Apparently in French, the direct translation of "little friend" is equivalent to a romantic partner. This is fitting for Blitzen and Hearthstone, who are not quite "just friends," not quite "just best friends," but also not quite romantic... but Hearth is absolutely Blitzen's little elf friend, and Blitz is definitely Hearth's little dwarf friend.

My entire Spanish novel collection

I'm not a huge fan of George Orwell, but I read both Animal Farm and 1984 in high school so I know they're short and easy to read. They'll be good practice.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is by far my favorite series of all time. None of the four (yes, four. Not five, not six, but four) are favorites by themselves, but taken as a whole I have yet to find anything more entertaining.

Jurassic Park is fun but VERY dry (as is Crichton's style). He has a lot of "look at all the research I did" exposition dumps, which I liked as a teenager but don't much care for now. If nothing else, I'll learn plenty of scientific vocabulary from Parque Jurasico.

The Martian is one of my favorite books of all time, tied for first with two titles below. I've read it a dozen times, I know it forwards and backwards. El Marciano was the first Spanish book I ever bought back in 2021, and I couldn't parse more than one word in ten. My reading comprehension has improved tremendously since then, and now I can read almost the entire thing (if I don't understand a certain passage, I know from memory of the English version which part I'm at in the story and can limp along without getting frustrated or confused)

The Road is one of the few books that has made me cry. Let me leave it at that.

The Time Traveler's Wife is another favorite tied with The Martian. I read all the other books on this list in high school or college, but I didn't pick this one up until relatively recently. I am currently in the process of reading La Mujer del Viajero en el Tiempo for the first time, and like The Martian I am able to use my knowledge of the English version to cross the gaps I don't yet understand.

World War Z is the third of the three way tie for favorite. I wanna say I read it for the first time in 2011 or 2012. It was before the movie came out, and I remember taking it with me to read at church camp one summer (it was a long bus ride to North Carolina, and I had to hide it from the chaperones all week). Every time I reread it, I pick up on some new aspect I missed the first dozen times around, so I'm excited to see if I come to any revelations in Spanish.

A family friend of mine moved to the United States from Honduras in her late 20s and learned English in part by watching Sesame Street with her kids, so I want to get Spanish versions of the Hunger Games trilogy and the five Percy Jackson and the Olympians books because I figure YA novels might help me learn Spanish easier than adult fiction. Right now I'm looking for simple titles that I'm already familiar with, but eventually I want to start buying Spanish books I've never read in English so I can fly without a net. My background is in Latin American Spanish, specifically Cuban Spanish, but my copy of El Marciano is European, so it shouldn't make too much of a difference which translations I buy (just so long as I keep series grouped together in sets so they're all the same)

Español Práctica 6/19/24

Está un poco nublado esta mañana. El tiempo es normalmente agradable aquí, pero me gusta nublado/lloviendo/sombrío tiempo.

Hhhh tengo hambre siempre. Quiero un sándwich de queso con sopa. Anterior mismo comí estos galletas de lima cosas. No galletas, pero dulces similar. Pero tan pronto como está 12 cocinaré.

 Nunca tengo tiempo libre a escribir hoy en día. Acabó mi clase de álgebra (¡Finalmente!). Conseguí un A. Mi examen parcial en español II va a ser la semana próxima. Es un examen oral así que estoy nerviosa. Todavía tengo dificultidades con escuchando y hablando. Estoy buscando alugien que me ayude practicar hablar, pero hay no muchos personas cerca de aquí que hablar español. Mi jefa conoce una maestro de español de escuela secundaria y ella podría estar interesada en ayudarme, pero no hasta que el año de escuela acaba.

Mi universidad no está ofreciendo español III para el semestre de verano así que voy a tomar antropología cultural en lugar de eso. Pensé de tomar clase de japonés, pero eso probablamente no es listo. jaja! My español es mal bastante. Hay no necesidad de confundirme mismo con dos idiomas. Aunque, estudio japonés un poco en Duolingo. No le cuentes a nadie. Será nuestro secreto. jaja!

I never have any free time to write anymore. I finished my algebra class (finally!). I got an A. My Spanish II midterm is going to be next week. It’s an oral exam so I’m nervous. I still have difficulties with listening and speaking. I’m looking for someone that can help me practice speaking, but there aren’t many people around here that speak Spanish. My boss knows a high school teacher of Spanish that might be interested in helping me, but not until the school year is over.

My college isn’t offering Spanish III for the summer semester so I’m going to take cultural anthropology instead. I thought about taking Japanese but that probably isn’t smart. haha! My Spanish is bad enough. There is no need to confuse myself with two languages. Even though I study Japanese a little on Duolingo. Don’t tell anyone. It will be our secret. haha!

hoy, me desperté muy tarde (alrededor de la una) porque pospuse mi alarma muchas veces. comí el desayuno y vi una parte de una película (pacific rim) con un amigo :) por ahora, la película es muy divertida e interesante. ¡me gustan muchos de los personajes!

mi mamá ha estado enferma entonces cuidé de ella. (su enfermedad no es muy mala, pero pienso que es demasiado complicado explicar en español y también no quiero decir todo el internet sobre la enfermedad de mi madre, lmao)

today, i woke up very late (around 1pm) because i snoozed my alarm a bunch of times. i ate breakfast and watched part of a movie (pacific rim) with a friend :) so far, the movie is very fun and interesting. i like many of the characters!

my mom has been sick so i took care of her. (her illness isn't very bad, but i think it's too complicated to explain in spanish and i also don't want to tell all of the internet about my mom's illness, lmao)

If you are learning spanish, I'm a native speaker. You can send asks and talk to me as a way of practicing. Although I might not be able to give you much on grammar and stuff because I am not a teacher. But you can use me as a way to practice conversation and to know some cultural things or differences.

So send me asks, and stuff you want to know and don't worry about bothering me because I find this useful as I am forgetting my own language.

Descriptions for example are now hard if they're not in english. So if you ask me to describe something or write something in spanish, I will. You'd be helping me too. I also love to keep my brain active. So~ you are welcomed♡

Un Cuentito/A Little Story

Lo que me gusta mucho sobre Rick Riordan... él es muy inclusivo. Pero no es esto solo. Nos introdució a una variedad amplia de gente, y nos dio la oportunidad a descrubrir nuestras identidades.

Recientamente, habia leido Magnus Chase y conocí Blitz y Hearth. Todo mundo está de acuerdo que ellos no son amigos, pero no son novios tambien, y por su esquinita del Internet, yo supé que pudieron ser en un qpr (relación queerplatónica... No sé la palabra adecuada). Tambíen, habia visto arte con Hearthstone con la bandera para gente quien no se sienten atracción romántica. Siempre he preferido relaciónes como la relación de Blitz y Hearth, más que unas romanticas. Todo esto me enseñó que soy incluido en el espectro aromàntico. Esta realización... time los pies en la cabeza. Estaba tan feliz. En mi opinion, es maravilloso que Rick Riordan ha hecho un universo en que nos podemos aprender, y ojalá que sus libros sean más populares en audiencias jovenes.

What I really like about Rick Riordan…he is very inclusive. But it is not only this. He introduced us to a wide variety of people, and gave us the opportunity to discover ourselves.

Recently, I had read Magnus Chase and learned about Blitz and Hearth. Everyone agrees that they are not friends, but they are not boyfriends either, and from their little corner of the Internet, I found out that they could have been in a qpr (queerplatonic relationship… I do not know the right word). Also, I had seen art with Hearthstone with the aromantic flag. I have always preferred relationships like Blitz and Hearth's relationship more than romantic ones. All of this taught me that I am on the aromatic spectrum. This realization… it made so much sense. I was very happy. In my opinion, it is wonderful that Rick Riordan has made a universe where we can learn about ourselves and I hope his books become more popular among younger audiences.

Spanish practice from yesterday!

Hoy es otro día aburrido de mi vida. Voy a tener algunos días divertidos en el futuro, pero hoy es el mismo de los otros. ¡Pero- ahorita miré el reloj y ya es 11:16, entonces las horas al trabajo han terminado la mitad! ¡Este fin de semana es el viaje a [redacted] con mis padres! Y este miercoles, tenemos un almuerzo con los empleos en mi oficina porque unas de las mujeres están retirando el viernes. Y en el siguiente viernes, esperando invitar a mi casa unos de mis amigos del trabajo para jugar a los juegos de mesa. También, yo tengo un nuevo trabajo de medio tiempo y espero puedo empezar a trabajar allá en tiempo completo y salto a mi trabajo actual.

La Piñata Vacía

Resumen:

El tío de Elena le regala un piñata. Necesita llenarlo antes de llevarlo a la escuela.

Elena abre su alcancía y va con su hermano a la tienda. En camino encuentra cosas en las que gastar su dinero además de dulces. Los pajaritos necesitan semillas, un gato necesita leche, un perro necesita carne, su hermano necesita nieve, y su madre necesita flores. Para cuando llegan a la tienda de dulces, sólo puede comprar unos cuantos dulces. Elena no puede llenar su piñata.

A cambio de su ambilidad anterior, los pajaritos le traen cerezas, su hermana le trea chocolates, y su mama le trea más dulces. Ahora la piñata está llena. Al día siguiente, en la fiesta del Cinco de Mayo de la escuela, a todos les encanta la piñata de Elena.

Pensamientos:

Esta es un historia clásica al estilo de Stone Soup. La heroína puede lograr su objetivo con la ayuda de personas (y criaturas) a las que también ayuda. Este es una lección para el lector sobre la bondad inherente del mundo.

2. Las cereza que traen los pájaros no tienen envoltorio. Ni los chocolates de su hermano. Cuando reboten dentro en la piñata, harán un gran desastre. La maestra de Elena no estará contenta.

3. El arte de libro de Viví Escrivá es precioso y detallado. La cara del gato es particularmente expresiva. Pero las cabezas de las personas están dibujadas en proporciones extrañas. Sólo el hermaño parece tener las proporciones correctas. La cabeza de todos los demás parece demasiado grande para su cuerpo. La artista es muy talentosa, por lo que esta debe ser una opción de estilo.

4. La finál pagina muestra una iguana verde, un quetzal verde y un armadillo verde. Creo que los armadillos suelen ser marrones o grises, y a veces, rosadas. No son verdes. Me pregunto por qué el armadillo es verde.
