Even a prince has summer homework.

I am falling asleep drawing this but I was determined to sketch something today no matter what.

so...snape fans have speculated where cokeworth is located in the england map or what it's equivalence would be. i've seen people speculate it's probably up north perhaps. maybe snape's a northerner.

however.

it's been stated multiple times that cokeworth is in the midlands. so we're thinking northampton, shropshire, stoke, birmingham.

but i prefer to think it's in the black country. mainly for these reasons:

1. cokeworth is an industrial town, even if spinner's end seems mainly abandoned, and the black country was the birth of the industrial revolution.

2. the black country was known for steelworks, glassworks and cokeworks which is maybe where the town got its title from.

3. the black country suffered from high unemployment due to the closing down of a lot of industrial sites in the 60s and 70s which ties into the idea of spinner's end being practically desolate now, and also the strain on the snape's household's economic position.

4. petunia met vernon dursley and marries him. his job was being the director of a firm that made drills. which are made of steel. steelworks anyone?

5. which leads to my last and favourite theory; petunia marrying vernon who perhaps also came from the black country then decided to name their child after something close to home. a nearby town perhaps - dudley.

The children of Cokeworth, while making their way along the river bend and past the old mill, on their yearly pilgrimage to collect candy and show off their costumes, chant “Trick or Treat” and giggle amongst each other, overflowing with cheer for the holiday.

However… one frequent comment stands out among the whispers of ‘who’s house gives out the best candy’ and ‘which street is best decorated’ or ‘what costumes are most frightening’.

So unlike the joy and secrecy, there is a sense of sadness and confusion as the children lament that “the Dracula man with the long hair isn’t home”.

And so, like in the Wizarding world, the muggle children of Cokeworth have a notably somber Halloween in the year 1981.

She liked to draw him in the evenings. He was not particularly fond of that, as her interest in him still seemed foreign.

His book was finished, her picture hopefully as well.

It was time to rest now.

The chapter illustrations were always one of my favorite things about the books.

Mary GrandPré drew all the illustrations for all seven Harry Potter books. These I've selected have always been my favorites, owing to the facts that they were some of my favorite chapters and characters but also because of the drawing itself!

Eileen Snape

Consider: if Snape showed up to school already adept in spells, hexes, curses, etc., how might he have become so adept? The many books we later see at Spinner's End, were many of them brought by Eileen Snape from the pureblood home she left? And surely she must have given young Sev some guidance in magic. She is an intriguing character,and must have had some formative influence on Sev, but I rarely see anything about her.

The Troubles War

Snape's character is still surrounded in mystery, but it becomes easier to piece together the character we know as the the Potions Master when we contextualize the muggle world he inhabited as a kid in the slums of Spinner's End.

He was 9 when Led Zeppelin I was released. Perhaps he listened to Dazed and Confused on the radio while his father went to work at the factory.

The First Wizarding War began around the same time as the Troubles and the Second Wizarding War ended around the same time in 1998.

While the Half Blood Prince nickname hints that Snape was eager to remove any trace of his muggle background, I don't think that Snape was ever able to let go of the muggle world he hated. He continued to live at Spinner's End until his death and he was intelligent to know that to be successful as a double agent, he had to absorb and be fluent in all settings.

We see this throughout the book as he possessed the ability to speak eloquently (even poetically at times) conversing with the likes of Malfoy, reserved and reverentially to Voldemort, callously and harsh to his students, tongue-tied with Lily, and vulnerably with Dumbledore.

...just keepin' these thoughts in mind while brainstorming story ideas 🖤

A reminder that Spinner canonically compares himself to Dabi and feels inferior to the rest of the League of Villains.

Part of the reason he allowed AFO to manipulate him is because he wanted to be reliable, as in he wanted to be stronger to be of use to Tomura. So again, he's canonically kinda jealous not only of Dabi's quirk, but of him as a person.

thinking about how in fifth year, after severus called lily a 'mudblood' and lily pointed out his dirty underwear as a 'don't think you are better than me, remember where you come from' moment, and severus consequently lost her friendship as his apology was invalidated by his aspiration to become a death eater, so he proceeded to call himself the 'half blood prince' in his sixth year, acknowledging and accepting his muggle and magical heritage, even going so far to continue to live in spinner's end...

Holidays are usually time of joy and peace spent with loved ones.

However there was rarely any peace or joy in the Snape household.

The boy hoped he would one day have that.
