At the Soul screening, there was an older boy with his father, and the boy commentated on the film. He laughed when the badger first appeared in the short, wondered about the opening logo music, asked a question about Joe’s story about being lost in the music, asked about the scene where Joe was promoted to full-time teacher, was excitedly reacting to Dorothea playing the sax, said “He kept his hat as a soul!”, and “The Great Beyond!” when it appeared, when the 106-year-old soul said she was waiting for this, the boy said “To die!”, laughed at “You can call me Jerry.”, laughed when the baby souls went through the Aloof pavilion, laughed when Joe got rejected to go to Earth for the first time, when they said “Is everyone here named Jerry?”, he said “Yes!”, said he knew which soul Terry was looking for, laughed at “This soul might be a handful!”, said “I think this is where she comes in…” during the soul partnering scene, laughed after Mother Teresa’s comment, said that Carl Jung was “basically me”, asked “Why would she (22) hate music?”, laughed at 22’s “Can’t crush a soul” joke, said “This is where we meet the lost souls!” when 22 and Joe ran to 22’s hideout, “She’s messing around with people!” when 22 threw sand balls, laughed after Joe and 22 got pushed into the hole, laughed at 22 saying “No way! I’m not moving!”, questioned the “Body test drive” thing, repeated Marge’s “Stay away!”, the dad said “Damn!” at the suggestion to call Dorothea Williams, the kid laughed when Cat!Joe used the razor, the kid laughed about the barber saving lives, laughed at 22 saying she got “road lollies”, gasped when Joe ripped his pants, complimented the busker performing in the subway, said “OOOH!” at the “Can’t rescue your career” comment, the dad pointed out the maple seeds, the kid said “I love her!” referring to Terry, the boy said Joe had to go back instead of performing, said “I think he forgot all about her!” when Joe was on the train, said “This is the best part!” during the Epiphany scene, said “I think she (22) becomes a lost soul!” during that same scene, and said “Those are his memories!” during that scene as well.

After re-watching Pixar's Soul on the big screen, I liked it much more on my second try. This is such a smart and philosophical way to tackle the concept of life, truly among Pixar's finest. I'm so glad I gave it another chance!
My ★★★★★ review of Soul (2020) on Letterboxd:
