Simpson (sorry not sorry). The illustrated picture doesn't look as bad as in the MV though.

hi oomf. i come to talk abt The Music. usually i would have sent something the moment i got done listening to it but i was fighting for my life (migraine 😔) but its another day and i've had more time to rlly digest the songs so at least my thoughts can be more coherent.

as a whole, i enjoyed myself a lot! it was very fun to listen to. there's something INSANE about hearing sh*wnu again. like wowwww i forgot how much i liked his voice??? it was such a joy, i think i ended up rlly latching to his lines. but hy*ngwon did rlly good too, i actually think his breathy tone (dunno how to describe it) was a rlly great fit for some of these songs, it was very neat. i feel like the entire ep sounded exactly like what i would expect from a unit with these two... idk but something about it just felt so natural. so i had a lot of fun! if i have any complaints, is that i wish it was a little longer... i RLLY could use a couple more songs, especially from hy*ngwon. as for more specific thoughts love me a little was reaaaally good, and i think it was the objective best choice as a title track so i'm glad they went with it. the chorus was SOOO good, its been stuck in my head all day. and the last part of the song was also sooo great, it had a rlly strong conclusion i feel. its rlly rlly cool to see hy*ngwon making title tracks, i reaaally hope he gets a chance to do it again. love therapy was not a fave but it had some rlly strong parts... i love love love the part where it's just hy*ngwon talk singing, it scratches such an itch for me. and that one high note by sh*wnu.... shaking throwing up /pos. roll with me was SO.... i think its my favorite. listen.... its the fucking piano... I KNOW IM SO PREDICTABLE BUT WELL.... it had a really fun darker vibe to it that i actually wasnt expecting, so i was very pleasantly surprised. and GODDD THAT PRECHORUS... TRULY A BANGER. play me was very cute, but i dont have too much to say about it. it was very fun but not a fav yknow. and lastly slow dance was SO fun and cute, its rlly romantic sounding and another personal fav. there's just something abt it. SO YES I HAD FUN... which is to be expected, i feel like its been a while since i've truly had anything negative to say abt anything mx releases which is sooo brainwashed of me but yknow 😔 ALSO i actually rlly dig the vibe of the cover. album covers in kpop are literally just text and a background, its getting so boring sjsbdbsbd yes this is still rlly simple but it has style to it yknow

I actually rlly liked love therapy, minus the chorus which was just alright (BUT IT GETS STUCK IN MY HEAD OK...). The synth was simply too sexy. Also the fact that the song starts out w "I need some therapy" is so funny. This could've been the mx version of vixx's "lalala I need therapy" song. If the chorus was stronger I think this song would be a fave

Omg hy*ngwon composed the title track? Good for him. And yeah, the chorus is super catchy, and the build up to it is so good. Also the guitar at the end was SO good (<- extremely predictable for me). I was just listening to it again and I caught the subtle saxophone and IT SLAPPED......
