I want a society where autistic children and adults don't have to be forced to mask. I want a society that understands and accepts autistic people for who they are. As we’re in Black History Month, I think of the progress we’ve made as a nation - in the regard to inclusion and diversity. I’m hopeful in our mission of fostering an environment that’s acceptive of everyone. I likened that vision with a space shuttle blasting off into space. Where to? I don’t know, but it’s doggedly determined to find a better tomorrow. Someone asked me why most of my designs are space-related. I like space. I find the universe so exciting. A person can literally spend their entire life researching space and won’t come close to a fraction of the power that it possesses. It goes on and on and on and on. And even if one were to theoretically find the edge, space would continue to grow from that edge infinitely. I liken that idea to neurodiversity. The spectrum continues to grow. Reaching new heights every second of every day. We can spend our entire lives studying all of the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of autism, but we will never find that edge. We will never find a limit. When I started making shirts, I only wanted my designs to uplift the wearer. To convey how powerful and amazing the spectrum is. So I use space as an inspiration; I always try to add a star that glimmers in the dark or an earnest rocket that blasts off into the unknown. One of the hallmarks of a child with autism is their desire to be alone. Author Ester Schaler Buchholz wrote, “autistic individuals teach us about our self-protective alone reserve. They are versatile in using untapped resources for comfort and soothing which we in our busy lives rarely bother knowing.” Being alone can be a way to settle the neurodiverse mind and soothe senses, much like a baby happily playing with their toes in a crib, all alone in their thoughts, sometimes laughing out loud or cooing. They do this for their own pleasure. Individuals with autism are good at enjoying their own company.
