1. The beginning

Someone probably has said it before but it takes a lot of courage to start something.

I remember my first ballet lesson when I was 14. It was a bit late for me, but I chose not to care about my age as it had always been a dream of mine. And so I appeared at 4.00, Wednesday afternoon, in line with the other kids who were five, six, at most eight years old. It did not discourage me, I was a regular attendee until I left for a boarding school, two years later. I did not know where it would take me when I began. Apart from taking my dream classes, I gain a friend - in my teacher. She used to take me to the theater, to opera, so I could see professional dancers on stage. And although we haven't talked much since we parted ways, I will always remember her warmly.

And by writing this I want to start picking up the scraps of my life, little by little. I don't need you to help me - I just want someone to listen without judgment, to see a human in me, and treat me as one.

All in all, I never became a professional dancer but it was not my goal and that's for another story.

Why am I writing this?

I want to start this blog to tell my story. It is going to be a real story, although sometimes it may sound quite improbable.

It will be a story about laughter and tears, wins and failures. I figured I need a space where I can express myself freely, where I can say what I've got to say without worrying that it's going to be too much. You are free to leave whenever you want to.

I want this to be a journey - both mine and yours.

Maybe, in the end, we are going to learn something from each other, if only how to be more gentle and strong.

Advice for Remy, Day 1. So last year I set myself an Instagram challenge, posting a photo and update every day of the year. As someone who aspires to write for a living (one day, you never know) it gave me a great opportunity to put some words down each day and get some valuable practice in. As a neat by-product, it's also served as a fabulous diary of the year for us, which will be great to look back on in the future (especially for a record of Remy's first 8 months on this planet). So I wanted to carry on this year but with a slightly new direction. Every parent wants to pass on their 'wisdom' (inverted commas fully justified) to their children, so I thought I'd try and come up with a years-worth of advice for Remy to muse over when he's older. He may choose to ignore it, he may disagree, and many other people may too, but I know that if my dad had done the same for me, I'd love having it to read through from time to time. So I guess this is my first piece of advice for Remy. Number one - don't start year-long challenges on social media unless you intend to see them through. Only time will tell whether I heed this advice.

Starting something

I am super stoked that my long time dream is coming into reality on the 25th Feb.

There has been a project in which I decided I needed to take on a few years back. It was really hard to decide to actually do this, as this meant giving up or putting on hold a lot of extremely important parts of my life. It also meant starting again and doing it alone.

As usual, most people (Including some whose opinion mattered a lot to me) told me they were disappointed in me, or that I would better off doing other things. It bummed me out quite a bit, but I guess that is no different to when I told people I wanted to become a professional drummer (that is a story for another time).

I have realised over time, that I battle to express myself in an understandable manner, because I have a bunch of thoughts trying to be shoved through a tiny funnel and then I don't really make any sense. This just meant I needed a different way to express what I want to say. Seeming all I really want to talk about is drumming and the life around it... I felt I needed to start a Drum Vlog/Educational/Creative space for myself and my friends in music. The point of this would then be to expand that to let it become a community for others to do the same in their own way.

Hence, Drum Above Lessons I am going to make this as simple as I can. I am releasing 5 days a week on Youtube/Facebook and IGTV (maybe).

Here is how the posts are going to go. Monday - Drum Vlog Vlogity Vlog Vlog (first one on the 25th) Tuesday - Trinity R&P challenge Wednesday - Drumless tracks/Loops for Drummers Thursday - Rockschool Challenge Friday - Drum concepts

I will explain each day's purpose as we get closer to the time of the release for each one.

This is a warning now though, that this is not going to be the normal type of drum lesson channel (Wait, did that sound normal?? Doesn't every company out there say that??) Scratch that! This will be the most gosh darn freaking normal drumming channel you will ever watch.
