What I say: “I want to read a good Star Trek Into Darkness fic”
What I mean: “I want Spock to *violently* break down over Jim and then have to come to terms with what that means for their relationship.”

For the Reverse Unpopular Opinion meme: would love to give you the excuse to talk about voyager. (or if that's too easy, something you like about your least favorite star trek series??)
i love voyager. so so much. i tried to think if i love another star trek series i've seen any less than voyager, but i can't honestly say that i do? i love ds9, tos, discovery, and, yes, even snw. i am in the embarrassing position of admitting that i really just love star trek, in a mostly uncomplicated way.
of the things i love about voyager, the premise is probably the biggest one. i have rambled about this a lot already but: i think it confronts for the first time in star trek the inherent sadness associated with us studying the stars--and therefore the sadness that science-fiction writers mostly imagine their way out of, often as a way to speculate a time when this reality may be less real: the fact that space is big. it is too big. the fastest human beings have ever traveled, with their own bodies along for the ride, still isn't fast enough to get us to the moon in less than three days. light--the speed limit of the universe--needs a full eight minutes to get from the sun to us--a relatively close planet. space is enormous. we measure things that are "close" in light-years. everything is so spread out and that's just from the perspective of being inside a galaxy, which is actually crowded when compared to intergalactic space. everything is so far away and so long away and it feels impossible to think of getting anywhere in a time meaningful to us and our lifespans. which is in its own way heartbreaking.
and while in voyager they are clearly not alone in the way we feel we could be (and in practice are until we get the smallest sign that even non-intelligent life exists off our very own special rock) with all the aliens they meet and the fact that they are on a ship that can go faster than light, they are stranded and they are on their way back home and it will still take them a life-time. that's the reality of the story: that they will spend the rest of their lives trying to get back. and though i know they do get back much quicker than that, where i'm at in the beginning of season 3 that is still the reality of it. and this makes literally everything that happens in the show so fascinating--even if it's a plot or an idea that not only happened in another series but was done technically better in that series. every plot in voyager is colored by the tension between what the star trek ethos is as a whole--exploration and diversity and learning and humanity--all in an optimistic light--and what voyager is about--getting back home. it makes me think of the tension in the actual "voyagers," somewhere now in interstellar space, and the golden record with a map of earth's position etched onto it: spacecraft meant to never be returned but contained on them is a deep, deep hope that in some way they will be. this tension, to me, affects everything on the show.
but that's maybe too big an idea without specific examples from the series--i might ramble about that at another point lol
in the spirit of your question, i will say there is one star trek property that i don't particularly care for on the whole and that's the 2009 movie (and sequels). but i will also say what that movie did right and what i do love about it even if i don't love the movie as a whole is how it portrayed the high-tech poetics of star trek in a much more immediately understandable way than even the 90s shows could for a 21st century audience. the "apple-store" aesthetic is really an argument about how this is the future and it's sleek and stylish and humans have advanced in their engineering and scientific abilities. and among this high-tech argument is uhura front and center: she's very loudly and explicitly a linguist and she fits in this silicon-valley look despite the fact that nowadays things like linguistics are considered "soft sciences" in a general way and treated like that very specifically by the tech-industry now (the attitude being "there's an app for that"). but uhura makes a central discovery in one of her labs at the beginning of the movie which gives her and kirk a leg up on understanding the Movie Threat. the 2009 movie significantly raised her importance as a character, to the point that the "main trio" in those movies is, arguably, more kirk/spock/uhura than it is kirk/spock/mccoy---especially if you're going by the movie posters.
also they gave her this line:
UHURA: And did I not, on multiple occasions, demonstrate an exceptional aural sensitivity, and I quote, "an unparalleled ability to identify sonic anomalies in subspace transmissions tests?"
which is excellent world-building about communications-officers, if you care for that sort of thing. and it provides a starting point for an argument about how listening to a universe (famed quiet due to the lack of material through which sound can travel) is essential to understanding it---an idea that can be further extrapolated via sci-fi regarding things like: listening to gravitational waves if we record them right; or working on the idea that all matter is but a vibration in a quantum field; or, from a more cultural concern, the implication that it is absurd to think you can travel to an alien world and not bring someone with an "exceptional aural sensitivity" who can facilitate an exchange of language and, thereby, meaning.

Chapter 7: The Meld
https://archiveofourown.org/works/63949117/chapters/167209399
Spock melds with Jim and gets traumatized. Yay!
Excerpt:
Before Spock could continue with this goal though, there was an overwhelming surge of emotion. So overwhelming that it manifested as physical pain in his chest and his head. No, Jim’s chest and Jim’s head.
Reflexively, Spock attempted to end the meld. Only for Jim’s mind to cling to him, to desperately grasp at and wrap around him as best it could.
Stay, it begged. Please, please, just stay.
ALSO, this chapter comes with fanart by the lovely @blanc-ci!

“Are you sure you want to do this?” asked Jim, “If you do this I can’t grantee you’ll be back here.”
You took a deep breath and nodded. You were sitting opposite the Captain, hands folded in your lap, and you tapped your foot nervously. You had thought long and hard about this decision but you knew it was for the best.
“Last chance to change your mind?”
“It sounds like you don’t want me to leave.” You said with a small smile
“No Captain wants to lose a member of their crew.”
“I’ve hardly been here that long,” you said, “and I’ve mostly just stayed in the med bay with Bones.”
Jim gave you a knowing look and smirked which you chose to ignore. You felt your cheeks get hot and you instinctively traced over where your engagement ring used to be. Another nervous tick that you were slowly loosing.
“How are… things?”
It was strange to see Jim looking so uncomfortable.
“It was for the best,” you said with a sad smile, “it wasn’t working out and I think we both knew that. It’s going to take some getting used to being on my own again.”
“Which is why you need the company of your friends.”
“And my family is back on earth.” You said
“Are you sure you want this?”
You took a deep breath and nodded.
“It’s for the best.”
*
“I’m leaving.”
Bones paused for a moment not quite sure he heard you correctly?
“Bones?” you said as you sat down opposite him, “are you ok?”
“You’re leaving?”
“Yes.”
“Why? I thought you liked it here.”
“I do,” you ran a hand over your face, but I’ve decided to go back to the Academy.”
Bones put down his pen, slightly harsher than he intended. You winced at the noise and he slumped in his seat, the realisation of what you said finally hitting him.
“Sorry,” he said quietly, “I didn’t mean… I wasn’t expecting you to go.”
“To be honest neither was I.”
You bit your lip before continuing,
“But after what happened I realised that this really isn’t for me.”
“Working for me?”
“What? No!” you said suddenly, “working in medicine, I mean. It’s what my mother wanted me to do and now…”
You trailed off as you tried to find the right words.
“You’re you again,” said Bones, “a new start. Yeah, I felt like that after my divorce.”
“So you came here?” you said with a teasing smile
“I didn’t have much of a choice.”
“And do you regret it.”
“No.”
Bones’s gaze locked with yours and you smiled. He couldn’t help but return it. Moments like this, he realised, were so fleeting. He took them for granted at the time and now he wasn’t going to experience them again. You’d be leaving him.
“Look,” he said, “y/n. There’s something-“
“I’m not going to stay,” you said, “I’m sorry Bones but my mind is mind up.”
“Right,” the familiar feeling of heartbreak was returning, “right. Of course.”
“I know Bones,” you said, “I know because I-“ you cut yourself off before continuing quietly, “but it’s too soon. I tried to ignore but,” you took a deep breath, “it’s not the right time.”
“I understand,” Bones said, “what are you planning on studying.”
“I’m wanting to go back to engineering.”
“Right.”
An awkward silence settled over the two of you. Not being able to stand it any longer you stood up and walked towards the door. You looked over your shoulder and said,
“This needs to happen Leo. I’ll make sure to keep in touch.”
Keep in touch. Bones pursed his lips knowing what those three words really meant. You’d chat a couple of times and then work would get busy again or you’d be too preoccupied with your studies (as you should be!). Then the calls would get shorter and more awkward and then eventually they just wouldn’t happen.
He didn’t want that to happen.
He didn’t want you to go.
And maybe, from the look on your face, you didn’t want to go either. Still, you gave him one last smile before disappearing from his life, seemingly as easy as you came into it. He looked up when he heard someone come into his office again. To his surprise it was Christine.
“She does care.” She said
“Does she?”
“She does. And she will keep in contact.”
“You seem certain.”
“Now that Peter is out of her life I am. Maybe, sometime in the future she can find someone better.”

A Temporary Reprieve
i.
They found Bones at his desk
pouring over test results and medical tomes.
They knew without looking
the text on the PADD was too small—
it was in the squint in his eyes
and the way he absently rubbed at his temples.
His skin was pale as milk
almost transparent
except for dark smudges below his eyes.
Jim shook his head in exaggerated sadness
even as Bones rolled his tired eyes at the drama.
He never learns.
Indeed.
Bones looked to Jim
then Spock
the set of his jaw stubborn.
You two know I can hear you
don’t you?
Spock’s eyebrow raised.
You can be part of this
conversation
when you start taking better care of yourself
Leonard.
Oh for— Bones started
but his mouth snapped shut
when two pairs of strong hands
grasped his arms
guided him from his office
away from sickbay and a pile of problems.
He gave in.
I guess I could use a break.
ii.
Spock made tea
as Jim got Bones out of his uniform.
The robe whispered against his skin
soft
comforting
as Jim tied it closed
and nudged him
until his legs bumped the edge of the bed
and he sat.
Sighed.
He sipped tea
felt the weight of the world
slip
from his shoulders.
It would come back
but for now
he could let Spock and Jim hold it for him.

Watched 'Into Darkness' again last night.
It's funny how *certain parts* of the fandom will label Uhura a Mary Sue...when you have Kirk Doing Lots Of Things. As a Starfleet officer and member of the bridge crew (not to mention the Chief Communications Officer), Uhura is just doing her job.
Those portions of fandom must really Not Like Her.
Or they're just misogynoiristic twats.
