Support Earthspark

now, guys, just because we analyse a show we love with critical thinking, doesn't mean we shouldn't show it the love it deserves. and i don't mean that in a bad way, this is simply a post to boost ways for supporting Earthspark, because god knows it needs that right now

promoting it on social media is a good way to start, not only on tumblr (the fanbase here has been very positive and i love you guys a lot), but also on twitter (or whatever you call it these days), where most people can know about it. it's very important for writers to know that we appreciate their work on this show, we accept it with all its flaws, and want it to grow

buying toys helps, even if it doesn't feel like it. especially if you live in the US!

Paramount+, as much as i hate to admit it, does depend on views and watches. either get it for free, or buy a one-time subscription, it helps with ratings. watching it live on Nickelodeon can help too, if you have cable

last thing i want to mention (feel free to add your own methods in reblogs) is to look forward to Earthspark Expedition, which comes out on October 13th, on most platforms you can think of (gameplay and trailer). i know it's not the best game in the world, but it looks like simple mindless fun. even if you don't want to play it, consider buying it, depending on the price

don't let Earthspark become the next StarTrek: Prodigy. or Inside Job. or Rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles, god forbid

Last Song You Listened To: Jacaré by Sofi Tukker. I’ve been listening to this track and Jain’s Makeba a lot. Other than that, I’ve been listening to a lot of songs with scifi vibes, which isn’t super helpful for working on my canon-era MDZS fic for the Reverse Big Bang.

Currently Watching: Star Trek: The Original Series. I watched the AOS movies recently and fell down the Spirk rabbit hole. I’m loving the ethical and existential questions that the original series poses. They really tell such compelling stories with duct tape and tissue paper shirts.

Currently Reading: Mostly Star Trek fanfics, but I started Tillie Walden’s graphic novel On a Sunbeam at the recommendation of a friend. And I’m planning to read volumes 2-4 of Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon later this week. I’ve been reading a lot of manga this year, but I did recently read David Levithan’s new middle grade title Answers in the Pages in one sitting, so I recommend it if you’re into intertwined stories and hate censorship.

Current Obsession: Spirk. The original space gays have me in their grip. I made a new sideblog @startrek-sos. I don’t think I’m escaping this one. I’ve already ordered a Starfleet enamel pin for myself and done some limited palette art on @raine-hearts-art.

it's star trek update time. last night we watched ds9's "profit and loss" and tng's "genesis."

profit and loss (ds9):

i was EATING! what an amazing episode. even though there was lots of quark and he's not normally my favorite

entire section with quark on his knees begging or whatever. that post thats like "gay people never flirt normally it's always shit like this"

my favorite part was that, in spite of all quark's begging and bribery, odo was like "yeah no i was gonna disobey orders anyway bc justice. this was fun though thanks" like my absolute KING and best friend odo startrek.

also, odo's complete and total disdain for the idea of romance........please. he's SOMEWHERE on the ace and/or aro spectrum. idk where but he is

AND GARAK! i'm sad he only had one conversation with bashir but i was so excited to see him and find out even a little bit more about him. i was like aw cm,on hes harmless hes just a little guy hes a gay little tailor and then they strongly implied he used to be an assassin and i had to pause the episode bc i got lightheaded

at first i didnt understand the end...like he informed on them and was gonna kill them to get back to cardassia and then just RANDOMLY changed his mind? but he told you what he was gonna do in his very first scene. it's loyalty to the state before loyalty to loved ones - or, yes, even the self. his 180 was a little abrupt, but i totally got it once i thought about it. the depth of the love he has for a place that ??? tossed him out ??? i guess? is pretty amazing

my only real complain about this episode was that they fumbled quark a little. that episode where he was in a quasi-romance with that cross-dressing ferengi actually gave us a good set-up - he does have a soul/conscience/whatever and IS capable of caring about other people, even more more than he cares about his assets (like the bar) - in both this episode and that one, he was perfectly willing to throw away the bar for a love interest. but in that other episode, he wasn't willing to live and be with that other ferengi unless she conformed to HIS idea of how women should be. in this one, he was briefly entertaining the idea of throwing away his entire life to go fight this lady's cause with her (which i don't think he could have followed through with), but absolutely nobody brought up "if you love her you have to give her agency and let her do what she wants ie leave" or at the VERY least "it's creepy/selfish to try and blackmail her into more or less marrying you." like, no, you don't need to spoonfeed the audience, WE know it's creepy, but her students going "yeah no let her stay!" was bonkers. and then when he did let her leave (and decided not to go with her even though he'd offered to do that earlier) it was just because he...had no choice?

idk, i feel like "quark sold food to starving bajorans even though it was illegal" does a LOT to humanize him, and in a GREAT way because plausibly he could go "yeah well the bajorans had money and i like money" to deny he has a conscience or whatever. AND IT WAS A THROWAWAY LINE. meanwhile he spent half this episode being creepy to this poor cardassian lady and it kind of undoes all that...? i'm not saying i DON'T want quark to be selfish and secretly a goody two-shoes, but i do want him to care about SOMETHING in a way that's like, if not totally unselfish, at least in a manner that has depth. "i like this lady so i want her to stay here forever and forget logic and also whatever she wants" is pretty much the least complex kind of romance you could give him. it works as a STARTING point, but if the endpoint is him just letting her leave because he quite literally has no choice, there wasn't much of a point to any of it plotwise, even if his non-sexist antics were extremely fun to watch in this episode

if spot transformed into an iguana right as she was finished giving birth to her kittens and they were a day old when data and picard found them, that means those newborn kittens did not eat for a full 24 hours and picard and data left them in data's quarters without feeding them or caring for them at all, which is perhaps the gravest sin either of them has ever committed

newborn kittens can only last a few hours without nursing - after half a day, they'd all be gone. and SOMEHOW they're still alive even though NO ONE HAS FED THEM and they don't even stop to feed them like we SAW them leave you can't even pretend they just did it offscreen between scenes. like are you kidding

ALSO, spot and all the other cats aboard this fucking spaceship should be fixed??? i hate to accuse my best friend data of being an irresponsible pet parent but there it is :/

i would never take my cats into space. they don't even like car rides. how can you drive this ship into a planet when there are children AND CATS aboard?? i hate tng so deeply

anyway, doing all of that to worf was racist and worf biting deanna in the bath was rapey. no wonder the actors hated worf e deanna almost every single one of their scenes together has been awful. -1000000/10 this might be my least favorite episode of tng i've ever watched

Hi! It looks like I'm week 3!

I honestly have no idea idea what im doing really but i guess you'll just have to listen to me ramble about something i enjoy. Seems to fit the theme we've accidentally settled on and well! if theres one thing im good at rambling about its bl fanfiction. i read ALOT of fanfiction. like 13million words worth of it in 2023 alone (an estimate but i did the ugly math for jan and feb last year and id already read 2.7 million words so i dont think its too high an estimate).

ive read fics from too many fandoms to count and also have way more hyperfixations then any one person has a right too but the one that has owned my ass consistently for the last 4 years is The Untamed otherwise know as Mo Dao Zu Shi (MDZS).

The lovely Eucalyptus from week 2 was watching the untamed during covid (and holy shit what a wild ride that was) and the next thing I know im neck deep drowning in fan art and tiktok edits of beautiful chinese men that have no business being as talented as they are (Im looking at u Wang Yibo) This. shit. fucked. up. my. life.

then i turned to my good friend AO3 (love of my life i could not exist without you) and 4 years later ive read my tags dry. if its complete, ive read it. im getting desperate and ive started reading works in progress, yikes. its so risky i honestly cannot tell you how much anxiety it gives me. ive been burnt too many times.

The best Zombie Apocalypse au on the MDZS tag honestly. There are so many good zombie film references in this one, i see you Train to Busan. Baby junior quartet, a perfect Wei Wuxian modern day depiction and so much love, angst and stress. It's delicious and I've never recovered.

star trek: Lower Decks

i've never watched star trek in my life. cultural osmosis is the only things i know of it. lets hope this is a good place to start. it's animated which speaks to me more then live action stuff generally, lets see how this goes.

first episode, bit oh so whacky which i hope doesn't stick around too strong.

love the person with the attitude of "moving up in rank? you mean more stress? no thanks, i'm good."

i think the first episode did a pretty good job introducing people and the general structure/spoof of it all. also love the main not green lady, because obviously.

ah, i liked her wearing her uniform a bit open, really fit the character.

no buffer time... yea so that's how every project runs past it's due date and why stuff breaks.

creative estimating. or more accurately: leadership doesn't know that a task is not just the physical task but also the headspace around it.

it's the 80s, we don't have psychiatric problem! how to make a it look like a movie? lens flares everywhere! ah, the slow motion picture. quickly getting rid of fabric as i'm sure they're a bitch to animate, especially when the person is in a fight scene (: yea, she might need therapy. oh, that was a secret... not anymore (:

oh shit, suddenly takes set up in seconds. really neat finally, tying a lot of neat things together while also setting up future stuff. i really hope they can truly build on it in season 2. also a lot of stuff that's even cooler if you've watched any startrek before.

TW: Vent; Father issues

He's an alcoholic and addicted to drugs and p*rn, and he's driven drunk several times, gotten several DUIs, and has been to jail several times because of it.

Me and my father have a love hate relationship. I haven't talked to him in two years, and I simultaneously never want to speak to him again, and I want to yell at him for how he's acted my whole life.

He ended up marrying someone (whom I refuse to call my step mother), roughly a year ago I believe. I only met her for three hours, in which she asked several questions about my school and personal life that I did not feel comfortable sharing.

Ever since then, he's been getting worse and worse, more recently stalking us, digging in our garbage, and possibly (meaning almost definitely) breaking into the house to steal things that belong to me. We put up cameras, and we're gonna build and put birdhouses on them to hide them. We're also planning on leaving and going to a hotel for a few days to see if we can catch him and his wife on camera.

It honestly hurts a lot.

When I was little, he was my whole world. I wasn't old enough to know what a dad was supposed to be like, nor did I second guess things. I'd have to fight for any kind of bonding time with him. I'd have to sit down next to him and watch whatever he was watching (It would typically be StarTrek, Stargate, or Mcgyver), or beg him to do what I wanted to do.

I didn't know it wasn't normal to do that. I didn't know Dad's were supposed to be actively trying to bond with their kids. I wasn't old enough to know what happened behind the scenes or who he was.

When my parents divorced when I was 9, I held high hopes. I hoped he would get better. I hoped things would be ok. I held onto false promises.

It got worse and worse as I got older. Broken promises built up over time. When I hit 15 (last year), All of the wife stuff started happening, and now its reaching into now. I was upset and angry, but I still helt a little hope that he would get better.

With the news of the probable breaking and entering, and the fact he'd gotten WAY worse, I lost all hope. I know he'll never change. I know he'll never be the dad I wanted (and needed). Even if he one day apologizes for everything, and changes, it still won't fix the fact that he took having a proper dad away from me.

I want it so badly. I want a dad so badly. But I can't have it. I can't have a real relationship with him. I'm growing up and I never got that. I missed out. I'm constantly bouncing between angry, heartbroken, annoyed, tired, and upset and I have no freaking clue what I'm feeling at a certain time.

I want to never speak to him again, but I also want to tell him what I'm feeling so desperately.

I never want to be around him anymore because I'm angry, but I also want a dad so frickin badly.

But I know that little me will never get the Dad she wanted. And it hurts. It hurts so badly.

It would be easier if I truly hated my father but I don't. I simultaneously hate him for his actions and love him because I want him to be a dad. And it hurts.

It hurts to know the dad you've known your whole life was never a real dad to begin with. It hurts to know that you'll never get that, no matter how much you beg them to change, no matter how much you hope.

It hurts to know that your own father is breaking into your house to steal anything they can get their hands on to win a court battle in the future, resulting in my items getting effected.

It hurts to have to cut someone you simultaneously hate and love off.

It hurts for people to say "You're taking the easy way out" by cutting him off finally. You really think this is easy?! It's not. It's actually harder.

I'm in pain, and I don't know if I'll ever truly heal from it completely, because it's left this gaping hole in my chest that I can't fill.

I'm exhausted, I'm tired, I'm hurting, and I don't know how to fix it.

Of course, I try to use characters and jokes to cope, but it doesn't always work. Sometimes I can talk about it all with no issue and joke about it. Other times, I say two words and I break down sobbing.

has never slept through a movie in his life; has a pretty long attention span for things he’s interested in. sadly, there are really only a handful of things like that. so everything else bores him to death

loved inception but didn’t completely understand it, still thinks it’s pretty cool though

pays for every single streaming platform available and uses vpn to get shows from other countries too

loves movies, but when y’all are chilling, she’ll prefer to watch a few episodes of a show together with you. for example, it took you both three months just to get through season one of riverdale because she refused to watch it without you

not much of a snacker other than popcorn or something

has a million pillows and blankets, and yet still chooses to huddle close to you while netflix and chilling. she’ll either keep an arm around your waist or shoulder, it doesn’t matter as long as she’s in contact with you in some way

never misses anything. like she could literally retell an entire episode of stranger things without missing a single detail

nobara would be really good at reviewing shows and movies too, but she won’t watch anything on netflix that she doesn’t already have a 90% or higher match with and she’s stubborn about it too, which is why you’d probably have to beg and plead for her to watch an anime she’s not already into.

doesn’t have any streaming subscriptions at all so you’ll have to use your own for netflix and chill

not much of a tv watcher either, but he’ll be very receptive if it’s a film or show based on a book he’s read. however, be prepared, he will also be quite critical of it too

documentaries are also good, but fushiguro’s only interested in the ones about animals. he legit watched blackfish twice, and several episodes of our planet

might’ve been into startrek if he had a netflix for himself. you’ve given him your login to use but he always forgets the password

fushiguro really only does the netflix and chill thing to spend time with you, that’s honestly it. he likes it when you sit between his legs and lean back on him, that way his arms are always around you, squeezing and holding you

will fall asleep in the middle of a movie with no hesitation. he doesn’t even try to fight it. when he wakes up, he’ll ask you to fill him in because “that’s good enough for me”

has a netflix and hulu, and somehow uses both a whole lot, but honestly only found out that yuji was using it too when he went to watch kakegurui and it was already completed.

loves to netflix and chill with you, emphasis on the chill; it’s one of his favorite ways to relax when you two manage to have the same day off

two words: wandering hands. 

they start off on your thigh and then before you know it, you’re not even paying attention to the movie since you’re too busy sucking face with him like a pair of horny teens

his netflix algorithm must be nuts, because he will watch any and everything, so you always get to choose what y’all get into. 9 times out of 10, he’s probably seen it already

sometimes he has the decency not to spoil it for you, other times he’ll be a little shit about it to be funny-

netflix and chill with gojo is usually accompanied by some form of takeout. could be pizza, or anything as long as it’s greasy. doordash is his best friend.

𝟏𝟎. 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐏𝐈𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: really this blog is just a mix of my favourite characters in a few select fandoms. in the case of the startrek muses, it’s bc i wanted more content for them and it seems the only way to get that is to write it myself. the marvelmuses are all tony adjacent and desrve more content and more love but i fell in love with them through writing tony. rory has always been one of my fav dw characters but the inspiration to write him 100% came from @faerietaled deciding to write amy. the ocs are characters i’ve had floating around in my head for a while as npcs but to actually create them and start writing them i was inspired a lot by @glacierfront and @feralego ‘s amazing ocs. and leo was the result of an rp i did on my tony blog anyway. mostly any character i write, i write bc they make me feel things and they are interesting to explore further than what canon gave us

You should watch lost in space (2018)

Look I absolutely love this show. I don’t think I’ve been as obsessed with a form of media since way before quarantine even started. Like this has been something that has helped me a lottttt. So I figured Id sit down and give you guys a little bit of my likes and dislikes! As well as show off some of the gorgeous pictures from it!

Some good things!

- Coming from someone whos family is a military family and my parents have split due to the problems that come up, I can without a doubt say that the family dynamic is very realistic.

- Siblings act like siblings! From the bossy older sister who feels like shes always in charge when parents arent around, the middle child who just wants to be appreciated and seen while trying to also be adventurous, to the baby of the family who could “do no wrong”

- Characters have personalities! They have likes, dislikes, each one having their own struggles and character development! 

- The SCENARY!!!! GOD ITS FUCKING BEAUTIFUL 

- Yes its sci-fi, but a lot of the things that happen feel extremely relatable. I know I mentioned this in the family aspect but even outside of the family aspect too. 

- Sarcastic side characters.

- DIVERSITY.

- LEMME SAY IT AGAIN. DIVERSITY

- DIVERSITY WITH IMPORTANT JOBS!

- Interesting Alien concepts

- For me personally I enjoy the realistic sorta science behind it all. Like it feels like this show could potentially be something plausible. It’s probably no where close to genuine science, but like it wraps you up into it and feels as if it is. 

- THE COSTUMES 

-The Chicken

Some things I didn’t particularly enjoy. - The overbearing mom who is always right. Dont get me wrong, she does learn and sort of grow from this after she realizes shes not alone in this entire situation and what not. But it does sorta feel like pulling teeth sometimes just because I’ve lived with the type. - Dr. Smith, dont get me wrong I enjoy some moments of hers because they add flair and what not but she pushes my buttons. But I suppose she pushes my buttons in a good way? Like she keeps the story interesting.  - The title is lost in space, so obviously the main plot is them being lost. but I wish we got more input on like how they survive instead of them just constantly moving on and getting out of trouble.  Personally all the little things that I see wrong, arent horrid things. Theyre things that were worked out in plot and or continuing to grow on. I could continue to pick it apart and try and find more but really I cant.  Anyways! If you enjoy shows like the 100, startrek, or well just a really good scifi show then I suggest Lost in Space (2018)

YES COME WATCH STAR TREK <333 I’d recommend either starting with season 2/3 of tng (unless u wanna watch season 1 which in case be prepared for Sucky season 1 stuff) or just jumping right into ds9 and having fun with it!!

And yes!! I have only 1 human and two half human folks lmao <3 I just find the aliens of trek more interesting and the dynamics between aliens to be fun to play around with. My favorite Star Trek aliens r probably either the vorta or the Vulcans,, gotta love those V names <33 I have two Vulcan ocs, one is named Solar and he’s a trans guy with a love for cactuses, and the other is a half Vulcan with a love for work and not talking about her feelings

- Carrie White/Ash Williams - This is a crackpairing that I think needs more love. It was born purely from my enjoyment of beneficial relationships, when two hurting people find comfort in each other. 

- Sam Emerson/Alan Frog - I wasn’t sure how I felt about this one, at first, but it’s really grown on me. I’m soft for a pair of nerds, who make significantly more ridiculous decisions together than apart, but still make each other happy.

Nia Nal

I was really surprised how affecting it was to see Nicole Maines play Nia Nal / Dreamer on Supergirl. 

They cast a trans woman to play a trans woman. They gave her a trans roommate (technically her roommate never ID’s as trans, but the actress playing the roommate is trans). She is never misgendered. She is never deadnamed. All of the main cast are completely affirming and respectful. She has a love interest who is in awe of her and her transness is in no way a problem for their relationship, while still being a fact that her love interest is aware of. Surrounded by loving friends, she tells the world that she is proud to be trans.

Her female family members expresses support and acceptance while not fully recognizing her womanhood as being as real as their own. It gets to be a thing, but it’s just one episode and the main cast is completely supportive.

When I started watching Sense8 I had to stop because watching Nomi get deadnamed and misgendered was too upsetting. I watched Her Story but the focus on a trans woman in an abusive relationship was really upsetting, and having a trans woman accept her transness being analogized to a gambling addiction - I’m still angry. And let’s not get started with shows like Transparent that cast cis men as trans women. 

I haven’t mentioned Pose or Orange is the New Black, but those shows seem way too serious for me. My top shows are She-Ra and Dark Crystal, Great British Bake Off, and StarTrek. Watching realistic, non-allegorical / non-fantastic depictions of human pain and violence just fucks me up. So seeing a trans character in a lighter show like Supergirl is special for me, because it’s something I can watch.

Most of all I love that she’s a character who didn’t have to be trans; her transness is irrelevant to the larger plot. She’s not trans to teach a lesson or for spectacle. She’s trans because sometimes people are trans. And I love that so much.

There are a lot of issues* with trans representation in Supergirl, but for me this is a milestone and I wanted to celebrate.

*e.g. both trans characters are binary & cis-passing trans folks (and seemingly straight) & Nia’s housemate is relegated to the racist “Sassy Black Friend” trope with few scenes.

i don’t know if anyone at all will remember this but i actually had a miwooseok muse waaay back in 2017 in the earlier run of mi, back when it was murder inc. this is NOT the same muse, but i’m really excited to be picking up a familiar fc again!!!

anyways, i really need to get this boy involved so i won’t take up too much of your time with stuff about me. you can find me in ims, but i’m more reliable on twitter or discord, both of which are available upon request in tumblr ims!

now onto wooseok.

if you click on the name above the cut that’s his profile!! i don’t have a full history page up, but mostly bc i accidentally covered p much all of it in his trivia, but i’ll paraphrase and give the basics here too!

legally, he doesn’t exist. long story short, he comes from a long line of professional assassins and spies and lowkey they’re a cult now (but substitute god with ancestor worship). he’s the product of what was in essence selective breeding and raised to be the best of them yet, so someday he’d continue on the legacy.

his mother was a normal person, a gymnast, but the kim family arranged for a career-ruining injury and forced her to marry their bachelor. shortly after, she gave birth to wooseok in a hospital. the kims don’t like having a paper trail, so they faked the baby’s death and raised him under the radar. this also keeps cps off their backs in case anyone complains about the state of the child! being raised to kill incurs a lot of bruises, not their fault!

wooseok probably would’ve become a monster if his mother wasn’t the bravest woman alive. she wanted her son to be human, so when her husband was away on jobs instead of continuing wooseok’s training, she’d smuggle him over to her mother’s house. he got to watch tv, eat sweets, play with toys that were not lethal weapons, and be doted on by his maternal grandparents there. it was these excursions that kept his humanity.

of course those trips didn’t stay secret! when wooseok was 14, his mother suddenly passed. he wouldn’t learn until he was 19 that the kims had actually orchestrated her death, killing her to keep her from continuously damaging their protege’s training. wooseok, outraged at this information (since he really loved his mom), left the family. he still needs their connections so he hasn’t quite cut all ties, but he does not live with or speak to them if at all possible.

thanks to his upbringing though, he’s super paranoid about publicity! he lives as close to off the grid as is possible, leaving as little evidence of his very existence as possible. all of his hitman jobs are taken from a forum on the dark web where he’s known only by his username anon592. he has no bank account and receives payment exclusively through cryptocurrency; he prefers bitcoin. he sells most of these coins face to face in “real life” to interested buyers, cash only.

as for his murder job, he never meets his clients face to face. his prices vary (with more info on this on his trivia page), but all that’s really important is that he takes half the payment up front and the rest after the job is complete.

he currently lives in an apartment where he’s cut a deal with the landlord to pay in cash and a little bit extra if he keeps him off the books, and he’s a neat and quiet tenant so it works out. that said, he still moves frequently. he also has no permanent cell phone at this time, only using burners that he rotates every other week or as necessary.

so basically he’s a hard guy to find.

THAT SAID he’s also strangely friendly and actually really nice considering his upbringing and profession. he’s not very interested in the local gangs outside of just staying out of their way or taking extra precautions if they’re involved in a job, but he’s always down to make new friends regardless of affiliation. he has a soft spot for cats and especially pitiful things and something of a moral compass, but he’s still learning.

his childhood was incredibly sheltered and he hasn’t taken a ton of time to explore what he missed out on yet, so there’s sometimes obvious references or cultural touchstones that he doesn’t get. he’s never seen a marvel movie, he’s only barely heard about harry potter, and he has no idea that starwars and startrek are different franchises. the only thing he’s definitely got down is spongebob, which he definitely binged since striking out on his own.

his sense of humor is a little weird, a little dry, but it’s pretty good overall. believe it or not, he’s actually a pretty easy muse to get along with! so please!! plot with him!! hit me up!!! let’s get this party started!!!

Q: Why the Mad Max Fandom?

A: I was actually quite fixated on Fury Road after watching it on DVD. I didn’t expect to particularly like it - I’d never seen the previous Mad Max movies (I finally have!) - but I was transfixed. And I didn’t particularly ship Furiosa and Max until the haemothorax/transfusion scene (although then I very much did). There were just so many layers of detail and backstory there waiting to be explored, because so little was actually said or explained. It’s like a neutron star of fic-fodder. And I didn’t discover ao3 til summer 2016 so I spent a full year wandering around like a lost soul. So, yeah. Quite a huge deal for me really.

Q: What do you think are some defining aspects of your work? Do you have a style? Recurrent themes?

A: Music. Minor characters looking on and commenting on the protagonists (big fan of Thomas Hardy’s more comedic efforts, where this happens a lot). Reasonably happy endings.

Q: Which of your works was the most fun to create? The most difficult? Which is your most popular? Most successful? Your favourite overall?

A: Maybe the small town modern AU (Ordinary People), because it was a nice change from the Wasteland setting. I’m not very Wasteland-minded at all. But the Bladerunner AU (Do Androids Dream etc) and the new Firefly AU are lots of fun because the two sets of movie worlds mesh together way better than I’d expected. 

The most difficult? - My Wasteland headcanon stuff. It’s too fluffy and not remotely violent which doesn’t really ring true. I’m very aware that my Furiosa is hardly ever violent, or my Max particularly mad. But that’s the great thing about fanfiction - the infinite versions of characters and scenarios. Surprisingly the Blues Brothers AU is quite tricky. I can’t quite make Jake Blues and Furiosa the same person. But it’s an excuse to listen to great tunes. And Jessie will make a comeback in that one though (she’s not dead, I should make that clear). 

On the old kudos-to-hits ratio, the Firefly AU is taking off surprisingly well, but it’s quite smut-focused so that might well account for it ;) early days yet. Bladerunner AU is doing well for a multi-chapter. Up Around The Bend (an oldie, the escape from the Citadel) is hanging in there. 

Most successful? I’m happy enough with all of them, except maybe I Kissed A Girl. Please don’t read that. Favourite overall - It’s a toss-up between Ordinary People (a chance to explore my headcanon in a modern small town setting) and the Bladerunner AU (it makes me weep). 

Q: How do you like your wasteland? Gritty? Hopeful? Campy? Soft? Why?

A: Hopeful and silly and everyone has access to a record player somehow. This is why I stick to writing AUs these days. But I’ll happily read all of the above!!! And entirely intend to!

Q: Walk us through your creative process from idea to finished product. What's your prefered environment for creating? How do you get through rough patches?

A: Watch a film, browse tumblr, listen to music, get an idea. Have a good think about it, think about it some more, find a starting point, write it down, go from there. Maybe stick a draft on tumblr if I’m not sure if it’s going to fly. Write it anyway. 

For OCs, figure out what someone looks like. That’s weirdly essential for me. Zal (Furiosa’s Dad) is Ed Harris, Young Val (Furiosa and Max’s grownup daughter) is Alicia Vikander and Toots (rescued-kid-turned-Wasteland-son-in-law) is Didier Drogba (bit of a blast from the past but hey). I was getting nowhere with Blues Mothers Jessie until I recast her as Sofia Boutella (because if Max is getting a generational update, she needs one too). And Firefly AU’s Mister Jobassa is Jakob Oftebro. All very pretty people, but what are you gonna do? But they’re only these people in MY head - they can be whoever the reader wants them to be. Oh, and Pin from Ordinary People was 100% an actual real tour guide I met on holiday once. 

Preferred environment? Usually while half asleep in bed, or walking, or In the gym, or watching tv - world building seems to be something that happens away from the keyboard. Writing itself is exclusively on my phone so can and does happen anywhere at all. Rough patches are usually caused by guilt that I’m not spending enough time on the day job :P

Q: What (if any) music do you listen to for help getting those creative juices flowing?

A: I listen to music all the time anyway, mainly upbeat pre-90s tunes. Disco, funk, ska, motown, anything like that. And it always find its way into the writing. Sometimes artificially (where I’m on a song-lyrics-as-title theme - it took ages for some of the Wasteland fics) but most times it can help shape the story in a BIG way. I can’t listen to certain songs now without reliving a chapter or a whole fic - Dionne Warwick’s Do You Know The Way To San José is Bladerunner!Furiosa’s Green Place song, and Ash’s Angel Interceptor is StarTrek!Max’s flying music - it’s noisy enough but also speaks to me about a longing to not be alone in the universe. Concrete and Clay is smalltown!Max’s bittersweet lament for Jessie and Twistin’ The Night Away is the final party scene in Cheedo’s update of The Rivals. Some fics wouldn’t have been written at all if it wasn’t for a particular song. The Black Keys’ Heavy Soul was my original Wasteland Furiosa/Max ship theme back in 2015, before I’d even heard of ao3 - that’s the closest I’ve come to a song fic. Caleb was only Caleb because of a line in Symarip’s Skinhead Moonstomp, and I was so desperate to write a fic with Leo Sayer’s You Make Me Feel Like Dancing In it that it was the final excuse for a whole modern mirrorverse to my Wasteland headcanon series. Bet you’re sorry you asked now. But I’ll have to go and put together a Kirkyverse OST list.

Q: What is your biggest challenge as a creator?

A: To put the damn thing down and walk away. To not assume it’s awful if I don’t get a kudos in the first thirty hits. Thumb cramp from phone-typing.

Q: How have you grown as a creator through your participation in the Mad Max Fandom? How has your work changed? Have you learned anything about yourself?

A: I didn’t write at all before the Mad Max fandom. Apart from a ghost story when I was about seven (it did win a prize tbh) and a truly god awful Stephen King rip-off when I was fourteen (which makes me nauseous from embarrassment when I think of it). So a fair bit, it’d probably be fair to say. It would be impossible not to, you know, from zero :) My work has changed from spinoffs of inspirational fics (thanks Squid!) to ‘well, I suppose I’ve got a head canon, let’s see if I can make this work’ to ‘goddammit I’ll finish this if it kills me’. Then I missed my exit on the Roundabout of Fic Endings and had to go round again in a modern AU mirror verse. Now it’s all movie mashups, which is lots of fun and probably never-ending. During which time I have learned that crossovers are my favourite to write. And that writing fanfic is probably not a temporary fad :)

Q: Which character do you relate to the most, and how does that affect your approach to that character? Is someone else your favourite to portray? How has your understanding of these characters grown through portraying them?

A: I don’t really have a favourite tbh. They’re all their own people and do their own thing. Writing them is very dependent on their environment, and it’s often surprising how they behave and where they end up. It feels a bit like they’re on Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Q: Do you ever self-insert, even accidentally?

A: Hah yes. The first one was Zephyr the annoying visitor in Witches and Ogres. Young Val’s social awkwardness in As was very much on loan from me. 

Q: Do you have any favourite relationships to portray? What interests you about them?Furiosa and Max are pretty much always there - sometimes it’s probably platonic, and sometimes there’s a third person involved (nothing posted yet but but but). It depends on the fic.

Q: Do you prefer to create in one defined chronology or do your works stand alone? Why or why not?

A: One big long chronology for the headcanon series (childhood to old age), then a whole bunch of little universes for everything else.

Q: To break or not to break canon? Why?

A: Not to break, as much as I can. But it depends.

Q: Share some headcanons.

A: Furiosa was never actually a wife - she was captured but dodged the whole Vault experience. Max is the original Max, of Jessie and Sprog fame. Toecutter was Joe’s younger self - he scooted around on motorbikes and raised hell before deciding to settle down and take the Citadel. AU Toast and Dag are twins (from a shady mob family). Furiosa’s Dad is a friendly Wasteland bandit. 

Q: If you work with OCs walk us through your process for creating them. Who are some of your favourites?

A: They’re supplementary characters who make the plots fit together, and sources of conflict or humour (usually both). I think I like Ordinary People’s Alexa and Mallory best. Although the Irish War Boy crew in Beyond the Pale were fun to write. Ace’s trio of love interests (Brick, Big Dave and Caleb/Pin) are a consistent theme. Sometimes I steal characters from other sources (stand up Christopher Brookmyre) when it’s convenient.

Q: What sparks your many wonderful AUs?

A: Movies, tv, gifs, tumblr prompts and general chitchat (thankyou btw!!!)

Q: A lot of your fics are light-hearted and hopeful, which is great to see for the apocalyptic Mad Max world. Your thoughts on that? What is it about the characters that inspires you to reframe them?

A: I just really like comedy and am committed to winkling it into every fictional scenario whether it’s appropriate or not. Glad people don’t hate it!

Q: Who are some works by other creators inside and outside of the fandom that have influenced your work?

A: Well, it was Squid’s ( @sacrificethemtothesquid )Length and Breadth of Fury Road that got me out of the starting blocks! Christopher Brookmyre’s The Sacred Art of Stealing was a big influence on my headcanon series, as was a particular Coronation Street storyline from some years back :) 

Q: Tell us about a current WIP or planned project.

A: Blues Brothers AU series (Sweet Home Chicago) -Wasteland Star Trek First Contact AU (Angel Interceptor) -Firefly AU (Our Mister Jobassa) -His Dark Materials AU (unnamed as yet, just brewing in my head, hope it just stays there for the meantime) -Will combine all the headcanon works into one long fic sometime. That’s everything from Witches and Ogres through to Ordinary People. Probably be called ‘All the Things that I’ve Done’ (basically the two lives of Furiosa: Wasteland and mirrorverse).

But if I was going to pick an actual career type job, I’d love to go back to work full time as a special effects makeup artist on something large scale instead of the smaller films and stage work I’ve done previously.
