Want to post more of my G/t Ocs so here’s Lynn Edda if she were in Persona 5

Here’s the thing, Lynn is my oldest and most fav G/t OCs I just haven’t posted everything I’ve drawn for her so I’m slowly but surely getting on that. I created Lynn for an original story called Lost Between the Pages which I do want to write and share in some capacity But that’s not what this post is about.

I’ve been in a Persona 5 hyper fixation lately, specifically Persona 5 g/t thanks to Even Small Acts of Rebellion. (Please go read it on Ao3) So I brainstormed with some of my friends what it would be like if Lynn was in P5 and became a phantom thief.

I’m currently writing her P5 AU story and plan on posting it here and Ao3 soon so keep and eye out for that. For basic AU details check under the cut. (Beware of Spoilers)

P5 Lynn AU

- Lynn is from America but she immigrated to Japan about 2 years before the game’s start. She lives alone in the walls of the bookstore on central street.

- She has a mouse she calls Despereaux who is basically her only companion until she meets the P5 crew.

- She meets Ryuji and Ren just after Madarame’s change of heart and before the infiltration on Kaneshiro’s palace. She gives the team some clues that give them insight on what’s going on central street during the Kaneshiro arc.

- Similar to Makoto she has an unpleasant encounter with Kaneshiro in the real world and gets saved by the team. However unlike Makoto, who enters his palace immediately, Lynn spends sometime after recovering from her encounter. (She was physically harmed and in a bad place mentally after) A few days into the thieves infiltration she follows them into the palace and awakens to her persona, Ozma.

- Ozma is a light based persona with healing abilities as well. Lynn’s weapons are twin sickles she fashions out of a pair of earrings. Her long ranged weapon is a gatling gun. When she joins the team she goes by the code name Reverie.

- Awakening to Ozma also gave her the unique ability to fly. She has wings made of light she can use to fly around although their power is based on how much SP she has. The more SP she has the stronger her wings, the less SP the weaker they get. If SP is depleted then she can’t fly at all.

- This AU is based on the fic Even Small Acts of Rebellion which establishes that the thieves get minor powers in the real world based on their persona’s powers. In the real world Lynn is able to heal minor wounds, manipulate light, and perform a double jump.

For some background on the designs for some of the vehicles because I never talked about them Sakuya, Lyrica, Medicine, and Komachi's vehicles were made by a friend of mine who wanted to volunteer designs for me to use, which I later refined to the designs I used. Sakuya's I specifically colored after DIO from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders due to haha funny jojoke Youmu's car is modeled after the Fiat 500, famously used by Lupin the Third in the eponymous anime series and extremely obvious because Youmu's ghost part is wearing Jigen's hat On the same inspiration, Yuuka's car is a yellow Mercedes Benz SSK 1929 also used by Lupin the Third in the 1971 anime. Reisen's motorcycle is based on a 1984 Honda Goldwing model I found with built in gatling guns because I thought it looked cool and is how I felt Reisen was like when I played Touhou 8 Mima's (and to an extension, Cirno's) is a Ferrari 321B, which was used in the first episode of Lupin the Third 1971 anime (which is also the main inspiration for that entire video's premise(I really like Lupin III)) The numbers on the race cars are a double reference, being that the number 9 is referencing this being the 9th Touhou game and 3 referencing Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream, alongside the 3 being that the entire video is just a giant Lupin III reference. Eiki's I just made something up on the spot because I was struggling to think on what to use so I just drew a box with wheels and rolled with it because it was easy to draw and I could make a joke about her storing hot dogs inside the trunk of it Cirno starts with a Mario Kart kart at the start because I thought it was funny Anyways my favorites are Weed Killer and Sanzu Rider thank you for making these!! Skylanders Review: Trigger Happy

Oh yes, my first fave. Let's talk about one of the many "subspecies" of Skylanders: The Gremlins. You see, since a major part of the Skylanders are the collectible figures, they would obviously need a way to make manufacturing them easier. So, while each figure is obviously unique in how it's detailed, they will often use a specific body type as templates for multiple figures. Similarly to how Neopets and their alternate forms work. Spyro shares the "Dragon Template" with several other characters, which we'll see soon, but for now we have the "Gremlin Template".

[Image: Trigger Happy is a short Gremlin with a Firey orange and sandy tan color scheme. His body is covered in uniformly orange fur, with the inside of his ears and the entire front of his body/the area acting as his face being tan. He has small stumpy feet and muppety three fingered hands with forearms thicker than the rest of his limbs. He has yellow eyes with black irises, almost always crooked, alongside fur around & in-between his eyes that's orange - making a pattern resembling a domino mask. He is almost always smiling with his comically large tongue hanging out, with teeth that are almost human-like with sharp canines. He wields two large pistols designed to fire gold coins, and in this specific image, he's straddling a golden cartoon missile Dr. Strangelove style.]

With Trigger Happy you'll be able to get what the body type is all about. A neckless and round being, more like the head itself is its entire body, supported by four limbs. There's not many of them, but each one is so unique it really does highlight how you can stretch one body type in so many ways.

Trigger Happy is a mysterious little guy, being the token "crazy loose cannon" as his name would suggest. He simply showed up one day, explicitly role playing as a western hero type, and protected frontier towns from bandits with custom-made guns that used coins as ammo. He's a Tech Skylander, as being an engineering savant is basically second nature to all fictional Gremlins, and he can even bring out a Coin Gatling gun as a special move.

He has a high pitch, kinda grating, voice; but in early Skylanders trailers he has an accent that sounded like an incomprehensible mix of Spaniard and Frenchman - almost like he's a Team Fortress 2 character.

In fact, doesn't that game have its own...

Anyway, I love these reviews because it really does highlight why I love my favorites. Trigger has a simple design, but making one of your playable characters marketed towards children a gremlin packing heat is just instantly hilarious. And it's only today, as I'm writing this, that I realize that the pattern of fur on his face is meant to resemble a domino mask. That really ties together his "Goldslinger aesthetic," though I still think he needed a ten-gallon hat.

Alternates: I don't know if I'll talk about all the recolors and occasional redesigns some Skylanders get, but I feel like I should tell you guys that Tigger Appy gets to wear an Evel Knievel Daredevil's costume for Superchargers, the game where the Skylanders get to Mario Kart with Bowser and Donkey Kong. Both he and the other two I reviewed by now have another-other form, but they're so weird we'll have to review those things by themselves down the road.

We'll get to Gimmicks once we get to Giants.

Trigger Happy is a fun exploration of his trope, and it's nice to know that the Skylanders team had bangers right out the gate considering he's one of the first few original Skylanders designed after the beta five.

Motto: "No Gold, No Glory." - Great Catchphrase, even if it's very obvious that it doesn't apply to him specifically. His lore outright states that the townsfolk that he saves get rich from the amount of gold coins his battles leave behind. I think that concept applies to the NPCs of Mario and Sonic games too, considering those two mascots become ATM machines whenever they walk into anything with a sharp corner.

The same thing happens to babies by the way. 4/5.

Our resident main character, (and last of the core four) Megatron!

Meg’s civilian name is Megan, the town’s newest resident and magical girl. She has universal vitiligo and a love for grunge and boxing.

Megan’s magical girl abilities so far are limited to increased durability and strength, and her weapon is the classic fusion canon. However, her canon has the ability to open up into a Gatling gun for extra strength, a feature she uses quite often.

Megan is actually based on pre-war megatron. Specifically D-16 rather than Megatronus (though she has a hint of that personality in her). So she’s a lot more mellow. She also takes some inspiration from tfa’s megatron.

She’s by far my favorite design out of the main cast, both civilian wise and magical girl wise. And now that I’m finished these concepts I can start all the art ideas I have for the girls 💕

I actually don't remember any official life-sized Bastion statue (there were official life-sized statues made for stuff like cons and such, just not one of Bastion), but what I was referring to in that last post was, as far as I'm concerned, the "white whale" of Overwatch figure collecting.

The incredible, the elusive, and the unauthorized:

DX9 Freeman

A fully articulated and transforming translation of bird-loving bot into roughly 1/12th scale figure form, this is a godly Bastion figure.

It comes with everything you'd expect and hope for besides maybe an alternative welding hand. There's a little plastic Ganymede, and even treads and a cannon to you can swap out the gatling gun and legs for to replicate their Tank configuration, though now it'd be more accurate to just swap the legs for Assault mode and swap the cannon for Artillery mode, which like. the design was accidentally future proofed for the OW2 rework, I just find that neat.

Aside from the tank parts though, the transformation is completely legit. You bend the legs to form the stand, fold up the arms, retract the head, and swivel the torso around and pull down the back cannon to get it into turret form, just like the in-game animation. It's a testament to both the exceptional amount of thought and effort put into the character's original design, and the engineering required to make it into a functional model.

So... what's the catch. Obviously the perfect Bastion figure doesn't come without a catch, right?

Well. Notice how I called this figure "DX9 Freeman". Why isn't it just called... y'know, Bastion?

You might've been able to deduce by this point that this figure is in fact: Unofficial. DX9 is, from what I can gather, a Chinese company that specializes in making high-quality unofficial transforming figures for stuff like Transformers. Naturally, when a mega popular and relevant new game comes out with an iconic transforming robot, they decided to make this figure.

And this was back in 2017 or so, well before the Hasbro line, with I think the only thing out by then being maybe the Tracer Figma. It was slim pickings if you wanted an Overwatch guy on your shelf back then, so "Freeman" here caught on. Even when other figures started rolling in, there were no official figures of Bastion. There was a Lego set and an above-average Funko Pop in terms of both looks and size, but nothing else would just about perfectly fit in line with the proper action figures.

Sadly though, it was a spark short-lived, as it is basically impossible to find the figure now. The direct site to find it has been out of stock for years, and I doubt many people who already have one are willing to part with theirs for cheap, if at all.

So yeah. This is by far the best but most elusive Overwatch figure out there as far as I'd say. It's a basically perfect recreation of the character (save for a flat paint job, if you wanna be picky), but by nature of being an unlicensed figure from 6 years ago now, jesus christ, it didn't stick around for long and is nearly impossible to come across today, and even if you miraculously somehow find a secondhand seller today, I have a feeling it ain't gonna be cheap.

If I could magically wish for any mundane object that wouldn't technically benefit my life in any drastic way, it'd be one of these. Bastion's one of my favorite designs in a game full of fantastic character designs, so having a big ol' unit of a figure that offers a physical way to showcase the coolest part of that design with the game-accurate transforming feature would be... more personally exciting than I'm willing to admit.

Anyways yeah, full breakdown of every figure line and what characters are in which coming soon. Wanted to clear up Bastion first anyways, both because it's such a cool figure and also such a specific asterisk that's worth bringing up but not totally fair to include in a breakdown of official figures that are more easily and consistently available for most people without getting lucky.

So because this is frustrating, let me show you what bad faith, and moving the goal post looks like. All of these were comments from this post. So that no context is missing when I talk about this.

Now below are three comments that were posted the first in response to my post you find at the end, and then the others in regards to comments that I made. You can view them for yourselves, but I’ll elaborate on why this person is dishonest and why they keep moving the goal post. 

I am not a mind reader, I can only go off of context I am presented. And with that said here are the comments:

Now from the first to the last you will see one thing very clearly. This person has zero understanding of history and of the second amendment. 95% of constitutional scholars all pretty much say one of two things. Either that the militia IS the people of the united states as a whole, or that the separation is meant to imply that not just formed militias, but also the people, of the US have a right to bare arms. 

This is further reinforced by the sitting comma in the Amendment. “~The right of the people to keep and bare arms shall not be infringed.” Note how the amendment did not say, “The right of the militia”, or, “The right of the military”. It specifically states, “The right of the people”. So this person starting off is not doing well. Now lets look at the second and third post. specifically the part that says

“The second amendment regulates single-load muskets and requires belonging to a well-regulated militia”

I already debunked the last part of this. But lets look at the opening half. Where in the second amendment does it say, “Single-Load Musket”. Also regulations are infringements. The amendment itself states, “Shall not be infringed”. And at the time that this legislation was drafted and signed into the core of our founding, we had very high yield weaponry. We had cannons. We had Puckle Guns. We had Gatling guns. We even had armored ships strapped with arms from front to back in varying weaponry. 

Fact of the matter is weaponry always advances at a fast pace. Even if we didn’t have fully automatic sub machine guns at the time, there were many guns that were very similar. Specifically Gatling Guns. Which while mostly stationary, were guns that could mow down entire front lines of soldiers. It’s also even more interesting to find out most guns believed to be illegal right now are not even illegal. They are just highly regulated. Which is very antithetical to the constitution. 

But look at the third post for a moment. 

“I named only one type of military weapon existing at the time so I’m wrong?”

So stuff like this pisses me off and makes me believe that 70% of the people on this site are insufferable minors with their heads up their asses, or uneducated assholes. This is what moving the goalpost looks like. If you look at the first quote above, it looks like they are trying to imply that the second amendment ONLY applies to “Single-Load Muskets”. In the second you can clearly see they’ve moved the goalpost to say, “Egad! As if only naming one gun implied that they amendment only applied to one gun or that no other existed.” 

Yeah, no you very clearly implied that either no other forms of fire arm exists, or you implied that the second amendment, which only states “Keep and bare arms” only refers to one firearm that existed at the time. Which has no standing in the slightest. As again, the constitution does not say, “The right to keep and bare Single-Load Muskets shall not be infringed”. It says “Arms”. Meaning armaments. It was the founding fathers belief that the civilian populace should be armed in the same way as a standing militia or military because they had just fought off a tyrant. Many left for the “New World” because of that tyrant. 

Now for this gem. 

“And "government boots", really?  You know you sound like a conspiracy theorist idiot, right? mY rIghts, mY frEEdOm, get some better arguments please”

So it seems I have to explain tyranny: 

In 1911 Turkey established gun control for the “safety of the citizens”. Then from the years 1915-1917  1.5 million Armenians were rounded up and killed. This point in time is I believe known as the Armenian Genocide.

In 1929 the Soviet Union established gun control, and then from 1929-1953 20 Million dissidents were killed though various methods. 

In Germany they established gun control in 1938. Then from years 1939-1945 we have the Jewish genocide. 13 Million Jews and others were killed. 

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964-1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians died. 

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971-1979, 300,000 Christians were killed. 

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million people were killed. 

All of these are groups that could not defend themselves. And all of them were told that the gun control was for their own safety. Now for some more fun stats:

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent

Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent

Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

And do these stats show up at all in their statistics? Of course not. Because if they did showcase them, then the citizens of their country, and the world, could point at them as an example of failed gun control. 

The reason that the US’s gun statistics are so insane is because unlike in other countries, the US groups all it’s shootings under one umbrella. It doesn’t matter if it’s gang shootings. It does not matter if it’s suicides. It does not matter if it was self defense or justified shootings by cops. They list all of it in plain view for the people and the world to see. 

And to you, Ami-Ven, it’s clear you don’t know history. Because if you did, you’d see a pattern here. When the UK almost fully banned guns, it’s knife crime went up nearly 500%. And unlike gunshot wounds, knife wounds are hard to patch up (though to be fair this also depends on the caliber). So it’s not a conspiracy to say that tyranny can rise up. Hell I’d be willing to bet if Trump were still in office right now you’d be screaming “FASCISM” at the top of your lungs, all the while still screaming about how we should give those same “Fascists” the guns.

If you really believe that the world today is beyond that, then why is Russia in Ukraine. Why is China threatening not just Taiwan, but still in the middle of a genocide of Uighur Muslims? We are Middle eastern countries still making Africans slaves? Why did Canada destroy the livelihoods of dozens of people possibly 100′s by nuking their bank accounts, destroying all their income and savings in the process. 

You need to open your eyes. You’re lack of understanding of both history and current world problems is why you are too sheltered to discuss gun rights and gun control. If you had a point at any point in time, I’d have broken that down. And maybe even tried to find middle ground with you. However, you lied, doubled down, and then you moved the goalpost from what you said in the first place. Just because you probably live in the west does not mean you are beyond the reach of tyranny. Western countries have been implementing more and more demands and mandates that would make tyrants of old blush. And they use blind followers like you to help push it all. 

Anyways. Maybe brush up on history a bit. And listen to legit constitutional scholars. Watched 3:10 to Yuma last night (which is a just okay movie where an awesome last twenty minutes doesn't quite make up for a really lame first hour and a half being mostly boring, but I disgress). It gave me a game idea I wanted to write down. I probably will never make it.

Payday but in the Wild West. That's it. That's basically the idea.

It just feels like there's huge opportunity for hyper-specific objective-based gameplay in unique setpieces where you kill tons of authority figures while doing multiplayer group-based objectives.

Robberies where you scope out an 1800s bank before shooting your way out of town. Staging a hijacking on a moving train where you all start as passengers in different trains and have to locate each other before starting the heist. Ambushing a heavily armoured army stagecoach that has been trapped in a mountain pass while fending off reinforcements. Stealing railway bonds from an office and escaping across rooftops. Assassinating a group of Pinkertons rooming in a hotel/saloon before burning it down.

Objectives like slowly hauling dynamite to an position to blow an armoured traincar open, lugging heavy gold bars out the back of a bank, dressing in heavy tin-can armour to withstand revolver fire as you escape, locating hidden entrances and exits in unfamiliar towns, having team members person cover fire on a gatling gun while you perform a lockpicking activity. Basically all the trappings of a Payday game in a Wild West format.

Basically, if you designed an all-new, original dragon that could be incorporated into the Hijack/HTTYD, what would it be like? Ref points include Dragon Class, unique abilities other than firepower, & general physical appearance (e.g. color palette & physical traits).

(Side-note: It doesn't have to be a fully-drawn dragon, you can just make a list if you like. Whatever you feel most comfortable to do, I don't want this to come across as placing down anxiety)

There's two routes you can go with here, either the dragon has some sort of gun growing out of it, maybe like the war path pain from Naruto, or it's a normal dragon manning a gun, this doesn't fit into httyd AT ALL.

Ok so we can go off the object variation route if say, they use silver to pay for stuff in httyd so maybe it's a dragon specifically connected to silver as an element, and it covers itself in silver armour and can draw the metal to it like a magnet.

Behold, for I have vanquished the mighty ice worm! On the third try, too. The first one I restarted cos I was just like… overwhelmed: it’s very hard to track and that stun needle thing does NOT fire quickly. The second time I got blown up once it got to its final stage where it’s going all nuts. Third time was the charm.

Terminal armor is fucking great, by the way. I’ve won multiple fights now (Rusty in the arena; Raven in the campaign) with 00001 AP because of that mod. Still rocking the same build I was before, although 1) I painted it red because I was finding it too hard to take the story seriously with the whole Hello Kitty thing, and 2) post-ice worm, I just got some new bell bottom-lookin’ legs I’m interested to try out. I tried a couple different armaments (including a very snazzy-looking laser rifle), but haven’t found one I like better for the RF slot than the Gatling gun. Gonna try this machine gun though. Also just switched out my booster for the first time in a minute, but have felt no need to fuck with the generator or FCS—my outputs are fine.

Also, breezed through B-rank arena. That one dude was giving me grief the other night, but this afternoon I got through him and everyone else (if by the skin of my teeth, as previously noted) in one try.

Story reflections:

It feels like the pace of the story kicked up a notch in the last few missions. I met (and blew up) a previous Raven, which I suspect is an allusion to the earlier games in the series? But I don’t know. They seem more principled than just about anyone else, so that’s something.

Then there was the journey back into the cave, wherein 2 things stood out to me. 1) The phrase “deploy Ibis,” in response to some kind of “mutation.” Which seems to suggest the whole Fires of Ibis catastrophe wasn’t some kind of accident or natural occurrence—it was intentionally done to destroy something specific. And 2) Learning more about Dolmayan and what his whole deal is. He seems, from the recovered writing, kinda… a few marbles short of a full bag, let’s say, but then again I am also hearing a disembodied female voice, so who am I to say?

It was interesting watching the two corporations and the RaD all come together, and even flatter one another (I’m thinking of that one Red Guns guy trying to convince Rusty to come to the “other side,” that bit). Especially after listening to Ayre talk about Raven (the other one), that ambivalence kind of underlines the whole… unprincipled nature of everyone here. Hired guns following orders from self-interested manipulators, no real consideration of the actual consequences of their actions by anyone. All that. That seems very much at the heart of this game.

I’m still not sure what Ayre means when she describes the Coral as her family. She calls herself a wave in the ocean (or something like that) but like… that’s sort of vague. Whatever she/it is, it’s obviously related to 1) what Dolmayan encountered, 2) whatever was mutating that precipitated Ibis, and 3) whatever it is Walter is actually after here.

The PS5 screen tells me I’m 60% through the game. So we’ll see. And I’ve been told that doing an NG+ run is pretty essential cos there’s different content, so I might zoom through one of those once I’m done.

In other video game news, I’ve got Tears of the Kingdom on deck, I just downloaded Sea of Stars, and I’ve decided to get myself an Xbox and Starfield for my birthday because I’m a grown-ass person and I can afford it. I’ve never had any of the Xboxes, but as I understand it, 1) the Series X is hella backward compatible, and 2) Game Pass is a thing. Which opens up a lot of possibilities.

RWBY: After The Fall Review

Written by E.C. Myers, story by Kerry Shawcross and Miles Luna.

The Bottom Line: About as mediocre as RWBY gets.

I'll start by saying that this feels like a fanfic. And not the sort of fanfic that you wait with baited breath for each update or the kind that changes your life or even the sort that you have a hearty laugh with (or at), the sort where they take a group of side characters and huck them through an excuse plot and sometimes the characters you remember from the show are there. SOMETIMES.

Basically it revolves around Team CFVY who were just there in the actual show to look cool and fill out Beacon Academy, the setting of the first three volumes, as upperclassmen. As such they were threadbare characters then and honestly this does relatively little to provide them with depth.

They do have depth now, yes, but it's still not very deep.

The biggest issue with this novel is how it is structured. In essence, one half of the novel is "what happened then" and the other half is "what is happening now". A smart author like Myers is, to be frank, trying to be would intertwine these thematically and narratively. It reminds me of the parallel chapters of Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, except without Haruki Murakami or any of the charm. Oh and also the pattern gets broken enough that there is no real pattern.

The main plot is that someone put out a distress signal and these four teenagers are responding in their official-but-still-training capacity. They stumble on the refugees from the settlement that put out the beacon. They follow them to another settlement and figure out that what is happening is that someone is causing mood amplification, which draws in Grimm (monsters). There is not a long drawn out question of this mystery; it happens quickly because half the wordcount is dedicated to the B-plot.

The B-plot traces CFVY's time at Beacon Academy before and during canon. One particularly egregious section involves setting up CFVY to be friends with RWBY and yet this doesn't go very far in terms of narrative. If you're here to explore those relationships — sorry! You don't get much more than the bare introductions between these characters. If I were editing this, I would de-emphasize or cut these chapters and instead focus on expanding the present, using the bright moments of the past as high contrast against the bleakness of the current situation.

The intercutting harms the stakes here because there's not a question of how Narrative B in the past fed the characters into Narrative A because not only is the reason they're in Narrative A a canon event (depicted in the show) but the prologue also lays it all out almost immediately in exposition.

The highlight of the novel IMO is their horrifying failure vaguely alluded to in RWBY volume 2, a genuinely frightening and appropriately horrifying and grim in-the-moment incident, yet the narrative weight and the parallels between that situation and the situation CFVY currently faces is underplayed. The point of this is that they have failed before and this is their self-considered shot at redemption but we really aren't in these characters' heads deep or long enough to get that.

The worldbuilding added in this book also creates issues.

The book opens with the members of CFVY fighting sand crabs, which are indigenous non-Grimm predatory animals. Over the course of the book there are two more instances of the author creating other non-Grimm creatures, which feels like something the worldbuilding for the core show did not establish at all and has not for three of the four major locations visited so far in its course.

Additionally, Coco's weapon — for those who haven't seen RWBY, a purse that transforms into a massive rotary chaingun — is specifically called a Gatling gun. The Gatling gun is specifically named after a real man from history, Richard Jordan Gatling, which creates more questions than it solves.

Also, this is a novel, unlimited by modeling and budget — why are we stuck with only four members of Beacon Academy's faculty?

And of course the largest question that loomed over my head was — if the desert is such a terrible place for people to live as depicted in the novel, why do they live there?

The characterization for CFVY is spotty and at times offensive — Coco is treated as perpetually horny, to the point of ogling refugees marching across the desert in revealing clothing. Fox and Yatsuhashi are given scraps of characterization — primarily detailing incidents in their pasts that shaped them — which is better than nothing but I still found them comparatively weak as characters.

If there's a character I would personally center the narrative around it would be Velvet Scarlatina. She's a somewhat meek, kind, yet strong-willed girl with a skillset that revolves around summoning the digital ghosts of weapons she's photographed — at the cost of that weapon's photograph being destroyed. This automatically means she has to be clever in the application of her skillset. Once or twice it is brought up that, as a given weapon's wielder is dead or missing, she will be unable to use that particular weapon ever again. Used appropriately, this could create an interesting narrative tension of when to use or when not to use one of these.

The other new-to-canon characters introduced are given relatively shallow characterizations; even the surprise villains of the novel lack any compelling desires of their own. Unfortunately, this is because they were hired by the antagonists of the sequel, and the book ends with a hook for that.

In conclusion: one of the characters wears a chainmail crop top, which has to be the most useless armor I've ever seen. Also, just look up where the name "Gatling gun" comes from next time.
