Kjo peaked in k3g. That's it. Now he just tries to recreate that charm with every movie but alas the actors are not that iconic yet. Or because we've already seen the best.
Anyway Raichands forever. They come with insane wealth and even insane emotional trauma.
Husband sushing wife. We have it. Father not caring about his son. We so have it. Youngest child ignored even when he's right behind you. Get behind me Rohan.
And then we've the sweetest romance that gets way too hot for Indian living rooms for some instances. Also Miss iconic Poo. She was so stupid 😭
Anyway I still cry when I watch Nandini running to the door when Rahul and Rohan hug. I still cry when Rahul reunites with Nandini. Basically yeah, k3g my beloved, no-one can make me hate you.

hello omg would you be willing to expand your thoughts a little on the throwaway shah rukh x south asia tag on the manipulative hurt/comfort post because i dooo get it a little bit as someone who grew up in an india where he had almost as much sway over the masses as any political figure (also would you agree that he no longer has that kind of social capital as he once did, with how the country has increasingly given in to the ruling party’s political manipulation, esp vis à vis the. well. communal rhetoric)
I think again this is v similar to what I said about Vale! I wasn't an Shah Rukh girl growing up, his deal didn't really appeal to me but I think it has made more sense to me with time. But there is a reason he is one of India's last true superstars. I think the post bacchan era where cinema halls were more ubiquitous and going to the movies became a bit more democratised he was truly able to produce some emotionally intense and tasteful work when films were becoming bigger cash grab opportunities and quality was going down the drain. SRK's real gift (quite like Vale) is that he's simply too sharp but with a real emotional vulnerability at the center. He got his start with Delhi's theater scene and carried those chops and that honest sentimentality to the screen in a way idt anyone else has since. And that's really what's at his core, he is incredibly smart, he knows he wants to be loved and he has done what he could to get that publicly, there is an honesty to him that I can appreciate.
And you're right he did hold some political sway at some point because he signified the kind of diversity the country was okay accepting pre 2014. A Muslim man who privately but steadfastly holds his faith and married a Hindu woman. The idea of a person like this would cause many people to short circuit in the current age. Imo srk still tries to bring some of the tolerant values back but we are a bit too fargone in what we have become. I don't look to srk as my political messiah tho, and he has never wanted to be one (imo), so I guess there is not much to be done there.

• General • Romantic [both sfw and nsfw]
I - GENERAL
he has issues okay, like a lot of issues. raichands are NOT a normal family from any angle.
older sibling syndrome, attachment issues, self identity issues, anxiety, perfectionist behavior, self doubt, self loathing etc. the list goes on.
he needs a therapist.
anyways, is very close to his mother who by the way isn't as good as she looks in the movie. this has nothing to do with how I feel abt jaya bachchan I am talking abt nandini raichand here
she was relatively immature emotionally and not well accustomed to raichand household when rahul was adopted.
that made her very unsure of whether to emotionally handle herself or give it to her adopted son.
was very protective of him on some instances while other he was left totally unguarded emotionally and otherwise, that created a internal conflict in him.
the friction became clear crack in his sense of belonging and identity when he found out he was adopted. another exhibit of nandini and yash being shit parents, why was a eight year old able to find out he is adopted
by the time he reached say 12, rohan was born and the older sibling syndrome kicked it pretty fast. I will tell you why
see rohan was said to be a miracle child right? but him being born took a toll on nandini and yash is a absent father most of the time.
basically it a early teen rahul managing his baby brother and recovering mother along with daijaan before he eventually left for boarding school.
he was bullied in the said school for being shy, soft and goody-two shoes.
it gave rise to his anxiety issues and he had a handful attacks of it throughout his 10 years of board schooling.
when he came back from his boarding school he faced some sharp edged criticism for his conduct and how raichands weren't this meek and soft kind of, from yash.
it made him think a lot about himself and how "wrongly" different from his father, creating a sense of self doubt and self loathing in him.
It made him slowly change his whole style and come to be the confident, charming rahul we see in the movie.
he can cook really well.
has trouble sleeping, his life away from raichands very slowly nursed it to let him have some amount of sleep eventually but still it's hard for him to fall asleep.
has some degree high functioning depression.
HE NEEDS CARE AND ATTENTION.
II - ROMANTIC
SFW
makes the first move.
old school flirt.
buys flowers regularly.
can be clingy at times.
will cook for them whenever he gets the chance.
movie date nights.
gifts as love language
sleeps as big spoon.
NSFW
he is sub leaning switch.
he might act all confident and stuff but in this original self he is a obident shy baby boy.
praise kink. to the point he can cry after being praised.
arcs his back while whimpering.
soft moaner.
sensitive ear-area and shoulders.

thinking about some parallels between baahubali & jawan, specifically regarding mahendra and azad.
both characters lost a parent: amarendra baahubali was killed the same day mahendra was born and aishwarya was hanged right after azad turned five.
mothers imprisoned after their husband was killed: devasena was held captive by bhallaladeva after amarendra was killed. aishwarya was sent to prison after vikram was presumed dead. also, devasena & aishwarya were badass women who fought and stood up for themselves.
raised by a foster mother: mahendra (shivudu) was raised by sanga while kaveri amma took in azad after aishwarya's death.
both characters met their surviving parent when they were adults: mahendra was finally reunited with devasena when he was about 25. azad was in his 30s when vikram came back into his life. both parents were significantly old at this point.
honoring the legacy of the deceased parent: mahendra vowed to avenge his father and take back the throne of mahishmati, plus make bhallaladeva pay for keeping devasena captive as a prisoner. azad kept aishwarya's promise to prove his father's innocence and provide justice to the oppressed.
lead actors playing both father and son: prabhas as amarendra & mahendra baahubali and srk as vikram & azad rathore.

I've seen a post on instagram about associating enha w indian movie characters and they said heeseung is would be SRK from Om Shanti Om and i cannot get it outta my head. That one scene where her saree gets stuck in his bracelet, all the talking to her poster and him being born as an actor in his next life AND him in deewangi deewangi w all of enha im actually gonna throw up bye 😭😫😭😫
AND can we just. Jake is kabir from yjhd change my mind. The flirting w lara, him being such a carefree party boy w a passion (im talking illahi), him just changing naina's whole life trajectory. 'Mujhe twins bhi banane aate hai' 😀😀
Jungwon as kabir from dil dhadakne do THROW ME OUT OF THE WINDOW literally so pure 😭 the carefree son of a rich kid w family problems and a queen of a sister. He just wants to fly planes 😭😭😭 his unhinged humor and the chaos lmaooo
i actually gasped and clutched my phone harder.
HEESEUNG IS SO SRK FROM OSO. the soft love struck wanna be actor that’s completely enamoured by her. he would be so excited during deewangi deewangi because friends!! and dance!! and singing!! i’m going to be sick. he’s so early 2000’s srk. ALSO??? HEE DURING DARD E DISCO?? shoot me
JAKE AS KABIR ENOUGH. BAAS. i actually laughed out of disbelief because this is PERFECT. he’s such a natural flirt with endearing aura. everyone wants him. ILLAHI AKSNSKNSNSNS 🗣️🗣️ i cant. i’m imagining the kabira encore part with him and his shiny eyes in black and oh, man.
JUNGWON AS KABIR FROM DDD OH MY GOSH. HE GIVES RANVEER KAPOOR VIBES. jungwon saying “auntie vo butter knife hai” would actually solve all my issues
you know what else would EAT? jake as rohan and sunghoon as abhimanyu from student of the year. LIKE, POPULAR BUILT JAKE WITH DADDY ISSUES AND POOR BUILT SUNGHOON WITH STRIVE AND PASSION AND THEYRE ENEMIES AND THEN BEST FRIENDS AND THEN ENEMIES. oh my god i need a sequence of jake and sunghoon and the song vele.

Jawan again. Spoilers included.
I know I know. Got sick and all this useless scrolling through the tl is just adding more thoughts. Why do I have so much thought regarding a movie. I hate my brain sometimes.
So I think it's safe to say this movie won't win awards. Maybe for VFX or stuff like that. Again random acts keep winning stuff these days in India so who knows.
But I wanna talk about srk specifically. He was the main actor here even with plenty of characters having their own arc but you saw srk the actor shine through.
Now I'm no expert but his Vikram Rathore before memory loss, after memory loss and again regaining memory was absolutely perfect.
Because you see in first phase, he's this confident and brave man who loves his wife and has a band of soldiers that would die for each other. Come in second phase, right in the beginning, forget about medical accuracies, he has no memory but goes feral over the goons. And drops his weapons in confusion right after and asks who is he? I was sold right here actually. And we don't see him until the interval. He comes in with a goal, to save his son, a son he has no memory about but is he a man who avoids responsibility. No sir. He comes and straight up tells his son, that I don't really have feelings for you because you see convenient memory loss. But you don't hate him, neither does Azad.
Also he has acquired a different swag while in the village all these years. And you can't tell me that he's not high most of the time. Because he's sorta dazed always, and my theory is that he might have not recovered entirely, maybe there's just dreams or phantom pain that's way too painful for him and thus the constant cigar. Adds another swag entirely though.
So when he recovers his memory, you see the actor in his finest, the eyes, they do everything. Split seconds, and he remembers bit by bit. Imagine getting back memories of about 3-4 decades and it's tragic at best. The final nail, Aishwarya calling him, and he loses it. All that pain comes out in a raging howl. Oh boy. There, the movie actually ended there for me.
It's amazing how a secondary character played by the same actor can overshadow the main lead. I love looking at actors playing double roles honestly. It's fun trying to see when they'll break.

Jawan (2023) Spoiler Review
I urge anyone and everyone to watch it because it is so much fun from beginning to end. Also, SRK is just ugggghhh so damn hot.
Spoilers from here on out.
Alright, let me get this out of the way first: the movie was very massy and I loved it. That said, I wasn't completely blown away by the story and delivery because I'm up to my eyeballs in south Indian mass movies.
Now, there are people who look down on very massy action films. They think it's inferior or not nuanced enough. Some like only certain mass films and think that the ones they like are the superior kind of mass movies. If you're that kind of person, we're gonna have problems.
One, Jawan isn't a mindblowing film BUT it is undeniably a fun film with lots of exciting action, a good and tight storyline, and good songs.
SRK is SRK. There's a reason fans call him King Khan. His charisma is off the charts. He is great as Azad and absolutely breathtaking and unforgettable as Vikram Rathore. I am serious about the unforgettable part. I fear that his next characters, especially if they're older guys, will be compared to the legend Vikram Rathore. I almost wish Atlee would make a sequel because I want to see Vikram again, in his silver fox era, going on missions with his team (and his son somewhere there).
I wasn't really surprised with the DILF in this movie because I do think Atlee has some daddy issues. If you've seen his older movies like Mersal and Bigil, you might have noticed that the dad characters are given banger bgms and better entry scenes (Vetrimaaran and Rayappan, respectively). Vijay's title card in Mersal was Vetrimaaran's theme, while the title card in Bigil has Rayappan's theme/BGM. But Atlee killed them off in those two movies, so he subverted his own tropes in Jawan (THANK GOD BECAUSE WE WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN VIKRAM RATHORE OTHERWISE - sorry, I will not shut up about Vikram okay).
The Girls. Who doesn't love the women of Jawan? Seriously. They absolutely made me giddy with excitement. One, because they were awesome, and we so their backstories and how loyal they were to Azad, and how Azad loved them and was loyal to them, too. Also, that time they called him because he was in the biggest fight of his life (WEDDING NIGHT)! That was honestly the cutest shit ever. If you saw Bigil, Atlee was gunning for that, too, but Bigil is more tamed seeing as it is a sports movie.
Nayanthara and Deepika as they love interests are really good. I was so sad when I learned Aishwarya's fate (shoutout to Atlee who *also* named the mom here Aishwarya -- they're both strong, amazing women). Nayanthara is so damn good and so damn cool (but I am biased towards Jayam Ravi/Nayanthara pairing lmao).
That Sanjay Dutt cameo! Oh, man, I laughed and clapped! I had such a ball of a time. And the revelation that they were friends and he had been helping him all along! Aaaaaah, so satisfying to see honestly. Atlee, why don't you make this a series? I wanna see more of all of them.
Now, on to some things that didn't feel so satisfying to me:
I have seen Vijay Sethupathi play the villain role several times. His performance as Bhavani in Master and Vedha in Vikram Vedha (2017) are tough to beat. It's also really difficult not to compare his performance in Jawan to his performance in those two films because I had such high expectations (yes, I know, my fault a little bit). I feel like his charisma that he usually brings to the table was only seen in small parts, bits and pieces. So, that felt a little bit underwhelming.
Okay, so I like the songs! Anirudh has shown how versatile he is in producing different song genres (but currently movies and fans expect hero-elevation music from him, and that is completely understandable). But I couldn't pinpoint Vikram or Azad's main theme or main bgm. I'm recalling all the Bollywood movies I've watched over the years, and perhaps this isn't a thing in Bollywood films? (Again, if you think having specific bgm for the hero's entry or badass moment is corny, this review isn't for you, sorry, I'm into that shit, I grew up on anime). I know there's a bgm for Azad's entry at the jail and there's literally a song called Vikram Rathore but they just didn't stand out much. You can, of course, argue that SRK doesn't need bgms to elevate him to god-like status. That's true. This is just a me thing, as someone who looks forward to such bgms in mass movies from the south.
OK, I didn't think my review would be this long. I just had many thoughts while watching Jawan. Anyway, like I said, this one is a total banger of a movie. SRK is an absolute joy to watch! What an amazing performer and actor!

A fun fact, yk rahul's mom could always sense when he would come home, even when he would want to surprise her and he would ask "how did she know" (srk's entry) and then years later she feels again that rahul has come home and rushes to the door? And it was when Rahul and Rohan hug during the end of bole chudiyaan (the dance one where they are wearing lehengas and kurtas)!! I loved how them hugging gave her a feeling that her son was returning home (which was kind of right as rohan moved a step closer to his wish of uniting his brother and father: gaining his brother's love and trust without him recognizing rohan)
She must have been disappointed to open the door and not find rahul there but little did she know that her younger son was trying his best to bring back rahul to her 🥹
Oh I noticed that 🥹 That was such a good detail I love media with those strong family bonds so much
Also! I noticed when you were live-blogging the movie a little while back, you were talking about the mall scene super excitedly so you made me excited for it and you were SO RIGHT WHAT A GOOD SCENE AAAA

has anyone thought about the diegesis of music in bollywood/south asian masala movies? there's no doubt that it functions differently than in western musicals... but HOW exactly? in most western musical theatre the music seems to non-diegetic (as in, the characters and those around them are unaware that they are singing) unless it is a performance, then it is diegetic/source music (they are singing in the story- everyone knows they're singing).
perhaps the difference comes from the fact that masala movies are movies first and (to my knowledge) are often not adapted from musical stage productions (though the movies CAN be adapted into musicals in the case of mughal-e-azam, hum aapke hain koun, and dilwale dulhania le jayenge). but in masala movies the line between "this is a performance in the story" and "i am singing to express my feelings" seems somewhat blurred. Señorita from ZNMD is a performance, they are singing, everyone knows it. Bum Bum Bole from Taare Zameen Par, they're singing, Aamir Khan is a funny little dude singing a funky clown song. But then what about Kashmiri Main Tu Kanyakumari from Chennai Express? Singing in a car... okay, that's a performance! But the choreographed dance number? Is that happening or is it symbolizing their journey across India? Mere Khwabon Mein from DDLJ is definitely (probably?) Simran expressing her dreams and such, and she's not singing in universe. But then what about Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna? Raj singing at Simran would make sense as a performance at a mehndi, but what about Simran singing back?
OH and since the popularity of film/musical songs works differently in South Asia than it does in the States... how does continuity work in that? Such as the medley from Mujhse Dosti Karoge, in which Hrithik's character sings Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Rani's character... does this mean that KKHH exists in this universe?? Does Rani Mukherjee the actress then exist in this universe and her character in this movie have a doppleganger?? What about all of Shahrukh Khan's movies... especially with the antakshari scenes in Chennai Express? Does Om Shanti Om exist in that universe? Does SRK the actor exist? If not then how did these songs come about? Is it similar to the NSU (Nickelodeon Sitcom Universe) in which there are gray parts of one's mind when it comes to crossover events? This FASCINATES me to no end you don't understand.
side note. i want to see someone that has directed a masala movie tackle one of these american musical to movie adaptations. no more tom hooper. i want farah khan or karan johar or ss rajamouli to direct cats and see how THAT looks. if tom hooper had directed k3g it would not have been as fantastical (such as the "my son is here" super sense) as it was.
let american movie musicals have as much fun as south asian masala films do.
there seem to be some (paywalled) academic papers on the matter but it'd be interesting to hear anyone's thoughts on it!
